Change can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. The message of Who Moved My Cheese? is that all can come to see it as a blessing, if they understand the nature of cheese and the role it plays in their lives. Who Moved My Cheese? is a parable that takes place in a maze. Four beings live in that maze: Sniff and Scurry are mice--nonanalytical and nonjudgmental, they just want cheese and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Hem and Haw are "littlepeople," mouse-size humans who have an entirely different relationship with cheese. It's not just sustenance to them; it's their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they've found. Most of us reading the story will see the cheese as something related to our livelihoods--our jobs, our career paths, the industries we work in--although it can stand for anything, from health to relationships. The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese, and be prepared to go running off in search of new sources of cheese when the cheese we have runs out.

Dr. Johnson, coauthor of The One Minute Manager and many other books, presents this parable to business, church groups, schools, military organizations--anyplace where you find people who may fear or resist change. And although more analytical and skeptical readers may find the tale a little too simplistic, its beauty is that it sums up all natural history in just 94 pages: Things change. They always have changed and always will change. And while there's no single way to deal with change, the consequence of pretending change won't happen is always the same: The cheese runs out. --Lou Schuler

3 out of 5 stars Simplified change.......2007-10-15

Got an hour to fill? That's how long it'll take to read. As many have stated, company heads and consultant groups hand this book out to employees when there are about to be changes in the company. Basically, this is a very simplified parable on four different takes on how to deal with change. Of course at the end you are supposed to decide which of the characters you currently are. Sniff - you actively move about seeking change. Scurry - you move about and quickly adapt to the change to make things happen. And then there's Hem and Haw. Both resist change and stick to the old expecting it to return to the promised treasures. Eventually Haw decides that staying in one place with no rewards is not progressing so opts to go seek change on his struggling legs. The Hem remains obstinant and refuses to change and his fate fades away. Of course no one wants to claim they are Hem but most people are. One of my favorite bits in the book is the statement along the lines of "If you can't change, you may become extinct."

Overall this is a very simple take on how people can adapt to change in their personal and professional lives. Seems quite similar on how to change your personal attitude and outlook that is presented in Benjamin Hoff's "Tao of Pooh". If you're in a company that is about to use outside consulting, expect to get 'homework' to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-10-15

This is a fantastic book about reassessing your life and career. I've given it to friends after reading it myself.

3 out of 5 stars It's an OK book.......2007-10-04

Just like most of the people, I got this book from my employer (I hope it's not a sign of restructuring :)).
I'm afraid that I do a too good job of reviewing the book one would no longer need to buy it anymore. In essence, the whole book can be summarized in about 10 statements. In all fairness though, these are insightful and worth meditating on statements.
So, like I said... An OK book.

3 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2007-10-03

The book is an easy and quick read but the story will put thoughts in your head that you will think about for years if not a lifetime. Life brings us all challenges so this book is for all of us... That is, unless your life is perfect.

1 out of 5 stars Genuinely Insulting..........2007-09-29

Genuinely insulting to the independent thinker. Yeah I know, it's been said countless times but I felt the need to reinforce that notion. If you're someone that's more comfortable being a follower and having your life and work environment structured for you then you're more likely to enjoy this book and find something meaningful in it. If you're someone that uses logic and reason to guide your decisions then don't waste your time or money on this rehashed brainwashing manual. This is a book written for unquestioning, mindless followers, not a book for leaders. But a tool that leaders would use to try and control their subordinates.

When doctor and author Rachel Naomi Remen (Kitchen Table Wisdom) was young, she was caught between two different views of life: that of her rabbi grandfather and that of her highly academic, research-oriented parents, who believed religion was the opiate of the masses. As Remen gravitated toward academics and serving the world as a medical doctor, her grandfather became an "island of mysticism in a vast sea of science." But over time, Remen discovered that two seemingly divergent paths could lead to the same destination, especially as she learned to blend her spiritual beliefs with her medical treatment.

