Book Description

A provocative exposÂŽ of the negative effects of sugars and simple carbs-and how to break the addiction.

Most readers already know that succumbing to sweets too often can lead to obesity and diabetes. What many don't know, however, is that too many "quickie carbs" can bring on a host of other maladies-such as "brain fog," fatigue, mood swings, heart disease, and even cancer-from which millions may be suffering because of their sugar or carbohydrate habits. Once besieged by 44 seemingly unconnected symptoms, former "sugar addict" Connie Bennett, an experienced journalist, managed to kick sweets and simple carbs in 1998. She improved her health-and uncovered extensive medical research that substantiated her theory: people who eat too many low-caliber culprit carbs could be in sugar shock. Based on the insights of thousands of physicians, nutritionists, researchers, and "sugar sufferers" worldwide, SUGAR SHOCK!(tm) not only addresses how badly sugar affects the body, it demonstrates how everyone can kick the sugar habit.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING Research & presentation.......2007-10-16

Sugar Shock is an OUTSTANDING piece of health literature that is destined to become a classic in the eyes of health professionals as well as the typical consumer. It is jam packed with great research (well footnoted) and it finally puts sugar, crappy carbs and over-processed foods into their rightful category, ie. junk-food.

I am a health coach and professional researcher myself and I recommend this book to over 80% of my clients because they need the information presented and it is easy to read... and it is important to know the information presented in this great book. Sugar Shock is a real eye-opener and an extraordinary work. Thank you Connie, for your tireless efforts to bring this truth to light for all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Avoid Lethal Diseases, Look and Feel Better, and Enjoy Life More with a Healthier Diet.......2007-10-03

Sugar Shock! is the ultimate, up-to-date view based on research for describing how consuming high glycemic foods (ones that are quickly turned into blood sugar) can undermine your health, happiness, peace, and prosperity . . . not to mention your love life and appearance. As such, the book's title is a little misleading . . . white flour, white rice, and vodka are just as much of a problem as is adding sugar to your coffee or drinking high-fructose corn syrup in your Coca-Cola. To handle that, the authors refer to anything that quickly turns into blood sugar as a sugar.

I have read many books on this subject and learned a great deal from each one. Because of so much research being done that overturns false opinions about nutrition, there's a lot that's new to report. Connie Bennett and Dr. Stephen Sinatra provide an extensive bibliography that's worth the price of the book all by itself.

Too many of these "empty" calories (called that because they provide few, if any minerals and vitamins), and you may develop diabetes, cancer, heart disease, female infertility, deep lines in your skin, and accelerate losing your memory.

If that doesn't bother you, foods that turn quickly into sugars can make you feel lousy, be angry, kill your sex drive, make menopause worse, slow down your learning, and depress you.

Further, you can become addicted to these foods . . . about half as much as you can to cocaine.

Neither the food companies nor the government really care if you eat these foods that make you sick. But you should care. With this book, you'll have a good sense of what you should be doing: eating lots of protein, slowly digested fruits and vegetables, good-for-you fats (like those in most fish), and increasing your fiber in anyway you can.

The book provides several programs to help you shift your diet. Of the advice here, the best probably relate to going on a good-for-you diet for 3 weeks to make the switchover and having lots of emotional support as you do. In that sense, the advice isn't too much different from what you'll find from The South Beach Diet and related books. I suggest you check those out as well because you'll get lots of menu and snacking ideas.

But for sheer motivation to reform your eating, it's hard to beat Sugar Shock!

Go munch on something delicious that's good for you!

5 out of 5 stars Do you want to change your life? Sugar Shock! can help.......2007-08-25

I was sugar addicted for years. When I ate sugar, I overate sugar: once I started, I couldn't stop. If I had sweet food for breakfast, I wanted sweet food for lunch, for dinner, tomorrow, and the next day... I was depressed, anxious, irritable, bitchy, and moody. I snapped at my children, lost my temper easily, and cried for no reason. My mood vacillated with my sugar binges, and my self esteem with it.

Does this sound like you?

Sugar Shock! can help. As Connie Bennett explains in her book, sugar is one of the most addictive, damaging substances on the planet. It is toxic to our bodies. And yet, it's pervasive: abstaining from sugar will mean making choices that are counter culture. At first, that can be challenging. Eating almonds while everyone else is enjoying ice cream may feel like deprivation.

But look at what you're gaining. No, I don't have apple pie at Thanksgiving, and I never will again. But here's what I found, in return: freedom from depression. Freedom from the guilt and shame that accompanied my sugar binges. Freedom from the terrible mood swings, irritability, and anger that plagued my home life. Freedom to pursue my life purpose. Freedom to be the woman, wife, mother, and friend I wanted to be.

The rewards are many. The sacrifices, really, are few. I don't miss sugar now. Honestly. My life is full: filled with real sweetness, not the toxic substitute.

Do you want to find freedom? Sugar Shock! can show you how. Freeing yourself from sugar will change your life: I guarantee it. This is one of the best books on sugar addiction that you can buy (I know: I've read them all.) The website is very helpful, too.

5 out of 5 stars sugar and tobacco different ingrediants, same addictive qualities.......2007-08-24

I recently read Sugar Shock, and honestly the title really fits in information given in this book. It is SHOCKING to find out how we are lied to, cheated and lead down a road of disease, sickness and adiction. All for the sake of someone else getting rich! Amazing. This book is such an informative tool. I recently quit smoking, and i feel much better for doing so, but my body still was out of whack.. this book is really helping me figure out why. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a way to understand how sugar can really destroy their lives.

