Book Description

Today's young women are bombarded with messages contrary to the Christian life. They need a clear vision of purpose in order to walk as "princesses in God's court." For Such a Time as This: The Disciplines of Destiny, by Lisa Ryan, cohost of The 700 Club, helps women from the ages of twelve to twenty-five find their unique gifts and destinies. It draws on the biblical example of Esther, as well as modern-day role models, to deliver nugget-sized lessons on character traits such as courage, chastity, grace, and dignity. For Such a Time as This will transform young readers into mature women of God.

My teenage girl's youth group at church are reading this book and studying the Book of Esther. As their teacher, this book has been a wonderful learning tool and really opened the girls up to share their personal stories of what it's like to be a teenage girl in America today. They really enjoy Lisa's writing and have already asked to do another of her books in class. Thanks, Lisa for your book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-11-06

This book is written for the middle school ag.. hence the reason that the slang is so far off... (as noted in the previous reveiw) It is a great book about becoming a modern day Esther.

4 out of 5 stars Esther 101.......2002-04-30

Esther's story is my favorite story in the Bible. She was a very strong woman who was fearless (she was not afriad to be herself). Lisa Ryan has done a great job applying this fabulous story to life as a young woman today. I found that the writing was somewhat silly (Mrs. Ryan sometimes used slang never spoken by anyone outside of middle school), but the message was awesome. Every girl should read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book: two thumbs up!.......2002-04-05

This was a great book!!! Even thought I am still reading it, It's already making me think about who I am and what I should be working on I love this book! It tottally makes Gods word fun!

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2001-12-13

This book covers a wide variety of topics, makes them relevant and understandable, and forces the reader to apply them to daily life. Great to use as a chapter-a-day devotional and encompasses everything a young girl should know!

This BibleZine is a totally cool new way for teen guys to read the Bible. Formatted like a sports or entertainment magazine, this New Testament Bible comes to life with relevant application. Based on the success of Revolve, and in response to tremendous customer feedback, this Bible is sure to be a hit!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Refuel is rewrote.......2007-09-21

This so called Bible in magazine format is full of inaccurate wording. Even false teaching. This is a shameful attempt of turning Gods word into other meanings. Not totally rewrote but full of areas with wrongful meanings. I strongly recommend not buying this. I purchased this for my child and certainly wish I had saved my money after I had a good look through it. Better to spend your money on a good King James Study bible than this. Two thumbs down.

5 out of 5 stars Think about it .......2005-07-24

I think these new style Bibles are great. Anything to help teenagers read the truth. There is enough garbage out there that our teens are reading. Some of the reviewers should obviously not be writing a review for a Christian book, let alone a version of the Bible. Sure, it may not be my taste of a sit down and read Bible, but I am long past being a teenager. The teens I have talked to think it is pretty cool to have a Bible they can take somewhere that doesn't look like a typical Bible. Don't let a couple negative reviews keep you from getting any of these for your teen. Check out the New Century Version and make sure it is ok with you. Well, you all take care.

5 out of 5 stars For the Brave.......2005-03-02

I think this is the sort of thing you either love or hate, and if you don't have any idea what it is or what the content of it is so you poke fun at.

Refuel is a good tool for any guy, but it is geared towards high school aged kids. It has many categories in it, including thoughts about girls, questions and answers, challenging your faith with difficult scriptures, and ideas on living your faith through service opportunities.

I feel sorry for the people who can't see the spiritual value in something like this. Guys who have never picked up a real bible will read this, and yes, they'll like it.

I recommend it, and plan to send a few copies to our Troops overseas.

3 out of 5 stars Hmmm.......2004-07-06

I'm going to review the Format, Translation, and Commentary of the Refuel Bible separately.

Format: Innovative and eye-catching, the BibleMag format is proving to be a good way to get Christian teenagers and young adults to read the Scriptures. However, the bible is over 10.5 inches (27.5 cm) long, and 1/2 inch(1 cm) thick, making it impossible to role up and stow in a pocket. This limits it's portability, which makes this non-scary bible much less useful. (3 of five stars)

Translation: The NCV is inclusive and as accurate as a bible written in easy-to-read English can be. It deserves major kudos for a footnote explaining that "the Word" in John 1:1 is "logos" and refers to Christ. (5 of 5 stars)

Notes: The notes come from an unashamedly Conservative Evangelical perspective. I disagree with a lot of what they say, but they have every right to say that Paul wrote Timothy, and that "everything in the Bible is absolutely true and will never change." However, some of the advice is both legalistic and silly (eg. don't kiss your girlfriend), which could undermine the good advice. (2 of 5)

1 out of 5 stars Looks Cool, but................2004-06-16

Teenagers will love this bible. It looks great & reads easy. In addition to the entire New Testamant, it is full of fun and interesting info for young men. However, though the Scriptures are reliable (of course), it is the added notes & advice that should give parents & pastors concern. Be advised that some of the advice given to young men here is questionable and unwise, particularly on social issues and dating. Instead, I would recommend a Study Bible geared toward teens.

