5 out of 5 stars This book helped me appreciate the temple more deeply.......2005-06-11

I have loved this book for years. Hugh Nibley was not only a brilliant man, a great scholar, and a dedicated teacher; he also had the gift of being able to cut past all the endless intellectual distractions to focus on what is important. When I first read this book, frankly, I was blown away. There was so much richness about the temple that I did not know. However, more than all that are the essays and talks on what the implications of all this are for the way should live our life here with regard to what comes hereafter.

A temple is the House of the Lord and God uses it to teach, enrich, and endow the lives of his children. Brother Nibley is right that the temple is a scale model of the universe. It shows not only our place and purpose, but sets us on the correct path through teaching, covenants, and ordinances. Temples make eternity understandable and unite all ages of time in one eternal present with our Father. In this book we not only see what was restored with the Church through revelation, the author also shows us echoes (not sources) of the true teachings in ancient and pagan temples and ceremonies.

There are a wide range of essays on various aspects of the theme of the temple and the cosmos (the everything). In one of them, Brother Nibley even talks about science fiction and the gospel! It is full of interesting illustrations.

Hugh Nibley enriched my own appreciation of the temple through the essays and talks collected in this wonderful book. If you are interested in what he had to say on this important gospel topic, I recommend it to you. The author makes so many great points of so many details that are easy to miss that you will never be able to look at the temple the same way again. And opening your vision to seeing the world anew is what a great teacher does.

5 out of 5 stars Nibley's best work by far........2002-12-07

This book is amazing. Nibley's grasp of the subject matter is truly astounding. While it is true that Nibley is a mormon apologist, this work is not skewed like many of his other works. This is his best effort. Whether you are mormon or not this book brings up a lot of intersting similarities with almost every ancient religion and their temple type. Zoroastrian fire temples being the most notable exception. a pure joy to read.

Nibley does not go into depth concerning mormon temple ceremonies but many of the things he discuss will still be easily understood by the non-mormon reader. In addition, a large portion of the book is devoted to the actual structure of the temple as a microcosm of the universe. Also of note is his discusion of sacred vestments through the ages.

4 out of 5 stars Pagan Origins of Mormon Temples.......2002-01-24

Often the scholarly become so involved in proving their thesis that they lose sight of where they are going. In other words they can't see the forest for the trees! Such is the case with Nibley's Temple and Cosmos. Although very informative and well documented, in his zeal to justify the existence of Mormon temples by showing many amazing similarities to temples and temple rituals of the past, he fails to notice that nearly all of his examples are from pagan cultures. Nibley proves well that the origin of Mormon temples is paganism. While the Mormon Church claims its origins stem from ancient Hebrew culture, any real evidence supporting such a claim is conspicuously absent from Nibley's book. ...Go figure!

5 out of 5 stars I am not a scholar.......2000-03-29

I'm no scholar, but I foind this book to be very readable and extremely stimulating. Nibley's thought is astounding. While a couple of his statements on science are now a tad dated, the thought itself is as sound as ever. The coverage of the essays in this volume is astounding--you name it. Nibley's thought is very helpful to all who wish to supplement faith with intellect

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2000-03-06

Nibley's work on Temples, ancient and modern, are incredible. Many of the articles in this book were previously unpublished works. Others are from firesides and addresses at BYU and other places. All are generally aimed towards the LDS audience.

Scholars have, in the last 10 years, expanded on many of Nibley's proposed ideas. Scholars, LDS and non-LDS, have found similar conclusions as Nibley has proposed and have expanded on them (as one example on Nibley's "One Eternal Round" see Mircea Eliade "The Myth of the Eternal Return" (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1954) for more on "parallelism" see John M. Lundquist's "The Temple: Meetingplace of Heaven and Earth" and it's respective bibliography). Many students of temples of the ancient world would find few qualms with the conclusions expressed by Hugh Nibley as they relate to the temple.

This book is mostly directed toward the LDS audience. Despite this it may be informative to the beginning non-LDS student of the temple (especially as seen by the LDS mind). Other books may be suggested but many of the conlcusions would be the same.