3 out of 5 stars A Wake Up Call to how Bad I Was.......2007-08-20

I got this book at the recommendation of one the morning news programs because at the time I had sneaky suspicions that I was a sugar addict, and did not know where to turn to gain confirmation of this hypothesis.. While I waited for the book to arrive, I did my own further investigating to confirm my fears, this book did the confirming for me fully. Its an EXTREMELY easy reading book, and at times is so easy its confusing and actually boring. I'm not fond of the tagging back and forth between Dr. Sinatra and Ms. Bennett in how they present evidence. I'm more medically oriented, so I'd like less of the cutesy nomers Ms. Bennet and Dr. Sinatra place on their "bubbles of info". But, what this did for me is provide me with a checklist which Ms. Bennett lists were her symptoms of sugar addcition, which I checked all of except two. Yes Ms. Bennett's case was somewhat skewed because it was associated with a medical condition, but what the list showed me was that if I didn't wake up and recognize how HORRIBLE sugar and refined sugar is to the human body, I was going to be a Shrew just like her and more importantly do severe detriment to my health. I have since started a separate program (about 8 days into it), which does eliminate a drastic amount of sugar from one's diet and I can safely eliminate 90% of the symptoms in Ms. Bennett's checklist. Skeptics I am sure you will be too fast to call it coincidence, but my body tells me otherwise. Sugar Shock is just that, a SHOCK to wake you up if you think you have an addiction to sugar. Life is too short to feel terrible if you can feel wonderful. Thanks

IN A NUTSHELL: E-Z to grasp balanced approach

Written by a Cardiologist, this book is among the first to suggest that treating hypertension is not just about filling prescriptions and taking your medicine on time.

WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT: Using Prescribed Meds As A Last rather than a 1st Resort!

Most of all, "Lower Your Blood Pressure in Eight Weeks" is about using conventional prescription medicines as a last rather than a first resort.

So how do the Sinatras suggest doing this?

----- * DIETARY CHANGES, including the "Pan-Asian modified Mediterranean diet" plus certain amino acids [L-Arginine, L-Taurine, L-Carnitine], Co-enzyme Q10, flax, soy, fish oils, Hawthorn and much more. Comprehensive "Meal Plans" are included in the second half of the book.

BOTTOM LINE: - SAFE - EFFECTIVE - EASY TO MANAGE PROGRAM

Balanced approach to hypertension treatment which includes alternative medicine blended with conventional allopathic medicine. Best of all, this book is written by a Cardiologist [M.D.] and by a very qualified nurse [M.S.N., C.N.S., A.P.R.N.], who are a married couple.

5 out of 5 stars now, this is my kind of doctor!.......2005-12-05

I never thought I'd find a cardiologist who agrees with me that prescription drugs are a last resort, but here he is. Believe it or not, he even understands enough about real life to tell you to get your chi in shape! If you want to know which supplements live up to their hype (and some of them do), this is the book you need.

5 out of 5 stars I'm already eating lots of rice and soy..........2004-12-02

Ever wonder what Asparagus, Avacados and Anger have to do with hypertension? Although some folks suggest you should not eat Avocados if you are on a low fat diet, perhaps you will reconsider after you read Steven and Jan Sinatra's book. And although asparagus are available seasonally, so you may want to eat as many of the fresh ones as you can and avoid the canned variety unless you wash the salt off. Frozen asparagus are okay but they lack the crunch of course. The Sinatras say your best bet is to freeze your own.

Anger is the killer. Try yoga, deep breathing exercises, aromatherapy, and pets to release anger. Bodywork including massage will lower your blood pressure if you get angry. Working out with weights or walking can be wonderful stress relievers.

Quercetin in tea and/or red wine may be better for you than taking medications with COX-2 inhibitors. The Sinatras include meal plans and recipes. I'm already eating lots of soy and rice, but the Sinatras offer many other good ideas. My philosopy is `Take what you need and leave the rest" and there is plenty I can take from this book.

5 out of 5 stars This program will work!.......2003-02-18

Dr. Sinatra has used all the latest and smartest scientific info to devise a unique and effective program for anyone who wants to lower high blood pressure. I have read two of Dr. Sinatra's other books--on coenzyme Q10, and on the role of emotions in heart disease--and found them unfailingly informative, sensible, practical and insightful. I highly recommend this book.

Tears & Tiers is both a touching and disturbing fifty year mosaic depicting the Life & Times of Joseph "Mad Dog" Sullivan, Bank Robber, Escape Artisit (the only man to escape the infamous Attica prison) and notorious Hitman. While this never boring saga delves into his youthful years and forty-five years in prison to date, a hideous portrait of life within the walls. It also touches on his involvement with some past icons of our times such as Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Hoffa, and anothony "Fat Tony" Salerno, Boss of New York's Genovese crime family. Writen by Gail Sullivan his wife of over thirty years, while a great read Sullivan's life as such is not one you would wish upon anyone you hold dear.

What an awesome read!!! Finally, the sleeping bull awakens to let the rest of us know his true story. Gail throws it all at us and Joe holds no punches. Be prepared for intrigue, brutal honesty, and blunt in your face challenges. Joe, though destined to die in prison, is more alive and perceptive than ever. Told through Gail, Joe's story will have you laughing, crying and empathizing. What would terrify us is his world and experiences, but even he sees that world with the truth that it is. Not only a fine biography, but a great lesson in rough justice and one man's journey as a notorious hitman...He now in his 60s has been locked in a box, but still reaches out to us, not for glory or fame, but to show all that can go bad in a life and how to avoid a similar fate...EXCELLENT BOOK...