2 out of 5 stars Not Suitable for Catholic Children.......2006-10-12

The Golden Children's Bible is recommended by some Catholic homeschooling curriculum providers. This children's book is supposedly a collaborative effort between Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant scholars. However, I did not see any evidence of input from the Catholic scholars. In skimming over the text, I noted a number of areas that would be problematic for Catholics:

The first red flag is the translation of Genesis 3:15. The Latin Vulgate reads:

"inimicitias ponam inter te et mulierem et semen tuum et semen illius ipsa conteret caput tuum et tu insidiaberis calcaneo eius."

In the Douay-Rheims Bible, this is translated as:

"I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel."

The reference is to Mary, the new Eve, and the symbolism is a rich and important part of our faith. Think of Our Lady of Grace crushing the snake with her heel. I love that image! Now in the Golden Children' Bible it says:

"I shall make the woman your enemy and her children the enemies of your children. They shall wound you in the head and you shall wound them in the heel."

It just doesn't have the force (or fidelity) of Mary crushing the head of the snake. It loses all of the symbolism of Mary as the new Eve. Eve brought sin into our lives by yielding to the snake, whereas Mary carried our Salvation in her womb and hence through her yielding to God's will she metaphorically stomped on the head of the snake (which symbolizes evil).

Another red flag is the beginning of St. Luke, where the Archangel Gabriel appears to Mary. In the Golden Children's Bible the angel says, not "Hail, full of grace," but rather, "Hail, most favored one." Again, a seemingly small change, but it makes a big difference as to whether children can discern that the opening words to the Hail Mary came from this passage. It also diminishes the teaching that Mary was not just most favored among women, but literally full of God's grace.

Finally, in Matthew 6 where Our Lord teaches us to pray, the Golden Children's Bible tacks on a doxology to the end of the Our Father, so that their version of the prayer ends with "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen." Catholics should need no comment on the impropriety of inserting these words into the text.

Those three errors were enough for me to rule out this text. There might be more errors contained within; I did not feel I needed to read more. There are beautiful pictures and it's a huge book, but it's not worth exposing children to the errors. Children should be able to trust that their "Bible stories" should contain only truth. I don't know why anybody would recommend this book for Catholic children. There are better choices.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Children's Bible!.......2006-09-27

I was given one of these as a young girl many years ago, and still enjoy reading it as an adult.
The artwork is wonderful, and the text easy to read and understand..I highly recommend it as beginning reading or listening for young people and a gift that will be cherished through the years.

5 out of 5 stars Childhood memories.......2006-04-22

When I was a little girl, my grandmother used to read me bedtime stories out of this book, a favorite of mine was the story of King Solomn. To this day I remember all of the feelings that I had as a child when my grandmother read this book to me. She passed away several years ago, but I talk to her in my prayers and thank her for teaching me the value of reading, of which this book was a big part in.

When war broke out in August 1914, 21-year-old Vera Brittain was planning on enrolling at Somerville College, Oxford. Her father told her she wouldn't be able to go: "In a few months' time we should probably all find ourselves in the Workhouse!" he opined. Brittain had hoped to escape the Northern provinces, but the war seemingly dashed her plans. "It is not, perhaps, so very surprising that the War at first seemed to me an infuriating personal interruption rather than a world-wide catastrophe."

