Book Description

The book you hold in your hands is revolutionary, a groundbreaking exploration of the science of intention. It is also the first book to invite you, the reader, to take an active part in its original research. Drawing on the findings of leading scientists on human consciousness from around the world, The Intention Experiment demonstrates that thought is a thing that affects other things. Thought generates its own palpable energy that you can use to improve your life, to help others around you, and to change the world.

In The Intention Experiment, internationally bestselling author Lynne McTaggart, an award-winning science journalist and leading figure in the human consciousness studies community, presents a gripping scientific detective story and takes you on a mind-blowing journey to the farthest reaches of consciousness. She profiles the colorful pioneers in intention science and works with a team of renowned scientists from around the world, including physicist Fritz-Albert Popp of the International Institute of Biophysics and Dr. Gary Schwartz, professor of psychology, medicine, and neurology at the University of Arizona, to determine the effects of focused group intention on scientifically quantifiable targets -- animal, plant, and human.

The Intention Experiment builds on the discoveries of McTaggart's first book, international bestseller The Field: The Quest for the Secret Force of the Universe, which documented discoveries that point to the existence of a quantum energy field. The Field created a picture of an interconnected universe and a scientific explanation for many of the most profound human mysteries, from alternative medicine and spiritual healing to extrasensory perception and the collective unconscious. The Intention Experiment shows you myriad ways that all this information can be incorporated into your life.

After narrating the exciting developments in the science of intention, McTaggart offers a practical program to get in touch with your own thoughts, to increase the activity and strength of your intentions, and to begin achieving real change in your life. After you've begun to realize the amazing potential of focused intention, and the times when it is most powerful, McTaggart invites you to participate in an unprecedented experiment: Using The Intention Experiment website to coordinate your involvement and track results, you and other participants around the world will focus your power of intention on specific targets, giving you the opportunity to become a part of scientific history.

The Intention Experiment redefines what a book does. It is the first "living" book in three dimensions. The book's text and website are inextricably linked, forming the hub of an entirely self-funded research program, the ultimate aim of which is philanthropic. An original piece of scientific investigation that involves the reader in its quest, The Intention Experiment explores human thought and intention as a tangible energy -- an inexhaustible but simple resource with an awesome potential to focus our lives, heal our illnesses, clean up our communities, and improve the planet.

The Intention Experiment also forces you to rethink what it is to be human. As it proves, we're connected to everyone and everything, and that discovery demands that we pay better attention to our thoughts, intentions, and actions. Here's how you can.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING..........2007-10-02

"The Intention Experiment" by Lynn McTaggart provides fascinating insights on intentional living. This book shows you how thought can affect your life. In essence thought is an energy that has the potential to transform your own life as well as help others.

Focused group intention is also shown to be a highly powerful tool in affecting animals, plants and humans.

Also, the reader is invited to become involved in a research experiment about the power of human thought.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-09-26

This book has a wonderful compilation of scientific studies about intention! It is very easy to read and understand. I was amazed at the
scientific research that has been completed in this area, and even more
surprised that so few of us are aware of this research.

Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-09-13

You may believe the reports in the book or you might just be a blind defender of the "offcial" science, but in both cases this is a book to read.
I will suggest it to all my friends.

4 out of 5 stars Advancing the body of knowledge.......2007-09-10

This is a wonderful book, bringing forth highly complex knowledge in a digestible form. It helps if the reader is analytical by nature. Thank you to Lynne Taggart for her writing style and depth of coverage of the topic. I am learning from this book how and why prayer works.

5 out of 5 stars Could You Imagine?.......2007-09-10

Picture this... A World with Peace, a World with Love, A World where EVERYONE has enough. If I am to understand what Lynne McTaggart is saying here, then I am to understand that a simple change in Our Collective thoughts 'could' change Our World. Peace, Love, Harmony. Groovy.

Book Description

Yoga Nidra means "Yogic Sleep". It is a deep relaxation in which you leave the waking state, go past the dreaming state, and enter into the deep sleep state, while remaining fully awake and alert. This state of awareness is extremely beneficial, both for releasing stress, and for experiencing the joy of subtler spiritual explorations or experiences.

The voice will systematically guide you to explore your physical body, then move through 61 specific points within the body, and then practice ascending breath awareness along the body and spine. Your attention will be brought to the space between the eyebrows, then to the throat, and finally to the heart center, where you will go deep into stillness and silence, beyond the activities of the mind.

Following the custom of the ancient sages, the depth of Yoga Nidra comes from inner awareness of the levels of your own self, including your body, breath, and the subtler mind, rather than diverting attention throuh music or inner fantasies. This inner exploring through self-awareness is a more refined form of meditation that leads you deeper into the stillness and silence of your own being, while remaining fully awake and aware. The Yoga Nidra methods bring you to a place of awareness where you are able to completely let go of any words, thoughts, images, impressions, or pictures in the mind. You are guided to allow your mind to "empty, empty, empty" though you remain fully awake and clear of mind.

The practices on this CD will gently train your ability to direct your own attention, which is the primary skill in the art of meditation. You will find that you are gradually able to use these methods on your own, without the CD, and the benefits will be with you not only during your practice time, but also during the activities of daily life.

