Splendidly illustrated, it includes around 270 black and white illustrations that complement the entries written by specialists and luminaries of the Indian theatre scene. In keeping with the highest standards of international reference publishing, the eidtor has compiled and edited this material from 63 contributors. The threatre defined here spans not just co n ventional proscenium drama, and devotional and secular rural performing genres, but also musical forms such as Kirtan, dance threatre such as Kathakali, and oral narrative such as Katha Kalakshepam, all of which contain theatre's most fundamental element: acting. The Companion has three broad types of entries: the general, offering a conceptual analysis of a wide canvas on topics such as Cinema, Dance, Martial Arts, Mime, Music, Puppetry, Ritual, an d Theory . The se cond consists of longer overviews according to linguistic regions, for example Punjabi theatre or Marathi threatre. The third category mainly covers brief, factual entries about important individuals, groups, organizations, and movements. The Companion is meant for a general readership across the world, along with all those involved in the field of theatre, as well as researchers and students, for whom detailed bibliographies have been included. The book was still shrink-wrapped, and in excellent condition. It arrived very quickly as well.

    4 out of 5 stars time for a 3rd edition.......2006-06-22

The book is perhaps the most comprehensive listing of Indian movies that exists. Even in its earlier first edition. An update was needed simply because of the prodigious output of Bollywood movies each year. The typical number is 700.

From thumbing through the text, you can see the great and diverse nature of Indian society. Even simply in the languages that the movies span. Many stars' names will be unfamiliar to a non-Indian reader. But the book gives the impression that here is a huge world of its own, to rival anything in Hollywood.

This book creates its own conclusion. The 2nd edition came out in 99. Seven years ago. High time for the author to furnish a 3rd edition to encompass the intervening years.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the largest national film industry.......2002-03-24

The Indian film industry is the largest film industry in the world making over 700 films every year in over 20 different languages. This book is a compendium of some of the greatest names in the Indian film industry along with summaries of some of the best films made in India from as early as 1897. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it as a reference book. It is a must for any major library.

Reviewed by Amy Dadichandji Laly, For Pacific Reader, An Asian Pacific North American Review of Books, Spring 2000

The Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema by Ashish Rajadhyaksha and Paul Willemen is perhaps the most exhaustive compendium of reference material compiled as a resource guide for film students and movie buffs around the world. Published by Oxford University Press, this ambitious book is produced in association with the National Film Archive of India and the British Film Institute.

The scope of the new revised edition includes a capsule chronicle of Indian history and milestones in the Indian film industry; impressive filmographies of major directors, actors, music composers, lyricists and scenarists; plot synopses of films; film and name indices; and a thorough bibliography on the history of Indian cinema.

From 28 films produced in 1931 to 948 in 1990 and 793 in 1995, India boasts the world's largest national film industry with dream factories in Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, churning out Urdu-Hindi Bollywood musicals and important regional art films. Assamese, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Gujerati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Tamil and Telegu cinema is included in this paperback edition which covers a vast landscape from the birth of silent movies and talkies to mainstream productions and documentaries up to 1995.

Cinema is but another idiom of complex social, cultural, political, and historical influences especially in a country as diverse as India in its many regional languages, and ethnic and religious pluralism. The reader will find inspiring references to a number of art movements outside of the industry which informed filmmakers in their day. The entry on the Progressive Writers' Association, that brings into focus such stalwarts as Premchand, Ismat Chughtai, Ali Sardar Jafri, Krishan Chander, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Sadat Hasan Manto, among other luminaries, is especially invigorating. The Indian People's Theatre Association, Parsee Theatre, and political movements such as the Naxalite and Swadeshi, provide "elaborate cross-references to other, more directly, more cinematic entries."

