Book Description
In the tradition of David Pelzer's A Child Called 'It' comes the unsettling story of a mute, almost catatonic seven–year–old and the special education teacher who tries to save her from the silence and abuse of her world.
Hayden has chronicled experiences from her long career as a special education teacher in several books, including One Child and The Tiger's Child. Successes in this difficult and often frustrating field can be few and hard won, a fact which Hayden deftly illustrates while simultaneously offering hope and joy in small victories. This time she brings to life the story of a scruffy seven–year–old, Venus, who is so unresponsive that Hayden searches for signs of deafness, brain damage or mental retardation. The author is relentless in her attempt to diagnose the cause of Venus's 'almost catatonic' state, which is punctuated by occasional violent outbursts. In this first–person narrative, Hayden also shares her own thoughts, worries and reflections on the strained relationship with a mismatched classroom aide, creating a rich tapestry of the dynamics of a group of special needs youngsters and the adults who try to help them.

Beautiful Child.......2007-06-08
Awsome book. Torey Hayden is a marvelous teacher and writer. I have all her books and have thoroly enjoyed them. The marvelous patience she has with these children and the love she has for them is wonderful.
great book.......2007-03-09
This was a great book, very easy read. It will tear at your heart strings.
Beautiful Child .......2005-12-07
This book is interesting, even though it was sort of dull. It's got one main plot and a few other smaller plots. But Torey Hayden is a very talented writer.
Looking at others through different eyes.......2005-06-13
For those who have already read One Child, it may be more appropriate to rate Beautiful Child as a 4 star book, given that in many ways the two books are very similar. However once again it is a compelling read and very difficult to put down - like One Child, I was through this book in a couple of days. And again, this is the story of the development of a class of children with major behavioural difficulties over a period of one school year (4 boys and 1 girl, with others joining part-time) and the story is particularly focused on one of those children (a 7 year old girl named Venus). Because Venus herself hadn't committed any "crimes", I didn't take as strong a message as I took from One Child, which really brought it home to me that those we call the worst sinners are generally more sinned against than sinners. However the same lessons regarding the unfairness of the hands dealt to so many people, how extremely lucky most of us are without in any way deserving or earning it, and how we should think twice before jumping to conclusions about some of our least "attractive" fellow human beings, came through strongly.
Beautiful Child.......2005-02-01
Beautiful Child is a true story about Torey Hayden and her experiences with her severely handicapped class of 6 children ranging in age from 6-9. This story deals particularly with her experiences with an elective mute little girl named Venus Fox. Venus never talks, never cries, and never shows any emotion. She however does have dramatic violent outbursts when another student gets too close to her, or touches her either by accident or to provoke her. Venus is deprived of clothes, food, and is being forced to sleep naked in the bath tub in the middle of winter. Her older sister Wanda brings her to school, when she remembers. Eventually Torey starts putting together little pieces of information that both Venus and Wanda begin to share with her. When Venus is admitted to the hospital, it all comes together. This was a good book, but not the best one I have read by Hayden.
Book Description
Color can really make a room come alive—generating the illusion of space, adding brightness, or even dividing it into separate areas. But how can a home decorator use color to best advantage? House Beautiful can help, with a workshop that presents all the essentials: choosing a color scheme, assembling a swatchboard, selecting a precise palette, and troubleshooting. Find out how to use the color wheel, test and develop ideas, create accents that bring a bit of zing to an interior, get great effects with pattern, and combine different shades successfully. Hundreds of photos display gorgeous spaces, and illustrate a variety of ways to work with primary colors, neutral tones, and black and white—along with textured paints and fabulous wallpapers.

Solid Winner.......2007-06-01
I adore this book. The presentation/organization are great, nice pictures, good color design ideas. I read a lot of home design books--checking them out from my local library--and this is the first one I've been tempted to buy in almost 10 years. I had so many post-it notes flagging pages that I finally decided to order a copy. I recommend it highly.
Book Description
Sharon Marshall was brilliant.
As a student at Forest Park High School near Atlanta, Georgia, Sharon was at the top of her class. She had a personality that radiated, and the blond-haired, blue-eyed beauty to match, making her one of the more popular, and respected, students. She also served as a Lt. Colonel in the ROTC, was a Who's Who Among Students in America's High Schools, and earned a full scholarship to Georgia Tech University to study aerospace engineering.
Sharon was the girl next door, her future filled with so much hope and promise.
She was an American dream.
But Sharon had secrets. Deep, disturbing secrets so shocking and complex, and so unique, they took more than a decade to unravel.
A Beautiful Child explores one of the most baffling cases in the annals of American law enforcement. It tells the gripping true story of a gifted, yet mysterious young woman caught in the violent world of the murderous felon and fugitive she called her father.
A complex web of deception thirty-years in the making, Sharon Marshall's incredible story, and the horrifying events that followed, fueled a dedicated FBI agent determined to unravel her secrets. But his efforts were thwarted at every turn by a nation's failure.
What unfolds is a heartrending testament to the profound courage and perseverance of one woman trapped in the grip of extreme evil.

