Book Description
Acclaimed medievalist and former member of Monty Python, Terry Jones investigates the facts and circumstances surrounding the death of Geoffrey Chaucer. At the time, Chaucer was celebrated as his countrys finest living poet and scholar, and yet nothing is known of his death. His name simply disappears from the record. How could this be? What if he was murdered? Who Murdered Chaucer? delivers all the evidence while painting an intimate portrait of one of the most turbulent and peculiar periods in English history.

Murder and other things will out eventually.......2007-06-28
As is oft observed about the Medieval epoch, particularly the 14th and early 15th centuries, a lot got lost. Bloody warfare and political upheavals destroyed most of the relatively few documents that were produced in the era, and sheer passage of time between then and now challenges historians to come up with definitive answers to questions like, "What did happen to Chaucer, anyway?"
Geoffrey Chaucer, born circa 1343 A.D., is a remarkable figure on several accounts. First and foremost, he created an oeuvre of poetry that was very popular in his lifetime and has remained so across six centuries. He advanced the use of the English language as an expression of culture. He represented the rise of the commercial class to courtier status, as the crown increasingly relied on independent sources of council and money to fund warfare and courtly acquisitions. Famous in his own time, his life can be traced through contemporary chronicles and court records. But suddenly, the trail goes cold in 1400. There's nothing to say he died of natural causes but there is nothing to say he wasn't murdered. Nonetheless, Terry Jones and fellow scholars have titled their book, WHO MURDERED CHAUCER? They say at the outset that their chase back through the remains of the 14th century is more about the question than the answer because their evidence is circumstantial. It is, however, a very persuasive, thoroughly examined catalogue of evidence that suggests that one way or another, Chaucer was not in a good place come 1400 A.D.
Chaucer rose to eminence because of the cultural values held by the boy king, Richard II. Though Richard has been portrayed as weak and weird, Jones et al find him to be a man who wanted peace, emphasized culture and internationalism, and allowed critical and creative thinking to flourish under his watch. He was done in by his cousin, the conservative, hawkish Henry IV who allowed the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Arundel, to institute a reign of terror in the name of orthodoxy. And there stood Chaucer having just satirized several church figures in "The Canterbury Tales." And having the nerve to dun the crown for his annuity. Oh dear.
Jones et al are serious historians who sift through primary documents and interpret a considerable body of scholarship on their subject. They pull it all together in a well-documented, provocative text that is never dry. It is as much about Richard, Henry, Arundel and the world they inhabited as much as it is about Chaucer and his work. It tells us a lot about how the human race advances itself through literature and culture.
Extremely interesting.......2006-12-09
The book takes place in the ill fated reign of King Richard II (1377-1400.) But 1400 was not only the year that Richard II was disposed by Henry Bolingbroke (Henry IV). It was also the same year that England's famous poet Geoffrey Chaucer, disappeared. No funeral...no written account...nothing. Doesn't it seem a bit odd that this poet who served both with King Edward III and Richard would suddenly just disappear?
Perhaps he was murdered!
This is the theory that this book lays out. Terry Jones does a superb of informing the reader of the opportunist and controversal politics of that time. Especially the conflict between church reformers and church conservatives; the "Lollards" vs the worldy bishops. And it's in this very conflict that Chaucer may have risked his life by writing the Canterbury Tales, which exposes the corruption of the worldy priest in those days.
Jones looks past the propaganda of that time and paints a more accurate picture of what was going on in England in that time. Who was really the bad guys of those times? The defeated or the conqueror? And to what great lengths would powerful individuals go to to stomp out unpopular opinion?
The book is far from just a boring romp through history. Their is a bit of humor added in and the book never tries to be too confusing for the reader.
Highly recommend!
Heroic.......2006-06-24
This is an absolutely amazing feat. Impeccable scholarship, daunting research of primary artifacts, and a brilliant distillation of available evidence all merge for this beautiful publication. The end result is remarkable on a multitude of levels.
