Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners and not for professionals.......2007-05-03
It is hard to tell who this book is geared towards. A novice should not take on any event that is as over their head; as most of the event situations that are listed in the book are. A professional would know from experience the answers to most of the questions or they would have the common sense to take care of any odd situation that arose. The book may be helpful to assistant managers or banquet captains, but most houses have their own way of doing things. Interesting read and a good refresher, buy used.
Very useful Hand Book.......2007-03-10
It was very useful to me as I used it to brak into the wedding/event business. It presents a very corporate approach, yet it seems to uncover all kinds of secrets of the event world that are hidden to the public eye.
This Book is Alright.......2006-08-09
Being an avid reader of Event Planning literature, I must say that this book is alright.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2005-10-14
Details, details, details. That's really what successful event planning is all about, and that's the key to this very successful event-planning manual. Author Judy Allen notes, lists, copes with and gives an example of virtually every detail in planning anything from a sedate corporate event in a major city to a huge celebration on a remote island. She provides examples galore plus tips, questions and answers, sample cost sheets and schedules. How much floor space does a person need to be comfortable in a tent? Answer: 20 square feet. How many bathrooms should be available for a party? Answer: One per 75 guests. And don't forget to ask about the stemware, adequate parking and even the photographer's back-up camera battery. This author seems to have thought every contingency, as the book's ambitious title promises. Her one glaring omission is that she does not include the party planner's fee - our guess is that she'd be worth it. We highly recommend this well-organized, very practical book to all event planners. Don't send out press releases for your party without consulting Judy Allen.
Great book.......2005-10-01
This is a great book for anyone interested in working in the event planning field.

Inspiring Photos & Ideas.......2007-01-09
I love this book! If you're planning your wedding and your vision is both tasteful, stylish, & classy - I highly recommend this book! I've had it for a few months now and my wedding is still 6 months away - I refer back to the book for additional ideas! Additionally, the photos are beautiful!
In Style: Weddings.......2006-11-04
If you are planning a wedding, this is a great resource. It is full of ideas covering off so many different areas, including rings, ceremonies, cakes, flowers etc. The gorgeous presentation makes it an item to keep forever.
The One Stop Shop Book.......2006-07-08
I loved the Instyle Weddings Edition. It was very thorough and nice hard cover quality. I would definately recommend this to all bride and grooms to be!
Wow! What a book!.......2006-04-24
I saw this book in Amazon together with Martha Stewart's Wedding Book and since I admire Style's Wedding magazine, I decided to purchase this book. What a great find! It has ideas on every aspect of the wedding. Lots of very cool ideas. I particularly like the ideas for photos and beauty. Definitely worth it.
Beautiful Book for Budding Bridezillas.......2006-01-25
If you are planning a monster wedding (you know who you are, Bridezilla) this is the manual of choice. "In Style: Weddings" uses their format of large, beautiful photographs and snappy sections on everything from what the best man does in the wedding to how to do your makeup for the big day.
The sections are lavishly photographed. The cake chapter has pictures of fondant-iced fantasy cakes--but it also has an idea for a tower-of-cupcakes that might suit a budget affair (more on this later.)
In Style doesn't fail to include a lot of dishing about what this and that celebrity did for their wedding, which will add to any bride-to-be's dreaming about her big day. There are sections on hair, with very pretty ideas for how to make an up-do with ornaments. A section on makeup and one IMPORTANT section on dress selection. Hint: tall and big brides should stay away from those Cinderella ballgowns with the huge chiffon skirts, lest they look like a battleship being launched. Likewise, it was rather enlightening about how many celebrities these days choose to be married in what to me looks like their slip or nightie. There are hints as well for the dresses of the attendants. And a nice selection of items that could be used as wedding favors and groom's gifts.
There was less devoted to menus than I'd like to see, but plenty on the types of venues (outdoors and indoors.) There were lists for planning. And a wonderful section on flowers with photos that would make anyone drool.
While I give this book a top five star rating, I'd like to point out to the star-struck bride that weddings these days average about twenty-seven THOUSAND dollars. That's a lotta scratch, my matrimonially-inclined readers. Consider than this amount, invested and earning a modest six percent would double in about twelve years. So consider that perhaps the ideal wedding might be a pigroast under a tent with a local bluegrass band. Costing a lot less than the average. Think about how much a big wedding is worth to you before you get in over your head.

