Book Description

The first single-volume reference to the events, institutions, and cultural forces that have defined the state, the Encyclopedia of North Carolina is a landmark publication that will serve those who love and live in North Carolina for generations to come. Editor William S. Powell, whom the Raleigh News & Observer described as a "living repository of information on all things North Carolinian," spent fifteen years developing this volume. With contributions by more than 550 volunteer writers—including scholars, librarians, journalists, and many others—it is a true "people's encyclopedia" of North Carolina.

The volume includes more than 2,000 entries, presented alphabetically, consisting of longer essays on major subjects, briefer entries, and short summaries and definitions. Most entries include suggestions for further reading. Centered on history and the humanities, topics covered include agriculture; arts and architecture; business and industry; the Civil War; culture and customs; education; geography; geology, mining, and archaeology; government, politics, and law; media; medicine, science, and technology; military history; natural environment; organizations, clubs, and foundations; people, languages, and immigration; places and historic preservation; precolonial and colonial history; recreation and tourism; religion; and transportation.

An informative and engaging compendium, the Encyclopedia of North Carolina is abundantly illustrated with 400 photographs and maps. It is both a celebration and a gift—from the citizens of North Carolina, to the citizens of North Carolina.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-05

A great book by a great historian. Not only is this an essential reference guide to all things in North Carolina, but it represents a culmination Professor Powell's career, one of North Carolina's greatest treasures. I purchased it not only because I wanted it but also as a means of honoring Professor Powell. In regard to the comment about the lack of biographies in this book, I assume that comment was made in jest. But for those not familiar with Professor Powell's previous works, he previously published (in the late 1970's and 1980's) a six volume "Dictionary of North Carolina Biographies."

3 out of 5 stars Needs improvement. Serious omissions........2007-01-19

Encyclopedic guides to states, cities and regions are coming hot off the presses now. I was anxiously awaiting this one, but I've come away slightly disappointed. Most obvious to me at first are the serious omissions in the book: There are absolutely ZERO biographical articles in here. What happened there? There's an article for every imaginable institution of higher learning, including many long extinct, but not an entry for James K. Polk, William Tryon, Michael Jordan, Jesse Jackson, James Taylor or Jessie Helms. Not all North Carolina natives, mind you, but all with profound impacts on the state's history. Some general entries (such as "Mealtimes") aren't immediately applicable to North Carolina at all, but are linked by a contrived peculiarity, as could be done for any other state in the country. Impressive in scope and certainly not a complete failure, but incomplete enough to justify a much improved second edition.

5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of NC.......2007-01-18

This book has lots of wonderful information about the Tar Heel State. I recommend the book to newcomers to our state as well as to NC natives. This would be a great resource for students in the fourth grade to use.

5 out of 5 stars Encylopedia of North Carolina.......2007-01-18

Dr. William Powell, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Carolina, has published this huge book which contains everything you may ever wish to know about the history of North Carolina. It is well written and easy to use.

5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of NC - Must Have Reference for North Carolinians.......2007-01-18

I got the Encyclopedia of NC as a gift for my Dad. I was able to browse through it before I gave it to him. The variety of entries on North Carolina is exhaustive (the subject "privies" is included). Most entries are concise but others longer. My dad keeps it by his easy chair and reads it regularly. I can easily say it is the best gift I have given him in his 85 years. I think it belongs in at least every native North Carolinian's home.

Book Description

This first-ever encyclopedia of the Midwest seeks to embrace this large and diverse area, to give it voice, and help define its distinctive character.

Organized by topic, it encourages readers to reflect upon the region as a whole. Each section moves from the general to the specific, covering broad themes in longer introductory essays, filling in the details in the shorter entries that follow. There are portraits of each of the region's twelve states, followed by entries on society and culture, community and social life, economy and technology, and public life.

The book offers a wealth of information about the region's surprising ethnic diversity--a vast array of foods, languages, styles, religions, and customs--plus well-informed essays on the region's history, culture and values, and conflicts. A site of ideas and innovations, reforms and revivals, and social and physical extremes, the Midwest emerges as a place of great complexity, signal importance, and continual fascination.