The A to Z of this remarkable index of artistes starts with Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, a prodigious director and scenarist "mainly in the socialist-realist mode," to Zubeida, a real life princess, daughter of the Nawab of Sachin, who played the lead in "Alam Ara," India's first sound film released 14 March 1931. The Film index is chronological and starts with the release in 1912 of the 12 foot silent film "Pundalik" by P. R. Tipnis and N. G. Chitre, adapted from Ramrao Kirtikar's Marathi stage play about the Hindu saint. The last entry is a 158 minute megabudget Tamil musical, released in 1996 called "Kadhal Desum," written and directed by Kadir with Vineet, Abbas, and Tabu as lead players and music by A. R. Rehman. This is the only film entry for the year 1996.

The Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema is really a loving tribute to the amazing men and women who made the film industry the most prolific in the world.

      Book Description

Key to developing national security strategy is figuring out what other countries want. What are their national interests? How do they perceive them? How do they project them onto the world stage? Understanding all of this helps us to predict their behavior. In developing a national security strategy for Asia, the United States must take into account the desires of two emerging giants of the 21st century: China and India. We would be mistaken, Lal argues, if we lumped China and India together in one Asian policy, because these two countries differ greatly from one another. Based on over 120 in-depth interviews with government officials and scholars in Beijing and New Delhi, the author's research yields some surprising news about the differences between China and India. Chinese leaders define their national interest as preservation of the state and territorial unity, whereas Indian decision makers define their national interests in relation to forces beyond India, such as the forces of globalization and their geopolitical status. One factor that accounts for these differences, among the many explored in this book, is the influence of one-party rule in China and parliamentary democracy in India. Another important finding is that China and India are unlikely to pursue hostility with each other. The U.S. approach to Asia will need to take these differences into account.

UNDERSTANDING CHINA AND INDIA: SECURITY IMPLICATIONS FOR THE UNITED STATES AND THE WORLD is a 'must' for college-level students of either nation: it covers all the insights needed to understand a national security strategy for Asia and the interactions between two emerging powers who are very different in their approaches. Eighty detailed interviews with government officials and scholars in Beijing and New Delhi profile these differences, defining national interests of each nation and how these interests interact on the global market. From differences in political structure and objectives to party influences and interactions with the U.S., UNDERSTANDING CHINA AND INDIA is an essential guide.

Any student of Yoga will want to know more about not only the practices of Yoga but also its history and spirituality. One of the best places to turn is to Georg Feuerstein's acclaimed Shambhala Encyclopedia of Yoga. With more than 100 illustrations (such as the many asana postures and chakra centers) and entries on everything from the Bhagavad Gita to Swami Vivekananda and from the Aryan invasion theory to biofeedback, you can't go wrong. Extensive cross-references also facilitate searches for both English and Sanskrit versions of terms. The Shambhala Encyclopedia is a complete yet concise guide to the galaxy of Yoga.

        Book Description

This comprehensive desktop encyclopedia gives an authentic portrayal of a rich and highly complex spiritual tradition of India, with its history, its many approaches, schools, and teachers, its scriptures, and its technical terminology. The book is arranged and written so that, in spite of the wealth of detail provided, it will inform rather than overwhelm the lay reader, while at the same time offering valuable references for the professional researcher and historian of religion. Among its unique features:
Each entry has cross-references providing pertinent conceptual links.
Entries are in English alphabetical order, unlike
comparable reference works that follow Sanskrit alphabetical order, which is difficult for the lay reader to follow.
Orientational entries furnish an overview of central aspects to the Yoga tradition, such as history, psychology, and major branches.
Many entries cite or even quote original sources, shedding light on how a given term is used by traditional Yoga authorities.
The Shambhala Encyclopedia of Yoga is a thoroughly updated Edition, expanded with 400 new entries, of Dr. Feuerstein's Encyclopedic Dictionary of Yoga , which received the Outstanding Academic Book of the Year Award for 1991 from Choice magazine.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars thank goodness .......2006-11-07

This book makes learning about yoga (with all those sanscrit words) so much easier to understand.