Save your money!.......2007-09-07
You barely have to read a page or two into the except here to see that you will not get the best advice here. What kind of advice does it give for emphasizing the waist? Low slung pants, cropped tops, and belly piercings. SERIOUSLY? That's about the worst fashion advice I've ever heard. Maybe that's ok for sassy little 15 year olds, but it is the farthest thing from classy, and not usually appropriate or flattering! Honestly, the advice in this book, save for a few words of wisdom from some bona fide experts, is at best fluff, and at worst just plain bad.
Alot of Fluff, not much Stuff........2007-04-16
I agree with the person that said this was the equivalent of a bunch of magazine tidbits. There is ALOT of nothing in here... things that I could've gathered on my own. It was quite disappointing on so many levels. Barely entertaining bathroom reading?! Yes, but not for the price and hype. Here are some low-lights in this first half of the book.
How to be stylish: "remember a good pair of shoes can make any outfit. Likewise, a bad pair can do irrevocable damage." (Okay, so what's a good pair and a bad pair?)
Half a page on how to stick to a gym membership summed up: Tell everyone. Ideally go with a friend. Know what will scare you into action. (DUH.)
How to swim in shades (summarized): wrap a rubber band around each arm of the shades. Then make an inconspicuous ponytail with a small strand of hair to keep the shades in place. (Sounds like a breeze.)
Hair: Dry shampoo is perfect for reviving bands. (Proceeds to offer how to for teasing hair into a big bouffant, no pictures included. At least in magazines there are pictures.)
Tips for the salon: dress to impress, giving the stylist some inspiration. Be prepared (ie-bring a book for the down time.) Do not opt for a style that you cant re-create (Duh.) Know the style that suits your face (DUH) and get your punchline out before the dryer is on (as you and your stylist cant hear as well when the dryer is on).
How to deal with bad hair days: wear a hat. (This takes up two pages. Two additional pages on "how to wear a hat".)
Some of the biggest disappoints:
How to deal with unpleasant situations covers how to avoid the flu "keep your hands clean... eat fruits and vegetables..."; how to apply adhesive bandages, how to be stylish in a sling; how to use toilets at concert venues; how to pick up dog doo with style...
How to survive an occasion "weddings, funerals & birthdays". (The book skimps on the most important aspect... gifts!) "If they have a wedding list, go for it. If all you can afford is a sugar-bowl lid, so be it." (Did I need a book for this?!)
How to dance: "Invest in VH1 and MTV- watch the videos and learn". (If it were all that easy, we'd all be dancing like Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, no?!) Precedes to outline the moves to the tango with no foot charts or pictures.
How to grill bacon, sausage, and tomato: Generously piece and put under grill, and flip when they look done.
How to get a mortgage: all you need to do is go to Google, type in "mortage broker," et voila. (sounds fail proof to me, seeing as there are very few internet scams out there nowadays)
The Title Says It All..........2007-01-20
It really is a handbook to everything! From how to date, dress, live, and face the world! This guide includes articles ranging from purchasing a home, picking out the perfect shoe, and using a computer. The sections include: Greeting your Public, Being Socially Adept, Tackling Your Technophobia, Homes and Gardens, and Joining the Jet Set.
Every Girl Should Own This Book........2007-01-04
Great ideas and ways to handle situations for every girl, women, lady. It is beautifully crafted so looks remarkable on your nightstand. Enjoy!
Are you kidding me?!!.......2006-12-31
I got this book as a Christmas present and still am not sure if the person who gave it to me fell for the other idiotic recommendations or was intentionally being rude. I like to think of myself as a self-assured adult lady and having been raised properly in the great State of Texas, I believe I was brought up with enough manners to know that passing this book (or anything similar to it) to anyone else would be an insult! Certainly by the time a woman reaches maturity she should have acquired enough knowledge to know who to apply an adhesive bandage and how to eat with a knife, fork and spoon. (I kid you not, this author actually thinks women have to read a book to learn these things which should give you a lot of insight into her abilities.) I kept looking for some inkling that this was written tongue-in-cheek but could not find any. Please do not waste your money on it - unless, of course, you intend to insult someone with it and then, best of luck to you. One word - DUCK!
