Book Description

In this brief, intense, gem-like book, equal parts extended autobiographical essay and prose poem, Brodsky turns his eye to the seductive and enigmatic city of Venice. A mosaic of 48 short chapters—each recalling a specific episode from one of his many visits there (Brodsky spent his winters in Venice for nearly 20 years)—Watermark associatively and brilliantly evokes one city's architectural and atmospheric character. In doing so, the book also reveals a subject—and an author—readers have never before seen.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A treat.......2006-11-18

Brodsky is coyly, conciously self-indulgent here, by publishing thoughts about his favorite little city ... maybe everyone's favorite little city. Some of these essays are like shrugs: "this is how i feel, this is what it may mean. who knows?" Some are far more ardent, on the verge of revelation. Brodsky's humor, and casual seriousness, make this tiny book a real pleasure to hang out with.

5 out of 5 stars Ode to a floating, perhaps transient city.......2002-11-16

WATERMARK is an apt title for this splendid collection of thoughts and fugues on the city of Venice, a place where Brodsky returned yearly for seventeen years and where in the solitude of the winter months in this most desirable of tourist destinations he composed some of his best poetry and translations. Brodsky's title refers to the repeated traces (watermarks) the sea makes on the canals and decaying buildings of Venice, like pages from a book of history or of poetry, or a novel. He writes extended soliloquies about the surfaces of the water in the canals and in the surrrounding sea that softly and surely continues to submerge Venice. He also writes colloquies of conversations with Ezra Pound's widow and the subsequent memories and opinions of that controversial figure. His rambling discourses while strolling the narrow streets that follow the canals inevitably to the sea are rich in observation and philosophy. His love for Venice is always palpable. '...the whole city, especially at night, resembles a gigantic orchestra, with dimly lit music stands of palazzi, with a restless chorus of waves, with the falsetto of a star in the winter sky. The music is, of course, greater than the band, and no hand can turn the page.'

Joseph Brodsky is at his finest in much of this small volume. For those who love Venice by association or by dreams of history and the music of Vivaldi, Bellini, and the art of Tiepolo or Titian, this collection of reveries is a must. Elegant, charming, stimulating, and nostalgic.

5 out of 5 stars Lover of Exile Literature.......2002-04-20

A remarkable synthesis of poetry and prose. His style reveals impressions rather than what he has seen. The best comparison that I can think of is a dream that you remember vividly.

5 out of 5 stars shimmering.......2000-08-21

For any reader who wants to recreate the mesmerizing effect of walking the watery streets of Venice, reading this book will do it. As you enter Brodsky's very personal meditation on the ancient city that has enchanted so many for so long, his thoughts become your own, and all at once you are there. Dipping into the pages of this book is an armchair traveler's paradise.

5 out of 5 stars A must for lovers of Venice.......1996-12-29

Brodsky writes of his memories of seventeen winters in Venice. He has captured the shimmering essence of the Serene Republic in a series of short essays. His focus, as that of the city, is on the water and its reflective capacity. The water and city mirror an inner process for Brodsky and many others who visit. He explores the theme of light upon water from many perspectives, ultimately acknowledging the mystery of both the city, the water and the attachment formed. These memories, fragmented as light on water, will bring any traveler back to the beauty and wonder of Venezia

    4 out of 5 stars very informative.......2002-08-27

Everything you've ever wanted to know about papermaking and more. This book has a lot of detailed information about the history and techniques of papermaking all over the world, but is so detailed it can be very tiresome. Definitely reads more as a textbook than light reading.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Historical Primer for Papermaking.......2000-10-18

"Dard Hunter is still recognized as the world's foremost authority on paper and papermaking. This is the classic work on papermaking, used as a text and reference in classrooms, museums and libraries." More historical than how-to, you'll find just about every aspect of papermaking covered in this book. Over 320 illustrations show actual pages from rare books and scrolls from every corner of the world, scenes of past and present-day papermaking, tools, materials, and watermarks. A two-page map illustrates the text to trace the 1000-year journey of papermaking from China to Europe, and a chronology of paper and paper related developments over 4500 years.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars An interesting artifact.......2006-09-22

This is an unaltered reprint of a book published in 1912. It's primarily interesting as an example of what amateur scholars (especially in Britain) were putting out in that era. Cranky and usually hilariously offbase, but often fun to read. The author's etymological speculations are remarkable: a supposed root AK is the basis of Heracles, zodiac, yak (the animal), akbar ('great' in Arabic): ironically, the correct etymologies of these items were already well-known in 1912, though not, it would seem, to Mr. Bayley. The author's analysis of the Cinderella story will leave your head spinning!