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Heartbreaking...........2007-03-12

"Mr. S: My Life with Frank Sinatra," written by George Jacobs - Frank's valet/personal assistant; friend; confidante of 15 years, is a very candid and extremely engrossing book. In every page, it is clear that George Jacobs truly loved Frank Sinatra as a brother. Although I knew quite a bit about Frank Sinatra's life already, I was totally unprepared for how interesting and "can't-put-it-down" this book turned out to be. I loved it.

Frank Sinatra was the best of men and the absolute worst of men. He was the most generous of men and yet he was the most vindictive of men as well. He was a contradiction in human nature in extremes. If you even slightly offended him or were perceived as disloyal, you seldom got another chance.

George tells of his relationship with Frank and Frank's rise and fall and rise to fame. He writes of his adventures with Frank's family and how wonderful "Big Nancy" was to Frank - long after the divorce. After reading this, I truly thought Frank Sinatra's first wife was a saint!

I expected this book to touch on just the superficial, but it really delved into a part of our history. Like millions of baby boomers, I idolized John F. Kennedy. Yes - I knew that he had an affair with Marilyn Monroe, but I didn't know about the barrage of call girls and cocaine. When JFK was campaigning, he asked George, "What do colored people want?" Diplomatically, George responded that he didn't know and asked Jack what he wanted (for our country). JFK, with a big leering grin, responded," I want to f*ck every woman in Hollywood." Statements like this just amazed me.

As we all know, Joe Kennedy Sr. had many mob connection from his bootlegging days. This book relates how Illinois was virtually a present to JFK from the mob in the election.

I had heard about the helicopter pad that Frank Sinatra was reported to have destroyed when John Kennedy's visit was cancelled, but I wasn't aware of the extent of John's deception. Frank Sinatra spent over a year campaigning for JFK; having "High Hopes" written and performed; and spending a fortune in anticipation of JFK's visit. Without Joe's influence, John totally turned his back on Sinatra and decided to stay at Bing Crosby's (who had supported Nixon)! Moreover, it was highly likely that he set things in motion for Marilyn's death when she threatened to expose their affair. Bobby Kennedy (whom I had also admired) and Jackie were even more ungrateful than John.

No one deserved what Woody Allen did to Mia Farrow later in life, but I couldn't help thinking that Mia was so wrong in not setting the record straight with Frank about her dancing with George. George was "babysitting" Mia and trying to pacify her when she dragged him onto the dance floor. When the paparazzi went wild with these pictures, George's life was to change forever. As a result, he was literally fired overnight by Frank Sinatra. George had money saved, but it is clear that he never recovered from this blow dealt to him by Sinatra.

My heart absolutely broke for George Jacobs. I literally cried when he tells how he burst into tears upon seeing Frank after 10 years. Frank went over and touched his shoulder and said, "Forget about it kid. It ain't so bad." I do feel Frank Sinatra "forgave" George, but I believe that Barbara Marx would never have allowed him to rehire George because he knew too much about her past.

I had always believed Barbara Marx to be a charitable woman with a great deal of class. She was actually a Vegas showgirl from a poor background who married the much older Zeppo. Everyone knew that she was simply trying to marry money and that she regularly cheated on Zeppo - often with Sinatra. He had known her for years. George was not even allowed to attend Frank Sinatra's funeral - but instead had to watch from across the street.

In the end, one realizes that George Jacobs has found peace. He honestly didn't deserve the low blow that Sinatra dealt him. However, you also realize that through his own insecurities, Frank Sinatra lost one of his dearest friends who loved him most. In the end, Frank Sinatra was the one who lost the most. I truly pray that Sinatra came to know this.

4 out of 5 stars Surpringly relevant.......2006-08-27

We all know Frank Sinatra did some interesting stuff. The author, George Jacobs, was his valet from 1953 to 1968, so he saw quite a bit of it. With honesty, brevity and wit, he tells us about it. Right out of the "truth is stranger than fiction" department. I saw a number of celebrities I recognized in here, and it was interesting to see them off camera. I saw a number of celebrities in here that I've never heard of, and they were interesting too. I think that latter point matters for readers who may perhaps be too young to remember when Frank was doing it his way. I also feel that I've stumbled onto a portrait of a time and place that I needed to see. It's a great book, not just a tell-all gossipfest. Oh, it has that too, but it's better somehow.

5 out of 5 stars Chronicles What an Unrepetant Jackass Sinatra Really Was........2006-02-19

Don't get me wrong. I'm a Sinatra Fan. Of his music. I never did buy into the crock of b.s. that painted him as some sort of cultural hero. And I always figured it would just be a matter of time before someone who worked this close to Sinatra would spill the beans. And it's all here. His double standards shine like the Hope Diamond. Do as I say and not as I do seems to be the recurring theme in the Frank Sinatra mantra. He demanded fidelity from his wives, but kept hookers by the dozen at any given time and paid for their abortions like they were monthly Visa bills while everyone else painted him as the picture perfect father of Nancy, Tina and Frank, Jr. His mob ties are legendary and by now general knowledge. Here we find Jacobs giving us all the juicy details. For some reason, the pay was good enough for Jacobs to tolerate Sinatra's unending racial and ethnic slurs which he apparently tossed around freely, never fearing consequence. Yet, for his entire career Sinatra was championed as a great Civil Rights pioneer. Okay, but any Civil Rights pioneer shouldn't toss the N word around so freely. It's not until the late sixties that Sinatra becomes a philanthropist of sorts to untarnish his disgusting image. Jacobs paints an interesting portrait of Old Blue Eyes as the Ultimate Paradox. I found the writing tight, honest and overall it's a book I couldn't put down once I picked it up. Unfortunately, Jacobs himself was kicked out of the Sinatra fold eventually, which makes the story all that more credible. I walked away from the book with a bevy of emotions, angry mostly, that such a talent could be such a jerk for most of his life. There were consequences for the Chairman always wanting to have it his way in his personal and professional life, and now that he's gone we may never know how it might've played out. Today I imagine Frank Sinatra would've been diagnosed as some sort of bi-polar idiot. God knows half of our musicians use that condition as an excuse for their stupid behavior. There indeed is a fine line between genius and lunacy. You'll read Jacob's memoir and walk away satisfied yet ticked off. Guaranteed.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Document of Cultural History.......2005-11-19

