Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Fifth Edition.......2007-10-05
This book is o.k. but has way too much information for the average college student who just wants the bare basic facts to get through a writing assignment. It took longer to find the information I needed than it did to write the paper.
I am glad that I chose the spiral format in that it is extremely easy to work with as opposed to the traditional bounded style book.
For someone who plans on writing a lot of papers this book is a must.
Buy the software instead!.......2007-10-04
If you have to write papers in APA style I recommend just buying the software instead. For what it is, I am sure it is fabulous, but working full time and taking a masters program I don't have time to look up how to do all the notation, etc. Just buy the software program and it makes it much easier.
Book Review.......2007-10-02
This book isn't the best APA manual out there. They only give one sample of an APA paper. In addition, it is somewhat difficult to navigate. But, this book is "THE" APA manual and so it the most accurate book for APA format.
APA Publication Manual.......2007-09-30
This is an excellent source for how to properly document refrences and sources uses APA format.

If you are an academic physician you cannot miss it!.......2007-08-12
The base to write a scientific paper. You can learn the most important criteria to conduct and write a scientific research according with international guidlines. It is the style!
Excellent, comprehensive, and easy to use.......2005-08-02
The Manual is a complete guide to the AMA style and also an excellent grammar book. The topics are easy to find and the tables and lists are comprehensive. It is a great companion to The Chicago Manual of Style because it details the grammar preferred by the AMA and contains needed terminology. This is a necessary reference for medical publications proofreaders and editors.
A style manual you will rarely close.......2002-04-11
The specific goal of the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors is to codify and collect the myriad instructions, rules, and dictums that AMA applies to the many journals, books, and other publications that are printed under its imprint. The more general goal, perhaps not stated, is to broaden the influence of those standards so they encompass more of the medical publishing community.
The book, developed by a committee of writers, editors, and publishers, is organized around five major categories, Preparing an Article for Publication, Style, Terminology, Measurement and Quantitation, and Technical Information. Each of these categories is, in turn, broken down into chapters that probe various aspects of each category. Finding information is easy, and the writers have used examples generously to make the points clear.
The first section, Preparing an Article for Publication, is, naturally slanted more toward authors and those who toil to prepare authorýs manuscripts for publication. There are many guidelines offering advice that ranges from preparing the abstract to preparing any of six different types of acknowledgments. Editors and copy editors would do well to review this chapter as well. The section on citing Web sites alone is crucial reading.
I suspect, but cannot prove, that many researchers will not read deeply beyond the opening chapter, feeling that the remaining sections are more the province of copy editors and journal editors. Perhaps there is some merit to that line of thinking, but all authors in the medical sciences would benefit from the copious advice here, and the better writers, Iým sure, do follow the principles of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and usage set forth in the section on style. Common mistakes, such as confusing case and patient, redundancies, and the ever so ticklish topic of race/ethnicity are some of the many points discussed thoroughly.
The section on terminology is so mind-bogglingly detailed that all one can hope to do is remember that the AMA Style Guide will almost always have the answer if you have a question about an abbreviation (how many times is something mistakenly called an acronym instead of an initialism?), medical nomenclature (a huge chapter that is the heart of the book), or eponyms (which, thanks to this guide may now be a topic we can quit haggling over).
Measurement and Quantitation continue to be a bane for many writers and editors, though without delving too much into specifics, letýs say that this section will answer most questions but not without careful reading and perhaps a look at the Chicago Manual of Style for a bit clearer presentation on this topic. The chapter on statistics, unique to this guide, notes how to express confidence intervals, confirms that the word Student in Student t test is capitalized (sorry, but this text editor on Amazon.com does not display the italic t), provides a list of statistical symbols and abbreviations, and offers valuable tips about displaying equations. And those examples barely hint at the wealth of information here.
A final section on technical information provides a thumbnail guide to good layout and design of printed materials, worthy sets both of copyediting marks and proofreading marks (which are no doubt often photocopied and posted in a visible location), an excellent primer on how to edit hard copy, and a glossary of publishing terms.
If you are a medical writer or editor, odds are that you already either have a copy of this guide or you borrow one from a colleague. If you are an aspiring medical communicator, you will need your own copy so you can mark in it, attach tabs, and leave open on your desk.
thank you cheryl ýverson for that work.......2000-05-17
I read the book , I feel that work is very nice ,and I give that 5 star ,
I recommend it for all medical writers.......2000-03-27
I really liked this book. I was searching for such a useful manual for a long time, and at last found it! It is not only helpful and authorative but also written in a very user-friendly fashion. All those who are involved in medical writing can learn from (and perhaps enjoy) this book. Go on and take a look at it before starting to write your next piece!

