5 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia of Yacht Designers.......2006-07-03

A Truly magnificent book, all the photos and drawings a boat enthusiast could ever want. I nice broad range of vessel types covered from racing multihulls to powerboats to keel boats and gaff rigged schooners.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Coffee-Table Book.......2005-12-09

This book is very impressive and the years of extensive work to create and publish this book is amazing! A great conversation piece on a coffee-table. Anyone who enjoys yachts would enjoy this book, whether you have an interest in yacht designing or not. Or maybe I'm just a little partial, as my Dad, William H. Shaw, is one of the yacht designers written about in this book and I'm very proud of him.

5 out of 5 stars An instant classic.......2005-11-21

An instant classic. This is an indispensable resource that has been too long in coming. The research is amazingly put together and the depth of entries is impressive. I was particularly interested in the research on Walter Pinaud and the yachting activity around Cape Breton at the turn of the century. Also, of less importance than the material in the book but still notable is the appearance of the book. It is a very attractive volume and the price on Amazon can't be beat.

5 out of 5 stars Classic maritime reference work.......2005-10-26

Long awaited, this magisterial reference work by Lucia Knight and Dan McNaughten about the world's yacht designers will rapidly become a must have book for anyone with an interest in boats, sailing, yacht racing and racing rules, the evolution of yacht design, and many other facets of the maritime world. It's stunning, authoritative and comprehensive.

5 out of 5 stars The Untimate Yachting Book.......2005-10-20

This monumental book, ten years in the writing covers virtually every yacht designer of the century. The length of the entry for each designe is based somewhat on their prominence or the prominence of their designs. The designs come from about the turn of the century (I really like some of the steam powered racing yachts.) to quite modern designs. The size of the yachts vary from small under twenty foot (7' is the smallest I see)) personal boats to the yachts of kings that may be 400 feet plus.

The statistics of the book are amazing in their own rights:

Ten years
87 of the world's finest yachting writers
525 of the world's best yacht designers
650 drawings and photos of represntative boats.

In on book, here is a history, a technical reference manual, a commentary, a picture book, a reference on the designers. In short, here's an encyclopedia.

    Book Description

Here is an encyclopedia of maritime history that, in scope and depth, rivals the expansiveness of the sea itself. The Encyclopedia covers the entire history of seafaring, from ancient Egyptian shipbuilders to Viking sea-raiders, from Nelson and the Napoleonic Wars to the voyages of Cheng Ho, from the European conquerors of the New World to the nuclear submarines and supertankers of today. Placing maritime affairs in their larger historical context, the Encyclopedia shows how seafaring has both reflected and influenced the major economic, cultural, military, and political developments in world history. In four volumes and nearly 1,000 signed articles by an international group of historians and naval officers, the Encyclopedia offers a uniquely integrated approach, emphasizing the connections between maritime history and many related fields, including naval history, shipbuilding, navigation and scientific instrumentation, maritime art and literature, commerce and economics, exploration and maritime geography, oceanography and hydrology, and international maritime law. In so doing, the Encyclopedia provides, in a single reference work, a wealth of information that can otherwise be found only with the help of an extensive library. A-Z organization, intelligible writing, plentiful illustrations, cross-references, bibliographies, a synoptic outline, and topical index all make The Oxford Encyclopedia of Maritime History an inviting, easy-to-use reference for researchers and enthusiasts alike.

4 out of 5 stars Warships Painted With a Wide Brush.......2007-03-31

As a history buff, especially U.S Naval history in the Second World World, I dug into this book with great expectations. However, after finding a glaring error in the book, I find myself somewhat skeptical of the entire work. The book, written and edited in the United Kingdom, does a remarkable job of covering all types of warships -- from escorts to destroyers to cruisers to battleships to aircraft carriers. The book is divided into three sections; Second World War, Cold War and Modern Day. The descriptions, albeit short, should be interesting to the casual reader.

But, to the serious historian, BEWARE! As I said earlier, there is at least one glaring error. Several pages after a glowing review of the Nelson and Rodney classes -- proving the authors are British -- there is a section on the U.S. Iowa class battleships. In this section, the authors claim that the Iowa class battleships -- the Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri and Wisconsin -- were not battleships. Instead, they state to the effect that the Iowa class ships were nothing more than battlecruisers, incapable of taking other battleships. As a docent aboard the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial, I want to be the first to say this is dead wrong! Although none of the Iowa class batleships arrived in the Pacific in time to participate in battleship vs battleship fights, they were certainly stong enough to have carried the day.

