Book Description

This companion book to the HBO documentary of the same name sheds light on the hidden American epidemic of addiction. Blending compelling personal narratives with statistics and expert opinion, all gleaned from over two years of research and reporting, ADDICTION offers a comprehensive and provocative look at the impact of chemical dependency on addicts, their loved ones, society, and the economy. Breaking the stigma that addicts are simply weak and immoral, it delves into new brain research proving that drugs and alcohol change the chemical composition of addicts' brains, making it veritably impossible for them to quit. The nation's top experts persuasively argue that the time has come for the blame to stop and the healing to begin.

ADDICTION also features material not included in the documentary: testimonials, original graphics and images, additional elaboration on theories and treatments of addiction, and more. Featuring a foreword by Sheila Nevins, the president of Documentary and Family Programming at HBO, an afterward by the best-selling author Susan Cheever, and the writing of David Sheff, this book is essential reading for anyone who has been impacted by what is now realized to be a very real and widespread disease.

Book Description

The story of the most dangerous triple–agent in US history, by intrepid investigative reporter Peter Lance.

Peter Lance, author of the highly acclaimed 1000 Years for Revenge and Cover Up, returns to uncover the story of Ali Mohamed–a trusted security advisor of Osama bin Laden who hoodwinked the United States for more than a decade. As Lance reveals for this first time, this one man served in a series of high–security position within the United States security establishment–as a Special Forces advisor, FBI informant, and CIA operative–while simultaneously helping orchestrate the al Qaeda campaign of terror that led to 9/11.

In October 2000, after tricking three U.S. intelligence agencies for almost two decades, Ali Mohamed appeared in handcuffs and a blue prison jumpsuit in a Federal District courtroom on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where he pleaded guilty five times. His crimes included brokering terror summits, financing an attack on two Black Hawk helicopters, training jihadis in improvised bomb building and the creation of secret cells. And yet for decades Mohamed had lived the life of a Silicon Valley computer executive. How did this evildoer move in and out of and around the U.S.? How did he become a naturalized citizen, marry an American woman and infiltrate three of America's top intelligence agencies–the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the FBI? With utter complacence, ruthlessness, and ease, and with no small amount of oversight from the outflanked U.S. intelligence community.

From the Able Danger scandal of the Clinton Administration to today's CIA Leakgate, Mohamed appears at nearly every crucial turn of America's terror probes. An important final piece to the 9/11 investigation, Triple Cross penetrates Mohamed's secret past and the dark reaches of Al Qaeda to reveal the danger that still threatens America–and the staggering errors of America's homeland security.

5 out of 5 stars Triple Cross by Peter Lance.......2007-09-06

Triple Cross is scary when you realize the government
cover ups which could have stopped 9/11. The work done
by Peter Lance to uncover these facts is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Work.......2007-07-05

Peter Lance has produced a magnificent book. His work needs to be followed up by multiple congessional committees and numerous on air investigative reports. Patrick Fitzgerald, Jack Cloonan, Dietrick Snell, and other highranking DOJ and FBI officials must testify under oath in primetime on national television. Peter Lance should be the lead investigator for the hearing. Americans have no idea the scope of the war against alqaeda. this is much older than 9/11. We have been at war with them since 1989.

I-49, Alec Station and Able Danger need to throughly examined for their inability to connect the dots before 9/11. I-49 was the FBI-DOJ BinLaden taskforce run by Patrick Fitzgerald. Alec Station was the CIA's BinLaden group. Able Danger was the Pentagons data-mining operation that linked Ali Mohammed (top alqeada spy linked with all major cells in the world and the US), Mohammed Atta (lead hijacker on 9/11), Ramzi Yousef (1st WTC bomber and, airliner bombing plots), Egyptian Islamic Jihad Cleric Sheik Abdul Rahman, and Osama BinLaden.

This book proves that the FBI cannot fight terrorism
we need to copy the british domestic intelligence service, MI5.

WE NEED TO HAVE ANSWERS. THIS BOOK IS A GREAT FIRST STEP... MUCH MORE WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE. HIGH RANKING OFFICIALS HAVE A LOT OF EXPLAINING TO DO...

4 out of 5 stars communication breakdown.......2007-05-13

Convincing me that information gathered by our best intelligence agencies and personnel we Americans trust in the security of our great country could be such idiots is truly scary. What a fantastic insite into not only how these agencies work but who is able to "work" them.

5 out of 5 stars The real story!.......2007-03-22

This is the best of many books written in the aftermath of 9/11 because it ties up many loose ends of earlier books as more information has become available. Whether right or left, everyone should value this book, and no one will ever again wonder whether anyone in the government knew or should have known about it before it happened. Although no one should consider this a "hit" piece on the government, Lance provides compelling proof that multiple government officials were either grossly negligent in failing to uncover 9/11 or willfully chose not to investigate matters that would have led them to discover the plot, for their own selfish reasons, for example, to cover up other bad behavior.

Book Description

For more products found within this products catagory click here. Why can't I stop eating? If, like millions of others, you often ask yourself this question, you may be addicted to food. The food you eat may be precisely what makes you crave more . . . and more. This straight-talking book puts the widespread problem of food addiction into clear perspective and points the way to a life free of the obsession with food. Debbie Danowski, whose food addiction nearly ruined her life, and Peter Lazaro combine forces to give readers a full understanding of this debilitating condition: its sources, patterns, consequences, and physiological underpinnings. Unlike fad diets and drugs with their side effects, hidden costs, and infamous failure rates, the program outlined in this book goes to the root cause of chronic overeating and puts the tools for a lifelong cure into the hands of anyone willing to accept responsibility for a healthy, happy future. Debbie Danowski is a recovering food addict who has maintained a weight loss of 150 pounds for more than ten years. A nationally renowned speaker, she is an instructor of media studies at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. Pedro Lazro, M.D., is a former medical director of three addiction hospitals. He currently maintains his private practice in Tampa, Florida.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2004-10-10

I was really disappointed when I read this book. If you've read the 12 steps of compulsive overeating, then you've pretty much read this book. It tells you the same thing. It takes forever to get you to the place where you can create your own meal plan...and what a joke! There's no way I can stick to something like that. I would starve too death!

