Book Description

"A sobering analysis of anti-Arab racism, from neo-conservative to liberal, rooted in America's settler colonial past and seeping into every corner of our lives. Steven Salaita takes the reader into the crisis of Arab-American communities in the wake of 9/11. Written with passion, this lucid account of the dangers of American imperialism paints a dark picture of the agenda of the Bush administration not only in the Arab world but also for people of color at home."
Miriam Cooke, Professor, Duke University

"An impassioned and deeply compelling look at the origins, evolution, manifestations and implications of anti-Arab racism today. ... A tour-de-force."
Lisa Suhair Majaj, co-editor, Etel Adnan: Critical Reflections on the Arab-American Writer and Artist and Intersections: Gender, Nation, and Community in Arab Women¹s Novels

"Salaita dives head-first into the heart of racism in America and uses his personal experiences to help readers understand the mechanics of racism as it applies to Arabs, Muslims and people who look Middle Eastern in the post-Sept. 11 world."
Ray Hanania, journalist and filmmaker, author of I¹m Glad I Look Like a Terrorist: Growing up Arab in America and Arabs of Chicagoland

"A highly recommended read, not only for students of Middle East history, but for the average American who wants to know how we have become so intimately and yet so bitterly entwined with the people of the Middle East. ... Salaita has thoughtfully articulated a very regretful era of unabashed racism in American history."
Ramzy Baroud, editor, Palestine Chronicle and author of Searching Jenin

Today is a difficult time to be both Arab and American. Since 9/11 there has been a lot of criticism of America¹s involvement in the middle east. Yet there has been little analysis of how America treats citizens of Arab or middle eastern origin within its own borders.

Steven Salaita explores the reality of Anti-Arab racism in America. He blends personal narrative, theory and polemics to show how this deep-rooted racism affects everything from legislation to cultural life, shining a light on the consequences of Anti-Arab racism both at home and abroad.

Uniquely, the book shows how ingrained racist attitudes can be found within the progressive movements on the political left, as well as the right. Salaita argues that, under the guise of patriotism, Anti-Arab racism fuels support for policies such as the Patriot Act.

Salaita breaks down the façade of Anti-Arab racism with an insightful analysis, arguing for the urgency of a commitment to openness and inclusion in today¹s political climate.

Steven Salaita is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin -Whitewater. He writes frequently about Arab America and the Arab World.

Book Description

In the last days of the twentieth century, leading New Testament scholar and popular preacher Daniel Harrington, S.J., asked himself two powerful questions: What might the church of the first century have to say to the church of the twenty-first century? And How might a brief sythesis of what the New Testament says and does not say about the church help bring greater vitality within and unity among the churches? The result of Father Harrington's research and thinking is this timely and important book.

5 out of 5 stars Didactical and refreshing.......2003-04-06

Beyond the title which is centred on what is currently viewed as the original Church, the question is « Did Jesus found the Church? »
The best way to reach the answer is to read the book. This will give the reader the opportunity to discover that the interest of the book does not lie so much in the answer itself, as in all the things that one will discover on the way, while progressing towards the answer.
One of them is a method for reading the various books of the New Testament by starting to put them in context. In other words, by making a quick overview of who wrote the text, when, for what kind of people, in what social and historical context and for what particular purpose. All things that are essential to anybody who wants to extract the genuine substance of the message.
There is nothing more deceiving than to isolate a few lines from an unknown context and to apply them literally 2000 years later in a different world. This process can also be dangerous if it is used to support a particular ideology.
Another interesting thing regarding a better understanding of the Scriptures is the idea of "hermeneutical spiral" superseding that of "hermeneutical circle." It still runs from Jesus to the texts, the Christian experience and back to Jesus, but it adds a third dimension to the dynamic. It enables us not to go around forever in circles, but to rise each time a little closer to the ultimate truth.
Last but not least, the reader will discover all along the book a variety of interesting insights on basic notions such as wisdom, resurrection, disciple, apostle, baptism, the Lord's Supper and the essence of the Gospel itself. One gets the impression that the author has blown off some centuries of accumulated dust over these definitions, and given them a fresh meaning more consistent with their original purpose and more closely related to our overall life.