    5 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......2005-12-20

One of the best books I have found to truly outline symbolism in not just religion but also in myths, fairy tales, legends and signs. I greatly recommend it for its incredible depth and insight.

5 out of 5 stars This 2 volume set is a must for inquiring minds........1999-07-31

Harold Bayley's work will imortalize this scholar. His global linking of myth, legend and fact is a milestone. This wreat work was written long before the word "diffusion" was outlawed from scholarly endevour. Bayley correctly points out the global scale and diffusion of myth, legend tales and symbolism. The sections concerning Lugh, Hu, Stonehenge and Avebury are must reading for every scholar of the ancients.

5 out of 5 stars Life the universe and everything revealed by watermarks.......1998-04-07

A weird, wonderful and cranky book. The author advises you to skip the first few chapters because they are a bit obsessive and not very interesting to most people (they are actually fascinating, but it's great to see modesty in an author). The symbolic meaning of watermarks is explained, but that's just the start, soon the book gets in full swing going off on fascinating tangents left right and centre. Ancient myths, the masons, rosicrucians & templars .Lots of highly speculative etymology of words like "cucumber" (translated as "mighty-fire-father" if I remember right). Smashing stuff. Read it and be confused

    Book Description

Teresa Mandrell's first encounter with advertising executive Rayann Germaine begins badly and goes downhill from there. Within minutes of their meeting, Rayann dubs Teresa a "bumbling amateur." The event changes the course of Teresa's life -- she abandons the corporate world for what she hopes is a more satisfying career in Fine Arts Management. When budget cuts leave her without work, Teresa gets a job as a design artist in another firm, only to discover that the new department head is ... Rayann! But the difference in the woman's demeanor is so startling that Teresa can't believe her eyes. Although the woman she'd fought with had been insensitive and rude, she was full of fire and passion. This Rayann is cold and withdrawn.

To Teresa's chagrin, the woman doesn't even remember their fight. In fact, the two fall easily into an increasingly harmonious work relationship. As they grow even closer, Teresa slowly uncovers layer after layer of Rayann's hurtand pain. When she at last arrives at the terrible truth, Teresa is left with one burning question: How can she turn Rayann's heart away from grief and lead her back toward life and love?

5 out of 5 stars Hope No Matter What.......2007-02-18

This book was heart wrenching as well as heart hoping. So many of us dwell in guilt and agony. Few of us have the guts and heart it takes to believe that there is hope for the future. This book was a testament to living through agony, suffering from guilt, and knowing that the future holds the promise of happiness. The fact that every day there is a chance that the phone will ring with news of utter loss and we somehow find the courage to endure is what this book brings to us. Hope, love, and happiness....imagine.

5 out of 5 stars More than a romance, a story of dealing with life's realities.......2006-12-12

Beautifully written and incredibly moving. I adored this author's novel `Touchwood' and to date I would have to say it remains my favorite of hers that I read again and again (which is saying a lot as I have re-read all her novels more than once). I don't want to give away the plot but I will say that if you are looking for a terrific novel about love and strength this is the novel for you.

This is a very emotional book that should not be missed. It is also entertaining and witty. I will recommend two wonderful (and HOT) short stories based on Lou and Rayann and their life together in the author's anthology `Frosting on the Cake' and the Bella anthology `Back to Basics'. Also look for a continuation of `Watermark' in `Frosting on the Cake'.

From the publisher's website - Teresa Mandrell's first encounter with advertising executive Rayann Germaine begins badly and goes downhill from there. Within minutes of their meeting, Rayann dubs Teresa a "bumbling amateur." The event changes the course of Teresa's life -- she abandons the corporate world for what she hopes is a more satisfying career in Fine Arts Management. 5 out of 5 stars A beautiful sad story.......2005-09-10

I didn't know I was such a sucker for these kinds of books, but now I can't get enough of her books! Beautifully written, be prepared to cry.

    5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking!.......2004-02-01

This book was so sad and I cried and cried. I thought about it for days afterward. Images from it haunted me and scared me. I help my girlfriend a little bit tighter and wondered what it would feel like on some ordinary day to get a phone call like the one that Rayann did.

But like Rayann, after time went by, I began to get past all the grief, and I realized that Terese is witty and smart, honest and rash, flawed and lovable. Very, very different from the first great love of Rayann's life. Like Rayann, it just took me some time to see it. Once I did, I fell for Terese in a big, big way.