        1 out of 5 stars Yoga History.......2005-10-25

This book is primarily concerned with the history of yoga and source texts, with very little attention paid to the practice of yoga. Of the hundreds of yogasanas, only a handful are covered (possibly as few as twenty) and there is zero coverage of yoga as it has evolved in the West over the past 40 years and no mention of Iyengar or Bikram. If you are a practitioner of yoga then you will find little of practical value in this book. If you are an armchair yogi with an interest in history, you will find what you want here.

        5 out of 5 stars Indispensable !!.......2004-07-19

The Shambala Encyclopedia of Yoga contains more than 2380 terms associated with Yoga, terms spanning millenia of Yoga history right from the Vedas till the modern age. No serious student of Yoga can afford not to have this book.

One can savour the online version of this encyclopedia at Georg Feuerstein's website Traditional Yoga Studies (web address: http://www.yrec.info). Each term of this encyclopedia contains a wealth of information on Yoga.

        5 out of 5 stars A sterling reference work.......2004-04-04

This encyclopedia is simply the best one available on the subject of yoga. The author knows his stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable, lively and a pleasure to read.......2002-05-03

This book stands alone in English. There is simply nothing else like it. Feuerstein is the leading academic expert on yoga in the United States while Shambhala is the leading publisher of books on yoga, so it is not surprising that this is clearly a superior work that fills a void. As such it is a boon to scholars and practitioners alike.

It is also very well cross-referenced so that a reader may, by following the starred words, begin or expand his own study of yoga. There is a guide to pronunciation of the Sanskrit words, numerous bits of black and white artwork and photos, and an engaging and informative introduction by Feuerstein. This handsome book has all those words that you won't find in even an unabridged English dictionary, defined and given their expression in an historical and spiritual context. Anyone with more than a passing interest in yoga will find this book invaluable.

I should add that this is a revised and greatly expanded edition of Dr. Feuerstein's Encyclopedic Dictionary of Yoga (1990), and that it dwarfs both Ernest Wood's Yoga Wisdom (1970) and Harvey Day's Yoga Illustrated Dictionary (1971), which I have enjoyed, but which are also very much out of date.

For Dr. Feuerstein's revision (due circa 2010, I would imagine) perhaps some entries on Westerners (and contemporaries) who have contributed to the study and practice of yoga would be appropriate, including, e.g., Theos Bernard (I was pleased to see eleven photos herein of Bernard demonstrating asana), Richard Hittleman, B.K.S. Iyengar, Swami Vishnudevananda, and others.

Bottom line: this is an up to date, thorough, and lively work of reference without peer.

          Book Description

Beginning in 1350, in regions that are now Bihar and Bengal in northeast India, there was produced a vast literature embodying a methodology that not only provides a high point in Indian philosophy but also became extremely influential in many other branches of Indian thought, including law, jurisprudence, and literary theory. This volume, the sixth in Karl Potter's monumental series, deals with that literature. Thirty-three works by fifty authors dating from 1350 to 1510 represent the philosophy of Nyaya-Vaisesika in the early stages of what was to become known as Navyanyaya, the "new" Nyaya. An extensive introduction is included. The major works treated in this volume are Gangesa's initial masterpiece, Tattvacintamani, and its remarkable commentary by Raghunatha Siromani.

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Could have been a great book.......2007-09-19

The author is a highly respected Hindu spiritual guru, and has deep knowledge of Hindu traditions. The present book is primarily a Hindu response to muck-raking and mud-slinging which many Hindus feel is the main output of Western scholarship.

The title of the book is slightly misleading, though the word 'True' should have been a warning. I bought this book eagerly hoping for a learned elucidation of Indian religious history. Unfortunately, the book turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. A large part of the book has been devoted to angry attacks on Western scholars (and Western-influenced Indian scholars), who have rejected Indian and Hindu views regarding out scriptures, and have floated their own theories and ideas. While I can empathize with this, the arguments have not been presented well, and some come down to almost a kind of shouting match.