Average customer rating:

Waste of money.......2007-08-30
I was expecting A LOT more from this book, especially with the title "anything and everything you could possibly say at the altar - and then some". There were very few examples, even fewer useable ones. Waste of money!!
There is a much better book available called The Wedding Ceremony Planner by Reverend Judith Johnson. It has hundreds of suggestions throughout for the different parts of the ceremony. It was much more helpful!
It is just what it says "Vows".......2007-08-27
I did like this book. It gives step by step how the wedding ceremony is planned out. Greeting, Declaration of Consent,Charge to the convocation, Address, Readings, Vows, Ring Exchange, Pronouncement. However just as the title says it only gives vows. If you are looking for a book that offers more about each part of the wedding this is not for you. If you are looking just for the "Vow Portion" of the ceremony you won't be dissapointed.
Plain Jane, Tear Jerkers and OMGOSH do they really say that???.......2007-05-12
Ok, I have read it ALL now! I mean, really, I understand writing your own vows (my hubby and I did) but come on! Most of the ideas in the book are rock solid and it is arranged in a way to help even the most timid bride and groom find a comfortable fit. The new twist is the ideas for the, umm, shall we say, far left among us who need to express themselves in TRULY unique ways at their wedding ceremony.
Yes, it is great for organizing, planning and laying out a service. It is full of ideas and resources to help make your (hopefully One)Big Special day truly unique. I would recommend it.
Okay book but not super helpful.......2007-03-17
This book was not as helpful as I thought it would be. I was looking for nice quotes about love that I could use on my wedding day. This book has a large section of quotes but none of them were all that great. The book gives advice on how to write your own vows but not enough examples. Not a terrible book but not as helpful as it could be.
A comprehensive guide to writing your own wedding vows........2006-07-20
This book offers a lot despite its size. There is plenty of advice on how to write your own wedding vows. The book gives you a lot to think about that helps you write your own personalised vows. This book contains many poems and thoughts so you can choose the words that express how you feel for your loved one.The book caters for everyone and it does so very sensibly without offending anyone. The book is one of the best books I've read and has so much to offer.I highly recommend it.For the price alone its a good value.Makes an ideal gift.If you dont want to buy several books you should consider this book.
Customer Reviews:
Less than entry-level book - too basic for anyone who already can use a phone.......2007-06-03
I was very dissapointed with this book - it features extremely basic information about customer service and phone skills. The books stresses that the phone should be answered quickly, politely and that the CSR should listen to the caller. They recommend taking complete messages, calling back promptly and trying to sound positive when saying "no".
I believe I learned all of that from my mom and dad when I was 8. It was not worth the $10.95, and I won't be buying any titles from this series or publisher again - it just isn't new or useful information.
Excellent communication skills tool!.......2004-07-27
I've been doing reception work for a long time and was recently promoted to because of my excellent phone and office skills. Not to brag, just to illustrate that I know something about customer service on the phone. I love reference material and I have purchased other books on the same subject. I read this book, nearly cover-to-cover (left out the sales calls chapter as it does not apply to me), and I found it interesting, informative, easy-to-read, and applicable to my work. Very useful tips on how to handle all kinds of situations. Written for anyone from the 20-year professional secretary/assistant to a total beginner. I would definitely choose this book over The Phone Book: Telephone Skills for Business Success Student Text by Fisher.
In short, professionally written, applicable to all kinds of situations, great for all levels of experience.
Customer service rescue me book.......2000-11-15
This book was absolutely what I have been looking for. It has assisted not only me, but the customers that I work with on a daily basis. Thanks for such great information and Rescue.

Customer Reviews:
It's okay..........2007-01-11
I bought two wedding planners and this is the one that I've been using the least. It does have really good sized pockets in the divider of each section. It has gorgeous pictures in it and as the wedding date draws closer (we still have nine months), it's quite possible I'll use this one more.
This book does have a business card holder and so far that's the part I've used the most.
Fast.......2007-01-09
I received this product very fast and my sister absolutely loves it. It was a great gift for her.
Just Awesome.......2006-10-03
This planner is WONDERFUL. I got married just a few months ago, so I know how hectic it can be. I ordered this as a gift for a co-worker and she loves it. This is great because it has big pockets to store papers and things, tons of pictures of flowers, cakes, reception ideas, etc. The flower directory is teriffic. This planner covers everything right down to the last detail. After planning my own wedding, I wish I had had this planner! The best you can get.
