Too many errors and ommissions for an "encyclopedia".......2003-07-01
Accuracy and thoroughness is essential when writing about the Holocaust - or any historical event. Otherwise the writing because fodder for those that deny it ever happened.
I would not rely on this for research. But, it's not bad reading - if you keep that in mind.
Almost all you want to know........2002-10-06

Although most libraries now contain many shelves of books describing various aspects of the Holocaust, comprehensive one-volume histories or reference books on the subject are rare. Thus, The Holocaust Encyclopedia, edited by Walter Lacquer (a modern European historian who has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, and Tel Aviv University, among others), fills an important gap in existing Holocaust literature. His book gathers accessible articles by many of the world's leading Holocaust scholars on the full range of people and places involved, from Adolph Hitler and Gypsies to Russia and the Soviet Union. The articles are complemented by a comprehensive chronology and an excellent bibliographical essay, and by almost 300 illustrations, including maps and photographs. The photographs, by Adam Kaczkowski, are particularly well chosen and designed. Photography's importance in the act of Holocaust remembrance is poignantly understated by Roger Greenspun in his entry on "Cinema and Television," in which he writes, "This was the first great human catastrophe to have so many pictures taken of it." The Holocaust Encyclopedia will become the first stop in the library for high school students wishing to learn about the Holocaust. It will also provide college students and adults with a reliable, authoritative, big-picture perspective on aspects of a genocide that, no matter how fully it is known, will never fully be understood. -- Michael Joseph GrossBook Description
The Holocaust has been the subject of countless books, works of art, and memorials. Fifty-five years after the fact the world still ponders the enormity of this disaster. The Holocaust Encyclopedia is the only comprehensive single-volume work of reference providing both a reflective overview of the subject and abundant detail concerning major events, policy decisions, cities, and individuals. Up-to-date and designed for easy access, the encyclopedia presents information on the major aspects of the Holocaust in essays by scholars from eleven countries who draw on a number of sourcesincluding recently uncovered evidence from the former Soviet blocto provide in-depth studies on the political, social, religious, and moral issues of the Holocaust as well as short entries identifying events, sites, and individuals. The book also has more than 250 photographs, many of them rare, and 19 maps. The volume includes: Raul Hilberg on concentration camps and Gypsies Ruth Bondy, Israel Gutman, and Dina Porat on major ghettoes Roger Greenspun on the Holocaust in cinema and television Richard Breitman on American policy Michael Berenbaum on theological and philosophical responses Saul Friedländer on Nazi policy Michael Hagemeister on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion Michael R. Loaded with useful and educational information.......2004-04-05
Not sure how helpful this is but its packed full o' info........2003-09-27
Nonetheless this large piece of information will be helpful for reference. As a general rule Encyclopedias are pretty much useless outside of research as they appear to be usefull but the reader will gnerally get no happy times or enjoyment out of reading them. I recommend Martin Gilberts 'The Holocaust' as the best and most accesible account of the terrible event.
Far superior to the Rozett 'Encyclopedia of the Holocaust' which is smaller and not as authoritative.
Comprehensive & Authoritative Study On Genocide........2003-09-23
The study declares that anti-Semitism (hatred of the Jews) was a central issue to the intended physical extermination/genocide of the Jews and it is the central topic of this book.
This comprehensive, authoritative one-volume reference provides reliable information on this ignoble and frightening episode of modern history covering an immense number of issues pertaining to the Holocaust, all of which are presented alphabetically for ease of access and reference. Historical essays are also written for each country with a sizable Jewish community.
Such issues addressed are "Holocaust denial", "the Protocols of the Elders of Zion", "Kristallnacht", "Gypsies", "Nazi policy", "British policy" & "medical experimentation" in what is one of the most readable histories of the Holocaust available. My only criticism of this book is that I would have liked more coverage of the Nazi individuals behind the atrocities and horrors so commendably documented here. Although some are included, many are not.
Having said that I would encourage all interested parties to acquire this book if at all possible. As stated, one of the subjects covered is "Holocaust denial" and as survivors become fewer and fewer, possession of such a priceless reference cannot be understated. Thank you.

