Great for the social reader.......2007-06-08
I found this book really good for the social reader. If someone reads alot of books than this probably will be too small. It really helps to go back later and refresh the book, and if you have loved ones they can get a brief summary of the book to see if they would want to read it.
Reading Journal.......2000-01-19
I bought this journal for my reading club and was pleasently surprised by the structure it provided. First of all I never thought of setting a goal of reading and recording one book per month and that was one of the first things among many that I most appreciated. This is a great guide for anyone of any age. I recommend it highly!

Wonderful handbook for booklovers.......2003-11-19
Shelf Life is full of wonderful quotes about words and books, enlightening and inspirational stories for all booklovers, and encouragement to live your life as a reader. I thoroughly enjoyed this window into the minds of authors about the meaning and joy of reading.
Disappointing.......2003-08-14
I received this book as a birthday gift from a former coworker and long-time friend who like me has a vast love of reading books. The book could have benefited from a good editor that would hopefully cut out the all too frequent Christian rhetoric and caught problems such as the duplicate lenghty C.S. Lewis quote that appeared in two sections of the book.
The book was at it's best when the authors were quoting secular authors from throughout history, which thankfully was a large part of the book, but not enough large enough to salvage it.
The book was at it's worst when original writing and dogma by the authors appeared.
Only for Book lovers, I'm sure!.......2000-06-13
"I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library," wrote Jorge Luis Borges. This perfect quote for book lovers is a sampling of what's inside Shelf Life, a treatise about the impact books have on humanity. Throughout this small volume, the reader uncovers information about books as well as wonderful quotes concerning books, and book lists from a variety of sources. It is also a look at what kinds of reads appeal to a variety of thinkers. The quotes alone are enough to make an avid reader want to get his/her hands on these pages, the book lists are engrosing as well. I could ad some of my own favorites to this review, and so I shall: My Best Friends Live In Books ...from a poster promoting the children's writer, Rosemary Wells. You better be careful to make books like you!... ...taken from The Goops by Gelette Burgess. The only thing missing are some pretty pictures! Enjoy!
A fascinating literary, cultural and historical survey........2000-02-04
The culture of books and reading has had a great impact not only upon the lives of individuals, but on the course of nations. This celebration of books and reading gathers quotes and reflections by literary figures from all eras, considering these changes. Light but inviting reading.

Book Description
"What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours."
-- J. D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye (1951)
"I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading." -- Thomas B. Macaulay, Life (1876)
The love of books, and the desire to speak and write of that love, are as old as books themselves. In fact, they are even older than printed books. "All the glory of the world would be buried in oblivion, unless God had provided mortals with the remedy of books," wrote Richard de Bury in
The Philobiblon (The Love of Books), which was completed in 1345, more than a hundred years before Gutenberg printed his first Bible.
And in every generation since de Bury's there have been new voices expressing the pleasures they take in books and reading.
Speaking of Books contains hundreds of the best of those expressions -- entertaining and thought-provoking quotations about the reading and enjoyment of -- not to mention obsession with -- books. The collection includes examples of bibliophilia that range across the centuries and around the globe, from ancient Chinese proverbs to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, from the Bible to Woody Allen, from Jane Austen to Mark Twain, and from William Shakespeare to J. D. Salinger.
Filled with insight, wisdom, and humor,
Speaking of Books will be read with pleasure by everyone who believes, as Thomas Carlyle did, that "of the things which man can do or make here below, by far the most momentous, wonderful, and worthy are the things called books."
"I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves."
-- Anna Quindlen, "Enough Bookshelves," New York Times, August 7, 1991
"It was books that taught me that the things that torment me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who had ever been alive." -- James Baldwin, in the New York Times, January 1, 1964
"Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore!" -- Henry Ward
Beecher, Star Papers; or, Experiences of Art and Nature (1855)
"What refuge is there for the victim who is oppressed with the feeling that there are a thousand new books he ought to read, while life is only long enough for him to attempt to read a hundred?" -- Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Over the Teacups (1891)
"I took a speed-reading course where you run your finger down the middle of the page and was able to read War and Peace in twenty minutes. It's about Russia." -- Woody Allen, in a letter by Phyllis Mindell to the New York Times, September 3, 1995
"You may perhaps be brought to acknowledge that it is very well worthwhile to be tormented for two or three years of one's life, for the sake of being able to read all the rest of it." -- Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey (1818)
"Book-love, I say again, lasts throughout life, it never flags or fails, but, like beauty itself, is a joy for ever." -- Holbrook Jackson, The Anatomy of Bibliomania (1930)

