I loved this one just as much as the other books in this series! I laughed out loud at the comedy scenes and can't wait for the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Fun!!.......2007-07-21

I adore Katie Macalister and this series. I'm a native New Yorker, and ride the subway to work every day. Even though the subway is overcrowded and there are usually some less than savory characters, my commute just flies by with Katie's books (the entire Aisling Grey series, as well as her other books, including her vampire series!). I am beyond excited when I find out she's written another book. Serious, deep literary stuff it is not, but if you're looking for a FUN read for travel, before bed, or to even give you some new ideas with your love life, buy her books. I'm so glad I did!!

5 out of 5 stars Silly Fun Series.......2007-07-10

I love this series. It is definitely popcorn and chocolate not fine wine. That is what makes it so great. It is silly. It is very easy to read. The dog is a great side kick. He constantly makes me laugh. This book is fun to read. It is never a chore to read.

In this edition we learn a lot more about all of the characters. We especially get a final understanding about who or what Jim is as well as who Rene is.

My only complaint is that like her previous two novels, this one is just too short. Well not really but it leaves me begging and wishing for more. I can not wait for the next one to release. I always preorder this series well in advance from Amazon to ensure its prompt arrival on my door step.

5 out of 5 stars I love the series.......2007-06-03

She will get you waiting for the next book. The only thing that make me mad is that Katie MacAlister only come out with one book a year in this series.

4 out of 5 stars getting there...........2007-05-11

So this is book 3- I've read all three- in order- over the past few months. There is a lot I like about these books, I've enjoyed reading them, and look forward to more.

But- and you heard that coming- It's starting to feel like the story isn't really going anywhere. Don't get me wrong- there's action, and things keep adding in to the trials and tribulations- but it's becoming circular. It seems like Aisling hasn't made any progress, she's still just reacting to things- which is mentioned in the book. As frustrating as it is for the main character, it's becoming even more so for the reader.

Hopefully the next book in the lineup will get us going in the direction I'm hoping for, and we'll get to see more answers then questions.
Again- I enjoy them, I will read the next one, I just have high hopes.

Book Description

Refiner's Fire book 3. Kitty, a house slave, always figured it was easiest to do what she'd always done--obey Missy and follow orders. But when word arrives that the Yankees are coming, Kitty is faced with a decision: will she continue to follow the bidding of her owners, or will she embrace this chance for freedom? Never allowed to have ideas of her own, Kitty is overwhelmed by the magnitude of her decision. Yet it is her hope to find the "happy ever after" ending to her life--and to follow Grady, whom she loves--that is the driving force behind her choice. Where will it lead her?

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Beginning reasonable...Ending unsatisfying.......2007-07-02

This book starts out as a reasonable "grab in". It depicts the story of a young girl, "Kitty" (later young lady), who has trouble grasping freedom as her own. She later meets a young man, Grady, who's driven by hatred and past sorrows. She begins to have feelings for the man (who's really a young boy) but is almost driven away from him because of his anger and frustration, mainly at white people. This book appears to have the value of forgiveness, but in the end it gives the imnpression that money resolves Grady's anger problems. Also, their relationship, "Kitty" and Grady, seems based on dashing looks and not of true love. The part of faith in this story is not "preachy" at all which is good, but almost has a "backseat" in the whole of the story. Faith has to be a main part otherwise you can't imagine all the main character's happy endings. I believe this to be a good read as far as storyline, but the moral of the story doesn't seem to play out well enough for you to understand.

5 out of 5 stars A great Book.......2007-04-09

This was the first book I've read by Lynn Austin and I just finished reading another one by her called Hidden Places. Both books are excellent. In a Light to my Path, she really shows how only God can take a horrible situation and use it for good.

The characters were very well developed, especially as you continued to discover more and more about them. Grady's character was wonderful in that I felt his rage, his anger, his unbelief and Kitty (Anna)'s character made me cry.

Although the end could have been a little bit more...something, the book was an enjoyable read. I would recommend her books to anyone who is looking for a fresh and unique voice in the Christian book world.

4 out of 5 stars recommended.......2006-12-05

very interesting book. i really enjoyed it. only problem was thatt the language of the people (slave owners, slaves...) did not match the characters, along with the region and time period they were living in. otherwise, very very well-written.

