Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A clear (and gorgeous) presentation.......2007-10-02

As a beginning student of design, I've been looking at a number of texts. This is the best I've come across so far. The concepts are presented concisely and in a well-organized format. The illustrations are superb, drawing from a number of crafts, media, and styles. The tone is friendly and encouraging. Recommended highly!

5 out of 5 stars Easy Reading Design Education.......2007-08-07

This book is a very good choice if you are looking to broaden your horizons in design. There are lots of pictures for examples, and the text is easy reading.

5 out of 5 stars Well-written guide with a wide range of aesthetically pleasing examples........2007-01-09

The book is well-written and the examples include some stunning and unusual pieces of art and craft (including painting, photography, pottery, needlework, quilting and more). It is an excellent introduction to design for beginners (artists, craftsmen and art-lovers) but even intermediate readers will find it useful.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2006-08-17

This book is a great resource. It is packed with exciting, richly varied visuals and clear, informative exercises that will enrich daily appreciation and application of principles of good design all around us. As a professional artist and teacher, I enjoy this book for myself as well as share it with my students. Design! is a great resource for the student or professional.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant reading.......2004-10-15

True! Design is everywhere you look but if you don't understand what you are staring at then design is useless. Fortunately, Steven Aimone's Design! will open up your mind and guide you to see the purpose of design. What are descriptive, narrative, emotive, utilitarian, and decorative of designs? What are the elements of design (lines, shapes, textures, colors, etc.)? Why are a certain elements arranged they way they are? Why is design space important? If you're unclear about the answers to these questions, this book will help you straightened out.

As someone who gets involved with web design as a passion, I had no prior training on design. While my classes at La Salle were too busy shoving down Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and other software programs, the fundamentals of design were not part of the curriculum. One of our art professors realized the important of the missing part and tried to cover it but the class was not as successful as it should be. The hands on assignments she gave us (the black squares exercises) were definitely on the right track but most of my classmates thought they were kindergarten because the theories were missing. If she had this book to accommodate her assignments, the class would have been a huge success; therefore, Design! should be a required textbook for any Art 101 or Introduction to Visual Design classes at colleges and universities.

Design! is not only an invaluable design inspiration but an enjoyable reading as well because of its easy to read approach and clear visual examples. I recommend this book enthusiastically to anyone who designs for a living or pleasure and to anyone who simply enjoys and appreciates the aesthetic qualities from the work of art.

5 out of 5 stars Marketing 101.......2007-07-20

Regardless of whether you like the "warfare" analogies or not, the concepts discussed in this book is Marketing 101 for marketers.

First Ries/Trout explain which method of attack your company should use depending on its position in the marketplace. Then they describe what each position should do. Then they use some great classic case studies like the beer wars, cola wars, and computer wars.

Usually I hate these "outdated" books but the content in here is classic. They've updated the book and critiqued their own predictions made 20 years ago. For example, with over 50% of the PC marketshare, they were certain that IBM would remain the leader. Ooops.

Highly recommended for marketers.

3 out of 5 stars Of all the books, this one is the weakest.......2007-03-30

I found this one to be the weakest of all the books by Ries and Trout. As Creative Director of AUDIN Web Design, it just didn't capture my interest like their other books. Don't get me wrong, I think these authors are geniuses and I love their books. This one just didn't do it for me; I think it was the warfare motif. I'm not a pacifist, but it just didn't work for me: Warfare as Marketing. The funny thing is that I actually bought this book twice: once ten years ago in paper back and then again in hardback more recently. That goes to show you how forgettable I thought this book was. If you are on a real tight budget, buy a different book by these authors.

    Book Description

Nearly 40 years ago, contemplating a dogfight between Israeli and Syrian jets, Shimon Tzabar got to thinking about how war works. The result is a crystal-clear, at times funny inversion of such classics as Sun-Tzu’s The Art of War. Readers find the facts on why often — almost always, in major conflicts throughout history — victory is not all it’s cracked up to be. Practical advice is offered as well, such as what to do if you’re in danger of winning, and how to surrender in the midst of a firefight. This new illustrated edition of the 1974 original includes updated information on the latest international conflicts, and confirms the timelessness of the White Flag Principle.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Shimon Tzabar should have sticked with studying mushrooms!.......2007-04-16

Shimon Tzabar have based his theory on a few observations. Like what he called a 'retreat'. That 'retreat' could be seen by others as a from of maneuver warfare, assymatric warfare or hit-and-run.
Being a loser may sometimes have positive sides, but not always!!! If you look further in history. There lots more of examples where the loser was wiped out or became slaves.