This is an unusual romance novel, but ultimately it gave me what I always look for in a love story: belief that love is real and we all deserve to have it in our lives. That feeling is why I read romance novels.

5 out of 5 stars Scary Subjects We Must Talk About.......2002-01-30

Like other reviewers I was caught off guard by how serious and wrenching this "romance" from Karin Kallmaker was. Nevertheless, I think Iit is one of her finest books. Reading it made my partner and I discuss some very scary subjects, including how we want the other to go on if one of us died. These are important things to discuss and I am thankful to the author for writing this book. I don't want to imply that's it's a total downer -- it's entertaining, quite funny at times and emotionally draining, too.

      Book Description

Here in the pages of Watermark, you will find the unforgettable record of a unique odyssey--a stunning photographic and written account of fly fishing past and present in the eastern waters of North America. The trip begins on the trout streams of southern Appalachia and moves northward--from the spring creeks of Pennsylvania to the freestones of New York and New England, from the brook trout lakes of Maine to the great salmon rivers of Atlantic Canada.

Photographer-writer Grant McClintock and writer Mike Crockett first teamed up with Jack Hemingway to produce the acclaimed book Flywater, a compelling portrait of fly fishing in the American West. In Watermark, they are joined by their friend Fen Montaigne, a noted author and outdoorsman, who contributes a refreshing look at American fly fishing in its birthplace, the Catskills. Watermark's essays represent a high point in our fly-fishing literature, and its full-color images imbue each page of this book with indelible character and lasting quality.

This book has some of the best photography that I have ever seen. I ordered it because it has a very special place in my heart. My father is in it,in the Margaree River chapter. Your description of him just warmed my heart and the photo did too. He is Willie Joe Chiasson and I am his daughter Ethel Clark (formerly Chiasson). I now live in California. I was so pleased and proud to see this and I cannot tell you how happy you made me as well as him. I would also like to send my regards and appreciation to whoever else was involved in putting it together, such as Mike Crockett. Do the three dogs in the book belong to Mike? They look like the are having the time of their life travelling around and playing in the rivers all over the country. I would love to hear from you please.

5 out of 5 stars A lovely city and an excellent book.......2007-03-14

American architecture publishers take note: This one's got it right. The chapters are divided into historical periods, and the essays include not only floor plans but also condition reports and visitor access information. The "best" buildings get full essays with photographs. Lesser-known or otherwise deeply buried (but still interesting) structures are included in the "honorable mention" sections at the end of the book, which include an address, a build date and a small photo. There's an historical timeline of Sydney which runs across the header of each page in the book. It's very nicely done. I wish all architecture surveys were this good. Then again, I wish more cities were as nice as Sydney. I should mention that it's all black & white. No color.

When I opened The Watermark, I wasn't sure what to expect. But from page one, I was intriqued...even hooked. Thrasher's thoughtful tale about forgiveness and second chances is a story for anyone who has lived, loved, lost, or made a terrible mistake. Covenant College and the surrounding Chicago settings lent authenticity to the work, since the author hails from that city. The concerns of college life as Sheridan and Genevie are readying themselves to move out into the world, their conversations, etc., feel real...as do Erik's season within the party scene.

It wasn't until Sheridan revealed the truth about Amy to Genevie that I also discovered it; Travis's ability to expose the mystery surrounding Sheridan's past was masterful. I learned enough to keep me flipping those pages and then had to discipline myself to keep from peeking in the final chapter. It was worth the wait. The story unfolded beautifully, giving the reader a wonderful, if sometimes bumpy, journey alongside Sheridan to healing.

If you are looking for a book with a haunting voice, compelling story, and nuggets of truth throughout, try The Watermark. It is a great read!

5 out of 5 stars Not afraid to write about real life!.......2004-09-21

This book is funny and serious at the same time! He makes you believe the characters and he is not afraid to write about real life issues. It is a good read.

Some might find a male romance writer a little odd, but the jests will fade when they read this book. As a male reader, I was surprised how drawn in I was by the characters' story. These are real people with real emotions, the sort you squeeze past at the coffee shop, not the sort that wear hoop earrings while riding horses bare-backed across the cover of more "die-hard" romantic fiction. I found myself rooting for Sheldon to take the risky step of moving from living in his head to involving himself in the lives of others. Intelligent, believable, touching even, and altogether enjoyable.
