Weldon provides a compelling context, walks through the metrics that affect the price action, and assimilates the decision-making process in kind. From soup to nuts, this is one of the most comprehensive tutorials I've read on the subject of commodities."
—Todd Harrison, founder and CEO, Minyanville Publishing and Multimedia, LLC

"The gold price is rising in today's turbulent financial times. Preparation and knowledge are essential to profit from higher prices, and this book provides everything you need to take advantage of the trading opportunities thatlie ahead."
—James Turk, founder, GoldMoney.com

"This book, with its insights into the current investment climate coincides with what many feel is a new bull market in gold. There is no 'one-size-fits-all' investment approach, but every investor who applies such preparation and rigor as Greg outlines will certainly have increased returns with fewer losses. It should be on every investor's bookshelf, handy for reference, and re-read every year. Greg puts paid to the notion of random walk!"

Dissapointed that I did not undercover anything 'new' or earth shattering. It is a decent intro book but I did not learn anything special.

Gold Boot Camp is very well written and the author actually entertains you thorught w/ stories and analogies to make what is normally very boring material, very interesting. I'm ready to start trading I'm so inspired!!!!!!!!!!1

5 out of 5 stars Traders bonanza.......2007-04-17

This is one of the most useful trading books I've seen in a long long time.
As a broker and former Risk Manager in the financial markets, I am usually somewhat suspicious of books by "traders" and/or "pundits". I usually find myself confronted by lots of self-serving drivel and advice that is not in any way applicable to typical traders. This book is a refreshing change from that.
Every new or newer trader should read this book. The excellent charts and analysis contained on them are worth the book's price all by themselves. What I found of particular interest, though, was his honest and refreshing approach to the oft-neglected subject of Risk. Every trader should read this portion of the book.
The book lays out in intricate detail the process a true professional trader must go through to successfully speculate. Fascinating stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book.......2007-04-04

I am a beginner in gold investing, and found this book an eye-opener in understanding the markets. I need everything in simple terms, and this book was incredibly informative.

Greg Weldon is an eloquent writer, and I felt that I came away with more confidence to invest in this market.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-04-03

I highly recommend this book. Not only to Gold traders, but to anyone who follows the financial markets in general. As a subscriber to his thought-provoking newsletter, I believe Weldon has a style all his own that is reflected in this book. (Most of which in this industry make for good "night-time" reading!)

Weldon's book kept me engaged while also providing useful information and insights that can be applied to many different markets. He is very good at illustrating his points with charts and graphs (many of which are of his own creation) and has a unique way of correlating many different markets, indicators and statistics.

Very well written.

Book Description

A monumental, groundbreaking work of history that shows how technological and strategic revolutions have transformed the battlefield—from the Spanish Armada to the War on Terror— and how mastery of these innovations has shaped the rise and fall of nations and empires

In War Made New, acclaimed author Max Boot explores how innovations in warfare mark crucial turning points in modern history, influencing events well beyond the realm of combat. Combining gripping narrative history with wide-ranging analysis, Boot focuses on four “revolutions” in military affairs and describes key battles from each period to explain how inventions ranging from gunpowder to GPS-guided air-strikes have remade the field of battle— and shaped the rise and fall of empires.

Bringing to life battles from the defeat of the Spanish Armada to WellingtonÂ's victory at Assaye, War Made New analyzes the Gunpowder Revolution and explains warfareÂ's evolution from ritualistic, drawn-out engagements to much deadlier events, precipitating the rise of the modern nation state. He next explores the triumph of steel and steam during the Industrial Revolution, including the British triumph at Omdurman and the climax of the Russo-Japanese war at Tsushima, showing how it powered the spread of European colonial empires. Moving into the twentieth century and the Second Industrial Revolution, Boot examines three critical clashes of World War II—the German armyÂ's blitzkrieg, Pearl Harbor, and the firebombing of Tokyo—to illustrate how new technology such as the tank, radio, and airplane ushered in terrifying new forms of warfare that aided the rise of highly centralized, and even totalitarian, world powers. Finally, in his section on the Information Revolution, Boot focuses on the Gulf War, the invasion of Afghanistan, and the Iraq war, arguing that even as cutting-edge technologies such as stealth aircraft have made America the greatest military power in world history, advanced communications systems have allowed decentralized, “irregular” forces to become an increasingly significant threat to Western power. BACKCOVER: Advance Praise for War Made New
“Max Boot traces the impact of military revolutions on the course of politics and history over the past 500 years. In doing so, he shows that changes in military technology are limited not to warfighting alone, but play a decisive role in shaping our world. Sweeping and erudite, while entirely accessible to the lay reader, this work is key for anyone interested in where military revolutions have taken us—and where they might lead in the future.”
—U.S. Senator John McCain

“While much has been in written in recent years about the so-called Â`Revolution in Military Affairs,Â' Max Boot is the first scholar to place it within the broad sweep of history, and in the context of the rise of the West in world affairs since 1500. In so doing, he not only tells a remarkable tale, but he compels us all, even those obsessed solely with contemporary military affairs, to ask the right questions and to distinguish what is truly new and revolutionary from what is merely ephemeral. He has rendered a valuable service, and given us a fascinating read at the same time, so we are doubly in his debt.”
—Paul Kennedy, Professor of History at Yale University and author of The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers

“War Made New is impressive in scope. What is equally impressive is its unique interpretation of the causal relationship between technology, warfare and the contemporary social milieu. This is a superb thinking person's book which scrutinizes conventional historical wisdom through a new lens.”
—Lt. Gen. Bernard E. Trainor, USMC (ret.), co-author of Cobra II: The Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq

“Max Boot's book takes hundred of years of tactical battle history and reduces it to an incisive narrative of how war has changed. By providing such a coherent view of the past, he has pointed us toward the future. What is doubly impressive is how he draws surprising, fresh lessons from wars we thought we knew so much about but in fact didn't.”
—Robert D. Kaplan, author of Imperial Grunts

5 out of 5 stars Not just history, but analysis and insight.......2007-09-03

Max manages to well capture the balance between seeing the forest at the same time as the trees. Further, by extrapolation, he offers insight as to what the forest will look like in the future. I thought the book was excellent, and should be good reading for any military officer. I am a retired military officer, and have seen all the changes from the middle of the Cold War to Gulf War II. It's a completely different ball game, and Max covers it well. {To the detractors; all books have factual errors. Look to the forest, not the trees, or you miss the point of the book.)