Remen uses the heart-rending stories of her patients to teach readers how to follow in her example, that is, combining a life of service with a life of receiving and giving blessings (a combination that avoids common problems such as burnout, self-sacrifice, and navel gazing). Remen also includes personal stories of her grandfather, who showered the world with his mystical beliefs and wizened blessings. While this story-by-story structure is similar to the bestselling Kitchen Table Wisdom, it is still a tearful and satisfying formula. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

As a small child, Rachel Remen sat at the feet of her grandfather, an orthodox rabbi and scholar of the kabbalah, and learned the secret of life: that love and blessings given to others heals our loneliness, unhappiness, and in fact all our wounds. Remen uses her power as a master storyteller to bring to life the extraordinary blessings of ordinary existence. These exquisite pieces show us how we bless and serve each other most often without knowing it, how much life gives to us, and how many of our own blessings we have still yet to receive.

There is nothing more comforting than hearing Rachel's grandfather speak of love, life, and God to a small, lonely, and very spiritual child who was trying to find her way in an unspiritual world. These are stories for keeping at the bedside, for those dark nights when we go out in search of our souls.

Rachel's grandfather has blessed not only his beloved granddaughter but, through her, has blessed us all.

4 out of 5 stars A Blessing In Itself.......2007-07-22

I feel bad. Apparently, I'm only the 6th person out of 47 people to give this book anything less than a 5-star rating. And there's only one reason I did that. As a writer myself, I feel that there are too many stories in this book. Some of these little narratives just aren't as powerful or focused as others. And I would have left them out. But please don't let that get in the way of your enjoyment of this wonderful work. It is every bit as inspiring, uplifting, and profound as most of the other reviewers say it is. I especially like the common theme I see running through most of the pieces presented here. And that's the idea that the wholeness of an individual not only includes his or her health, talents and accomplishments, but his or her pain, suffering, shortcomings, and illnesses, too. In life we are called to embrace it all, and resist nothing. And that is the key to a life that is truly fulfilling and rewarding.

Steven Lane Taylor, author of Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide For Living Life In The Divine Flow

5 out of 5 stars One not to be missed.......2007-05-19

I have found My Grandfather's Blessings to be among the most moving books I have ever read. Each brief story can stand on its own. The author relates a simple incident, as many of us have lived, but then goes on in a simple and succinct manner to reveal a deeper meaning within the experience. Ms. Remen does not talk down to the reader, but rather sweeps us up into the experience with her. Upon finishing this book, I immediately ordered five more and sent them out to friends.

Readers may well find themselves looking nervously over their shoulders after finishing this memoir by Candice DeLong, who met a lot of Hannibal Lecter's soul mates during her 20 years as an FBI agent. An early practitioner of profiling, the analysis of crime data for what it reveals about the perpetrator, DeLong handled such ugly cases that she and her partner at one point were known as "the Gruesome Twosome." Her arrests included child molesters, rapists, and serial killers; among the book's useful features are her tips on what to do if you or your child is attacked. (Yell "Fire!" rather than "Help!" she advises; it attracts more attention.) Not that human nature's darker side was a surprise to DeLong, who came to the FBI from a job as head nurse in a maximum security psychiatric ward, where a violent paranoid schizophrenic crooned at her, "You better pray I never get out of these [restraints]. I could cut your head off. Or do you want me to tear your heart out?" The frank, conversational text ably captures the forceful personality of a female pioneer. The bureau had only been accepting women for eight years when DeLong joined in 1980, and her training at Quantico included brutal harassment by instructors determined to "wash out" any female applicant. Yet she had the toughness to survive and the good sense to know when to ignore her male colleagues' barbed jokes and when to kid them right back. Ultimately, she made friends and got ahead. As well as chronicling a stream of fascinating (and often deeply disturbing) high-profile cases such as the Unabomber, DeLong's narrative portrays a changing FBI, now valuing the special perspective contributed by female and African American agents it once scorned. --Wendy Smith

Book Description

Candice DeLong has been called a real-life Clarice Starling and a female Donnie Brasco. She has been on the front lines of some of the FBIs most gripping and memorable cases, including being chosen as one of the three agents to carry out the manhunt for the Unabomber in Lincoln, Montana. She has tailed terrorists, gone undercover as a gangsters moll, and posed as the madam for a call-girl ring. Now for the first time she reveals the dangers and rewards of being a woman on the front lines of the worlds most powerful law enforcement agency. She traces the unusual career path that led her to crime fighting, and recounts the incredible obstacles she faced as a woman and as a fledgling agent. She takes readers step by step through the profiling process and shows how she helped solve a number of incredible cases. The story of her role as a lead investigator on the notorious Tylenol Murderer case is particularly compelling. Finally, she gives the true, insiders story behind the investigation that led to the arrest of the Unabomberincluding information that the media cant or wont reveal. A remarkable portrait of courage and grace under fire, Special Agent offers a missing chapter to the annals of law enforcement and a dramatic and often funny portrait of an extraordinary woman who has dedicated her heart and soul to the crusade against crime.Candice DeLongs Top Cases: 1. 5 out of 5 stars Solid story-telling with humor.......2007-05-12