Her father eventually relented, however, and she was allowed to attend. By the end of her first year, she had fallen in love with a young soldier and resolved to become active in the war effort by volunteering as a nurse--turning her back on what she called her "provincial young-ladyhood." Brittain suffered through 12-hour days by reminding herself that nothing she endured was worse than what her fiancé, Roland, experienced in the trenches. Roland was expected home on leave for Christmas 1915; on December 26, Brittain received news that he had been killed at the front. Ten months later Brittain herself was sent to Malta and then to France to serve in the hospitals nearer the front, where she witnessed firsthand the horrors of battle. When peace finally came, Brittain had also lost her brother Edward and two close friends. As she walked the streets of London on November 11, 1918--Armistice Day--she felt alone in the crowds:

For the first time I realised, with all that full realisation meant, how completely everything that had hitherto made up my life had vanished with Edward and Roland, with Victor and Geoffrey. The War was over; a new age was beginning; but the dead were dead and would never return.

First published in 1933, Testament of Youth established Brittain as one of the best-loved authors of her time. Her crisp, clear prose and searing honesty make this unsentimental memoir of a generation scarred by war a classic. --Sunny Delaney

Book Description

Much of what we know and feel about the First World War we owe to Vera BrittainÂ's elegiac yet unsparing book, which set a standard for memoirists from Martha Gellhorn to Lillian Hellman. Abandoning her studies at Oxford in 1915 to enlist as a nurse in the armed services, Brittain served in London, in Malta, and on the Western Front. By warÂ's end she had lost virtually everyone she loved. Testament of Youth is both a record of what she lived through and an elegy for a vanished generation. Hailed by the Times Literary Supplement as a book that helped “both form and define the mood of its time,” it speaks to any generation that has been irrevocably changed by war.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Heavy handed prose weakens work.......2007-09-13

I clearly am in a minority here but I did not like this book. A peer of other notable young British writers like Robert Graves and Wilfred Owen, Britton's book stands out among the male writers of the period as giving a woman's view of the war. The problem, at least for me, is that Britton is so over come with bitterness that she flogs the reader with it from the start.

An early feminist Britton had strong views and supported her male friends and family going off to the First World War but as they fell to the german guns she, like many of her generation, became disillusioned. This is understandable but in writing her book, Britton cannot set aside her bitterness and it makes the reading ponderous and heavy. For example noting a fete in her early childhood and the bunting and flags put out she says "If only I knew then it was all meaningless." we are taken from a little girl's views to a bitter adult in the blink of an eye and it just gets too much.

By comparrison the autobiography of Robert Graves, Goodby to All That, starts out with the childish illusions being enjoyed as a child and slowly the bitterness slips into the writer's world view as he matures and is exposed to the horrors of the war. this is far more subtle and easier to read, meaning you are guided to the ponit he wants you to reach, instead of trying to bludgeon you into the mindset as Britton does.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable autobiography.......2007-03-24

The word "classic" gets thrown around a lot these days. Many so-called "modern classics" are not that important, but "Testament of Youth" deserves this reprint as a Penguin Classic. Brittain tells of her early life in the north of England between 1893 and the start of World War I in 1914 in beautifully clear prose, and her clarity of thought and powers of observation make the bulk of the book, dealing with the war's impact on her, painfully vivid without ever lapsing into self-pity. Like too many others of her generation (and the next and the next) Vera Brittain learned almost unimaginable lessons about life and her own inner strength. To that extent, "Testament of Youth" can serve as both example and inspiration.

Vera Brittain came from an upper-middle-class background shared by millions of young women in late Victorian England. One thing that made her different was her great intellectual curiosity and determination to escape a truly suffocating existence that few of today's Western women can easily imagine. What made her like most citizens of the time (and of later times)was her complete ignorance of the meaning of "war." Patriotism, her social conscience, and a desire to take part in the bigger world led her to volunteer as a nursing sister with the British Army. Her grueling hospital experiences were a revelation to her. Her personal losses are even more powerfully revealing of the human condition. Brittain was a "survivor" in every sense of the word.

"Testament of Youth" is just as fresh and moving today as it was when it was written 75 years ago and Vera Brittain tells a story that must be told and retold to each generation. For every reader who finds the book "too long" by current standards (its almost 700 pages), there will be two who wish they could follow the author even further. But even if you find yourself skipping ahead, particularly in the early part, you will not be able to forget Vera Brittain or her story. "Testament of Youth" is one of the great autobiographies of the past 100 years.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves Wider Readership.......2006-06-03

This is a fascinating, insightful book that it would behoove many of us modern folk to read. Learn about the harder times of the past, while sipping latte in a comfy chair. You'll be thankful for today's comforts -- and today's modern attitudes towards the capabilities and intelligence of women -- after you read what it was like for one woman early in the 20th century. Simply a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Testamony.......2006-04-23

Vera Brittain enrolled in Summerville College, Oxford, in a time before degrees were granted to women. This was just before The First World War changed almost everything for almost everyone. When it was over, her best friends, her fiance and her brother had all been killed. She also personally witnessed the agony of thousands in the surgical wards where she worked as a volunteer nurse.