In conclusion, I do NOT recommend buying this book. It did not help me at all.

1 out of 5 stars Traditional 12 step approach.......2003-10-12

After I read the book and was very disappointed, I went on-line to write this review. I find myself agreeing completely with the reviews that gave this book a low rating. It is yet another attempt to espouse the virtues of the 12 step Overeaters Anonymous program. While I think there are good aspects of the 12 step program and that it may help some, there are many that the program simply wouldn't work for, including myself. Mainly, I think, because it mandates that you cut flour, sugar, and other foods completely from your diet. I feel that this sets a person up to fail because one ends up feeling deprived, which leads to binging. In fact there is a whole chapter in the book that talks about case studies and nearly every person mentioned has relapsed and is valiantly trying to get back to abstinence and lose the weight yet again. I would suggest that instead of working a program that obviously isn't working, they should perhaps seek another solution, maybe in the form of professional counseling. I would recommend "The Solution" by Laurel Mellin, which is a comprehensive support solution with groups and pyschologists around the country practicing the methods given in the book. I have found this method much more helpful than Overeaters Anonymous ever was. If OA is working for you, then I think that is great, but if you are like me and do not find that it fits you, I encourage you to look elsewhere. The Solution is a great place to start, and if you want to check out the website go to WWW.Sweetestfruit.com.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2003-08-12

What a disappointment! The authors answer to binge-eating is simply eliminating all sugar, flour, fat, caffeine, or whatever your trigger foods are from your diet. Not only that, but they insist you must weigh and measure your food all the time for the rest of your life. Thats hardly what I consider freeing yourself from obsessing about food. They actually recommend keeping an emergency food kit in your car to be sure you always have measuring cups, a food scale, and several cans of safe food available to you at all times. Perhaps this is wise advice for people who are morbidly obese, but for those of us who are at a normal weight, or only slightly over, and are looking for some insight and realistic advice on dealing with compulsive/binge eating, this book is NOT the answer!

4 out of 5 stars So right, it scared me.......2003-08-12

The more I read this book, the more I find out about myself and my addiction. It has been so much more helpful than any of the several books I have read previously. If you know you have a binging disorder, or even just think you do, reading this book will help you find peace with it...and maybe a road to recovery from it.

Book Description

This book, the first ever written for savers and their families, provides an overview of compulsive hoarding and how it relates to obsessive-compulsive disorder. It discusses hoarding broadly, offering readers perspectives on the physical, behavioral, and value-oriented aspects of the condition. Readers can use its assessment tools to help decide why they or their loved one hoards. Skill-building exercises help readers determine how to beat the hoarding problem by addressing issues that often underlie compulsive saving. Even though this is fundamentally a self-help book, it contains a frank discussion about the need for professional help in some hoarding cases, how to find it, and what medications have been proven effective for savers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars digging out of a mountain.......2007-05-12

Compulsive hoarding is a dirty little secret in America. If you have a friend or family member who will never allow you into their home, that is a big red flag warning you that they are afflicted with this disorder.
Someone who cannot bear to part with anything someone else would consider minor, such as junk mail, twist ties, broken pens and pencils--to the point there are literally hundreds or thousands of such items and it affects their ability to walk through their living space is a compulsive hoarder.
Everyone has a bit of the pack rat in them, this book helps the person, and especially the families of such individuals, identify this disorder and gives a method of dealing with the consequences.

4 out of 5 stars This is not you average "clutter" book.......2007-02-28

This book is so good, I couldn't read it all in one sitting, in that I didn't want to distill the feeling that it gave me in the beginning, for fear the author would destroy it all with nonsense words. It has opened possibilties I'd never before considered. It's made me think differently about why I can't let go of things. And after reading this book, for the first time in my life, I'm coming closer to understanding why what is material is important to me.
And by "material," I mean, just old photographs, my grandmother's wedding gown, my great-grandmother's piano, stuff like that. This book explains how it's not important.
But maybe this author didn't go through watching almost everyting destroyed through three hurricanes, two floods, and an absent-minded tornado. So I also feel a bit of angst when someone living in a highrise in New York writes a book explaining to me why "material" things are important to me....and shouldn't be.
At the same time, the writer made some good points and I'm going to try and follow them. Honest.

2 out of 5 stars Assumuptions narrow the field for this self help book .......2007-02-07

Covering a limited range of emotional reasons for this compulsion & how to address them. Useful to those particular sufferers..
But if like me, hoping to help a family member with their hoarding, whose particular attitudes & reactions aren't mentioned anywhere, not really much help.
I did learn a few things - the difference between OCPD & OCD.. Not the book it claims to be..
Strongly suggest reading review by Betsy1479 (Jan. 18th).

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful.......2007-02-05

Being a long-time hoarder, I found this book to be quite helpful and very practical. It shows people how to: interrupt obsessive thinking; change compulsive behavior; and confront distorted beliefs. It is clearly written, very user friendly and quite effective. I do recommend it to anyone with hoarding issues. I also suggest 'Brain Lock' by Jeffrey Schwartz as helpful for this problem. Frankly, I am very glad to have found this book - it is helping me turn things around. It really is never too late to change.