4 out of 5 stars Realistic and Helpful.......2003-03-19

Wisely avoiding the temptation to depict the earliest Church as idyllic, Professor Harrington explores the texts of the New Testament (and a few non-canonical texts from the apostolic fathers) to extrapolate what we might learn about, and from, Jesus' first followers. The result is a book that is both profound and practical. Exposing the similarities between the first and the twenty-first century milieus in which the Church must minister, Father Harrington demonstrates the wisdom of looking to the early Church for operational religious models in the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars Articulate, insightful, informed and informative reading........2002-03-23

The Church According To The New Testament: What The Wisdom And Witness Of Early Christianity Teach Us Today by the learned biblical scholar Daniel Harrington (Professor of New Testament, Weston Jesuit School of Theology) draws upon biblical and ecumenical theology to help the reader better appreciate and understand what the foundational Christian texts teach about the Church. The focus is on what the theological content of the individual books comprising the New Testament can tell us about being a community of faith in the contemporary world. Questions for reflection and discussion are provided to assist the reader in learning to apply the wisdom of the new Testament and the witness of early Christians to the issues and concerns of modern life. The Church According To The New Testament is articulate, insightful, informed and informative reading.

Book Description

More people read the Bible than any other book. Indeed, many try to live their lives according to its words. The question is, do they understand what they're reading? As Steven McKenzie shows in this provocative book, quite often the answer is, "No." McKenzie argues that to comprehend the Bible we must grasp the intentions of the biblical authors themselves--what sort of texts they thought they were writing and how they would have been understood by their intended audience. In short, we must recognize the genres to which these texts belong. McKenzie examines several genres that are typically misunderstood, offering careful readings of specific texts to show how the confusion arises, and how knowing the genre produces a correct reading. The book of Jonah, for example, offers many clues that it is meant as a humorous satire, not a straight-faced historical account of a man who was swallowed by a fish. Likewise, McKenzie explains that the very names "Adam" and "Eve" tell us that these are not historical characters, but figures who symbolize human origins ("Adam" means man, "Eve" is related to the word for life). Similarly, the authors of apocalyptic texts--including the Book of Revelation--were writing allegories of events that were happening in their own time. Not for a moment could they imagine that centuries afterwards, readers would be poring over their works for clues to the date of the Second Coming of Christ, or when and how the world would end. For anyone who takes reading the Bible seriously and who wants to get it right, this book will be both heartening and enlightening.

this is awful, angry, elitist, and boring. readers are better served by Brettler's book on reading the Bible. Mackenzie tries to be provocative, but it comes across as angry and condescending.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Book.......2006-07-07

Of all of the christian books I've read this one is the worst. If you are like me and know that the Bible is the inerrant word of God then you will laugh at this book. Not only does it say that Adam and Eve are just literary devices and dont exsist, it uses books not even in the canon of the Bible to prove nonsensical points. If you are a Christian don't waste your time reading the lies in this book. You could just save the trouble and read the ficticious Da Vinci Code.

5 out of 5 stars Reading for context, not just words.......2006-05-14

Throughout history there has been no shortage of ways that people have read the bible: as literal truth, as an allegory, as history, as prophecy or as a guidebook. Professor McKenzie takes the bible as an important book, but one that needs to be read in context. The Bible was not written as a single book at a single time by a single author. Rather it is written by many, in many different ages for many purposes. Understanding the context that an author (or authors) prepared a book is important, or even crucial, to understanding the point the author is trying to get across. The prophets were not necessarily trying to tell what the future holds, but rather to point out what is going on in the world then, but in veiled ways to put their point across. We are reading the bible with hindsight, so we sometimes take the histories as accurate reporting, instead of stories with political or religious purpose, to create lines of events and people. The Gospels feature multiple traces of the lineage of Jesus, but each one differs, depending upon what the author wanted to emphasize, such as proving the unbroken link between Jesus and King David. The apocalyptic literature of Daniel, and the Book of Revelation can be shown to refer in context not to times yet to come, but the world situation when the author wrote the book - apocalypse meaning revelation in Greek. So instead of awaiting the end times, McKenzie shows how the books can be seen as a reflection of current political repression suffered by the Jews and early Christians.

