Superb Reference Work.......2007-06-16
Richard Overy's "The Penguin Historical Atlas of the Third Reich" is a superb reference work. In just over 100 pages (not counting timelines and appendices) it provides an excellent overview of the Third Reich, working in roughly chronological order from the turmoil at the end of the First World War to the chaos and despair at the end of the Second World War.
The book is sectioned into seven parts: Each part contains a four-page introductory section followed by three to ten chapters further illuminating that topic.
The seven parts are:
I. From War to Third Reich, 1918-1933
II. Establishing the Dictatorship
III. Foreign Policy in Germany, 1933-1939
IV. Expansion and War, 1939-1945
V. The German New Order
VI. German Society and Total War
VII. The Aftermath
Each chapter that follows an introductory section is only two pages, yet there is an incredible amount of information packed into those two pages as easily understandable pie-charts, graphs, and/or maps are included. Many interesting photos and posters (or other propaganda) relevant to a chapter are also often included, although they are generally quite small.
The writing in each chapter and section is extremely well-done. Time and again the author deftly explains complicated matters in a few brief paragraphs.
The book is a handy reference on many of the social, economic, political, and military aspects of the Hitler regime. It could almost double as a mini-history of the Third Reich and certainly supplements any study of it. Highly recommended.
Plenty of info well presented.......2007-05-06
Comprehensive in its scope, dense in its content. Plenty of charts, maps, etc. More than enough information to get a global picture of what was going on with Germany from the end of the First World War to the end of the Second and its aftermath. It has about 115 pages plus another 15 of timelines.
The tone, however, is a bit dry, like a textbook. But I guess, being so concise, it would be difficult to make it more reader-friendly. A very good historical atlas.
A window into socio-political realm of the Third Reich..........2004-09-05
~The Penguin Historical Atlas of the Third Reich~ is an intriguing window into economic, military, social and political policies of the Third Reich. The best value in this nifty and succinct roughly 150-page historical atlas is putting the Third Reich into perspective and gaining an understanding of the policies and ideology that fueled its fanatical, albeit short-lived assent to power. With pictures, maps, statistics, and demographics, this book captures something that more voluminous books on the subject often fail to do. It frames economic, social, and political policies of the Third Reich into perspective while offering a history of the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. Overy even chronicles post-war plans for the New Order under the Reich. Hitler was obsessed with building colossal monuments (mostly those designed by Speer) and hoped to make Berlin into 'Germania,' the capital of the world. He aspired to implement massive network of road and rail to forge his new empire and tighten the noose over the conquered territories. The Germans hoped to harness their innate engineering ingenuity and the Nazi henchman laid out plans for a New Order under German dominance, which never prevailed. In reality, the so-called thousand-year Reich died in its infancy.
Ideas have consequences! In ascertaining Nazi ideology, as it relates to economic matters, most modern liberal historians who tacitly embrace Marxist-Leninist revisionist interpretation of the fascist phenomenon, ignore the Nazi affinity for socialist ideas. They're always apt to paint fascism in a caricatured mold of imperialism - capitalism serving the interest of capitalists - which is a dubious assessment to say the least given the anti-capitalism espoused by Nazi ideologues like Goering and Hitler for example. Richard Overy perceptively outlines Nazi ideology and its economic, political and social policies in practice. In reality, the Nazis on their own terms tended to see themselves as expositors of an authentic nationalism of the "German Left." (See _Leftism Revisited_ and Konrad Heiden's biography on _Hitler_ to corroborate this.) The anti-bourgeoisie ideological flavor and Byzantine corporatism of Nazi economic policy acted to undermine the industrial potential of Germany by sabotaging its productivity potential and ultimately alienating the Ruhr industrialists-the very class that the Nazis most needed to build and supply their war machine. As Overy notes, the Nazis occasionally tolerated the private sector only as practical expedient, though they didn't shy from sporadic intervention, economic controls, as well as outright confiscation. The industrialist Fritz Thyssen, frustrated with state prodding, lamented, "Soon Germany will not be any different from Bolshevik in Russia." Likewise, the Nazi economic chieftain, Hermann Goering was always out to gobble up private industry and incorporate it into the state-run conglomerate, the Reichswerke A.G. In précis, Richard Overy captures the historical developments as well as the economic, military, social and political policies of the Third Reich on the pages of this succinct and informative book.
chock full of info.......2002-01-06
If you are looking for a book that gives a tremendous amount of information, of the sort not often found in the books that primarily cover only the actual fighting, or the personality of Hitler and his henchmen, this may be the book you're looking for.
Most of the chapters run from 2 to 4 pages, often detailing subjects like Culture and Education, Farming in the Third Reich, Planning the Post-War Order, Exploitation and Plunder, and The Survival of Neo-Nazism. And do you like charts and graphs? Well, this book won't leave you disappointed.
All in all, well done.
Excellent and concise reference.......2001-12-27
I bought this book because I wanted to know about the actual mechanics of the Nazi government before and during WWII. This book contains a wealth of information in a very effective format. Each section is 2-4 pages with several maps and graphs, all clearly captioned, accompanied by a page or two of concise text. The book illustrates the state of Germany in the 20's and 30's, Hitler's rise, the path he took into the war, the Nazi plans for post-war Europe, and the overall cost of it all to Germany. Social, industrial, political, and military matters are all covered, in great detail (i.e. number of ships made per yer, broken down by type, number of women in the Nazi party '33 to '45, etc.). The text conveys the underlying situations behind issues of the day, such as Hitler's quest to "unite Germanic peoples" and the underpinnings of the Allies' pacifism in the face of it. I rocommend this book for anyone interested in that era of world history, novice or expert.

