Book Description
A comprehensive selection of essays--some never before translated into English--by the Nobel Laureate.
To Begin Where I Am brings together a rich sampling of poet Czeslaw Milosz's prose writings. Spanning more than a half century, from an impassioned essay on human nature, wartime atrocities, and their challenge to ethical beliefs, written in 1942 in the form of a letter to his friend Jerzy Andrzejewski, to brief biographical sketches and poetic prose pieces from the late 1990s, this volume presents Milosz the prose writer in all his multiple, beguiling guises. The incisive, sardonic analyst of the seductive power of communism is also the author of tender, elegiac portraits of friends famous and obscure; the witty commentator on Polish complexes writes lyrically of the California landscape. Two great themes predominate in these essays, several of which have never appeared before in English: Milosz's personal struggle to sustain his religious faith, and his unswerving allegiance to a poetry that is "on the side of man."
Customer Reviews:
Elegant and Sophisticated Prose.......2001-12-24
I highly recommend this volume to anyone. Along with his recently published New and Collected Poems(Ecco Press), Milosz stands tall as one of the most accomplished writers in the modern era. This volume of essays is highly personal and eloquent. His prose style is immediate and vivid, capturing insights of history and the "poetic." His work on Jeffers is remarkable. This is a poet of our time--his thought triumphs over despair and the ills of the human condition. He has witnessed some of the most deliberate atrocities in world history--his essays evoke a wisdom based on personal remembrance-and there is no better vision of our predicament than what is offered here.
A Poet's Religious Humanism.......2001-12-16
Czeslaw Milosz is a renowned writer of both poetry and prose. He received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1980. In his long life, he has seen and written about many of the events of the Twentieth Century, including the Russian Revolution, the Holocaust, the Warsaw Uprising, and the rise and fall of communism. He served as a diplomat from Poland to the United States following WWII. Among his books is an incisive critique of communism titled "The Captive Mind".
"To begin where I am" is a selection of Milosz's essays published between 1942 and 1998, some written initially in English, but most written in Polish. The essays are wide-ranging in theme and capture a great deal of the scope of Milosz's passions. The good introduction to the book by Bogdana Carpenter and Madeline Levine point out that Milosz "has centered his writings on a few fundamental philosophical questions: the meaning of history; the existence of evil and suffering; the transience of all life; theascendance of a scientific worldview andthe decline of the religious imagination." The essays are well-arranged into four main sections.
The first group of essays titled "These Guests of Mine" is primarily historical and descriptive in character. I enjoyed particularly Milosz's description of Wilno(Vilna) in his "Dictionary of Wilno Streets."
For me the heart of the book is in the second and third parts, titled "On the Side of Man" and "Against Incomprehensible Poetry." We learn a great deal about a writer by his discussions of those who have influenced him. In this book,Miloscz's essays on the American poet Robinson Jeffers, on the Russian philospher Lev Shestov, and on the French theological thinker Simone Weil are highly thoughtful. They reveal a writer both struggling for a commitment to religion, to Catholicism in particular, in the face of a scientific and material worldview which he finds inconsistent with it, and a writer committed to humanism, to the best in man and culture. They are an inspiring and difficult set of commitments, and Milosz discusses them eloquently.
In Part 3 of the book, the centerpiece is the title essay "Against Incomprehensible Poetry". In this essay, Milosz develops insights from W.H. Auden and makes them his own. Auden had said "there is only one thing that all poetry must do,it must praise all it can for being and for happening." (p.381). This insight becomes the basis of a critique of much obscurantism in modern poetry. We are privileged to hear, in the book, a discussion of the continuing value of poetry and informed discussion of many poets worth knowing, from Whitman, Blake, and Jeffers to many of Milosz's Polish contempories. These latter writers are unknown to me, but Milosz makes one wish for them as companions through his discussions.
The fourth part of the book. "In Constant Amazement", is brief and consists of a collection of aphorisms. The aphorism I found most striking discusses the nature of human sexuality. It begins: "Men and women carry within their imagination an image of themselves and of others as sexual beings and often that is the only thing that humanizes them." (p. 436)
This book helped me with my own thinking and reflection. I hope it will help you with yours as well.

