Book Description

What ever happened to our inalienable rights?

The Constitution was once the bedrock of our country, an unpretentious parchment that boldly established the God-given rights and freedoms of America. Today that parchment has been shred to ribbons, explains Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew P. Napolitano, as the federal government trounces state and individual rights and expands its reach far beyond what the Framers intended.

An important follow-up to Judge Napolitano's best-selling Constitutional Chaos, this book shows with no-nonsense clarity how Congress has "purchased" regulations by bribing states and explains how the Supreme Court has devised historically inaccurate, logically inconsistent, and even laughable justifications to approve what Congress has done.

It's an exciting excursion into the dark corners of the law, showing how do-gooders, busybodies, and control freaks in government disregard the limitations imposed upon Congress by the Constitution and enact laws, illegal and unnatural, in virtually every area of human endeavor.

Advance Praise for The Constitution in Exile from Left, Right, and Center

"Does anyone understand the vision of America's founding fathers? The courts and Congress apparently don't have a clue. But Judge Andrew P. Napolitano does, and so will you, if you read The Constitution in Exile."- BILL O'REILLY

"Whatever happened to states rights, limited government, and natural law? Judge Napolitano, in his own inimitable style, takes us on a fascinating tour of the destruction of constitutional government. If you want to know how the federal government got so big and fat, read this book. Agree or disagree, this book will make you think."- SEAN HANNITY

"In all of the American media, Judge Andrew P. Napolitano is the most persistent, uncompromising guardian of both the letter and the spirit of the Constitution, very much including the Bill of Rights. Increasingly, our Constitution is in clear and present danger. Judge Napolitano-in The Constitution in Exile-has challenged all Americans across party lines to learn the extent of this constitutional crisis."- NAT HENTOFF

"Judge Napolitano engages here in what I do every day on my program-make you think. There's no question that potential Supreme Court nominees and what our Constitution says and doesn't say played a major role for many voters in our last couple of elections. What the judge does here is detail why the federal government claims it can regulate as well as tax everything in sight as it grows and grows. Agree or disagree with him-you need to read his latest book, think, and begin to arm yourself as you enter this important debate."

- RUSH LIMBAUGH

"At a time when we are, in Benjamin Franklin's words, sacrificing essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, here comes the judge with what should be mandatory reading for the executive branch cronies who are busy stealing power while they think we're not watching. Thank goodness the judge is watching and speaking truth to power. More than a book, this is an emergency call to philosophical arms, one we must heed before it's too late."

- ALAN COLMES

5 out of 5 stars The Constitution in Exile.......2007-10-13

The judge writes clearly and to the every educational level. He addresses such an important issue of our times. I fear this is a time where our civil rights are not in the minds of the general population, and The Judge addresses this also.

1 out of 5 stars The Constitution in Exile.......2007-10-05

Could not finish the book. I think it was not only biased with too much of his personal feelings, but written in a way that was very uninteresting for the reader. Got the book based on his appearances on the Oreilly Factor but was very disappointed. If you are a moderate conservative like most Americans you probably will not like this nor his interpretation of the constitution.

5 out of 5 stars Great for everyone who cares.......2007-08-27

If you do care about the constitution then read this book. People on the left and right are always accusing each other of manipulating it, well that just goes to show that perhaps both are a little guilty, and this book finally drives home some serious things. The best part is that it is factual and therefore informative and edcuations to all the emo-cons who are running around repeating the same dogma to everyone about what they think is the truth, which of course they get from CNN headlines and the NY Times not that I am naming names of news sources that suffer from extreme manipulation or anything.

5 out of 5 stars Important Book.......2007-06-22

A great read explaining how the government has repeatedly gone beyond the law. The last section on the "Patriot" Act should be required reading for all Americans. Wake up before it is too late.

5 out of 5 stars Grim reading ...........2007-05-07

The writing stays well inside the boundaries of "well-read layman's vocabaulary" and rarely descends into cant. I could wish for a more scholarly presentation, but the book does a good job with its intended purpose and for its intended audience. If you've ever said,"There ought to be a law ..." this book will give you a lot to think about.