10,000 ways to say I love you...to a book.......2007-01-22
Books are one of the most precious possessions we humans can have; they are our history, our knowledge, our culture, and the largest record that we exist. And, in Speaking of Books, the reader will find page after page of the words we have used throughout recent history to lovingly (and at times not so lovingly) talk about our books.
Whether you are a biblioholic/bibliomaniac or you just love to read the books in your local library ("No place affords a more striking conviction of the vanity of human hopes than a public library" -Dr. Samuel Johnson), this book will entertain and enlighten you about our love affair with the bound written word. From the well known such as Edgar Allen Poe and Ralph Waldo Emerson to the obscure, people have been writing and talking about books since the book was first published.
"The trouble with this book is that its covers are too close together." - Christopher Lehmann-Haupt
Appropriately Thought Out.......2005-12-08
The editors have collected many powerful sayings and arranged them under twenty different topics to create a very useful compendium. It is a wonderful reference for anybody especially writers, readers, speakers, collectors, and people who love books in general. The mixture of funny quotes, inspirational sayings, and aggressive thoughts would surely challenge the readers' thought processes about each adage. An index of authors is provided at the end of the compilation for easy search. Although it is supposed to be a reference book, reading it from start to finish is pretty exciting.
A book about books is a booklover's delight .......2004-10-21
1) There are more good books than any single person can ever read in their lifetime
2) A sick child at home may in reading a book have a true adventure in mind
3) Not all books are good ones. There are bad books in the world- there are Evil ones that have brought great disaster and suffering.
4) A book can tell us more about strangers than we can ever know about people close to us
5) Each of us is a book or many books. And perhaps one day in the Great Library of the Future there will be a book for each of us that tells our life story.
6) The greatest book there is is the Book of Books-and the author is G-d.
7) Shakespeare did not write his plays to be books- and yet what greater books are there than Lear and Hamlet and Macbeth and Julius Caeasar?
8) A book a day keeps the Alzheimer's at bay.
9) A book about books is a booklover's delight
10) Let us all praise our favorite books.
lively tribute to the love of books and reading.......2004-09-29
This compendium of quotes is divided into 20 chapters (some more vaguely defined than others), each with a short introduction, including:
The Pleasures of Reading
The Pleasures of Buying and Owning Books
Bibliomania
How to Read
Lending and Borrowing Books
What Books Can -- and Cannot -- Teach Us
Collector and Collecting
The Book Trade
The Enemies of Books
Libraries
Good Books and Bad
Books and the Young
Authors and Their Readers
Quotes range in length from one sentence to paragraphs, and are by authors and readers, most pro some con. Unfortunately, not all are dated or sourced. An author index can help you locate musings by particular people.
The font is large and clear, and the book format makes this a pleasure to read.
Fun browsing material for book lovers.
Why we love books...........2003-09-15
A great effort by the editors of another great book "A Passion for Books".As a lover of books and reading I am attracted to books on books. It takes a pair like Rabinowitz and Kaplan to do a real good job of producing such good results.Books on books and books of quotes seem to be topics that edited book producers and publishers seem to believe are a snap to produce.I haven't checked ,but I would suspect R&K could but wouldn't crank out a book on some other subject ie.Birdwtching even if prompted by a publisher.I think this is why these two books are so good.I find editors that pump out books on a variety of subjects produce mediocre results and fall in the same realm as those referred to by Francis M Cornford on page 209 "University printing presses exist, and are subsidized by the Government for the purpose of producing books which no one can read;and they are true to their high calling".These kind of books can often be identified as having received a grant by a government or other body that believes that they, rather than the buyer, should decide what is worth publishing.