Absolutely excellent. Completely objective presentation. Fabulous survey of how technological and tactical changes affected western history.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother With This Recycled NeoCon Drivel.......2007-05-08

[Update: If you are thinking about buying this book, PLEASE CONTACT ME!!!!

As a courtesy, I copied Boot on a letter to the LA Times that pointed out a series of factual errors and inconsistencies in a May 31, 2007 column he wrote about achieving "Victory" in Iraq by firing purportedly "aged" US Army Generals. (Boot's underlying premise is that there is nothing wrong with the NeoCon policies that put our troops in harm's way without enough personnel, equipment or support -- it's those "old fud" Generals who are to blame!

(I'm not making this up! That actually is Boot's theory.)

Boot responded like the Proverbial Scalded Cat, and in classic NeoCon style, e.g., claiming not to have made any mistakes; claiming that pointing out his glaring factual errors was an "ad hominem attack"; and generally displaying all of the NeoCon hubris that is getting US military personnel killed and wounded every day in Iraq.

It would be hysterically funny were it not for the fact that most people can't see through the tactics that Boot and the other NeoCons use -- including, most prominently, ignoring demonstrable facts that don't "fit" the ideological theories they are pushing.

Really, before you buy this drivel, email me and I'll send you a copy of Boot's emails. They will give you a taste of his "reasoning" and disregard for the truth.]

In my view, Max Boot is an example of the kind of NeoCon thinking that has gotten us into this generation's quamire. Boot is, basically, a liberal arts major with no military experience, and without the insights that such experience might bring.

In "War Made New," Boot "re-cycles" (a politer word than "steals") ideas have been around for years, and which have been expressed more clearly by a number of other military intellectuals and historians. Further, Boot repeatedly gets minor facts wrong, e.g., he claims that the WWII-era Supermarine Spitfire and the Hawker Hurricane were both "all-metal" fighters. (The Spitfire was; the Hurricane wasn't -- which is obvious even from pictures of the latter if you know what you are talking about.) These small discrepancies add up, and you ultimately realize that Boot is merely repeating the thoughts of others.

Boot's final/main contention, that there has been a major shift to "Information Warfare," is not borne out by the "facts on ground" in Iraq, and has never been tested in combat. The US military's new smart bomb/high technology theory of warfare has never been used against an opponent with the ability and resources to counter/exploit the obvious weak points in such systems.

To give but one example, which Boot doesn't have the knowledge or experience to discuss: Our JDAMS smart bombs work using GPS signals for guidance. Question: What happens if our opponent has the capability to jam GPS signals, or knock out the GPS satellites (a technology that China is working on)? Answer: The US is left with a pile of "dumb" bombs, and a force structure that is too small to use them. Result: We lose, despite all of our Gee Whiz weaponry.

Let's face it: NeoCons like Boot work for the military-industrial complex that sells these very expensive Wonder Weapons. He has about as much intellectual credibility as, say, Douglas Feith and Paul Wolfowitz. So save your money, and read authors who know what they are talking about.

Neil

[P.S. In candor, Boot pointed out that I originally had "Feith" as "Fife." I thanked him for pointing this error, but admitted that I had trouble telling the "NeoCon Intellectuals" apart, given that they all used the same "reasoning," e.g., "Cut The Facts To Fit The Theory."

Onward, to Victory! NEOCON INTELLECTUALS TO THE FRONT!]

5 out of 5 stars enjoyable, informatiive read.......2007-05-01

I must say, I found this book interesting. I am not a military expert, but I believe his basic premises are correct. This is a journey through the effects of technological advances in warfare and the corresponding effects on society. No section is so long that it becomes boring. I found the whole thing engrossing and hard to put down. I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars RMA for the masses.......2007-04-24

A decade ago, the defense policy community was a buzz about an emerging "Revolution in Military Affairs" (RMA) - a discontinuous change in the nature of warfare generated by the information revolution whose potential was so clearly demonstrated by the overwhelming advantage that precision guided munitions and operational awareness conferred to US forces in the Gulf War of 1991.

Today, the increasingly low-tech, irregular nature of the current Global War on Terror and, more recently, the frustrating experience of counterinsurgency in Iraq, have seemingly diminished the importance of the RMA and discredited its most vocal proponents. This is unfair and unfortunate as the notion of periodic, major transformational change in military technology and operational capabilities is certainly sound. Moreover, it is a concept that anyone serious about military history or international affairs ought to be familiar with and consider seriously. There is no better introduction to the topic than "War Made New: Technology, Warfare, and the Course of History, 1500 to Today" by Max Boot.

There are several reasons to recommend "War Made New." To begin with, author Max Boot is a superb talent and, in many ways, was the ideal person to write the first general overview of the RMA concept and a sampling of the many historical case studies that support the theory. As a long-time lead defense reporter for The Wall Street Journal, Boot possesses a sophisticated understanding of current defense policy and national security strategy. Better yet, he writes with the same engaging and lucid style of other defense journalists that have written best-selling full-length books, such as David Halberstam, Tom Ricks, and Neil Sheehan. Prior to "War Made New," the RMA had been a subject only written about by academics and policy wonks. This book should take the RMA and the classic RMA case studies to a mainstream audience.