Unimaginable.......2007-07-14
I read this book in a week's time. I cannot believe the evil of Warren Marshall/Franklin Floyd. My only disappointment in this story is that Sharon's true identity is unknown and the remains Michael. No fault of the author of course. Birbeck writes an exceptional book about an unimaginable story. This is a must read!
How Many Years Can A Person Survive Abuse?.......2007-01-16
I started this book & could not put it down. There were times when I would leave it as I couldn't handle any more. What a tragedy in this young woman's life. Kidnapped at age 4? until her death. She was so promising even though she was being abused at "home". Very intelligent & beautiful girl with wonderful things to come in her life to be so hurt, crushed & physically & emotionally devastated. I kept hoping she would tell the family & their daughter whom she adored what was happening to her. In today's society, I think people are more aware & hopefully will question anyone in that situation. I hope her "family" is found & her son's body comes to light. Hopefully, the authorities will keep looking for them. Perhaps before his death? Floyd will release the information on Sharon (Tonya) & Michael, her son.
a beautiful child.......2007-01-07
my first time reading this author, very interesting story I couldnt put it down, very well written, I still keep wondering who this child belonged to cwnt get it off my mind
Such a sad story.......2006-06-21
Such a sad story of this girl who really has no identity as she was kidnapped at such a young age.Kidnapped and abused mentally and Physically through her short life. She was a beautiful person who hid all the pain so well and tried so hard to have her life in some way be her own.
I bet she had no memory or very little of her real family. I hope they find out who she was. Bless you and rest in peace with your son. You both are beautiful souls.
A truly fantastically written heart breaking book, must buy.......2006-04-08
IF you have ever read I KNOW MY FIRST NAME IS STEVEN then a BEAUTIFUL CHILD IS A MUST. The author Matt Birkbeck goes indepth as he writes this superbly heart breaking true crime book which i highly recommend and is a "must read" for any true crime fan. Beautiful.......2007-09-01
A big companion during and after my pregnancy. A beautiful voice. Excellent advices and simple meditations. A dinamic vision of life. I strongly recommend. A perfect gift.
A wonderful guide for expectant mothers.......2007-02-21
I can only say that I wish I had this book when I was having my children - Gurmukh relates her own personal experience in a way that a lot of women in my age group can identify with. Through the beauty of yoga and meditation, she has found a lovely way to hand the power of your own pregnancy and decisions that need to be made back to the mother where it belongs. I recommend this book to all expectant moms!
I feel blissful too.......2007-01-26
After reading Spiritual Midwifery and Birthing From Within, I thought nothing would match the beauty and strength contained in those books. Imagine my surprise when I opened Gurmukh's book and found myself immediately captured by her descriptions of her feelings during her first trimester of pregnancy. I was hooked. My husband bought me the book for Christmas and I am using the exercises and Gurmukh's wise, nurturing voice to accompany me during my second pregnancy.
Wonderful Book - Loved by me and Friends.......2006-11-13
Gurmukh is amazing at bringing in a completely different angle/aspect to pregnancy and childbirth. It so helped me (43 1/2 when I had my first child) and several friends.
Serious mistakes, packed with prejudice.......2004-10-14
I bought this book after reading some very positive reviews on Amazon.com. Unfortunately there are grave misconceptions and mistakes in Gurmukh's book, which means I don't dare trust her advice. Some of the worst mistakes include:
Nourishment - Gurmukh claims there is more protein in broccoli than in meat (p 80). She suggests pregnant women should try a vegetarian or vegan diet. There is very little protein in broccoli (3,5%) whereas there is a lot in meat (15-20%). However there is plenty of proten in soy flour (37%), nuts (15-25%), beans, peas and tofu (8 - 10%). Gurmukh's claim is wrong, potentially harmful and unnecessary, since there are lots of great sources for vegetable protein, just not broccoli.
Exercise - Gurmukh says she once had a student who was a dancer on a fairly rigourous training schedule. She ended up having a C-section because her cervix would not dilate (p 151). Gurmukh thinks her abdominal muscles might have been so tight that she couldn't let go. I have studied the subject of pregnancy and exercise carefully and versions of this story are often used to scare women to take it easy during their pregnancy. Yes, there are exercising women who had to have a C-section. But this complication in childbirth is more common in women who exercise little or not at all! Abdominal muscles cannot get too tight to give birth, it is the cervix and uterus that are involved in the birth process. Exercising women who generally find it easier to relax than those who don't and recover faster after childbirth. Read James F. Clapp, "Exercising through your pregnancy" for well researched information.
Heavy Metal - Gurmukh says that heavy metal is bad for your baby p 88). This is a matter of opinion but my personal belief is that anything that makes mother feel good will make baby happy.
Men - Gurmukh thinks most men can't stand to see blood, are unsuitable as birth attendants and can only do one thing at a time. Now, let's not generalize... the men I know are intuitive, sensitive, brave and supportive. And I can only do one thing at a time!
Furthermore, Gurmukh says that religion doesn't matter but at the same time she recommens that everyone should try making an altar for the baby, celebrate the arrival of the child's soul and so on. If you like a lot of references to religion and God, this book may be right for you.
Anything good in the book? There is some wholesome advice against circumcision and planned C-sections and Gurmukh is in favour of family beds and attachment. But if these are subjects that interest you, you'll get better value for money if you buy a copy of Sears "The Baby Book". The book is not as much about yoga as about how to expect, deliver and be a mother the Gurmukh way. There is a single yogic exercise at the end of each chapter, I would have preferred suggested exercise programs with routines to follow every day.