5 out of 5 stars Another great novel.......2006-11-22

It took me a while to get into this book in the beginning because I hate reading how a slave is being torn away from his family and being sbused by his owner. It got better as I kept reading when the story start to show some hope for the slaves. It's amazing to see how ignorant America was back then and how we still are today!

5 out of 5 stars Civil War Historical Fiction- A Slaves Perspective.......2006-06-28

This book is one of those that can be easily read in one sitting. It's the 3rd in a series, depicting slaves' perspectives living through slavery and the civil war. I was gripped at the abuse and portrayal of what it was like to be owned by someone. The realization that one could be ripped away from loved ones or because of the whim of an owner be whipped and/or sent down to "slave row". Mercy was rarely received, and was truly a gift when given.

The sovereignty of God is weaved throughout the pages, as the reader can see how seemingly cruel events were used later to save and protect. God's unconditional love and faithfulness were also portrayed.

I liked how the author used kind-hearted, loving, God-fearing white people in this series to show that not everyone from the white race, or down south were hateful towards the slaves.

The author did a great job of ending this 3 book series. One of the main characters, Grady, was introduced in the first book. The ending was sweet. It could have extended further for additional reunions from others from the first book, but it still is an excellent read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Doors were modern but still artists.......2007-05-13

There were two different Jim Morrisons, says Ray Manzarek, whose vision along with Morrison's created the group, and whose organ playing helped distinguish its sound.

There was the Good Jim. Poetic. Artistic. Polite. So unselfish he suggested the group split all royalties and songwriting credits equally although he wrote most of the songs and was responsible for the group's singular image. Drenched in the modern and avant-garde culture of the previous century. Possessor of a huge literary bookshelf which he knew so intimately he would win repeated bets that he could identify a book pulled from its shelf, just by hearing a few lines read from it at random. Possessed of a special Dionysian spirit that Ray saw as one of the unique forces of the 1960s, and of a desire to lead others to it. Ray thought an artist ought to be president some day, and that Morrison, with his good looks, WASP roots and Native American shaman vision, might just be the guy.

Then there was the Bad Jim, a persona Manzarek dubs "Jimbo" - a drunk with a mean streak and racist tendencies, who sought to destroy the Good Jim's poetic voice. Manzarek, married to a Japanese-American, felt this acutely. Alcohol brought Jimbo to the fore. Over the Doors' short lifespan - releasing albums from 1967 to 1971, with their touring curtailed after Morrison's 1969 obscenity bust in Miami - his bandmates found him increasingly difficult to work with, and never knew on a given day if poetic Jim or drunk Jimbo would show up.

When Morrison died in Paris in 1971, a death certificate attested merely that he'd died because his heart had stopped. Most likely, he had by age 27 drunk himself to death, perhaps aided by heroin. Jimbo had won out.

The good Jim is worth remembering. Doors music still resonates 40 years later because it was truly creative, and Jim Morrison was a large part of what made them special. Art rock as a movement is usually placed in the 1970s, but the Doors were ahead of the wave, with a sound and vision spawned in 1965 while the Beatles and Beach Boys were still dominating the airwaves with teen music.

Manzarek and Morrison met at the UCLA Film School. Primarily a musician, Manzarek says he was drawn to film as a medium because it drew on all the arts. His wife was an artist. Morrison, with no musical background, was a poet. The three of them, living together for a spell, drenched themselves in art of every sort. Early stoners and acid heads, they were genuinely in pursuit of the muse.

There lurks a suspicion nowadays that modernism, in every genre, is bogus, allowing the untalented, unschooled and unskilled to rip off the unsuspecting. Think of every ridiculous modern "artwork" whose creator ever conned an art museum into devoting prime space to it - when all it was, was an entire canvas painted orange. Or a red one with a green dot in the middle. Or a sneaker nailed to a canvas. Something that made you think, "I could have done that. But why would I have wasted the time?"

The Doors remind us it doesn't have to be like this. Manzarek and Morrison were avant-gardists but also well schooled, drawn together initially through their mutual appreciation of modernist jazz master John Coltrane. Manzarek had played classical piano as a youth, had grown up in Chicago where he was exposed firsthand to the Chicago blues during its heyday in the 1950s, and had a comfortable familiarity with rock and other pop genres. Morrison had no musical background but had mastered a good century or so of avant-garde literature - Rimbaud, Celine, Jean Genet, Kerouac, the other Beats and many more. While in school, they dug all those New Wave film directors. Drummer John Densmore was a jazz drummer and also a Coltrane fan. Guitarist Robby Krieger had a background in flamenco and folk, picking the guitar with his nails instead of using a pick.