I didn't have high expectations for this book. The British royal family has shown us that tell-alls by "valets" and the like leave much to be desired, but this book was a wonderful surprise. It serves not only as an unusual insight into an American icon -- Frank Sinatra -- but also a cultural history of a young black man, George Jacobs, coming of age in the 1950's and 1960's with a front row seat on some of the most important figures of our time from Joe Kennedy to Ava Gardner to Sammy Davis, Jr. I think this book gives provocative insight on our American history through the lens of race, gender and popular culture.

4 out of 5 stars From Bedroom to Board Room, He Was Larger Than Life.......2005-02-02

"Mr. S: My Life with Frank Sinatra," by his valet of 15 years George Jacobs (whom Sinatra fired for dancing with Mia Farrow), is filled with enough vanity, insecurity, envy, racism, drinking, smoking, womanizing and deal-making for three lifetimes. Jacobs takes the reader into the "board room" and the bedroom to reveal intimate portraits of the supremely talented larger-than-life Chairman himself, the woman he never stopped loving (Ava Gardner), mobster associates like one-time Al Capone "wheel man" Sam Giancana, that pitiful plaything of the rich and famous, Marilyn Monroe, and the utterly vile Kennedy father (who was even "crueler about Jews than he was about blacks") and his charismatic, whore-mongering son (drinking, drugs and round-the-clock sex that had even the insatiable Sinatra panting).

If Ronald Reagan's motto was "Win one for the Gipper," JFK's (and Sinatra's) surely had to be "Win one for the zipper."

Book Description

An odyssey of celebrity, extravagance, and genius, Mr. S provides the deepest understanding yet of one of our greatest entertainers

As the right hand of Frank Sinatra from 1953 to 1968, George Jacobs arguably had one of the coolest jobs in the world at the time when Sinatra was the undisputed master of the entertainment universe. Jacobs rose from his humble beginnings in New Orleans to join Sinatra in the mansions of Beverly Hills, the penthouses of Manhattan, the palaces of Europe, the pinnacles of world power. George Jacobs saw it all, did it all.

Sinatra took Jacobs with him on the ride of the century, from blacklist Hollywood to gangland Chicago to an emerging Vegas to Camelot, not to mention dolce vita Rome and swinging London. As a member of Sinatra's inner circle, Jacobs drank with Ava Gardner, danced with Marilyn Monroe, massaged John F. Kennedy, golfed with Sam Giancana, and played jazz with the Prince of Monaco while his boss secretly pursued Princess Grace. He also partied with Mia Farrow, but that one cost him his job of a lifetime.

Through the ring-a-ding-ding and the stars, royals, politicians, moguls, and mobsters emerged a warm and intimate relationship that reveals a complex Sinatra: vulnerable and arrogant, charismatic and violent, loving and disdainful, confident and painfully self-conscious. Jacobs is no sycophant, but rather a sharp-eyed observer of the highs and lows of his boss's turbulent life. And Mr. S is perhaps the most complete, honest, and intimate portrait of Sinatra ever written.

It is an unforgettable trip, and George Jacobs provides a front-and-center seat at the life of an American icon.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book........2007-03-30

I found this book a very good read. It was funny, sad, and just a tad bit dirty. Mr. Jacobs does a great job of painting the scene and life of the Ring-A-Ding-Ding era and the man who helped defined it all.

Nothing really groundbreaking about Mr.S, but it does give fun & interesting insight. This is a great read if you want something light and fun to read about the great Mr. S, then this is the book!

5 out of 5 stars Mr. S: My Life with Frank Sinatra.......2007-01-09

George Jacobs was "there" as Sinatra's Valet and tells the inside stories but with deep respect. This aint Kitty Kelly. He obviously loved the man even after he was fired from the gig. His kind of honesty is rare and his access to the very center of the Sinatra fears, vulnerabilities and victories is unparralleled.

I learned more Real Stuff about Frank in this quick reading book than in any of the other Great Volumes preceeding it.

5 out of 5 stars Bittersweet and loving.......2006-03-17

One of a handful of truly worthwhile books on Sinatra (joining a short list of Will Friedwald's "The Song is You" and Pete Hamill's "Why Sinatra Matters"...and that's it!). Although one suspects many of the quips and witticisms that abound in this book are probably from the brain of Jacob's co-writer, the feel and insight is purely inside stuff. While there is plenty of dirt, it is served up with affection and sympathy. The important thing is that "Mr S" is a very readable book. You will not be bored.

5 out of 5 stars Come fly with him.......2005-03-13

Reading George Jacobs' memoir of his years as Frank Sinatra's right-hand man, I am struck by the star's sense of failure, despite having almost everything. He never got over second wife Ava Gardner. He sought but failed to get a Best Acting Oscar. His career declined while third wife Mia Farrow, barely out of her teens, hit it big with "Rosemary's Baby." Sinatra was rejected by the Kennedys, as well as gangster Sam Giancana, whose loss in some ways he appears to have taken harder. And he severed various friends - including Jacobs - ultimately doing more damage to himself.