The book is broken up into five parts. The first three parts review distinct RMAs from the past half-millennium. In "The Gunpowder Revolution" Boot covers the dramatic increase in the destructive capacity of gunpowder weapons that emerged in the late 15th century, the tactical changes developed by the Dutch and perfected by Gustavus Adolphus during the Thirty Years' War to maximize the rate of fire and overall impact of hand-held and mobile artillery firepower, and the parallel creation and stunning growth of standing professional armies throughout Europe during the period that led to the first stage of western imperialism in the 18th century. The author uses the examples of the British defeat of the Spanish Armada (1588), two major battles of the Thirty Years War (1631-32), and a less familiar episode in British India (1803) to illustrate how and why technological, doctrinal, and organizational change had profound impact not just on the course of a battle, but the outcome of war, the development of societies, and the fate of history.

The second part addresses "The First Industrial Revolution" where Boot covers engagements as diverse in time and place as the battles of Koniggratz in the Franco-Prussian War (1866), Omdurman in modern-day Sudan between the British and the native Mahdi Army (1898), and the shocking Japanese naval victory over the imperial Russian fleet at Tsushima (1905). The period between 1850 and 1914 is generally seen as the "railroad, rifle, and telegraph" RMA and Boot generally adheres to that thesis, although he stresses that the advantages conferred by early industrial technology were by no means the sole property of Western European states, a message that applies to any technological revolution that spawns an RMA.

The final historical part covers "The Second Industrial Revolution" and addresses the dramatic and non-linear changes that occurred during the interwar period in land warfare with the advent of armored warfare, at sea with the ascendancy of aircraft carriers as the new capital ship of fleet engagements, and in the air with advent of strategic bombing. The case studies that Boot writes here on the German invasion of France (1940), the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor (1941), and the US air campaign against Tokyo (1945) have long been the staple of modern RMA theory.

These first three parts account for nearly three-quarters of the book. Each case study is crisply written and makes a compelling point. That said, Boot offers no radical reinterpretations of what an RMA is or in anyway fundamentally challenges the conventional wisdom that developed amongst RMA proponents during the 1990s. Many of the case studies he provides have been written about extensively before and make essentially the same arguments. Boot's main value added is the fluidity of his prose and how he ties five centuries of history into one coherent and convincing argument.

The final two parts of the book covers the present and future. The fourth part addresses "The Information Revolution" and, unlike the first three Revolutions, is entirely focused on one nation - the US victory in the First Gulf War (1991), the US invasion of Afghanistan (2002), and the US invasion of Iraq (2003). Here, Boot focuses on the conventional aspects of each engagement where US firepower and advanced technology played a decisive role in defeating enemy forces. He concedes that much of the advantages of information age weaponry has little relevance to the messy, day-to-day conduct of counter-insurgency, but spends little time pondering if and how the information RMA has any relevance to current low intensity operations around the world.

The final part offers an overview of "Revolutions to Come" and highlights the military potential of cyberwarfare, nanotechnology, robotics, and the military use of space. This section reads like grist for a science fiction book and should prompt analysts to reflect on how future technology may impact the conduct of military operations decades from now.

Despite the broad historical and technological sweep of Boot's case studies, he consistently stresses five points. First, despite the focus on technology in the subtitle and the role new technology plays in every chapter, Boot stresses that technology alone does not and cannot make an RMA. True discontinuous change is driven by the combination of new technology with new tactics and organization, thoughtful leadership, and perhaps most importantly, an efficient and effective centralized bureaucracy able to nurture and promote innovation. Second, Boot cautions that nations ignore RMAs at their peril. Every major city-state or nation-state that failed to embrace and support new military technology, doctrine, and methods have seen their relative position in the international balance of powers significantly diminished. Third, mastery of an RMA may convey distinct battlefield advantages, but ultimate victory or defeat hinges on wise political decisions and diplomacy. Fourth, the military advantages to a nation in excelling in an RMA are enormous, but history has demonstrated that it is very difficult to maintain a lead for long. Competent and resourceful competitors will learn and adapt, and are quite likely to take fuller advantage of more recent developments in technology and operations. Finally, Boot notes that the pace of innovation is speeding up. In the past, an RMA could take several centuries to completely unfold. Today, it is likely to happen in several decades.

In sum, military transformation and the RMA is a concept informed readers of history and current events ought to be well acquainted with. There are certainly many divergent, but credible and thoughtful opinions on the matter. "War Made New" is no doubt sympathetic to the RMA argument and clearly sees former secretary of defense Rumfeld's military transformation push as the correct and necessary path for present-day policymakers to pursue. Whether today's intelligence analysts and operators accept all, part, or none of the RMA concept is not nearly as important as more fully understanding the theory, the many historical examples that purport to support it, and how and why it may impact contemporary or future military operations. There is no better place to start than Max Boot's "War Made New."

5 out of 5 stars neat ideas!!.......2007-05-14

This book has things I wouldn't normally think of to get kids interested in gardening and outdoors. My husband used the idea of a sunflower fort and planted sunflowers in a big circle next to our garden. The kids can hardly wait for their secret fort to come up so they can play inside. Our oldest (8) sits around reading it to her little brother so they can pick out their next project. :o)

5 out of 5 stars WOW!! Lets start gardening!!! .......2007-02-26

I bought both books. Roots,Shoots,Buckets & Boots, and Sunflower Houses. They are not the same! There are a couple of similar items, but both worth having and different. Sunflower houses shows how to make leaf hats and flower crowns, screechers, boats, pansy dolls, and much much more. The first book (roots, shoots,..) shows more creative gardening and hideouts and things like pizza patches sunflower hideouts and flower mazes. They both teach how to make hollyhock dolls. I recommend both. But if you only want one, get the roots, shoots, buckets and boots. However dont pass up the chance later on to get Sunflower Houses. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Light hearted drawings and magical ideas.......2006-11-30

With lyrical watercolors this lively text explains how to create 12 child-friendly theme gardens, including both a moon garden and a pizza garden. I simply had to buy this book, because even though I'm not gardening with children, I enjoy dreaming up and planting fun theme gardens.
I included this book in my article "25 Best Books For Hobby Farmers", in the November/December 2006 issue of Hobby Farms magazine.