Their sound was their own - blues, jazz, rock, flamenco. Morrison's unique poetry reflected his own personal search for the beyond; their very name alluded to a William Blake poem and to their desire to strip away the barriers to true perception of reality. The Doors were modern but still artists, succeeding because they had a strong foundation in modernism of every genre and a background in classical work as well.

The Doors, artists trying to break the commercial pop or rock band mold, faced an uphill battle. Numerous record companies rejected their sound as too different and too threatening. The Doors couldn't coast; they had to be good.

They pursued their art the way artists in more classical genres go about it, standing on the shoulders of those who had gone before, immersing themselves in the modernist oeuvre - that's not an oxymoron - as they set out to create its next step.

Morrison sought for man to become free, personally and sexually. His work hasn't dated because he focused on timeless themes like sex, death, life, and rebirth, using universal imagery such as sun and water. Manzarek concurred and hoped this freedom would effect a social and political transformation. Ecstatic liberation is more likely to yield chaos, as the Doors learned the hard way in Miami when their stage nearly went down amidst thousands of surging fans. And while according to Manzarek, Morrison never actually flashed Mr. Mojo Risin' at the crowd - instead taunting and teasing the crowd with their own crude desire that he do so - his irony was easily lost on the judge and jury that convicted him.

Manzarek's telling is overripe with California New Age speak, a mish-mash of Eastern and Western religious influences, constant references to "chakras" and other mystical gobbledygook, and an obsession with finding "fascism" everywhere. Whatever one may think about it in light of later events, though, it's true to its time. This is what 1960s ferment was about. The Doors went where no one had gone before. That's what artists are supposed to do.

1 out of 5 stars RAY ONLY TALKS ABOUT HIMSELF .......2007-04-03

I bought this book because the first couple of pages SEEMED to be about Jim Morrison and the Doors but it turned out that Ray only talks about himself as if he was a 16yrs old and has no mature writing in this book. Only the last few chapters of the book are actually about Jim and he keeps it brief. He only talks about having sex with his wife. NOT IMPORTANT TO SELLING A BOOK ABOUT THE DOORS AND JIM. THIS BOOK WAS HORRIBLE

2 out of 5 stars Yeah Right Ray.......2006-05-28

Ray should just live life as he really is and not try to rewrite history and make himself more than he is. He was a very great musician and an integral part of the Doors. Yet he seems to be trying to convince himself and everyone else in this book that He should have been the "Rockstar" and not Jim.

5 out of 5 stars Manzarek Rocks.......2006-02-01

This is the best book on The Doors I've read, by far, and I've read most all from Patricia K's self-centered, obsessive effort to Danny Sugarman's work. Manzarek is open, honest and doesn't pull any punches. He is not nearly as egotistical or obsessed with Morrison as Kennealy was and speaks as an insider from the origin to the end of The Doors. I found this book inspirational.

3 out of 5 stars A tale of two Morrisons: Jim and Jimbo.......2005-09-17

After reading this book I was left with the impression that Manzarek has a very narrow definition of what a poet should be. Thus he attempts to recreate Morrison to fit into this definition. Any of Morrison's personality traits which don't fit into Manzarek's image of a poetic genius (There seems to have been many in Morrison's case) he lamely dismisses as the bufoonish behavior of an alter ego he creates and calls 'Jimbo.'

Manzarek often refers to Morrison's associates, who do not share his own passions in life, as 'losers' and 'degenerates.' He describes a friendship Morrison had with two such individuals whom he shared an interest with in horseback riding and target shooting. Obviously, in Manzarek's view, such all-American activities should not be pursued by poets. Thus he forcefully confronts these men and tells them "Jim does not f***ing ride horses."...Only 'Jimbo' would ride horses.

He also describes Morrison as a nonviolent advocate of peace. Thus when he relays such incidents of Morrison getting into a brawl with Chicano low-riders or whacking a woman with a board, he dismisses this as the actions of 'Jimbo.'...Jim would never do such things.