Sinatra did not age gracefully. Lucky enough to get a second youth after his 1953 comeback, he underwent a second midlife crisis in the mid-1960s. How hard must it must have been to enter one's fifties, while popular culture overnight became about teenagers - their rebellions, music, fashions, and most of all contempt for Frank Sinatra's generation.

As Jacobs leaves in 1968, fired for generating tabloid headlines one night when Farrow drags him onto a dance floor, Sinatra at 52 is getting lonelier and meaner, with hardly any boon companions from his heyday still in sight. Jacobs focuses on those earlier, happier, peak years, where Sinatra's star quirks were leavened by kindness and consideration, and tarnished with fewer tantrums and less vindictiveness; and he shows how the decline began.

The book exceeds my expectations, tribute to William Stadiem's great ghostwriting and Jacobs' three-dimensional Sinatra portrait. What seems remarkable is his determination not to trash a man who, at the end, treated him poorly. Neither does he take easy shots at the Rat Packers for the ubiquitous ethnic jokes and slurs; he sees it in the context of the time, as banter rather than hate. Sinatra named his own plane "El Dago."

No one else saw Sinatra close up with so many of the key people in his life. Jacobs babysat Ava Gardner at Sinatra's Palm Springs house. Jacobs found her mesmerizing for not only her beauty but her unaffected charm, and fully understands why Sinatra never got over her. Jacobs' own apartment was next to Marilyn Monroe's. Sinatra put him there to keep an eye on the troubled actress whom the singer feared was an overdose waiting to happen. Jacobs drove home the countless starlets, paid the countless hookers, bought the flowers and chocolates and gifts for the countless girlfriends. He tended bar at Sinatra's recording sessions with Nelson Riddle. He gave backrubs to JFK and had lengthy conversations with him, mostly about "pussy." (JFK was fascinated by shaved ones, which he called "naked lunch." Women deeply offended by all this should regard this book as "Sex and the City" for guys.) Jacobs' own friendship with Sinatra's mother Dolly survived his firing, showing what an insider he really was.

Your prurient interest will be fed on virtually every page. The kiss-and-tell rings true. Detractors may fault Jacobs for dishing on dead principals unable to defend themselves, but it may also be seen as a measure of his regard for their privacy, waiting for decades until they were gone before finally cashing in on his recollections. A taste:

--Marilyn Monroe often went naked at home, regardless of who was watching. She endlessly regarded herself in her wall-to-wall mirrors to see who was the fairest one of all - or if she was too fat. She pined for Sinatra, but her slovenly habits and lack of hygiene were inimical to a man fastidious nearly to the point of obsessive-compulsiveness. Monroe's ex Joe DiMaggio, like Sinatra, swung, shall we say, a pretty big bat.

--Jacobs walked in on JFK snorting coke with Peter Lawford, on the sly from Sinatra who hated narcotics. Jacobs describes his shock at seeing the presidential candidate with a coke straw up his nose. Kennedy eased the tension with a quip: " `For my back, George,' Kennedy said to me, with his bad-boy wink."

--Jacobs loved Jack but loathed his father as a racist and gangster. Sinatra lusted for Kennedy's sister and Lawford's wife Pat. Jacobs believes Joe Kennedy used Pat as sexual bait to put Lawford in Sinatra's circle, and the Sinatra circle thus in the Kennedys', in the 1950s.

--Major stars like Monroe and Judy Garland constantly demanded sex from Frank to shore up their own egos on tearful nights, which he usually delivered out of mercy. His own nightly search for amour he called "Dialing For Pussy."

--Jacobs watched, fascinated, from a window, as Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo frolicked naked in Sinatra's pool at Palm Springs. And he kept Prince Rainier occupied, delivering fancy gifts and listening to jazz albums, while Frank dallied secretly with Princess Grace.

There's plenty that's less trashy, of course, like Jacobs' recollection of Humphrey Bogart, whom Sinatra idolized and aped. (Sinatra's mesalliance with Farrow seems an unsuccessful imitation of Bogart's marriage across the decades to Lauren Bacall.) Of more substance are the complex business and personal relationships between the Chairman, the Mob and the Kennedys. Jacobs shrewdly sees the money and power interests beneath the camaraderie, the spats, the feuds and the girl-chasing. The Rat Pack? A three-year commercial for liquor, in Jacobs' opinion, benefitting mob liquor and nightclub interests. "Ocean's 11"? Free advertising for the JFK campaign: Nixon was a square but Kennedy hung in Vegas with these cool guys. Mob influence in Hollywood? The Mob had the capital, the labor and the daring to invest in entertainment when Wall Street thought it too risky and too Jewish. Sinatra regarded Giancana, more than anything else, as a business genius.

This book is interesting on almost every page. Standard bios of Sinatra may serve better for putting his whole life in perspective. For your best second read, though, come fly with Jacobs.

3 out of 5 stars My Life with an Obsessed Man.......2005-03-03

Yeah, on the one hand, it's sleazy. On the other, it's nevertheless interesting to look into the shiny life of Frank and the decadent world of entertainment.

George Jacobs was Sinatra's personal valet during Frank's most popular phase until he was fired for dancing with his wife one night (Mia Farrow, who the author had to babysit while Frank got up to more of his antics).

No doubt there's a little bitterness, but the tone of the book is not negative. Jacobs deserved better than to be written off with a lawyer's note, as was Frank's habit with getting rid of 'friends', but we can still get a dirty look inside the Chairman of the Board's lifestyle.

The focus is Frank, so we have to forgive George as he glosses over his marriages, his various kids here and there, and his supposed restraint in the face of temptation when he hung with Frank and his crew.