The Yoga Nidra CD has five tracks. The first track is an introduction (8:02 minutes), describing the state of Yoga Nidra and the practices on the CD. The next four tracks move through four sequential practices that are listened to together, so as to form a complete practice of 57:24 minutes (CD is 65:36 minutes in total). These four tracks can also be listened to individually, as complete practices unto themselves, which allows you to have the benefits of practice when less time is available.

After some time of practicing Yoga Nidra, you will naturally find it to be a most enjoyable and spiritually inspiring part of your life.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of a Wonderful Journey.......2007-09-28

I just got my Yoga Nidra CD yesterday. My husband and I put it on last night. The sound quality is very good. The voice is very clean and clear. Unfortunately, we fell asleep before we could really get into the meditation. Actually, he fell asleep and his snoring was not conducive to my meditation! I turned the CD off and tried it again later. Then, I fell asleep within a few minutes.

I thought this morning would be a good time to try again and I must say, I was amazed. I didn't fall asleep, but at one point, I did pass quickly through a "dream." It was quite vivid, but very short. During the first part of the meditation, my mind was very active. The voice would say, "Be aware of your forehead." I was aware of my forehead and within a split moment, I was aware of something else! The voice said, "Be aware of your nostrils." I was aware of my nostrils and the breath going in and out, then suddenly I was aware of the bills I had to pay today. Towards the end of my meditation, though, I noticed the stray thoughts started to become fewer and I was able to focus longer on the body part I was supposed to be focusing on. I made it to the 10 minute silent part, the last track, of the cd before my dog started scratching on my bedroom door. I was a bit disappointed at not being able to make it through the entire CD, but what I did do had a very calming effect on the rest of my day. It wasn't a sluggish calm, but a refreshing calm. My muscles felt relaxed, as well as my mind. I can't wait to try again tomorrow. This time, I'll bring the dog in the room with me, so she won't scratch on the door. Maybe she'll make it to Nidra, too!

Giving in to this CD gives you a good hour of relaxation. And puts you into a relaxing deep, yet conscious sleep. I personally remember laying on my mat and starting, within what seemed like minute all I remebered was the voice telling me to awake. But when I looked at my clock an entire hour had passed.

In his follow-up to Full Catastrophe Living--a book in which he presented basic meditation techniques as a way of reducing stress and healing from illness--here Jon Kabat-Zinn goes much more deeply into the practice of meditation for its own sake. To Kabat-Zinn, meditation is important because it brings about a state of "mindfulness," a condition of "being" rather than "doing" during which you pay attention to the moment rather than the past, the future, or the multitudinous distractions of modern life. In brief, rather poetic chapters, he describes different meditative practices and what they can do for the practitioner. The idea that meditation is "spiritual" is often confusing to people, Kabat-Zinn writes; he prefers to think of it as what you might call a workout for your consciousness. This book makes learning meditation remarkably easy (although practicing it is not). But it also makes it seem infinitely appealing. --Ben Kallen

5 out of 5 stars A great life improvement tool book!.......2007-10-14

Jon Kabat-Zinn is the master of mindfulness. I was impressed with him as a person and teacher when attending one of his workshops last year. I think readers will be impressed with this solid introduction to his work.
I continue to regularly use this book as a resource and have gifted copies to friends.

Even if you are not yet familiar with mindfulness - or even meditation - this book is a great read for "busy" people who want more peace and tranquility in their lives. I think you will find that as you work through this book, you not only will experience more calm, but you also will experience more energy and joy within your day. Who wouldn't benefit from that?

This book is a great instruction manual for becoming more present in EACH moment of your day - whether at the office, at home with the family or anywhere else.

Use this book to learn to live more fully in the present moment and you will see your life improve. This is such a simple read, with many very brief (2-3 page) chapters. There are many gems within these pages.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A stellar example of the meaning of the word "excellence.".......2007-10-05

If you are interested in spirituality and/or meditation and are looking for a book that is both deep and clear, this is the book to read. You will find that the book is worth several book on the same subject by other people -- and it does it in an articulate, elevated, succint, no-fluff manner that will impress the heck out of you as few books ever will. I must ad a warning, more about the subject matter than about the book per se: Not everyone is ready to assimilate its contents (or any other equally serious meditation book's content, for that matter). The saying that you have to be ready for something in order to understand it applies very much in this case. I can imagine that it could be taken as too ethereal by some people -- those who are not ready. You would need to have lived and realized that there are matters of the soul that you need to take care of to receive its message. But if you are genuinely thirsty about spiritual matters: order it right away! This makes what we normally take as "Eastern" concepts accessible to an educated Western mind, and you realize that there is no need to think of it as Eastern or buddhist or use any label at all. I am really thankful for this book. You will be too.