I also get the feeling that Manzarek was not supportive of any artistic ventures that Morrison undertook independently of the Doors. He makes very brief mention of Morrison's poetry publication and, oddly I feel, offers no personal insight into this collection of works. When Morrison collaborates with several friends in the filming of a Doors documentary, Manzarek is skeptical of this artistic endeavor because only 'Jimbo' would lend his creative vision to a group of 'degenerates' who were unimpressive in film school. Manzarek also quickly dismisses Morrison's independent film project called "Highway" as a silly attempt at art... Only something 'Jimbo' would do.

I give this book 3 stars because I feel that Manzarek, unkowingly, provided deep insight into what was a very complex and often combustible relationship between himself and Morrison. It is obvious that Manzarek had great respect for Morrison as a creative genius and lots of love for him as a person. But reading between the lines I get the feeling that this relationship was not unlike that of a responsible individual and his rebellious and wayward kid brother. I also get the feeling, that like most relationships of this sort, along with the mutual love there is also a strong hint of mutual resentment.

Morrison was obviously a very complex person with many facets to his personality. One of which was a two-fisted Celtic boozer with a bit of 'good old boy' American South in his blood. And obviously those aspects of Morrison were (and still are) very difficult for Manzarek to accept. Thus he picks and chooses the traits of Morrison that he himself feels an artist should convey and attributes those to a man he loves and respects called 'Jim.' But any Morrison traits that do not neatly fit into Manzarek's own ideals of who a poet should be, he easily dismisses and attributes these to a man whom he resented and could not understand, called 'Jimbo.'

3 out of 5 stars It was okay, just missing something...........2006-06-24

I wanted to like this book more, but it was just "ok". Some of the banter between the two main characters was clever and I had hopes, but I was disappointed overall. Despite what other reviewers have said, I do not think the characters were well drawn or fleshed out in the least. The characters were not described in enough detail to form a mental picture of them. There were little or no "personal peeks" into their lives, some idiosyncrasies that help define their character, or demonstration of their emotional state. Reading the book was alot like reading a resume, dry, factual, no personality.

I thought the plot might save the day. It didn't. The ending was....messy? under-developed? lacking realism? It just had no teeth. I think the author is worth looking into later on, once she has some more experience under her belt perhaps?, but the book is a miss.

4 out of 5 stars Murder-Mystery Romance with LOTS of Twists and Turns.......2005-01-03

Cutthroat defense attorney meets community activists in this romantic, legal thriller.

Kudos to Ms Jane Graves for giving us a very well written tale. Her characters are complex and believable and the plot has enough twist, turns and red herrings to keep even the most jaded murder-mystery reader glued to the page.

Curious about the title though. I can't decide if it is just a marketing ploy designed to grab the book-store browser's attention, or a sly hint by the author regarding the plot. Guess you'll have to read the book and decide for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars a four and half star.......2004-12-27

I've been known to read a book solely because the title grabbed my attention by firing my curiosity or my imagination. And surprisingly, I've rarely been disappointed in this type of impulse reading.

LIGHT MY FIRE is one such attention grabber. It definitely fired my imagination.

I'm not sure if the title is intended as a testament to the combustible feelings between the two main characters or is used to invoke a certain reaction from a reader.

Maybe both. The romantic couple are indeed explosive together and the hero, Ethan Millner, did indeed stroke my imagination.

In any case, LIGHT MY FIRE is a terrific read, teaming a wickedly delicious hero with a really appealing, wholesome, no-nonsense heroine.

Ruthless, cold, calculating, cynical, high-powered attorney Ethan is a definite bad-boy (and I have a real soft spot for bad boys). He'll bend and twist the law any way he has to to get his clients aquitted...as long as they can afford his retainer fee. His redemption isn't quick and it isn't without setbacks, but it is believable.

Almost the polar opposite of Ethan, Sandy DeMarco - despite having three cop brothers - tries to see the good in people. Ethan and Sandy might be a study in contrasts, but this couple compliment each other. This pair are perfect foils for the other, filling all those grooves and hollows.

An instant attraction swiftly unfolds into a fascinating love dance filled with clever dialogue and loads of sexual tension.

Not only does Ms. Graves sketch two complex, dynamite lead characters, the suspense aspect of this story is also well-done. The murder plot that has Ethan playing a Perry Mason-kind of lawyer to find the real culprit has some really nice surprises and an unexpected deadend - or two.