3 out of 5 stars Great Fun, But No O'Brian.......2001-03-31

When I was younger, I picked up "Sloop of War" after I had run out of Hornblower novels. With the death of Patrick O'Brian, I returned to the Kent novels which I had stopped reading at "Signal -- Close Action !"

Bolitho hasn't changed. Sentimental -- brave -- generous -- loyal -- self-critical -- larger than life. Whereas Gene Roddenberry pictured Kirk as a 23rd century Hornblower, reserved, self-doubting, internally tortured, brilliant, and brave despite himself, Kent writes Bolitho the way William Shatner played Kirk.

The results are usually entertaining, as here. Kent draws ship-to-ship, cutting-out, and fleet actions as expertly as anyone who writes in this genre, plus he slips in an amount of sentiment that would make O'Brian or Forrester cringe, but it works because we know what a softie Bolitho is underneath. Kent draws the relationship between Bolitho and his officers, especially his nephew Adam, his flag captain Keen, and his cox'n Allday, affectingly (although the conflict with his old friend Herrick, now also a flag officer, seems contrived). The return of Catherine Pareja is a great move, as it allows Kent to write himself out of the hole he got into when he killed off Cheney, Bolitho's great love, then brought back her shadow in the form of Belinda, her look-alike cousin. Catherine brings back a little danger and spunk in the female lead.

But Kent's problems show between battles. There are occasional non-sequiturs in the writing. The dialogue can be stiff. Characters can act inconsistently with the way they were originally drawn, when it serves the plot. The final plot twist this time is awkward and falls flat. Kent handles ships, lines and sails well, but his knowledge of the rest of the history of the period seems sketchy, and his research regarding the workings of the Royal Navy at the time is nowhere near the level of Forrester or O'Brian.

If you're interested in the period and great characters, start with those two. If you love action, start with Bernard Cornwell. If you've read all of those, despite the flaws, Kent is well worth reading -- but we miss ye, Jack and Stephen !

Unwilling to take a desk job at the Admiraltry in london,Vice Admiral Sir Richard Bolitho asks for sea duty, always a frigate captain at heart. He asks for the Hyperion, the first ship of line he had ever commanded. He is still having trouble with his eyes;he is partially blind in his left eye, blinded by sand from a bucket an enemy ball had blown apart. He has difficulty adjusting to staying aloof of the day-to-day running of his ship' He is estranged from his wife,Belinda. Arriving in Antigua in 1804 his orders are to capture a Spanish treasure ship. In Antigua he meets again Catherine Pareja, his love of seven years ago,now married to Viscount Somervell,Inspector General. They find their love has not diminished despite the years of separation. He leads his small fleet to LaGuaira where the Spanish treasure ship laden with gold and silver destined for Spain is harbored. His mission is to capture this prize which Britian sorely needs. After this mission he returns to London where he is ordered to th Mediterranean to intercept and destroy the Spanish fleet which is to join the French to invade England. the sea battles are extremey realistic. This reader had the sense of being there feeling the pain, the chaos, the tension, viewing the carnage. This book is an education of that period of history, the geography of the area involved, the social and political order of the day. It is a lesson in the intricacies of seamanship. It is a model for the management of men. The people are real with the relationsips between the officers and crew, with the ideals of honor, duty and loyalty. The regular characters have become friends to me. This is the 17th book depicting the life of Richard Bolitho. If you haven't read any others, don't miss the opportunity to do so.

This unusual historical roundup takes the significant events of the world one day at a time, starting with January 1 (a day on which Paul Revere was born in 1735; Betsy Ross was born in 1752; the U.S. Congress officially prohibited African slave trade in 1808; Brooklyn merged with Manhattan in 1898; and the colonies of Cyranaica, Tripoli, and Eezaan united to form Libya in 1935) and wending its way through the next 364 days to December 31, when Thomas Edison first demonstrated his electric incandescent light bulb to the public in 1879; and President Truman officially proclaimed an end to World War II in 1946.

