The authors of Learning Python show you enough essentials of the Python scripting language to enable you to begin solving problems right away, then reveal more powerful aspects of the language one at a time. This approach is sure to appeal to programmers and system administrators who have urgent problems and a preference for learning by semi-guided experimentation.

First off, Learning Python shows the relationships among Python scripts and their interpreter (in a mostly platform-neutral way). Then, the authors address the mechanics of the language itself, providing illustrations of how Python conceives of numbers, strings, and other objects as well as the operators you use to work with them. Dictionaries, lists, tuples, and other data structures specific to Python receive plenty of attention including complete examples.

Authors Mark Lutz and David Ascher build on that fundamental information in their discussions of functions and modules, which evolve into coverage of namespaces, classes, and the object-oriented aspects of Python programming. There's also information on creating graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for Python applications with Tkinter.

In addition to its careful expository prose, Learning Python includes exercises that both test your Python skills and help reveal more elusive truths about the language.

Book Description

Portable, powerful, and a breeze to use, Python is the popular open source object-oriented programming language used for both standalone programs and scripting applications. Python is considered easy to learn, but there's no quicker way to mastery of the language than learning from an expert teacher. This edition of Learning Python puts you in the hands of two expert teachers, Mark Lutz and David Ascher, whose friendly, well-structured prose has guided many a programmer to proficiency with the language. Learning Python, Second Edition offers programmers a comprehensive learning tool for Python and object-oriented programming. Thoroughly updated for the numerous language and class presentation changes that have taken place since the release of the first edition in 1999, this guide introduces the basic elements of the latest release of Python 2.3 and covers new features, such as list comprehensions, nested scopes, and iterators/generators. Beyond language features, this edition of Learning Python also includes new context for less-experienced programmers, including fresh overviews of object-oriented programming and dynamic typing, new discussions of program launch and configuration options, new coverage of documentation sources, and more. There are also new use cases throughout to make the application of language features more concrete. The first part of Learning Python gives programmers all the information they'll need to understand and construct programs in the Python language, including types, operators, statements, classes, functions, modules and exceptions. The authors then present more advanced material, showing how Python performs common tasks by offering real applications and the libraries available for those applications. Each chapter ends with a series of exercises that will test your Python skills and measure your understanding. Learning Python, Second Edition is a self-paced book that allows readers to focus on the core Python language in depth. As you work through the book, you'll gain a deep and complete understanding of the Python language that will help you to understand the larger application-level examples that you'll encounter on your own. If you're interested in learning Python--and want to do so quickly and efficiently--then Learning Python, Second Edition is your best choice.

4 out of 5 stars very good book for us noobs.......2007-08-26

I'm an experienced C/C++ developer and needed to pick up python in a hurry for work. I ended up buying several python books to make sure I had all my bases covered. I've come to appreciate this book a lot.

It does two things very well. First, it gives you a good overview of the language. You can read the book front to back and it has a nice progression. You'll certainly know the basics if you do that.

Second, and probably more importantly, for those of us too impatient to read a book cover-to-cover, it serves as an excellent reference for beginners. When I started out there were all the little noob things that I found myself constantly having to look up. Like "how do you specify a comment?" or "how do you structure and if-block?" or "how to you get a substring out of a string". Very basic questions like this that many python books don't bother with because apparently they are too basic.

If there is a weakness, it's just that this book is rather small and only covers the very basics. So reading this book alone will certainly not make you a mighty python programmer, or even give you enough info to probably write something interesting. But this book definitely deserves a place on your bookshelf if you are starting out and need the basics.

3 out of 5 stars teaches the language, but didn't convince me.......2007-08-05

I took some time off of work, and I really wanted to just relax and goof off. I'd won a Safari subscription in the Perl Foundation auction, and I wanted to put it to use. I added Learning Python to my bookshelf and had at it.

It's hard to separate Learning Python from learning Python, but I'll do what I can: I felt the writing was a bit dry. It didn't flow the way the Camel and Llama books did, and the attempts to inject humor were really awkward. For example, the author is excited to explain that Python is named after Monty Python, and that "foo" and "bar" are replaced with "spam" and "eggs." This sounds silly. In practice, it's distracting. My brain is used to reading code with foo and bar, and knows how to skip over them. "spam" and "eggs" makes it harder to read.

I guess this is trying to help me become familiar with Python culture, but it just bugged me.

