Customer Reviews:
Very entertaining book. .......2007-01-18
This is a very entertaining book. Good for a coffee table type book.
Massive NYC Info..Accessible andUnique!.......2005-12-06
Looking for very old maps of the Big City, the Mayoral and Presidential elections, Capsules of about every neighborhood in all 5 boroughs, histories of Broadway, Wall Street, MidTown, Columbia and NYU, the New School, and every other educational institution. Music from Classical to Jazz to Pop to Rock (but there is no listing for Sinatra! I think there should be.)How about the incredible skyscapers, docks, restaurants, clubs. And all this goes back to 1624, when the Dutch first settled. And sections on about every leading NYC personality ever. (though for some reason Mantle and Dimaggio are not listed separately, amoung many other famous NYC sports stars ). Even though the book is 10 years old, it is about as timeless as you can get, even with my very few small quibles mentioned!
Fantastic!.......2005-10-24
If there was anything you ever wanted to know about NYC but couldn't find the answer, this book will have it. What an amazing treasure trove of history, information and trivia. This book should be in every library in America.
The ultimate book about the greatest city in the world!.......2005-10-24
As a person who has visited New York several times, this is the book that has everything you need to know about the world's greatest city! The people, the neighborhoods and the interesting tidbits that make it a wonderful place! Highly recommended reading!!
Settle all bets around the dinner table........2004-07-03
This tome, as I like to think of it, is spectacular in it's scope. It covers everything from hospitals that have long since closed, to details about the city's aqueduct water transportation system. You usually go to the book, in order to look up a specific piece of information, but spend hours perusing entries you never heard of and discovering things about America's largest city that make you gasp. If you live in New York, get this book. It holds an essential place on any New Yorker's bookshelf.

Broadway Musicals: The 101 Greatest Shows of All Time
ASIN: 0786422440 |
Book Description
On March 31, 1943, the musical Oklahoma! premiered and the modern era of the Broadway musical was born. Since that time, the theatres of Broadway have staged hundreds of musicalssome more noteworthy than others, but all in their own way a part of American theatre history.
With more than 750 entries, this comprehensive reference book provides information on every musical produced on Broadway since Oklahoma's 1943 debut. Each entry begins with a brief synopsis of the show, followed by a three-part history: first, the pre-Broadway story of the show, including out-of-town try-outs and Broadway previews; next, the Broadway run itself, with dates, theatres, and cast and crew, including replacements, chorus and understudies, songs, gossip, and notes on reviews and awards; and finally, post-Broadway information with a detailed list of later notable productions, along with important reviews and awards. An appendix lists musicals of interest that fall outside this work's parameters (i.e., only musical shows produced on traditionally defined Broadway). Indexed by song title and personnel for quick and easy reference.
Customer Reviews:
A MUSICAL THEATRE FANS' MUST HAVE BOOK.......2006-05-04
This massive volume showcases just about every production to hit the Broadway stage in the last sixty years-each production has a brief synopsis of plot-tryout problems-backstage squabbles-cast listings-musical numbers used in each production and even songs deleted before the shows' opening-the length of the run and profit or loss-and every show that has had mutiple revivals-the info on the revival or revivals follows the original production section. This is not a book that can be read in a short period of time but is so well presented the reader can always pick it up turn to any page and find some wonderful tidbit. the only drawbacks is the bulky gargantuan size of the book, the gargantuan price,no photos and the teeny-weeny print. but then if the print was larger you would probably need a fork-lift to carry the book-forget the size-forget the price- forgive the lack of photos-this book is a must.
Book Description
Finally, a book as glorious as its subject: this lush showcase for everyone who loves musicals covers the 101 most influential, popular, and enduring Broadway shows--all of which have toured the country and been performed in theatres large and small everywhere. Four or five beautifully reproduced photographs from each show--the majority never before published--accompany the text and make the shows leap off the page. Appendices and special features include cast albums, poster artists, revivals, guilty pleasures, Off-Broadway musicals, notable flops, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing info.......2007-08-24
Wonderfully researced by people who love musical theatre--brief paragraphs of backstage and unknown situations behind the scenes-- a must for the musical theatre "groupie"
As big as Broadway !.......2007-08-21
What a wonderful book. Over 330 pages in this oversized tome chock full of pictures. Maybe some would disagree about which shows belong in a list of the 101 greatest Broadway musicals, but the authors have done a great job here. Each of the shows is broken down to details (opening date, number of performances, cast of characters, actors, synopsis, songs etc), wih several photographs for each. Also included are features on some of the key people involved, plus special sections on "Flops", "Star Turns", "Off Broadway", etc. This would fit well into the collection of any lover of Broadway musicals and would make an awesome gift.
Great for all it does........2007-07-08
There's an old show business maxim: Always leave 'em wanting more. This book is so good at what it does I only wish it had gone further -- shows like "New Faces of 1952", "The Girl Friend" and "The Boy Friend". Admittedly one can find references to them in other reviews and they weren't the blockbusters most of the included shows were. But, hey, it is great fun to read and why fret that it fell slightly short of my personal concept of perfection?