2 out of 5 stars No understanding of hoarding or related emotions.......2007-01-19

From reading this book, I would guess that the authors have not really worked with any hoarders, but thought that they could write a book about behavior modification, and sell it to hoarders. They do not understand the hoarding syndrome or the thought processes involved.
The book covers a few generally accepted theories about hoarding, has a brief section on medication, and then describes a few behavior modification techniques and tells the reader to apply them to hoarding. But the examples are not what most hoarders think or feel at all! Then they throw in the old chestnut of the three box sorting technique, making it "new" by calling it three and a half box organizing.
The only reason I gave it two stars, rather than no stars, is because I guess it would be better than nothing, especially if you have never heard of behavior modification, or would like to learn a little about medications that might be helpful to hoarders.
"Conquering Chronic Disorganization" by Judith Kolberg, is a much better choice for hoarders. Her section on "Emotional Organizing" is brilliant. She handles the topic with humor and understanding. If you already have Kolberg's book, and know about medications, then save your money. The techniques in this book won't be much help.

Psychiatric drugs are prescribed to more than 20 million Americans. This book aims to convince us to stop taking these drugs, and to show us how to do it safely. The authors contend that after 15 minutes with a physician or psychiatrist, Americans are prescribed medications that we may take for years or a lifetime, which can do more harm than good. We're irritable, anxious, emotionally numbed, physically fatigued, and mentally dulled. Yet when we stop taking the drugs, we encounter a whole new set of problems and setbacks.

The book lists the adverse medical reactions you may encounter, plus additional personal, psychological, and philosophical reasons for limiting or rejecting psychiatric drugs. About half the book covers withdrawing from your drug--how to do it carefully and slowly, what to expect, and how to get help--with specifics for certain drugs and a chapter on easing your child off them as well.

If you suffer from depression or another condition that warrants taking prescription drugs, you might refute the authors' contention that "the degree to which we suffer indicates the degree to which we are alive. When we take drugs to ease our suffering, we stifle our psychological and spiritual life." Certainly it would be lovely if we could "find a way to untangle that twisted energy and to redirect it more creatively," but is this really possible in all cases? The authors blame our dependence on drugs and psychiatry on big pharmaceutical-company bucks, psychiatric organizations, and even government agencies. Certainly we are an overmedicated society--but is the answer to take everyone off drugs? This provocative book says yes, and it's bound to be controversial.

Of course, do not go off any prescribed medication without working closely with the medical professional who prescribed it, and do not use this book as a substitute for professional help. --Joan Price

Book Description

The first book to guide patients and doctors through the process of withdrawing from psychiatric drugs.

Psychiatric drugs are prescribed to more than twenty million Americans but can these drugs do more harm than good?

While a doctor may take fifteen minutes to determine the need for a psychiatric drug, the patient may end up taking it for months, years, or a lifetime. We deserve to know the dangers in advance -including the difficulties we may encounter when trying to withdraw. Your Drug May Be Your Problem is the only book to provide an up-to-date, uncensored description of the dangers involved in taking every kind of psychiatric medication, and it is the first and only book to explain how to coordinate a safe withdrawal from them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book.......2007-06-18

I take issue with Publisher's Weekly for saying the authors are dogmatic. Unfortunately, few people understand what is going on with the drug industry unless they've been caught up in the hell of drug discontinuation themselves.

Many publications are afraid to speak out against the powerful drug companies. Some of these are supported by drug advertisements.

Few doctors see what is happening because they are doublebooked, getting their patients in and out. Psychiatrists prescribe drugs all too easily. And many patients who take psych drugs are not supervised by their doctors to check for adverse affects.

I salute Breggins and Cohen for taking risks to go against the powerful status quo. Because of them, people who have developed an accidental dependence on these drugs have somewhere to turn to figure out what to do.

I tried the drug Effexor once, and I felt like jumping out the window. My doctor told me to keep taking it for two weeks to see if I adapted. I couldn't get through another day.

I am also one of many who stumbled upon the drug Klonopin. I took it for a few months only, and it has taken me over two years to discontinue the drug. I'd previously taken tranquilizers with no problem stopping. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd get violently ill while tapering off these drugs.

I have met others in a similar situation who've been diagnosed "bi-polar" because the withdrawal symptoms from these drugs make people appear crazy. Consumers and their doctors need to learn the truth about these drugs. And Your Drug May Be Your Problem tells it like it is.

After discussing symptoms caused by various psych drugs, the book explains how to taper with the 10 percent method and goes over symptoms of withdrawal. The authors give guidance to help therapists use other tools besides treating their patients with drugs. And finally, there are some great suggestions on how a depressed or anxious person may get back on track.

Your Drug May Be Your Problem is a courageous book that will enlighten readers who have given control of their minds and bodies to their doctors, drug companies and the FDA.

5 out of 5 stars go NATURAL -- symptoms or side effects?.......2007-03-31

"I am sane, intelligent, and self-respecting." Another reviewer wrote these words. Yes! I relate, having been misdiagnosed too. Honestly, we have to diagnose ourselves. If I trace back, I find that my physcial health began to decline when I was 14, and my mental health declined from age 20 on. My story might be different from yours, but my personal responsibility to FOLLOW MY INSTINCTS is very much the same. I have chosen to treat my symptoms naturally with True Hope (google it). I had precious little family support in my decision... until it started working, that is!

I have suffered tremendously from antidepressant side effects that have come back 7 years after taking my last pill, and often triggered by things like taking vitamins, getting exercise, or losing weight. Here's a simple test anyone can do to find out what side effect is coming from psychiatric drugs: drink a protein shake like weight trainers do. The body eliminates the drugs on the protein in your digestive tract. I have had days that protein every two hours was all that kept me from shaking like a leaf from the drugs releasing into my system. If I hadn't known what was going on I would have thought I was losing my mind. If you're on psych drugs currently it COULD INTERFERE with their function, but after you go off them as described in this book or under the care of a doctor, protein is a life saver.

I wish every doctor who said "your symptoms are coming back," would have patients drink a protein shake there in the office, wait 15 minutes, and then re-evaluate. Symptoms??? Or SIDE EFFECTS!

It is worth pointing out that the side effect list for a given drug is often similar to the symptom list -- google your drug name and "side effect" to read up. Side effects like depression, anxiety, headaches, fatigue, digestive problems...)