Very helpful information but..........2006-07-24
I was very pleased with all the helpful information this wedding planner has but was very disappointed when it fell apart two days after giving it to my son's fiance as a gift. I was very embarassed to say the least. We are not returning it because she has started writing a lot of information in it so she has put it in a three-ring binder. I just want to warn other buyers about this product. I'm sure there are other books that contain just as much information as this one but won't fall apart.
Seems like it will be helpful........2006-03-07
I bought this as an engagement present for my best friends and gave it to them the day after they got engaged. It has a great deal of content and even if they don't end up using the worksheets, it's still fun for them to look at. The book itself was a little beat up (some of the divider tabs were creased, some dents on the cover) so it might be better to buy it at a store where you can see the actual book and content first.

If you're planning a wedding, accept it now--there's a ton of details mucking up the happy path to the altar. There is so much on your mind that it's easy to freeze up and forget everything, or go crazy and paper the house with cryptic post-it notes. "After all," say authors Marcy Blum and Laura Fisher Kaiser, "a wedding is a complex affair to orchestrate, and keeping track of all those details, phone calls, expenses, and decisions is a job and a half." Organization is key.
Wedding Kit for Dummies breaks the whole planning process down for you with a series of questions, charts, and spreadsheets. Intended as a companion piece to Weddings for Dummies, this book does not help you word your invitations or tell you where your step-grandmother should be seated. Rather, it helps you knowledgeably talk with your stationer (How much extra are the vellum invites? Should the date be written out or numeric?) and helps you chart who will escort whom down the aisle and when.
Weddings can be ridiculously complicated, and almost everyone involved--especially the bride--is running on high. Wedding Kit for Dummies aims to lessen the stress with its comprehensive checklists, examples of contracts (for the caterer, hotel, flowers, DJ, etc.), and Excel spreadsheets (invitation list, RSVP list, budget tracker). Included is a CD-ROM that prints out hard copies of the lists and runs the spreadsheets (you'll need Windows 95 or later or Mac OS 7.5.5 or later to use the CD). And since so many couples plan on using the Internet, Wedding Kit for Dummies includes the Web addresses of many wedding-oriented sites. --Dana Van Nest

Disappointed.......2007-02-14
I ordered this book again, since the first one I purchased, the cd was broken. The seller, returned my money and told me to keep the book...but what I really wanted was the cd. So I ordered the book again. Now, I have the cd and it is only good for 30 days.
Almost requires the other book.......2006-02-25
I thought Wedding Kit For Dummies would be Weddings for Dummies plus the CD, it's not. It actually references stuff that's in the other book as if I'm going to buy both.
All in all it's not bad, it's just frustrating.
HONOST.......2005-09-12
The book I purchased was no in the condition which it stated and this seller was very honest about it. The seller gave me the option to have a full refund since the book did not come with the CD. I'd buy from this person again.
BUYER BEWARE.......2005-01-20
The CD doesn't include the software that it says it does. You have to hunt in the book to find the information that the software included is TRIAL versions only (you can get full versions for a "nominal" fee). It says it includes excel and excel documents which are simply NOT present on the CD. DO NOT BUY!
Don't waste your money.......2004-10-12
If you know how to read, you're too smart for this book. Marcy Blum's approach is 1) condescending and 2) geared toward a big-budget crowd. The CD-ROM is difficult to use and the anecdotes in the text are tired. I'd suggest buying another dozen roses and saving your money.
Book Description
Nothing is more thrilling and romantic than a beautiful wedding. Here, in a simply spectacular book, Martha Stewart takes us behind the scenes of some of the most lovely weddings ever. Over 40 weddings and receptions, from small, intimate celebrations for 18 to lavish parties for 400, are documented in more than 700 full-color photographs. The settings are as varied as an idyllic country farm in New Jersey, a gracious mansion on eastern Long Island, an elegant townhouse in New York City, a private island in New Hampshire, a ranch in Texas, and the oldest and most beautiful cathedral in Montreal. We see the choices the brides, grooms, and their families made and how they planned every detail of their special day.