5 out of 5 stars Wherever You Go, There You Are.......2007-09-28

This can be a life changing book. It clearly outlines the concepts and methods of awareness meditation. I keep a copy on hand to give to people who paths I cross who appear to be lost in the happenings of daily life or those who are suffering major crisis. Whenever it is best to stop the world and get off. If only for a breath.

it's easy to meditate when the book puts you to sleep. oh yeah, don't forget to send more money for the tapes. must be so you can tape your eyes open while reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Book Title Says It All!.......2007-09-16

I have read several of Kabat-Zinn's works and find they are terrific self-helps! "Wherever You Go . . ." is a short, cogent helper to enable the reader to break out of the rut and look at life from a different position. The book is non-denominational and not dogmatic! Any person of any faith or atheist can find the text helpful and instructional. There are eastern philosophical references and some of the meditational technique is based on centuries old practices & techniques. This is one of the books that helped me change my life and resolve some old internal issues. It has also helped my play in Tai Chi Chuan. I highly recommend it!

Book Description

In this rare work of public disclosure, filmmaker David Lynch describes his personal methods of capturing and working with ideas, and the immense creative benefits he has experienced from the practice of meditation

Over the last four decades, David Lynch has created some of the best-known and widely discussed screen works of our time. This distinctive writer-director's art bears not only the mark of box-office success but also criticalacclaim and cultural posterity.

Yet Lynch generally reveals little of himself, or the ideas behind his work. Now he provides a rare window into his methods as an artist and his personal working style. In Catching the Big Fish, Lynch writes candidly about the tremendous creative benefits he has gained from his thirty-two-year commitment to practicing Transcendental Meditation.

In brief chapters, Lynch describes the experience of "diving within" and "catching" ideas like fish-and then preparing them for television or movie screens, and other mediums in which Lynch works, such as photography and painting.

In the book's first section, Lynch discusses the development of his ideas-where they come from, how he grasps them, and which ones appeal to him the most. He then shares his passion for "the doing"-whether moviemaking, painting, or other creative expressions. Lynch talks specifically about how he puts his thoughts into action and how he engages with others around him. Finally, he discusses the self and the surrounding world -and how the process of "diving within" that has so deeply affected his own work can directly benefit others.

Catching the Big Fish provides unprecedented insight into Lynch's methods, as it also offers a set of practical ideas that speak to matters of personal fulfillment, increased creativity, and greater harmony with one's surroundings.

The book comes as a revelation to the legion of fans who have longed to better understand Lynch's deeply personal vision. And it is equally intriguing to anyone who grapples with questions such as: "Where do ideas come from?" and "How can I nurture creativity?

5 out of 5 stars A very simple, incredibly profound book, a must read.......2007-10-01

David Lynch is considered by many to be the most artistic film maker of our time and he rarely if ever speaks about his personal life and rarely speaks in public so I was thrilled to see this book. I know some of his films are studied individually for an entire semesters course credit at many universities in the U.S. and probably in other countries as well. I love his style of writing and the references to the Vedic Wisdom of India.
The book is simple, concise and it is as if the man is speaking to you.
There is no fluff and no pretense. A very refreshing book with some very deep knowledge. Thank you Mr. Lynch

3 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped for.......2007-08-29

It wasn't what I was hoping for, so I gave it a lower rating.
That might not be fair.
Just, I was hoping for something that describes TM more. Technique, etc...

What it is, is a fan book.
There are a few tokens of wisdom in there though.

It will have a good place on the coffee table or in the waiting room at the dentist.

4 out of 5 stars Catching The Big Fish.......2007-08-23

How a creative master uses the discipline of meditation to allow creative ideas to florish.

2 out of 5 stars Meditation should ground you in the physical realm.......2007-08-16

There is no excuse for escaping by attempting to transcend. This is possibly the result of an inability to relate to one's physical reality.
It is apparent in the creative works of David Lynch.

3 out of 5 stars Exceedingly pleasant, but..........2007-08-11

This is a slim but delightful book that imparted a feeling of well-being to me. The whimsical writing, the understated tone, and the stream-of-consciousness structure are wonderful.

Unfortunately, it is also very frustrating at times. For one thing, whenever he touches on anything scientific (e.g., Unified Field Theory), it is clear he has no idea what he's talking about. He speaks of physical laws and consciousness as if they're the same thing, which is a bit absurd. Consciousness is a specific biological process which, like everything, functions according to physical laws, but that's about where the relation ends. You might as well say that quantum theory is the same thing as perspiration, or that superstring theory is the same thing as leaves turning red in autumn.

Another problem is that he spends a lot of time talking about how wonderful Transcendental Meditation(TM) is, but then doesn't provide any instruction on how to get started with it, or even a reference to further information. Why go on about how wonderful something is without providing any avenue for further exploration?

Anyway, it's certainly a cheerful read overall, and I'd recommend it for that. But some of it should be taken with a grain of salt.

This was indeed a good read and uplifting to one's basic inner instincts just what we need in todays madding world! Bob is kind of a turn on as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read........2007-08-24

Straight forward, honest, hard hitting style of writing for people who want more information and instructions on The Law of Attraction. This author obviously lives "The Secret" on a daily basis!!