Today I'm healthier than I have been since I was in high school. Information is power!

3 out of 5 stars How about some nuance?.......2007-02-18

Most reviews of this book are extreme. Either they think Dr. Breggin is a buffoon and shouldn't be allowed to practice medicine, or he is a god whose every word is holy writ. How about a little nuance?

I believe the pharmaceutical industry is EXTREMELY corrupt, and many doctors overprescribe. But some people make major improvement from drugs.

Are research studies for psych meds biased? Yes, I think they are. They have a positive bias because Big Pharma sometimes tries to suppress clinical trials that are less than favorable. I absolutely believe this. But some people do seem to benefit from psychiatric medication, especially people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Also, there is a different alternative besides MEDS or NO MEDS. It's possible to be on medication TEMPORARILY, but many people seem keenly unaware of this. Just because your doctor puts you on a psych med doesn't mean you have to take it forever. Some people stay on them for years, but some take them for six months to a year and then go off them, the same way you might take pain medication temporarily after an injury.

If somebody is taking medication, any kind of medication, I wouldn't suggest going off it or reducing your doseage without guidance from the person who prescribed it. If you don't want to take meds for your emotional distress, you need to mention this to the person treating you.
Any practitioner worth his or her salt will try to respect your choices.

5 out of 5 stars very informative.......2007-01-11

this is an excellent book! clear and direct and very helpful in the study of using medication to treat "mental"/emotional problems. This is a worthy read. written by medical doctors who are up to date on their information. a great book!

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Information on Psychiatric Drugs.......2006-11-10

This is a very detailed and well-researched book on the reasons psychiatric drugs can be harmful and the best ways to come off of them safely. The book contains several specific chapters dealing with the effects of certain types of drugs, their affects, and their side-affects. Over all, this is an extremely helpful book for anyone considering or currently on psychiatric drugs.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Read but a Bit Light on Entreprenuership How To.......2007-06-28

Good quick read about a man that stumbled into being a lifelong entreprenuer because he could see opportunities and was not afraid to start businesses to exploit them. I admire the author because he is introspective enought to realize what he is good at and what he is not and how that effects his ability to start and grow companies. He admits his mistakes but gives you insight into what are the key lessons he learned. The author recognizes that fanatical focus on providing a great customer experience and customer service will build customer loyality that will allow you to overcome the mistakes that small-growing businesses make. Larger established companies should re-learn this lesson. The bottom line from this book is the Nike slogan, "Just Do It!".If you want to learn more about starting a business I would suggest other books like the Art of the Start The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything, or the classic entreprenuership book by Paul Hawken, Growing a Business Growing a Business.

If you think you've got the entrepreneurial spirit and want to embark on the startup journey, read the book by someone who's taken the trip.

Even if you're not an entrepreneur this book will provide a window into how extraordinary people take business risks.

What a ride and a great read.

Thanks for sharing it.

5 out of 5 stars Painful Entrepreneurial Lessons Reported in Good Humor.......2007-03-25

People who think they want to be entrepreneurs should read this book. In life, you can either fall down to learn all of your own lessons or you can pay attention to and learn from other peoples' experiences. I recommend the latter approach and Mr. Skorman provides an easy-to-read memoir that you can easily absorb. His range of experience will probably cover something that you are thinking about doing. I commend him for choosing to ask Catherine Guthrie to help him write the book; it flows more smoothly than 99% of the business memoirs you'll read.

I work with dozens of would-be entrepreneurs at any given time. Their motivations vary. Some want to create a huge business. Others just want to establish a business they would be proud of. Still others want to establish a certain kind of lifestyle. Some want to escape the humdrum qualities of their lives. A few have an idealistic vision of what a business could do for others. At various times, Mr. Skorman tried all of these approaches and candidly assesses the pros and cons of those perspectives.

When I first meet them, the would-be entrepreneurs have three things in common:

1. They have no idea of how to prepare to be an entrepreneur.
2. They don't understand the various processes to use in establishing a successful new business.
3. They are in a hurry.

In addition, most of would-be entrepreneurs have no understanding of how to think about customers and what might appeal to customers.

As a result, they employ what I like to call the "fire, ready, aim" school of entrepreneurship. That approach can work just fine . . . as long as you have enough energy, capital, and patience.

Most entrepreneurs are self-taught: They learn by accumulating bumps and bruises. That learning process is, however, so painful that they either don't want to talk about it or develop amnesia as time passes.

Stuart Skorman's memoir is a great resource for inexperienced entrepreneurs because he does remember how he got where he is and is willing to share with you. You follow along while he goes from starting up one venture to another and get a candid look at what he did right and wrong, and why that happened. In his biggest success, he freely describes how not paying enough attention to a deal he needed to make and to technological development cost him most of what he could have gained. You'll be there, too. When you are, remember his example.

I also find that would-be entrepreneurs think they will be married to their business for life. In drawing that conclusion, they deny themselves the opportunity to experience the joy of creation all over again . . . but with more resources and experience to guide them. I don't recall another book where an entrepreneur so often moved on to start a new enterprise and in another industry as often as Mr. Skorman has. You'll be fascinated.

Why is it that most entrepreneurs cannot repeat their success in another industry? Success is very much influenced by being in the right place at the right time with the right resources and skills. Miss one of those elements and the next enterprise may be a loser.

Mr. Skorman is also a very interesting fellow when he's not starting-up businesses. He spent the Summer of Love in San Francisco. He did a cross-country bicycle jaunt by himself. He spent two years earning a living as a professional poker player. He also managed a rock band. You'll enjoy those parts, too.