Learning Python (the activity) made me realize that Python's most immediate failings were not the ones I'd heard bandied about. The whitespace thing has serious ramifications, but it wasn't keeping me from coding quickly. Instead, I found that the lambda syntax and statement/expression division in Python really, really got in the way.

The book didn't see this as a problem. It didn't even seem interested in acknowledging that some people thought it was a problem. It just said "lambdas are anonymous functions! Isn't that great?"* and moved on.

One of the best programming language books I've read was AppleScript: The Definitive Guide. The thing that made it a great book was the author's willingness to say, "Look, this is where the language is most insane and horrible." If the authors think that Python is always great, they should at least provide explanations of what pitfalls are avoided by the constraints that leave many outsiders grimacing.

In the end, I learned enough Python in a week to get through all the exercises and then refactor some goofy code I had inherited, confident of what I was doing. Considering that I was also relaxing, drinking beer, and playing video games through that whole week, I think the book lived up to its job.

It just didn't convince me to convert.

(* OK, I'm paraphrasing.)

1 out of 5 stars This book is awful. Use the online tutorial instead........2007-07-28

I am an experienced Perl and C programmer who wanted to try something new, and everyone raves about Python. The language itself is great -- but this book is awful. Here's the really short form of why I think so:
- The point of Python (or any programming language) is to do things, not to marvel at how cool the language is. Reading the book, you can't do anything other than toy programs until you're almost all the way through. That's 400+ pages of reading before you can do anything more interesting than basic operations.
- The book isn't concise -- quite the opposite. The authors marvel at the implementation details of the language at the very start -- which takes up many pages and isn't really relevant for the beginning python programmer.
I finally just went to the online python tutorial[...]it covered most of the same topics with a lot fewer words, and was less confusing to boot.
- The reason I buy books rather than just use online resources is to use the exercises as a method of forcing myself to learn the language in a structured fashion. The exercises in the book are trivially easy: they're not about thinking and understanding, but regurgitating what the book said. Because you're not doing any real work until the 400-page mark, you can't do anything really interesting in the exercises or on your own (if you're just reading the book).

I've read a lot of "Learning XXX" books. This is by far the worst.

My recommendation is to skip this book and go straight to the online tutorial. You'll save trees, money, and time.

4 out of 5 stars Great for experienced programmers.......2007-06-17

Learning Python is an efficient way to learn python if you are familiar with one or more other programming languages. The book does a nice job of comparing and contrasting python's qualities with those of other languages (C++ and Java in particular) and provides many concise examples that highlight specific features well. For me, Learning Python was a great way to get going with software development in python.

If you are fairly new to programming, however, this book probably isn't for you. The first few parts try to be a more general introduction to programming, but they aren't enough for those truly new to programming languages. As an experienced developer, you will likely skim through the first few parts of this book quickly.

It's also not an exhaustive reference manual, and with Python 2.5 now released the book is getting a bit dated. But the core language features have not changed much, and there is plenty of online material describing that changes since version 2.2/2.3 that this book is based on.

4 out of 5 stars "Learning Python" is right.......2007-06-05

The title of this book says it all: "Learning Python" is a great book to read if you want to learn Python. Granted, Python is not the hardest language in the world to learn, and I'm not sure that this book goes into enough detail about Python's trickier features (generators, anonymous functions, etc.). Still, I was able to sit down, read this book, work through the examples, and walk away feeling like I really knew how to develop software in Python. Most learn-a-language books are too dense for you to learn the language from the book alone, but "Learning Python" definitely made it as easy as possible.

Stock investing is a relatively recent phenomenon and the inventory of true classics is somewhat slim. When asked, people in the know will always list books by Benjamin Graham, Burton G. Malkiel's A Random Walk Down Wall Street, and Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits and Other Writings by Philip A. Fisher. You'll know you're getting really good advice if they also mention Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefèvre.

Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is the thinly disguised biography of Jesse Livermore, a remarkable character who first started speculating in New England bucket shops at the turn of the century. Livermore, who was banned from these shady operations because of his winning ways, soon moved to Wall Street where he made and lost his fortune several times over. What makes this book so valuable are the observations that Lefèvre records about investing, speculating, and the nature of the market itself. For example:

"It never was my thinking that made the big money for me. It always was my sitting. Got that? My sitting tight! It is no trick at all to be right on the market. You always find lots of early bulls in bull markets and early bears in bear markets. I've known many men who were right at exactly the right time, and began buying or selling stocks when prices were at the very level which should show the greatest profit. And their experience invariably matched mine--that is, they made no real money out of it. Men who can both be right and sit tight are uncommon."