The primary success is that this is a delightful read for anyone. The fact that it's title character is the father of English literature only adds to it's radiance. Those who dismiss this signature effort as little more than a well bound picture book, clearly failed to give it a read. It is exceptionally well presented because the work itself merits such attention.
Mr. Jones vivacious presentation of this monolithic probe of Chaucer and his environment breathes such life into his subject that he is all but resurrected. He and his colleagues may not have proven Chaucer's murder, but vastly more than reasonable doubt arises after their case is made.
Mr. Jones first work on Chaucer 25 years ago (Chaucer's Knight) was revolutionary. In that work, his exploration of Chaucer's intent insisted on reconsideration of the knight in The Canterbury Tales. He blew the dust off of the conventional interpretation of the knight's tale and revealed the actualities. In this regard, informed academia has never been the same since. Who Murdered Chaucer calls for another reassesment of this fourteenth century innovator. Those who wish to discount Mr. Jones authority because of his theatrical enterprises (which may well include the occaisional dubious historical stretch) are obviously unaware of his formidable expertise in this territory. He is one of the preeminent Chaucerian scholars of our day.
The crowning glory of this endeavor is the animation of Chaucer himself. He is no longer a distant stick figure poised against a diorama. He lives and breathes in his truculent era. We are all the richer for being drawn into his world with our eyes open to it and him.
You'll leave this treatise with an inkling that Chaucer might well be the hero in the end.
A fine, fine, book.
Beautiful and intriguing.......2006-01-31
Normally, when I read a history book, I am most interested in the factual content and the bibliography and footnotes.
If I were to review this book based solely on academic content, I've got to be honest and say that the authors never really answer the question in the title or prove the thesis of the book. Instead they lay out the evidence for how and why Richard II was deposed and suggest what impact that may have had on Richard's servants and ministers like Geoffrey Chaucer. The footnotes and bilbiography are fairly thorough and add much to their description. I particularly liked how the original text is provided for all quotes along with modern English renderings of the Middle English and Late Latin citations. Moreover the sheer scope of materials consulted is impressive ranging from contemporary English and French chronicles to modern statistical studies and linguistic analysis.
However, the central thesis still eludes this painstaking effort. In fact, the book may do much to show that the central thesis can never be proved. For one thing, the tremendous breadth of the evidence consulted suggests that every stone has been turned over and that we may never be able to answer the question of how Chaucer died at all if we must rely on the sources we now have.
But the authors also admit as much.
They acknowledge that it is not even clear if Chaucer was murdered at all. Instead, they use the conceit that they are laying out a coroner's case.
As a lawyer, I find that description a little too generous. The prima facie case is still missing. But what they do lay out is a plausible motive and some evidence of opportunity. They describe the milieu Chaucer lived in near the time of his death and then suggest some areas where we might continue looking for clues to what happened to him in the end.
That's enough to make a good book. . . and a book I would read for its content alone.
But this book goes one better. The publisher has made an eye-catching package that I couldn't pass up. When I say the book is "beautiful" I'm not exaggerating. The entire book is illustrated like the finest manuscripts of the Middle Ages, --because the illustrations are from those manuscripts themselves. It is printed on sturdy white, glossy paper like a fine art book. Never have the late middle ages come so alive for me.
It is as if we are reading an alternative account of the end of Richard II written almost contemporaneously with our received histories of that era somehow miraculously . If there had been op-ed features in medieval manuscripts this would be the counterpoint to our received Lancastrian opinion of history.
It's more than just a deconstruction of history. It's a re-illumination of it.
I think it may be the best book of its kind I have ever read.
Good read.......2005-11-01
I enjoyed this book. They make an effort to describe the age and the difference between Richard II and Henry IV. They spend some time on the poems, but not as much as I thought they would. They spend a lot of time describing the downfall of Richard. The ruthlessness of Henry and his new government underline the power and its pursuit.
I gave it fewer stars because it was repetitive.