5 out of 5 stars good book, and a warning for parents of small children.......2006-10-26

This book is excellent. The idea is wonderful, the illustrations are beautiful; it makes a great gift; it's very inspiring. My three small boys were very excited about helping in the garden this year, and we paged through the book many times, trying to decide which project to start with.

However, I was shocked to discover that Moonflowers (recommended for the Moon Garden) are not as child-friendly as I assumed! I started some Moonflower vines from seed which didn't do as well once I transplanted them. It came up in conversation and I was told of a relative who almost died from eating something from this plant; recently there was a report on the news of college-age kids who were "pre-comatose" from eating the pods. Of course, you should always keep an eye on kids, and teach them not to eat anything in the garden without permission. But if you have small children, you know something is bound to go in their mouths that shouldn't, at some point. Many plants have poisonous parts, including tomato plants and foxgloves. If you have small children, be sure you know what you planted!!

Overall, I LOVE this book and look forward to trying more of the ideas in it, next spring.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of creative ideas!!!.......2006-08-27

I love this book!! There are so many creative ideas to get kids involved in gardening!!! I can't wait to try them!!

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my entire opinion about Linux.......2007-09-18

I wish I'd bought this book first - it would have saved me a lot of frustration (and $$) in trying to find a Linux distro (version) that would actually work on my evidently odd combination of hardware.

Thanks to the DVD and CD that come with this book, I was able to find 3 different Linux distros that work just fine on my computer (I'm using one of them right now, in fact). I'd say the best part of this book, at least for me, is definitely the included DVD and CD - especially since I'm on dialup and it's not practical to try to download a bunch of different versions of Linux, to find which ones are compatible with my hardware. The DVD and CD itself is worth 5 stars, in my opinion.

Before buying this book, I'd previously bought a *different* book, whose DVD featured only one version of Linux that everyone raves about (it's supposedly user-friendly and all that), but that other book and Linux version was a total waste of my money because that particular Linux distro had too many major incompatibilities with my hardware, and I was unable to make it work. I spent a good solid week doing web searches trying to find workarounds to make it work (using my other computer to do online research, since I couldn't even get that far with Linux), but it was hopeless. I figured that if one of the most popular and most raved-about Linux versions couldn't be made to work, then what chance would I (as a total newbie) have with other versions?

It was at that point that I gave up on Linux for several months, concluding that Linux was over-rated and worthless. But I was not happy about that.

But, after a while, I decided I couldn't just let it drop like that - I wanted to try some different versions/distros, to give it another try. So I bought a different version/distro of Linux, on DVD, but that one had an entirely different set of problems and it was useless too. More money down the drain.

But, my "last chance" to make something of Linux, then I ended up buying *this* book, which turned out to be a good idea, because as I said, this book's DVD and CD has enough different versions/distros of Linux included with it, that it greatly increases your chances of finding one that will actually work for you. If I'd bought this book *first* I could have saved myself all that aggravation.

So, thanks to this book, I went from being a Linux newbie that couldn't make Linux do anything at all, to finding a distro that I'm actually comfortable with, that works great for me.

I agree with what others have written, that the book itself may not exactly be up to "Bible" standards and once you find a distro that works for you, you may want to supplement the book with some additional material. But it got me started with Linux, which other books and materials were unable to do.

2 out of 5 stars Not so good for the beginner.......2007-09-08

If you are new to linux, and want to learn the details and be a good linux user, this book is not for you, instead: buy a detailed book about the distro you are using (or want to give a try), and buy 'practical guide to linux..' - by Mark Sobell. That will help. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-05-15

The book is an excellent overview of Linux. I highly recommend the Linux Bible to get an idea of what is available in linux and to chose a distro. However, and this is not a flaw in the book, to become more that a windozer, one must read at least, Garrell's, "Introduction to Linux", available online as opensource. Without proper maintenance linux will soon be clogged, useless and hacked, but at least it will still be free!!

The CD/DVD combination available with the book, is very helpful and quite a time saver.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Discussions on the Distributions and Getting Started.......2007-05-15

Knowing that I need to spend some time learning about Linux I went looking for a book that would be a general introduction to help me get started. This book attracted my attention because it has an individual chapter talking about the special features about the distributions that are included with the book. I don't know how many distributions there are - over a thousand, I think - and had no idea about the best one for me to pick. After reading the book I'm going to try Ubuntu.

This is an excellent book on getting started, but as a Linux Bible, I think the book is mis-named. It's strength is talking about the distributions and the fairly general things you can do with Linux. It's a bit weak in the details of how to do things. As such, it's a great book to use when you are getting started. Then you will want more books to talk about the individual software packages that you'll be using. For instance he talks about PHP, he tells you how to get it running but once you start you'll want a programming book on PHP.