Book Description
An hour-by-hour re-creation of the D-Day invasion and its aftermath, told through new and highly detailed computer-generated maps, explanatory texts, and contemporary photographs.
June 2004 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the largest amphibious military operation in history. D-Day was the culmination of four years of planning and preparation, which had begun in summer 1940 when Britain stood alone and under imminent threat of a German cross-Channel invasion.
This groundbreaking study of D-Day and the subsequent campaign charts the gradual evolution of the invasion plan, encompassing the intelligence efforts, the Anglo-U.S. strategic debate over where the Allies should attack, and the elaborate deception put in place to fool the Germans about the true D-Day objective. The buildup culminates in an hour-by-hour and day-by-day account of the landings by air and by sea on the beaches of NormandyUtah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Swordand the subsequent grim struggle for six weeks to break through the German defenses.
At the center of this fascinating re-creation of the D-Day invasion are 70 maps in full color, which incorporate the latest computer technology. Many are in fact based on the same maps used by the Allies in 1944. Detailed drawings and 80 photographs, both modern and contemporary to the period, help bring the beaches of Normandy to life. The book also includes contributions by French and German historians.
Featuring:
- Splendid full-color maps with detailed explanatory captions
- Section introductions with comprehensive examinations of how, when, where, why, and who
- An authoritative text by a noted military historian
- 175 illustrations, 70 in color

The perfect guide for touring the Normandy battlefields.......2006-07-11
I used this book as my bible during a multi-day tour of the Normandy battlefields. The level of detail and first rate analysis really set this book apart. I carried this book the entire time I was in Northern France and referred to it constantly.
The maps as some of the most beautiful historical maps I have ever seen. They are clear, well designed, and contain a wealth of information. The level of detail is down to small roads and individual building in many maps. So many military history books skimp on maps. The full-color works of art in this book are almost worthy of framing. The author provides great commentary on the strategy and tactics of the invasion. Crisp line drawings of important weaponry are used throughout the book. I wish every major historical battlefield had such a great guide.
As the Title Projects.......2006-05-11
Messenger's D-Day Atlas has many maps that are very easily read and the text within the book itself is very well written. If you are looking for a good overview of the invasion and it's aftermath, complete with anecdotes and easy to follow maps, then this is a book that you should be happy with.

Book Description
The harrowing history of the Nazi attempt to annihilate the Jews of Europe during the Second World War is illustrated in this series of 320 highly detailed maps. This atlas traces each phase of the Holocaust, beginning with the anti-Semitic violence of prewar Germany and leading to the German conquest of countries in which the Jews had lived for centuries. Presented in chronological order, the maps document in compelling detail the story of the Holocaust, from the spread of the early random killings of Jews and their systematic mass expulsion from thousands of towns and villages to the establishment of ghettos and the setting up of the death camps. Also shown on the maps are more than two hundred acts of resistance and revolt, as well as areas of Jewish partisan activity and other avenues of escape and rescue.