From Choice
"The American Midwest considers 12 states that the editors believe have a particular sense of identity: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin...Other essays are affectionate and penetrating portraits of the 12 states as viewed by local experts...Summing Up: Recommended. All levels." July 2007 -- J. Drueke, University of Nebraska--Lincoln

From Ohioana Quarterly, Summer 2007 "Middle-American people, landscapes, and culture all stand to benefit from this weighty work of scholarship...provides us with a holistic guide for understanding ourselves, our neighbors, our regional landscape, and our place on the national stage."

5 out of 5 stars History that's great reading, and interesting .......2006-07-04

This captures the sense of "being there", and pulls the reader into Appalachia history, like reading a good novel.

Concisely edited for maximum impact, without loss of content.(a fine balancing act by the editors, that took over a decade to compile!)

This is so engaging, tha I have bought several as gifts.

Outstanding documentation, and great storytelling abound.

Reference, coffetable, and personal library uses are a must.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Overview of Appalachian Culture, Music, Literature & Religion.......2006-06-21

As a undergrad who is finishing up my studies in History with a minor in Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State-I will go on and get my master's in Appalachian & Bluegrass studies .
This is a well-written resource that is full of any information of the Appalachia's. From literature, religion, mountain music, conservation, culture, movies, Foxfire,-more than you can digest in one reading.

The author breaks each catagory down in sections that deal with a specific topic. This is a must for your library. This is a thick volume that should have been broken down into 4 volumes. the book is very bulky and heavy. I guess all the education and reading does weigh a lot!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pair: Two Books That Change The Way We See Appalachia.......2006-05-15

Like Amazon's pairing, and featured on National Public Radio, The Encyclopedia of Appalachia and The United States of Appalachia: How Southern Mountaineers Brought Independence, Culture and Enlightenment to America, are two excellent and landmark books in understanding the history, cultures and social importance of the Southern Mountains to our country. The Encyclopedia is divided into several sections: land, people, economy, culture, and institutions (such as schools, media). Like any encyclopedia, the entries are short but concise, and provide just enough information to inform but not bore you and give a long list of resources for more scholarship. The experts and authors that contributed to the book come from colleges around the South and nation. Just leafing through this opus is rewarding. The richness and diversity of the region come through in every section. The United States of Appalachia is similar in its theme -- that Appalachia has been overlooked and undervalued -- but it provides more in-depth and inspiring portraits of Appalachian Americans who have been on the cutting edge of American innovations and social movements. It is divided into several parts: music, American Revolution, abolitionist movement, labor movements, literature, civil rights movement, and the environment.

Both of the these books are indispensable and highly recommended for all readers interested in history and life from one of our country's most misunderstood regions.

5 out of 5 stars The Reference for the Region.......2006-03-25

I was priviledged to be at the Appalachian Studies conference where this mammoth work was unveiled, and it achieves it's purpose: it is a tremenous reference for all things Appalachian. I first knew about the encyclopedia when my father was contacted a few years ago to author a few articles for inclusion in the agriculture section. The editors have worked hard to find the most qualified people to write in every section- my dad grew up in Buchanan County, Virginia on a sustenance farm, and is now an agronomist who works for the University of Kentucky. Every contributor is this qualified!

One note: if you are looking for an "introduction" to the Appalachian Region, this is not it. This is more of a reference, reading this cover to cover would be somewhat comparable to reading the dictionary through, I would imagine. If you want an introduction, go for "A Handbook to Appalachia", by University of Tennessee Press, or, for a less scholarly but quite interesting take, the Foxfire series.

When I got my copy of the Encyclopedia, I was very impressed. I can't wait until I have time to sit down with it for a long while and simply browse through its pages and see how many new things I learn. As an undergraduate researcher in Appalachian Religion, I look forward especially to reading the religion section as edited by Howard Dorgan (whom I luckily had the chance to meet at the conference), the premier authority on religion in Appalachia.

For all scholars of Appalachia, this reference is invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2006-03-15

Comprehensive tome on every aspect of life in the Appalachian region. Some 1800 pages, 30 sections. 170 articles on music alone. Appalachia is not your grandfather's mountain anymore!
If you thought the hills were about hoedowns and yee-haws, this volume will make you think again. Consider, for example, that just in the musical sphere, Jimmy Blanton, Bessie Smith, George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Ray Brown, and Edgar Meyer were all born and raised in Appalachia.

