I loved it. The story is told in clear, simple language that makes it easy for children to understand (Crucial in a book geared for a younger crowd) and the illustrations are breathtaking and accurate.

This book is Simple and touching. Its very simple to read but goes into the depths of her short and in the end devastating life. She had a simple life and she loved it but the last and dark days that she spent in the secret annexe.

iT turns out that Otto Frank was the only one to survive out of all the secret annex (peter wasn't heard from) everyone else died. If only she had survived the last couple of weeks then she would be free once more.

As a sixth grader I really enjoyed the book Anne Frank. The story was about Anne Frank,A brave young Jewish girl about 12 years old and her fourting year old sister. She found out at age 14 years old that she had to put a lot of cloths on. She had to hide in the attic for three years so the Nazis would not find them. It took place in Germany where her family lived. She once lived in a house,If she went to school she would be shot. The Nazis burnt all the Jewish books and pictures. A lot of children hid so they would not be shot because the people that hid them or they would be shot with no questions asked. The only person who survived was her dad, and the reason her mom died first, and Anne and her sister died after. I think the person who reads the book would cry or be really interesting in it. The book is based on her family life as a Jew in Germany.

I'm a 6th grader. This book is about Anne Frank when she was a young girl. Anne was born on June 12,1929. She had an older sister named Margot. Her parents names were Edith and Otto Frank. Her family lived in Frankfurt for hundreds of years. She had a peaceful life until the Nazis came. Anne Frank died when she was fifteen years old. Then someone found Anne's Frank diary, which got published in 1947. This is the best book I ever read because I like how it is written, telling the story clearly. I like how she did not die until she was fifteen years old. If I was Anne I don't think I would I have lasted that long because I don't think I could take care of myself that long.

A photo memoir of Anne Franks' life.......2006-09-21

A nice little book about the life of a 16 year old girl killed by the Nazis. Despite the fact that Anne was persecuted and made to live in horrible conditions, she still maintained her humanity. Her killers however lost their humanity. This was a sad tale of a teenage girl living a life she should not have had to live.

I learned a lot from this book. I have scanned her diary, but have not read it completely. This book is a great addition, because it gives you a summary history plus lots of photos on the life of Anne Frank.

A Great Resource For Learning A bout The Holocaust.......2006-05-12

I am in Sixth Grade and when my teacher started talking about some day in March and when she asked us "does anybody know what today is" only the war-historian in our class knew. It was holocaust remberance day...and I had no idea! We started this book and I started learning all these new things about the holocaust, what it was and how horribile it was. If you have the guts to read a 100% true book about the holocaust, then this is A GREAT BUY! BUY THIS FOR YOURSELF OR AS A TEACHING RESOURCE...IT'S GREAT!!!

I rated this book a five because while you read it makes you relize that you are so lucky you weren't born in those very tragic times.It made me think about how easy I, and others have it.I love this book because it teaches me about other peoples lives and how hard it was for them.I also think that it was well written and easy to understand.I'm not positive that you will like this book because of how sad and frightning the tale is, but if you are anything like me you will have your face stuck in a book 'till your done.

In this visual chronology, Gilbert's narrative compellingly captures the richness of Jewish life in Europe before the rise of Nazism, the effects of antisemitism, and, ultimately, the destruction of much of European Jewry. Also portrayed is evidence of the desperate search by many Jews for safe haven, after 1933, from the horror which was to come. The knowledge that a multitude believed that such a thing as the systematic mass murder of millions was impossible, and/or that the threat would pass, is what truly consternates and deeply saddens. However, there were few places of safety to accommodate even those who did want to leave their homes.

An excellant companion and suppliment to Martin Gilbert's early work The Holocaust which I have read many times. Well written with many pictures that only reenforce the words.

I peticulary feel great admiration for the author by the fact that he does not waste the reader's time by adding politcally correct 'victims' to the list of the persecuted as most writers on this subject have done to history's detriment. Though Gypsies are entitled to have the extent of their suffering at the hands of the nazis known. They too were forced into the ghetos and were often shoved onto the same trains and the same gas chambers with the Jews, though occasionally on thier own.

A good way to present the Holocaust.......2002-05-07

I have been interested in the Holocaust for some time, and picked up this book because it seemed like it would be a good overview, and still give me the human side of the story. I was happy to find out that it was very well presented--every two pages is a new topic, and it is laid out with pictures, graphs, and personal recollections which make it easy to grasp. The book is laid out chronologically, which makes it easy to follow, and the language isn't difficult to understand.

Mr. Gilbert's grasp of history and what makes history accessible is discovered during the reading of this book. He seems to know that, with this topic especially, the use of personal stories personifies the experience for the reader.