All the essential elements of a wedding are discussed in depth in chapters filled with information and ideas: Style, Organization, Invitations, Wedding Dresses, Bridal Bouquets, Ceremony, Music, Decoration, and, of course, Wedding Menus and Cakes. More than 120 recipes are included for varied wedding receptions, from cocktails and hors d'oeuvres to buffets, sit-down lunches and dinners, and even barbecues. Twelve different recipes for traditional as well as nontraditional wedding cakes (including carrot, lemon, and even a cheesecake) are included along with step-by-step instructions for assembling and decorating them.
Weddings are back in style, and anyone who is getting married or is involved in some way with a wedding will want to read and use this wonderfully inspiring book.
Customer Reviews:
Dated like her picture on the cover - Avoid.......2004-06-18
I bought this at a garage sale for $2.00. Our neighbor's daughter was getting married but the book was not very good. The ideas are very dated. If you want to plan a 1970s style wedding and want to spend a lot of money for a picture of Martha when she was young and not grossly overweight than this is your book.
Martha Stewart Weddings.......2003-11-20
I was very disappointed with this particular book. I was looking forward to a book with many wedding ideas, however, this book is less of ideas and more on weddings meanings and tradition. The ideas it does share are very out-of-date.
French readers will love it........2000-05-05
Gaby deLourdes-Renoir reviews(a Top-10 Amazon.com reviewer) made us love Martha Steward books. "Wedding" is full of extraordinary pictures. You just dream you were there! Will your daughter ever know such beautiful moments? Martha Steward helps you to think "yes" as an answer. Just because she explains you how to cut into small pieces a huge "wedding-cake" (the wedding party you will have to organize). Chapters are divided into specific subjects that can easily be handled by one specific responsible in your family. In the "lightning" chapter, you will discover through artistic (and useful) pictures how to create a cheap impressive range of lights in the garden with yellow paper bags and ordinary candles. All chapters include bright ideas for beautiful people (like you and me...). I love books that make me feel "I can do it". Especially when they show me beautiful people a a help in the identification process.
Ideas for every budget !.......1999-05-29
I always manage to find some idea in all of Martha Stewart's books that I can make my own. I have used the wedding books to make both anniversary and wedding cakes and find the instructions to be detailed and easy to follow. Everyone raves about my chocolate cake with chocolate curls, both taken from the instructions for the groom's cake. My son is getting married soon and we have kept the wedding costs for below $3000.00, including the caterer, by using many of the ideas I have gotten from this book!
Overpriced, old book........1999-04-30
Martha has proven once again that her books are NOT for those who have a modest and realistic budget for their wedding. The price of her book is the indication. Don't bother spending $75 for her book full of old ideas, go out and window shop at your local bridal show. Looking for timeless ideas? You can look somewhere else for a lot cheaper price.

great ideas.......2007-08-25
Jo is a great person with wonderful ideas, now they are availble to us all. If your doing it yourself or just want some ideas, this is a elegant and crative place to start.
Creative, inspiring, modern..........2007-07-12
Jo Gartin's Weddings is a small book, compared to books by other event planners, such as Colin Cowie or Martha Stewart, but it packs a big punch in its pint size. She offers fresh, creative and inspiring ideas that, for the most part, are very do-able, and will add personal touches to every aspect of the wedding event. She shows several dresses she reworked, and how to do similar things yourself. There are clever ideas for flowers and centerpieces. My favorite part was how gracious her ideas are for welcoming guests, from personalized Seltzer bottles, to baskets with parasols, wired flowers for every guest, and fans doubling as programs. I am planning a destination wedding, and the amount of ideas for welcoming people are abundant. Highly recommended!
Easy, Simple, Stylish.......2007-07-06
As an event planner I am always searching for new and interesting ideas. Well, Jo Garton's book provides just that. Upon first glance her eyeys do see to be in the pricey area (she is a planner/designer to the stars), but her ideas and be scaled down to fit more modest budgets. I loved the pictures and descriptions and the fact she strayed from the path or other books. Great book!
Modern and unique .......2007-01-16
This book really helped in planning my wedding,it was fun and inspirational. There's alot of information on doing things more interesting and unique versus traditional. Out of all the books I acquired for my wedding planning this was by far my favorite.
Loved it!.......2007-01-15
This book had so many great ideas for making my wedding unique. They are simple and feasible to create, but be prepared to be crafty or have someone you know who is crafty help you.