The Encyclopedia of Jewish Life Before and During the Holocaust
Manufacturer: New York University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0814793789 |
Book Description
"Rich and rewarding, of inestimable value" -Elie Wiesel
"Most of the research and writing on the Holocaust documents the process of destruction and not what was destroyed. The Encyclopedia of Jewish Life Before and During the Holocaust fills that gap, and does so in a comprehensive and exacting fashion. It is a welcome addition." -Deborah E. Lipstadt, Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies Director, Institute for Jewish Studies Emory University
"Based on extensive archival and bibliographic research, the Encyclopedia of Jewish Life Before and During the Holocaust is a major contribution to modern Jewish history. The entries are precise, clear and reliable. The photos are priceless and often rare. This work will be indispensable to scholars and the general public." -Jehuda Reinharz, Richard Koret Professor of Modern Jewish History and President, Brandeis University
New York University Press announces with pride the publication of a remarkable project, The Encyclopedia of Jewish Life before and during the Holocaust. Edited by Dr. Shmuel Spector and the late Dr. Geoffrey Wigoder and published in conjunction with Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Remembrance Authority of Israel, the Encyclopedia represents the fruit of more than three decades of labor and stands as one of the most important and ambitious projects the Press has published. Nobel Peace Prize-winner Elie Wiesel contributed the foreword.
Today throughout much of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, only fragmentary remnants of once thriving Jewish communities can be found as evidence of more than two thousand years of vibrant Jewish presence among the nations of the world. These communities, many of them ancient, were systematically destroyed by Hitler's forces during the Holocaust. Yet each of their stories-from small village enclaves to large urban centers-is unique in its details and represents one of the countless intertwined threads that comprise the rich tapestry of Jewish history.
The Encyclopedia of Jewish Life before and during the Holocaust captures these lost images. In three volumes, it chronicles the people, habits and customs of more than 6,500 Jewish communities that thrived during the early part of the twentieth century only to be changed irrevocably by the war. It clarifies precise locations of settlements based on documents and maps found in recently opened archives; it traces their development through history; it shares small details of everyday life-the culture, the politics, and the faith that inspired the people; and its photographs put faces on the immeasurable loss.
Based on decades of research at Yad Vashem, The Encyclopedia of Jewish Life before and during the Holocaust tells the story of thousands of Jewish communities in concise prose, illustrated with maps and poignant images of a world that can no longer be visited. The Encyclopedia is a rich source of information for students, teachers, genealogists and anyone interested in the pageant of Jewish life through the ages.
From the Foreword
"But the enemy did not only annihilate individuals; his aim was also to destroy our social structures, our economic foundations, religious and secular, our schools, our institutions, our libraries, our workshops, our synagogues, our cultural centers-in a word: our communities.
. . . In the Jewish world one knew a town by its Jewish life. Belz and Munkacs, Bialystok and Amsterdam, Kiev and Lille and Zablotow-offering families and individuals a sense of security and countless opportunities for fulfillment, each community had its own particular characteristics and problems, its roots, its challenges, and its ambitions. . . . To understand the extent of the unprecedented crimes committed against the Jewish people in Europe is not enough; one must also seek to understand the life of this people before the catastrophe." -Elie Wiesel
Features -Three volumes -1,824 pages -81/2 x 11 -More than 6,500 communities profiled -600 b&w photographs and illustrations -17 pages of maps -21-page glossary -Complete bibliography -Index of communities including alternate spellings and pronunciations -Index of personalities

Compelling Memorial.......2003-10-31
There are also photographs, both scattered through the work and in a 56-page In Memoriam section at the end. Unlike another reviewer here, I feel that these photographs are not "wasted space," but necessary to help readers understand and connect with the story contained in the volumes. Humans can only process so many statistics -- our brains simply don't deal well with numbers. By putting a picture, a face, on the brief details in this book, the authors make them more real, more compelling.
This book is highly recommended as resource for those looking for information on the fate of a particular Jewish community, or seeking to understand the scope of Nazi destruction during the Holocaust. The authors are to be commended.