Sinatra comes off as an obsessed man, and while there is probably not much in the way of surprises here, we get some dirty details and some insight into Frank's 'way'. While Sinatra could be a great guy, he was also an obsessed man, a guy who just couldn't be alone, and a man who never got over Ava Gardner. Read with gusto about Frank's 'detailed' files on all the new starlets in Tinseltown, about Frank's anatomical gifts, about his appetite for Jack Daniel's and cigarettes, his gangster pals, and his raging temper. 'One-take Frank' was also an accomplished actor who refused to do more than one take, making one wonder what a Sinatra/Kubrick film would look like.

Jacobs seems to love Frank, but he has a lot to tell, and I guess that means exposing some ugliness about his former boss. Of course, since Frank is dead, he can't sue, making the appearance of this book quite convenient. Still, it's an inside, if sleazy angle. And it serves as another reminder that Hollywood is a sleazy and amoral place where some of the lowest forms of life creep.

Everything from the childlike glee that Frank got from setting off cherry bombs in his friends' shoes (this is a 50 year old man, mind you) to his use of his personal valet as a babysitter for wives and girlfriends while Frank got up to, er, other assignments, is all here.

Jacobs should either be condemend or applauded or both. Either way, we get to pick through the sleaze of the great American vocalist in all his pinky ring glory.

Book Description

No one represents the Italian American journey from undesirable outsiders to embraced citizens better than Frank Sinatra. From impoverished beginnings in an immigrant, single-parent household to world renown as "Chairman of the Board," he beat the odds to become one of the most influential and best-loved artists of the twentieth century. Sinatra's symbolic role to the millions of Italian American immigrants who looked up to him as proof of the American dream was far-reaching. From teenage crooner to civil rights activist to Reagan Republican, his shifting identity resonated deeply in Italian American culture. Now, a gathering of distinguished historians, journalists and critics explore Sinatra's impact on American culture, from questions of politics and civil rights to Italian mothering, morality, and ethnic stereotyping. These insights place Sinatra at the fulcrum of many controversial and timely issues that lend his influence a new depth and power, not only musically but in a broad historical context.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A New Look at Old Blue Eyes.......2007-04-10

Stan Pugliese's book is outstanding. It outlines the way Italian American culture was shaped and influenced by Frank Sinatra by putting together a series of scholarly articles dealing with the history, politics, identity, and representation of Sinatra's life. It is an entirely new perspective on an old story. The book was written in order to cast a scholarly light on some hazy issues that have been overlooked in the past. All of the articles are written by collegiate historians (all of whom have impressive working bibliographies).

This is an excellent source for anyone interested in researching Sinatra because it is written with a modern perspective (c. 1994). This is not intended to be a biography, and reading it with a background knowledge of Sinatra is helpful. This book is only really meant to be geared toward historians or scholars that are familiar with Sinatra's life.

The book is extremely well-written and well-researched, and I would recommend it to anyone who is familiar with Sinatra and his life (which also means being familiar with the context of his life). For researching purposes, the book was extremely helpful.

This book wasn't actually for me, it was for my father-in-law, who is 100% Italian, and probablly Frank Sinatra's biggest fan! So for Christmas I was on a mission to bring his 2 favorite things together... Although I didn't read the book, he was very excited about the book, and has told us that he enjoyed it very much :o)

Book Description

From the best-selling author of Goddess: The Secret Lives of Marilyn Monroe, the first fully documented, comprehensively researched, birth-to-death biography—the definitive life—of Frank Sinatra.

Sinatra is the story of an American icon who held the imagination of millions for more than fifty years and whose influence in popular music was unsurpassed in the twentieth century. As a child, he said, he had heard “symphonies from the universe” in his head. No one could have imagined where those sounds would lead him. Tracing the arc of this incredible life, from the humble beginnings in Hoboken to the twilight years as a living legend in Malibu, Sinatra follows a career built on raw talent, sheer willpower—and criminal connections.

Drawing on a treasure trove of documents and interviews, Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan reveal stunning new information about Sinatra’s links to such Mafia figures as Sam Giancana and Lucky Luciano. And we see for the first time where the Mafia connection began, how and why it lasted, and how it impinged on others, not least President John F. Kennedy.

Here, too, is the core of the private Sinatra—alternately caustic and sympathetic—that the singer so long concealed. The heartbreaking truth about his passion for Ava Gardner emerges from never-before-published conversations with Gardner herself. In exclusive, intimate interviews, the women who loved Sinatra—some of them unknown to the public until now—share memories of the joy and pain of their relationships with him. And we learn what it was like to be the friend of a man who was generous and loyal to a fault, yet—as some of his fellow Rat Packers discovered—who could turn abruptly into a vindictive brute.

Dramatic, eye-opening, and unfailingly fair-minded, Sinatra is masterful biography: the revelatory story of a brilliant artist and an infinitely complex man.

4 out of 5 stars Sinatra: All about MUSIC, MOLLS, MOB and MEMORIES. He did it his way and he didn't care what anyone else thought about it!.......2007-08-08