Tracing the horros of the Shoah.......2007-07-12
In this volume, Martin Gilbert, who is possibly the most prolific historian on the history of the Holocaust, traces the geographical history of the Holocaust using maps accompanied by detailed commentary to illustrate the scope and horror that took place between 1941 and 1945. Also included in this volume is a detailed account of antisemitic violence that was rife in Europe in the early 20th Century.
Gilbert painstakingly covers each region of Europe and North Africa, where Jews were targeted, interred and murdered. Gilbert gives an account of the systematic attempts to exterminate the Jews: the random killing and anti-Jewish pogroms, the forcing of Jews into ghettos, the deliberate starvation of these Jews, deportations and death camps, slave labor and mass killings.
Gilbert also enumerates the countries where many Jews fled to escape Nazi persecution. Between 1933 and 1938, 500 000 German Jews emigrated or fled abroad, including more than 33 000 to Palestine, where they joined tens of thousands of recent Jewish immigrants from Poland. After the war, 200 000 survivors of the camps immigrated to Palestine, hence, Holocaust survivors and their descendants make up a substantial part of Israel's population today.
Gilbert record the names, ages and places of birth of some specific Holocaust victims whose cases he examines. He also details lesser-known locations of the Nazi persecution such as Morocco, Libya and Tunisia which were under Nazi occupation. Every period is intensely covered, as is every geographic region where Jews suffered and died.
The atlas is supplemented with photographs, some of which are very graphic. Two important maps are placed at the end of the book estimating how many Jews from each country were murdered during the Holocaust, and how many Jews returned to their countries of birth after the war.
Through his use of maps to illustrate the destruction of European Jewry and eyewitness accounts of the Nazi atrocities, Gilbert succeeds as always in combining the recording of the larger events, with a ground eye view.
More knowledge about History's greatest Evil.......2005-05-04
One of the way the human mind learns is through ordering complex realities into diagrams and pictures and illustrations and maps. These somehow give us a sense of really comprehending what we understand only vaguely.
So these maps which tell the story of the Holocaust , from the time of initial German violence against the Jews through the time of the destruction itself, and then for the remainder, the aftermath.
In collecting this material Martin Gilbert one of the great modern historians , and one of the major historians of the Holocaust provides the reader with still more information, more means for knowing about, if not completely understanding, what is arguably the greatest act of collective Evil in human history.
Very thorough facts and figures.......2004-11-26
This detailed account of horrendous facts will bring tears to the eyes of the hardest ones.
Each of the numbers reported concerns human persons with their wives, family, parents, children. Behind each figure there is a drama. It is not a book about the holocaust, it's just figures and maps. There is no human aspect in these inhuman statistics.
Ever since the Greek classic period, the ones reporting a defeat are no longer killed. Martin Gilbert is supplying a very detailed, thorough and actualized report on one of the greatest defeat of humanity. He should be praised for that.
His book doesn't cover the documents which permitted the holocaust or the proofs substantiating what is not to be proven. It simply attempts at tracing each and every deportation by the nazi (no capital N, please, they have lost such a right). This is an essential working tool for historians, if they can avoid loosing the human faces behind the figures.
I still rather work with Raul Hilberg, Richard Breitman, Walter Laqueur, Randolph Braham, Yitshak Arad, Gerald Reitlinger, Lucy Dawidowicz, Saul Friedlander, Yeshuda Bauer, John Mendelsohn, Henry Friedlander & Sybil Milton, and many other with the same approach but Martin Gilbert book is always next to each of them, it maintains a synthetic global view and it is a reference as well.
If you have an interest in the nazi mass murders, you simply cannot afford not to have Gilbert's atlas. By the way why don't we have a similar Atlas on the goulag as yet? This lack shows how Gilbert's book filled a hisorical need.
Don't be satisfied with Martin Gilbert's Atlas, but don't do without it.
People dying in the camps were begging for us to tell: Jewish or not Jewish, let's keep on telling.