3 out of 5 stars When you want a CD and DVD.......2007-05-07

I'm new to Linux. I've been using it for three months. I was looking for a fairly inclusive book so I could learn more. I didn't find this book terribly helpful to me though. Mostly I used the discs that came with the book to try out the distributions contained. So, on to the book ...
The first 1/3 of the book deals with the "shell" - Choosing a shell (fairly esoteric for somebody like me), and running commands from the shell. Unfortunately, the book never gives any comprehensive list of commands in one place (this would have been quite helpful). The commands it does give are scattered throughout the section. Also covered are basic administration, securing Linux, running a firewall/router, getting into the desktop and getting on the internet. Most of it except "Getting into the Desktop" seems geared more toward system administrators than standard desktop users. As written, I doubt I'll ever use the first third of this book even as reference material.
Approximately the next 1/3 of the book deals with choosing and installing a Linux distribution. It covers the distros that come with the CD and DVD included with the book - a total of 12 distros - excluding alternate installs and 4 specialty programs such as Coyote Linux (floppy firewall), INSERT (I don't know what this is and I don't see it in the index or contents), BackTrack and System Rescue CD. (This leads me to the fact that the index left a lot to be desired.) This being said, this third of the book was a good and helpful companion to the discs.
The next part of the book deals a bit with running bootable distributions but mainly with running applications such as word processing, Internet browsers, e-mail, playing music and videos, image editing and gaming. I can't comment on this - I merely glanced through it. I tend to figure this stuff out myself. I'm sure it would be helpful to many people though.
The rest of the book (about a quarter of the book) deals with running Linux servers and programming. I'm not running e-mail, print or file servers and so had no interest in Apache, LAMP, SQL etc... but I'm sure there was some good information there.
If you want a book that comes with a dozen distros and is a rather helpful companion to the installation and basics those distros, this is the book for you. But overall, for my purposes, I'd give it an average rating.

Book Description

As anyone who has undergone the transition from civilian to soldier will tell you, basic training is a lot tougher and more challenging than any recruit can imagine. Michael Volkin discovered that fact soon after 9-11, when his personal vow to serve my country convinced him to enlist in the U.S. Army.

As Volkin quickly discovered, he was utterly unprepared for the new world of the military, "a completely different environment full of unknown exercises and acronyms, where can't eat or talk without permission. Volkin began taking notes on everything and anything with the hope that no one else would have to go through basic training like I did completely unarmed with knowledge that would have eased my transition into the military and allowed me to be more successful.

During Operation Enduring/Iraqi Freedom, Volkin organized his notes, interviewed hundreds of other soldiers, and began to write. The result is The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook, a unique and utterly indispensable guide to successfully coping with and thriving in today's military.

The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook is a comprehensive, practical, and easy-to-follow survival guide written specifically for every new or prospective recruit about to enter any branch of the armed forces. Volkin's book offers step-by-step instructions and solutions, including helpful charts and graphics, for how to prepare both physically and mentally for boot camp. It includes a special eight-week fitness program specifically designed to improve your fitness test scores, specific study guides, an instructional How to"chapter, a list of what to bring (and not to bring) to basic training, tips for success, and much more.

The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook was written by a soldier for men and women who want to become soldiers. No one should enter boot camp without having read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Not army boot camp anymore..........2007-09-07

This book has been super helpful in preparing my husband for boot camp- physically and mentally. The only problem is that we've learned that after the publishing of this book a lot changed in army boot camp. At first my husband was interested in joining the national guard, but in order to go to a boot camp like what is described in this book, he has to choose a different branch of military.

5 out of 5 stars amazing..........2007-02-19

This book was packed with info that will benefit anyone interested in going into the militry. My hubby went through boot camp a few years ago and said that all of the info would have made life a little easier then...lol.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2007-01-17

This book has helped me in so many ways. I knew nothing about the military before I left for boot camp. Now, I feel I am completely ready. The book has an easy to understand fitness routine and told me what to expect mentally from a drill sergeant, even the other recruits. This book even contains a packing list so I know exactly what to pack for boot camp.
Before I was scared to leave for basic, now I cant wait.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Book For Ultra-Noob.......2007-01-17

First off, there are many inaccuracies in this book which is odd considering it was written by a SGT (sergeant). The book is not as good as it could be but it's better than any other book on the military out there - as far as getting through basic training.

Overall, it's a helpful book because it will familiarize you with the Army and basic training. The Army is changing quick so some of the info is not relevant.

I'm a veteran of the Army and I think it could be beneficial. I'd recommend talking to recent basic training graduates and ask your recruiter lots of questions. There's also great info on the Army recruiting websites now.

5 out of 5 stars Where Was This Book in 1965? .......2006-09-15

I always felt that my basic training experience back in 1965 would have been much better had I known something about what I was going to endure. Now, modern day Army recruits have at their finger tips, "The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook" for surviving "boot camp"; and this is no exaggeration! Author Sgt. Michael Volkin has done a very creditable job of capturing all the needed information to survive basic training.

He gives you insights and how and why things happen and what you can do ahead of time to prepare yourself for that experience. I guarantee that if you follow his advice as outlined in his book that basic training will be much easier physically and emotionally for you. The keys from his many words of wisdom are to be prepared and to expect the unexpected.

This book is an absolute must for new basic trainees. It can make all the difference between failing mentally or physically and successfully enduring the training. Good photos illustrate physical exercises that will prepare you for the physical needs of basic. The guidebook also gives a good overview of what you should expect to happen from the time you arrive at your basic training facility and reception to graduation week. It takes you step by step through the whole program of training. More importantly, he gives the recruit some good personal advice on how to keep a low profile and stay out of trouble with your "Drill Instructors".

For those of us "old school" Army veterans from Nam or before --it is interesting to note that your DI can no longer physically hit you and kick you or punch you. Gone are the good old days of brutal and unrestrained Army training; but it still doesn't mean that it is any easier to complete. There are those physical elements of running and push-ups and sit-ups that will always continue to challenge new recruits.

Sgt. Volkin has broken his book into logical chapters that are both easy to read and understand. If you are going into the Army you will find this book even more helpful if you get your hands on a copy and read it prior to reporting. It will give you an edge over others. Your confidence will also be enhanced because you will actually be ahead of the game and will know more than the average recruit.

4 out of 5 stars Baking Boot Camp.......2007-09-19

Having just finished a week coarse in Hyde Park at Culinary Boot Camp, I wondered if I would want to go back for the baking boot camp. After reading Darra Goldstein's account, I am ready. The first experience was wonderful and I am looking forward to going next April to further my culinary skills.