Book Description

The South Carolina Encyclopedia is a comprehensive single-volume reference for just about anything anyone would want to know about the Palmetto State's rich cultures and storied heritage, from prehistory to the present day. The encyclopedia is the result of a six-year collaboration between the Humanities Council SC, the Institute for Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina, and the University of South Carolina Press. Under the editorial direction of distinguished historian Walter Edgar, 598 contributors have come together to write more than one million words depicting the people, places, and things that define South Carolina.

The encyclopedia is an authoritative, entertaining compilation of essays on a broad array of topics ranging from war and politics to arts and recreation, from agriculture and industry to popular culture and ethnicity. Among the nearly two thousand entries are such diverse subjects as the Boykin spaniel, John C. Calhoun, Sarah Moore Grimké, Hootie and the Blowfish, Indian mounds, Matthew J. Perry, Rainbow Row, Surfside Beach, and white lightning. The palmetto bug, Lizard Man, and okra are all here, as are hurricanes, the Orangeburg Massacre, and yellow fever. Included as well are essays on every South Carolina county, every town with a population of twenty-five hundred or greater, and all elected governors and U.S. senators from the state. Famous figures and infamous characters, historic events and tragic moments, celebrated creatures and provocative lore, staple crops and new industries, the encyclopedia catalogs all of this and much more.

As diverse as the populations that live within the thirty-one thousand square miles that make up the Palmetto State, the entries included in The South Carolina Encyclopedia were chosen to best represent the many facets of our shared experiences that remind us of who we are, where we come from, what we have in common, and why we are distinctive.

The South Carolina Encyclopedia is a comprehensive introduction to the state for students and newcomers, and a treasure trove of rich details and lively insights for those already steeped in South Carolina's history and culture. With its accessible format, four hundred black-and-white and forty color illustrations, and seventy-eight original maps, this volume invites a broad readership and placement in classrooms, libraries, archives, government offices, businesses, economic development agencies, media newsrooms, and—of course—home bookshelves. As the single most inclusive reference for all things South Carolinian, this truly is a people's encyclopedia.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive. Best of the bunch........2007-01-19

These types of books are becoming popular. You can buy them for quite a few cities, states and regions now: Chicago, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Appalachia, etc... As you might expect, any attempt to cram hundreds of years of history, millions of diverse people and hundreds of places into a thousand pages or so needs to be appreciated for breadth rather than depth. Don't come here looking for an architectural survey of the state, or a penetrating analysis of slavery versus states' rights, or a profound discussion of the differences between German Lutherans and Swiss Calvinists. It's not here. What is here is better than any travel guide, and more efficient than any comprehensive history tome. This is the best one of the lot, I've found. You're not going to be upset by glaring omissions or factual error. It's well done, and it's an attractive book. Perhaps most important, Dr. Edgar is THE South Carolina authority, with a swift command of this state's rich history, towns, institutions and important people. As a native Southerner, and ever-moving nomad, this book makes me homesick. That's a good sign.

3 out of 5 stars An Uneven Work.......2006-10-08

When I look at some of the entries in the Encyclopedia, I found unfortunate errors and very superficial research. The entry on Orangeburg County relies on the 1898 (that's right, 108 years old) history of the county by Alexander Salley, an ancient secondary source notorious for its inaccuracies. Several entries describe the early Swiss settlers (who dominated the earliest settlement of several large SC counties) as Lutherans, when in fact they were overwhelmingly Swiss Reformed, or Calvinist. Familiarity with primary sources would have told the authors and editor this. When we look for the settlers in Swiss parish records, they are in Reformed congregations. When we find records of the ordinations of ministers (prior to Giessendanner converting to the established Church of England in order to be paid by the colony) they are Reformed ordinations in Europe (for example Zubly, Theus) or Presbyterian if in South Carolina (for example, Giessendanner). When knowledgeable contemporaries refer to the religion of the Swiss settlers in Carolina, they say or imply that they were Reformed or Calvinist. Even Reimensperger's brochure encouraging Swiss to settle in Carolina specifies that potential settlers should be Reformed. Secondary sources would also provide the same information. Modern histories of the Presbyterian and Lutheran denominations in South Carolina acknowledge that the Swiss immigrants were Reformed. The Lutherans appear in SC only with the somewhat later immigration of Germans, who differed from the Swiss in other aspects of culture and history, as well as in religion. It is hard to understand how such a basic error regarding a significant part of early settlement in the state could be made in the Encyclopedia. Another entry tells us that the most "vibrant" German-speaking community in SC was in Charleston. I'm afraid the authors didn't have much information on which to base a comparison.