Holocaust Survivors [Two Volumes]: A Biographical Dictionary
Emily Taitz Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0313336768 |
Book Description
Although there are more and more Holocaust memoirs on the market, this essential collection is the first to present such a large number of biographical profiles of survivors for a broad readership. Holocaust Survivors: A Biographical Dictionary comprises 278 entries on more than 500 survivors of the World War II genocide. The profiles, averaging 500 words, are mostly of Jews, both individuals and family members, from throughout Europe. Organized alphabetically, the essays cover their background, circumstances and ordeals during the war, aftermath, and life achievements, including family and career. Most are on ordinary people who have extraordinary life stories. Many stories come from interviews with the survivors by the author. Excerpts from primary documents and quotations are occasionally interspersed. Suggested reading or references per entry are included where possible. Added value comes from an historical introduction, chronology, resource guide, lists of entries, photos, and comprehensive index. The set will be most valuable to high school students and general readers who do not want to read a full-length memoir. There is an intense and continuing demand for these stories. At the high school level, the set will supplement units on genocide and provides valuable distillation for research and reports to meet the World History Standard concerning the Nazi regime and the Holocaust. Some Holocaust survivors speak about their experiences at schools and public forums, and organizations representing such speakers are listed per state. At the college level, the profiles can be used for starting research in Holocaust history courses. The general reader will become familiar with a range of survivor stories and also use this a springboard for further reading. Examples of people profiled: Marie Blum-Albert--Belgian Jew who smuggled hundreds of Jewish children to safety through a hospital for tubercular children and kept many from being transported to Auschwitz. Abraham A. Foxman spent his pre-school years in Lithuania as a hidden child cared for by his Polish nanny who had him baptized as a Catholic and who taught him to hate Jews. Reilli Herchmer--Sinti fugitive who as a young girl delivered messages for the Nazi resistance underground, survived the Ravensbruck camp, and later moved to Denver with her American husband and raised a family. Victor Klemperer--Dresden professor who survived the war and the Allied fire bombing of the city because he was married to a gentile. He kept a secret, meticulous diary, published to acclaim in the 1990s, of their day-to-day existence as conditions deteriorated as the war progressed. Sam Nussbaum--Jewish-Polish plumber whose skills and strength allowed him to survive a Nazi labor camp. Halina Wind Preston was sent to prison after her Polish landlady exposed her for trying to live outside the ghetto and pass as a Christian, escaped from prison, and spent the rest of the war hiding in the sewers of Lvov.Customer Reviews:

The Columbia Guide to the Holocaust

ASIN: 0231112009 |
Book Description
Offering a multidimensional approach to one of the most important episodes of the twentieth century, The Columbia Guide to the Holocaust offers readers and researchers a general history of the Holocaust while delving into the core issues and debates in the study of the Holocaust today.
Each of the book's five distinct parts stands on its own as valuable research aids; together, they constitute an integrated whole. Part I provides a narrative overview of the Holocaust, placing it within the larger context of Nazi Germany and World War II. Part II examines eight critical issues or controversies in the study of the Holocaust, including the following questions: Were the Jews the sole targets of Nazi genocide, or must other groups, such as homosexuals, the handicapped, Gypsies, and political dissenters, also be included? What are the historical roots of the Holocaust? How and why did the "Final Solution" come about? Why did bystanders extend or withhold aid?
Part III consists of a concise chronology of major events and developments that took place surrounding the Holocaust, including the armistice ending World War I, the opening of the first major concentration camp at Dachau, Germany's invasion of Poland, the failed assassination attempt against Hitler, and the formation of Israel.
Part IV contains short descriptive articles on more than two hundred key people, places, terms, and institutions central to a thorough understanding of the Holocaust. Entries include Adolf Eichmann, Anne Frank, the Warsaw Ghetto, Aryanization, the SS, Kristallnacht, and the Catholic Church. Part V presents an annotated guide to the best print, video, electronic, and institutional resources in English for further study.
Armed with the tools contained in this volume, students or researchers investigating this vast and complicated topic will gain an informed understanding of one of the greatest tragedies in world history.