The Best Baby Book Ever!.......2003-03-04
I received it as a gift from my mother in law when I was expecting my first child. It is simply precious! Unfortunately it is out of print. No other baby book out there can even compare to the heirloom quality of this one. I beg the publisher to bring it back into print! :)

Customer Reviews:
a Beautiful story.......2005-09-08
I originally got this in paperback thru my son's book club at daycare and picked up three copies in hardcover, one for me and two for other mothers as gifts. It's short enough that my two year old not only sits thru it, but wants me to read it over and over. The artwork is amazing, and it may not be a "story" but is a beautiful message of love.
Nice book...for the parents.......2005-08-03
I think the intent of this book is to make the parent feel warm and fuzzy about their relationship with their child, and it definitely carries that intent successfully. In so far as the book succeeds here, and makes for a warm bedtime reading with your child, I give the book some credit.
But looking at this book from the standpoint of a child who would pick it up and read it during the day... I find it at times boring and confusing. It definitely requires a parent to explain or elaborate upon the illustrations, which again might be the intent of the book. So as a bedtime reading book, I would give it 4 stars. As a standalone children's book (something like Dr Seuss that a kid can pick up and have fun with), I would give it 2 stars.
The illustrations are an example of the problem. They are nice, although their relationship to the text is sometimes too 'poetic' to clearly carry the meaning to a small toddler.
For instance [ I want to show you how perfect a flower is. ] will be illustrated by the picture of a mother and child re-planting a flower that was in a pot that the child broke with his soccer ball. And they are re-planting the flower in the child's tinker-toys can. I know... as a parent it just makes your heart melt. But as a kid, the poignancy would probably be lost without an explanation.
Also, the illustrations are very digital. The precision of them, the antiseptic lines, the hightened colors, the 'motion-blur' effects, make you think you're reading this on a computer monitor or an advertising brochure, mostly because the art seems to have been designed exclusively on a computer. Think of the style as a sort of digitized Rene Magritte. I wouldn't reduce the rating because of it, since my kid enjoys the style; I just personally enjoy kid's illustrations that are less 'slick' and a bit more human, but maybe that's my age showing.
So there you have it. Great bedtime book. Not-so-great kid's reading book. Illustrations a bit too composed and 'slick' to make you feel like the art wasn't designed by a marketing committee.
From a School Librarian.......2004-09-30
Within its spare text and quiet illustrations lies the powerful message of teaching a child to appreciate the simple things in life through a parent's unselfish love. This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Perhaps it's because I recently became a mom that this book touches me so deeply - but I can't read it without getting teary eyed. Not really a book I would use as a class read aloud, but a book that I would recommend to students to check out and share with parents at home. I plan to buy a copy for my library, my daughter and as a gift for everyone I know with kids. It's that good.

The Perfect Gift for Expecting Moms.......2000-10-03
This collection of poems saved my sanity when I was pregnant by showing me that the emotional roller coaster I was on was perfectly normal. Ms. Schutz eloquently expresses the sadness, fears, and doubts and joyfully expresses the beauty, awe, and love women feel when they are pregnant. I cried my way through every page and felt 100 percent better after reading it.
I buy it for all of my pregnant friends when they are in their fourth or fifth month, because at that point they have experienced many of the emotions portrayed in the poems.
The poems are thoughtfully placed in order from the prenatal months through the birth of the baby, which makes it easy to read and relate to.
This collection truly expresses the "beautiful miracle of love and life."