I'm sure that the Encyclopedia is much more accurate in areas closer to the editor's areas of research, but I would have to evaluate the work as uneven in quality.

Looking for very old maps of the Big City, the Mayoral and Presidential elections, Capsules of about every neighborhood in all 5 boroughs, histories of Broadway, Wall Street, MidTown, Columbia and NYU, the New School, and every other educational institution. Music from Classical to Jazz to Pop to Rock (but there is no listing for Sinatra! I think there should be.)How about the incredible skyscapers, docks, restaurants, clubs. And all this goes back to 1624, when the Dutch first settled. And sections on about every leading NYC personality ever. (though for some reason Mantle and Dimaggio are not listed separately, amoung many other famous NYC sports stars ). Even though the book is 10 years old, it is about as timeless as you can get, even with my very few small quibles mentioned!

This tome, as I like to think of it, is spectacular in it's scope. It covers everything from hospitals that have long since closed, to details about the city's aqueduct water transportation system. You usually go to the book, in order to look up a specific piece of information, but spend hours perusing entries you never heard of and discovering things about America's largest city that make you gasp. If you live in New York, get this book. It holds an essential place on any New Yorker's bookshelf.

    Book Description

Often defined by the familiar images of taciturn Yankees, town meetings, maple syrup, and rocky seacoasts, New England is both a distinctively American place and a distinctive place within America. Yet these images present only one aspect of the richly varied region that is New England in the twenty-first century. Today traditional scenes of white-clapboard buildings surrounding an idyllic village green, hillside farms, and red-brick mills rub shoulders with advanced research centers, nuclear power plants, and urban neighborhoods of immigrants from around the globe.

In entries written by leading authorities in the field, The Encyclopedia of New England presents a comprehensive view of this important region, past and present. Both authoritative and entertaining, this single-volume reference will be an invaluable resource for the scholar and an irresistible pageturner for the browser.

5 out of 5 stars If You Love New England, You Will Love This Encyclopedia!.......2007-02-11

Though organized a bit unconventionally "New England. the Culture and History of an American Region" is a wonderful addition to the growing number of State and regional encyclopedias being published in the United States.

An independent America owes much to New England for the region's political and military leaders, indeed much of its population, played a seminal role in this country's fight for independence. Massachusetts alone provided more fighting men to the Continental Army and more private fighting ships than any other colony. And the region's culture is at the core of America's.

Entries in this encyclopedia are organized into twenty-two major categories, beginning with "Agriculture" and ending with "Tourism". They illuminate not only the history, but everyday life in modern New England. Most entries end with suggestions for further reading.

The result is a wonderfully compiled and written single-volume that addresses every imaginable aspect of life in new England.

Best of all, the volume is available from Amazon for about half the price being charged at most retail book stores.

If you love New England, you will love this encyclopedia!

    1 out of 5 stars A textbook in disguise.......2006-11-10

I am from New England and was looking forward to receiving this book. It reads like a textbook and is incredibly boring. Don't waste your money!

5 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia of New England.......2005-10-19

This is a great reference but, unlike many others, it is not simply a list of things with discussion. It is written as a carefully woven story of New England. It is fascinating and wonderful to read.

5 out of 5 stars Review from SeaCoast NH website.......2005-09-28

"Finally, a book that defines New England. And it wasn't easy. Just released, this massive volume weighs as much as our cat. It includes 1.5 million words in 22 thematic sections, written and edited by hundreds of experts. "The Encyclopedia of New England" includes 1,300 entries on important people, places, events, ideas and artifacts, plus 500 illustrations and maps on a total of almost 1,600 pages.
Edited by Burt Feintuch and David H. Watters (both from UNH), this reference of New England culture includes an introduction by poet Donald Hall. New England, as you will soon see, is much more than white steeples, stone walls and maple syrup." (from Seacoast NH website)

4 out of 5 stars A Good Overview Of Cleveland History.......2007-03-31

Updated for the city's Bicentennial celebration, the book is part of an ongoing series based on The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History.

