This is a must for every real White Sox fan.
Unfortunately, no color photos but the resarch and format are excellent.

Awesome book for the Sox lover. Great history, stats and world series coverage facts.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding update of 1997's White Sox Encyclopedia.......2006-11-15

I still have my copy of the original White Sox Encyclopedia and over the years I've enjoyed leafing through it and discovering countless facts, figures and items of interest regarding the history of the Chicago White Sox. This worthy update comes hot off the heels of their 2005 World Series championship, and even if you have the original you'll definitely want to have a copy of TOTAL WHITE SOX in your collection. Virtually everything from the original is here (the only items I've noticed that were not carried over are the color memorabilia photographs), and the season-by-season summaries, statistical information and player profiles have been brought up-to-date quite nicely, plus there are many more additional photographs encompassing the nine seasons since the original volume was published.
One word of caution: as much as I love this book, I had to deduct one star from my overall rating. While reading the summary of the 2005 World Series I came across a glaring factual error regarding the final out of the decisive Game 4 (page 532): "Orlando Palmeiro then grounded out UNASSISTED to Paul Konerko, who, for the second time in the post-season, stuffed the souvenir ball into his pocket." The final out was actually a softly hit ball chopped over the head of pitcher Bobby Jenks, shortstop Juan Uribe charged the ball and fired it to first baseman Paul Konerko, enabling the Sox to win their first World Series in 88 years. Considering the magnitude of that final out, I am somewhat surprised that this mistake made its way into print, but that error notwithstanding TOTAL WHITE SOX is a beautiful volume no White Sox fan should be without!

1 out of 5 stars Never received the book........2007-01-11

I was very disappointed that this book was never made available for a avid Cubs fan.

1 out of 5 stars It will never ship.......2006-11-17

I ordered this book on August 23 of this year, I approved delay after delay after delay. Today, November 16, I quit. I don't even like the Cubs, I'm a Cardinals fan--I ordered this as a gift for a birthday--that was in August. If the stupid book isn't available, Amazon should really stop lying about it and just say it's out of stock already. Very, very frustrating--save yourself the angst, and just move on.

5 out of 5 stars A Sad But Noble Story.......2006-02-01

This is not a story about how many times you can get up after failing, this is a story about how many times you can fail and still draw 3 million. It's about a fanbase that's so sentimental and forgiving that they can handle losing as long as there's a good tavern outside the ballpark. We'll always have the 2001 Wild Card victory to keep us warm at night. It's about a fanbase that doesn't forget the contributions of its players even if they aren;t the best role models off the fields. I salute the fans of the Chicago Cubs for their steadfast support of the worst franchise in major league history and I especially salute their marketing department for turning losing into a money-making business. Keep soaking up the sun and beer in the bleachers you delicious fans! And to all you Sox fans, NO ONE cares that you won a World Series -- Big Deal!

5 out of 5 stars Schadenfreude.......2003-10-25

National rumor has it that a favorite saying in Alabama is "Thank God for Mississippi" - the reason being that while Alabama ranks 49th in countless metrics connected to wealth, lack-of-drawl, and general well-being, she can always rely on her still-more-hapless cousin to bring up the rear. In Boston we thank the Holies for the Cubs - the one team that can make us feel like the smug hosts of champions. This is a work of extraordinary detail, featuring exhaustive statistics, biographies, legends, & etc. And although it wasn't written specifically to soothe ruffled Red Sox fans, true students of the team will note than in virtually every topic on offer, the Cubs (and their supporters) are ever so slightly worse off than the benighted denizens of Fenway. Gentile struggles to put a brave face on all of this, but his various upbeat declarations carry all the credibility of a jubilant North Korean government pronouncement. The book's very cover contains a subtle concession of abject defeat in describing the Cubs as "one of the most successful franchises of the 19th century." While the Red Sox hardly ruled the 20th century, at least our championship memories are a decade younger than those of the Wrigley wretches.

