5 out of 5 stars This should settle the arguments!.......2007-05-07

It's really two games. I invited neighbors over to watch on my new TV. Most were NOT big basketball games. We were playing Michigan State. We had professors pounding on the floor and yelling. One woman couldn't stand the three overtime tension any more and locked herself in the bathroom. When a close friend who had been out of town returned home, I said, "You missed the greatest game ever." But then we had to play Kansas and Wilt Chamberlin. Coach put his shortest player on the floor to tip-off against Wilt. The crowd roared with laughter. Psyched Wilt out of his socks. The game went to triple overtime. I always said the team ("four Irishmen and a Jew") was made up of Drama Majors. Every game in their undefeated season was a cliff hanger. This book captures the whole story, the undefeated season, the finals, the whole nine yards. Don't miss it!

Book Description

In the last three decades North Carolina has witnessed a remarkable growth in population, economic development, and political importance, and it now ranks as the tenth most populous state in the Union. The Tar Heel State: A History of North Carolina constitutes the most comprehensive and inclusive single-volume chronicle of the state's storied past to date, culminating with an attentive look at recent events that have transformed North Carolina into a southern megastate.

Integrating tales of famous pioneers, statesmen, soldiers, farmers, captains of industry, activists, and community leaders with more marginalized voices, including those of Native Americans, African Americans, and women, Milton Ready gives readers a view of North Carolina that encompasses perspectives and personalities from the coast, "tobacco road," the piedmont, and the mountains in this sweeping history of the Tar Heel State. The first such volume in more than two decades, Ready's work offers a distinctive view of the state's history built from myriad stories and episodes.

Ready begins with a study of the state's geography and then invites readers to revisit dramatic struggles of the American Revolution and Civil War, the early history of Cherokees, the impact of slavery as an institution, the rise of industrial mills, and the changes wrought by modern information-based technologies since 1970. Mixing spirited anecdotes and illustrative statistics, Ready describes the rich Native American culture found by John White in 1585, the chartered chaos of North Carolina's proprietary settlement, and the chronic distrust of government that grew out of settlement patterns and the colony's early political economy. He challenges the perception of relaxed intellectualism attributed to the "Rip van Winkle" state, the notion that slavery was a relatively benign institution in North Carolina, and the commonly accepted interpretation of Reconstruction in the state. Ready also discusses how the woman suffrage movement pushed North Carolina into a hesitant twentieth-century progressivism.

In perhaps his most significant contribution to North Carolina's historical record, Ready continues his narrative past the benchmark of World War II and into the twenty-first century. From the civil rights struggle to the building of research triangles, triads, and parks, Ready recounts the events that have fueled North Carolina's accelerated development in recent years and the many challenges that have accompanied such rapid growth, especially those of population change and environmental degradation.

The Tar Heel State is enhanced by one hundred and ninety illustrations and five maps.

4 out of 5 stars A History of the Old North State.......2006-01-01

Milton Ready has written an inclusive, yet fairly concise history of North Carolina from the failed attempt of colonization on Roanoke Island in 1585 to modern North Carolina, now one of the most diverse and populated states in the country. In highly readable prose, this book is sure to become a welcome addition to the other sources on this state, a state rich in history.

North Carolina was the site of the first attempt for English colonization in the late 16th Century, though it was short lived. Through the sketches and descriptions by John White and others we get to see the Natives already inhabiting the coast as well as their culture. Ready also gives us a good background on the geology and geography that made North Carolina unique and how it determined the future growth (slowly) for this state.

Ready traces the major points of early North Carolina's history including the years of the Lords Proprietors presence and attempts to form and establish this region, the British Royal rule of the colony (though never really strong), to the debates and issues that led North Carolina to espouse independence from British rule and hence join with its sister colonies to form a new independent nation. North Carolina's role however was not as pronounced as some other colonies and as Ready shows throughout North Carolina's history, it was slow to change and accept the consequences that came along with that change.

North Carolina, at least early on, never enjoyed the benefits or the subsequent negative results of major industrialization and growth. North Carolina lacked major cities, major ports, as well as an emphasis on improving basic infrastructure and education and other important aspects that contribute to the rise in development and economic prowess of a region. Slavery did grow however, though not as dominant as in other Southern states. Ready ably discusses North Carolina lagging growth rate as well as how the institution of slavery played out up to and through the Civil War years. North Carolina did not suffer the type of destruction to property and industrial capacity as other Southern states suffered, especially during Sherman's march, but North Carolina did pay a price in terms of casualties to the war; North Carolina provided more troops to the Confederacy than any other state.