The book is appealing for a variety of reasons. Because it doesn't take a chronological approach to history, each event stands out in its own illuminating limelight. You notice it and think about it more freshly, which lets you see it for the accomplishment it is rather than as just another occurrence in the progression of time. On This Day functions nicely as a reference book, in that the index will refer you to the appropriate page for any of more than 1,500 events, where you can discover not only what day of the year it took place but also get a full description of what happened and its context. This book charms most, however, as a browsing book; there's fascination in the juxtaposition of unrelated events, joined merely by happenstance on the same day, though years and worlds apart. Open the book randomly and you find October 14th, with the Battle of Hastings (1066) and the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1964 and to Elie Wiesel in 1986, while on the next page, October 15th, P.G. Wodehouse was born in 1881 and the first draft card was burned in 1965. You'll probably want to check your birthday for other notables who share your date, but after that you're free to riffle through the pages of history and have some fun. --Stephanie Gold

2 out of 5 stars layout aggrevated me, and that's just the beginning.......2003-10-12

I'm not entirely sure who the intended audience of this book is. I'm interesting in things specific to NJ or people born in NJ so I skimmed this book, noting with interest certain events, but I primarily wanted to focus on anything dealing with NJ.

The layout of the text was for me, maddening. Let's say there are 5 items listed for a certain date. Sometimes the authors discuss the events in chronilogical order. Other times they address the most signifigant events first. Sometimes the different events have their own paragraphs, sometimes they don't. In short, to find the discussion of one item you practically need to read them all because there is no pattern or separations. Even more infuriating is that if there are two related events (for exmaple the break-in at watergate, and the resignation of president Nixon) there usually is a reference to the other event. However, sometimes they discuss the event there, and sometimes not. Combine that with the above layout issues, and I could be searching for something that simply isn't there!

Not that this is a problem, per se, but in reading this book I couldn't help but wonder about the editorial process in terms of selection of material to be included. David Lee Roth's birthday is listed, but there are numerous important musicians who aren't. Who decides? and why? and what's the criteria? (I realize its the authors who decided, but you get my point)

I just felt as though the book was inadequate for the task. I felt the same way about Chases Calendar of Events, a book which tries to list annual events, holidays, celebrations, birthdays, etc worldwide. There must be literally dozens of events that took place on March 12th or June 19th. To list only 4 somehow feels incomplete. I realize this was probably done to keep the book from being 500 pages. But if you're gonna do something, do it full and right or not at all...

It almost inspires me to want to write my own book of "things that happened today" because I felt this one was so incomplete. Then I read some of the other reviews. Didn't realize there were errors in this book. Now I realize I SHOULD write my own version.

      5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2002-10-29

I've never posted a review before, but when I noticed the errors in the previous review, I felt compelled to come to the defense of one of my favorite books. I found this book to be remarkably insightful, engaging, and accurate. Its day-by-day is a fresh way to look at history. Now, as for those errors:

According to Gregory Titelman's, "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" `Nero fiddled while Rome burned' refers to "...heedless and irresponsible behavior in the midst of a crisis." Legend has it that in A.D. 64 the emperor Nero (A.D. 37 - A.D. 68), last of the Caesars, set fire to Rome to see `how Troy would look when it was in flames' and to serve as suitable background for a recitation of his poetry while accompanying himself on the lyre..." For the sake of acuracy, should all disctionaries of popular sayings be amended to: Nero lyred while Rome burned?

Norkay is not incorrect. If the writer were familiar with the differences between Wade-Giles and pinyin translations into English, he'd know that Norkay is Wade-Giles, Norgay is pinyin, and both are simply alternative translations from Nepalese which does not use the western alphabet.

As for the nuclear testing not occuring at Los Alamos, virtually every text on the subject correctly cites the tests as having occurred at Los Alamos. Of course they didn't do them in the lab. Of course they took them out into their back yard (way out into their back yard). However, the point is, the tests were conducted from the Los Alamos lab. They were analyzed in the Los Alamos lab. They we conducted by the Los Alamos Lab. Is it such a crucial piece of history that the actual explosion took place far enough away that it didn't obliterate the lab? Or is it simply a point of pride to the critic that he's aware of this inconsequential and obvious historical footnote. If every detail of every event were included in this book, you'd need a forklift to open it.

As for the US Air Force being the US Army Air Force prior to 1947, he's right. However, at that time, it was commonly referred to as the US Air Force.

According to the back cover, there are over 10,000 entries in this book. If those are the most glaring points this armchair critic could cite, it seems like he should have given the book five stars, as I did. I love this book.