The Battleship New Jersey BB-62, when she sailed in 1943 was 887'7" long, 57,353 tons in weight, sported nine 16 inch main guns, ten dual 5" secondary gun mounts, twenty four-barrel Bofors 40mm AA guns and 42 20mm Oerlikon AA guns. Its armor included 17" main gun armor, 17 1/2" armor in the conning tower, and an armored side belt starting at 12" slanting to nine inches at the keel, with an air and liquid void system outside the armor belt. How anyone can say that this is a batlecruiser is beyond me.

Although this may just be an example of the Brits trying to play up the Royal Navy over the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Navy considers the Iowa clas to be the biggest and best battleships built by the U.S. Therefor, to me, this goes down as a glaring error and I am currently searching for more.

    Book Description

On the eve of World War I, the art of submarine warfare was barely a dozen years old; no nation had submarine-qualified officers serving at the senior staff level and no nation had developed any method for detecting submarines, or attacking them if found. Ancient prejudice against submarines remained: they did not "fit" in the classic, balanced structure of a navy - where battleships were king. However, by the end of WWI they had changed the face of naval warfare forever. This excellent and comprehensive reference book, translated for the first time in English, traces the remarkable history of the German U-Boat, meticulously recording all the different submarine classes and types developed from the U-1, launched in 1906, through the highly successful 30's series, to the Wolf pack of WWII and beyond. Type sheets provide information on the development, service record, range, crew strength and location for each entry. Special chapters are also devoted to the most successful and colorful German U-Boat commanders including Karl Donitz, Otto Kretschmer and Gunther Prien, and the boats of WWI War and submarine shelters that can be visited in museums today.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about the German U-Boat........2005-01-24

The 373 U-boats which saw service in WW1 accounted for 6,394 merchant ships with a combined tonnage of over 11 million tonnes. In addition they sank 100 enemy warships - including 10 Battleships. By comparison, the 1,169 U-Boats operating during WW2 sank 2,840 merchant ships with a combined tonnage of over 14 million tonnes and 149 enemy warship including 7 Aircraft Carriers. And those are just the opening comments from this excellent book.

From the earliest German submersible craft built in 1850 to the 12 vessels which are still in service with the modern Bundesmarine, this book will tell you almost everything you ever wanted to know about the German submarine. With plans, drawings and photographs, the U-Boats are listed in alpha-numeric order with all the technical information relevant to the specific vessel. These details are followed by the fate of each craft.

As a junior officer, Dr Möller served briefly on both the Tirpitz and a type XXI U-boat during WW2 and is one of Germany's leading authorities on the subject of the U-Boat. I congratulate him on an excellent work.

This book contained what I was looking for. My Dad sereved on the USS Phoenix CL46. I found books that never gave Dads ship any credit for her war record, although this book dosen't list all the details, it sure did give Phoenix (and all other cruisers) credit well deserved. Excellent book!!

4 out of 5 stars Worth the money........2000-11-13

It is unusually difficult to find good books on this subject. It has a brief history of each ship, and some excellent photos. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent summary of US WW2 Cruisers!.......1999-01-30

If you find it somewhere, grab it! This is a great book. It covers 74 US Cruisers that saw action in WW2, that earned at least one battle star. It covers Heavy Cruisers, Light Cruisers, and the Alaska-class Battlecruisers. It also briefly covers the Princeton-class Light Carriers that were built on Cleveland-class cruiser hulls. The book covers the ship by class, with a short introduction. A summary of each ship's WW2 history then follows. There's at least one photo of every cruiser.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty much everything you could ask for.......2005-02-13

A glance at the table of contents shows that there were a lot of cruisers in World War II! Ships are listed for 18 countries, of which Great Britain had the greatest number of distinct classes - 20 in all, although the USA had more ships. The cruisers described in this book varied enormously in size, from the Japanese Yubaris (under 3000 tons) to the massive American Alaska class - battlecruisers in all but name at 30,000 tons, and hardly inferior to the undergunned German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. And then there were the Royal Navy's cruisers: typically medium sized, stoutly constructed to go anywhere and survive any seas, often old-fashioned in appearance but respected by friends and enemies.

This is a fine thick book that gives masses of details, together with diagrams and photographs. Quite apart from its intrinsic merit, it is ideal for flattening out curled-up papers or cardboard! As well as a bibliography and index, it has a short (4 page) introduction that gives a quick history of the cruiser type in the First and Second World Wars, and even shows the numbers of WWII cruisers lost in various ways - 10 Japanese and 20 British ships, for example, were sunk by aircraft attack.