This book changed my life!.......2007-10-14
There are very few books written today that can truly make a difference, to you as an individual and to society as a whole, but Choices and Illusions is one such book. Dr. Taylor's approach is very scientific and down to earth - he provides definite reasons for why you are not in control of your own lives and gives you clear techniques that will truly put you back in the driver's seat of your own life. Dr. Taylor does a great job proving the teachings of the great masters using the language and techniques of today. The mind truly is capable of great things but it is up to you to use your own mind correctly. This book will change your life.
Reading all of the other reviews already posted, I find it amazing that while most people are in total agreement with me, a few of them are in total disagreement. I can only assume that this book 'pushed some buttons' and hence the few, vehement negative reviews. If you truly wish to change, then Choices and Illusions will show you the way. If you prefer to remain in the 'healing process' but never getting healed, then you may prefer to say that Choices and Illusions offers nothing new. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear, as the great saying goes. Well, Choices and Illusions is the teacher, but it is up to you, as the student, to be open to the message it brings. I carry and share my copy with everyone--in fact, I have
purchased many more than one copy already.
waste of trees.......2007-10-09
This book came highly recommended by some top names in the field (RAMTHA AND McTaggert)so I bought the book to find out more.
It is not usually my style to trash somebody's work but this book is boring and everything mentioned has been well covered elsewhere in a superior manner.
There is no depth to any subject brought up. I would have loved to read more about subliminals, but the subject is dropped as soon as it is brought up except for the tesimonials for the product Eldon Taylor sells.
Check it out from the library but don't encourage this mediocre book by buying it.
More Powerful Than You Have Imagined.......2007-09-18
I have to admit that I didn't set out to answer the big questions. I found "Choices and Illusions" while trying to connect with Eldon for another great book through our http://BestSellerAuthors.com program.
However, I've learned not to question the path that brings me to new learning. In our busy lives, we all leave many path unexplored.. what a joy it is to find new truths, ponder the important questions and discover new realms.
I found "Choices and Illusions" and got the answers I didn't even know I was looking for. So regardless of what brought you to this point, consider the vistas that will open up from one small click today.
Thanks Eldon.

Practical. It is more than a psychological study or talk........2007-09-15
The part I found interesting is when he shares the real-life situations than a mere psychological study that most of us already know or heard enough. This book is entertaining as well as intuitive. A lot of times we think we don't have a choice in certain situations, why? Our life is more than what we are able to see. Read the book and see what you get from it.
Powerful and Practical.......2007-09-15
This is a practical and very powerful book for anyone looking for immediate solution to overcome the "negative beliefs". Such beliefs are so often being ignored and as a result keeping one forever trapped in vicious cycle of negative self-fulfiling prophecy. It is a joy reading this book, as it led me to have a much clearer understanding of the "unconscious adverse conditioning" because of human ignorance, aggravated by the mass media which thrive on negative news reporting. This book opens up a new frontier of possibility for anyone willing to change, through seletive conscious learning, as well as subliminal method which when apply properly is most beneficial in achieving positive results and self empowerment. My family and I learn to become more selective in conducting our daily activities with regards to entertainment and media exposure. I also like the humane aspect, which is so much lacking in our present day society and this book would no doubt help in the re-awakening of the general public towards such direction. Most important of all, this book not only helps one to identify the inherent issues, but to provide effortless and effective solution. Our family and friends are now benefiting from the use of the InnerTalk technologies created by the author in improving the quality of our lives. This is a must read book for anyone who is seriously looking for change.

Book Description
In poetry and prose, seven members of a Virginia-based breast cancer support group express their feelings as they face diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Their voices are unusually powerful and reflect their backgrounds in education, the arts and journalism. The book demonstrates the healing power of words and is being praised by survivors, their families and friends as the first source for expression and confirmation of their own experiences.