The Dalai Lama's autobiography should leave no one in doubt of his humility and genuine compassion. Written without the slightest hint of pretense, the exiled leader of Tibet recounts his life, from the time he was whisked away from his home in 1939 at the age of 4, to his treacherous escape from Tibet in 1959, to his winning of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. The backdrop of the story is the 1950 Chinese invasion of Tibet. He calmly relates details of imprisonment, torture, rape, famine, ecological disaster, and genocide that under four decades of Chinese rule have left 1.25 million Tibetans dead and the Tibetan natural and religious landscapes decimated. Yet the Dalai Lama's story is strangely one of hope. This man who prays for four hours a day harbors no ill will toward the Chinese and sees the potential for good everywhere he casts his gaze. Someday, he hopes, all of Tibet will be a zone of peace and the world's largest nature preserve. Such optimism is not naive but rather a result of his daily studies in Buddhist philosophy and his doctrine of Universal Responsibility. Inspiring in every way, Freedom in Exile is both a historical document and a fable of deepest trust in humanity. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

In this astonishingly frank autobiography, the Dalai Lama reveals the remarkable inner strength that allowed him to master both the mysteries of Tibetan Buddhism and the brutal realities of Chinese Communism.

Since I will be seeing the Dahli Lama in September, I wanted to catch up on some of his story. He seems to be a very sincere and intelligent man with the well being of his people at heart. I was quite ignorant of the history of Tibet and found the book very interesting and well worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Read on the Cultural Revolution.......2005-08-27

Seeing the Cultural Revolution from the eyes of the Dalai Lama is very interesting and sets the stage for a very sad and imformative story.

5 out of 5 stars Hearbreaking.......2003-08-11

Knowing nothing at all about His Holiness The Dalai Lama or Tibet/China relations I was eager to learn more. As a convert from Catholicisim to Buddhism, I was pleased to read that the Dalai Lama considers himself to be just a regular human, who was chosen to fulfill a specific role. After reading this book, you get the sense that he would be a very pleasant person to talk with.
On the downside, I was absolutely shocked to read about what the Chinese Government has done to Tibet and its people. Tibet is a peace loving country and to be in the army, was the lowest form of life. A 17 point 'agreement' was drawn up by the Chinese for Tibet. Members of the Tibetan delegation were forced under duress to sign the agreement and phony Tibetan state seals were used. Large Tibetan estates were confiscated and redistributed by the Chinese. After monks and nuns were arrested, they were forced, in public, to break their vows of celibacy with one another and even to kill people.
The Tibetan Freedom Fighters were no match for the Chinese army. Besides using bombers to obliterate towns and villages, the Chinese army also crucified, disembowelled, beheaded and buried many Tibetans alive. In order to prevent Tibetans from giving praise to the Dalai Lama on their way to execution, the Chinese tore out their tongues with meat hooks.
It was really disheartening to read about what happened to these people. I think this is a book that everyone at some point needs to read. It really opened my eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-07-29

This was the first book I had ever read by (or about) the Dalai Lama. I thought it was a great introduction to his life and his way of thinking. Overall I thought this was a great book. I think everyone should read it.

5 out of 5 stars Free from the gilded cage -- but at what cost........2003-01-19

Not long ago, the question was posed to His Holiness the Dalai Lama as to why he penned his autobiography -- Freedom in Exile. To this query he responded with: `I am human being who had quite a lot of sad situation, yet my mental health seems not bad. I think some people might find some idea [in my tale], some small contribution for inner peace, for happiness.' The story starts in a small village in the roof of the world at an altitude of 3 miles deep in Eastern Tibet... Lhamo Thondup was only 2 when the monks came to fetch him 1937. The search party waltz right into his peasant parents' farmhouse and things were never the same again. Lhamo Thondup was eventually taken away to Lhasa -- the fabled capital in the Land of the Snows. He was God - recognized through the a dozen omens - skeptics will always question - (a) the way the head of the recently deceased 13th Dalai Lama had turned in its coffin toward the east, (b) the direction of the boy's home, and (3) the vision of the child's very house seen in the lake of Lhamo Lhatso by a Reting Rinpoche. When the young Lhamo was escorted to the late 13th Dalai Lama's room at the summer palace in Norbulingka, the toddler allegedly motioned toward a little case and announced nonchalantly, `My teeth are in there.' To the amazement of the accompanying monks a set of the late 13th false teeth were contained therein.