In understanding Mr. Skorman's perspective, it's helpful to remember that he is primarily a marketing thinker who sees deep needs that aren't being met and can conceptualize very extreme ways to improve on what exists. That talent is best exhibited in his experience with Empire Video where he conceptualized a whole new approach to video rental stores that greatly expanded the market in the geographies that he served. I suggest that you read that case with the most attention for what's needed to succeed. There were few false steps because he deeply understood the needs of video renters. I was so impressed with this case that I summarized it for some of my entrepreneurial students.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, read the case of Elephant Pharmacy to show you how wealth and comfort can induce bad habits into what may well be a good business idea. As the ultimate story of "ready, fire, aim" I commend his story of HungryMinds.com.

Although the chapters end up with entrepreneurial lessons, I suggest that you think of these not as general lessons . . . but rather as the lessons than you can draw from Mr. Skorman's example. He didn't study what other entrepreneurs do and don't do, so you shouldn't treat this book as a literal business text. It's more like an annotated series of cases.

As his career evolves in the future, I hope Mr. Skorman will favor us with an updated edition of this book at some point.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and fun to read.......2007-03-13

This is one of those well written book that you can't stop reading. Stuart Skorman shares his story with tears and joys. Unlike some entrepreneur books shares only the glory, there are many humble confessions and valuable lessons to learn for both seasonal and start-up entrepreneurs.

Book Description

Two leading experts on gender issues in the workplace describe how indirect aggression among women undermines their professional and personal success, and explain how to change conflict into cooperation.

Following the success of Queen Bees and Wannabes and Odd Girl Out, about aggression in girls, In the Company of Women explains how indirect, or "relational," aggression can hurt women and hinder them from achieving success and harmony in their adult lives. Gender studies have shown that when a goal is in sight, men generally use direct action to attain it. Women, on the other hand, have been socialized to express aggressive actions through indirect means-using behavior such as shunning, stigmatizing, and gossiping to emotionally cripple those standing in the way of the achievement they seek.

With startling insights into the meaning of our everyday behavior, this book offers straightforward techniques to change conflict among women into cooperation by resolving discords peaceably, building relationships, and making the most of women's unique leadership and communication skills.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting reading.......2007-09-18

This book was pretty good. The first part validated what I pretty much figured out for myself the hard way. At least with the knowledge you get from this book that this type of behavior and attitude is universal among women everywhere and is "normal," you can deal with it more constructively or let it go more easily instead of dwelling on it. I did enjoy reading the first part of the book - probably 3/4 of the book was helpful because it validates what you know or can sense about what is going on around you, and that is empowering and reassuring. The guidance given in this book for dealing with other women is somewhat like remembering difficult algorithms though. And, unless you can convince every other woman you ever deal with to read the book and follow precisely the "rules" you have to follow in order to have perfect harmony among the women in your life, you still have to just use your gut instinct on how to deal with each particular woman or...well, you already know what will happen or you wouldn't be interested in reading this type of book! To be honest, I started reading the last part of the book (which directly relates to being in a supervisory position) and just couldn't read any more.

5 out of 5 stars Wishing everyone (men and women) would read this!.......2007-05-08

I have struggled my entire life in relationships with women. This book opened my eyes.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting theories, apply as you will.......2007-02-04

This is a thought-provoking book, and I recommend it for any woman, whether you work in an office or not. It says much about the conflicts that arise between us, the reasons behind them, and some solutions on how to handle them.

One of my favorite chapters was "Handling Conflicts With Style." I recently covered conflict styles in a college freshman seminar course, and I appreciated how they were expanded in this chapter. There are some interesting paragraphs on ow to handle sabotage and deliberate distractions, two things I have experienced firsthand and was poor at resonding to.

There are many wonderful suggestions in the chapter "How To Be An Effective Female Leader." Several aspects of leadership are discussed, and skills are suggested in detail, to balance the troubles many female leaders experience.

There are some parts of the book, however, that I do no agree with.

Although the Power Dead-Even Rule is absolutely true in every respect, it does little to solve the problem that I have with power-hungry, conrolling women in my work environment. Honestly, why should I care what gets a co-worker to turn against me? Of course, having some knowledge of the root of the problem is extremely beneficial at maintaining some sort of balance. At the end of the day, however, I am able to put my head on the pillow and fall asleep based simply on the advice I received from a dear friend:

It's not my business what other people think of me.

This may sound like foolish advice at first, but you know what? It's TRUE.

And the advice to use gossip as a tool is WAY off the mark. I have been able to maintain my position at my job for many years based on a principle that I believe deeply in - that gossip does NOTHING to improve anyone's character. You want to build trust among your coworkers? Don't gossip!! Find something else in common to discuss.

I'm a little irritated at the excuses given for indirect aggression - you know what? A person's personal issues should be worked out before or after work, there's no excuse for a bitch.

Downplaying your achievements is good to keep in mind. But ultimately, you really should be yourself, not a puppet. My point is, when you apply what you gain from this book, don't forget what you have learned before.

5 out of 5 stars This Book has Changed my Life........2006-05-08

I have to say, I felt pretty disgusted with myself, having to pretend to be insecure and self-depreciating, just to get other women to like me. But by God it works.

I tested the techniques out on my very next female customer. I refused to accept her compliments, kept downplaying myself and my accomplishments, while praising her instead and pointing out all the ways in which I felt she was better.

Result: She LOVED me. We actually linked arms and skipped! No kidding! She convinced her husband to give me $500 on a job that wasn't worth half that much money.

Not only is this book helpful in avoiding petty jealousy, the evil eye, and female sabotage, applied to business situations it can be a real cash cow!!! $$$

Take those psychology books that advise you to "Project Self Confidence!" and "Toot Your Own Horn!" and throw them in the garbage. If you are not a man, that will not work for you.

This one tip alone will save your friendships: Don't you dare ever tell a woman good news. If you have good news tell a man. If you have bad news tell a woman.

If you're just bustin' to tell all the girls how your new boyfriend is rich, famous and hunky, DON'T, unless you a have your own personal security detail and somebody willing to start your car for you.