A courageous, honest look at the breast cancer experience.......2001-08-28
This writer's group of breast cancer survivors explores the darkness and the light of dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, the most common cancer in American women. The prose, poetry, and vignettes offered in this wonderful collection are presented with power and an honesty that sometimes takes your breath away. For example, one entry is on thoughts of suicide -- something even we breast cancer survivors rarely confess to each other. The writer talks starkly about being surprised to find herself planning (just in case) an act that she had always found dispicable, and speaking with tremndous candor and bravery about her thoughts and reasons for even looking at the issue. Some of the entries are also just plain funny, with the kind of irony that serious illness or disaster sometimes engenders. I'll always keep a vivid image of the account of one of the writer's brothers shopping for Astroglide for her when it was unavailable in her part of the country -- and he did this shopping in full clerical gear and collar! As a two-time breast cancer survivor (so far), I've used this book to focus my own thinking and to help offer peer-to-peer support to other women facing the challenges of the disease and the changes it brings to their lives. I've shared it with my husband to help him understand even more fully the range of effects and emotions caused by breast cancer. I've read whole chapters of it aloud as a member of a therapy group for women with advanced breast cancer. The book has helped us as we explore issues arising from dealing with a less-than-favorable long-term prognosis and the existential questions that arise from being in that situation. If you have or have had breast cancer and have ever wondered, "Does anyone else feel this way, or am I just crazy??" buy this and read it! Believe me, you are not alone! If you have not had the disease, but perhaps are a friend or relative of someone with breast cancer, and if you want to know the emotional experience of having breast cancer, this is the book for you. Can You Come Here Where I Am? is an invaluble resource and also a comfort in showing the common threads of experiencing the diagnosis, treatment and aftermath of breast cancer.
Personal, poignant reponses to diagnosis, treatment........1998-09-25
A wonderful, uplifting, funny and enchanting look at the lives of seven women struggling and living through the rigors of diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. As every woman's nightmare became reality for these women, they chose to pour out their disbelief, anger, frustration and their determination in intensely personal vignettes about life, loss, priorities and survival.
I began this book expecting to be depressed, but found myself laughing as well as crying at vagaries of the medical profession, the common ways we all deceive ourselves, and the ultimate hopefulness of spirit. This is not another book about how to deal with diagnosis, nor is it the narrative of a miracle. It is the lyrical (and sometimes in-your-face) story of the ordinary and extraordinary events that punctuate all our lives.
A wonderful book for anyone touched by breast cancer - survivor, family member or friend - and I suppose that includes all of us.

The Best Collection of Chesterton's Catholic Apologetics.......2007-09-25
Well worth the price to have ,The Catholic Church & Conversion,The Well And the Shallows & The Thing: Why I am a Catholic, all in one volume. Chesterton's writings on the Catholic faith was one of the reasons I came back to the Church. With common sense, humour & erudition Chesterton will convince you of the Truth of the Catholic Faith. Chesterton like all prophetic writers speaks to our time as much as his own.
Incredible.......2007-07-04
Chesterton's genius is unquestionable - not because of the topic(s), but because his' logic is irrefutable.
An Intelligent Guide of Reason, Tradition, and Catholicism.......2006-12-11
G.K. Chesterton has "disturbed" this reviewer again. This reviewer has read Chesterton's books with the view of critisizing his books and ideas. Yet, each time this reviewer has found Chesterton's books a joy to read and "food for thought." Volume III of Chesterton's works is yet another book that thoughtful people should enjoy.
One of the arguments that Chesterton uses in these essays is that Catholic ideas and tradition have lasted while "modern" fads have quickly become dated. One of the agruments that Chesterton uses against Puritanism is that in the early 20th. century, Puritanism was something that no reasonable person would touch with "a barge pole." One of Chesterton's theses in this book is that while Catholcism has remained consistent for 2,000 years, Protestantism has become passe and has changed into meaningless modernism.
Chesterton has an interesting comment on page 280. To paraphrase part of this page, Chesterton remarks that modern Protestantism has replaced predestination with suggestion. The Catholic theologians have defended the Faith (The Catholic Faith) with reason. Along these lines, Chesterton effectively argues that Catholic authorities and theologians helf the beliefs of the Faith in a careful balence. The Protestants and modern agnostics have distorted both their own ideas and concepts by exaggerating parts of religion at the expense of everything else. This has led to distortion.
Chesterton gives reasons for his conversion to Catholicism. He proceeds to explain why other ideas and religious views were not reasonable. He also explains the distortions historians have made regarding the Faith. Chesterton's own intellectual curiousity led him to the Faith which he viewed as more sane and more reasonable.
Chesteron demonstrates historical insight in this volume. This reviewer gets the impression that Chesterton is holding something in reserve in making his historical arguments. He may have been inviting his critics to question his historical knowledge whereby he would give the historical details and knowledge. Readers should note that Chesterton was very knowledable of history.
Another interesting aspect of this book is Chesterton's concern over distoritions of language. He comments that some of the moderns were demanding a universal language and that they got was "journalistic jibberish." Chesterton remarks that Europeans had a universal language-Latin. Chesterton remarks that Latin was a precise language which had been neglected in favor of bad thinking and poor writing.