The Dalai Lama told Newsweek, `Exile has made me tougher.' Moreover, according to his younger brother Tenzin Choegyal, exile has `enabled him [the Dalai Lama] to realize his full potential.' This achievement did have a price -- in the Potala, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was both secluded and isolated. If one positive thing has resulted from his having to depart Tibet, was that he was brought closer to the plight of his own people and the rest of the world. Tenzin Gyatso, now the 14th Dalai Lama was given the chance to see things as they really are. In `Freedom in Exile' the message becomes a universal one - one that transcends a locality and that is what makes this book so compelling and necessary. From being the most secluded leader of the modern world, the 14th Dalai Lama is now among the most traveled, most celebrated and best known. The humble figure in maroon robes has become the locus of attention for the world's angst about Chinese authoritarianism and ideological expansion. The situation of the Tibetans - as penned by the Dalai Lama in `Freedom in Exile' is proof positive that despite Mao's utterances that `Religion is Poison' - we are left thinking perhaps the reverse is true - `Non-Religion is Poison'.

Ironically, this is not the role to which he was born. The Dalai Lama not have mixed with ordinary people in Tibet if it had not been for the Chinese invasion. I guess this statement may never be proven true nor false as it hinges on pure speculation. In `Freedom in Exile' the Dalai Lama does allude to the need form change j-but not at the pace and form that the Chinese used. As he outlines in his autobiography, `Freedom in Exile,' on the rare occasions he left his official residence -- the cold 1,000-room Potala palace in Lhasa -- he moved past his minions on a yellow silk palanquin, pulled by 20 army officers in green cloaks and red hats and surrounded by hundreds of men: monks and musicians, sword-wielding horsemen and `porters carrying my songbirds in cages and my personal belongings all wrapped in yellow silk.' To ensure the people didn't get too near, the monastic police encircled the whole entourage. `In their hands they carried long whips, which they would not hesitate to use,' he wrote. Sad for one so attuned now to the needs of his people.

The country over which he ruled was a land of people who believed the Buddha's tenet that one's action in this life determines one's fate in the next. Since the establishment of Buddhism as Tibet's chief religion in the eighth century, parents had inculcated into their children that all life, animal and human, is sacred. `I have never seen less evidence of hatred, envy, malice and uncharitableness [than in Tibet],' penned Hugh Richardson, British India's trade consul to the remote nation in the 1940s. However, that peace in the `Rooftop of the World' was violently destroyed when in 1950, 84,000 PLA troops launched a dawn offensive against six different positions along the border. According to his account, in 1959, the Dalai Lama, by then age 24, fled for his life through the snow across 17,000-foot Himalayan passes into India in an effort to preserve his nation, his people and his heritage. Since then, he has lived in the Indian mountain village of Dharamsala, the capital of the Tibetan government-in-exile. The book is full of references to a man with a sense of purpose -- rising at 4 a.m. daily to meditate, meet with cabinet members and refugees and pursue worldly interests that include Western neurobiology and physics.

Book Description

The eXile is the controversial biweekly tabloid founded by Americans Mark Ames and Matt Taibbi that Rolling Stone has called "cruel, caustic, and funny" and "a must-read." In the tradition of gonzo journalists like Hunter S. Thompson, Ames and Taibbi cover everything from decadent club scenes to the nation's collapsing political and economic systems - no person or institution is spared from their razor sharp satiric viewpoint. They take you beneath the surface of the Russia that most Western journalists cover, bringing to life the metropolis that Ames describes as "manic, nihilistic, grotesque, horrible; and yet, in its own way, far superior to any city on Earth." Featuring artwork and articles from their groundbreaking newspaper, The eXile is the inside story of how the tabloid came to be and how Ames and Taibbi broke their biggest stories - all the while playing hysterically vicious practical jokes, racking up innumerable death threats, and ingesting a motherlode of speed. It's a darkly funny, up-close profile of the sordid underbelly of the New World Order that you will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars On the Money.......2006-08-29

I am a lawyer from las vegas, that traveled to moscow, russia, numerous times to host a business venture. After my first trip, i came across this book and was startled to realize that Ames is on the money with his description of Moscow. Anyone planning a trip to Moscow, must read this book. It is an easy read and really allows the reader to gleen an inside to the beauty behind the beast that is Moscow.