This isn't the best book I've ever read but it's a fun and interesting read about her career in the FBI. She wisely chose stories from her career (which must have been difficult with so many years of experience) and always included down-to-earth humor and humility when appropriate. When she entered, the FBI was still adjusting to having women agents but she remained strong, taking the high road on many occasions when she was not treated fairly. As a result, her career flourished and her life is a story worth hearing. She is truly a trailblazer. Just nobody call her Candy.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money unless you want pure fiction.......2005-10-15

This book should be listed under "fiction," because that's what it is. Ms. DeLong is a legend in her mind and her mind only. Anyone who reads this and believes Ms. DeLong actually did the things she claimed to do is living in a dream, just like Ms. DeLong. Don't waste your money. Ms. DeLong is as much a real life Clarice Starling as Barney Fife is Elliot Ness. I would recommend the book if you are looking for a good laugh. I rated this garbage one star because I wasn't given the choice of zero or negative stars.

3 out of 5 stars It Takes a Woman to do a Man's Job!.......2005-05-15

This was an interesting book about Candice Delong written by Elisa Petrini. Before becoming connected with the FBI, she'd been a nurse in a psychiatric ward. She was a divorced mother then, still something of a stigma in the early 1980s. In the late '80s she was assigned to the cocaine trafficing in Chicago.

There was a drug pipeline which stretched from the South American country of Columbia, then the cocaine capital of the hemisphere, up through Mexico into Texas; from there to Chicago. I've been told that it went through Lawrenceburg, TN on the way North.

There is a manadatory minimum 20-yr. sentence for anyone caught with ten or more kilograms of cocaine (about 22 lbs.). Each kilo is the size of a brick and worth $15,000 - 30,000 depending on the quality of the drug. Heroin is a lot more. She had some interesting times working with DEA in narcotics, even being tricked into babysitting for the informant on her first case.

She was involved in the Unabomber case and the way they discovered it was a former University of California at Berkley (where Savage (Weiner) may have found his cocaine) professor. She was in on the specifics in Montana, trapping Ted Kaezynski in 1996. Then back to San Francisco, where Savage settled.

She gives good pointers on how to handle home invastion or sexual assault. Always yell "Fire." There are almost twice as many sex crimes against women over sixty as certain killers go after the older women to act out their anger toward the strong female figures in their lives and the fact that elderly women are easier to control. Compliance is by no means the same as consent.

Rape is all about power, not sex. A woman's goal is to survive the attack. About 41% of rapes and sex assaults are committed by acquaintances of the victim. Sex offenders don't think like normal men and are always on the alert for what they think of as "provacative" behavior or dress.

After twenty years, she became a private citizen again and went on the lecture circuit. She is proud of her achievements and the privilege to work as a 'public servant' in the FBI.

5 out of 5 stars Candice gives as good as she gets!.......2003-12-23

What an excellent read! The characters and relationships are very intriguing-the author's world is filled with both obvious and subtle villains, as well as obvious and subtle heroes. Candice herself is fun, likeable and strong enough to give as good as she gets. Though she is being constantly second-guessed, undermined and underestimated, she ends up turning her "weakness" into advantage time and again. The author sets up the rivalry between the FBI and the DEA and her unique role walking between the two. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible profile of dedication and compassion.......2003-10-09

Candice Delong tells it like it is. This book held me riveted and page turning. I could not put it down. Ms. Delong exemplifies a woman who is dedicated to justice and the right thing to do. At great personal expense Delong did her job. However, as a mother, she had her priorities clearly defined. Delong's son was her greatest priority. The part about the Unibomber wearing her son's coat touched me deeply. This lady is indeed a national hero. In all the turmoil that America is involved in, it is wonderful to read about a woman who has made a difference in so many lives. Courage, integrity, and ethics all apply to this amazing woman.