All in all, LIGHT MY FIRE is an exceptional page-turner. Combine two sensational lead characters with a clever mystery and my verdict is this novel is guilty of a slow burn...

5 out of 5 stars Solid. - ** Grade: A- **.......2004-12-22

Jane Graves delivers a splendid story; LIGHT MY FIRE is a neat little package, shaped into a clean tight form. In the end, the reader knows the author has taken the time to plan this story. In other words, there are no loose-ends -- everything is solid and closed.

Ethan Millner is a brilliant, expensive, defense attorney. He is very successful at his job. Simply put, he gets his clients exactly what they WANT - whether they deserve it or not. Yes, Ethan Millner is very successful at his job, but he is miserable; for Ethan Millner suffers from conscience.

Sandy DeMarco is closing in on forty, and when she turns sideways she doesn't disappear, no she shows womanly curves. Sandy DeMarco operates a small flower shop; she lives her life looking for the good in all people; she is blessed, for she likes people and people like her. In other words, Sandy DeMarco is a lovely person.

A court order forces these two people to spend endless hours together - two people with two different views. Sandy DeMarco views life as half-full; Ethan Millner views life as half-empty, but somehow they view each other with captivation -- cautious captivation. When a brutal murder in Sandy's quiet neighborhood forces her to ask Ethan for his help, they are forced further into each other's company. They are forced to see their views are not so separate after all.

Jane Graves writes a good suspense romance, it is an impressive story. Well planned, well written, and well . . . entertaining. And isn't that why we read? Grade: A-

5 out of 5 stars Light My Fire--Sizzles.......2004-11-17

Light My Fire by Jane Graves is a sensational story of opposites attracting.

Ethan Millner has lived life on the edge, he uses his talents and charm in and out of the courtroom. When he has a brush with the law, his talents don't get him out of trouble. Instead his sentence is to do community service on the local crime watch. Ethan's supervisor is none other then the sister of one of his adversaries the DeMarco's.

Sandy DeMarco is a kind and giving person. She has raised her younger brothers and now runs a successful florist shop. Sandy agrees to supervise Ethan but she didn't plan on the intense attraction with the one man her brothers cannot stand.

When a brutal murder happens during one of their patrols and Sandy's employee is accused. She turns to Ethan for help.

As Sandy and Ethan work to solve the murder, they realize they both have been searching for each other all along. Sandy and Ethan bring out the best in each other. They at first fight the attraction but when they give in all bets are off.

This book is fun, sexy, and emotional from beginning to end. I loved the Demarco family from book one. Can't wait for the next book from Jane Graves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Civil War Series.......2007-06-09

This is an excellent series of books on the Civil War! Although the story line is fictional, they are laced with true history regarding the Civil War. I could hardly put these books down, wondering what would happen next or what decisions the characters would make. We are homeschoolers, and I plan to have my high schoolers read the series for part of our Civil War History unit. They will love them!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great History Lesson For Teens.......2007-03-30

We read the Chronicles of the Kings by Lynn Austin as a family, and because of that (they were "awesome"), my 15 year old daughter wanted to read everything possible that Lynn Austin has written. She read the Refiner's Fire and loved them so much she couldn't put them down, and even read one of the books twice. These volumes will teach your child more about the Civil War that will be unforgettable then any history textbook you'll ever find on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful series swept me back in time.......2007-01-16

Amazing series of 3 books from 3 different points of view. These books were heart-tugging page turners! I felt like I really got to know the characters. I felt like I was there in the 1860's.
Fantastic historical fiction. By far one of my favorite series of books. They can even stand alone, especially # 2.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Awsome series!!!.......2006-08-11

These books grab you and don't let go..... I read Candle in the Darkness twice now and the second time was better because you can really grasp the message. I hope she will continue this series in another book putting them all together.

5 out of 5 stars Refiner's fire series.......2006-05-02

I just finnished the third book in this series and have been very impressed with the stories. I really enjoyed Fire by Night. The stories had great messages of courage and enduring the trials that God puts into our lives to mold and shape us so we can become His. The books, though religious in nature, were not obviously one denomination or another. They just held simple truths that all christian religions could appreciate. GOOD STUFF!!!!!!!!!!