5 out of 5 stars A Hilarious and Compelling Read.......2006-02-17

You'll be disapopinted and wishing for more when this book ends. You will want to read more of the exploits of the eXile and its two fearless leaders, Ames and Taibbi, and fortunately you can at www.exile.ru. I learned about the eXile while reading Taibbi's book Spanking the Donkey about the 2004 election. Since discovering it, the eXile has been a tremendous way to pass the time at work. Despite finding much of what they describe of Russian life terrifying and disturbing it has not tempered my desire to visit the country as soon as possible.

Also, if you enjoy the writing of Hunter S. Thompson you will definitely enjoy reading the exploits of Ames and Taibbi. They seem to be carrying the torch, albeit a dim one, into the twenty-first century. It is a sad commentary on our consolidated, witless, boring media that some of the most interesting reporting by young writers has to be found in an independent newspaper in Mosocow of all places! The eXile would probably not get published in our "land of the free."

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Work.......2005-05-18

This book is a must read for anyone that desires understaning of russian societal mores. Mark Ames particularly does an absolutely wonderful job with his gloomy delivery explaining Moscow sex, drug and media scene throughout the 90s. I must warn you, this is not your typical narrative about what has transpired but an actual account of first hand experiences that he went through. It is not by any means pretty, but it was reality.

The other half of the book is written by Taibbi, which has a drastically different approach to writing style. His is more 'conventional' with less biased opinions and oriented mostly around facts re politics and media. I personally prefer a dark account of the world from the eyes of Ames but this is a question of preference.

This book is not for the faint of heart, it goes deep into the male psych and examines our primal instincts as they related to various vices such as sex and drugs. If you are a women, and get easily offended I suggest you passover this book for a new release by Dan Brown. Although, if you think you can withstand some unconventional wisdom as it pertains to the expat female scene you will throughoughly enjoy this.

I think this book is a great read for anyone planning on traveling to russia and getting a 'beyond the surface' understanding on the people and their rationality. Having been to Russia numerously I think little has changed since the book was written.

4 out of 5 stars Dirty. So dirty........2005-04-21

I fear that my eyes will get a non-negligible STD every time I read the eXile. Worth the risk? Your call.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2003-05-24

Pants-splittingly funny... Ames is a whiny, infuriating misanthrope who happens to be really, really funny. People who voted for Bush, content suburbanites, and feminists will loathe this book equally. The eXile web site remains the only thing worth reading on the web.

4 out of 5 stars From Heroism to Heartbreak.......2004-11-13

Now that the agreement to allow Cuban Americans to visit their families in Cuba has been significantly scaled back by President George Bush, it is fascinating to consider how many Cuban Americans are correctly bewailing the loss of a right brokered for them by the very man they shunned for making the visits possible: Bernardo Benes.

This book tells the story of Bernardo Benes and the times and circumstances in which he operated. We learn of his boyhood in Cuba, his flight to Miami as a young man, his financial successes and humanitarian work in Miami and the deserved notoriety he received. We also learn about his secret missions to Cuba at the USA's behest, his frequent conversations and negotiations with Castro, and how his considerable accomplishments in these matters cost him dearly in the exile community, even endangering his life. Although the author often strikes an oddly detached tone in his descriptions of the violent and inquisitorial nature of some elements of the Cuban exile community, he provides all the salient details and history.

By book's end, readers are left wondering why Bernardo Benes isn't esteemed as a great hero in the Cuban-American community. It is here we realize that the real main character of this true tale is the Cuban exile community, not Bernardo Benes, and how their grievance long nurtured by hatred, violence, and dogmatic conformity distorts a hero's triumph into heartbreak.