Northeast Ohio historical consultant Carol Poh Miller and respected college professor Robert A. Wheeler - who has written extensively on early city history - present an overview of Cleveland's rich heritage, with an emphasis on the period from 1930-1996.

The authors split the history into four parts, utilizing more than 50 illustrations, with an appendix that includes the city's population from 1830-1990, a listing of mayors and a section of additional readings for those interested in delving further into specific topics.

The book does a good job in briskly - and punctually - moving through the city's history like an old CTS rapid-transit train on a clear summer day.

4 out of 5 stars Great introductory overview of great overlooked city.......2000-06-20

Good historical overview of Cleveland supplemented by photographs. Cut and dried, scholarly approach. Recommended as a starting point for historical research into what shaped the city.

    Book Description

Named for King Louis XVI of France in appreciation for his assistance during the Revolutionary War, Louisville was founded by George Rogers Clark in 1778. While its initial growth was slow, the advent of the steamboat in the early 1800s sparked booming industrial development, and by 1830 Louisville had secured its place as the largest city in Kentucky.

During the Civil War, Louisville was an important Union base of operations and a major military supply center. In the postwar era, the city emerged even more prosperous than before, with merchant princes and manufacturers shaping the new economy. Owing to its strategic location at the Falls of the Ohio, Louisville was a major commercial center. River transportation was supplemented by the construction of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, which was chartered in 1850 and operated more than 1,800 miles of line in the state by 1920. Joseph E. Seagram and Sons opened the world's largest distillery in Louisville following the repeal of prohibition. Thanks to companies such as Dupont, the city became the world's largest producer of synthetic rubber during World War II.

Louisville was also a city of firsts. In the reform-minded progressive era of the 1880s, the city was the first in the nation to introduce the secret ballot, significantly reducing vote fraud. It was the first city in Kentucky to adopt zoning and planning measures to control and shape urban growth. Home of the first bridge designed exclusively for motor vehicles to cross the Ohio River, Louisville was also the birthplace of Mary Millicent Miller, the first woman in the United States to receive a steamboat master's license.

The city has been home to a number of men and women who changed the face of American history. President Zachary Taylor was reared in surrounding Jefferson County, and two U.S. Supreme Court Justices, including Louis D. Brandeis, the first Jewish Justice, were from the city proper. John James Audubon was a local shopkeeper in the early years of his career, drawing birds in his spare time. Second Lt. F. Scott Fitzgerald, stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor during World War I, was a frequent presence at the bar in the famous Seelbach Hotel, immortalized in the novel The Great Gatsby. Muhammad Ali, perhaps the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, was born in Louisville and won six Golden Gloves tournaments in Kentucky.

For more than 125 years, the world's attention has turned to Louisville for the annual running of the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. Louisville Slugger bats still reign supreme in major league baseball. The city was also the birthplace of the famed Hot Brown and Benedictine spread, and the cheeseburger made its debut at Kaelin's Restaurant on Newburg Road in 1934. The song “Happy Birthday to You” had its origins in the Louisville kindergarten class of sisters Mildred Jane Hill and Patty Smith Hill.

With more than 1,800 entries ranging from Helen Abell (historic preservationist) to Sebastian Zorn (twice president of the Louisville Water Co.), The Encyclopedia of Louisville is the ultimate reference for Kentucky's first city.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Every Louisvillian.......2001-02-16

While growing up in Louisville, I did not have any interest in my "little hick town". I dreamt of leaving for the big city. At 22 I left, for the west coast, eventually hitting the big cities of Dallas and Detroit, on my way back home. Now here, I find this the perfect place for raising my children. This book completes my journey, and brings me home. This is the most interesting book I have ready in years!

5 out of 5 stars The World According to Louisville.......2000-12-29

This wonderful volume covers people, places, events and things in the Louisville metropolitan area from a historical and cultural perspective in encyclopedia style entries written by Louivillians. As a native Louivillian I am finding it a delight to browse thru the entries learning delightful details about my birthplace and its history. It takes many more universal topics and relates how they have impacted the city and its people. A must for Louisvillians that want to learn more about our rich history and cultural legacy.