One of the most interesting themes that emerges is the naval architects' frenzied quest for the ideal compromise between speed, striking power, protection and range. For a while, this was further complicated by the requirements of the Washington treaty with its (often infringed) 10,000 ton limit. The German Hipper class weighed in at 14,500 tons; the Italian Zaras at 11,700; and the Japanese Tone and Chikuma at 11,200. Sometimes there was a price to pay - the Hippers' machinery was prone to break down, and several of the larger Japanese cruisers were lacking in hull strength and stability. The Zaras, ironically enough, had nearly twice as much armour as the preceding Trento class; ironically because, when they were put to the test, it was by the 15-inch guns of Admiral Cunningham's battleships at Matapan, and they might just as well have been wrapped in tissue paper.

Although the coverage of most classes described is thorough and detailed, one or two mysteries remain. For instance, what were the circumstances surrounding "the loss of Tomozuru on 12 March 1934"? Tomozuru itself is not listed in this book, no doubt because it was lost before the outbreak of the Second World War.

British patriots and admirers of the Royal Navy will be delighted to read of the achievements of British cruisers, of which the Battles of the River Plate, First and Second Sirte, the Barents Sea and North Cape were only the tip of the iceberg. As Alastair Maclean noted in his best-selling debut novel "HMS Ulysses", the battleships might be bigger and stronger, but the cruisers did most of the actual patrolling and fighting - and dying.

For naval enthusiasts - especially those interested in the Second World War - this book is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Good, solid work on topic that needed coverage........2003-01-07

Cruisers is another in Whitely's series on warships of World War II--and one that is particularly needed. The cruisers of the Royal Hellenic Navy should have been included, thought. If the Brazilian and Chilean relics were included, certainly Hellas and, particularly, Averoff, should have been.

4 out of 5 stars Cruisers get the Whitley treatment.......2001-11-11

Given the general paucity of cruiser information, this may be the most important of Whitley's encyclopedias. As with his battleship book, the drawings are perfunctory. But the book succeeds on the basis of its concentration of data--not microscopic in detail but broad in scope. No other single volume competes with this handy book, and you definitely get your dollar's worth. You could spend twice as much on a Conway's, but you still won't have the fundamental appreciation of design features you get from Whitley.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Book-Nothing to Write Home About.......2000-03-28

Cruisers of World War 2 is a compilation of all the cruisers in existence during World War 2. All operational details and a history of cruisers of the major combatatants and neutral powers is included. The photo selection is good and the coverage of ships belonging to neutral contries is welcome- I bet most people didn't know that Argentina had three modern cruisers in commision during World War 2- two Italian designed and built heavy cruisers and one British built light cruiser/cadet training ship.

All in all a pretty decent reference, but the drawings are of little use except to show a basic layout- no good for modelers. Also there are some miscaptionings and factual errors, an unfortunate feature in almost all of Whitley's books. Examples- the photo captioned as HMS Dehli is of a different ship. Dehli had American pattern 5 inch guns and the ship in question still has her original British armament. Also, my copy of the book is missing the operational history of HMS Bermuda of the Fiji class. There is supposed to be a reprint which hopefully corrects these mistakes, but sloppy work should not be tolerated, especially from the Naval Institute Press.

      3 out of 5 stars A Good, Basic Reference.......1998-07-16

Cruisers of World War Two: An International Encyclopedia is a good reference on the cruisers of all the combatant nations of World War 2. All details are given concerning number of ships in the class, dimensions, weapons, operational history, and final disposition. The selection of photos is good; however as a modeler's reference, it falls short, primarily because the drawings are basic, showing little detail. A word of caution; in my copy of this book, the operational history of HMS Jamaica of the British Fiji class is not included.

4 out of 5 stars Very good look of all the world's battleships in WWII.......2006-08-08

This book gives two tales that justify some of the stars. First, you can use this book for proof of when the USA goes up to Chile and asks to purchase their only battleship, the "Almirante Latorre", to make good the losses of Pear Harbor after December 7, 1941. That's sort of weird because that battleship is not really much better than a "Texas" class ship. Second, Germany sinks the last battleship of WWII. The Russians were given an Italian battleship, the "Guido Cesare", as part of the war prizes given out after WWII. In 1955 the ex-Italian Soviet battleship, now called "Novorossik" sets off a German mine from WWII, started taking a list, the Soviets send in new sailors to hand pump out the ship, it rolls over, and was loss with a fantastic amount of life. Over 500 Soviet sailors died when the Novorossik sank in October of 1955.