1 out of 5 stars Unsuitable for intended use.......2001-07-12

I was disappointed in this book. As an earlier review notes, it _appears_ to be "thoroughly researched," but it's full of errors. Just leafing through the book, with no further research, a number of mistakes jump out.
Among the mistakes - the authors say "the US Air Force" dropped the bomb on Hiroshima; the US Air Force wasn't in existence yet - it was the Army Air Forces that dropped the bomb. The authors twice say the atomic bomb was "tested at Los Alamos"; no - the atomic bomb was developed at Los Alamos, but tested 175 miles away near Carrizozo NM. The authors twice, again, report that Nero was "the emperor who fiddled while Rome burned (in 37 AD)" - a neat trick, considering the violin wasn't invented for another 1500 years or so. The authors twice tell us that Tenzing Norkay accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary on Everest; the name is Norgay. The authors tell us that Edmund Hillary said he climbed "because it's there"; it wasn't Hillary, but George Mallory, some 35 years earlier, who gave that response.
Many of the entries gloss over, or over-simplify, the facts. For instance, the authors truthfully attribute "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" to Admiral Farragut; however, they don't tell us that the "torpedoes" of that day were not self-propelled, but what we would call mines. Whitely's _The Teacher's Calendar_ fills in the missing relevant information.
On historical events such as Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech, Whitely gives more background than these authors.
On other events, such as the seizing of the Amistad, _This Day in History_ is silent, while Whitely's book gives a detailed discussion.
Another example of gloss is the authors' report that Galileo "created a telescope so he could observe the heavens." Galileo certainly improved the telescope, but he didn't invent it.
The unwarranted, even "cutesy," conclusions the authors frequently draw hamper the usefulness of this book. The authors tell us that at Hiroshima "we learned that man had no control over the terrible might of the microscopic atom." In fact, man showed his ability to control atomic forces at Hiroshima, and you can't see atoms through a microscope anyway.
The authors say that the USSR/Nazi Germany non-aggression pact was "the fuse that ignited the Second World War." Elsewhere the authors tell us that WWII "was ignited when Germany invaded Poland." The statements are contradictory and simplistic.
Of course, the book does have its moments - there are a number of stories which appear to be detailed, correct, and interesting. Yet these have limited use, since the reader has to verify every part of the story, in view of the authors' frequent errors on other entries. Am I being too picky? I don't think so - not with a book which certainly intends to be used as an accurate source of history.
You might consider this book for the limited use of knowing a few events that happened on each day, accepting that the book's facts may be wrong and its conclusions unmerited. This book could certainly use some good editing and fact-checking.
A _much_ better book for the classroom, or parent, is Sandy Whiteley's _The Teacher's Calendar: School Year 2001-2002_. Not only is Whitely much more accurate, but she includes many more events per day, and frequently more information on each event than these authors do.

5 out of 5 stars A Kabbalistic Exploration for the Layman.......2006-08-14

Mark Elber's "The Everything Kabbalah Book" is a well-written, lucid, easy-to-follow book that shows surprising depth and understanding for a book with such a bland title.

"Everything Kabbalah" touches on all the important areas of kabbalistic study, from the origins, to the many rabbinic masters; from the philosophy, to the practices. His discussion on the many 'faces' of Kabbalah range from the theosophical, to the ecstatic (a personal favorite), to both practical and even Christian practice.

It is very obvious to me that Mr. Elber is quite learned in this area, and goes to significant lengths to make clear the many difficult areas of metaphysical thought developed over hundreds of years.

This is an excellent book for someone new to the subject matter, or someone who knows his/her way around the 'tree' but would like a quick reference. Would make a great gift, too, to your spiritually-seeking friends.

So, get past the "Everything" book series cover. Like many things in life, if you pay more attention to what's on the inside instead of what's on the outside, you will be well rewarded.

A great devotional book for Christians concerning the history of Christ's church.