If you've ever spent weekends and nights puzzling over whether to buy, sell, or hold a position in whatever investment--be it stock, bonds, or pork bellies, you'll be glad that you read this book. Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is full of lessons that are as relevant today as they were in 1923 when the book was first published. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

What could I do? That wasn't an asinine tip. It was advice that came from the brother-in-law of the chairman of the board of directors. Dan was not only Alvin Marquand's closest friend but he had been kind and generous to me. He had shown his faith in me and confidence in my word. I couldn't do less than to thank him. And so my feelings again won over my judgment and I gave in. To subordinate my judgment to his desires was the undoing of me. Gratitude is something a decent man can't help feeling, but it is for a fellow to keep it from completely tying him up. The first thing I knew I not only had lost all my profit but I owed the firm one hundred and fifty thousand dollars besides. I felt pretty badly about it, but Dan told me not to worry.

5 out of 5 stars Classic stands test of time........2007-10-02

80 years old, yet still stands the test of time. It's about legendary trader Jesse Livermore and lessons can be learned by doing the good things Livermore suggests and avoiding the bad ones.

4 out of 5 stars A classic - it belongs on every bookshelf.......2007-09-27

Even though this book was written nearly 100 years ago, the lessons contained within still apply today. You won't find specific trading systems, or investing rules in the book. You will find, however, an inside account of market manipulation and the thought processes of a great trader.

I especially liked the exposure on the operations of "bucket shops" - the early 20th century counterpart of some modern retail Forex brokers.

While there's little technical information, a beginning investor may not 'get' much of the material here - a good knowledge of markets and trading is required to follow some of the anecdotes.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Stock Market Must Read.......2007-09-25

My title states it all. Read it. There's value in this book that you will realize as you spend more time analyzing the markets and market participants. It's an easy read that's designed like a story rather than finance textbook. Really good if you're into tape reading also. Are you a quant or programmer with no market experience? Read this and you'll learn a few things about why the markets don't always behave the way our models might predict.

5 out of 5 stars A damn fine book about a humanity really.......2007-09-19

Jessie Livermore's book is supposed to be about trading. But in reality, reading about the case of Mr. Partridge and that bucket shop, one realizes that this is about human nature. Greed, fear, we've all heard it before, but here we see it happen before our eyes. When those bucket shop exchange owners basically take on Livermore, its because their greed got the best of them and now are scared that this "Boy Plunger" figured them out. How many of you, who've traded in highly speculative issues, be it options on Google or even forex, kinda thought there was some sort of fix in?

To those not familiar with markets, this is basically the first book you should read. It won't teach you how to trade or make a fortune, but it will show you the human side of speculating. Veteran traders will see the various episodes in this book and relate it to their own experience. One simply can't go wrong with this book, easy to read, and I dare say fun. It doesn't matter if it's the early part of the last century, where Livermore's adventures took place, or the early part of this one, (as he says in the book,) "speculation is as old as the hills.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-08-24

The principles of human and market behavior never change! A joy to read this book.

Book Description

Operator books are based on the principles of adult learning to meet the reading needs of a shopfloor audience. Written at the appropriate reading level, these books are heavily illustrated with photos and drawings. The text is set up with one concept for every two to four pages so that it can be easily read in chunks; headers and assists in the margin make the significance of each section stand out. Each chapter summarizes main concepts and tools at the beginning and lists application questions at the end. This particular book presents the main concepts and tools from Hirano's 5 Pillars of the Visual Workplace. Hirano discusses how the 5S theory fosters efficiency, maintenance, and continuous improvement in all areas of the company, from the plant floor to the sales office. It explains why the 5S's are important and gives the who, what, where, and how of 5S implementation.

This book is written at the perfect level for floor implmentation. It is a no bones, to the point, with wonderful examples. Very easy reading within a few hours. I will be taking it to my Plant Manager to help convince him of the advantages of 5S.

4 out of 5 stars A great start to 5S.......2005-09-30

This book is a great informational tool to get the ideas of the Five S concept into your employees. It is an easy read and doesn't heavily focus on how to implement these ideas but rather what to look for to help you implement Five S.

1 out of 5 stars A poor book with little content .......2005-07-20

Disapointing. Here we have a $25 book with 120 pages, probably at least 100 of which could be eliminated. The book is wordy, vague and full of meaningless examples and ambiguous statements. Don't waste your money.