5 out of 5 stars How to lose at war.......2003-08-03

After explaining the benefits of military defeat the author carefully explains how nations can achieve defeat. The author expounds on the necessities of mistreating your troops, opening tactical gaps in your lines and encouraging the enemy to encircle you. An extremely entertaining read.

4 out of 5 stars A Unique, Unorthodox Approach to Modern Warfare.......2003-08-02

Once one looks past Tzabar's absolutely confident tone, a unique approach to the victor/loser relationship emerges with questionable factual backing. While a good read for anyone interested in the 'art' of war, The White Flag Principle also can spark the interest of those concerned with the new political atmosphere of today's world. With the US as the only superpower, the text provides a step by step handbook approach for anyone looking to benefit through a carefully administered defeat at the hands of such overwhelming force. A unique and thought provoking text, but it receives only 4 stars for the manifesto style writing of Tzabar.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The author rates 5 stars as an antagonist, the book 3 stars........2001-02-12

"The Principles of War For the Information Age" is an ambitious book seeking to not only redefine but replace the traditional MOOSEMUSS (maneuver, objective, offensive, surprise, economy of force, mass, unity of command, simplicity, and security) principles of war. The book consists mainly of the author's thoughts with only a few weak historical examples given as evidence. The book does not provide a compelling case for change, but serves well as a thought-provoking essay. One finds enough material to keep the readers' interest to complete the book with an occasional nugget of gold. One has to admire the author's courage in writing the book as an active duty officer. The Army should assign the author to a prestigious military research center or college.

      4 out of 5 stars Unique perspective.......2001-01-20

What really impresed me about this book was Leonhard's application of physics terms to modern warfare. Using quantities like "velocity", "momentum" and "mass", he distills modern warfare to its most basic components, and by so doing, offers the foundation for the proper application of maneuver doctrine in 21st century arms.

While perhaps not as engaging as "The Art of Maneuver", "The Principles of War for the Information Age" is another significant contribution to military theory by an outstanding author.

      2 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment.......2000-12-20

There are some tidbits of wisdom in the soup offered up by Leonhard. Following his excellent The Art of Maneuver, and Fighting by Minutes, Principles begins as a much needed critique of the classical principles of war. He shows with great gusto that many are mutually contradicting, like mass, security, and maneuver. You can't hide a large force, or make it move very quickly. Nor can you hide a moving force.

I suppose Leonhard hoped that his new principles of war would take off, and generate whole new doctrines and policy for the "information age." His Three Laws of War are an excellent step forward in anthropology and psychology, but whether they will be much use on the battlefield or policy centers is unclear.

Rather than scrap aging principles for a new way of thinking, as I had hoped, Leonhard appends several new "principles" to his three laws. Having read his other books with much enjoyment, I was shocked to see him actually state that the quintissential fog of war would be lifted in the information age, especially after the derision he heaped on just that idea in The Art of Maneuver.

Frankly, I would recommend this book to anyone who blindly subscribes to the touted "Principles of War," if only to see more innovative thinking. The latter part of the book, on the "new" principles of war remain to be demonstrated in reality.

      5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking discussion of modern warfare principles........2000-09-05

What are the new ethical and military principles for fighting a war using today's modern machinery and equipment? Principles of War for the Information Age provides a thought-provoking discussion of modern warfare and the new principles of such battle, discussing implications of precision warfare, objectives in war, and civilian and military concerns alike.

5 out of 5 stars Army New thinking is better than old false thinking.......2000-08-07

LTC Leonhard is a brilliant tactician who examines the past, the present and the future simultaneously--a coup d-oeil---creating an understanding of everything far better than cowardly copying the Germans or someone else. He takes what he knows to be true as a current U.S. Army battlefield Commander and applies this experience to fresh thinking far better than any arm-chair wannabe who praises another service that has not done its homework and thought very deep about the issues, but is deep in platitudes. The 9 Principles of war (MOOSE MUSS) as we remember them are actually derived from Clausewitz if another reviewer had his wits about him. They are a guide to thinking no more divinely inspired as the writings of Big Al or the wannabe tacticians of America's sea-based posturers.

LTC Leonhard is one of America's and the Army's best and brightest thinker-warriors who refuses to succomb to the platitudes of the past or the present Germanophiles, who omit in their discussions that maneuverism died in the fortress cities of Tobruk, Stalingrad, Bastogne when it met the defense-in-depth fueled by a nation at total war. We need new thinking not new wine in old wine bottles!