In an age of instant gratification and information overload, Tommy Tenney emphasizes that "we like things to come quickly, easily, and cheaply--microwave revival." The God Chasers seeks to reach those who hunger for God's manifest presence and whose endurance to boldly pursue Him will lead to heartfelt revival in America's churches. Tenney, a self-proclaimed God chaser, has preached since he was 16 and has toured in a mobile ministry for over 17 years in 30-plus states. Through personal accounts of the miraculous, Tenney insists that humility before and intimacy with God are the secret facets to apprehending more of God's glory. While the conservative may argue that God cannot be forced into a linear timeline, Tenney desires to "have God show up" in order to reveal new revelations so that we may be saturated with His presence, arguing that experience supercedes doctrine. If catching God is an impossible act, Tenney's passionate heart reveals that being caught by God is the hope--"you're chasing the impossible, knowing it's possible...the pursuer becomes the pursued." Tenney's writing is sure to birth a new generation of God chasers, anxious to be caught by God Himself. --Jill Heatherly

Book Description

There are those so hungry, so deperate for His Presence, that they become consumed with finding Him. Their longing for Him moves them to do what they would otherwise never do: Chase God. But what does it really mean to chase God? Can He be "caught?" Is there an end to the thirsting of man's soul for Him? Meet Tommy Tenney--God chaser. Join him in his search for God. Follow him as he ignores the maze of religious tradition and finds himself, not chasing God, but to his utter amazement, caught by the One he had chased.

5 out of 5 stars Revival Begins When We Hunger For Him.......2007-07-15

I read this book after a friend of mine told me about how it had changed her life. And now I understand why!

A lot of people may disagree with Tommy Tenney's writing style, claims, or beliefs, simply because they have not tasted the glory of God for themselves. Unlike what many of the negative reviewers have posted, Tenney's not out to deify or exalt man: rather, as he puts it, human flesh must die (i.e. our own agendas, preferences, etc.) before the glory of God comes down. I would imagine that many of these nay-sayers would quote Luke 9:23, but that is what Tenney does--ignoring the semantics. Every one of us would agree that God does NOT abide where sin dwells. He is a holy God.

Tenney doesn't preach a "feel good" message at all. He preaches brokenness, repentance, humility, and true pursuit of a God who loves us, that we may catch Him. Yes, God does dwell in us when we are born again, but the challenge is to come out of spiritual complacency and pursue God with all we have, at any cost. When I think of chasing God, I am reminded of scriptures like Matthew 6:33 ("Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness . . . ") and Isaiah 55:6 ("Seek the LORD while He may be found, call on Him while He is near . . ."). Tenney's invitation is to draw ever nearer to a God who will occasionally remind us that we are still dealing with our own sin while we seek His glory--because He loves us.

Some may be taken aback by Tenney's critique of "dead" churches which elevate theology over God. Yes, it is good to have a theological system. I have benefited much from studying Calvinism and other systematic theologies in the past. And of course, we should never abandon the Word of God, rightly applied (see 2 Timothy 2:15). However, we should pursue God, not based on theological systems, but on a personal relationship. It is almost like having a human relationship: I could know so much about a person without truly being invited to know his or her heart. It is the same--though on a completely different level!--with God. He invites us not to study about Him, but to know Him. The Bible and theology must point us to God and to pursue HIM, not a theological system!

In short, a great book! A real eye opener, and a blessing.

4 out of 5 stars Perfectly Describes What Is Missing In Christians And The Church Today!.......2007-03-23

I agree with his statement "there is as much of God in most bars as there is in most churches". Most church services are all about pleasing man,not God,today. The first chapter has a "bowl you over" example of what church would and should be like if God was truly present in your service, and also shows how it is God who brings revival, not man's planned program and advertising. It is also God who brings the people in. Every pastor needs to read this book!

I could not give it 5 stars because I do not agree with a few things. The woman with the Alabaster box who annoited Jesus and washed His feet with her hair is never identified in scripture, period, certainly not as Mary Magdalene, nor are her sins, and Mary Magdalene was delivered of 7 demons, nowhere in scripture,is it ever said that she was a prostitute(as he claims)! (another gripe I have about the Passion film)

I also have to wonder if his church is claiming city blocks for God,then why is America getting worse, everyday, instead of better, unless this is not God's will?