Chesterton did not engage in ad hominem arguements and was usually generous to his critics. He did not object to comments about his size and appearance. He could laugh at himself. Yet, he offer fierce cefesne of truth and honesty when they were attacked.
Volume III of Chesteron's works is well worth reading. As this reviewer wrote before, some may consider me as skeptic. However, Chesterton's writing, knowledge and reason is enough to make anyone pay attention and read his books to learn and to understand clear thinking.
The undiscovered Chesterton.......2006-01-31
This particular volume in Ignatius Press' collected Chesterton series pulls together his specifically Catholic books. Widely read in his own time, they were later praised by Hillaire Belloc and other writers during the Catholic revival in Britain. Yet they are little read in our time. One reason is that Chesterton converted fourteen years after writing his masterpiece, Orthodoxy, in 1908, and the current Chesterton revival is fueled largely by his novels.
My introduction to these books came in the brief overviews in Dale Ahlquist's G.K. Chesterton: Apostle of Common Sense, which whetted my appetite to read them. One in particular stood out: "The Catholic Church and Conversion." As with Orthodoxy, it's a lively book with a dull title. I was shocked reading his account of the three stages of conversion: 1. Patronizing the Church, 2. Discovering the Church, 3. Running from the Church. But for me, the book was full of shocks of recognition.
I generally don't like Omnibus type volumes such as the Collected Works, and would like to see Ignatius issue this book on its own, but if this is the only way to read it, I highly urge curious readers to obtain this Ignatius edition (Volume Three of the Collected Chesterton). All of the books in this volume were originally issued individually nearly a century ago, and are eminently worth reading. One of them is interesting because GKC wrote it late in life, and reviews some of the ideas in his earlier books. Were these books available individually now, they no doubt would all have reviews on Amazon. As with Orthodoxy, this volume showed me that Chesterton's non-fiction can be as startling and fresh as his fiction.
Simply Magnificent.......2004-05-17
This volume contains essays revolving around GK's conversion to Catholicism. As always, GK is illuminating and entertaining--several parts of these essays had me laughing out loud. GK has a marvelous talent for utterly dismantling an argument, an attitude, or a belief, while remaining so good natured about it that even his intellectual enemies must have liked him at least a little. Here, he mainly takes on Protestantism, modernism, secularism, Liberalism, and several other "isms" of the day that challenged the Catholic Church--some of which at one time or another had even attracted GK himself. In the end, he makes as convincing an argument for Catholicism that anyone could make. In the process, he throws much light on many political and social trends that were just gearing up in the 1920's, like birth control, divorce, moral relativism and secular humanism. GK offers grave predictions for these insufficient ideas, many of which sadly have come true beyond probably even his imagination.

why go through life without an owner's manual on how to live smart?.......2007-04-23
truly, faith is a gift - and no one can proselytize or persuade anyone else, not should they - but how DO we know how to live a good life, how to live the Best Life?
this is a very readable Just-The-Facts explanation - in short essays that you can reference quickly or read slowly - a simple presentation of how to understand and decide the vital issues of a lifetime - applying great scholarship and wisdom to the everyday questions and problems of ordinary life that we all have, that have been true for all the centuries and that will be true until the end of time -
this would be the best Confirmation present for any Catholic - but it's not just for Catholics...because for anyone, what is more important than "settling the God thing" - deciding what to believe and why to have certainty in what we believe? why not figure this out when we are young so that we can live out our lives in accord with principles that hold up? why put off figuring out What Life Is All About?
there is joy in discovering truth and this book would help anyone find out for sure what is true for them and why - living well is not complicated and it's not easy. A good life, the Right Life IS simple and it is hard - but it's not confusing at all.
this book can REALLY help you discern for sure what makes sense to you about the Good, the Beautiful and the True - it's a bargain to get this much clarity and peace of mind for such a fair price.
"Amen" to Patrice's review!.......2006-09-30
This is another one of those books that I wish was written 30 years ago when I was a teen. The information is key to knowing how to correctly form your conscience and make choices; and knowing how to make good choices will affect the rest of your life. The authors make Aquinas very accessable to the average reader. It is written with warmth, some humor and makes the point well. Personally, I think this book should be required reading for every highschooler. This would make a great gift for the teens/young adults on your Christmas list!