A very good book, and I would recommend it to anyone.

A powerful retelling.......2000-07-25

Martin Gilbert, better known for extremely detailed, research-heavy histories and biographies, has chosen to work from established primary and secondary sources in this history of the Holocaust. As a result, the reader with a strong background in this history will not find much new. However, the book is extremely well-written and very accessible--I read it in two sittings, and my 12-year-old brother has just started it.

In addition to effective writing, Gilbert includes some chilling photographs and reproductions of other primary sources. Especially disturbing are German documents cold-bloodedly noting that so many Jews arrived at such-and-such a camp, of whom X were killed immediately, and Y put to work.

Parents who believe their children are of an appropriate age might consider reading this book together as a way of introducing the most important, and most horrific, crime of this century. It is important.

Wonderful Book On A Horrific Period in 20th Century History!.......2000-07-23

When one of the world's most eminent historians takes on the single most amazing phenomenon of the century, the Holocaust, it gives one pause for thought. So here we have Sir Martin Gilbert, a noted Holocaust authority, writing masterfully about the events leading up to and including the systematic persecution, deportation and murder of the Jews of Europe. His stirring and singular narrative is regularly punctuated by a number of poignant and shocking eyewitness accounts of many who lived through those numbing events. The test is extremely approachable and easy to read, so that the non-historian can appreciate the breadth and scope of his recounting of the events during the 12-year reign of terror levied by the National Socialists in Nazi Germany.

His approach is chronological, much like that employed in his best-selling three volume series on the 20th century. While he relies heavily on established secondary sources for his documentation, the power of his prose and his well-organized approach makes this an entertaining and educational tome to venture into. Although nowhere near as comprehensive as some other tomes such as Klaus Fischer's "History Of An Obsession", he does trace the centuries' long tradition of anti-Semitism culminating in the official state sanctioned approach codified in the institutionalized Nuremberg laws. In all this, Gilbert brilliantly employs survivor's recollections to paint the atrocities in the hues and colors of real human beings, ordinary and identifiable individuals caught in the insanity of the Third Reich. Furthermore, he pursues their individual identities and humanity by giving the reader information on the postwar futures of these people.

So much has been written about the Holocaust that it is difficult to imagine much new or novel to arise some fifty years after the end of the war. Yet the stage always remains open for the unusual display of finely crafted historical perspectives and brilliantly executed prose. The brilliance in this dazzling book is, as Oscar Schindler would have said, in the presentation. Although I have read a number of other books about these times and events that were more detailed, more graphic, or more comprehensive, this is without a doubt the single most impressive, cohesive, and authoritative volume I have read to date regarding the Holocaust in its enormity, and placed in an understandable and comprehensible context. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in owning the single best one-volume book summarizing and explaining the realities of the Holocaust.

I visited Anne Frank's huis in Amsterdam. This book not only brought me back there, but allowed me to digest the details of what they illustrated. Very moving! A topic people all over the world mustn't forget.

While the book followed the tour of the house, there are areas of the book that seem to have a weak translation into English. I wanted to absorb every written word, but there were areas that were not very clear. But I wouldn't give up the book for that. Thank you Ms Westra! And Thank you Mr. Frank for sharing the story of your precious little girl. I'm sure you are with her now.

It's a beautiful book, well made and with many, many large photos, and I heartily recommend it. But it's not so beautiful as to warrant inadvertantly buying two, like I did. ;)

Look at the subject it says it all. Basically its about the history beyond her, hiding place, diary. The text and photos wre good. Basically knew everything about her, but the main reason bought book is the photos that I haven't seen it yet. Thank you.

An Illustrated Journey.......2005-01-09

I have long been interested in the story of Anne Frank. Over the years I have read many books about her and I continue to reread the diary every year. Recently, this book came to my attention and I gave it a read. There is much about it that impresses.

This book is subtitled An Illustrated Journey Through Anne's World and that seems appropriate. The key attraction of the book are the hundreds of photos that fill its pages, many of which I had never seen before. With its oversize, coffee table book format, and slick pages, it is a beautiful thing to look at. Where the book begins to let the reader down is the text.

Granted, the text is minimal and what there is can be highly informative and descriptive; however, I noticed a number of typos in my edition and many of the pictures were mislabeled (if the label could be found at all). It also seemed like different people were in charge of different sections of the book because there was no consistency to the presentation. I actually liked the structure of the first section of the book, where German history ran in small pictures along the bottom of the pages and the Frank family filled the top. I wish this style would have continued because it was very informative and allowed the reader to make connections but this was dropped rather quickly.

Still, there is a lot to be said for this book. It's cliche that a picture says a thousand words but it is amazing the emotion that is captured in some of these shots, particularly if you know the story behind them.