Chuck Yeager and the Bell X-1: Breaking the Sound Barrier
ASIN: 0553256742
Release Date: 1986-08-01 |
Book Description
General Chuck Yeager, the greatest test pilot of them all -- the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound . . .the World War II flying ace who shot down a Messerschmitt jet with a prop-driven P-51 Mustang . . .the hero who defined a certain quality that all hotshot fly-boys of the postwar era aimed to achieve: the right stuff.
Now Chuck Yeager tells his whole incredible life story with the same "wide-open, full throttle" approach that has marked his astonishing career. What it was really like enaging in do-or-die dogfights over Nazi Europe. How after being shot over occupied France, Yeager somehow managed to escape. The amazing behind-the-scenes story of smashing the sound barrier despite cracked ribs from a riding accident days before.
The entire story is here, in Yeager's own words, and in wondeful insights from his wife and those friends and colleagues who have known him best. It is the personal and public story of a man who settled for nothing less than excellence, a one-of-a-kind portrait of a true American hero.
Customer Reviews:
A great story that is easy reading........2007-10-14
Chuck Yeager's book was just fun to read. It is one of the books that I hated to put down once I started reading it.
Many of the reviews have called Chuck Yeager a hero. I believe that he is simple due to what he has accomplished through his military career. From humble beginnings in backwoods America to an enlisted man and then on to be a general. Yeager has shot down enemy planes in combat, been shot down and evaded being captured. He shot down a German jet fighter with a propeller drive fighter. Yeager shot down five enemy aircraft in one mission. He was the first person to break the sound barrier. He has flown most jet aircraft while in their testing phase where many pilots have died. I think that makes him a hero in that he took the risk of death over and over again while serving his country in peace and in war.
I have read a few reviews of the book that are unflattering. Maybe he had a racist background, maybe he didn't like people from India, maybe he was this or that. I never saw that in the book but I guess you can take out of it what you look for. Many great men in history both military and civilian were not perfect humans. Maybe Yeager was one of them but maybe he wasn't. This book is not about the Nobel Peace Prize, it is about a combat veteran and his exploits in the air.
If you are looking for a book an easy to read book of a true American experience that shows a man that faced death over and over while serving his country and lived to tell about it, then Yeager should be on your list.
Well Wriiten and Interesting Book.......2007-10-14
Yeager: An Autobiography
His book starts with his early life in West Virginia where he learned many activities from his father, grandfather, and teachers that would be important throughout his lifetime. The book then picks up around 1940 when he became involved with military aircraft, with which he was involved until he retired after he became a one-star general and before he became a two-star general when he could no longer fly high-performance aircraft. He became the best pilot in the AF, ready for any eventuality with old or new aircraft. Their were many sections written by his superiors, friends and his wife. He knew many aircraft-oriented people including Bob Hoover, Pancho Barnes, and Jackie Cochran. Chuck and Glennis retired to Grass Vally, California. It took a while for Chuck to adapt but adapt he did.
The Write Stuff-Definetly.......2007-07-22
This is an outstanding book on several levels. It is a compelling presentation of the development of supersonic jets and the race to break the sound barrior. It is also the story of perhaps the best pilot ever to fly a plane and the Alpha of all Alpha males. If you like the movie "The Right Stuff" then you should really enjoy the story behind one of the main story line of that movie.
A True American Hero.......2007-07-03
General Yeager's book is very inspiring and gives an honest account of how fighter pilots live and die with each other.
This story takes you from the backwoods boy that General Yeager was to the young, high school educated pilot he became for the Air Corps in WWII who, despite being shot down, was able to evade capture behind enemy lines. After the war he describes the various air shows as well as his trials with breaking the sound barrier, which was incredible.
There are very welcome imparts from his wife and some of the soldiers he worked with.
Halfway through, however, the book becomes less than exciting. General Yeager must have mentioned about 20 times that he loved flying "balls out" and that that's how they always flew - balls out. After the tenth time you get the point that their balls were out and they loved flying that way, but just in case you don't understand that they loved flying balls out he tells you over and over and over again.