Book Description

This book documents and illustrates over 1,000 pieces of china, the Pickard trademarks, and old advertising with color photos and current collector values. It also includes over 150 brief artist biographies, patent information, a bibliography, and the various china associations. All known antique pattern names, as well as popular designs of anonymity are listed, many patterns never before identified. Due to the lack of a source of information on Pickard china, Alan Reed has devoted a decade of research on his own -- through interviews, letters, papers, U.S. Census records, and through other collectors. The history of the other Chicago studios and the artists from the 'golden era' (between 1894 and 1925) of handpainted china are included. 2000 values. REVIEW: Over 800 photos with no repeats from Book I are featured in this collector's guide. It's divided into six collectible categories: early years (1700 - 1875), cabinet cups, nineteenth twentieth century, English bone china, miniatures, and figurals. A marks section, helpful appendix, and bibliography are included, as well as useful tips for dealers and collectors. -Robert Clayton

The American South, it has been said, is the most European of the nation's sections in manner and outlook, distinct enough that it may be reckoned to have its own--slippery term--culture. Its literature, language, climate, economy, cuisine, and history are recognizably different from those of New England and the Midwest, and even today Southerners remember that their homeland was once an independent nation crushed by a foreign military power. These may be justifications enough to warrant this massive regional encyclopedia, although a few questions go a-begging. (What, for instance, would an encyclopedia of American culture writ large contain? Do the mountaineers of Tennessee share a culture with the Gullah-speaking farmers of the South Carolina coast? Just what does culture mean, anyway?) In any case, the editors have assembled a fine roster of contributors who write on sweeping topics--African American life, agriculture, literature, the "mythic South," and the like--elaborated on by short essays on narrower subjects. The book was rightly voted Best Reference Book of 1989 by the American Library Association.

    Book Description

The American South is a geographical entity, a historical fact, a place in the imagination, and the homeland of an array of Americans who consider themselves southerners. The region is often shrouded in romance and myth, but its realities are as intriguing, as intricate, as its legends.

The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture is "the first attempt ever" notes U.S. News & World Report, "to describe every aspect of a region's life and thought, the impact of its history and policies, its music and literature, its manners and myths, even the iced tea that washes down its catfish and cornbread."

There are many Souths, many southerners. The region's fundamental uniqueness, in fact, lies in its peculiar combination of cultural traits, a somewhat curious, often elusive blend created by blacks and whites who have lived together for more than 300 years. In telling their stories, the Encyclopedia of Southern Culture ranges from grand historical themes to the whimsical; from the arts and high culture (William Faulkner and Leontyne Price) to folk culture (quilts, banjos, and grits) to popular culture (Gilley's and Gone With the Wind).

The Encyclopedia's definition of the South is a cultural one: the South is found wherever southern culture is found. Although the focus is on the eleven states of the former Confederacy, this volume also encompasses southern outposts in midwestern and middle-Atlantic border states, even the southern pockets of Chicago, Detroit, and Bakersfield.

To foster a deeper understanding of the South's cultural patterns, the editors have organized this reference book around twenty-four thematic sections, including history, religion, folklore, language, art and architecture, recreation, politics, the mythic South, urbanization, literature, music, violence, law, and media. The life experiences of southerners are discussed in sections on black life, ethnic life, and women's life. Throughout, the broad goal is to identify the forces that have supported either the reality or the illusion of the southern way of life—people, places, ideas, institutions, events, symbols, rituals, and values.

The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture was developed by the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. Contributors to the volume include historians, literary critics, sociologists, anthropologists, geographers, linguists, theologians, folklorists, architects, ecologists, lawyers, university presidents, newspaper reporters, magazine writers, and novelists.

    Book Description

One of the great American metropolises, Chicago rises out of the prairie in the heart of the country, buffeted by winds coming off the plains and cooled by the waters of the inland sea of Lake Michigan. Chicago is a city of size and mass, the cradle of modern architecture, the freight hub of the nation, a city built on slaughterhouses and cacophonous financial trading tempered by some of the finest cultural institutions in the world. While many histories have been written of the city, none can claim the scope and breadth of the long-awaited Encyclopedia of Chicago.

Developed by the Newberry Library with the cooperation of the Chicago Historical Society, The Encyclopedia of Chicago is the definitive historical reference on metropolitan Chicago. More than a decade in the making, the Encyclopedia brings together hundreds of historians, journalists, and experts on everything from airlines to Zoroastrians to explore all aspects of the rich world of Chicagoland, from its geological prehistory to the present.