Book Description
Atlas of the Holocaust, the product of seven years' research, is a comprehensive record of the Nazi attempt to annihilate the Jews of Europe during World War II.
World-renowned historian Martin Gilbert has drawn each of the 316 maps especially for this atlas. All are fully annotated and are based on documentary evidence from a wide range of sources.
The atlas traces each phase of the Holocaust, beginning with the anti-Semitic violence of prewar Germany and leading to the German conquest of countries in which the Jews had lived for centuries. Presented in chronological order, the maps document in compelling detail, month by month and week by week, the story of the Holocaust, from the spread of the early random killings of Jews and their systematic mass expulsion from thousands of towns and villages to the establishment of ghettos and the setting up of the death camps. The atlas ends with the death marches and executions in the final days of the Allied liberation. Also shown on the maps are more than two hundred acts of resistance and revolt, as well as areas of Jewish partisan activity and other avenues of escape and rescue. Many maps tell the stories of hundreds of children deported to their deaths. Others bear witness to individuals active in revolt and tell moving sagas of their courage and defiance.

Tracing the murder of 6 million through maps.......2007-06-01
Martin Gilbert is possibly the most prolific historian on the history of the holocaust.
In this volume gilbert has compiled 316 maps, together with a commentary t o illustrate the scope of the horror that took place between 1941 and 1945.
He begins by tracing the history of anti-Semitic violence in Europe, with maps and history of anti-Jewish violence before the First World War, and anti-Jewish violence in Europe between 1918 and 1932.
One fascinating map details the two thousand year history of Jewish life in Europe by 1933, explaining how long Jews had lived in each country in Europe covered.
Gilbert painstakingly covers each region of Europe and North Africa, where Jews were targeted, interend and murdered. He details the greater massacres and the lesser known killings.
He also outlines the countries to which German Jewish refugees were recieved.
From Germany between 1933 and 1938, 500 000 Jews emigrated or fled abroad, including more than 33 000 to the then 'Palestine', where they joined tens of thousands of recent Jewish immigrants from Poland.
After the war, 200 000 survivors of the camps emigrated to "Palestine".
Hence descendants of refugees from Nazism and holocaust survivors make up a substantial part of Israel's population today.
Gilbert does not spare the horror when he describes the random killing and anti-Jewish pogroms, the anti-Jewish measures taken in different countries, the forcing of Jews into ghettos, the deliberate starvation of Jews in these ghettos, the deportations and death camps, the slave labout systems and the mass killings.
This is a very comprehensive digest, and although there were so many whose names have not been recorded, Gilbert does record the names, ages and places of birth of some holocaust victims whose cases he examines.
He also details lesser known locations of the Nazi persecution, such as the fate of Jews in Morocco, LIbya and Tunisia under Nazi/Axis occupation during this period.
Ever period is intensely covered, as is every geographic region where Jews suffered and died.
Several maps detail the cases of some of the children deported to from various places in Europe, and from various countries, such as maps showing the names, ages and places from which several children were deported from France.
We wonder about the lives and cruel deaths of the precious children whose ages and names we see, but whom we know little else about.
The atlas is supplemented about 40 , sometimes very graphic photographs, and two important maps are placed at the end of the book estimated how many Jews from each country were murdered during the holocaust, and how many Jews returned to their countries of birth after the war.
Always keeping the human touch and concern for each individual victim and survivor, Gilbert provides the stories of three of several children who survived and were taken to the children's home at Ulm: Idel Levitan, Renja Fraum and Zlata Tauber-with their photographs.
Gilbert succeeds as always with combining the recording of the larger events, with a ground eye view.
Very informative.......1997-09-29
To read this book is a mitzvah. I showed this book to a survivor whos village no longer exists. She started to cry when her village was mentioned and she said "someone does remember us". This was very touching and I think that all survivors should know that there are many who still remember.
The thing that I felt that was lacking, is that there was very little detail of when of Jews of Italy and Greece were deported to the camps.

