Book Description
Getting In, Second Edition is an update of the American Psychological Association's essential resource for anyone considering graduate study in psychology. This handy, readable book simplifies the process for applicants and increases their chances of being accepted. Useful timelines, tips, and tools break the tasks into manageable steps and help readers define their goals, select programs, and navigate the application process. A monthly timetable and detailed worksheets for selecting the best program matches are included, and a resource section provides a list of publications and organizations that are useful in the various phases of applying. Readers will learn what criteria admissions committees use to evaluate applicants, how to improve their qualifications, and how to showcase their talents in personal essays, letters of recommendations, and preselection interviews. The costs of a graduate education and financial aid information specific to graduate students are also discussed. Members of special populations, such as women, ethnic minorities, gay and lesbian applicants, and applicants with disabilities will find resources and guidance particular to their needs. While applying to graduate school can be challenging, this book demystifies the process and allays students' concerns about how to tackle it.
Customer Reviews:
Great guide for soon to be psychologists!.......2007-09-21
This book is a comprehensive, step-by-step walk through the application process from thinking about going to grad school to accepting and declining offers (and what to do if you don't get in). It has checklists for choosing schools, one for each application you send in, and one to help in getting strong letters of recommendation. I would recommend this text to anyone applying to a graduate program in psych but would also encourage you to pick up supplemental books about writing a personal statement or whatever you'll need more than a chapter to help you.
Very helpful........2007-04-17
While I'll agree with all the positive statements made in previous reviews, I must say that this didn't seem too different from the first edition, which I checked out from the library last year. I was expecting there to be a bigger difference. But nonetheless, a great book.
More than I expected.......2007-03-03
This is what you can expect from American Psychological Association: the autors go straight to the point, and have an excellent writing. Thanks to theirs suggestion, you can consult different bibliography for special cases (for example, for international students). They make the reader revaluate his goals (like: "given this reality, is this what you really want for yourself?) and, of course, they help you prepare an useful detailed year-schedule.
Essential, easy read........2006-11-07
I recently graduated as an undergraduate and got a job in the business world. Needless to say it is not what I had in mind. I am seriously looking to go back to school as soon as possible but I feel a bit lost and cut off, now that I have graduated and moved away from school. I just picked this book up a couple of days ago and I have already learned so much about how to prepare myself for applying to grad school. There is some very valuable information in this book that you will not likely find elsewhere. It is a great, essential read and you would be hindering yourself if you did not read it.
It worked for me..........2006-01-22
A wonderful step-by-step guide for any potential, doctoral candidate. What I found most helpful was the review of "interview questions that you will most likely be asked"/"questions you should ask." In my doctoral interviews, I WAS asked approximately 3/4 of the questions that were indicated in this section. And as the book states, going into an interview without questions of your own is the kiss of death! More important are the details/process that most of us give little attention to (e.g. how to reject an offer of acceptance graciously, timelines, etc.).
Book Description
At a time when society is demanding accountability from the medical education system and residency review committees are demanding written curricula, this book offers a practical, yet theoretically sound, approach to curriculum development in medicine.
The approach described in Curriculum Development for Medical Education has evolved over the past ten years, during which time the authors have taught curriculum development and evaluation skills to faculty and fellows in the Johns Hopkins University Faculty Development Program for Clinician-Educators. Program participants have used the techniques described here to develop curricula on topics as diverse as advance directives, office gynecology for the generalist, a renal elective for internal medicine residents, and an office-based preceptorship for first-year medical students.
Short, practical, and generic in its approach, the book begins with an overview of a six-step approach to curriculum development. Each succeeding chapter then covers one of the six steps: problem identification; targeted needs assessment; goals and objectives; education methods; implementation; and evaluation. Additional chapters address curriculum maintenance, enhancement, and dissemination. Throughout, examples are used to illustrate major points. An appendix provides the reader with a selected list of published and unpublished resources on funding, faculty development, and already developed curricula. Curriculum Development for Medical Education is designed for use by program directors and others who are responsible for the educational experiences of medical students, residents, fellows, and clinical practitioners.

Helpful guide to organize medical curriculum change.......1999-05-26
Six step approach systematically guides the process of problem identification, needs assessment, writing goals and objectives, educational strategies, implementation process, and getting worthwhile evaluation and feedback. Based upon Johns Hopkins Internal Medicine model but substantial utility for all medical disciplines. I will use it in redesigning curriculum at my institution. Highly recommended!