Being a boots on the ground Marine, myself, I had trouble relating to the balls out references. The ground is dirty and we want to keep our balls, so we tuck them in securely and clean them regularly.
I'd reccomend this book to anyone with a remote interest on this subject matter, even if they only saw the movie, The Right Stuff, which General Yeager was said not to have because he didn't have a college degree.
A true American Hero.......2007-05-24
I don't read a lot, but I could not put this book down. If you are a history buff, a lover of airplains, or war or just want to read about a true American hero, you have to read this book! It is full of exciting "on the edge of your seat" personal stories. A definate must read!
Book Description
Each year, millions of visitors flock to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum to look at the Bell X-1 aircraft-the vehicle in which Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier on October 14, 1947. This in-depth look at the legendary aircraft tells the story of this momentous achievement-how the technology was developed, conflicts were resolved, and Yeager and his fellow pilots became the heroic figures depicted in The Right Stuff. A wealth of historical photographs of the Bell X-1 enriches the text, which includes such fascinating material as Yeager's official memo about the historic flight. This is as close as readers will ever get to being inside the aircraft that paved the way for supersonic flight, thus ushering in the era of space exploration.

Older outdoorsman.......2006-03-20
I thoroughly enjoyed Chuck's fishing and backpacking trips in the High Sierras. In fact I planned a trip using his book as a guide for my brother and nephew from Ms. and myself from Atlanta. We had a great time, caught a lot of Golden trout and saw some fantastic scenery. Even though we were 20 years younger than Chuck we couldn't handle nearly the pack weight on our back as he did. I plan on using Chuck as a role model for my later years in the outdoors with my grandson.
The other side of a legendary flying ace!.......1999-08-11
Although areas of the general's military service are mentioned in this incredible story, the main focus is on Yeager's journeys into remote country regions. Most memorable are his jaunts with close friends and family members into the eastern Sierras of California. Yeager writes and recalls these stories in a captivating style that makes you feel like your right there on the trail. From catching and eating golden trout to walking miles of wilderness areas seeing sites rarely traveled by others, the reader gets the sense of what it was like to experience the true virtues of our unspoiled wilds. General Yeager is a true naturalist and this book is a great offering of the existential side of a great American hero.

No mother wants to watch her son eat dog poop, as Frances Milstead, mother of the gifted actor and outrageous drag persona Divine (1945-1988) would agree. Divine asked her not to see the John Waters film Pink Flamingos, in which the unforgettable poop-noshing scene occurs, and she has abided by his wishes. To her credit, though, she proudly describes the scene and its aftermath, in which Divine's friends overheard him calling an emergency room to ask what diseases his 12-year-old son might have picked up from eating a dog turd ("Yes, well, he's a little retarded."). Clearly Milstead is no ordinary mother. Page after page she provides a remarkably unembarrassed view of her son's adventures on and off screen. With amusing childhood details for true devotees of Divine, plenty of new photos, and judicious quoting from other sources, such as John Waters and his friend and producer Pat Moran, My Son Divine serves as a corrective to Bernard Jay's harshly drawn Not Simply Divine, and offers a warm, entertaining version of the drag star's life. --Regina Marler
Book Description
This remarkable biography-written by Divine's mother Frances Millstead, with Kevin Heffernan and Steve Yeager, the award-winning filmmakers whose documentary film Divine Trash won the Filmmakers Trophy at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival-reveals a never-before-seen side of the internationally renowned actor and drag performer. As she tells of his childhood, their long estrangement, and a heart-warming reconciliation before his death, Frances Millstead brings a mother's love and insight to the story of Glenn Harris Millstead, who would shock his way to international stardom as Divine, the star of John Waters cult films Female Trouble, Pink Flamingos, Polyester, and his breakthrough hit, Hairspray. Following him as he grows from angelic choirboy to troubled teen to flamboyant adult, this account reconciles for the first time the two sides of Divine-outrageous performer and loving son-as the legendary star's humanity is lovingly and movingly revealed through words and heretofore unpublished photos.