A good beginning.......2007-10-02
A short summary: This Atlas is a good compilation of maps covering the entire WW II conflict involving the US for Asia & the Pacific. It appears to be chiefly aimed at undergraduate students, and those who are relatively new to the history of WW II in the eastern hemisphere.
There are approx. 50 maps, each on large 11 by 14 inch pages, and in color. The spiral binding makes the book very easy to use. The maps are time-phased to depict the chronological progress of the conflict. One should be somewhat familiar with both standard military symbology, and the use of action symbols to convey the progress of a particular battle.
I purchased the book in order to suppliment the US Army Official History volumes on the Pacific War - primarily because the companion atlas to those volumes is not in print, and has been unavailable on the re-sale market for some time. This atlas doesn't meet my needs in that area. However, that being said, it does do a fair job of keeping the overall strategic and tactical aspects of the Pacific campaigns in order.
I was particularly pleased to see that this Atlas included wide coverage of Allied and Japanese military plans, objectives, and operations in both space and time from the 1930's onwards. This affords a wide view of the overall historical context. In addition, some atypical aspects of the Pacific war are included. Examples: the Soviet August 1945 offensive in Manchuria is sketched in, as is the Japanese Feb. 1945 "Ichi-GO" offensive in China. Finally, the post-Aug.1945 planned operations by the US ("Downfall") are outlined.
The particular volume I purchased had a slight registration error between the print overlays - about 1/32 inch. This is somewhat annoying, but tolerable once understood.
West Point Atlas for the Second World War: Asia & Pacific.......2007-01-12
Schnelle und gute Lieferung. Jeder Zeit wieder. Es gibt nicht besseres als diese "West Point Serie"!
Good Maps.......2004-04-01
These maps are designed to go with the companion volume concerning WWII in the Pacific and must be considered with that in mind. The maps fit very well with the actions described in the WWII in the Pacific book. As the maps try and cover the entire Pacific war they cannot give a blow by blow account of each battle; however, they provide a very good overview of the situation as it developed in the Pacific and the key terrain features are shown along with the importance of certain locations.
I liked the maps and I like the binding as it allows the maps to be laid out flat for easy viewing.
These maps looks like it was drawn by my little sister............2004-01-28
Only buy this book if you and your friends are getting together to have a book burning and you can't seem to find a book that you own that you want to burn. (Also if you and your friends are getting together and burning books...I'm just going to go ahead and assume your from the south)

Book Description
This Atlas contrasts 21 World War II battle plans with their actual outcome. Each battle is covered in an in-depth essay that is complemented by original maps, producing fresh insight into the technical aspects of warfare that drove the last worldwide conflict of the twentieth century.
Placing individual battles in context, an introductory essay by the editor provides a strategic overview of the whole of the war. The battles are thereafter presented in seven sections: The Armored Blitzkreigs, The Amphibious Landings, The Slogging Matches, The Airpower Factor, The War at Sea, Airborne Assault, and The City Battles. Each section starts with an introductory essay on the common theme of the group.

Atlas for the Second World War: Europe and the Mediterranean (West Point Military History Series).......2007-01-11
I thought that the maps would be more detailed then they were. I was disappointed in the book.
Awesome!.......2004-01-06
West Point has done a fantastic job drafting these maps. All are well organized with a simple key and easy to understand troop movements. The complaint of that these are only maps without explanations is correct, but when accompanied by West Point's "The Second World War: Europe and the Mediterranean" book, they work together perfectly. These are perfect for anyone willing to break out of learning basic WWII history and wants to get into the more advanced theories of strategy, tactics, supply, etc.
Not a bad atlas.......2003-04-08
In the past I had tried very hard to get a copy of this atlas, with no such luck. This atlas was just re-released. This atlas contains full page maps covering different stages of the war in Europe, North Africa & Italy. There is NO informational text to go along with the maps. At the beginning of the Atlas, there is a Map Key to explain what all the symbols on the maps are. The maps mostly cover big or huge areas. There are very few maps covering small towns or battles; the majority of the maps (99%) show the whole broad operational movements. One main reason I was interested in buying this atlas is that it does not cover the Pacific theater, since my main interest is in European Theater Battles. The Atlas also covers only land battles no naval stuff here.