If they find out anyway, make your good fortune sound negative. Tell them he beats you and he slept with your sister. : P

I can sum the whole book up for you: Women can't stand to see another woman happy, especially if they're not. Better learn how to operate within the "Power Dead Even" Rule.

5 out of 5 stars Women Working Wisely.......2006-02-06

This book has been an invaluable reference and resource for me. Pat Heim's experience in addressing relationally aggressive behaviors between women in the workplace shows through in every page she writes. With "In the Company of Women" she adds one more feather to her impressive cap and advances each reader's understanding of this important issue.

Book Description

According to William Ury, it takes two sides to fight, but a third to stop. Distilling the lessons of two decades of experience in family struggles, labor strikes, and wars, he presents a bold new strategy for stopping fights. He also describes ten practical roles--as managers, teachers, parents, and citizens--that each of us can play every day to prevent destructive conflict.

Fighting isn't an inevitable part of human nature, Ury explains, drawing on his training as an anthropologist and his work among primitive tribes and modern corporations. We have a powerful alternative--The Third Side--which can transform our daily battles into creative conflict and cooperation at home, at work, and in the world.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Flow of Positivity.......2007-08-10

From his experience with working with children, married couples, business disputes, international conflict and more, William Ury demonstrates that an alternative to anger and violence is not only possible but much more productive and rewarding for all parties involved.

Although Ury specifies indentification and processes involved in all its various forms, you will not find much extrapilation here. Reading this provides a person that may be interested in dealing with conflict (whether at home, or at work, or even politically) a solid starting point and an enlightened positivity towards a more detail study on the subject.

Just a little more than 200 pages. The cover is treated to be fairly resistant to the elements so feel free to pass this along to friends or keep it on the coffee table for a quick reference to its diagrams.

If you have to develop a power point slide show on mediation, this is a big helper. Visit the website for more resources. [...]

2 out of 5 stars Not so Provocative..........2006-04-14

The "third-side" idea of Ury's book was a neat one. I think that his idea of recognizing a third-side, may it be another person/people or a motivating force, and allowing it to assist in nonviolent conflict resolution is neat in that it helps us individually recognize the will to 'resolve'. I just don't know if that whole idea is actually that stimulating.
There is an over-simplification in his methodologies which proved to be a significant downfall of this book. Much of his examples were underdeveloped and it seems as if he molds the examples to fit his opinion, instead of his opinion fitting into the examples. The major dissappointment for me in the book was that he writes of other people and other cultures through the employment of racist techniques and makes it seem as though every conflict is simple enough that it can eventually just be "talked out".

4 out of 5 stars The Third Side is the Best Side.......2004-11-17

An acclaimed negotiator and author of previous best sellers, "Getting to Yes" and "Getting Past No", William Ury first titled this book, "Getting to Peace". He later reverted to the original working title in order to de-emphasize the focus on global conflict, as he is a recognized world expert in peacekeeping negotiations. Instead he deals with conflict at all levels, from the family to the workplace and from the community to the world.

This is a 251-page paperback, written by an anthropologist who is concerned for his own human tribe, as he explores the reasons we are in conflict and sets forward a roadmap to resolution. In the first of three parts to the book, Ury describes the Third Side as the inside and outside factors to a dispute between two sides and explores the potential in recognizing its existence. Essentially, the Third Side is the neutral third party to such conflict.

In the fascinating second part, he examines the concept of fighting as an element of human nature from an archeological standpoint and points out that there was little organized violence in the first 99% of human history. As we moved from a society of hunters and gatherers to an agricultural and then an industrial society, the expandable pie became fixed and the potential for conflict increased. The recent technological change to a society based on knowledge has the potential for re-expanding the pie and allows for coexistence rather than coercion.

In the third segment, the author offers some solutions to prevent, resolve and contain conflict before it escalates to violent outcomes. He suggests that potential "third-siders" can transform conflict by assuming roles based on ten reasons for the escalation of disputes. He ends by challenging the reader to consider a number of steps towards mobilizing the third side.

As with the other books he has co-authored, William Ury has presented some interesting ideas in a thoroughly readable format. In particular, his use of stories to illustrate these concepts is marvelous. They range from the basic fights between the Bushmen of Africa to the politically charged wars between nations in the Middle East. This is a provocative book and one that is extremely pertinent in today's contentious society.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best book on mediation there is.......2004-10-19

This is *the* definitive book on conflict management by the uber-guru of negotiation and mediation. Ury has mediated in the Middle East, the Balkans, N. Ireland and many other places.

Fighting is natural and human, and is the ultimate approach. But it is destructive and win-lose at best. Revenge and feuding turns it into lose-lose. Ury points out how the win-lose of the agrarian society is giving way to both-win or both-lose of the knowledge society as hierarchical control is being fractured by knowledge networks.

The 'third side' is the person on the sidelines in a conflict who wants to help. Third-siders can be neighbors, neutrals, bystanders, family, friends. Event the warring parties themselves can take the third side. This book describe ten roles that this person can take.

Their goal is always to prevent conflict before it happens. Even the presence of a third person will calm conflict, but doing nothing does not optimize the help they can give.