Great Book, but still...............2007-05-08
wish that some of my favorites were included:
Oliver
Miss Saigon
Sunset Boulevard
Man of La Mancha.
I really think it is sad that these aren't included, especially Man of La Mancha.
Broadway Musicals: The 101 Greatest Shows.......2007-01-14
This was a gift for a Broadway buff. She loved the book, but was a little disappointed that "Rent" wasn't one of the shows included.

Book Description
The product of nine-years' research by New York State Museum curator Geoffrey N. Stein, The Motorcycle Industry in New York State is the first book to focus on the over one-hundred year history of motorcycle construction in the Empire State. Here you'll encounter the work of Glenn Curtiss, George and Percy Pierce, William Schack, John Glas, Edwin Thomas, Willis Ives, Carl Neracher, Leigh Evans and John Taylor among hundreds of other dreamers, designers and developers. You'll encounter the Emblem, Neracar, Monarch, Reliance, Yankee, DeLong, Marvel, Militaire and Rugmobile among other ordinary and extraordinary motorcycles.
And here you'll learn the mostly short but sometimes extended histories of such concerns as the Autoped Company of America, the Kiefler Motor Works and the Merkel Motor Wheel Company.
Beginning with the experimental motorized bicycles of the 1890s, the encyclopedia records as well, the golden years for the development of mass-produced motorcycles in the 1900s and 1910s. The work recounts the decline of the industry as the public adopted the automobile for everyday transportation. And it reports the recent renaissance of construction as a cottage industry, producing custom motor-cycles in small shops from Long Island to Grand Island.
Customer Reviews:
Can't believe I'm the first to review this..........2007-04-28
I'm absolutely, positively NOT an expert on this topic. I'm interested in the topic for its own sake, and I'm also interested in cultural and environmental factors that foster creativity. I have kept this book in my car for the last couple weeks, and I find myself reading a passage or two here and there. I've been reading it along with Abdul-Jabbar's recent book. There are quite a few books out there on the Harlem Renaissance, and the last 100 years of African-American history. I'm not familiar with most of them.
Here's why I loved THIS book.
The writing is superb. The passages are about 1-4 pages each, and they confront the reader with the snap, crackle and pop of concise, crisp journalistic prose. The authors have a knack for deepening knowledge while causing the reader to want to know even more about the topic. The portraits tend to be descriptive without being judgmental, which adds credibility to the passages and force to the general topic. At the same time, the authors seem psychologically savvy, providing internally consistent life histories in many instances. There's a phenomenal amount of information here about remarkable people and places. The scholarship appears to be quite good, with helpful references following each passage.
This review is a work in progress, so stay tuned.
Book Description
This ultimate book for the Yankee fan includes every player who ever played for the Yankees even for a single at bat, every statistic--both career and with the Yankees--and every important moment in Yankee history making this the most thorough and eclectic look at the team of Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, and Jeter ever published. Fascinating stories, lists and biographies offer a complete and insightful overview of the team through its history. All the vital numbers that baseball obsessives covet are here, from the number of stolen bases Queenie O'Rourke nabbed in 1908 (4), to the total homers Babe Ruth gave up during his years as a pitcher (10), to the number of strikeouts Catfish Hunter earned in 1975 (177). More than just an incredible collection of baseball numbers, this Yankees tribute reminds fans of blockbuster trades, great players who got away, notable accomplishments by some un-notable Yankee players, and more.
Stats include:
POSITION PLAYERS:
Year, Games played,
At Bats, Batting Average, Slugging, Average, Hits, Doubles, Triples, Homeruns, Homerun Percentage, Runs, Runs Batted In, Strikeouts, Stolen Bases, Caught Stealing, Hit by Pitch, Errors, Fielding Percentage and more.
PITCHERS:
Year, Starts, Wins, Losses, Earned Runs, Earned Run Average, Games Played, Innings Pitched, Hits Allowed, Strikeouts, Bases on Balls, Shutouts, Wins in Relief, Losses in Relief, Saves, Complete Games, Homeruns Allowed and more.
Customer Reviews:
a must have .......2006-09-17
I refer to this book often. I wish there was a current edition since the stats end in 2000. The stories of the top 100 Yankees are very interesting.
Complete New York Yankees-Total Encyclopedia of the Team.......2004-07-24
Do you have a baseball enthusiast in the house? If so, this work
would make a perfect gift. For each opening day, there is a
description together with the name of the person who threw out the ball on that day. Complete batting statistics are provided together with the major positions and accompanying players. This book would put you in a preferred position to quote valuable statistics-no matter how remote or obscure. The dynamics of the competition between Gehrig and DiMaggio is depicted for the few seasons that they played together. The work is a must read for the baseball enthusiast in your house. It is a solid value for the price charged. The research alone would be very costly to
replicate, if you had the time to make an honest attempt.
Pass.......2003-07-07
Pass on this book. Although not everyone can tour Yankee Stadium and ask any question they like (and get very good answers), I expected a lot when I looked at the table of contents for the first section. Unfortunately, the answers are skimpy and insufficient, especially considering that the subtitle claims to be "the total encyclopedia of the team". Not hardly. The latter section of statistics may be useless, dated or just good for historical purposes. I would pass.