Reconstruction, the rise of the Populist and Progressive eras and their influence on North Carolina, the decline of rural, farm life and the economic development of North Carolina especially in the Piedmont, the Civil Rights movement and so many other aspects of North Carolina's history are at least briefly detailed.

I'm leaving out a lot, but this book is very inclusive, especially when giving due attention to the history and contributions of Native Americans such as the Cherokees, blacks, whites and all who have been a part and contributed to the history of this great state. Instead of using endnotes and footnotes, Ready lists his sources at the end of each chapter. I'm sure there are many topics he has not covered or given enough attention to, but in a one volume book on the history of an entire state, I guess it's hard to include everything. A good book for the general reader.

Book Description

In 1795 the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill became the first state university in the United States to open its doors to students. As the celebrated institution prepared to observe its bicentennial, William Snider provided a rich chronicle of its history.

Snider describes the signal events of the university's first two hundred years: the chartering and siting of a charming campus and village; the trying years of the Civil War and Reconstruction, during which the University closed its doors; the period of remarkable renewal in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the achievement of national and international stature in the 1920s and 1930s; the challenging 1960s; and the period of expansion and innovation in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Throughout, Snider provides fine portraits of individuals prominent in the life of the university, from William R. Davie and Joseph Caldwell to Harry Woodburn Chase, Frank Porter Graham, and William C. Friday. His book evokes for all who have been part of the Chapel Hill community memories of their own associations with the campus and a sense of the greater history of the institution of which they were a part.

As the first public university in the United States, UNC truly served as a "light on the hill" in advocating for public higher education. Tar Heels will love learning about the history of their illustrious university and all its traditions and legacies. This book is historically accurate and intellectually provocative, while still compelling and interesting for leisure reading.

Book Description

The Pettigrew-Kirkland-MacRae Brigade was one of North Carolina's best-known and most successful units during the Civil War. Formed in 1862, the brigade spent nearly a year protecting supply lines before being thrust into its first major combat at Gettysburg. There, James Johnston Pettigrew's men pushed back the Union's famed Iron Brigade in vicious fighting on July 1 and played a key role in Pickett's Charge on July 3, in the process earning a reputation as one of the hardest-fighting units in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Despite suffering heavy losses during the Gettysburg campaign, the brigade went on to prove its valor in a host of other engagements. It marched with Lee to Appomattox and was among the last Confederate units to lay down arms in the surrender ceremony.

Earl Hess tells the story of the men of the Pettigrew-Kirkland-MacRae Brigade, and especially the famous 26th North Carolina, chronicling the brigade's formation and growth under Pettigrew and its subsequent exploits under William W. Kirkland and William MacRae. Beyond recounting the brigade's military engagements, Hess draws on letters, diaries, memoirs, and service records to explore the camp life, medical care, social backgrounds, and political attitudes of these gallant Tar Heels. He also addresses the continuing debate between North Carolinians and Virginians over the failure of Pickett's Charge.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A first-rate history of NC's most illustrious brigade.......2002-07-15

Lee's Tar Heels is a superb narrative of one of North Carolina's premier brigades in the Civil War. Author Earl Hess delivers a very readable and interesting account of the brigade, which included the 11th, 26th, 44th, 47th, and 52nd NC regiments. Hess draws on a large number of period resources, including some priceless accounts from brigade members, some of whom did not survive to see the war's end.

The book basically covers the entire history of the brigade, from its early days participating in the relatively small skirmishes and battles of Eastern NC, until its true baptism of fire at Gettysburg, in which it suffered appalling casualties and gained immortal glory. One thing I liked about the book is the consistency with which he covers all the regiments of the brigade, and not just the more famous 26th NC. It would be easy to have written a book on the 26th, with scant reference to the other equally deserving member regiments, but Hess never fails to present the brigade as a whole.

He also tells of a number of interesting side stories, including devoting much space to the famous Moravian band which travelled with the regiment. He talks about the Quaker members of the brigade, who were caught up in a situation they hated, yet earned the sympathy of their fellow soldiers. Each aspect of the brigade history is presented in a readable way, including discussions on desertion, camp life, and politics.
He also talks a great deal about the three leaders of the brigade; Pettigrew, Kirkland, and McRae. He is candid about each of their leadership styles, including any blunders they may have perpetrated, but he is quick to come to their defense when he feels it is warranted. One thing I was impressed with was the natural talent that the last commander, William McRae, exhibited. If not for the end of the war, he surely would have gone on to be a fine division commander.