4 out of 5 stars Exposes the power of the anti-Castro lobby.......2001-10-02

This story needs to be told. It shows how powerful Miami Cubans not only punished the man responsible for the process of dialogue that led to the release of prisoners from Castro's jails, but essentially elected George W. Bush president in the astonishing electoral race of that year in Florida.

4 out of 5 stars An astonishing human story among Cuban exiles.......2001-09-28

I was moved by the travails of Bernardo Benes, who put his life and family at risk because insensitive right-wingers in the Cuban exile community in Miami turned him into a paraih because he dared talk with Cuba's Castro in behalf of political prisoners and dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, probing, fascinating book.......2001-09-28

This book masterfully exposes the venality of the right-wing Cuban exile power brokers, especially the suffocating voices of Spanish-language radio in Miami. I can attest to the fact that the book is wholly on the mark. It reveals details about the exile experience that are astonishing, and also very sad. This is the best book I have ever read on the subject, and also on the precarious, often bad-faith relationship between Washington D.C. and Havana.

    Book Description

"Bernard Gordon was the writer behind some of my favorite movies (but I never knew it). Now, he tells his most riveting story--that of his own colorful career. . . . Fascinating!" --Joe Dante, director "As a blacklisted screenwriter, Bernard Gordon was never completely silenced, but it is still thrilling to hear him have his say in a memoir of Hollywood's darkest era. . . . Gordon's story is a testament to the everlasting vitality of creativity in the face of scare tactics and coercion." --Kirkus Reviews "Gordon's book is . . . a remarkable story of how he not only survived, but lived a high life in Europe as a much-in-demand writer--although denied recognition [for] his craft--until 50 years later by both [writers'] guilds and the Academy." --Variety "His portraits of the brilliant Philip Yordan and Samuel Bronston, the producer-financier duo that virtually created the 'runaway' (offshore) production game, are unforgettable, as are his accounts of making, among a dozen other films, 55 Days at Peking, The Thin Red Line, Krakatoa East of Java, Day of the Triffids, Earth vs. The Flying Saucers and Horror Express. . . . His adventures as a writer and producer sparkle in this generous, well-illustrated account." --Foreword "A born storyteller, [Gordon] writes with warmth and humor, and there's an emotional edge to his razor-sharp recall." --Publishers Weekly The Hollywood blacklist, which began in the late 1940s and ran well into the 1960s, ended or curtailed the careers of hundreds of people accused of having ties to the Communist Party. Bernard Gordon was one of them. In this highly readable memoir, he tells a engrossing insider's story of what it was like to be blacklisted and how he and others continued to work uncredited behind the scenes, writing and producing many box office hits of the era. Gordon describes how the blacklist cut short his screenwriting career in Hollywood and forced him to work in Europe. Ironically, though, his is a success story that includes the films El Cid, 55 Days at Peking, The Thin Red Line, Krakatoa East of Java, Day of the Triffids, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, Horror Express, and many others. He recounts the making of many movies for which he was the writer and/or producer, with wonderful anecdotes about stars such as Charlton Heston, David Niven, Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner, and James Mason; directors Nicholas Ray, Frank Capra, and Anthony Mann; and the producer-studio head team of Philip Yordan and Samuel Bronston.

4 out of 5 stars How an avowed communist dealt with the Blacklist.......2000-06-13

I read this book to understand more about communism in America mid-century, how America could castigate some citizens and how some citizens could "worship" another country's ideals while living here. I was pleased and somewhat let down.

The book has two distinct parts but needs a third. First, he quickly explains why he was a member of the communist party. I still believe this fascination was a liberal viewpoint which was carried to an extreme given the recent depression. This section discussing life in Hollywood under fear of subpeona was very interesting and compelling as written from a struggling screenwriter.

Section 2 then deals with his life as a screenwriter working mainly in Spain and Paris. This section really didn't deal with the politics of the time but instead is a personal memoir into his life in the business. I learned a lot of the movie business from a different perspective but actually found this part to run a little long. His description of his side trips in Europe was also very interesting.