Feel good book gets you talking.......2006-08-16
I bought this book because I want to keep my finger on the pulse of my kid's goals, feelings, and social well being. This book is similar to 'adult' affirmation books, but it truly is written for teens - and very well written;
Every day covers certain themes such as manners, feelings, attitudes, goals, time management, & problem solving. Each day begins with a quote from a variety of folks (Eleanor Roosevelt, Chris Rock, David Robinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jesse Jackson, Sting, Mark Twain, etc.) A short paragraph gets you thinking & talking about the topic. The day ends with a topical affirmation (what the book calls "I-Statements") - suggestions about how to use the day's ideas in your daily life.
We have enjoyed this book. It's approx. 4'x6' and close to 400 pages. I keep it on the kitchen cupboard and plan to continue using it over breakfast throughout the school year.
GREAT!.......2000-04-21
this book was very helpful to me and i am sure it would be just as helpful to most teens today. this book tells you the truth about life today and how to handle it. It's GREAT!

The bibliophiles of the world are an erudite and witty bunch, especially the hundreds of quotable sages and wags whose bons mots are collected in this tribute to the written word. The authors of these insights, spanning centuries and continents, include Aeschylus and Lady Bird Johnson, Gustave Flaubert and Francis Bacon, Russell Baker and Isadora Duncan, Katharine Hepburn and Mark Twain, Pablo Picasso and Brad Pitt.
The quotations offer witticisms as well as philosophical insights. Woody Allen quips, "I took a speed-reading course and read War and Peace in twenty minutes. It's about Russia." And Franz Kafka declares, "Books must be the axe to break the frozen sea inside me." Mark Twain reflects, "I like a thin book because it will steady a table, a leather volume because it will strop a razor, and a heavy book because it can be thrown at a cat." And Fran Lebowitz notes that "Magazines all too frequently lead to books, and should be regarded by the prudent as the heavy petting of literature." Aristotle observes that "To write well, express yourself like the common people, but think like a wise man." H.L. Mencken explains, "I write in order to attain that feeling of tension relieved and function achieved, which a cow enjoys on giving milk." And Thomas Mann opines that "A writer is somebody for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people."
In all, there are more than 500 quotations that pithily consider every aspect of authors, readers, collectors, and books. Entertaining and provocative, it is the sort of book that makes you sit friends down and read them just one more entry. In one such entry, Robertson Davies observes that "There are many people--happy people, it usually appears--whose thoughts at Christmas always turn to books. The notion of a Christmas tree with no books under it is repugnant and unnatural to them." This is just the sort of book to make such people remarkably content. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
A comprehensive collection of the best words on words--from the world's most renowned bibliophiles.