Hess also addresses the post-war controversy over the blame for the failure of Pickett's charge between North Carolina and Virginia. Several prominent Virginia newspapers printed accounts of the Tarheel's actions at Gettysburg that were biased and inaccurate. There is a whole chapter on "After the War", which deals with the efforts of various members of the brigade to rectify the incorrect accusations of the Virginians, and to accord the brigade the credit it was due. He also writes about the eventual fate of many of the soldiers you come to know through the reading of the book, some of whose stories are absolutely fascinating.

This brigade was present at pretty much every large battle of the ANV from Gettysburg until the end of the war, including a number of smaller engagements which are generally overlooked. It gained a reputation for hard fighting, and was often used in situations where extreme measures were called for. Hess writes about them with an obvious enthusiasm, but never loses his objectivity. I will have to admit, this is the first brigade history I have ever read, but I cannot imagine it gets much better than this. If you enjoyed the book he co-wrote on Pea Ridge, I think you will find this one just as good, maybe even better. I simply cannot recommend it highly enough.

    Book Description

North Carolina contributed more of her sons to the Confederate cause than any other state. The 37th North Carolina, made up of men from the western part of the state, served in famous battles like Chancellorsville and Gettysburg as well as in lesser known engagements like Hanover Courthouse and New Bern.

This is the account of the unit's four years' service, told largely in the soldiers' own words. Drawn from letters, diaries, and postwar articles and interviews, this history of the 37th North Carolina follows the unit from its organization in November 1861 until its surrender at Appomattox. The book includes photographs of the key players in the 37th's story as well as maps illustrating the unit's position at several engagements. Appendices include a complete roster of the unit and a listing of individuals buried in large sites such as prison cemeteries. A bibliography and index are also included.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent regimental history.......2006-02-20

Michael Hardy has written a detailed and fascinating account of the 37th North Carolina in the Civil War. It is especially good in its use of first-hand sources - letters, diaries, etc. - of the soldiers who served in the unit. Formed in the late summer of 1861, the 37th participated in most of the major campaigns in the eastern theatre, beginning at New Bern and continuing through Gaines Mills, Second Manassas, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, and Petersburg to Appomattox. Hardy traces the whereabouts and actions of the unit in rich detail, sometimes on a day-to-day basis, which is especially useful while they were on the march. In addition to their battlefield actions, Hardy provides a complete roster of the 37th by company and a list of all the unit's courts-martial during the war. The book is an excellent history of the 37th and a useful reference source as well. And Hardy's generous use of the soldiers' words themselves make for very interesting reading. The book is another excellent addition to the many regimental histories published by McFarland in the last half-dozen years or so.

    5 out of 5 stars Michael Hardy's 37th.......2006-01-30

Michael Hardy is the consummate writer- he does his research-in depth, collects his material-much of it first-hand, then writes a book that is a cross between a textbook and a biography. I,too, am descended from men who were in the 37th NC of whom I knew nothing before I read this book. Now I do.

Even if you are not related, this book is excellent reading in order to understand how and why young men from rural western NC were willing to risk it all for a cause they did not all support. This is a tremendous book and a great read.

5 out of 5 stars a must for anyone interested in the civil war.......2005-08-10

this was a great written book ,i had relatives that served in company E of the 37th nc and it was great getting to know there effords in supporting the southern cause.i suggest this book for anyone.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent read!.......2005-02-23

This book is loaded with in-depth research and provides a well written history on the 37th. My great-great Grandfather served in Company H and it has been a pleasure to learn of his exploits.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!.......2003-08-14

My husband and I are reading this book at present. His great-great-grandfather was in the 37th NC Infantry of the CSA, and this book helps bring to life what these soldiers endured. From the beginning of the War to the end, anyone who reads this account will be moved. The book is very well-researched and is very detailed. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about the experience of a Confederate soldier.

This collection profiles the people who helped shape life in North Carolina in the twentieth century. It includes 160 biographical sketches of Tar Heels who made a difference, highlighting their accomplishments in the areas of agriculture, the arts, business, education, law, media, politics, popular culture, public service, religion, social movements, and sports.

Some of those profiled are familiar because of their prominence in public life--Thomas Wolfe, John Hope Franklin, Doris Betts, Jesse Helms, Doc Watson, and Richard Petty, for example. Others are less well known today but made contributions that deserve to be remembered: James E. Shepard, founder of what is now North Carolina Central University; Ellen Winston, the first U.S. Commissioner of Welfare; and former state Supreme Court Justice Henry Frye, the first African American elected to the General Assembly in the twentieth century. All had a hand in shaping North Carolina between 1900 and 2000, a period during which the state emerged from the aftermath of the Civil War and became a model for development and progressive movements across the South.