1 out of 5 stars Why no Weights?.......2007-04-23

I found the book extremely helpful and am very grateful for the sharing of professional tips and techniques. The author takes great pains to tell us that all the chefs she encountered at the CIA emphasised how important it is to measure all ingredients by weight rather than volume (cups). Then, what do we find, but the recipes are all in cups with no weights offered! How will the cooking/baking culture ever change if even this book does not practice what it preaches?

4 out of 5 stars Revisiting.......2007-03-19

As I attended one of the boot camps, it was fun to read and review the week as we all experienced it. It is a very good description of the experience, in case anyone wants to read what's it like before deciding to go.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Taste of Baking Skills and Discipline. Buy It!.......2007-02-21

`baking Boot Camp' by The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and Darra Goldstein is a sequel to the delightful `culinary Boot Camp' by the same CIA and Martha Rose Shulman. Both writers are Julia Child awards winning cookbook writers, with Goldstein's speciality being ethnic Russian cuisine cookbooks and as an editor for a Russian cultural magazine in English. Both books chronicle the experiences of the authors' taking a 5-day CIA continuing education course. One major difference is that while the earlier book covers a single course, Goldstein's book covers two five day courses, one for baking and one for pastry, in spite of the suggestion on the book's subtitle that it covers only a single 5 day course.

Like the earlier book, this is a fine meld of reference cookbook and culinary memoir, almost as if one took a Nick Malgieri cookbook and shuffled it together, page by page, with the Michael Ruhlman documentary work, `The Making of a Chef', with the difference that Ms. Goldstein is a far less detached observer than journalist Ruhlman.

As I said in my review of the earlier book, anyone who is seriously considering baking as a career or even as a serious hobby should read this book from cover to cover. This is not so much for the baking advice, which is very good, but maybe not as good as the very best manuals on the subject. It is to familiarize one with the disciplines of baking, as exemplified by the regimens enforced by the CIA. It is not for nothing that these courses are called `boot camps'. While the instructors are not really as strict as they are with their associate degree and bachelor's degree students, they still impose a healthy discipline, starting with the legendary CIA emphasis on both being on time and the proper uniform, including the classic white blouse, houndstooth trousers (generally too big), white kerchief, and paper toque. And heaven help you if your hair falls out of the toque or the kerchief would not meet the approval of Auguste Escoffier.

Like very few other `cookbooks' I can think of, this volume is really meant to be read from start to finish, or at least up to the end of Chapter 10, the end of the 10 days of the two boot camps. The first ten chapters are divided into three types of sections. The first is a diary of Ms. Goldstein's experiences outside the classroom, involving finding a parking space early in the morning, breakfast, lunch, and breaks in the many CIA restaurants and dining rooms, and chatting with fellow students. The second type of section is narratives of lectures and baking experiences. These sections are by far the most interesting, as they contain lots of incidental tips on how things are done which you may not find in the usual text or recipe. The third section type is double page sidebars with text and pictures describing particular techniques.

While these classes are done for non-degree students, the recipes and techniques still come from the professional baking kitchen, using large commercial equipment, such as the 20 quart Hobart mixer (big brother to the 5 or 6 quart Kitchen-Aid) and recipes which are distinctly different from even the very best home baking. One example is the recipe for buttermilk biscuits. Even the best baking writers such as Nick Malgieri keep this very simple, following classic techniques of quick mixing and cutting. The CIA goes in for a more involved multiple dough folding technique, using some of the same principles used to make puff pastry (and yes, the book even includes a complete puff pastry recipe).

Two of my more interesting discoveries were that the expert bread baking instructor did not like and warned against the new `rapid rise' yeasts and that making creams such as crème anglaise, pastry cream, and other custards and meringues were virtually as important to the pastry profession as making doughs (pastry!).

This volume, like its earlier effort, is nicely illustrated, but not as expertly as I may have wished. The photographers seemed to turn blurry pictures into some kind of virtue, hopefully expressing the pace of the professional kitchen. It left me annoyed, especially when these pictures of `ambient activity' were presented with no captions. I also regretted not seeing the class picture, even though Ms. Goldstein was not happy with her appearance therein. On the other hand, the pictures of techniques and materials were expertly clear and reasonably well labeled, although they could have done a tad better than the `Clockwise, starting from the top, when the items are not close to a perfect clockfaced circle'.

Small annoyances aside, for the price, both volumes are superb introductions to the skills and disciplines of these culinary specialities.

Both are a `must buy' for foodies and aspiring cooks.

Whether fought for commercial or strategic concessions or even moral reasons, whether little-known or well-publicized, America's "small wars"--against, say, the Barbary pirates and the rebellious Boxers--played a large part in the development of what historian Max Boot does not hesitate to call an American empire. All arguments to the contrary, Boot insists, America has never been an isolationist power; it has "been involved in other countries' internal affairs since at least 1805," when American marines landed on the shores of Tripoli, and it has "never confined the use of force to those situations that meet the narrow definition of American interests preferred by realpolitikers and isolationists." Closely examining the record of those small wars, which far outnumber major conflicts, Boot argues that Americans have a historic duty to deliver foreign nations from aggression, even to intervene in civil wars abroad, especially if the product is greater freedom--for, he writes, "a world of liberal democracies would be a world much more amenable to American interests than any conceivable alternative." Readers may take issue with some of Boot's conclusions, but they merit wide discussion, especially in a time when small--and perhaps large--wars are looming. Boot's book is thus timely, and most instructive. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Reviewed and debated everywhere, this book has become a key volume in the case for a new policy of interventionism.

America's "small wars," "imperial wars," or, as the Pentagon now terms them, "low-intensity conflicts," have played an essential but little-appreciated role in its growth as a world power. Beginning with Jefferson's expedition against the Barbary Pirates, Max Boot tells the exciting stories of our sometimes minor but often bloody landings in Samoa, the Philippines, China, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Mexico, Russia, and elsewhere. Along the way he sketches colorful portraits of little-known military heroes such as Stephen Decatur, "Fighting Fred" Funston, and Smedley Butler.