I do agree with the author's view on how a Christian who truly wants the kind of relationship with God that is possible, and what He desires from us, we must be willing to deny "self". Very inspiring for your Christian walk,if your heart truly desires for you to climb into your heavenly father's lap.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-12-19

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who is hungry for something more than the usual "church fare".

5 out of 5 stars Hunger.......2006-11-15

This is a book you should read when you get tired of fooling around and you have a hunger for God so insatiable that it drives you crazy. If you want to be a true christian here's how. It's not going to be easy but it will be worth it in the end I promise.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ BOOK.......2006-10-07

I bought & read this book & totally loved it. It really has you wanting to be closer to God. Tommy Tenney is an amazing author & spiritual man.

Within the first week of starting my new job at a startup internet company, I came across this book and it made all the difference. Working at a startup can often be disjointed, especially since we didn't have an office to call our own. By incorporating some of the advice in my weekly routines, I created a structure for myself that I continue to follow. The advice was clear, concise and right on.

This is definitely a must-read for anyone starting a new job.

5 out of 5 stars Another 5-star review from SF, jeffnc!.......2007-07-03

Pay no attention to Jeffnc, the bitter reviewer from SC! I live in SF and have no idea who the Sidells are, but this book is fascinating! Follow everything they say week by week,a nd you'll get that "This is going very well" at your 90-day review just like me! What's more, you look not only super organized with this book on your desk, but also super-conscientious....I brought this book into a one on one with the boss, and I cracked the book and said "I'd like to talk about my career goals.." she asked me what the book was...she was impressed!

4 out of 5 stars A Great Resource/Tool.......2007-04-10

"Sink or Swim" is the book that I wish I had when I started in the working world over 18 years ago! It is a simple, step-by-step tool that shows new hires how to "get it right in 12 weeks". The week-by-week approach gives individuals the opportunity to set good habits and strategies that can be applied throughout one's career. This book has been very helpful to me as an HR professional in getting my recent college graduate new hires to better engage with the company and job they accepted within it! I would highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-12-20

Be knowledgeable about your industry. Be knowledgable about your company. Be knowledgeable about your required job skills. Communicate well with people. Set goals for yourself. Dress like others around you dress. Pretty common sense stuff.

By the way, check out some of the other reviews. It's pretty unusual for any book, especially a one like this, to get all 5 star reviews. Look at the earliest 8 reviews. This is the only review that has been written by each of these 8 reviewers. All written on May 8. Almost all from San Francisco/California (interesting that the company founded by the authors is in San Francisco.) A bunch of people from San Francisco just happened to swarm to Amazon on May 8 to give the book a bunch of 5 star reviews. Interesting.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide that Came in Handy.......2006-09-25

Let me begin by saying that I started a new job, and before the transition, I bought four books on this same topic. I hoped that between all of them, I would learn everything necessary for my first 3 months at my new job.

After having read all of them, I came to the conclusion that I would have saved some money had I only purchased Sink or Swim. It was by far the most comprehensive, week by week guide about how to start a new job and successfully chart your path within the first three months of your new job.

Some of the sage advice includes simple matters like knowing the right time to speak to your boss, the types of conversations you want to have when first being introduced to your new colleagues. Some of the best advice comes in the form of advice for the reader that helps them present the best possible image to others.

Readable, engaging and formatted in a clear reference style, I highly recommend this for anyone who is starting a new job, or for anyone who wants to start their old job, anew.

Book Description

Stephen Baldwin explains why he compares his new life of faith to jumping out of an airplane without a parachute, and calls on you to take the plunge. When Stephen Baldwin was riding the wave of fame from his most successful movie, The Usual Suspects, he thought he was in his glory. Hot in Hollywood--whatever Stephen wanted, Stephen got. Years later, happily married and living his life far from Hollywood, Stephen happened upon Christianity via a most unusual conversion. Now Stephen takes us behind the scenes and tells the stories we've yet to hear--of celebrity fun, curious family, and hardcore faith. He takes an in-depth look at the church's current role in society and the extreme faith movement. It's obvious Stephen has identified his new role in life--that of a Christian--a role more radical than anything in Hollywood.