Three strategies (and roles within each) are offered to manage increasing levels of conflict:

* Prevent (Provider, Teacher, Bridge-builder)
* Resolve (Mediator, Arbiter, Equalizer, Healer)
* Contain (Witness, Referee, Peacekeeper)

They are:
1. Provider: When there is conflict is often over scarce resources the Provider finds ways for both sides to get what they need, even deep needs such as love, safety and esteem. They can also provide knowledge to enable intelligent decisions.
2. Teacher: People often fight because they know of no other way to resolve their differences. The Teacher shows them how to handle conflict without resorting to violence and arms.
3. Bridge-builder: People in conflict often become separated by deep divides which lead to ignorant stereotyping, etc. The Bridge-builder builds ways across the dividing chasm, for example by building trust, showing how the others are human too.
4. Mediator: Where there are conflicting interests, the Mediator tries to bring them to the table. If this fails, they use shuttle diplomacy, going back and forth. Sometimes a higher authority may be able to coerce them to the table.
5. Arbiter: When there are disputed rights or when mediation fails, the Arbiter acts a judge and selects a final solution, to which both parties must agree to be bound.
6. Equalizer: Where there is unequal power, the powerful may not seek help but the powerless deserve it. Their position of greater power may cause the powerful to rethink and bring them to the table.
7. Healer: Injured relationships can fester if left alone. The Healer seeks to calm emotion and soothe hurt, for example by listening and acknowledging within a climate of healing.
8. Witness: When nobody pays attention, atrocities may be committed. The Witness needs only see and tell the truth. Just by their presence, they may also dissuade the wrong-doer.
9. Referee: When people resort to conflict without rules, people get really hurt. When you cannot stop them fighting, the Referee at least sets and polices the rules.
10. Peacekeeper: Where people are completely vulnerable, they are open to easy attack. The Peacekeeper provides safety for the victims, interpose themselves between the warring parties and enforcing the peace.

These ten roles can be played in combination, even with the same person playing more than one role.

Overall, this is a wonderful and empowering must-have book, not just for mediators but anyone who encounters or stands at any time between warring people.

2 out of 5 stars Does not show you how.......2001-11-06

This book just say that you should settle your disputes with methods such as mediation and negitiation but teach not tell you how you can do it.

A disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Why Stop! TX Roadsie Markers.......2007-07-14

I thought it would be more up to date but it isn't. There were numerous historical markers that were not noted. Maybe they have come out with a more up to date one. Otherwise the book is informative.

5 out of 5 stars Keep it in your vehicle!.......2007-02-19

This book has an alphabetical listing of the city or towns where the markers are located, with addresses or locations of each. This makes for much easier locating when you drive by a marker. My husband & I RV a lot and we keep it in our vehicle -- when we see a marker, I grab the book, look up the marker, and read the information aloud. If anyone's interested in the history of Texas, this would be a great book to add to one's collection of historical books.

5 out of 5 stars Learning as we go!.......2006-06-30

I was amazed at the number of markers in our state, and no longer have to wonder what the sites are noted for. I have traveled Texas roads all my life, and wish this book had been with me from the beginning: I would know a lot more Texas History!
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Just plain perfect!.......2005-12-28

I am so excited that I found this book. When traveling through Texas, I am always interested in the Historical Markers. However, I have a husband that drives from point A to point B, without any stops in between! Because of that, I have asked for a book that would have everything listed that I am always wanting to stop and read. I finally found this book and could not wait to get it. It came just in time for Christmas and one of our annual road trips! No complaints! Perfect in every way. Certainly worth the money, and easy to read. Very to the point, so if you want to read more on the historical marker...do the research! Thank you so much for taking the time to write a book like this and making my life so much easier!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-05-11

I wish I had thought of this idea. As you are traveling through Texas, just look up the roadside markers in the area by city or county. You can learn so much, and you don't have to take the time off your trip by stopping when you don't want too. It makes a long trip across Texas, or just sitting in your living room, a good time.

To the review that says it needed a map, yes it could have. It likely would have added a lot of pages and cost to this book. Can you imagine trying to have a detailed map for the backroads some of these markers are on? For the rest of us, the book explains clearly the location in relation to highways and roads for each marker. Just look up the highways and roads on your own map if you want to go there, and you can get there.

Book Description

Everybody feels as if they should be evangelizing someone, somewhere. In fact, most of us probably feel guilty because we're not meeting our evangelism quota for this lifetime. But sharing our faith with nonbelievers can often feel like making a sales call during dinnertime: uninvited, unacceptable, and highly unlikely to get any results. Author John Shore proposes a radical solution: Maybe it's time to take the focus off evangelism. As he builds his case with sound theology, humorous insights, and "me too" moments, John suggests that we move beyond the Great Commission and start living the Great Commandment, because the only thing better than telling someone about God's love is to let them actually experience it.

1 out of 5 stars BIG Disappointment.......2007-08-23

Mr. Shore is probably a great guy, but Theologian he's not.

His misuse of the Scriptures makes me wonder if the publisher, Navpress, even read the book.

A Buddhist highly recommended the book to me. ...that should have been my first warning sign.

No disrespect, but don't waste your time and money unless you're going to put it in the "cults" section of your library.

While I am sure John Shore has a desire to help fellow Christians, this book does nothing of the sort. Instead, it is telling Christians not to obey one of Jesus' commands. Jesus' command in Matt. 28:16-20 is to make disciples. The way we are to do this is go into the world (that means witnessing), baptize them when they make a public declaration of faith, and teach them the truth in Scripture. John mistakenly thinks that this command conflicts with the greatest commands to love God and love your neighbor. The two are not contrary to each other. Rahter, they are in harmony. If we truly love our neighbor, we will warn them of the Day of Judgment to come where people will stand before God and have to give an account of their life. If they are found in their sins, they will spend eternity in hell. Warning people of this horrible fate and telling them about of the Gospel is loving them. Likewise, if we love God we will witness since this is a command (just look at the Greek in Matt. 28:18). Jesus said in John 14:15, "If you love me, you will obey my commandments". So if we love God and want to fulfill the greatest commandment, which is to love God will all our very being, we will obey all his commands. This includes the tough ones like evangelizing. We don't get to pick and choose. Please don't let this book tickle your ears. Please don't use this book as a way out of sharing your faith. Pray to God to give you courage and be bold and speak to the lost about their eternal fate.

God bless,
Pastor Peter O'Neill

1 out of 5 stars Heretical! Shore flat out tells you to disobey Christ's command to witness!.......2007-07-21

Mr. Shore says that the Greatest Commandment (Love God and love people) is incompatible with the Great "Commission" (tell people about Christ)? How idiotic. These are two things God has commanded us to do... love others and tell others about Christ. In fact, the most loving thing we can possibly do for others is tell them about Christ.

