Book Description
Often defined by the familiar images of taciturn Yankees, town meetings, maple syrup, and rocky seacoasts, New England is both a distinctively American place and a distinctive place within America. Yet these images present only one aspect of the richly varied region that is New England in the twenty-first century. Today traditional scenes of white-clapboard buildings surrounding an idyllic village green, hillside farms, and red-brick mills rub shoulders with advanced research centers, nuclear power plants, and urban neighborhoods of immigrants from around the globe.
In entries written by leading authorities in the field, The Encyclopedia of New England presents a comprehensive view of this important region, past and present. Both authoritative and entertaining, this single-volume reference will be an invaluable resource for the scholar and an irresistible pageturner for the browser.
The Encyclopedia contains
• 1,300 alphabetically arranged entries examining significant people, places, events, ideas, and artifacts
• Fascinating and little-known facts that rarely appear in history books
• More than 500 illustrations and maps
• Contributions from nearly 1,000 distinguished scholars and writers, including journalists, academics, and specialists from museums, industries, and historical societies
• 1.5 million words in 22 thematic sections, ranging from agriculture to tourism, each with an introduction by a leading specialist in the field
• Extensive cross-references and a full index

If You Love New England, You Will Love This Encyclopedia!.......2007-02-11
Though organized a bit unconventionally "New England. the Culture and History of an American Region" is a wonderful addition to the growing number of State and regional encyclopedias being published in the United States.
An independent America owes much to New England for the region's political and military leaders, indeed much of its population, played a seminal role in this country's fight for independence. Massachusetts alone provided more fighting men to the Continental Army and more private fighting ships than any other colony. And the region's culture is at the core of America's.
Entries in this encyclopedia are organized into twenty-two major categories, beginning with "Agriculture" and ending with "Tourism". They illuminate not only the history, but everyday life in modern New England. Most entries end with suggestions for further reading.
The result is a wonderfully compiled and written single-volume that addresses every imaginable aspect of life in new England.
Best of all, the volume is available from Amazon for about half the price being charged at most retail book stores.
If you love New England, you will love this encyclopedia!
A textbook in disguise.......2006-11-10
I am from New England and was looking forward to receiving this book. It reads like a textbook and is incredibly boring. Don't waste your money!
The Encyclopedia of New England.......2005-10-19
This is a great reference but, unlike many others, it is not simply a list of things with discussion. It is written as a carefully woven story of New England. It is fascinating and wonderful to read.
Review from SeaCoast NH website.......2005-09-28
"Finally, a book that defines New England. And it wasn't easy. Just released, this massive volume weighs as much as our cat. It includes 1.5 million words in 22 thematic sections, written and edited by hundreds of experts. "The Encyclopedia of New England" includes 1,300 entries on important people, places, events, ideas and artifacts, plus 500 illustrations and maps on a total of almost 1,600 pages.
Edited by Burt Feintuch and David H. Watters (both from UNH), this reference of New England culture includes an introduction by poet Donald Hall. New England, as you will soon see, is much more than white steeples, stone walls and maple syrup." (from Seacoast NH website)