The Human Behind The Glamour.......2007-04-02
When you think of glamour you automaticly think of the most beautiful "woman" in the world: the 300+ pound monstrosity, Divine! Yet there was a side to HIr that few saw or understood. This book is written by HIr mother.
Harris Glenn Milstead was the shy overweight femboy who was constantly teased as a child.
Fate brought him into the universe of the budding gay director, John Waters. It took John's warped psyche and Glenn's perfectionism to create the glorious persona, Divine. The result shocked and overjoyed millions and millions of moviegoers and students of the bizarre. Yet in private, Glenn was still the shy femboy who was extremely personal and generous. His only flaws were his love for food and marijuana.
After being enstranged from his parents for years, they finally reconciled and shared out remaining years close and personal. Glenn's star was at last rising and he was being noticed as a great and talented character actor in his own right, apart from the grossout persona, Divine. Yet, as he was preparing for a permanent role in the series 'Married with Children, fate took him from us. Tipping over 400 pounds, he had an All-American heart attack in his sleep.
Few actors can match Glenn's exuberance and hunger for life and humorous good times. He had more talent in his little finger than most actors have in their entire lifetimes. It is sad that he was taken from us right when he was on top of his game. Yet, thank God, we still have the movie records of him and his joys and talents to gross us out and make us feel good.
Get to understand Glenn in ways deeper than him wearing outrageous drag and eating dog spoor for the camera. Read this book and open your mind to the other who made us love him so much through talent, hard work and his outageous antics on film!
Still, they loved him.......2004-04-14
Do not presuppose that this is the story of Divine -- although it is certainly part of the story. Written by Divine's -- Glenn Milstead's -- mother, it is truly her story to tell.
What does it mean to be a mother? What dreams and hopes do we have for our children? More importantly and to the point, what is it that we learn from our children?
If we are open to loving them unconditionally, we can learn a great deal. And there is much to learn from Glenn Milstead's mother's love, and from her own learning experience.
It's an odd relationship, to be sure, with years of estrangement and healing. In the fifties, children did not just "come out" in some youth group and attend regular summer Pride festivals. Mothers of the fifties did not have those kind of expectations -- and the sixties were a wake-up call all around.
But Frances loved her son, and struggled with her confusion. In spite of everything and anything he did that would cause more timid souls to faint dead away, Frances and Harris continued to lend Glenn money they would never see again, absorb credit card bills for exhorbitant expenses they had never approved, and support the lavish habits of a man they didn't understand. Still, they loved him.
As he unfolded into that love, the most extraordinary creature emerged. Who was Divine? No drag queen, for sure, for drag queens seek to soar to great heights as fabulous beauties. No beauty was Divine -- and yet, no more beautiful creature could have emerged from that soul.
Without Divine, there would have been no RuPaul. Still, Divine made us think about the nature of femininity, beauty, and love. He exuded it all in a place one would not expect to find it.
We live in a world full of miracles, and we all too often close the door on them because they are beyond our comprehension. Take the time. This is one human being who is truly a Divine miracle.

A loving tribute to Divine from his mum.......2003-03-24
I first saw Divine in the film "Pink Flamingos" and I thought he was the most amazing screen presence I'd ever seen. I immediately became a fan, and I followed Divine's career until his sudden death in 1988. Divine is a cult figure--probably best known for his bizarre roles in the films of renegade director, John Waters. Divine's film roles include: Lady Divine ("Multiple Maniacs"), Babs Johnson ("Pink Flamingos"), Dawn Davenport ("Female Trouble"), Francine Fishpaw ("Polyester"), and Edna Turnblad/Arvin Hodgepile ("Hairspray"). Divine was a persona created by John Waters, and the Divine character was so successful that the persona stuck to Glenn Milstead--the actor who played Divine--for the rest of his life.