      2 out of 5 stars Lost Potentials.......2001-04-20

This is a compact little book with nice black and white illustrations appropriate to the saints, martyrs, or heroes depicted in the synopses above. The information in this book, which represents a great deal of research by the author, is presented in a manner that is interesting to read. That INFORMATION, however, is ESSENTIALLY INACCESSIBLE, BECAUSE IT IS NOT INDEXED. Only the illustrations are, but not in a way that would give the reader a clue as to the page on which the story about a particular saint, martyr, or hero can be found. Nor is there a clue in the titles that top the pages. In the next printing could someone please add an index? If not that, how about printing the name of each saint, martyr, or hero on the page where his/her story first appears in bold?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Daily devotional for those who love history........1999-03-01

The book is full of inspirational stories of saints, marters and church history. I gained a new understanding of many of the changes in the church over the years. Each day has a one page story of some special happening that occured that day in the history of the church.

4 out of 5 stars "On This Day" holds the interest every day........1998-10-02

Be forewarned that some of the people reviewed by Mr. Morgan are villains --- "saints" in name only. But still, this book consistently holds the reader's attention because of the wealth of historical information to be found in it. In spite of the fact that some of the people reviewed are villains and heretics more than saints and heroes, the fact remains that they were ALL involved in the history of the Christian church, and therein lies the compelling interest and value of the book. Mr. Morgan does not judge; he leaves that to the reader, which would probably be necessary for the author of any such book, no matter how stringently he tried to keep to biographies only of people whose faith every reader would judge to be genuine.

"On This Day" is money well spent, in my opinion, and my wife and I are using it as a gift selection for some of our friends.

5 out of 5 stars A fun, informative, and inspiring book!.......1998-03-01

This is a wonderful little book. Somewhat a cross between 'My Utmost For His Highest' and Paul Harvey's Rest of the Story. I love to read what happened on a particular day in history as I lay down for a night's rest.

      Book Description

When her father dies and leaves her to decide the fate of the family farm, Jane Brox wonders how family identity--language, food, a grandfather's wish for "five thousand days like this one"--can endure when so few traces of former lives are left. With a poet's eye and a historian's hunger, she is driven to search out her family's past in the fascinating and quintessentially American history of the Merrimack Valley, its farmers, and the immigrant workers caught up in the industrial textile age.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Uneven, but interesting account.......2000-07-04

I vascillated between really loving parts of this book, and being annoyed at others. The book discusses the history of the Merrimack Valley in northeastern Massachusetts, weaving in stories about the author's parents' lives there as immigrants from Italy and Lebanon. It also compares descriptions of the area written by Thoreau, and others, in the 19th century.

While most of it was fascinating, some aspects of the book bothered me. First, as the book progresses, it becomes evident that it is a collection of prior essays; some portions are repetitive, almost down to the exact language. Second, I felt that the author was trying too hard to be "lyrical." Some of the writing seemed "forced," convoluted, and grammatically awkward, to the point that I had to reread sentences to figure out what she wanted to say.

Despite these criticisms, it is an interesting read about an area that has changed so much over the last 150 years.

5 out of 5 stars This is an incredibly powerful and exquisitely written book........1999-03-24

Jane Brox's second book is masterful: a cross between social history and memoir, a book that is devastatingly clear about the future of the family farm and yet without a trace of rancor. Even if, like me, you're a city person, you should READ THIS BOOK for its pervasive, gentle wisdom; for its stunning prose; for everything a book should offer to its reader--access to a beloved world.

5 out of 5 stars Nuggets of Gold.......2007-06-26

We thoroughly enjoy "On This Day" and highly recommend it!

We use it nearly every day for our family devotions. We homeschool our three boys, age 10, 8, and 3. The historical timeline and birthdays are always quite interesting. My husband begins by giving us the events one at a time. The children and I try to guess the year in which they took place - LOADS of fun! This sometimes sparks a conversation about history we have learned together in school or how the events impacted the lives of their grandparents or great-grandparents. We do the same for birthdates of the famous people listed for that day.

We recently devised a "point system". If you guess a year EXACTLY, you get one point. The boys want the person with the most points to get an extra desert as a reward. Mom has yet to agree to these terms.

We then read the scripture of the day aloud and the corresponding short story from the book. These stories and quotes are little nuggets of gold! This is no warmed-over milk! There's real meat in this compilation of timely tales. We are able springboard from this devotional to dialogue with our boys about faith, what it means, and how to walk out that faith in their everyday lives.