From 1800 to the present day, such undeclared wars have made up the vast majority of our military engagements. Yet the military has often resisted preparing itself for small wars, preferring instead to train for big conflicts that seldom come. Boot re-examines the tragedy of Vietnam through a "small war" prism. He concludes with a devastating critique of the Powell Doctrine and a convincing argument that the armed forces must reorient themselves to better handle small-war missions, because such clashes are an inevitable result of America's far-flung imperial responsibilities.

5 out of 5 stars a must read for these times.......2007-09-28

One of the best books I have read about our (USA) involvement in a surprising amount of insurections and affairs that required more than the State Departments attention.

2 out of 5 stars A seductive message, and yet it is wrong..........2007-07-29

I first read this book several years back, as a young Sergeant. When I first read it, the book seemed to make a lot of good points, and its logic seemed almost ironclad. After having gotten a bit older and a bit wiser, and having been taught at least a few formal critical thinking techniques, I now believe that Mr. Boot's book is pretty much wrong from cover to cover. He basically tells us how great and wonderful our military interventions have been to the world (and to our security), but when you start to look more deeply at his examples (Philipines, Haiti, etcetera) you start to believe that the truth is a lot more complex than he makes it seem.

I am no pacifist, and in many cases our intervention may truely have been unavoidable or have improved things, but the case he makes is almost entirely one sided. Look no further than his analysis of Smedley Butler's change of heart. *sarcasm* Obviously the man simply didn't see "the big picture". After all, a General with decades of experience in the very campaigns Boot cheerleads couldn't possibly be at least somewhat right in his criticisms. */end sarcasm*

I give it two stars because Mr. Boot is a good writer, and he knows how to make his argument seem irrefutable, even when they are very debatable. Just my 2 cents.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect mix of analysis, narrative and good writing.......2007-06-18

The more history I read, the more I admire historians. Writing good history is not easy. You can be overly academic and the book becomes dry and boring, or if one just strings together interesting stories the book lacks intellectual weight.

The Savage Wars of Peace hits the mark. It finds new ways to tell old stories in a new light. Most military history focuses on the big wars and big battles (think D-day and Gettysburg). Many prominent historians have made careers stating the American way of war is based on mass and attrition.

Max Boot takes a different angle. Those "small wars" that pop up in-between the big wars are just as vital to U.S. military history as the big wars. As America looks toward the future of warfare it is looking less like Battle of the Bulge and more like numerous occupations of Haiti. The book carefully moves though American's small wars and demonstrates how similar they are and how regular, irregular warfare really is. The book is very pro-Marine Corps, but they are the ones who fought most of America's small wars and published the now famous "Small Wars Manual" in the late 1930s.

The book was written before the U.S. intervention into Iraq, but it does predict many of its problems. The first half of the book is stronger than the last half, and the last chapter sort of rambles, but it is by far the best military history book I have read this year. Well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars War is the last stage of diplomacy but small wars come first.......2007-04-23

When I first grabbed Boot's book, I was dreading yet another look at conflicts and was stopped at the first page. Boot's knowledge and depth in the small intensity conflicts of the US from Tripoli to the Banana wars of the 80's, is quite astonishing. Having been an avid reader of military history literature, I was caught surprised to learn something new at nearly every page.

I would offer that most readers need to have a good understanding of the main (or popular) opinion of the times the various events Boot refers to occur. This will help to expand the understanding gained by the reader. However, anyone with an interest in the lesser known acts of "diplomacy" engaged by the US government is well advised to add this book to thier collection.

I did find a certain sense of bias toward the Marine Corps (given that the USMC's focus has been predominantly centered on low-intensity conflicts, this is almost unavoidable). Still, being a former Marine, the read was quite motivational as well.

Given the topics of todays counterinsurgency (COIN) activites, this book will add depth and clarity to small unit leaders as well as policy-makers into the challenges the US faces in the near future. Like it has been said time and again, a firm understanding in the past will shed enlightenment of the future.

A must read.

While not supporting or defending the tactics of guerrilla forces of the past, to gain a first-hand dimension of COIN, consider reading Moshe Dayan: Story of my life. Its a bit older and obviously bias toward what may be considered unpopular (or even deploarable) actions of a nation in engaging in diplommatic conflict, but worth the read nontheless.

5 out of 5 stars A good overview..........2007-02-07

Max Boot's book does a service in covering some lesser known aspects of US military history. The general history of small scale landings/naval activity to protect American citizens and trade is well known to many but some of the more obscure events like unofficial American attempts to control some western Pacific islands make interesting reading. This book covers events from the time of national birth to post Gulf War I.

Mr. Boot's writing style does not bore a reader but gives sufficent detail to elevate the book above a popular history. Especially enlightening are the chapters on the history of US military presense in China, the successful(during the actual occupations)efforts in the Caribbean and Central America and the Philipines.

The ending chapter on the lasting effects of these efforts and the likelihood of future efforts is maybe even more interesting. Agree or not with him, Mr Boot lays out some good arguments for most of these efforts to have been beneficial to both the Americans and the localities concerned. His points on Vietnam while not new, are concise and quite valid. The chapter dealing with the myths concerning US military incursions such as "need for exit strategies", "need for declarations of war", etc are excellent. His points on the current emphasis on force protection/casuality minimization are thought provoking also.

My problems with the book were actually minor. This book is unabashedly pro USMC, given the fact that a majority of the small actions were Marine not Army, this makes sense but to a retired Army infantryman...well its annoying (sorry)

One excellent and overriding point he makes however is this. The Armed Forces have overwhelmingly succeeded in their missions if allowed to do so, generally only homefront political interference, not their erstwhile enemies caused failure. With Iraq raging and an almost as hot a war being waged on the home front on the issue, history might be worth looking at.