This book does an outstanding job of conveying the need to start with 5s as the building block of Lean Manufacturing. The material covered is easy to understand and easily conveyed to the employees who are impacted by these practices. I would recommend this book to anyone considering going lean.

Book Description

Groovy, the brand-new language for the Java platform, brings to Java many of the features that have made Ruby popular. Groovy in Action is a comprehensive guide to Groovy programming, introducing Java developers to the new dynamic features that Groovy provides. To bring you Groovy in Action, Manning again went to the source by working with a team of expert authors including both members and the Manager of the Groovy Project team. The result is the true definitive guide to the new Groovy language.

Groovy in Action introduces Groovy by example, presenting lots of reusable code while explaining the underlying concepts. Java developers new to Groovy find a smooth transition into the dynamic programming world. Groovy experts gain a solid reference that challenges them to explore Groovy deeply and creatively.

Because Groovy is so new, most readers will be learning it from scratch. Groovy in Action quickly moves through the Groovy basics, including:

  • Simple and collective Groovy data types
  • Working with Closures and Groovy Control Structures
  • Dynamic Object Orientation, Groovy style

Readers are presented with rich and detailed examples illustrating Groovy's enhancements to Java, including

  • How to Work with Builders and the GDK
  • Database programming with Groovy

Groovy in Action then demonstrates how to Integrate Groovy with XML, and provides,

  • Tips and Tricks
  • Unit Testing and Build Support
  • Groovy on Windows

An additional bonus is a chapter dedicated to Grails, the Groovy Web Application Framework.

Early PDF chapters of Groovy in Action are available from the Manning Early Access Program (MEAP) at http://www.manning.com/koenig. As part of this program, readers can also discuss the early manuscript with the author and help shape the manuscript as it's being developed by joining the Author Forum.

5 out of 5 stars You can't live without Groovy. You just can't........2007-08-18

I am going to make this short, because I want to get ONE message across to you, loud and clear. If you are working with Java, you MUST take a look at Groovy.

I cannot overemphasize the coming importance of Groovy on the Java platform, not just in web development, but everywhere. Just try it already. You'll "get it." Just trust me and do it!

Groovy in Action is a first rate introduction and reference, and you really do need a book for this language. I don't recommend trying to go it alone with online reference material, though there is plenty there to give you a taste of why Groovy is about to become your new favorite language.

Read the other reviews. I'm not going to repeat a bunch of stuff here. But whatever you do, TRY GROOVY. You will quickly come to wonder how you ever got along without it.

    5 out of 5 stars Cracking stuff.......2007-07-20

Whatever you think about the merits of Groovy as a language, a serious contender on the JVM, or a complete mess, you couldn't hope to find a better advocate for Groovy than this book.

One of the secrets of GinA's success is that it assumes the reader is already proficient with Java development, including Swing, Ant and JUnit. It would also help to know about XML, SQL, HTML, JSP and a vague idea of how MVC applies to web apps. You don't need to be an expert in these areas, though. If you've sufficient knowledge to decode the preceeding alphabet soup of initialisations, you'll be ok.

The reward for possessing this background knowledge is that GinA doesn't waste time with trivial examples, and barrels through Groovy the language in the first part, leveraging your existing knowledge of Java to highlight the important differences in Groovy. In particular, the advantages of interpolating strings, simple hash and array construction syntax, optional typing and metaprogramming are stressed. The big win in Groovy over Java is the use of closures and their used in a block-based approach to iteration, which is as well motivated here as the material in, say, The Pickaxe is for Ruby.

The second part of the book provides examples of the Groovy library. It begins with an excellent chapter on Groovy's Builders, which provide a very neat, uncluttered syntax for putting together hierarchical structures. An obvious application is XML, and by extension Ant scripts, which appears to have some major advantages compared to the challenging readability of vanilla Ant. Even more impressive is the SwingBuilder example, which builds a GUI with the minimum of fuss and a complete lack of anonymous inner classes.

Beyond the Builders, there are also compelling chapters on templating HTML and server side Groovy (Groovlets), writing DAOs and DTOs in Groovy to simplify database programming, and a chapter on XML, which even manages to find the space to introduce Groovy for SOAP, XML-RPC and REST web services.