"A room without books is like a body without a soul."--Cicero
"The proper study of mankind is books."--Aldous Huxley
This collection of over five hundred quotations captures the wisdom and wit of the most insightful things ever said about books, spoken and written by such distinct legendary figures as: Aeschylus, Woody Allen, Maya Angelou, Jane Austen, Francis Bacon, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Faulkner, Robert Frost, James Joyce, Rudyard Kipling, D. H. Lawrence, Abraham Lincoln, Christopher Lloyd, Marianne Moore, Marcel Proust, George Bernard Shaw, Sir George Sitwell, Gertrude Stein, Sara Stein, Ruth Stout, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Jefferson, Franz Kafka, Helen Keller, Malcolm X, Groucho Marx, John Milton, George Orwell, John Ruskin, Charles Scribner, George Bernard Shaw, Wallace Stevens, Robert Penn Warren, William Carlos Williams, Oprah Winfrey, and W. A Primer on Quotations about Books.......2006-04-27
Books about Books always get my attention. I have a lot of them in my library and have written reviews on several. This little tome packs a lot between its covers. While it is only
5" X 7",it has 241 pages. It is a really good introduction to the subject, especially if it is your first to read about book quotes. It is also interesting to someone who has read several.
The difference with this book is that it gives quotes from various areas of books.
First,we get a Forward by Nicholas A Basbanes,one of the premier writers about books. Then 10 Chapters as follows;
1 In Praise of Books
2 On Writing
3 Autobiography and Biography
4 Reading
5 Libraries
6 Literacy
7 Censorship and Destruction of Books
8 Publishing and Publishers
9 Literature
10 Collecting Books
So,you see it gives quotes on every aspect of books.
Personally,I found some chapters better than others. Surprisingly, I found that the quotes by writers did not impress me as much as I expected. I enjoyed the chapter on Collecting books the most;and that did not surprise me as Nicholas Basbanes was involved with it;and he is one of the best.
To someone new to Books about Books;you will be given the names of many other books on this subject.I kept waiting for some mention of one of my favorites,"The Anatomy of Bibliomania" by Holbrook Jackson. I had just about given up hope when it appeared on the last page.
All in all, a great little book and sure to delight any book lover.
I love quotations.......2000-04-21
These two have something very special here. I love reading quotations and I love books, so I guess it's obvious why I like this. Yet, as Winston Churchill once said, "It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations." Thank you for the entertainment and enlightenment.
SUPER! HAS ALL MY FAVORITE QUOTES!.......1999-09-21
I've collected reading and book quotes for years in a spiral notebook. This one has all my favorites and then some. I plan to buy extra copies of this jewel for all my biblioholic friends!

Book Description
When writers aren't writing books, they're often writing about books. ("A room without books is a body without a soul" --Cicero, p. 47), or about being a writer ("I am a writer perhaps "because" I am not a talker," --Gwendolyn Brooks, p. 29), about technique ("Style and structure are the essence of a book; great ideas are hogwash" --Vladimir Nabokov, p. 165), about other writers ("Indeed there are few better ways of spending a hilarious evening then in recalling the worst lines in English poetry" --W. H. Auden, p. 8), or publishing ("Yes, I suppose some editors are failed writers--but so are most writers" --T.S. Eliot, p. 76), about the writing life ("I write when I'm inspired, and I see to it that I'm inspired at nine o'clock every morning" --Peter deVries, p. 64), or reading ("He knew everything about literature except how to enjoy it" --Joseph Heller, p. 106). "Only in Books" is the most complete and up-to-date collection of quotes in print on books and writing--over a thousand quotations, inspiring and amusing, familiar and surprising--guaranteed to delight book lovers everywhere. From Woody Allen to Emile Zola, Herman Melville to Toni Morrison, "Only in Books" presents the best of what has been said and written about books. For anyone who agrees with Tomas Jefferson's exclamation "I cannot live without books" or with Franz Kafka, "A book must be an ice-axe to break the seas frozen inside our souls." "Only in Books" is the perfect book-side companion.

A Somewhat Freaky Passion?.......2001-10-22
As a voracious reader and aspiring writer, I was naturally drawn to this book. I really had no expectations. What I found however was a real treasure. What a great collection of stories!
I never really gave much thought to writing a book about books but Graffagnino has, along with the many incredible writers quoted in this book. You'll find passages/quotes from most popular authors as well as many famed authors. (I have a pillow in my study quoting Thomas Jefferson, "I cannot live without books." You'll find this quote among many others in this excellent compilation.)
Truly a great book on books relating the feelings your favorite authors have relative to books. For any bibliophile, this book is a must have.
A delightful collection of quotes for all bibliophiles........1998-11-17
An appropriate and delightful quote awaits the reader for all occasions and relationships with books. A marvelous gift opportunity.

Books & Reading.......2002-09-26
Because of my professional career, I collect quotation books about reading and literacy. And this collection by Bill Bradfield is the best I've found to date. Yes, he's got the standard oldies by folks like Emerson, Erasmus, and Shaw but he's also included up-to-date quotations from the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Malcolm X, and Stephen King. Granted, he included me in the list but I didn't need it -- I already knew what I said. At the price, it's the best bargain in quote books for anyone in education or libraries.