Great resource on the Grail Lore.......2003-11-21
Ronan Coghlan has done a who's who on Grail Lore, with wonderful illustrations by Courtney Davis. Very readable, it lists all the characters surrounding Arthur and the myths and legends legends of the Knight of the Round Table. Coghlan is the Author of other useful books, Dictionary of Irish Myths and Legends and Irish Christian Names. Just not a list of people with a footnote of who they were, he fully references the listing with other writers of fiction and history.
So not only is this a super reference to Grail lore is a good interface in history as well.
It also covers places as well as people. Highly recommended for all Grail Library.
An amazing collection..........2000-12-02
King Arthur has always been of interest to me, and I happened upon this book on sales table and just had to buy it. Little did I know that for hours I'd have my face stuck in it...this book is no less than excellent, a great collection of Arthurian stories from different points of view in alphabetical order. A great reference and an awesome book for people interested in learning more about Arthur ;)
Everything you need to know about King Arthur (Almost).......1998-07-15
If this system allowed me to give 4-1/2 stars, that's probably where I would actually have come down. This reference source is magnificent. Coghlan includes names from often obscure and/or hard to find Arthurian legends, and he notes his sources. My only complaints is that he does not say where in his sources he found the name (so sometimes you have to go on a bit of a scavenger hunt), he's missed a couple of rare sources I wish he'd included, and he does not cite instances of the names outside Arthurian material (which is sometimes important). Other than that, this is a reference work of the highest quality.
Book Description
When outsiders think of Vermont, they conjure up images of pumpkin picking against a backdrop of stunning fall foliage, skiing the Green Mountains in wintertime, harvesting maple syrup in mud season, and canoeing on Lake Champlain in the summer. Ethan Allen comes to mind, as do Robert Frost, Norman Rockwell, Calvin Coolidge, and, more recently, James Jeffords. Other Vermont touchstones include Ben & Jerry's, Holstein cows in hillside pastures, and tranquil village greens featuring a single white church. This is romantic Vermont, a place that seems to have changed little since it joined the union in 1791.
In reality, Vermont is much more complex. It is a place of dramatic contrasts, with a rich and provocative history. First a contested frontier region and then an independent republic, Vermont eventually became one of the most politically conservative states while gaining a reputation for innovation in areas such as the production of machine tools. Although agriculture was its mainstay, Vermont became famous for its high-grade marble and granite and, later, for the development of skiing, now one of its most important economic activities.
Beginning in the 1950s, Vermont became a mecca for enterprising individuals from other parts of the country whose alliance with native-born Vermonters gradually changed the state into a liberal political bastion. Active in the preservation of the good life through conservation and land management, Vermonters also pioneered the legal recognition of gay relationships. The state has preserved such civic forms as the town meeting and the citizen legislature while also providing a welcome for environmentally sound new industries and start-up businesses.
Most existing encyclopedias on Vermont were published more than seventy years ago. The Vermont Encyclopedia's thousand-plus entries, the work of 140 contributors, present a completely up-to-date and comprehensive collection of information on the Green Mountain State. Drawn from the most recent research available, its subjects range from prehistoric settlement to events in today's headlines. Entries include famous and infamous Vermonters, features of the physical landscape; political, economic, and social history; organizations like the 251 Club; and tidbits on nudism, the Wasp (the only car ever made in Vermont), the fabled fur-bearing trout, and the invention of the jogbra.
Four topical essays introduce the volume. These treat the geography, climate, and natural history of the state; offer an account of settlement from precolonial times to the present; analyze and discuss contemporary features of Vermont's demography, commerce, and culture; and describe the evolution and current structure of the Vermont Constitution as well as state, county and municipal government. The essays are followed by the individual entries, arranged alphabetically. Supplemented by charts, maps, and photographs, The Vermont Encyclopedia will serve as the quintessential guide to the Green Mountain state for years to come.

Book Description
The Red Sox Encyclopedia is the definitive reference book on the proud history of one of Major League Baseball's oldest and most storied franchises. Notwithstanding the infamous "Curse of the Bambino, " the Red Sox story is a matter of pride and achievement, and of pleasure and excitement. The entire 20th century of Red Sox baseball, including details about Boston's exciting playoff team of 1999, is thoroughly reviewed. Highlights of the book include a complete description of the greatest games, a chronology of the franchise's memorable events, biographies of more than 300 of Boston's all-star players, a complete statistical review, and nearly 300 photos of Red Sox legends and magic moments. The second edition of The Red Sox Encyclopedia will be a valuable edition to baseball fans' reference library, especially those in New England.
Customer Reviews:
Ooppss!.......1999-12-16
The author commits more errors here than Don Buddin. And the photographic reproductions are of newspaper quality at best. A disappointment.
More Errors Than Sox Collapses.......1999-11-16
This book is an embarrassment to both the publisher and author - full of historical and typographical errors. A major disappointment.
a must for any serious Red Sox fan of any age!!.......1999-09-08
Redmount has covered a long history of the Boston Red Sox comprehensively and correctly. This book will settle arguements about stats, players, events involved with this remarkable organization. Its fun to read and fact-packed.
Buy something else - anything else.......1999-08-06
This book is a total hatchet job. Both publisher and author should be embarrassed. It contains so many errors, it is useless. This is the perfect example of a book published soley because if the put the name of the Red Sox on something, some baseball fans will buy anything.
I love this book.......1999-06-06
I am one of the red sox's biggest fans and this book was very informative...Go Pedro!!! I didn't know a lot of things about the red sox, i just looked at the presant and ignored the past. This opened my eyes to the real Friendly Fenway Park. I hate the Yankees!!!!