I couldn't put this book down! Steven Baldwin is funny, humble, real, inspiring and contagious concerning his faith! I will recommend this to everyone!

4 out of 5 stars typical.......2007-09-25

I started this book with an intense curiosity to see just what type of faith this man would be talking about. Certainly we can see that Mr. Baldwin is living a much better life since he adopted Christianity! There is no doubt about that.

But where he falls short is when he starts trying to preach and convert others. His claim that only his God is the right one, and his belief in a literal interpretation of the Bible point to the fact that he can only address the lower ends of the belief spectrum: the Stage ones (see my blog: BeliefStagesandGrowth.com for explanation) who are as yet totally unprincipled and need to adopt that type of religion to make their lives work and the Stage Twos who have already adopted his same type of Christianity and are happy to find their own beliefs substantiated by his.

Certainly, Mr. Baldwin's ministry is of great benefit to the Stage Ones of the world. I wish him much luck in converting all of them! But I do wish there were more understanding in the world that other forms of belief (including that held by many more advanced Christians - Stage Fours) that hold validity as well. Mr. Baldwin makes the mistake of assuming all the world either follows his religion, (called Stage twos on my blog: BeliefStagesandGrowth.com) or lives a totally unprincipled life filled with the chaos of his own pre-Christian experience. (called Stage one on my blog) He seems to try to refute the objections some of the upper level believers might offer (i.e. a God of love would never send anyone to hell,) but he does so in a typically Stage two way - with short, pat answers that come from the bible and are based simply on blind faith.

The only trouble with promoting this simplistic belief system as being the final word is that it discourages the possiblity of questioning and growth to one of the more mature forms (http://beliefstagesandgrowth.com/blog/2007/07/29/walter-clarks-criteria-for-a-mature-religion/)that people might be able to achieve, were the less mature form not being touted in such a pat way by people like Mr. Baldwin.

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't make it past the first paragraph.......2007-09-24

I decided to check this book out because I had heard some great things about the upcoming movie "Midnight Clear". As I read the first paragraph, I was troubled by the comment he made about Barney- ??? - Rubble. What is that about? We all now what that's a euphemism for. It was a red flag for me. I'm not judging the guy. I just don't want to read that.

5 out of 5 stars Stevie B has a great Holy Spirit directed book.......2007-08-30

Stevie B's book I truely believe is inspired by God HIMSELF. What the Lord is doing in the Livin it Ministries is great. You can really see the power of God in Unusual Suspect and with the wonderful stories and teaching to the Young and old, married and unmarried alike. God is AWESOME!! I really pray that the Lord Jesus does a great and mighty work with this book and the Ministry to bring many into HIS KINGDOM.

4 out of 5 stars A realistiv view to bettering one's own self.......2007-10-10

I enjoyed Martina's book - she put into words what I couldn't. Her common sense makes it easy to understand why she is the professional that she is - it takes self-control and clarity of thinking to realize that it's not hard to have the shape you want - and thinking it, is what its all about - no need to kill yourself trying to get skinny - just go about your daily business and apply these methods in your normal daily thoughts and actions and you will be exactlly what you think you can be. Get to work and you will get what you put in to it. -Shape Your Self: My 6-Step Diet and Fitness Plan to Achieve the Best Shape of Your Life

5 out of 5 stars I heart Martina.......2007-04-13

Seriously, this woman is a national treasure and a true champ. I heard her on Howard Stern recently and was very charmed by her personality and struggles. This book is like she's talking to you one on one and she's super cool. If you really want to be healthy, this book makes the most sense. I've got books like sugar busters and the biggest loser cookbook with recipes that seem to use a lot of processed, low fat, artificially sweetened ingredients. That's not truly healthy.

Now, if you don't like vegetables or drinking water...you're truly screwed in general. If you want to be the best you, you gotta eat your veggies!! Learn to like them, be a grownup!