5 out of 5 stars Wealth beyond Reason.......2007-07-27

Just the perfect follow up ( or precurser) to The Secret. Both books pretty much support the thinking of the other and in many instances they clarify some points in boh books. An excellent read for those interested in improving their personal growth and emotional wealth as well as tangible wealth.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding That You Are Deserving!.......2007-04-11

This is truly an amazing book. Bob brings about easy to understand strategies, principles, practices, advice, and so much more. Again, I say easy to understand, meaning not so deep it becomes meaningless to the general public. Bob is truly a mentor I intend to keep on my radar. I loved this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very enlightening!!.......2007-03-30

I have read many books on the Law of Attraction over the last six months and although I kept learning new techniques and the foundations about why this law is absolutely true, I must admit that Wealth Beyond Reason has had a huge impact. The book is straight to the point about what you need to do to purposely and intentionally activate the law and why it simply does not work for most people (and how to avoid those mistakes). I can go on and on about how great of a book this is and since reading it, I have started to have some great results in my life.

In the past I might have seen these circumstances as "coincidence" but after reading the book I have learned how to leverage these experiences into acquiring more of what I want out of life. I highly recommend the book to anyone that is currently a student of Law of Attration.

Book Description

Everything You Need to Know to Feel Go(o)d is Candace Pert’s response to the questions she’s been asked in her worldwide travels ever since the publication of her book Molecules of Emotion, and her appearance in the film What the Bleep Do We Know?! She discovered that, at the end of the day, all people really want to know is how to feel good.
Within these pages, Dr. Pert shares the answers she’s found, both in the biomedical laboratory of mainstream science and in the laboratory of her own evolving life. Her amazing journey documents how mind, body, and spirit cannot be separated; and that we’re hard-wired for bliss, which is both physical and divine. Feeling good and feeling God, she believes, are one and the same.
From beginning to end, this book takes us on an entertaining romp through the many bodymind avenues, separating the woo-woo from real science and pointing the way toward using new paradigm therapies, detoxing our food and environment, forgiving and healing our relationships, understanding depression, staying young, and creating the reality we want to experience. Consciousness, mind, emotions, and God are all factored into the mix, resulting in a lot of beneficial advice and self-development insights that will empower us toward health, well-being, and feeling . . . Go(o)d.

5 stars for Dr. Pert honestly recognizing
that the "GOOD" feelings we all seek
have a source.
5 stars for Dr. Pert using (and sharing
with all of us) all she
has ever known from her life
experience to seek the source
of "GOOD" feelings!

She is very brave to trust & love her readers as
she endeavored to walk the walk and
talk the talk in front of all of us.

She invited us to feel and to think with her.
Her entire text seemed to be a giant
invitation to all of us to join her in her journey
to find "GOOD."

Is it there? Is she right to
try to find it? We can all look at ourselves
and find the answer to that...
for the most part
it is a resounding YES.
Thank you Dr. Pert!!
Keep up your super efforts.

1 out of 5 stars Read all about me, me, me...and then some! :-(.......2007-06-22

I was looking forward to reading this book, having seen Candace Pert in the Movie "What the Bleep!"

The book was recommended on the Hay House website and its title sounded alluring, promising all good stuff to make one feel good...or so I thought!

I found the style grating, nerve jangling, hurried, unfinished and self-indulgent, truly unbearable. I kept reading the book right to the end just to see, if there was a turnaround in the story, some evidence of this promise of 'Everything You Need to Know to Feel Good'. The book did not deliver its promise.

Candace seems to revel in the me, me, me-ness of how wonderful she is, how she just has to get her life sorted so she can finish this book, how she's being pushed by her friend and co-author Nancy Marriott to edit a chapter, finsish a chapter, have a hurried meeting here and there, jump on a plane, attend a conference, get on another plane, spill milkshake over some papers she's supposed to be editing for the book whilst she's on that plane going to another conference where she'll be surrounded by adoring fans who'll have to be kept at bay from her restaurant table whilst she edits another page or two or three of her wonderful book, while she's having a reunion meal with her daughter..., who's rushed over to see her...you get the picture?!*

I've read many self-help books and most of them - from Louise Hay to Esther Hicks and the wonderful Abraham - are motivated towards the reader and are compassionate and giving in their advice. But this book was about the author not the readers. It followed Candace as she gave papers, did book signings, met friends for coffee and flew on maany, many planes, talked incessantly about funding for her work which she got, them didn't get, then got becuase she knew someone who knew someone, but the research still didn't seem to be going the way she's planned and so she moves back to the book and then... all the time reminding us what great work she had done and how her audience simply love and adore her. Perhaps this is true - but this was not how the book advertised itself.

I was hoping for insight and sound advice - what I got was a self-absorbed and meandering disappointment.

I've written quite a few reviews on amazon and other sites - and again I was motivated to write this one to save other people from wasting money when there are so many gazillions of other books that offer so much more. Please, seriously don't waste your money on this book.

If you want to read about rushing all over the World, airplanes, fame and such, buy a fiction book which will be better value, more entetaining and you can share it with a friend after you have read it.

With Candace's book, I have to admit for the first time in my life I ripped the book up and put it in the recycle bin with the other scrap paper and carboard boxes...and you know what...

THAT made me feeeeeeeeeeeeel GOOD!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-13

After listening to an interview with Dr. Pert, I was curious to learn more about her research regarding molecules of emotion and bought this book. I'm sorry I did - the interview would have sufficed. I agree with the other one-star reviews - the book is mostly about Dr. Pert's personal/professional issues, and that is NOT why I bought this book. As a reader, I got the feeling the author didn't really want to write this book and was somehow trying to squeeze it into her hectic life. There are interviews with Dr. Pert you can listen to on the web (brainsync.com, hayhouseradio.com). I suggest you listen to them first before you buy this book.