The main alphabetical section of the Encyclopedia, comprising more than 1,400 entries, covers the full range of Chicago's neighborhoods, suburbs, and ethnic groups, as well as the city's cultural institutions, technology and science, architecture, religions, immigration, transportation, business history, labor, music, health and medicine, and hundreds of other topics. The Encyclopedia has the widest geographical reach of any city encyclopedia of its kind, encompassing eight of the region's counties, including suburbs. Nearly 400 thumbnail maps pinpoint Chicago neighborhoods and suburban municipalities; these maps are complemented by hundreds of black-and-white and color photographs and thematic maps that bring the history of metropolitan Chicago to life. Additionally, contributors have provided lengthy interpretive essays—woven into the alphabetical section but set off graphically—that take a long view of such topics as the built environment, literary images of Chicago, and the city's often legendary and passionate sports culture.

The Encyclopedia also offers a comprehensive biographical dictionary of more than 2,000 individuals important to Chicago history and a detailed listing of approximately 250 of the city's historically significant business enterprises. A color insert features a timeline of Chicago history and photo essays exploring nine pivotal years in this history.

The Encyclopedia of Chicago is one of the most significant historical projects undertaken in the last twenty years, and it has everything in it to engage the most curious historian as well as settle the most boisterous barroom dispute. If you think you know how Chicago got its name, if you have always wondered how the Chicago Fire actually started and how it spread, if you have ever marveled at the Sears Tower or the reversal of the Chicago River—if you have affection, admiration, and appreciation for this City of the Big Shoulders, this Wild Onion, this Urbs in Horto, then The Encyclopedia of Chicago is for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2007-01-17

I bought this book as a Christmas present for my sister off a recommendation and I spent all Christmas morning reading through it. I finally had to order one for myself. A lot of information, but so interesting to learn about. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting guide to learning about Chicago.

5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Chicago.......2007-01-04

Great resource for a FANTASTIC town! I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars The absolute best book on Chicago.......2006-05-10

This book is amazing. It is, by far, the most complete compedium on all things Chicago that there is.
Many of the entries are brief, but some major topics get full essay treatment. The section on architecture is a fantastic introduction to the architectural history of Chicago.

This is an encyclopedia, and therefore it contains information on a huge range of topics, but is not exceptionally detailed. It does provide reference to related topics within the book, and it provides a number of sources for further reading.

The book employees many excellent charts and maps, as well as a very thorough timeline on the history of this city.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves this great city and wants to know more.

5 out of 5 stars everthing you need to know about the great city of chicago.......2006-03-15

Well made book with all the facts about a city I love very much.

5 out of 5 stars Best source for Information regarding Chicago and the surrounding Suburbs!.......2006-02-26

This is a wonderful compulation of information for the avid history fan or an educator within the history field. The book is very well organized and has various maps from different eras. I have to admit that this book was a ten year project by my college Professor Ann D. Keating and her colleagues and that because of this fact I might be inclined to say nothing but good things about the book. The fact is that this is the most complete book that I have ever owned concerning the history of Chicago, and if you can't find it in this book it probably doesn't exist. Happy researching to all those historians out there who want to learn about the Chicago area.

How dominant, how revolutionary, how outsized a presence is Michael Jordan? The answer is found in this comprehensive and attractively illustrated team reference guide on the best players ever to suit up in a Chicago Bulls uniform. The first player profiled--Jordan, of course--gets 30 pages of coverage. The next chapter--the bios of the 11 most distinguished Bulls other than Jordan--is only two pages longer. Still, this is much more than an homage to Michael. The Encyclopedia examines how the team was built and traces its history season by season; records the 16 most memorable moments along the way; analyzes rivalries (Bulls-Lakers '71-'73; Bulls-Pistons '88-'91; and Bulls-Knicks '91-'96); profiles coaches, owners, and announcers; compares the best Bulls seasons to those of other great NBA dynasties; and, as required by the genre, dishes out plenty of stats in all the necessary categories. Unlike most sports references, this one's as pleasing to look at as it is to thumb through. It's got info, but it's also got game. --Jeff Silverman