All her recipes are yummy and full of vitamins and fiber and a balance of protein and calcium. One thing though, when she's talking about vegetarian sources of protein, she mentions a lot of soy products and stuff like that. But, you know, brocolli has a lot of protein. All veggies have protein. Eat soy in moderation - overcooked tofu can make you gassy, the hormones in soy can be harmful to young boys..and men?? I swear I heard a report that men in Asia who ate tons of soy experienced brain shrinkage. So how about..everything in moderation..except raw veggies! Oh and her exercises are good too, but I don't do well with reading about workouts - I need a dvd where an instructor tells me what to do and when. That's just how I roll.

Martina's simple steps to slowly incorporate into your life are awesome. By just cutting out a few things and being a slightly more diligent shopper, I have found that I have an amazingly more energetic and positive outlook on my longterm life.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Gift Book, Full of the Riches of God.......2001-07-31

This book is one of the most beautiful gift books...great for any household coffee table. More than that, it is full of the beauty and riches of God and how He works in the lives of His children. The author's personal experience growing up on a Vineyard gives him the expertise to help the reader understand the spritutal aspects through the explanation of the practical. It is most definitely one of my favorites and a great gift to give to anyone...whether a believer or not. For the believer it will enrich and enhance his/her walk with God. For the unbeliever it will give a glimps of the God who loves him/her.

5 out of 5 stars Insight........2001-06-05

I absolutely love this book. I don't read a lot, but this is a book that I belive will help people who want to, to understand more about the Lord Jesus Christ and The Father in the role of Vinedresser... It is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars The vine must be carefully tended in order to bear fruit..........1999-10-08

The message in this book touched my heart, If you struggle to understand God's perfect plan read this book. The analogies are so beautifully illustrated. You will know how beloved you are by our Father, and how carefully He tends to us, throughout the stages of our spiritual growth. We need tending in order to bear fruit!

5 out of 5 stars "In My Fathers Vineyard" should be in every library.......1998-10-01

Wayne has beautifully captured the Love of our Father in his book "In My Fathers Vineyard". The book should be strategically and prominantly placed on every persons coffee table who calls him or herself a "Christian" of virtually any denomination or persuasion. Wayne uses the example of a vineyard to show God's love for all of us. The seasons, natural growth progress and grape harvesting processes are all used as warm examples of things that might or do happen in the life of any person.

5 out of 5 stars A deeply insightful book.......1998-07-24

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is searching his heart for ways to grow closer to God. The book primarily revolves around Jesus' teaching in John 15. Like most people, however, I do not have much experience with or knowledge about vineyards, so this author's profound insights taught me many wonderful things about my Father that I would have never otherwise learned. The author does a wonderful job using the situation God placed him in to teach his fellow Christian family.

Book Description

When journalist Dennis Cass found himself running after his stepfather, Bob, down New York's Amerstam Ave. he was all too aware of how the brain can rule your life. Bob struggled with manic depression and drug addiction, and as a teenager Cass' life was constantly inerrupted by the problems caused by these mental illnesses. Now an adult and new parent, Cass was determined to know just what it was in Bob's brain that kept him from being "normal" and whether understanding the brain would help him be a better parent. His curiosity led to this poignant, insightful, and often hilarious journey about discovering the inner workings of his brain.

In Head Case Cass infiltrates the world of neuroscience, offering his own brain up to research experiments such as brain mapping, sleep labs, magnetic imaging, and pharmaceutical advances. His exploits reveal the intricacies of addiction, memory, adult attention deficit disorder, and more. Along the way, he weaves in Bob's story as well as his own troubles with stress and depression, giving neuroscience a human touch along with the clinical facts.

Cass attacks the subject of the brain with his heart and mind enticing the reader, not only with a look into what makes them human, but also with his wit and candor. Head Case is an imperative read for anyone who's ever asked themselves why they are who they are.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Your mind is a terrible thing to taste..........2007-07-23

Head Case is an enjoyable journey of self discovery that many of us must travel. However, most of us don't do it with the vigor that Cass conjures up as he experiments on his own brain in his home-grown "laboratory" and offers it up to real scientists all over the country.

Whether conducting self-experiments in the kitchen while his family sleeps, or treating his real or possibly imagined ADHD with prescription meds, Cass ultimately learns more about himself, his childhood and his new role as a father than he sets out to.

It's nice to leave your brain behind and get inside someone else's for a short time. Head Case does just that. It's the neuroscience book for the rest of us. Buy it now, your brain will thank you.