excellent effort and a great start for anyone with a concience.......2007-08-11
I loved this book. I use it constantly and recommend it for everyone! Wow, that corporation Altria that owns about a hunrdred familiar brands is so evil! I do wish it had more information on the comapnies it does list. And I would also have loved it if it included much more names than it did. I couldn't find most of the brands I'd like to know about in there. Still, it's better than no info and it's a great portable guide during shopping trips.
Green Living Easy.......2007-07-20
This book can help people who want to spend their money in the right direction toward environmentally conscious and socially responsible business'. It's easy, fun, self-fulfilling and educating.
Everyone needs one.......2007-06-30
This little book is the best thing I ever purchased. It makes it so easy to make informed shopping decisions so I can support the principles that are important for a company to have. It has opened my eyes to the business/corp. world to help me use my dollar to vote. It also offers lists such as where it is most important to pay attention to the grades (ex. choosing an "A" bank will have a greater impact than say an "A" brand deoderant). I an planning on buying a ton of these books as stocking stuffers this year for friends and family. Spread the knowledge!
Let Your Money Talk.......2007-03-31
Money Talks, and nothing speaks louder than which products you buy. This book will help simplify your buying choices.
This is great.......2007-03-13
Takes all the mystery out of shopping for lots of basics and not so basics. This book is very portable and not nearly as complicated as other guides and you can't carry a website shopping with you.
I'm going to be giving out a bunch of these.

Book Description
A guide to the art of personal writing, by the author of Fierce Attachments and The End of the Novel of Love
All narrative writing must pull from the raw material of life a tale that will shape experience, transform event, deliver a bit of wisdom. In a story or a novel the "I" who tells this tale can be, and often is, an unreliable narrator but in nonfiction the reader must always be persuaded that the narrator is speaking truth.
How does one pull from one's own boring, agitated self the truth-speaker who will tell the story a personal narrative needs to tell? That is the question The Situation and the Story asks--and answers. Taking us on a reading tour of some of the best memoirs and essays of the past hundred years, Gornick traces the changing idea of self that has dominated the century, and demonstrates the enduring truth-speaker to be found in the work of writers as diverse as Edmund Gosse, Joan Didion, Oscar Wilde, James Baldwin, or Marguerite Duras.
This book, which grew out of fifteen years teaching in MFA programs, is itself a model of the lucid inteligence that has made Gornick one of our most admired writers of ninfiction. In it, she teaches us to write by teaching us how to read: how to recognize truth when we hear it in the writing of others and in our own.
Customer Reviews:
Made me want to get back to writing.......2007-03-09
Gornick manages to analyze exactly what makes a personal essay successful without sounding didactic or sentimental. I'm not surprosed, as she is a terrific writer herself. She uses examples of pieces and excerpts from well-known and not-so-well known writers. For anyone who has written creative non-fiction and hasn't always known what to do to improve their work, Gornick offers an unusual way of looking at things, an interesting combination of intuitive and analytical. If you are new to writing, she offers suggestions on how to read other writers, and what to look for. I would add this to "Bird by Bird," by Anne Lamott, as excellent and inspiring books for writers.
write it right- the Gornick way.......2007-02-15
The Situation and the Story although easy to follow is a tough read. Gornick's book tells how to read memoirs as well as how to write them. She strives for the highest standards and lays great responsiblity on the wrier's shoulders. Beyond just relating a good story that happens to be true, Gornick expects the writer to impart wisdomto the reader gained by the writerfrom the act of writing the memoir. If the writer didn't gain wisdom, t she probably shouldn't write the memoir.
For serious memoirist the book is a must read, and reread, and reread.
Book was not what I thought it would be.......2006-08-10
No fault of amazon or author.
sylvia winner.......2005-09-24
Vivian Gornick never disappoints me. Her intellegence and insights abound and this is a particularly stimulating and revealing book.
Incredible.......2004-10-24
Gornick's approach to the subject and her analysis of personal narrative = priceless. A thoroughly engaging read for those who are exploring how to become stronger writers of essays and/or memoirs. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Filled with practical advice that will help anyone obtain the information they seek through Italian records, Italian Genealogical Records is a comprehensive guide to the complexities and nuances of what could otherwise be a daunting task. In this book, the author discusses the history and development of Italian record keeping, providing reproductions of typical records and a complete translation and thorough explanation of each. Among the many other topics covered in this book are the significance of Italian surnames and the relevance of Italian noble families in the search for Italian ancestors.
Customer Reviews:
Good- but more informative than useful.......2007-07-23
Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent book. But I found it to focus too much on providing general information rather than specific break-downs on actions to take.
It may have been better if it were divided into two books- one giving the necessary history and background needed to understand how Italian records work, when they came into existence, etc. And another giving specific information and tips on how to obtain them.
Italian records are as complex as it's history. So two books may have been in order, there is just so much information there. Or one book, with less information, but more specifics on each category that they chose.
It left me a bit overwhelmed with knowledge, but still no clear direction to go in.
It's kinda like when you are lost and try asking for directions and they tell you 3 different ways you can go, and all they do is confuse you more-so you have a lot of information but are somehow more confused. I'd rather have them tell me one way, that will get me there... I think that explains how I felt after reading this book.
The first book to buy on Italian records.......2005-12-27
This was the first book I bought on Italian genealogy several years ago and it is still the best source for understanding Italian records. Using the form letters I have been successful in obtaining information from a variety of Italian sources. What is especially useful is the balance between the how to chapters and the background on the records. Highly recommended.
Only in Italy, Only in America.......2005-09-08
Thank heavens this book came into my life as a dedicated heritage researcher, first generation Italo-American. Since I am alone in this, as are many out there I have founf doing this, I especially appreciated the wonderful sources, shortcuts, and information given to the noviate, although anyone can learn something from this complete guide. A great addition to the literature.
This Is It!.......2003-01-31
For those of you in search of your Italian heritage need look no further. Everything you need is right here in this relatively cheap book written by, get this, a non-Italian! Whether you just want to get your grandparents birth records from the 1890's or go all the way back to the 1700's to get your 5th great grandparents marriage record, this book will tell you how, in easy step by step instructions. Can't read or write in Italian? Mr. Cole's book does that for you, too. Don't know your Italian history? Guess what? Mr. Cole does, and he shares it with you in his book.
There are many illustrations of actual Italian records from the 1800's to going back almost 1000 years, and he explains what each is and what the records say. This author covers the history of surnames as well.
With the information in this book, it would be virtually impossible for someone who's ancestors were Italian not to discover their heritage.
I strongly recommend this book.
EXCELLENT.......2003-01-29
This is a truly outstanding work. Well-written, fcat filled, concise, orderly. Dr. Cole covers all the important topics very well. If you buy just one book on Italian genealogy, this is the one.
Using just this book, a subscription to POINT journal, an Italian dictionary, and a Latin dictionary I was able to go through the LDS films of my grandfather's ancestral town and in a few months easily trace most of his lines back to the 1500s.