Francis Albert Sinatra (1915-1998) grew up in a lower middle class home in Hoboken, New Jersey. Frank's parents were from immigrant Italian families; mother Dolley was a strong community figure working with politicians and mobsters as she performed abortions. His father Marty held a succession of jobs; was a boxer and was uxorioius in his relationships with the strong Mrs Sinatra.
Frank dropped out of school and was a mama's only child petted and pampered. He began singing at local clubs eventually landing a stint with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey bands as lead singer. Girls went wild for him at the Paramount Theatre; he went to Hollywood where he made movies (winning an Oscar for best supporting actor for his "Maggio" charcter in "From Here To Eternity." Ole Blue Eyes performed in nightclubs and theatres throughout the USA and the world. He loved Los Vegas performing for many years at the mob owned Sands Hotel. He and his rat pack playmates Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Sammy Davis Jr. and Shirley McClaine stood at the top of the entertainment ladder of accomplishments.
Summers and his spouse Robbyn Summers have done their research in this well chronicled career. Over 100 pages of footnotes and 300 reference books as well as over 500 interviews lend credence to their assertions regarding the singer's Cosa Nostra ties. The mob forced Tommy Dorsey to release Frank from his contract or face personal retaliation. Later film studio head Harry Cohn was forced to cast Sinatra in "From Here to Eternity' or face mob violence.
Frank was a friend of such notorious organized crime figures as Lucky Luciano; Frank Costello, Sam Giacanna and others. He served as a go-between between the Kennedy family and the mob during JFK's presidential campaign of 1960. Sinatra would later become a Republican who was friendly with the Reagan family.
Frank was an alcoholic and a lifetime womanizer. He wed his teenage sweetheart Nancy by whom he had three children: Nancy, Frank Jr. and Tina. Sinatra may also have fathered illegitimate children. The great love of his life was Ava Gardner whom he wed on November 7, 1951. The tempestuous duo fought, drank and were unfaithful during their short marriage. Sinatra later wed Mia Farrow who was over 20 years his junior.
His last wife was Barbara Marx the divorced wife of Zeppo Marx. Barbara was a Vegas showgirl who was not liked by the Sinatra family.
Sinatra was a great singer with such hits as "I Did It My Way:; "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning; "New York, New York", "Nancy With the Smiling Face", "Night and Day" and "Strangers in the Night."
He was not a very nice man. He could be cruel often being up columnists and erstwhile friends in public places. He often lied about his mob friends. Sinatra could become violent in a second with a hair-trigger temper and a Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde personality. The kid from Hoboken was intelligent enjoying serious reading, classical music and art.
The material garnered by Summers and Swan makes for a good celebrity biography of a complex figure of American popular culture. I recommend it to anyone interested in Sinatra or the Mob in America.

1 out of 5 stars Mob and Sex.......2007-03-20

To be short, if you're interested in Sinatra's sex life and Mafia connections, that's your book. But if you want to know more about his music or his career as an actor, skip it.
Nevertheless all the authors' effort to be "objective", the fact is they simply don't like Sinatra, and try, all the time, to desconstruct the mith. But as someone has said: "a world without heroes is like a world without sun".

5 out of 5 stars Doing Things "His Way".......2006-10-23

Sinatra: romantic rogue or front man for the mob. Probably both, though which part predominates will likely never be settled. His life and career are presented in some detail in the Summers-Swan book, which I picked up because of Summers' reputation for unflinching jounalism. All in all, I wasn't disappointed. The various phases of Sinatra's long and controversial life are presented with little editorial comment, excepting an outspoken admiration for the vocal artistry. Critics who claim editorial bias or warmed-over news have lttle textual support for the former and a lack of understanding of the latter. And if the facts too often reflect poorly on Sinatra's character, I take that to be the result of having done things " his way", rather than the result of a slanted account. The absence of material on the singer's family life amounts to the book's biggest deficiency, the consequence of Nancy and the children's refusal to be interviewed. Too bad, because that would have provided additional insight.

Whatever the truth behind the tawdry altercations and underworld associations, their frequency and nature add up to an unmistakably abusive pattern. Here the truth lies in the whole. One serious example concerns Sinatra's relations with the carnally-obsessed JFK. It seems that in stoking his ego by setting up "dates" for the president, Sinatra remains unfazed by the fact that he is also opening up the highest office in the land to mob blackmail. In fact, neither man appears much concerned with the possible consequences of their careless actions. And while some may romanticize the culture of organized crime, the mob nevertheless remains one of the single most corruptive forces in our land. And that's the main reason for taking an interest in Sinatra's life, in particular. There are hundreds of abusive, ego-driven celebrities with shady connections in Hollywood-- the nature of show business breeds them. But few have ever wielded the clout or dwelled so centrally at the crucial intersection of pop culture, politics, and organized crime as Sinatra. His life story thus amounts to much more than one more cynical rags-to-riches anecdote from Tinsel Town.

1 out of 5 stars This book is a disgrace.......2006-08-28

This book was a compendium of every negative and unsubtantiated event that ever took place in the legendary singers life. It is full of third handed accounts that attempted to get beyond the reported story and tried to convince you that Sinatra was the most despicable human to ever walk the face of the earth.

It is filled with inaccuracies, such as the movie Guys and Dolls was a weak attempt at re-creating the Broadway Play, when the opposite is closer to the truth and that it has been hailed by many famous producers and directors as being one of the greatest musicals ever brought to screen. Or that Shirley McClaine when touring with Sinatra in the 1990's was the last surviving Rat Pack member when just about everybody knows that Joey Bishop is still alive and well.

I actually learned nothing from this book about the Man. The authors intent to discredit Sinatra and portray him as some kind of monster prevented any truly insightful look into his personality. If you believe the conclusions this book led you to, Sinatra was an alcoholic, rapist, communist, draft dodger, and a bag boy for the mafia. In fact it was even suggested Sinatra had a hand in the Kennedy assasination.

If you absolutely detest Sinatra then this is the book for you. It will confirm all of your psychotic notions about the man and you'll also descend into this fictional, sensationalized account of a great entertainer who deserved a better fate than to be portrayed as an insecure low life.