This kind of a running fight has also affected the structure and coherence of the book, as there are frequent side-trips to counter-attack the culture-raiders. Amusingly, this is somewhat reminiscent of Prof. Amartya Sen's style of writing in the 'Argumentative Indian'.

Notwithstanding this blemish, the book offers some useful information about Hindu scriptures, orthodox views of Hindu timelines, and a Hindu perspective on some of the controversial issues.

To conclude, I do humbly submit that it would be useful for us to consider carefully what the Lord himself told Arjuna (Srimad Bhagwad Gita, Ch.2, shlok 62-63): '...unfulfilled desire leads to anger, anger results in loss of judgment. This leads to loss of memory, and loss of memory leads to loss of intellect. This causes loss of 'gnan' (knowledge).'

All in all, a useful book, especially if taken with a large pinch of salt.

            1 out of 5 stars garbage.......2007-09-13

            If I could give 0 I would.
In this book one can find only hate, hate and hate towards everything which does not come from India.
Of course not any scientific proof for history of India except his own interpretation of Puranas and similar scriptures.
            Do not waste your time....

4 out of 5 stars A Hindu perspective from one learned Indians Perspective.......2006-12-19

I gave this book a four star review because it's a hard slog. You've got to be genuinely interested to delve into the details. A fabulously researched view of Hinduism and Indian History from an Indian Perspective. The winners write history and much of Indian History and thought has been, sometimes crudely and other times subtly twisted and changed by people(s) with an ulterior agenda. The author points out where this may have happened, how and the potential reasoning - from his perspective. Whether you agree or disagree, this is a breath of fresh air compared to the tired old 'cows, caste and curry' formula repeated ad nauseum. At the least it is much better than any book written by 'experts' in US universities, who seem to see Hinduism and India through a sadly myopic and sometimes downright hostile view. With friends like these... read this book for a look through Indian Eyes and not through the foggy lens of the West.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not excellent........2006-08-20

I bought this book with the idea of knowing more about the history and religion of India as the title suggests, but unfortunately, the author seem to have diverted from the main topic and gets into criticizing others works.
I was little disappointed. But, I do give due credits to the author for going into depths and trying to analyze each topics in the book, very good job.
Would I suggest this book to someone who wants to know the history and religion of India, probably a yes. I would also caution the reader not to get too carried away with each and every statments that the author has written and would urge the reader to use his/her own good judgement. Some of the author's reasoning are not that strong enough to prove a point.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Guide for hundreds of generations........2005-05-16

This book is by far the most complete and authentic history of India and the Hindu spiritual tradition available to the English speaking world. This book covers so much information that the title doesn't do it justice. The author (an established and proven Spiritual Master) provides a complete history of India dating from the beginning of our Earth planet up until the present. In precise scientific and historic detail, He lists the development of every human civilization on this earth, explaining the development of their language, cultural shifts, the transforming of religious beliefs etc. In AMAZING detail the author gives perfect dates, names, and proven historic details that show how Hinduism has been mutilated by Western (and some Indian) writers which has confused the entire world for thousands of years. The book explains in perfect common language the source and common thread of all the Hindu scriptures in an unmatched style. Come to find out this book has been hailed by hundreds of authors and writers from around the world as the most factual and amazing book on Hinduism OF THIS AGE. The book is rather large and a few of it's chapters do read much like a text book simply because of the vast information it's explaining; However in VERY easy to read, basic common English sentences. Anyone could easily read and understand this book and I recommend it for extensive or casual study and especially for students doing research papers. A HUGE list of sources, an index and a glossary help the reader understand and elaborate the book. A vast website has been created by the author that captures the essence of the book on a web-format. http://encyclopediaofauthentichinduism.org I highly recommended this book to EVERYONE, looking to get a true and accurate spiritual history of not only Hinduism but a spiritual history of the entire world. Words cannot explain the wisdom and clarity this book contains.