Officers' Guide.......2007-06-27
I have been using the 3rd edition since 1972. The 6th edition by Lieutenant Colonel Estes is a tremendous improvement though Chapter 22 Marine Corps Social Life is still antiquated and reeks of the 19th Century. I did not observe the use of calling cards once in my thirty year career.
Marine Officer's Guide.......2005-09-22
I accepted my commission this summer and found this book helpful because it addressed some of the customs and history of the United States Marine Corps all in one location. The book is well organized and each chapter can be read on its own. Good overview of the basics. The history portion is superficial. I'm wondering if a more recent edition should be available since this book is several years old.
Yes.......2004-12-24
First Off i am going to go to the Naval Academy, and i will stop at nothing to get accepted. I hope that by having read this book, i will be more prepared to go to annapolis and eventually become an officer in the marines. This book answers everything i could have asked and more. In summary, if you have big goals, this book will help you achieve them.
A great tool for non-Marines, too........2000-11-14
I imagine this book to be an invaluable resource for serving USMC officers, whether fresh out of The Basic School or with many years of service. But it has another use too: as a guide to the Corps for future Marines, and for non-Marines like me.
At first blush, much of the information in this book may seem obscure or even irrelevant for people not making a career in the Marine Corps: information about personnel folders and fitness reports, how to apply for and receive transit insurance, or how to render salutes when small boats pass close aboard. But even in these details, a sense of what it means to be a Marine comes through loud and clear.
For a non-Marine, the real value of this volume lies in two areas: (1) its explanations of the history and traditions of the Corps (Marines are often said to be the most history-conscious of all the services), and (2) the explanation of the role the Corps plays in America's military machine, including how the Corps is structured, trained, stationed, and led.
Non-Marines can also find much merit in the sections on the attributes of a leader, dealing with subordinates, the useful, if somewhat brief, bibliography, and the glossary of common USMC terms and slang.
If you are, or plan to be, a Marine officer, absolutely read this book.
If you're not a Marine, but are interested in the Corps, its history or its present functions, I recommend this guide very highly.
At one point, the author quotes General John A. Lejeune: 'The future success of the Marine Corps depends on two factors: first, an efficient performance of all the duties to which its officers and men may be assigned; second, promptly bringing this efficiency to the attention of the proper officials of the Government, and the American people.' LtCol Estes admirably succeeds in 'bringing this efficiency to the proper attention' of any civilian interested enough in the Corps to pick up this most valuable book.
If you are or are going to become a Marine Officer, get this.......2000-01-31
This book which is written by retired Lt. Col. Kenneth W. Estes(who also wrote the Handbook for Marine NCOs)is filled with things officers should know. I am sure some of the stuff is taught at OCS and TBS, but some probably isn't. Has chapters like History, Traditions, Bases and Stations, Pay, Sea Service, Marine Corps Reserve, Leadership, Arriving at Your First Assignment, Personal Administration and Affairs, Social Life, Military Justice, and others. Its hardcover, and just shy of 500 pages. I personally liked the section that describes your typical career pattern as an officer.