Overall the book gives an interesting way to read and interpret the Bible - to make it a living book but in the proper context. Will this book convince the literalists and "end timers" a new interpretation of readings? Probably not. But for those who come in with an open mind, you may find something to make you think, or a new way of reading one fo the most important books in history.

5 out of 5 stars A Book For Those Just Want the Facts, Ma'am........2004-09-12

Colin Chapman's book is one of a very few books that contends that, like every other problem, political answers are seldom satisfactory because they seldom recognize the real problem. Many Evangelicals have bought into a purely political view of the Middle East. This involves taking sides in an intense propaganda battle between Palistinians and Israelis.Colin Chapman does not take sides in the conflict but applies an accurate reading of history along with careful biblical scholarship to both protagonists. Some, whose minds are made up, won't want to be confused with the facts. For all others, this book is indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Christians.......2000-10-17

This book revolutionaized my perspective of Biblical prophecy. The terrible political position of Christian Zionism has created untold havoc in the Middle East. The violence and hatred is only supported by Christian Zionists who fatally misread Biblical text. Chapman does an excellent analysis of the situation and makes a prophetic call for Christians to change.

5 out of 5 stars Unavoidable critique of Christian Zionism.......1998-09-21

Colin Chapman has taken on the unpleasant task of confronting a modern theological innovation that has captured the imagination of the evangelical church - dispensationalism. The concept, born in England in the mid-1800's as the brainchild of John Nelson Darby, has developed into a complex system of biblical interpretation that has become attractive due to its claim to a simple, straightforward, literal interpretation of the Bible. In Whose Promised Land?, Mr. Chapman brings together a myriad of voices on the topic, beginning with the oldest biblical texts, working his way through the historical maze of details and treaties, to the modern day crisis of the Palestinian people and the Jewish State. He does this successfully by letting the voices speak for themselves by way of extended quotes and detailed references for further research. After laying out the historical details, he makes biblical argument for the rejection of the dispensationalist's unqualified support for the State of Israel. For those interested in hermaneutics (biblical interpretation) and the sensitive issues involve, the trek through all the historical data will be worth your while when you arrive at the section entitled "Is there a word from the Lord?" The worst thing about this book is that it is currently out of print. This is unfortunate. For, any serious student of biblical prophecy and theology will want to have this book in their collection.

3 out of 5 stars Good Story, but too much Bible Thumping........2002-05-28

I thought the story in this book was interesting, but if I had known that the story was less than one-third of the book and the real point is to push religion, I would not even have considered buying it. I think that the book is overpriced for what it is. I like to read alternate history stories, but I am not to much into the bible thumping, which is what this book really is. Bible thumping in a book is alright, as long as it is labeled as such and is not labeled as something else. This is yet another prime example of the sugar coated lies of popular religion. If it is one thing that I hate in a religion, it is one that says one thing and does another.

4 out of 5 stars What If Hitler Won the War.......2001-08-28

This book was enjoyable in that it has an interesting twist combining fiction and alternative history. The fiction involves time-travel which allows Hitler to obtain the atomic bomb before the United States, thereby creating for himself an alternative history in which he ruthlessly rules the world through tyranny into the 1980's. His wicked son, Hans, takes the reigns of power and rules into the 21st century demanding all German provinces of the globe stay in line with his orders; or else they get the A-bomb dropped on them. One province steps out of line and Hans Hitler drops the A-bomb without blinking an eye, and actually drinks a toast to it! Appendix 3 shows how close Hitler actually did come to developing the atomic bomb through his scientist, Professor Werner Heisenberg. Appendix 5 deals with philisophical basis for German anti-semitism showing that in reality it came out of Hitler's racist hatred of the Jews as a result of tramatic experiences and obligations which took place during his childhood. This appendix also documents the idea of a super race, which the Nazi's believed in, was adopted from earlier sources. Had Hitler won, he would have disproved the Judeo-Christian Bible which is filled with prophecies, detailing a Jewish return to the land of Israel in the last days, and the return of the Messiah, which is yet future to inaugurate peace through this biblically predicted state. Though the return of Jews to this country of Israel, which was only brought into existance in 1948, has already begun. However, the book displays interesting prophecies, which illustrate the world peace to accompany this return along with the Messiah's coming will occur shortly, within a few years. Time will tell if this author is correct! I will say this, the prophecies he produces from the Bible and the historic fulfillments, which accompany them, are extremely convincing. Therefore, if the future predictions and fulfillment of the Messiah to bring peace within the next few years does occur after an Antichrist rules for a short time, the world certainly has an enigma to look forward to. The end of the world holds a lot of promise according to this book. Regarding the Apocalyptic abbreviations of this book, they are greatly reproduced in the author's 1200 page book, The End of History- Messiah Conspiracy, which is one of the best books that I have ever read. In this book, he not only quotes hundreds of sources, but reproduces Hebrew texts of prophecies along with their English translations, not to mention the fact that he lavishly illustrates that work with approximately 600 photographs to prove his prophetic points, which are interesting, to say the least!