1 out of 5 stars TMI.......2007-06-04

I was sincerely disappointed with this book. I agree 100% with the first reviewer with the constant repetition of the disappointment of the AIDS drug, name dropping, conversations with her co-writer etc.. Honestly, this book could have been boiled down to maybe 2-3 chapters of relevent and interesting information that could have been gleaned from a website. It was a waste of time and money (for hardcover)-it was poorly written it was more of a diary than an book written by a professional. It helped me know how not to present myself as a professional-sharing too much information is not professional! Although I have read Dr. Pert's first text and seen her present and she "was" very good. I state was because she may believe that "what the bleep" made her a household name as she attests to over and over again in this book- she is not and this book doesn't help at all to promote her mission.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for everyone.......2007-05-15

An absolutely amazing book that changed my life! Almost like a user manual for humans :) Very well written with a cool sense of humor... recommend highly!

3 out of 5 stars Good as readers go.......2007-03-13

This is a reader; brief articles taken from other sources, on the subject of the shadow. It is a good place to start if you are new to this subject, but it is by no means comprehensive. It is quite repetitive; almost every article/essay begins with the definition of the shadow, and several themes are continually restated throughout. As another reviewer said, the book is dated, what with mentions of US-Russian relations, but don't let that stop you; you need not read every article in order to benefit from the messages within. Instead, read articles selectively, according to your own personal needs.

If you are interested in the Jungian idea of The Shadow, this is a great read. Just look at the contributors- Robert Bly, Jung, Joseph Cambell, Ken Wilbur... these are big names by smart people.

We are using this book in a Shadow Work class, and everyone has truly enjoyed it. I think you would too.

5 out of 5 stars Shadow workbook?.......2006-08-20

I did not realize that this was a shadow workbook until after I had read quite a few chapters. It is an entertaining book to read, reminding me of Vincent Prices Theatre. As great as one story is the next one tops it. Zweig and Abrams have gathered a great collection of stories that will get you to open up your mind to receive something that was there all the time. 5 STARS!

3 out of 5 stars Enter the Shadow..........2004-09-02

The 65-article anthology "Meeting the Shadow" is a mixed bag, with some articles the equivilent of fluffinutor, and others with rich and deep meaning for those searching for knowledge. This book did make me reconsider how I project onto others. This is a good psychological read, but some of the information is quite dated, as some articles are relevent mainly to the Cold War(It was written in 1990, but some articles are from the '70s.).

5 out of 5 stars "No one knows what the shadow knows.".......2003-11-29

This collection of 65 essays from a wide array of Jungian practioners is designed to give us a window into the mysterious world that lives within each of us; the shadow.

Each of these essays, in their own unique ways, throws the lid off of our own personal "Pandora's box" and brings us face to face with the disowned and despised parts of who we are: sexual urges, rage, resentment, arrogance, greed, envy; the list is endless.

Jung was once quoted as saying "I would rather be whole than to be good." I did not understand this statement until I read this book. Now that I have begun my own "shadow work," the picture is becoming clearer, and clearer.

What is it about neuroscience that graces its practitioners with humility? Rodolfo Llinas of the NYU School of Medicine continues this tradition of quietly tackling the deepest issues in I of the Vortex. This exposition on the evolution and development of consciousness is accessible and intriguing enough to interest readers more philosophically than scientifically oriented. Grounded in research, the book posits our awareness as an artifact of the cortico-thalamic binding of perceptions and movements in synchrony; Llinas uses this theory as a launching pad for more far-reaching considerations of selfhood all the more relevant for their correlation with the facts.

Charmingly illustrated with artistic and scientific images cleverly supporting the arguments, the book is a quick if challenging read, and it explains all the scientific basics for those approaching from the humanities. Synthesizing evolution, philosophy, and neuroscience is becoming an increasingly popular endeavor for introspective eggheads, and we should be grateful: the question of consciousness affects us all and touches on every other field, from theology to particle physics. I of the Vortex is a welcome contribution to the theory of mind and essential reading for the introspective. --Rob Lightner

Book Description

In I of the Vortex, Rodolfo Llinas, a founding father of modern brain science, presents an original view of the evolution and nature of mind. According to Llinas, the "mindness state" evolved to allow predictive interactions between mobile creatures and their environment. He illustrates the early evolution of mind through a primitive animal called the "sea squirt." The mobile larval form has a brainlike ganglion that receives sensory information about the surrounding environment. As an adult, the sea squirt attaches itself to a stationary object and then digests most of its own brain. This suggests that the nervous system evolved to allow active movement in animals. To move through the environment safely, a creature must anticipate the outcome of each movement on the basis of incoming sensory data. Thus the capacity to predict is most likely the ultimate brain function. One could even say that Self is the centralization of prediction.