Yes, the book has simple drawings of the battleships. But, it does a fairly good job of showing the simple lines of the ships. I scaled some of the drawings, the Graf Spee is about 1/1150 scale. The larger battleships scale out even smaller. You will have to use other books, like the Osprey book on Pocket battleships, if you want specific and detailed information on a particular ship.

Neither the German or Greek pre-dreadnoughts of WWII are in this book. The author gives a good reason why with an explanation of the USS Arkansas battleship. The Wyoming is a sistership of Arkansas. However, Wyoming was removed as a battleship in compliance with the Washington treaty of 1933. So she was not a battleship and her service life was of no matter in this book. The German and Greek pre-dreadnoughts were either training ships or fire support ships, not true battleships. Thus they are not a subject of this book.

However, I liked this book. It gives a good break down of the size of the ships, their tonnages, and the arms. Also, as in the case of the extensively rebuilt American ships, it gives rebuilt figures for tonnages, speed, range, and arms. One of the more interesting tales was a Soviet battleship was rebuilt to burn wood. Yes, while British and American ships burned oil in WWII a Soviet ship was modified to burn wood because all the Soviet coal was needed for their war effort. In addition, this book gives the reasons for the ships losses or their fates. The USS Texas and some other American ships are turned into war memorials. Last, it gives the fate of all the ships. The vast majority are scrapped from about 1947 until 1959. Since the book was written in '97 the USS Missouri and USS New Jersey have become war memorials. Iowa and Wisconsin will become museums but just where has not quite been decided as of the date of this review.

      M. J. Whitley does a wonderful job following the American battleship development of pre-1935. The Pennsylvania to the New Mexico class are all very close in lines. Whitley does a masterful job showing how these ships are all evolved from one another. Indeed, the true ships that are the genesis of all American battleships are the Nevada class.

Whitley also shows the aborted German "H" class battleship, kind of like a super Bismarck class ship with 16" guns. This is done with both the British and the Soviets. However, since the American Montana class is never laid down it's not the subject of analysis of this book.

I use this book as a general reference tool. It has a nice and compact write up of all the world's battleships in world war two. It has the service records of the ships, modifications made in their use, and general write up of their designs.

This book is worth it's four stars if you can find it on discount or at your local used book store. I didn't pay much for the book and it now is a useful part of my library. A useful reference book is what we collectors want.

4 out of 5 stars Whitley being Whitley.......2001-11-11

I love the way Whitley compresses it all into one volume that won't chew a hole in your wallet. This is not the last word in battleship references, but it's among the best first words you can find. The one weakness is in its illustrations. Modelers can pass this one by. The line drawings look like the author did them himself, out of necessity--which is actually the case. And there are no armor schematics. However, Whitley goes beyond where other references (like Conway's) grind to a halt, and he goes to the trouble of describing the armor layout rather than simply slapping statistics onto the page. What it lacks in detail, it makes up for with its handiness and broad scope. I'm aware of its limitations, especially where the author was trying to pry information out of Russian and Japanese sources, but I find myself getting plenty of use out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Battleships.......2000-08-25

This is clearly the best book I have seen on battleships. The content level compared to cost was good enough that I ordered the authors books on cruisers and destroyers without seeing them.

2 out of 5 stars Awfully brief for an Encylcopedia.......2000-07-20

      M. J. Whitley does his best to describe the world's capital ships of the WWII era but just does not devote enough material to adequately cover the rebuilt ships from the WWI era, the new designs laid down and completed in the 1930's and 1940's, and the designs planned but not laid down or completed. As with his book on Aircraft Carrier Development, the line drawings are crude and not particuarly accurate. Mr. Whitley includes descriptions of the Soviet dreadnoughts laid down in 1938-39-40 (Sovietskii Soyuz class) but indicates nothing about the U. S. Montana class, which were the first US design to be wider than the locks of the Panama Canal. Overall, the material contained here can be found to much better effect in other references.

      3 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Effort.......1999-12-26

Battleships of World War Two : An International Encyclopedia by Whitley is actually pretty good, especially compared to some of his other efforts. There seem to be fewer editorial errors compared to his book on cruisers and all in all the historical information is useful. Modelers should note that the drawings are pretty useless, which is consistent with the books in this series.

Fortunately, this book seems to be complete, especially if you have Whitley's cruiser book, which is missing the combat history of the British cruiser HMS Bermuda (and not HMS Jamaica, as was mentioned in my Amazon review of Cruisers of World War Two). A pretty good effort, but if you want completeness and better illustrations, go for the Garzke and Dulin series on battleships.