In response, she became a suffragette, a feminist and a liberal writer and lecturer. She sought to prevent such tragedy from reoccurring.

The answers to the political and social questions with which she struggled elude us still. But Vera Brittain's autobiographical account of her generation's trials, Testament of Youth, remains both a stunningly-honest portrait of a courageous young woman and a vivid chronicle of a time almost out of living memory. Through her words we see what we might have thought, felt and believed, had we been born into her era.

4 out of 5 stars Great WWI Living History.......2005-11-26

A real sleeper - I'm surprised after reading it that the book isn't more well known. Very well written and compelling. The author juxtaposes the war and it's history with the daily life of the people living it. She's a keen observer of both history and human nature. She does, I think, leave out some history that seems important now but maybe they weren't to her at the time. Highly recomended.

More than 80 projects drawn from archaeological evidence and Bible descriptions make Old Testament days come alive in this activity guide for children ages 5 to 12. Children can enjoy a desert picnic of dried figs, goat’s milk cheese, and lentil stew, or make a loose tunic like the one young Isaac wore on his family’s trek to the Promised Land nearly 4,000 years ago. They can make a painted throwing stick or a wooden paddle doll like the ones Moses might have played with in the Pharoah’s palace, and build toy instruments like those the Israelites used to celebrate their return to Jerusalem in approximately 538 B.C. Games, recipes, crafts, and just enough historical background provide plenty of educational fun for home or school.

This is a fantastic resource for use with children. This resource helps children learn realities about life during bible times. It also has a wide variety of activities, not just the same activity done different ways. The activities take some time and may be a little messy but they are excellent for involvement and for learning.

It is really wonderful to be able to help our childen understand the Sumerian or Egyptian culture by having our children create a clay tablet with cuneiform writing or by making a wooden "paddle doll" as the Egyptian children may have done. We have eaten meals that the Hebrews may have eaten in the desert, and will be making a bee hive that is based on one they may have used. Our kids love the projects in this book. The projects are easy enough for very young children to do, and most can be done with materials you have around the house, or could be purchased easily and inexpensively. The text is very informative, too, and can be used as a read-aloud with younger children in order to throw a little more light on the culture of the peoples we are studying.

5 out of 5 stars Old Testament Days brings the Old Testament to life!.......2000-04-21

Nancy I. Sanders has compliled a wonderful book of activities that will greatly enrich any child's Bible education. Sanders briefly explains concepts/stories from the Old Testament (starting with the days of Abraham and ending with the days of Nehemiah)and then gives a simple enrichment activity to help recreate a moment from Biblical times. A few of the fun activities include making a lyre, building a salt-dough map, creating a seal and reinacting a day at a market in Jerusalem. If you want to bring the Old Testament to life for children, this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written and contains a wealth of information.......2005-10-11

I teach high school religion and decided to use this book as my textbook for the Old Testament. I am extremely happy with the book. It contains an incredible wealth of knowledge, but is still easy enough for high school freshwomen to understand. I am especially impressed with the carefully thought out wording of the book. The wording does not make judgements for the reader, but instead it allows the reader to decide things for herself. Overall, this is a great book for learning about the Old Testament, and it is honest in what it says about the bible, which is very hard to find.

Another great resource from Mark & Youth Specialities. Great follow-up to the first book!

Lessons are interactive and interesting - Mark has the ability to bring the truth to this age group in such a non-threatening, age appropriate way. All of the activities, games and lessons layer upon each other and really allow the students to learn from each other as much as they learn from you. The "wild truth" is this is the kind of teaching that is retained and incorporated into your students lives and belief system in a way that lectures and indoctrinating will never accomplish.

    Highly recommend!

This is such a repetition of the first book, I'm not sure why they came out with a sequel. And the first one wasn't that effective. After trying it, I decided not to use Oesteicher's books.

5 out of 5 stars The best book to get your life on track!.......2003-09-09

This book was fabulous! The Bible book of James is an incredibly powerful book already, but Bill Myer's just makes it so understandable, and so powerful! It's in a formula that was just so easy to have God convict me, and it really put my relationship with Jesus back on track!