At the heart of Llinas's theory is the concept of oscillation. Many neurons possess electrical activity, manifested as oscillating variations in the minute voltages across the cell membrane. On the crests of these oscillations occur larger electrical events that are the basis for neuron-to-neuron communication. Like cicadas chirping in unison, a group of neurons oscillating in phase can resonate with a distant group of neurons. This simultaneity of neuronal activity is the neurobiological root of cognition. Although the internal state that we call the mind is guided by the senses, it is also generated by the oscillations within the brain. Thus, in a certain sense, one could say that reality is not all "out there," but is a kind of virtual reality.

5 out of 5 stars Thinking as an internalized movement!.......2007-06-24

Jorge Borges wrote, "I am not sure that I exist, actually. I am all the writers that I have read, all the people that I have met, all the women that I have loved; all the cities that I have visited, all my ancestors... Perhaps I would have liked to be my father, who wrote but has the decency of not publishing".
In the book "I of the vortex" Rodolfo Llinas gives another perspective on who am "I" and where "I" comes from, looking into the deep and dark recesses of the brain as a neuroscientist and physician, leaving God out from the game, unlike his maestro John Eccles, a dedicated theist, who wrote that "there is a Divine Providence operating over and above the materialistic happenings of biological evolution".
The ultimate thesis Llinas nominates is: "thinking is an internalized movement". He makes his point very clearly, based on his extensive knowledge and experience both as a scientist and writer. Perhaps thinking is an internalized movement? Perhaps not! The book "I of the vortex" is the ultimate read for those who ask Questions. An excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars Readable and wide-ranging, but all from just one theoretical perspective.......2006-10-23

What is the "self" in neural terms? Few would be bold enough to claim an answer to that question. Yet in "I of the Vortex: From Neurons to Self," Rodolfo Llinas sketches a very compelling picture of how the self, consciousness, and intelligence may arise in the brain.

Essentially, Llinas's argument goes as follows. First, brains are really only found in animals that move (so, obviously, plants do not have brains). In fact, at least one animal - the sea squirt - actually devours its own brain once it no longer needs to move. Although simple movements might be caused by oscillatory pattern generators in the spinal cord, the brain is necessary for more complex, sensory-guided movement. Why should this be so?

The answer Llinas provides is prediction, or in other words, a sensorimotor internal model of the world based on "dt lookahead" functions, interfacing the motor and sensory systems. Synchronized oscillations from the cerebellum (Llinas's area of expertise) carry out the motor-side of this computation, giving rise to the characteristic 8-12 Hz periodicity of the neural signals that command voluntary movements. At a higher frequency (40 Hz), other neuronal oscillations throughout the thalamocortical system serve to bind sensory representations together. And the subjective, cognitive correlate of the intersection of these oscillations is no less than the self: "this temporally coherent event that binds, in the time domain, the fractured components of external and internal reality into a single construct is what we call the 'self.'"

But wait, doesn't that mean that all animals have a sense of "self"- even the lowly sea squirt (at least before it eats its brain)? It would seem so. But that's not the end of Llinas's more controversial claims. Llinas also suggests that neural networks explain "very little concerning the actual functioning of the nervous system itself," advocating instead the idea that most of our cognitive abilities are genetically prewired at birth. Along these lines, Llinas endorses Chomsky's idea that genes may to a large extent determine language, and furthermore that language exists in many species besides homo sapiens.

It is here that "I of the Vortex" starts to seem more like a manifesto than a careful scientific analysis. For example, after introducing the basics of neurophysiology and comparative neurology in the first half of the book, Llinas skips the cognitive level of analysis almost altogether and starts extrapolating directly to issues of consciousness, awareness, and selfhood. This bias against direct investigations of cognition (something arguably very important for understanding consciousness) is nowhere more apparent than when he refers to cognitive neuroscience as "neophrenology." But without this important middle-level of analysis, Llinas is mostly shooting from the hip in the second half of the book - and aiming for concepts that are simply too far removed from Llinas's expertise in cellular neurophysiology.

On the whole, Llinas has done an admirable job of outlining one particular view of how neuronal dynamics may give rise to consciousness in an embodied cognition framework. In this sense, "I of the Vortex" makes an excellent companion to other high-level introductions to cognitive neuroscience.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Neuroscience synthesis!.......2005-08-14

The book presents an amazing Neuroscience synthesis that covers all the aspects: from ions to synergistic systems. It gives a thought-provoking explanation of the origin of the brain through evolution. It also explains the concepts of 'qualias' and 'fixed action patterns' in such an integrative manner and concludes that everything was perfectly made to synergistically create our predictive brains.

5 out of 5 stars read it........2004-09-07

If you are going to read one book about neuroscience, consciousness, or the meaning of life, this should be it. Dr. Llinas has made some unusually innovative and profound assertions about how the self ("soul") might be generated from the mechanical workings of the brain. While the answer to the hard problem of consciousness remains elusive, I can honestly say after having read many books on the subject, that this is as close as it gets.

5 out of 5 stars Very worthwhile.......2002-05-20

The author presents quite a plausible theory of mind, based on his work as a neuroscientist. I suspect Llinas is very much on the right track to illuminating the physical basis of consciousness.

Building chapter-by-chapter simultaneously on the apparent evolutionary development from the simplest neuronal system to the centralized brain, and on the results of brain scans and other experiments, Llinas brings us calmly and reasonably to the resultant human mind of today.