There are two important pieces I felt were left out. A more in-depth discussion of his involvement with communism and his current feelings. When he came back to America he talks of how pleasing the return was but he never closes the chapter on what his current feelings are about communism. I think anyone that condemns this man's thoughts without listening are short-sighted. But I also think that he should more fully explain his thoughts, how they have developed and what his thinking is now since that was the premise for the book.

The final item left out of the book were the last 20? years of his life. Since I invested this much time reading about him, at least he could have given a short description of what he has been doing once he left the business. What's happened in the last few years. He mentions what his daughter is doing. What about him? He does mention his wife dying and I was very touched as they seem to have had a very good marriage in a business where there are so few.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It taught me and showed me a life with which I was not familiar. It also addressed some of my unanswered questions as to the fascination with Communism in the mid-century. But it also left some questions unanswered. If the Author reads this review, I wish he would contact me and explain some of his beliefs in further depth than the book.

    2 out of 5 stars Nostalgic.......2000-01-21

Gordon's book brought back memories of the old glory days of the gulag archipelago, Kolyma, midnight knocks at the door and the tank treads red with the blood of pulped hungarians. Though Gordon spent much time suspiciously in Franco's Spain, it is obvious that he is still an old comrade at heart. A wonderful book that should be forced reading in today's schools.

1 out of 5 stars Workers of the world unite!.......2000-01-21

A masterwork of progressive thought. Beria and Father Stalin would be proud. All unenlightened thinking must be purged. All counter-revolutionaries must be liquidated. You can't have an omelette without breaking eggs. Hail freedom of approved speech!

    5 out of 5 stars Complaint.......2000-01-12

This is not really a review. I am the author of the book and wish to call to your atfention that you are running the Janis review twice. That is exactly a repetition of the original review. Since Janis is clearly political opponent with an axe to grind, one version of his vitriol should suffice. Please eliminate the duplication. Thank you.

    5 out of 5 stars Hollywood Exile.......2000-01-06

This book is a wonderful surprise. Although it deals with very serious matters, it is vastly entertaining, plum full of tasty anecdotes about people whose names we know, people we wish to know. Movie makers and movie stars are dealt with without fear of favour. Among them are Ronald and Nancy (Davis) Reagan. Ronnie denied there was a blacklist although when president of the Screen Actors Guild, he was secretly and treacherously supplying the FBI with the names of his members he considered radicals; Gordon, while blacklisted, was secretly writing love scenes for Ronnie and Nancy in the film, Hellcats of the Navy. This became one of the First Couple's favourite films and was run repeatedly at the White House. They never knew who had put the words in their mouths.

Read about David Niven, Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner (not so good); Telly Savalas, Robert Shaw, James Mason (good) and many others. Most of all, read how Gordon, laughing much of the way, turned the tables, built a fascinating career and refused to be destroyed by the blacklist.

This book is not just about Hollywood. Europeans will be surprised to read of the involvement of their contrymen in the McCarthy period. The British and Spanish film industries gain new stature as places where Gordon finds he can work without having to suppress his independent spirit.

    Book Description

The realities of Iranian life are far more harrowing than most people imagine from the outside. Ganji paints a portrait of duplicitous clerics arbitrarily arresting, torturing, mutilating, and executing citizens, all in the name of "Islamic Justice." A system of apartheid has been instituted against women. While 60% of the population lives below the poverty line, the mullah regime has hoarded billions of dollars in accounts and properties in Europe, Canada, and Japan. Roughly 70% of the population is under 30 years of age and opposes the regime. In the year of 2001 alone, 220,000 people--mostly educated youth--left the country in search of better lives. Ganji stresses that the best defense against terrorism is offense, and that the United States can and must establish a proactive policy of helping Iranians struggling for the freedom of Iran, in and out of the country. Western policies toward the Iranian mullah regime have thus far been reactionary rather than proactive. The regime in Iran has been an incubator of international terrorism, aiding and abetting international terrorist groups in and out of the Middle East. The author argues that now is the time for the United States to substitute rhetoric with action in policies toward the ruling clerics in Iran.