Offers Answers for those Questioning Their Faith.......2006-04-10
Have you ever wondered why the Catholic Church teaches what it does on issues of faith and morals? Do you struggle with belief in a personal God? Are you having difficulty making ethical decisions? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then "Where Did I Come From? Where am I Going? How Do I Get There? Straight Answers for Young Catholics" is the book for you. Co-authored by Charles E. Rice, Professor Emeritus at Notre Dame University, and his daughter, Theresa Farnan who is a lecturer in Philosophy at Mt. St. Mary's Seminary, this book seeks to provide black and white answers to a world that often only sees shades of grey.
"Where Did I Come From?" begins by proving the existence of God. This section will seem very familiar to those who have studied the work of Thomas Aquinas. For those who have not, you are in for quite a treat. If you have ever wondered "How can one prove that there is a God using reason," you will now have an answer.
The book then goes on to describe why a Church, in particular the Catholic Church, is necessary, and why there must be a Pope. The authors maintain that the teachings of the Church "are like a manual provided, not by General Motors, but by God himself to show me how to achieve eternal happiness, a goal even more important than changing a tire."
Ethics are also covered in detail. Topics discussed include: how one makes ethical decisions, why there must be a right and a wrong, and the role of our conscience in making decisions. Rice and Farnan delve into difficult ethical issues such as abortion in the case of incest or rape and the removal of feeding tubes. While one may not necessarily agree with their conclusions, they do present the official Church teaching and the reasons for it.
While this book is aimed for young Catholics who are still in the midst of being formed in the faith, it provides a useful tool for Catholics of any age who are seeking for definitive answers.

Great Book for Moves.......2005-04-19
We found this book at the library after returning to the States from overseas. We snuggled and read it before bed on a day when each of my boys had rough moments. I could see the jet lag kicking in, mixed with some transition feelings. They laughed at every page of This is Me and Where I Am (though it isn't written to be funny) and we talked about being here, where we are, in Florida.

God Knows Where I Am.......2006-09-30
This is a MUST READ book for any one that knows God has called them to work among First Nations people on any reservation. I only intended to read a few chapters when I started but I couldn't put it down until I was finished. I found myself crying through their difficult times and shouting when a victory would come. Because my wife and I have a call on our lives to work among the Navajo, I was touched deep, deep, deep in my heart for these missionaries and for the Navajo. My wife and I have taught at a camp meeting on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico the past two summers. This book has stirred me to pray more and seek the wisdom of God more in developing a ministry to the Navajo. It is not a book that I will read only once but rather over and over and over. I must say a hugh THANK YOU to Lynn Cartwright for telling the story of the beginnings of her's and her husband's and children's ministry to the Navajo.
You Can't Put It Down Until You Finish.......2006-08-15
It is a refreshing and inspirational account that explores the fears, frustrations and doubts, as well as the rewards and joys of putting your life in God's hands. It reminded me of the historical novel series, "The Work and the Glory", as people struggle to follow God; but the events described in this book are happening today to people residing in the Four Corners area of the United States. It is full of events and insights that touch both your heart and mind and help you through the trials and tribulations of daily living. The unspoken sharing between peoples of totally foreign cultures and backgrounds when Chee, the 90 year-old Zuni grandfather who spoke no English, had never been to school, and had married into the Navajo tribe, paused from his chores to witness the morning mist in the mountains. At the same time, a short distance away, Lynn, the suburban easterner who had invaded his world high in the Arizona mountains - a woman who did not know how to cook over an open fire, who got huge blisters carrying water or chopping firewood, a woman who cried at perfectly natural things like birthing a baby also paused in her morning chores to watch, and then felt Chee's reaching out to her, "So now there is no wide grin, not even an almost smile, but a steady gaze in my direction and a half nod that says, "I'm glad you saw it too."" Or when Tom Begay used his experiences in Vietnam to emphasize the importance and impact of the words we speak each day. Or when four year-old Larissa helped her family realize that Thanksgiving doesn't come from the things you think you must have but by seeing the things that you didn't realize you do have.
It is a story of frustration as Lynn prays, "I don't like this Lord. I know I prayed for understanding but couldn't you give it to me in some other way?" It is a story of wonder that I want to share with others and I think you will also.
A Wonderful Story of Hope and Inspiration........2006-07-08
This is a beautiful story about a brave few who beat the odds to help a people learn about God. It is a great story.