Excellent book, even if out of date.......2003-12-22
Yet another fascinating aspect of the book is that includes many victims of the Nazi regime, such as Walter Gempp, the chief of the Fire Brigade of Berlin.
Overall, the variety and detail of this book is stunning, and I would recommend it for any student of World War II or Third Reich history.
Invaluable reference book to Hitler's Third Reich.......2003-03-11
Apart from Hitler and friends, there are also events and people of the Weimar Republic, such as Paul von Hindenburg, who named Hitler chancellor, as well as Hitler's predecessors, such as Heinrich Bruning, Franz von Papen, and Kurt von Schleicher. After all, Weimar's downfall caused Hitler's rise.
There are also organizational charts throughout, such as the Hierarchy of the NSDAP and the ranks in the Third Reich. This latter entry lists the army ranks of the German Army, and the equivalent ranking in the SS, NSDAP, German Police, and United States Army. For example, a general in the German Army has a rank equal to an SS-Obergruppenfuehrer, a NSDAP Gauleiter, the General der Polizei in the German Police, and a General in the US Army. Tables are also included, such as the list of Gaus (districts) under the third reich and the Gauleiter in charge.
Key conferences and attendees include the Rastenburg Conference, where Hitler and his military advisors were on 20 July 1944, which is the day of the bomb plot, and the Wannsee Conference, where Reinhard Heydrich chaired a meeting detailing the Endlosung or Final Solution.
Many entries are concepts in the original German. So for the entry Night and Fog Decree, it will say See Nacht- Und Nebel Erlass, where the data will be.
Acronyms usual have See the full name. E.g. NSAG. See Nationalsozialistische Arbeitgemeinschaft. Looking up that entry, one will find it's English for National Socialist Working Association. Damn, those Nazis really liked long words, didn't they?
Trial results include that of the Frankfurt Trial, for the chief SS officers at Auschwitz, the Doctor's Trial, for those doctors who experimented on prisoners of war, and of course, the Nuremberg Trials. Each has the defendant, DOB or age, position, verdict and punishment.
As for actual documents, there are Hitler's Last Will and Political Testament. There are also general essays on art, architecture, film and theatre (especially Triumph Of The Will, which has an entry all its own), music, and education. Other things of interest: the lyrics and translation of the Horst Wessel anthem and "Lili Marlene."
At the beginning, there is a chronology of key dates in history, with the exact day. Under 1933, there is an entry January 30. Appointment of Hitler as Chancellor.
I have the 1989 edition, so Albert Speer and Rudolf Hess had died, but according to the book, they are still alive. Why the lack of corrections, especially when the discovery of bones in Brazil in 1985 presumably of Josef Mengele, is listed in the entry for Josef Mengele? Still, a minor quibble in this extremely invaluable reference work on a very infamous period in history.
Any student of the Third Reich will have a definite advantage over others with this book.

Not impressed.......2003-09-27
Next this volume is weaker then the Laqueur 'Encyclopedia of the holocaust' which is a much more authoritative volume that includes tomes more information, has more pcitures and more maps and is sensational in that it doesnt dumb down the TRUTH.
This encyclopedia continues the virulent anti-semitism that tries to convince us that the 'Jews' were a 'people apart'. How can this be when we all know Jews held top jobs in the governments, businesses, colleges and medical insistutions in both Poland and Germany. The attempt to blame the holocaust on the Jews by showing us the object of the 'wondering Jew' is something that seems to seap through the introductory passages of this book.
Stating that teaching the holocaust is mandatory in most schools and that hsi book will be helpfull is a nice and noble goal. But it doesnt seem to be a valid reason for creating a compendium of holocaust material. Shouldnt we have an encyclopedia of the holocaust not just because kids are 'required' to learn about it?
This volume does not include the variety of contributors(although they convinced Yad Vashem to contribute) nor the plethora of maps and pictures that other similar works include. This reference is not academic, but maybe thats to its credit since it pitches itself to 'secondary school' where it is 'required' to learn the holocaust.