Book Description

For this book, author Diane Conway approached a police officer, a waitress, a politician, a lawyer, a cab driver, and many others, and asked them each the same question: "What would you do if you had no fear?" The results, chronicled in this book, were both surprising and enlightening. Her respondents told her their secrets, their long-hidden dreams, and their fears. Their dreams included quitting mind-numbing jobs, applying to medical school, buying tickets to South America, finding true love, quitting drinking, or having an affair. The distance between dreaming and doing, according to Conway, is surprisingly short. In What Would You Do If You Had No Fear? her fresh voice and "Studs Terkel in drag persona" challenge readers to stop, open their hearts, and truly live. Included are self-tests, quizzes, growth exercises, and inspiring quotes for realizing one's fear-free potential.

Just what I needed to refocus and prioritize after 20 years in the same job. This was an instant sabbatical for me. Gave me the energy boost I needed to move forward.

5 out of 5 stars a better way to challenge yourself!.......2006-05-16

This book is fantastic in pushing us all to our very limits, posing the best of the best "what if" questions, and ecouraging us to act on them! So much fun to read, dream, and answer with action-- what would you do if you had no fear???

3 out of 5 stars What would You do I you had no fear?.......2005-09-24

A light delightful read that offers hope to those who feel caught in a life of few choices. It's a basic follow-your-heart advice manual which also questions how much one depends on money for happiness.

3 out of 5 stars Inspiration: yes; Substance: no.......2005-06-30

A magazine article prompted me to buy this book. Conway's humor's engaging, and the anecdotes are inspiring. But the book stops there.

Each section is headed with an aspect of the title's question:

*What would you do [if you had no fear]?
*Who would you be [if you had no fear]?
*Where would you go [if you had no fear]?

Your answers are likely to be:
...I would do/make/be/write/create ____, if I had ____.
...I would go to ____, except that I don't have _____.
...I would be a ____, if I'd ever gotten to ____ like I wanted to, all those years ago before ____.

And you are left hanging with your answers. Conway does inspire you to rekindle your desires, but she doesn't help you deal with the rationalizations standing in your way.

[For that, honestly, I'd suggest Laura Berman Fortgang's "Living Your Best Life."]

Conway often alludes to what occurs in her seminars. So the reader (or at least this reader) is left to wonder whether the seminars have the same content as the book, or whether they have more meat to them--and if so, why isn't that in this book?

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational!.......2004-12-12

This book gives hope and inspiration to many who wish to change or break through a fear. I enjoyed every story and could in some way relate to them all. Ms. Conway has a refreshing and witty way of writing and look forward to her next book!! I recommend this as a gift to someone that needs a little boost.

Book Description

Through words and pictures, J. F. Leahy chronicles the transition of eighty-one men and women from civilians to sailors at the U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois. Revealing a side of today's youth that many will find surprising, his examination of the unique American institution--popularly known as boot camp--offers a look into the hearts and minds of a group of young people who are a cross section of the nation. The work sheds light on the controversy over gender integration and helps bridge the gap between the military services and the society they serve.

During the fall of 2000, the author was granted unlimited and unprecedented access to the recruits from the time they arrived at Chicago's airport until their graduation. Observing their training evolutions first hand, he interviewed them at every opportunity and surveyed them through a series of his own specially designed reaction papers. He watched them as they struggled through obstacle courses and learned how to fight shipboard fires. He listened as they shared their feelings, and he cheered them on as they faced the challenges of "Battle Stations" and tested their physical, mental, and moral preparations before entering the fleet. Leahy also shared their pride at the final parade and graduation ceremonies. Both eye-opening and inspiring, his guide will be valuable to future recruits and those who influence them, as well as those who have been there and want a reminder of that special time in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Honor, Courage, and Commitment.......2007-09-21

I recommend this book for any parent who wants to experience their Navy Recruit's experience in the Training Recruit Command Program at Great Lakes (Boot Camp. It made me feel closer to my son and made the "Pass In Review" graduation ceremony more meaningful, having read the book.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-08-24

Enjoyed reading the book, howver it is quite obvious special attention was awarded to the recruits while Leahy was there observing Great Lakes to write this book. I just had a son graduate on August 10, 2007 and trust me things are quite different than the book portrays.

5 out of 5 stars I was in this bootcamp division!!.......2007-06-28

This was my division that the book was written about. DIVISION 005. At the time I wasnt married and my name was Michelle Gray. There is a pic or 2 of me in the book. I went through bookcamp from OCT 2000-Dec 2000. Mr Leahy was there with us every day from sun up to sun down. I only recently got the book to read and it brang back sooo many memories. I think this book is great for anyone wondering how bootcamp will be. Even though things have changed alot through the yrs most of bootcamp is the same. Bootcamp has gotten easier and you get more sleep at night now!!!! If anyone needs any info or wants to know anything about bootcamp you can email me with any questions. I am still in the Navy and stationed in Japan right now. I have been in for almost 7 year and have never been on a ship out to sea. Guess you can say Im pretty luck! [...]

5 out of 5 stars Hoor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Boot Camp.......2007-06-11

Wonderful account of what to expect for my son who will leave for Great Lakes in 2 weeks. Received book on Friday and did not put it down until I finished it today. The other members of the family will be reading this also. From what friends who have been in the Navy have related, this is a very accurate picture of life as a recruit.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent in depth coverage of US Navy Boot Camp.......2007-04-11

Every future sailor in the DEP (Delayed Enlistment Program) should read this book, as should their parents and other loved ones. It provides a detailed account of the Navy Boot Camp experience, following one division from arrival to graduation. A very well written, entertaining read; each of us in our family who read it found it hard to put down once we'd started it.