2 out of 5 stars drinking, sex and the mob, not enough about the art.......2006-06-17

Summers dwells on and on about Sinatra's drinking, his women, his mob ties and his meanness. All very interesting, much of it new and revealing. One is left with a bitter, smarmy confusion about this icon of the American music scene. John Lahr once wrote a splendid piece about Sinatra's artistry of the singer in the New Yorker. Summers spends little space on the artistry of the singer and the significant contributions of Nelson Riddle. One wonders why not complete the portrait of Sinatra more than Summers did. the book would have been far more fulfilling.

5 out of 5 stars Great New Sinatra book.......2007-09-12

This book is a great read for Sinatra fans. Lots of little tidbits you probably have never read before and I speak as a reader and owner of just about every book ever written on him. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Just between us - an interesting read if your a Sinatra fan.......2006-08-30

It is a pleasure to read a book about Frank Sinatra by an intimate who is not seeking to make money on the strength of the name. These are the memories of an obviously talented musician who happened to be propelled from the lounges of the Las Vegas casinos to travelling and working with and for the finest popular singer of the 20th century. No great revelations here but then no muckraking either. Mt Falcone went on to work with most of the other remaining artists in this field of music and his story was worth telling and worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Music and Mr. Falcone.......2006-07-06

This book by Vincent Falcone is not just about his association with Frank Sinatra. It's about a guy who's passion for music and the mastery of his craft bring him to the top of the heap, that is, becoming the musical conductor for "The Chairman of the Board". I enjoyed this book because it's the story of a humble man who followed his dream but always kept his feet firmly planted on the ground. I came away admiring Mr. Falcone's determination. His stories about Mr. S were insightful, entertaining and poignant. I particularly enjoyed his stories about the bandmembers. This book was an easy read-direct and full of inside information, such as Mr. S's backstage requirements.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. S. would approve!.......2006-01-31

I loved this book!! This is a great book about Frank Sinatra written by someone who worked with him and really knew him. Lots of great stories about Mr. S. and other entertainers. I found myself also enjoying reading about Vincent's life. I found his success story and positive attitude really inspiring. This book was so enjoyable to read that I started slowing down because I didn't want it to end. If you want to read a great book from someone who was really there -- then get this book right away!! Thanks, Vincent!

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A RIDE AND WHAT A READ!.......2006-01-22

This book is an absolute must for all fans of Frank Sinatra. It is full of fascinating behind the scenes glimpses of the legendary entertainer, many of which will likely surprise you. The story is told in a voice and style that made me feel I was right there along for the wild rollercoaster ride that brought a young unknown from Syracuse N.Y. to the pinnacle of his profession: touring the world with The Chairman of the Board. There are also some very funny anecdotes involving comedians. Plus, the author offers a number of vauable insights into what it takes to carve out a successful career in music, regardless of the era. One of the most enjoyable reads I've ever had. I'm giving the book as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT READ FROM A DOCTOR KNOWN FOR WISE HEALTH PRACTICES.......2006-04-08

IN A NUTSHELL:

"Optimum Health" by Stephen Sinatra, M.D., is an very readable examination of our western lifestyle in search of the root causes of some of the most persistent and problematic ailments we face. Dr. Sinatra analyzes, with the use of empirical evidence and recent medical research, some of the ways that specific behaviorial factors may cause or prevent health problems in humans. More importantly, he outlines what steps we can take to help insure better health for ourselves. Most importantly these are steps we can take without major expenses are changes that are difficult to maintain.

BUT -- FORTUNATELY THERE IS MORE -- LOTS MORE:

LIKE MANY OF DR. SINATRA'S BOOKS MUCH IS MADE ABOUT FOOD!

We are what we eat, and Dr. Sinatra never seems to lose sight of that fact. In many of his books, including this one, he details a healthy diet, though in this book he explains why it is healthy more than in some of his other volumes, which leads him into a discussion of Vitamins, minerals, herbs, and supplements and more.

Dr. Sinatra takes hold of specific issues, like "good fat" and "bad fat", and makes a chapter about it, clarifying the 'whats-what' about fats -- very critical to our health that we understand this stuff. He also suggests specific modifications in diet, excercise and specific nutrition, that may have health benefits, without sacrifice.

VITAMINS - MINERALS - CO-ENZYME Q10 - AMINO ACIDS - HERBS - :

The above are just a few examples of the types of topics that are examined with specific applications to our better health in mind. It is particularly satisfying to get this type of information and advice from a cardiologist trained in western allopathic medicine, just like most doctors in this country. In essence, if Dr. Sinatra can utilize 'blended medicine' in his pr

Dr. Sinatra delves into the means by which specific ailments, such as arthritis, heart disease, high cholesterol and others, can be treated with foods, nutritional supplements and a change in diet. He also includes a lucid description of Vitamins, Minerals and other supplements, from the standpoint of their use for maintaining or improving human health.

BOTTOM LINE:

Real good stuff and easily read and enjoyed by almost anybody. Dr. Sinatra has written a number books in the field that include, "Naturally lowering your blood pressure - in just 6 weeks" , and others. I have read, "How To Lower Your Blood Pressure In 6 Weeks" - and it has helped me to safely utilize some non-drug alternatives to augment the extensive use of anti-hypertension drugs that I have lived with for decades. This book is similar, but it has a much broader focus, making it more important and useful to a greater number of people.

5 out of 5 stars How to stay healthy and live longer........2002-10-31

Dr. Stephen Sinatra is a board-certified cardiologist who has thoroughly researched the true causes of the diseases which plague modern Americans, including various forms of heart disease plus cancer and various degenerative diseases. He has discovered that most of these diseases are caused by faulty eating habits and lack of certain essential nutrients. This excellent book discusses these and other factors in highly-readable terms. If you read this book and implement the simple factors which it recommends you can improve your health and add healthy years to your life. That seems very worthwhile to me. I hope that it does to you too.