For Llinas, consciousness is the synchronized 40Hz firing of regions of the cortex over time. That is, consciousness is not just a given pattern of firing in 3-space, but is a 4-space relation. That additional dimension of time multiplies enormously the potential number of brain patterns that could occur in an individual. But it also makes the topic that much harder to study.

The writing feels like it has been written by someone who knows alot: there are many points where conceptual connections are not made entirely explicit (because it probably seemed so self-evident to Llinas) and the reader must fill in those gaps. Also, some of his non-neurologic language is quite technical: the description of the "self" as a calculated eigenvector, or the "vortex" which is essentially an attractor (as known in mathematics), that can make Llinas sound like a cold, hard-nosed scientist.

However, Llinas is refreshingly 'human'. For him, it is quite reasonable to assume (as a common consequence of evolution and similarity of brain structure) that many other species have forms of consciousness. Indeed, he devotes an entire chapter to qualia, and contends that qualia exist as essential brain feature, not only for humans but for cats and dogs and most other animals with brains of the same evolutionary genre (and that even in the case of invertebrate (octopus) brains he argues that the burden of proof is on those who would deny qualia).

One caveat: be aware that Llinas does not explicitly delineate between accepted facts and his theory - the book flows as one whole. It is not intented as deception. As he says in the preface "This book presents a personal view of neuroscience...".

Book Description

"Just who is Ken Wilber?" For more than 30 years, a rising tide of readers enthralled by this visionary philosopher's map of human potential have asked this question about the famously "low profile" author. Finally, early this year, Wilber—the author of A Brief History of Everything and Grace and Grit—agreed to create a series of in-depth dialogues on audio for the first time ever. The result is Kosmic Consciousness: a landmark recording that invites us to experience a full-length audio learning course with this celebrated thinker.

Listeners will be surprised and delighted to discover the Ken Wilber behind the writer's pen—spontaneous, irreverent, and incredibly passionate about how each of us can participate in the unfolding of human consciousness. Through over 12 hours of revelatory insights, Kosmic Consciousness explores: The integral map of the Kosmos (the universe that includes the physical cosmos as well as the realms of consciousness and Spirit), the pursuit of the Good, the True, and the Beautiful, discovering your "multiple intelligences", using altered states, male and female sexuality, how meditation accelerates personal growth, prayer, does it work?, integral perspectives on individuals spanning Jung to Piaget, Baryshnikov to Nietzsche, Jesus to the Buddha, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars ken wilber live gives another dimension.......2007-08-23

Ken Wilber is the "useful philosopher" of the 20th/21st century. This is a marvelous and extensive interview, and Ken Wilber live adds another dimension to understanding his quite remarkable contributions. His map of the whole integral process is very understandable in this dialogue. His humility and brilliance really shine through and give the listener a very human personality to interface with the sometimes dense and difficult parts of his many books. Buy this series of CD's, it is money very, very well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Great material.......2007-06-27

These CDs are wonderful. They have provided me with a greater understanding of Wilber's work

5 out of 5 stars Best introduction to Wilber (review by integral coach, meditation teacher).......2007-04-14

This is the best overall introduction to Wilber for anyone. Among other things, it brings in Ken Wilber's personality, vocal inflections and follows a structure created by a live interview. Ken can often be repititious and ramble in his writing. Here the interviewer keeps him on track and in speaking his theories really come alive in way that is easier for most people to grasp than much of his writing. I also think this is as bargain price for what you get!

For those who are skeptical of audio materials, I would recommend A Brief History of Everything as the best in-depth introduction to Wilber. I don't think a "Theory of Everything" is meaty enough and it just skims the surface. The former book is organized like an interview and the writing is humorous as well as informative.

Another book you may want to consider if you are already well read in Wilber is Ken Wilber: Thought As Passion (Suny Series in Transpersonal and Humanistic Pyschology) This contextualizes Ken Wilber's writing, gives you a sense of the man behind the ideas and presents some critique of his thought and approach. This is also a five star product.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging and Friendly.......2007-03-28

I think this dialogue is engaging, friendly and clear enough. It is a very convenient way to be introduced to the brilliance of Ken Wilber's theories.
Definitely worth for the price offered :-).

5 out of 5 stars Great way to get Wilber.......2006-08-10

There is a lot of great work out there regarding integral theory. Ken Wilber has been instrumental in bringing it all together. His different books reflect the evolution of his theories. Many are very dense and a lot of folks give up. I find that when Ken talks about integral theory, I get it a lot easier than from reading him. These discs are a series of structured interviews that lead you step by step through his map of integral theory. Work with this and his next greatest work, Sex, Ecology and Spirituality flows a lot easier. Also his latest book on Integral Spirituality will sink in a lot easier. This is a must have if you want to really get integral theory and certainly if you want to understand Wilber. As an integral coach, this work is the foundation for my training lineage.