    3 out of 5 stars Iran.......2006-03-22

This book provided some evidences how the PAHLAVI dynasty was corrupted. As a result the 1979 revolution was inevitable. Also, the author of book was down playing one elemental factor, which was U.S involvment in Iran's revolution.

The author of this book lacked credibility due to following reasons:

The author mentioned how two assassins appeared in street during his son wedding. The author was able to detect two suspicious persons in the street. The author instructed his enforcer team to apprehend the culprits. However, the culprits escaped. The author was able to detect the culprits because he had their pictures. Once, the culprits escaped, the author purged the culprit pictures. According to the author he was a lawyer than why would a lawyer want to purge evidence against culprit?

The author claimed that he was leader of FFO through democratic election. Today, there is no election for new leader of FFO.

Who is paying for all expense of FFO?

Last, the author of the book mentioned at the end of the book that Iranian people themselves have to free themselves from the theology state without a leader. Therefore, someone comes to this natural conclusion. Your book title indicated that you were a leader of resistance.

All in all, this book failed during cross-examination.

4 out of 5 stars A *Must Read* for Westerners.......2005-03-09

I first saw the author on the "Booknotes" program on C-Span. He was such a passionate speaker, I felt compelled to purchase the book. He does admit in several places that the Shah recognized his administration's shortcomings and was making efforts to overcome them. Perhaps one would have to have been there to know for certain their depth and breadth.(?) Dr Ganji's personal story is truly amazing and worth reading just to experience the run he had to make for his life as well as the courage of those who helped him along the way. The real wealth to be gleaned is a better understanding of the ultimate outcome of the radical turn Iran took in the late 70's and how Western leaders (Jimmy Carter, Nobel Prize winner) assisted the power brokers to gain control of the populace. Seeing Dr. Ganji on "Booknotes" certainly woke me into a realization of just how important a role the US plays in world politics. I'm happy to see this book becoming more available in the hope that others can have those same realizations. Dr Ganji provides haunting photos of what people are forced to live with in a maniacally fanatical environment. Shocking. As a woman, I can't imagine a more bleak existence except having my child abducted to serve as a human mine detector. In contrast, he discusses the priviledged status of clerics and how the citizenry is forced to support them in the life to which they have become accustomed as the saying goes. The book and seeing him speak helped me frame a better perspective on what's transpiring in the Middle East and I thank Dr. Ganji for that. It was a transfiguring nudge. The only negative thing is the price of the book which limits accessibilty.....Perhaps that can change.

    5 out of 5 stars 1979 Revolution Exposed.......2003-08-13

Dr. Ganji provides an explication of the events leading to, during and following the 1979 revolution. The author adds extra zest to the theme of his work when he relays his personal account of the events. This helps to balance out all of the factual data and figures so meticulously researched and listed. The book presents an unbias chronology and is a must read for all; especially at times like these when terrorism has cast a shadow over the globe. Overall, the book covers a crutial event in contemporary Iranian History and is highly recommended for anyone interested in Middle East matters.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book.......2003-02-03

This book has been by far the best book about Iran that I have read in recent years.I think it would be a great idea to use it as a text book.
I must say the ones supporting the tragedy of 79 may not like the book, since the author is talking about the truth and his own experinces.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Revealing.......2003-02-02

Defying the Iranian Revolution by Dr. Manouchehr Ganji is the probably the most informative and revealing account of the Iranian Revolution available. This book was truly a joy to read. Dr. Ganji's unbiased and knowledgeable account and analysis of the Iranian Revolution impacted me greatly. I was thinking about the book for weeks after I had read it. Defying the Iranian Revolution presents all of the aspects of the Iranian Revolution. It gives an honest and illuminating account of all the players, the buildup, the intentions, the consequences, and everything that went on behind the scenes during the years before and after '79. Dr. Ganji's great examination of the Iranian Revolution is complemented by his first-class inspection of Iran today. In addition, the author's personal stories and experiences make the book all the more interesting, courageous, and moving. I consider this book a must read for all Iranians, in order that they will truly appreciate the significance of the events in the recent history of their country. However, whether one is a compatriot, a foreigner, a student, a professor, or an intellectual of any sort, this book will certainly provide more than enough exceptional information, analysis, and entertainment.