"My Son Divine" is the biography of Glenn Milstead, and it's a loving tribute written by his mother, Frances Milstead. While she makes no apologies for her son, she admits she did not known the intimate details of his life. Those details do not concern her, and she stands firm in her belief in Glenn's talent. The author states that Glenn was first and foremost an actor--very talented and very committed--and that Glenn in real life was quiet, modest, and a good friend--the complete opposite of Divine persona that led Glenn to fame.
This book--unlike many biographies written by non-professionals is well written. It touches on problems Glenn had in school, teenage friends, Glenn's brief career as a hairdresser, how Glenn became estranged from his family, etc., but the bulk of the book includes interviews with those who knew Glenn best--director and friend, John Waters, roommate Jay Bennett, designer Zandra Rhodes, and many, many others. Through these interviews, the reader is able to piece together a composite of the real man behind the drag queen identity.
The book also covers Divine's singing career as he hit the nightclub circuit in Europe, and there are lots of photographs--a 5-year-old Glenn, Glenn's first appearance in drag, Glenn as Divine, and Glenn as himself. The strongest point that the author makes us that Glenn had a professional attitude towards his work. Interviews detail long days on the set, grueling make-up sessions, and Glenn mastering his moves on the trampoline for the film "Female Trouble." In spite of the fact that Glenn was very aware of the physical dangers, he perfected his trampoline somersault (weighing over 300lbs and jumping in drag).
The book also includes a handy-dandy reference guide to all of Glenn's films, CDs, and even includes a list of tribute CDs. Reading the book gives the fan a better picture of the man behind the make-up. The Divine character is larger than life, bold and daring--a complete individual, and to become Divine, Glenn Milstead overcame many personal problems and finally succeeded in his career and in his life. He loved to shop, loved to eat, and he loved to make people laugh. He died just as he tasted fame. "My Son Divine" is a must-read for any fan--displacedhuman
The big picture.......2002-07-25
This is a refreshing look at a wonderful entertainer and person. Ms. Milstead manages to provide a straight-forward account of Divine's life. She readily includes the good and not so perfect aspects of her son. She provides an insider perspective on Divine that we have not seen. Ms. Milstead's inclusion of quotes from those closest to her son truly fleshes out who Glenn Milstead really was. This book is highly recommended for fans of Divine as well as others who don't know much about this incredible person. Thanks to his mom, we know more about Divine.
WHAT MAKES A STAR?.......2002-03-21
WHAT TRULY MAKES A PERFORMER A STAR? IS IT LEGIONS OF FANS? MILLIONS IN THE BANK? EMMYS AND OSCARS ON DISPLAY IN THEIR MANSIONS? NO. IN MY OPINION, WHAT TRULY MAKES A PERFORMER A STAR IS A PERSON WITH THE ABILITIES TO INDELIBLY IMPRINT THEMSELVES/THEIR WORK INTO THE MINDS' OF THEIR AUDIENCE - AND THAT IT WHAT DIVINE DID BEST.
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK WRITTEN BY HIS MOTHER, ETC., THAT GIVES YOU THE TRUE STORY OF ONE OF HOLLYWOOD'S MOST INFAMOUS OF STARS. FRANCES MILSTEAD DOESN'T SUGARCOAT ANYTHING HERE. SHE PUTS THE GOOD TIMES, AND THE BAD TIMES (AND EVERYTHING IN-BETWEEN), HERE IN PRINT FOR ALL TO SEE. THERE REALLY IS NO NEED FOR ANY OTHER DIVINE BIOGRAPHY TO BE WRITTEN IN THE FUTURE, FOR EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT DIVINE (BUT WERE ALWAYS AFRAID TO ASK), IS RIGHT HERE IN THIS BOOKS' PAGES. AND, AS AN ADDED TREAT, THERE ARE MANY, MANY RARE PICTURES OF DIVINE (IN FULL GLOSSY COLOR) IN ALL OF HIS WONDERFUL GLORY HERE TO BE SEEN. A MUST HAVE FOR ANY DIVINE FAN.
WE LOVE YOU DIVINE!!!