Excellent Book... but... lots of statistics...!.......2002-02-24
Really nice book but plenty of Statistics instead of more Yankees history. A great add-on to the stats fan. Great B/W pictures !
Great gift for all yankee fans.......2001-05-23
This great volume has a history of the Yankees, profiles of great players, stories of great moments in team history, etc. It is loaded with trivia and team records. It also has the complete career stats for everyone who has ever worn a Yankee uniform. Even if someone had a great career for another team, if he briefly played for the Yankees, his entire major league stats are included and the stats which pertain to the games he played as a Yankee are printed in bold type. If there was a fairly obscure player who you recall from a Yankee team years ago, his stats are there. This book is loaded with great information and you will spend many enjoyable hours leafing through it.

Book Description
The Encyclopedia of New York State is one of the most complete works on the Empire State to be published in a half-century. In nearly 2,000 pages and 4,000 signed entries, this single volume captures the impressive complexity of New York State as a historic crossroads of people and ideas, as a cradle of abolitionism and feminism, and as an apex of modern urban, suburban, and rural life. The Encyclopedia is packed with fascinating details from fields ranging from sociology and geography to history. Did you know that Manhattan's Lower East Side was once the most populated neighborhood in the world, but Hamilton County in the Adirondacks is the least densely populated county east of the Mississippi; New York is the only state to border both the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean; the Erie Canal opened New York City to rich farmland upstate . . . and to the west. Entries by experts chronicle New York's varied areas, politics, and persuasions with a cornucopia of subjects from environmentalism to higher education to railroads, weaving the state's diverse regions and peoples into one idea of New York State.
Lavishly illustrated with 500 photographs and figures, 120 maps, and 140 tables, the Encyclopedia is key to understanding the state's past, present, and future. It is a crucial reference for students, teachers, historians, and business people, for New Yorkers of all persuasions, and for anyone interested in finding out more about New York State.
Customer Reviews:
The Available Best Resource on New York State!.......2006-12-31
This new and massive volume is the best available resource on New York State!
The encyclopedia covers a wide range of personalities (including four Presidents from the Empire State), organizations, history, art, architecture, sports and anything else connected to New York State. Some of the entries, such as 9-11, are long and extremely comprehensive but all are authoritative, written by a host of scholars and experts.
Those who love New York State, history, and encyclopedias will find this large volume extremely useful and a joy to peruse.
If your library can only afford one definitive guide on New York State, make it THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NEW YORK STATE.......2006-10-15
If your library can only afford one definitive guide on New York State, make it THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NEW YORK STATE, packing in nearly 2,000 pages of over 4,000 entries capturing the entire history of the state and its peoples. Extensive listings cover all aspects of history and culture, including population charts, listings of the arts, colleges, bus lines, events, architecture - virtually anything having to do with the state appears here. Yes, it's a very weighty title - but as a specialty reference acquisition it promises long-lasting interest and nothing on the market compares to its size and scope.

The Encyclopedia of New York State by Eisenstadt.......2005-11-26
This is an extensive compendium of New York State history going back at least 400 or more years. The volume describes the early political subdivisions; such as, Heenstede or Hempstead and
Beverwijck/Albany. The original land companies are set forth.
i.e. the Niagara reserve, Massachusetts reserve and Totten purchase. A strength of this work is that the information content
would difficult to research individually. This encyclopedia has
much information in a highly centralized/abbreviated form.
The beginnings of industry are discussed; such as Goldsmithing.
Land topology is set forth. This discussion includes the geology of New York together with classic plate changes and movements. Famous counties and citizens of New York are named together with early baseball teams; such as the Diamond Dogs,Nolands and Senators. Historic lighthouses are described
in detail. These include Crossover Island, Dunkirk, Fort Niagara,
Rock Island, Horseshoereef and Stonypoint.
This acquisition would be invaluable for any librarian, historian, journalist or student project on the subject of N.Y.S.
It is reasonably priced for the information content provided.
Whew!.......2005-10-24
There can be little about New York State that is not covered in some way in this book. The state would prbably not even exist without NYC but as this book clearly points out, it is so much more than just that city. Yes, the immigrants arrived in NYC, but then they traveled up the Hudson River and on westward over the Mohawk River into the wilderness called the Louisiana Purchase that would become the heartland of America and on to the silver fields of Colorado and gold mines of California. The sweep of history that occurred across the vastness that is "upstate NY" helps to explain how the United States became what it is today. And here too is all you could ever want to know about "America's largest island": Long Island, with its millionaire sanctuaries, stunning beaches, and cookie-cutter bedroom communities. And, incongruously, until very recently one of the most vibrant fishing and farming areas east of the Mississippi. What an amazing tale this book tells!
extraordinary.......2005-07-23
This book is an excellent source for researchers of topics relating to the history of New York state. It should be in every home library and in every library's reference collection. As well as a browser's delight, it is a book that provides cohesive basic coverage of each topic included, so that a student can master the essays and then broaden his/her research to complete the investigation of a specific application of that topic, i.e, to localize it.
A gem!