We Remember, If Only We Would Learn.......2004-12-15

It's an ordinary house, not spectacular at all. It wouldn't be worth photographing at all except for the extraordinary young lady who lived here and who kept a diary during one of those times when the devil was loose on the earth and good men did nothing to stop him.

But because of this young lady and her extraordinary diary this house is a monument, a church if you will, that commemorates not just this girl but all of those who went with her, and all of those who tried to help them.

The book itself is beautifully done, not only a photographic guide but a history, a memorial in its own right with quotations and photographs of objects displayed in the actual exhibition. ==Let us never forget!

Let us also remember the other holocausts that followed to prove that we didn't learn enough: Rwands, Cambodia, Ethnic Cleansing in former Yugoslavia, and what may happen in Iraq between the Sunni, Shiite, and Kurds.

Two SS photographers documented the entire process of arrival of shipments of Jews to the platform in the Birkenau concentration camp, the selection process, and their path to the gas chambers and the crematoria. Haunting.......2007-01-18

I originally saw these photos on exhibit in Chicago, and couldn't get them out of my mind. So, I bought the book. The photos aren't at all gory, there are no shots of skinny corpses or gruesome remains in ovens. Instead they are photos of every day people. I think that makes them all the more chilling because these are people we can relate to. It's hard to put this book down once you start reading it. The story is fascinating, the photos will haunt you. You can clearly see the looks on the peoples' faces. It's a look of blind terror, the faces of people resigned to their doom. As a reader you know most all of these people will be dead an hour after these photos were taken. It's not light reading but it's one of my most remembered books.

Mercenaries of World War II.......2005-07-01

This book proves to be a well written and well illustrated book on the foreign soldiers who fought and died for Hitler's Third Reich. The author keep things simple and carefully summarized how, when and why so many various foreign nationals chooses to fight for a regime that proves to be so racially hateful. It seem to be interesting that Germans played its "anti-communist" card very well in recuiting foreign nationals to fight for them. Many volunteers from Western Europe came through that route. Fight against Stalin were another reason for the eastern Europeans to joined up with the Germans. Ethnic warfare, various form of anti-Semitic movements and desire for independence like the Indians were all part of the reasons why these foreign nationals fought for Germany. Some like Spaniards or the Italians were sent by their governments to Russia where they had a terrible time.

The author also reflects on how these foreign nationals were used, how good they were and how they were trained and organized. Its interesting to note that once the German authority took them out of their homelands, many of these eastern European troops became discouraged and their effectiveness suffered. The book also point out how the Germans themselves have to adjust and adapt to many of their foreign soldiers, some like the Russians who were regarded as "sub-human" and amount of trust place upon some of them.

The book also points out that at the end of the war, the British and American powers exactly didn't covered themselves with glory when they sent hundred of thousands of people back to Russia against their will where they were destroyed by Stalin. Western Europeans on the whole, met a kindlier fate then their eastern comrades.

Overall, a very informative book, it got great photographs, the writing proves to be easy to read and the book appears to be well researched considering that its more of an introductory book to this subject matter.

I have already amassed a sufficient collection of both historical and mystical Judaica, and I expected "just another Holocaust book." I was stunned by what the editors have assembled. Some of the photos are familiar: the little boy with hands held high, surrendering to the Nazis; piles of corpses; scenes from the ghettos. Yet, the way the book was structured, the manner in which the images were skillfully woven together with enthralling text, made for outstanding reading. The final photo, juxtaposing the stripes of the freed prisoners' uniforms with the stripes of the new Israeli flag, made me cry. I will treasure this volume for many years to come.

Excellent book.......1999-05-11

Andrea Liss is a professor of mine and I have to say that this book is excellent!!!! She has an amazing way of making the reader really think about this subject in a whole new way. It is VERY moving to go through the pages, reading true stories. I HIGHLY recommend this title to anyone interested in the Holocaust.

Atrocities committed by the Nazis during the Holocaust were photographed extensively. These images have been subjected to a perplexing variety of treatments: variously ignored, suppressed, distorted and--above all--exploited for propaganda purposes or political interest. This book examines the history of this aspect of the Holocaust--its aftermath and afterlife. Whether taken by Nazis or their collaborators, by Jews themselves, their sympathizers and the resistance movements in the occupied territories, or by Allied forces at the end of the war, Struk suggests that the provenance of these images has been seen as of secondary importance to their meaning and the political ends they have been used for--from the desperate attempts of the war-time underground, to the memorial museums of Europe, the US and Israel today. Struk recounts the history of the use and abuse of Holocaust photographs and asks whether or not these images can serve as "evidence", as true representations of the events they depict. The book is illustrated with a wide range of photographs, including some never before seen.