In summary his book's real message isn't about loving God and loving people... it's about self-love. His message is, "Love yourself enough to avoid potentially uncomfortable situations that may occur during witnessing."

Poor Mr. Shore, I wonder how he could possibly actually be a Christian with this theology. It makes me heartsick that the Navigators published this garbage.

In third world countries thousands of babies are born with neonatal conjunctivitis, a serious infection of the eye that causes blindness. In 1995 an eye drop was created by UCLA that can kill the infectious bacteria and prevent sight loss. Imagine you are walking into a hut where a mother is clutching her infant. The child's eyes are red and puffy with crusted swollen lids. In your hand you have a bottle of this miraculous drug -- one drop in each eye, and this child will not go blind. However, before you can put the drops in those eyes, you're going to have to talk to the mother about the fact that something is wrong with her baby. You're going to have to say, in essence, "you're not OK."

But, imagine that you are so frightened that this may cause her to feel uncomfortable that you elect not to talk to her at all. You decide that if you're just friendly to her for a couple of months, perhaps she will ask you about the drops.

How horrific! Only the most UN-loving, self-centered, cringing, coward would elect to not speak because they were afraid of causing a little temporary discomfort!

If you really care about that woman and her poor, suffering child, you will run up to her, tell her something is wrong with her baby, and then tell her what you hold in your hand. And the same is true for evangelism. Sin is the disease, and Christ's precious blood is the miraculous cure. Sure, the person you talk to might feel initially uncomfortable... but if you really care about where they're going to spend eternity... if you really don't want to see them go to Hell... you will love that person enough to wade through that discomfort so that they get the cure.

If this book has any popularity, it can only be with those who do not believe Hell exists, and with those who are looking for an excuse not to share their faith. It is complete heresy... and utterly nonsensical.

1 out of 5 stars Shore teaches the exact opposite of scripture.......2007-07-21

I noticed something John Shore's theology. His theology is not grounded in the Bible, but rather, in a postmodern, emergent church (cult)world where people are more concerned about hurting other's feelings rather than speaking the truth in love. Where it is more important for a person to enter hell than to hurt their feelings. Gee, I guess Jesus really botched it up with the rich, young ruler and the Pharisees.

The teaching in this book is a total cop-out from seeking and saving the lost. Shore tries desperately to stand behind the greatest commandment of "Love the Lord your God and love your neighbor as yourself" which is the whole sum of the Law, yet he has totally missed the point. Warning others with a totally loving and a reasoning heart, that Hell is real and that those who have not been saved by the grace of God will be punished there, but that there some awesome good news (Gospel)is not a contradiction to God's command to love. In fact it is not loving at all when John Shore attests that he would rather not talk to a stranger about these eternal matters but rather avoid them for fear of rejection or making them mad or hurting their feelings. People's eternal souls are at stake here! We, as Christians, are those, whom have been saved from death ourselves and are now in the lifeboat (that is Christ) on our way back to the "Titanic" wading through the frozen corpses and yelling "Is anyone there?" And acting out of pure love to save those who are perishing, pulling them in from the fire.

John Shore say's that the greatest commandment to "love thy neighbor" is greater than the "great commission." Shore says that a commandment is greater than a commission and that the two are incompatible. What kind of scholarly research is this? Anyone, with the Holy Spirit indwelling, who correctly interprets the Bible knows this is a horrible way to interpret, or rather pathetic if I may be blunt. Matt. 28 and Mark 16:15 do not use the word "Commission." Jesus said "Go..." and then he tells us how to go. This is a command, not a suggestion. I believe Shore is relying on the "headers" that people have put into the Bible to help readers define sections of the Bible and he's clearly not reading the context of the passage. It seems as if he is looking at the header words "The Great Commission" in his Bible and thinking that it is scripture. In essence John Shore is telling Christians that Jesus is really contradicting himself and that one part of Jesus command is lesser than the other. This is complete and utter heresy that is being taught here, and I am very disturbed that so many people have flocked to this book. It's like the prayer of Jabez again, another heretical teaching. Everything that Jesus says weaves together in a common thread, it can and never does contradict with itself. The Word of God is God breathed, it is totally unified. Every essence of it is pure and undefiled and definitely NOT in contradiction to each other.

If you don't want to evangelize as Shore has stated that you shouldn't, then this book is for you, but keep in mind that you have violated God's command to love - which is something that Shore has emphatically stated that you shouldn't, so you're in a conundrum - because you would rather see people enter hell, than warn, reason, and share the Gospel to a stranger in love for fear that they may be upset at you. Shore totally missed what Jesus said "Unless you repent, then you will perish" And the implication there is, "in hell." We must reach the lost, in the fullness of love and compassion and obedience to Christ's command to "Go preach the Gospel..." with the unsaved so they may not perish. Why is John saying we shouldn't do this?

This book gets 4-5 stars, why? Because people want to get their ears tickled and Shore's book provides people with an easy out, after all who really wants to evangelize? (sarcasm).

5 out of 5 stars Penned with gentle charm, Christian humor, love, and understanding.......2007-07-09

Humorist and Christian writer John Shore presents I'm OK - You're Not: The Message We're Sending Nonbelievers and Why We Should Stop, a frank discussion of a crucial flaw in modern evangelical movements - that they have come to resemble sales calls made during dinnertime, and as such are just as unlikely to achieve results. Emphasizing the concept that letter others experience God's love is far more potent than simply telling them about it, I'm OK - You're Not emphasizes the importance of listening to the Great Commandment above all. The Great Commandment referred to is as spoken by Jesus Christ and recorded in the Bible: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these." Penned with gentle charm, Christian humor, love, and understanding, I'm OK - You're Not deserves to be required reading for any Christian considering embarking upon an evangelical mission or career.