4 out of 5 stars Very Sophisticated Compilation of Essays of Mixed Quality.......2007-04-24

This book is not really for the novice or newcomer to deep theories about warfare, and as such can be at times very opaque and hard to follow. As with any compilation of Essays it can also be meandering and lack a central theme or definite conclusions. Nonetheless this is a generally very well produced compendium of the current philosophies regarding general military affairs (and the US RMA, Revolution in Military Affairs), operational art/doctrine, irregular warfare, post-conflict and stability operations, and intelligence.

The essays cover a very wide ground and almost always divergent and contrasting viewpoints are shown. Some of the essays were particularly interesting and well written, worthy of the price of the book, including standouts such as Ch. 2 by Maj. Gen. Robert H. Scales on how to revamp training and education for the services to meet future needs, Ch 3 on whether our commonly called principles of war are actually principles of battle and if a more transcendent set of principles is required, Ch. 5 by Lt. Col. Ralph Peters who is unabashedly aggressive and confrontational but able to argue cogently and persuasively for his beliefs, and Ch. 15 and Ch. 17 on irregular warfare. However, some of the essays seemed of rather poor quality for a variety of reasons and were tedious reads. Practically all of the essays on Operational Art sounded like academics hand waving and using as many big words as possible to sound really smart without really saying much of anything. Others, most particularly Ch. 21 regarding the use of the military in "Human Security Operations", just sounded like "wouldn't that be nice proclamations" of what the authors thought should be the case based on their own feelings and emotions, and less so on the basis of cold hard facts and analysis. The last critique is that based on the current state of the world the number of essays (three) on irregular warfare seemed too small to be justifiably in proportion with those on operational art and intelligence.

Despite all these drawbacks -natural for any volume of individually contributed essays- this is a good book with a lot of great information on where people with serious influence think the US military should go. It's a vigorous and meaningful debate, and suggested for people well versed in military history and theory as such will be necessary to follow many of the arguments. I will probably re-read it myself after exposing myself to Clausewitz's "On War" considering the prominence of his thoughts in this book.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE, BUY NOW!!!.......2006-06-21

This book is a must have. Some of the best and the brightest have contributed to this anthology of 29 chapters.
If you are interested in the US Army RMA, Revolution in Military Affairs, Transformation and the GWOT, this book has a lot to offer. If you are deploying, buy this book and make sure you read it beFore you deploy; especially chapters 1,3,4,5, 15,16,17, 20, 21 and 23,
In my opinion, the entire book is a real jem and you must read every chapter, footnote and reference.
If your deploying and pressed for time, start with the ones I have suggested and then go from there.
If you are really pressed for time start with chapter 23 and then chapter 1 and 3
For the Ops and the Intel guys at the UA/Bde level and Below this book will make you think of FM 3-0, SASO and the Battlefield Framework for planning COIN/SASO in an entirely different light. If you have read any of the required professional reading from CAC you probably already are; but this book will give you a scientific moment of Ah-Haa.

5 out of 5 stars Reflects Changes in the nature of warfare........2006-01-10

From just about as long as there have been wars people have tried to develop basic principles that define how wars are fought. Sun Tzu, writing about 2,600 years ago, and Clausewitz, writing at the end of the Napoleonic period have both been read and studied for centuries.

In this book leading thinkers from all of the American services as well as other agencies in intelligence, think tanks, the militaries of other nations and more bring together the current thought on how America and others go to war in the current time. Clausewitz's work was based on the concept that nation-states go to war against each other. Today's time where non-governmental agencies, such as al Queda and the various middle eastern revolutionary groups also engage in war brings new aspects to the problem requiring analysis.

Although not an official publication of our Government, this book reflects the thinking that is developing within the military.

1 out of 5 stars This is VERY POOR, FAULTY, UNBALANCED history !!.......2006-10-04

This is VERY POOR FAULTY history !! This is NOT balanced history by any means !! The analyses presented in this book are shalow, misleading, and highly skewed if not outright false ! This book relies EXCESSIVELY upon Jomini - who hasn't been considered credible in military circles for over a century ! This book goes purposely out of its way to downgrade the premier position of Clausewitz - and ignore Clausewitz as much as possible - so much so that this book actually attempts to deny Clausewitz as the author of the famous maxim: "War is a continuation of policy by other means." Instead this book actually gives the credit to Caemmerer for that eternal insight - and NOT Clausewitz ! Most amazingly, this book was written at a time of modern resurgence in the relevance and veracity of Clausewitz as the premier military theorist (even for nuclear war).
        >>>>>The reader would be MUCH better served by reading the more comprehensive, composite works of Azar Gat. "IF" you really want to read about Jomini - then READ JOMINI's Art of War directly - not this skewed rehash trash !