1 out of 5 stars So bad, its hilarious! Makes you wish there is Censorship !.......2001-02-09

I actually enjoyed this book immensely! It's so bad, it's hilarious! I laughed and laughed until my sides ached. You could put together a book like this with ring binding, B&W photocopied photos, some MS-Paint-edited pictures, some public-domain photos of the 3rd Reich, and VOILA! However, the author did - in his extremely clumsy and inept fashion - painted a gruesome picture of a world under Nazi dominion:- the vast network of death factories, race after race exterminated like so much varmin and consigned to the crematorium, a world-spanning network of vast autobahns, the Germans emerging as virtually the sole remaining race on earth, even glimpses of medicine and TV under a true Thousand Year World-Spanning Reich. His ideas deserved a better author (not to mention better computer graphics). Very good starting point for anor TNT made-for-TV mini-series, titled, perhaps, the Thousand Year Nightmare. Fun, very messy, clumsy, low-grade fun. Not worth the ...., though.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this!.......2000-09-04

Utter rubbish. Like another reviewer I bought the book as an alternate history novel. It isn't.

Some faked Hitler photos and a peurile short story plus photos of the author in modern Israel.

You have been warned. I wish some-one had warned me. The one star is because you can't rate it at no stars.

      Book Description

Like it or not, we are a part of an object-obsessed culture. We interact with design-both good and bad-every day. So why are so many of us uncertain of design's meaning and its role in our lives? In the first book to break down the issues of design for a general audience, University of Pennsylvania art history professor George H. Marcus offers much-needed clarification and a tour of the often smart, political, and savvy imagery that characterizes the ever-changing world of products and graphics today.

From Toyota's "Hybrid" car to Nike's design-it-yourself Nike iD shoe program to Philippe Starck's injection-molded indoor/outdoor plastic lounge chairs, design comprises all of the objects that surround us-the things we wear, the products we use, the vehicles we ride in, and the media that communicate with us graphically. For those who concern themselves with any or all of these things, this book will be a revelation.

        Book Description

"Schools of Tomorrow," Schools of Today documents some of the child-centered progressive schools founded in the first half of the twentieth century and provides histories of some more contemporary examples of progressive practices. Part I discusses seven progressive schools founded in the first part of the twentieth century (Francis W. Parker; Organic; Park; City and Country; Lincoln; Dalton; Arthurdale), tracing them from their beginnings to the present, or until their regrettable demises. Part II examines four more contemporary schools (Butterfield; Free Union Country; Urban Academy; W. Haywood Burns), showing how progressive practices gained momentum from the 1960s onward. As a volume in the History of Schools and Schooling series, this book seeks to look to the past for what it can teach us today. The lessons from the past about what has happened to progressive education hopefully will inform contemporary debates.

          Book Description

What's the Matter with Today's Experimental Music? is based on the premise that contemporary music is suffering from a distinct lack of attention. It inspects and evaluates what is happening to musical experimentation, where things might have gone wrong and what can be done to resolve the problem. Intended as a supplement to surveys of music of the last forty years, it discusses not only the problems of musical content, but also problems of an extra-musical nature. Today's education and communications media are seen to be the main cause of the anonymity of contemporary music and suggestions are made to improve this situation. Leigh Landy investigates audio-visual applications that have hardly been explored, new timbres and sound sources, the discovery of musical space, new notations, musical politics, and the 'musical community' in an attempt to incite more composers, musicians and musicologists to get this music out into the works and to stimulate the creation of new experimental works.