I expected really more.......2007-03-25
Up to me a book called fly pattern Encyclopedia can't miss most famous patterns. Many of the flies differs only slightly in colors and seems to be tyed to amaze and catch fishermen more than fish.
Patterns.......2007-01-04
I have been told that there are about 4,978,350 patterns out there give or rake one or two. This book is a good start. Hip hip hurrah to the FFF and in particular to AL Beatty for getting this book out.
A good source for new ideas!.......2003-09-02
This is a book I got on a whim at the local fly shop. What I like is it showcases patterns from a lot of people who are excellent tiers, but do not have the name recognition of a Jack Dennis or Mike Lawson. The pictures and recipes are all first rate and for the average tier more than enough to put the fly together. The patterns are fresh with alot of new ideas. This is a book that would go well with the Fly patterns of Umpqua Feather Merchants book as a fly tying recipe book. Personally I think you will like this book a great deal.

One of the best Witchcraft books ever written!.......2000-12-07
If you are lucky enough to find this book, don't pass it by! Although this is a book of Traditional Witchcraft (the Craft before Gardner created his own tradition), and not Wicca, this book can be of great use to either. This is a book of seasonal magick and celebration, not a how-to manual on Witchcraft. Ms. Slade takes you through the celebration of the eight major seasonal holidays, and two more celebrated in her Tradition. (Michaelmas and Midsummer, which she celebrates as a seperate holiday from the summer solstice) For each holiday, she explains the meaning and folklore behind each holiday, magic, animals and herbs associated with it and some of the most beautiful nature photography I've ever seen to set the mood. This is not a book for the newbie Witch. You must already have an understanding of the religion, history and ritual of Witchcraft... especially for the Wiccan student. While most of the lines between Wicca and pre-Gardnerian Witchcraft are blurry or nonexistant, there are a few differences pointed out in this book that can cause some confusion.Over all, I highly recommend this wonderful book... For traditionalists who wish to enrich their practices and for Wiccans to reach a better understanding of the roots of their religion.I found my copy at a close-out bookstore warehouse and I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not having bought an extra copy.

It's great bathroom reading, it's the gardener's best friend, it's the amateur meteorologist's favorite publication.... it's The Old Farmer's Almanac, dishing out timely advice every year since 1792. One early issue described the almanac's mission: "We must strive always to be useful, but with a pleasant degree of humor." The 1998 version of this handy little book fulfills that goal admirably, with everything you always expected to find in an almanac--from long-range weather forecasts to the best time to plant peas--and lots that you didn't, including how to hypnotize a frog. (Hint: make little circling motions with your hand.) There's even a "Millennium Countdown" section, with questions from the Old Farmer's Almanac of 100 years ago as well as instructions on opening champagne bottles safely.
Book Description
A new edition of the annual reference furnishes long-range weather forecasts, tide tables, agricultural tips, predictions on Consumer Tastes and Trends, astronomical data, recipes, history, and lore, how-to advice, and more. Softcover.

