Book Description

Beginning with an examination of the different stages of women's lives--childhood, virginity, marriage and widowhood, this Companion addresses various aspects of medieval life that affected women's writing. These include the nature of authorship in the period, the position of women at home or in nunneries, and their relationship to religion. Additional essays cover the lives and work of such prominent women writers as Heloise, Marie de France, Christine de Pizan, Julian of Norwich, Margery Kempe and Joan of Arc. A chronology and guides to further reading add information which students and scholars will find invaluable.

I really like this book, although I have not read it all yet. Some of the articles are quite short, though. Overall, I believe it is a great investment!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary for anyone researching Austen scholastically.......2006-01-28

I used this book when I was writing a thesis on Austen. The chapters are each broken into themes (Money, Class, etc.) for easy reference, and there is an extensive index. The book can be uneven because each chapter is written by a different author. Still, the authors represented are among the most prominent Austen authorities in the world.

4 out of 5 stars Useful - but within reason.......2000-12-15

I have to admit from the outset here, that I am a confirmed Janeite, I have an Austen discussion list, and I have read Austen's novels over and over again. So that may well colour what you feel about this review.

This book probably has a limited readership. Austen is still a popular author today - the string of recent movie adaptations and their wild popularity has proven that. It helps too that Austen's books can still be read these days and enjoyed without any help - after all language-wise there isn't slang and metre that puts people off Shakespeare - and her themes of love and marriage are pertinent to any age.

Yet a companion like this is really useful for there were still little in-jokes which Austen uses - her contemporary readers would have understood these without further explanation, but for us we can do with a bit more background to the times she was living in. The most useful chapters for this are 7, 8 and 9 which deal with class, money and Religion and Politics. You don't need to read to understand, but if you want to enjoy Austen's irony in greater depth they make very useful reading.

This is a neat little book if you are not sure if you want to read more on Austen either in Critical literature or biographically. It has 12 chapters in all which offer subjects ranging from the chronology of her life and work, to a good essay on her letters and style. I didn't much enjoy the chapter on Style but I was put off by the graphs in that one (don't ask!). You will pleased to know that this doesn't lack for academic credentials, but it isn't too forcefully academic. I don't think you would enjoy this book at all if you haven't read all of Austen's works, and some idea of their various characters.

So, if you are looking for a handy little volume and a quick read on Austen, her life and times then this is very worthwhile indeed. Other books on Austen that might you enjoy are Claire Tomalin's biography 'Jane Austen - a life' which is excellent. Amanda Vickery's book "The Gentleman's Daughters" is a beautifully researched and written piece on woman's lives in Austen's time and of Austen's class (even using some of her letters).

        Book Description

Focusing the perspectives of gender scholarship on the study of empire produces an original volume full of fascinating new insights about the conduct of men as well as women. Bringing together disparate fields - politics, medicine, sexuality, childhood, religion, migration, and many more topics - this new collection of essays demonstrates the richness of studying empire through the lens of gender. This more inclusive look at empire asks not only why the empire was dominated by men, but how that domination affected the conduct of imperial politics. The fresh, new interpretations of the British Empire offered here will interest readers across a wide range, and will demonstrate the vitality of this innovative approach and the new historical questions it raises. SERIES DESCRIPTION The purpose of the five volumes of the Oxford History of the British Empire was to provide a comprehensive study of the Empire from its beginning to end, the meaning of British imperialism for the ruled as well as the rulers, and the significance of the British Empire as a theme in world history. The volumes in the Companion Series carry forward this purpose by exploring themes that were not possible to cover adequately in the main series, and to provide fresh interpretations of significant topics.

While reading a library's copy of The Cambridge Companion of Mary Wollstonecraft, I was gripped with a desire to own my own copy and promptly ordered it. Having worked with Wollstonecraft material, I found this collection of articles to provide the most informative and best supported coverage of Wollstonecraft's works and thought I have seen as yet. If you need a good scholarly introduction to Wollstonecraft studies, this is an excellent place to start. Claudia L. Johnson has edited an excellent collection of topical articles.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Feminist Overview.......2005-09-20

This is a brilliant intervention in the study of American literature written by one of the smartest, women academics out there. Wonderful in its contextualization of 19th-century American women writers, this book is well-organized, comprehensive and lively. Please don't be daunted by fact-checker wannabes. This is great stuff, for both students and those who would like a women writers compendium on hand.

1 out of 5 stars Caveat lector: do NOT buy this book.......2002-02-27

I began reading this book with great anticipation, looking forward to a pleasant evening learning more about a sadly-neglected subject; women's writing in 19th century America.

About two thirds down the first page of the historical timeline, one eyebrow went up. Three seconds later the other eyebrow joined the first eyebrow. By page 20 I was ready to ask for my money back.

This book is riddled with so many errors of fact, grammar and spelling (a character in one of Mrs. E.D. E. N. Southworth's novels is described as "fighting duals")that I can't believe it made it past the fact-checker and the copy-editor. I have to ask myself the question: If the editors couldn't be bothered to catch these minor, silly mistakes, how can I have any confidence that the rest of the information they are imparting is accurate?

Messrs Bauer and Gould should be ashamed of themselves for allowing such a slipshod piece of work to make it into print.

5 out of 5 stars Breaking down the Hierarchy.......2001-03-10

If Riane Eisler's CHALICE AND THE BLADE (C&B) excited you (or if you're dying to read it), and you'd like to share it with others, this book is for you. Begin to break down the dominator paradigm by sitting in a circle with a bunch of friends or fellow travellers and working the exercises in this book.

THE PARTNERSHIP WAY provides nine "lessons" which guide a group through C&B. This path is structured so that the group follows it together, without relying on the "authority" of a "leader." The experience of covering this material in a "partnership way" is what they didn't teach you in school. Learning to work together without ranking ourselves is a skill that we lost thousands of years ago. This book presents an opportunity for those who would like to reclaim that skill.