    Book Description

Typically, other reference works on organized crime in the United States focus primarily on the Mafia and La Cosa Nostra, and neglect the many new ethnic and racial criminal organizations that permeate American society today. This reference fills those gaps while providing systematic detailed coverage of traditional crime families, individuals, significant events, and terms. More than 250 entries provide in-depth information on major underworld figures, from Al Capone to John Gotti and Sammy "the Bull" Gravano, and key criminal events and milestones. In addition, Kelly, an expert on organized crime, provides in-depth coverage of African American organized crime, Chinese Triads and Tongs, the Colombian drug cartels' infiltration of the U.S., Dominican drug trafficking, ecocrime, Russian organized crime, Latin gangs and criminal groups, and Vietnamese American organized crime. Significant events (such as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre) and historical milestones (such as the Apaplachian Meeting) are interwoven with contemporary trends and facts about the new underworlds emerging in American cities. Entries include data on the backgrounds of important and infamous criminals, their nicknames, organizational structure, their criminal careers, and colorful details about their lives. Also included are definitions of key phrases and terms, such as "making your bones," and organization charts of traditional and new organized crime groups. Entries are placed in a social/historical context that clarifies their significance and enables the reader to appreciate the circumstances that shaped the criminal incidents and public response to them. This is the most comprehensive collection of current information on organized crime in the United States ever assembled in one volume and will be a valuable research tool for students and interested readers.

3 out of 5 stars Not Really An Encycolopedia.......2006-06-09

I went and picked up this book from the local library thinking I would browse through it and then decide whether or not to buy. Glad I did this as anybody would be foolish to shell out $75 dollars for this book.

It does have its bright spots. A lot of good reference material, outlines of the familes and groups and short bios of different criminals over the years. It was a usualful took in remembering where different people fit and allowed for easily and quick access to a variety of topics.

However, the material is than less than exciting in reference to other crome books. While it covers a ton of mobsters I was suprised that it didn't include one my favorite characters, Roy Demeo. There were limited pictures in the book espically for what you expected for one as highly priced.

2 out of 5 stars Poor value for the cost and the limited information........2006-05-07

First, this book is not "encyclopedia" in size in terms of either pages or dimensions. After the introduction, acronyms and time line the reader will find 328 pages of information, followed by a limited bibliography and a detailed index. The body of the book largely consists of biographies of deceased mob bosses and henchmen, which are available in more detail in Robert Jay Nash's less expensive reference books on organized crime. The limited unique information available here, and not found elsewhere, would not justify the cost of $75 to most true crime buffs.

THIS IS A GOOD BOOK FOR ALL BULLS FANS. IT GIVES US THE DETAILED HISTORY OF THE BULLS COVERING OWNERS, COACHES, PLAYERS AND BROADCASTERS. IT ALSO HAS MANY MORE HIGHLIGHTS SUCH AS YEAR BY YEAR COVERAGE ALONG WITH A LIST AND STATS OF ALL PLAYERS WHO HAVE WORN THE BULLS UNIFORM. MUCH IS DEDICATED TO AIR JORDAN AND THE DOUBLE 3PEAT SEASONS. THE PHOTOS ARE GOOD AND IT IS WELL WORTH THE PRICE. THE ONLY NEGATIVE THING IS THAT IT IS A BIT REPETITIVE. BUT I RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL BASKETBALL AND BULL FANS.

      Book Description

The Chicago Cubs Encyclopedia presents the touching history of the team that has been without a pennant longer than anyone in the major leagues."Jerome Holtzman knows baseball in general and the Chicago Cubs in particular as well, or better, than anybody who ever sat behind a typewriter in a ballpark. Even more so than most blue-blooded Cubs fans, Holtzman has lived, breathed, and absorbed the calamitous times of the Cubs. The few triumphs and many disappointments leap from the pages as only Jerome can tell it. Unlike most Cubs teams, this book is an easy winner." -Hal McCoy

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but needs a second edition........2000-08-17

This book is great for anyone who loves baseball and the Cubs. It contains a year by year analysis of all Cubs teams, biographies of most of the key players over the years, and information about the various owners, managers and presidents. It is a gold mine of trivia.

However, my biggest disappointment was the numerous typos that were present through out the book, including misspellings. It made this otherwise comprehensive book look like it was hastily put together. I hope that a new edition comes out to correct all of the errors.