A superb reference for writers, researchers, students and teachers, this dictionary-style book illuminates everyday life in the 1800s, decade by decade. Readers will find hundreds of otherwise obscure facts about:
* Popular slang--from the range to the underworld
* How to furnish a farmhouse or outfit a barn
* How much it cost for a shot of whiskey or to mail a letter
* Styles of the fashionable--and not so fashionable
* Courtship and marriage rituals
* Popular food and drink--including brand names
* And much, much more!

One book you will need as a writer........2007-08-23
This book has all the stuff you will need to make your novel seem real. I promise you will enjoy this book even if you are not a writer. I found the answers to all the questions I had been asking. I thank Marc McCutcheon for all his hard work. It has helped me.
Great information at your finger tips.......2007-01-29
This is a great reference guide. I am currently writing a romance novel set in the mid 1800's. The chapters are easy to find what you're looking for and the examples show how the word or phrase was used. If your looking for a great reference guide that is straight to the point I would highly recommend "Everyday Life in the 1880's"
Mediocre, missing essential information, poorly constructed.......2006-06-12
This book lacks any information about education. Such an essential subject - affecting children and adults alike - should certainly be included.
Nor does it include information about art (visual/performing) or literature pertinent to the people at the time.
It also has no index, so that searching for anything is ridiculously slow.
Visuals are lacking - textual descriptions of hair or various equipment are poor substitutes for an image.
Essentially it is a poorly organized dictionary, and stating that it is "a guide for writers, students and historians" is an overstatement to say the least!
Simply a dictionary .......2006-03-09
When I read the description of the book I thought that this book would actually provide information about everyday life in the 1800's; instead, it is merely a dictionary. There are no passages that describe fashion, etiquette, industry, clothing, or anything else useful to a historian. Instead, the book merely provides one sentence descriptions of objects you probabaly can already identify. This book may be useful if you come across the name of an item in a primary text and you are not sure what it is. However, it provides very little useful general information
Holy disorganization, Batman...........2005-12-28
It's been a few months since I read this, but I thought I might give a review.
I found this book horrid. It was not organized in a way that would be simple and easy for a reader. As a writer of historical fiction I was interested in finding out about daily life during the Civil War. But I would find references from all years thrown together so I had to fish out the important details. It was not broken down by years or decades which I think would have been much easier. I gave up on this book because I couldn't find the information I needed.
If you are a writer and are thinking about this book I suggest getting it from the library, and if you believe it will be of use to you buy it then.

Expert Advice.......2006-02-25
This is an excellent starting point for the beginner. It builds a proper base in a very practical, hands on way. Favretti is a well-known expert in Southern historic garden circles. He's created historic landscapes himself and comes at his subject with a great deal of experience.

Book Description
New Book bridges Ancient Wisdom with Modern Technology!
Dr. Randall C. Jimenez, a San Jose State University educator, and Richard B. Graeber, an engineering documentation specialist, have collaborated to bring the first Technical Manual for the Aztec Calendar ever produced. The book was created to address a lack of clear, concise information regarding this ancient native artifact and to correct inaccuracies as taught in history classes across the U.S. today. By using concise documentation techniques, over 240 sources were compressed into a 100-page book, which includes 150 technical drawings, 230 word native glossary, timeline and a 12-page bibliography.
This unique book entitled Aztec Calendar Handbook, on the surface appears to be about the Sun Stone, but in reality is about of Native American history. Chapters include; the History of the Aztec Calendar, Native American Time-keeping, Keepers of Time, Founding of Tenochtitlan and the Legend of Quetzalcoatl. It is designed as an accessible authority on the Aztec Calendar and the people that had such a profound effect on the shaping of modern America.
By looking at myths, legends & history with an Aztec's perception of God, this new Manual provides needed answers to many important questions.

This book is clear, non-technical, and easy to read and understand. People interested in the subject will find it useful.
Aztec Calendar Handbook.......2002-09-08
Grammatical aside, there is no other treatise on pre-Columbian America and the Aztec Calendar as complete, concise and thought provoking as this one. I didn't notice the grammatical error until the fellow from Tejas spotted it. I was too amazed at having my perception of Native America shattered. After reading many books on the Aztecs, I bought this book and was favorably impressed by the depth, continuity and treatment of the entire subject matter. There is so much information in this book its astounishing. The bibliography contains over 200 sources. Direct eyewitnesses from the 16th century are quoted. The Time-Line is great. I will be referring to this book for years to come.