Book Description
The most comprehensive book ever written on the history of the NBA's most storied franchise, The Boston Celtics Encyclopedia should be included in every sports fan's library. Written in a unique, easy-to-read style, the Celtics Encyclopedia brings to life the exploits of such Celtic legends as Larry Bird, Bill Russell, Red Auerbach, Kevin McHale, John Havlicek, and Bob Cousy. In addition to individual profiles, there are also detailed sketches about all 16 of the Celtics' world championships. All the stories, all the trivia, all the statistics -- there isn't anything left out of this book.
Customer Reviews:
If you are a Celtic fan don't buy this book.......2006-12-30
Despite being from Basque Country, Europe, i've been a big Celtic fan since 1985-86, when i was a child and became watching on tv the greatest team my eyes have ever seen. In the following years, despite all the sufferings, i've continue being a big fan, and tough i'm from Vitoria, where plays one of the greatest team in Europe, a team where have played for example Calderon, Nocioni, Macijauskas and right now are playing future NBA players like Scola and Splitter, my only team are the Celtics.
I bought this book despite knowing all the history of the Celtics, but i thought that it would be interesting to have all it in a book ordered and with nice photos and stats.
So when i put my hands on the book, i was pretty happy. The encyclopedia looked serious, with chapters embracing all the Celts history, with a lot of images ( in black and white, only 8 pages of the book are in colour, in the middle of the book ), a lot of stats, description of the Hall of Famers, other Celtic important players....
The problem started when i began to read the book. I don't mind that the writter won't be a diehard Celtic fan. Is an encyclopedia, so i expect objective facts wrote without passion. The problem is that the writer wrotes with passion, but with ANTICELTIC passion. Yes friends, Peter C. Bjarkman is the most Anticeltic person you could ever know, specially AntiBird era, and he has wrote a Celtic Encyclopedia, for the money, of course. The stupidities start soon; for example, he accuses Red Auerbach of be a racist ! Ok, you will say, sure he will have a lot of information about this unknown fact, no? No. His only proof is so surrealistic that you will understand by this guy is so pathetic. Red said one time that if he would have to pick a player to build a champion team, he would chose Larry Bird. Ok, maybe you would pick Magic, Russell, Jordan, Chamberlain... Maybe Jabbar... But is very clear that Larry, the most complete player of the NBA history along with Magic Johnson, is one of the clear choices. But for our writer, this Red's afirmation is so stupid, that this proves that is a racist, because for him is so obvious that Russell was a much better player that the only reason to not chose him proves that Red, the person that give Russell the opportunity to became the first black coach in NBA, is a racist. Unbelievable. Of course his ration of garbage don't finish here. He also says that any person would choose Robertson (?), Wilt or Jordan and not Bird. Then he continues his AntiCeltic attacks saying that " The Big Three " (almost unanimously considered the best frontcourt that has ever played the game ), isn't by any means the best. He cites the Minneapolis Lakers frontcourt of the beginning of the 50s, one in which played Mikan, and his main reason is that they won 5 NBA championships. Yes, but quantity and quality are equal terms? Of course not. In that era, there were only 10 teams in the league, the clock possession doesn't existed, and the basketball average level of play was quite low.
He continues his attacks saying that the '86 Celts, considered by all the experts to be the greatest team ever along with the '87 Lakers, isn't the greatest Celt team. He says that the 60's Celts were a better team.... Well, i don't know if in the 1985-86 season you were in coma or watching only the Bulls games, but any person that watched that level of play knows that that team was probably the best team ever. I will die and that 50-1 record at home will continue unbreakable.
The conclusion i reached after reading all the book is that the writer hates the Bird Celtics. He tries to minimize the importance of Bird in the develop of the NBA, the excellence of that team, and most pathetic, he forgets that he is writing a book that surely only Celtics fans will buy, and tries to convince the reader that his anticeltic statements are the only truth. For all of this, if you are a diehard Celtic fan, i don't recommend this book, you will feel hurt.

TONS OF INFO AND PHOTOS.......2006-12-11
THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ALL CELTIC AND BASKETBALL FANS. THIS BOOK COVERS THE HISTORY OF THE CELTICS UP TO 2002. IT HAS SO MUCH INFO AND STATS IT WILL TAKE AWHILE TO GET THROUGH THE WHOLE THING. IT IS ALSO A GREAT BOOK TO USE OVER AND OVER AGAIN TO CHECK YEAR TO YEAR STATS OF EVERY CELTIC WHO EVER PLAYED. ALSO HAS EVERY SEASON TO SEASON COVERAGE AND ANALYSIS AND A GREAT COLLECTION OF PHOTOS OF OWNERS, PLAYER AND BROADCASTERS. A MUST FOR ALL CELTIC FANS.
I still can't believe that which I saw for myself ...........2006-11-19
... during the Golden Era of American professional sports, 1955-70, featuring it's greatest, most hard-nosed performer (Bill Russell) and its greatest, most successful statesman (Red Auerbach). Plus a few other "pretty good" players .... my memory is fading but I do remember a couple of last names starting with "H" and a couple of them starting with "J."
As a sports-hungry kid back then, I was a Jerry West fan but the Celtics were so damn good I actually thought them to be cheating.
Though in hindsight I guess I was really a "Celtics fan in Lakers clothing" because I have finally admitted after all these years that things turned out just the way they were supposed to.
Too bad we didn't have the video technology back then that have today; in which case I would be watching tapes of the Old Celtics 24/7 .... starving, but very, very happy.
At any rate the NBA, at the very least, will never be the same.
Great info for Celtic-Nation.com.......2003-10-23