Book Description

The exploration into the truth of man's activities is unique, intriguing, and provocative. From a new perspective, one quickly grasps the levels of truth expressed by the media, the arts, writers, painters, architecture, movies, TV, politics, and war, as well as academia and the greatest thinkers and philosophies through the ages and up to present-day science and advanced theories of the nature of the universe. Most importantly, the ego and its structure are revealed to facilitate the understanding of religious and spiritual truths expressed by the mystics and enlightened sages over the centuries. It becomes apparent why the human mind, unaided, has been intrinsically incapable of discerning truth from falsehood. A simple test is described that, in seconds, can solve riddles that have been irresolvable by mankind for centuries. This book delivers far more than it promises.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking work. .......2007-08-27

This is the work of an extremely rare writer, scholar and soul on the earth. Many of the calibrations had me thinking about my own opinions at first read. I felt like I didn't agree with them or how could that be? But after some further thought, I began to understand some of the more surprising calibrations. It also did bring about a better understanding of my own intentions and the truths by which I live and others live as well...Everyone should take heed of all of Dr. Hawkins work for he uniquely resonates to me and I know many, as a rare soul who just IS-living the truth and not someone who KNOWS of it and is preaching it, but has yet to get there in truth themselves....

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment and Outrage.......2007-08-23

I was enough impressed with Hawkins' Power vs Force and his The Eye of the I to begin using his technique myself as a non scientist. I gave Power vs Force to several friends. Fortunately I came upon Michael B's review which confirmed some of my experience in trying to use the device as well as disabusing me of much of my enthusiasm for Hawkins as a scientist. I am disappointed and outraged at the writer's ill disguised political bias in Truth vs Falsehood: How to Tell the Difference!

2 out of 5 stars Truth vs Falsehood.......2007-07-12

I was a bit dissappointed with the contents of this book. I am a big believer in muscle (or kinesthetic) testing. But this book appeared to have more opinion than actuality. If you are purchasing the book out of curiousity about how the Hawkins researchers calibrate current events, this book is great. However, I think the claim of "Falsehood" in the title is not a valid position.

5 out of 5 stars Compassion.......2007-06-27

In this book, David Hawkins gives us a look at this world through his steady and compassionate eyes.

Despite what a reader might project onto it, this book is not intended to be political, nor is it a make-wrong of those who see the world differently. Nor is this book going to be useful for those who hold their maps of reality as sacrosanct.

It is a book for those want to understand the world rather than judge it. It is a means to see the world in a Socratic way, rather than through the victim-perpetrator lens that is common in today's media and culture. But to see with compassion first requires seeing with clarity. Neither denial nor blame yield freedom. A possible result of reading this book is to become more able to love the world just as it is--to develop a greater capacity to just be oneself in it without placing conditions on it to conform to one's opinion of how it should be. That is freedom and it's available now.

One caveat about this book--to be understood it actually must be read. The charts in the book are compelling and interesting, surprising and for many, controversial, but anyone who reviewed this book without actually reading it--all of it--does himself and his readers a disservice.

1 out of 5 stars Dangerous Stuff.......2007-06-03

After having personally experienced using Dr. Hawkins technique of applied kinesiology for myself, I have an obligation before God to warn people of the evils of his material, particularly his use of kinesiology for determining levels of human consciousness and truth for which it is not intended. I understand we all have a desire to know the truth and get closer to God, and his technique sounds tempting because of it's simplistic nature, but as I know from first-hand experience, this is NOT the way.

I initially tested his technique using foods and unfortunately for me it had appeared to work which is what prompted me to get sucked into his whole system of consciousness research without really looking into the authenticity of the technique. I started calibrating people and objects and it appeared to work for me, giving the appearance that the calibrated level generally matched the person's behavior. It wasn't until later I realized that I was actually channeling spirits that caused me to go strong or weak, and that they eventually tried to manipulate and fool me into thinking I had past lives, that I was one with God, that I was becoming enlightened, and that I was even being tempted by Satan at various times. I even felt the so-called kundalini energy he talks about in his audio programs. I eventually ended up in a psych ward for a number of weeks because of the supernatural events I was experiencing. It wasn't until I prayed in the name of Jesus Christ that the spirits left my body. Even now I'm still dealing with residual effects of some evil entity haunting me. Now I know Dr. Hawkins' claim of everything happening "spontaneously" for him is due to total possession, not due to the effect of the "field of consciousness" he proclaims is directing him.

I strongly urge people to stay away from this material, paricularly using the technique of applied kinesiology he describes in his materials. Kinesiology is not a proven science as shown by double-blind studies referenced in Wikipedia (which is what I should have looked into before I got so deeply involved) and in my opinion, the technique amounts to using a ouija board. Things may appear benevolent at first but will only get worse with time. In Duetoronomy 18:9-12 God's Word strictly forbids using techniques like this for divination. 1 John 4:1-4 says to test the spirits if they are from God or not. I strongly recommend that anyone getting caught in his belief system confess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour and ask God in his name to save them from harassment of evil spirits. There are a number of websites that link applied kinesiology with the occult.

Dr. Hawkins may have an advanced understanding of human behaviour due to his intelligence and education which gives him the appearance of being a leading authority figure in understanding human consciousness, but his claims of utilizing applied kinesiology to determine a person's level of consciousness and to discern truth vs falsehood is an unsound intuitive leap of logic which at it's worst is spiritually unsafe. I strongly recommend against this book and his other works.