4 out of 5 stars Unique and enjoyable.......2007-05-21

"Head Case" is very unique...sort of a combination of a memoir and a book about neuroscience (or at least the quest to understand neuroscience). Mr. Cass has a wonderful sense of humor...I laughed out loud on several occasions...it was a much funnier book than I thought it would be. In particular, I found his musings about Bill Maher very sharp and comical...I've had the same thoughts and feelings about Mr. Maher myself. I also really liked his depiction of his mentally ill stepfather and the time they spent as a family living in New York. I thought it was very apt portrayal of living with someone who has major psychiatric problems. While the book is a little bit scattered, I think that that actually adds to it's charm...it's not a predictable read. Anyone who has any interest in the brain or mental illness or who appreciates quirky, intelligent humor will like this book.

5 out of 5 stars Genre, Schmenre.......2007-05-16

[Full disclosure preamble: I used to work as a magazine editor, and Dennis Cass wrote for me. Some of what he wrote won awards. He's a pro. And a good guy to boot.] What's great about this book is that it messes with your expectations. You start out thinking it's a science book, and then you find yourself in memoir territory. But not icky, treacly, nobody-knows-the-trouble-I've-seen memoir; this one has a deep undercurrent of humor, despite the fact that some pretty unpleasant things go on. The science book doesn't go away--it gets augmented with the memoir. And then another section of the orchestra fires up, and it becomes a great book about writing, too. In an age when books are so often group-concocted like junior-high science projects and "branded" like candy bars or khaki pants, Head Case is a throwback to a time when you read a book because you wanted to connect with another mind.

3 out of 5 stars not really a book about neuroscience.......2007-05-13

I should have paid more attention to the Publishers Weekly review at the top and not the enthusiastic reader reviews. This is an entertaining book, to be sure. Dennis is a talented writer. But I thought this was going to be a book about the discoveries in neuroscience, with the twist that Dennis Cass was going to present a Plimpton-like account in which his first-hand experiences in various tests and machines illustrate the deeper principles revealed by the neuroscience revolution. Wrong ... Instead the book is a tale of his step-fathers tormented descent into mental illness, with some personal asides and adventures. It's still an interesting book to read, but not anywhere near what I was expecting it to be.

5 out of 5 stars Memoir at its best.......2007-05-12

If you want a victim-pitty-me memoir...don't read this book. But if you want to learn about what you should have been paying attention to in under-grad biology...read this book. If you'd like to laugh...hard and long from the warmth of self or near-self recognition...read this book. If you want to be glad to get inside someone else's very-smart head and heart, and find yourself the better for it, read this book. Then share it with someone you care about. Both of you will be the better for it. All the great elements of prose are herewith: tension, drama, release, comedy. It will remain on my shelf, with another copy bought and left with fly-leaf endorsements on the bookshelf of my favorite coffee house.

Book Description

In times of suffering, simplistic answers ring empty and hollow. But Henri Nouwen, beloved spiritual thinker and author, offers real comfort in the concrete truth of God's constancy. Nouwen suggests that by greeting life's pains with something other than despair, we can find surprising joy in our suffering. He suggests that the way through suffering is not in denial, but rather in living fully in the midst of the trials life brings our way.

5 out of 5 stars Mourning our losses and learning to live in spite of them........2007-07-14

This is an amazing book. I found it to be very validating to my life experience. The best part is that it gives a beautiful and enlightening look at suffering and puts it in perspective in the larger picture. Living in a culture that doesn't like to acknowledge suffering (or that considers it to be 'I didn't get the color of BMW that I wanted') this helps one process his/her deeply felt grief. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars More than just turning your Mourning into Dancing..........2001-10-11

Timothy Jones did an excellent job compiling and editing this Henri Nouwen book. I highly recommend this book to everyone - whether you're going through a time of mourning or helping a friend through a difficult time. This is a book that helps one recognize a deeper relationship with God - making Him known even in the most difficult times when you think He is nowhere near. Nouwen is on point when he says not to bury yourself in busy-ness. You don't learn anything from this time of mourning if you don't experience it. Don't dwell in it - but learn from it. I'm a Stephen Leader at my church and will be recommending it to all of our Stephen Ministers to help them in their caring relationships.