New 16-page photo section and illustrations by Joni.
Customer Reviews:
A real encouragement to me!.......2007-03-18
Joni has experienced hardship first hand, and she understands (and acknowledges) the hurt that we feel as children of God. This book really impressed upon me that we cannot see God's provision or glory if our lives are moving along without any problems. God uses the hard times in our life to get our attention and to reveal Himself in a more personal, powerful way. This book really helped me deal with emotions related to my cancer -- Joni does not promise a happy ending (in our definition) to all of life's problems, but she does point out that nothing happens outside of God's control or love. She is believable because she has experienced this herself.
God speaks to the heart through Joni.......2003-10-31
I decided to write a review on this book because no one has yet and someone should let you know what a treasure it is. Although it has been years since I read it, this book has meant the most to me of all the books on my Christian bookshelves (except the Bible of course). Joni's experience of suffering paralysis after a tragic diving accident at age 17 has given her a unique perspective on suffering. It speaks to God's ability to see us through anything. I read it during a season of suffering, depression, anger and questioning. Joni speaks deep truths from the Lord that resonate within your spirit and help you to find peace in Christ. She helped me believe that God loves me and I learned to accept the difficult circumstances God was taking me through. Notice I said "through," Joni has been through the valleys, where there are no easy answers, and has come out victorious on the other side. One of the most beautiful aspects of Joni's book is how clearly her joy and hope shine through what could have been a life of darkness in her wheelchair.
I encourage you to read it if you need this peace, hope and joy. I often give it to friends in troubled times.
Book Description
Based on the experience of the restructuring of the MBA program at Case Western Reserve University, the book describes the transformation of a program from one where student learning was incidental to teaching and research into one where learning is preeminent. Draws from ten years of curriculum change efforts to trace the entire process of program redesign, from initial discussion to implementation and evaluation. Examines strategic planning within the professional school and describes in detail the Managerial Assessment Course--a key element of the new program and a driving force for self-directed learning.
The book provides specific designs, methods, and procedures for conducting outcome assessment studies, including five types particularly relevant to professional schools: alumni studies, employer studies, faculty studies, student-change studies, and professional competency studies. Throughout the book, the authors and contributors describe a wealth of useful, thought-provoking ideas and learnings on management education and institutional change.
Customer Reviews:
Great system .. Effective Study System.......2005-03-01
I used this book and system in college. I made staight A's.
I am buying this book for each of my kids. To be effective you must use the entire system. It works!!!
Excellent book. A must have........2005-02-17
I found this book when I was a high school science teacher and passed the title along to my students. When I went to medical school, I was concerned about making the grade. Using the skills taught in this book, I was able to study efficiently and make excellent grades. I definitely recommend this book.
Life Changer.......2003-02-11
When I found myself taking a break from school, with a C+ average, I pretty much had no direction. I didn't really have much passion for school or anything else. I got this book on a whim, and just the first part which dealt with motivation and goal setting was an eye-opener to say the least. It made me seriously reexamine my life and my direction.
The study skills portion and the skills in school (picking a teacher, staying organized, etc) were both very beneficial as well. I still have to wait until the fall semester to get back into school, but I'm confident that I'll finally have the tools that I'll need to get where I need to go.
I would definetely recommend this book to any one else who finds themselves just floating through life.
Returning To Study.......2001-06-09
Going back to study in my 30's I was concerned if I would be able to achieve results and balance other work and family commitments. ESS helped me to do all three.
This is a logical, easy to apply system for study. It takes commitment and work but - come exam time - to have an entire subject outlined and then condensed onto a handful of cards a week before the exam was great.
I recommend this to anyone looking for skills for higher education.
Must Read.......1999-10-12
Wonderful study skills book that can save students a lot of time. If you like this book, you will love "Major in Success", by Patrick Combs. I teach at a University and this book changes lives.

College grads are educated, but not always ready for life. Managing the challenges and pitfalls they'll encounter can make the difference between getting by and getting ahead.
Customer Reviews:
The best post college job hunting guide I have ever read........2006-08-24
As an HR Manager I often run into recent college grads trying to land their first real career. After reading Jack O'Brien's book I became convinced that if anyone really follows his advice they couldn't help but land a good job quickly.
Jack's advice is based on his success principles learned in his years in business. Simply stated, it takes more than just posting your resume on the Internet to get a good job these days. It takes planning, tenacity, creativity and a lot of good networking. This book gives you a no-nonsense plan on seeking out that first career and then gives you the added bonus of sharing tips on setting up your life after college.
While some of the technology mentioned is a bit out of date it does nothing to detract from the books overall message: Success in life after college is up to you and you alone. Pay close attention to his tips on interviewing, planning your week, follow up letters and post college finances.
If you do what he says you will be able to start your new life on the right foot.
Good solid advice!.......2001-04-27
I bought a copy of this book for each of my children, and I read it myself when I was challenged with finding a position in a new career field. This book contained good solid advice for all three of us.
Extremely disappointing.......2000-06-03
I bought this book for my son who recently graduated from college but I would have been better off just handing my son the money I paid for this book. The book contains out of date advice--it might have made sense for someone graduating 20 years ago but not in this millennium. Nowadays kids need solid advice on finding a job and taking charge of their finances after they graduate. Unfortunately this book does not provide the answers 22 year olds need.
I wish I had this book earlier.......2000-06-03
This is a must have for every graduate out there. The book provided great tips for surviving the real world after coming out of college. If I would have had it 10 years earlier I would have saved myself a lot of lessons learned the hard way. I have read all of the author's books and have my own personal library. I am now happily employed doing something I love and I owe it to Mr. O'Brien's great advice.
Great Guide to Getting Started and Getting Ahead.......1999-09-30
This is the ultimate collection of useful advice on everything from creating an effective job campaign to planning financially for the future. NEXT STEP is an inside source on the real world, everything from dealing with cube-life at work to staying out of credit card trouble. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out in the real world, it can help any young professional get a great job, keep a balanced life and get ahead.