The final part of the book describes some non-core libraries and other applications of Groovy. The chapter on Groovy extensions to JUnit is interesting, although perhaps this is one place where it assumes too little on behalf of the reader. I would have assumed that the average developer sufficiently motivated to pick up a book on Groovy knows enough about unit testing and JUnit that more space could have been given to the advanced topics. Particularly appealing is the idea of testing Java code with dynamically typed Groovy unit tests, which would make mocking and stubbing more palatable; I would have liked more on that subject.

Another noteworthy chapter is the last one, which introduces the web app framework Grails. This has a different style to the other chapters, being a dialogue between two of the authors as they build a simple app. This reader admits to finding it a little bit naff, but it does usefully demonstrate the grails way (which is a lot like Rails).

If you have the slightest interest in Groovy, alternatives to Java on the JVM, or dynamic languages, GinA makes the perfect case for Groovy as a first class integration language for all the bits of Java where you really wish you were working with something like Perl, Ruby or Python. It's well-written, with good examples, clear explanations, and it's relentlessly practical, never forgetting its target audience. It's all the more impressive given lead author Dierk Konig's comment in the preface that English is not his first language. Kudos to him and his co-authors for what they've delivered.

One can only wish that every language had its GinA. Outstanding.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly as good as everyone says.......2007-06-22

What more can be said of a book extolled by dozens of reviewers, a book that seems to have matched its subject in ubiquity, a book that will likely become to Groovy what the "pickaxe book" is to Ruby? As much as I would love to be a lone voice (or rather a lone whisper) of dissent, the clarity, simplicity, and accuracy of most of Groovy in Action cannot be overlooked. Let no one be fooled by the size of the book - to learn the gist of Groovy, all you really need is a leisurely stroll through chapters 2 through 7 (chapter 1 is the mandatory introduction/history chapter which, in the frustrating tech book tradition, doubles as the "free sample" chapter). Of course, most of its clarity and concision GIA inherits from the language it describes. Still, it is encouraging to have a book that is as valuable a reference as it is a tutorial, and GIA shines in both capacities.

With all its accolades, GIA does have two caveats. First, it is getting closer and closer to being out of date. Groovy 1.1 is already in Beta, and it has an impressive list of features not covered in this Groovy 1.0 book: EJB3 support, JUnit4 and TestNG integration and annotations, just to name a few. I am reminded of Pragmatic Programmers' Agile Web Development with Rails, whose second edition shipped a year after its first. I sincerely hope GIA 1.0 buyers will not be similarly cheated.

The second caveat is the coverage of Grails. Grails may be the single most attractive Groovy application to date yet its coverage in GIA is flaky at best. The authors decide to abandon their polished, clear, and concise writing style and instead author the entire chapter as a bland conversation amongst themselves. In addition to failing to grasp the humor in such presentation, I find that this style hinders me from following along with the tutorial. It makes scanning back for missed steps or clarifications extremely difficult. Furthermore, vapid attempts at humor occupy space that could be otherwise devoted to some omitted topics, such as mapping domain objects to specific tables or using data sources. Coverage of these topics would have been far more valuable than the authors' purported beer garden conversations with a DBA named Martin.

Despite the pour Grails coverage and the looming Groovy 1.1, Groovy in Action is a must-have for anyone who is even mildly interested in Groovy or dynamic languages in Java in general. Coupled with the ease, clarity, and downright beauty of the Groovy language, GIA can turn even a passing interest in Groovy into a burning passion.

    5 out of 5 stars Programming literature.......2007-05-15

It is a Gordian challenge to write an interesting and readable book about nothing but a programming language. Dierk König and his co-authors actually did succeed in cutting the knot. They even accomplished much more: they added lots of insight about object orientation, programming language design and good software development. As long as I only had the PDF availabe, it served me as THE reference for all my questions about Groovy. Now the printed copy makes my commuting time worthwhile. Cover to cover. 700 pages of computer LITERATURE.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing journey.......2007-03-29

The book contains a lot of Groovy interesting features, with samples tested to work, asides the writting style exciting to you to discover the new programming world open in front of your eyes thanks to the exceptional Groovy features.

I consider it as much as a Groovy bible.

    Book Description

Unknown to most modern-day investors and traders who cherish Reminiscences of a Stock Operator as one of the most important investment books ever written, the material first appeared in the 1920s as a series of articles and illustrations in the Saturday Evening Post. Now, for the first time ever, this beloved classic is being made available in its original, illustrated format.

You'll track the exploits of Jesse Livermore as he won and lost tens of millions of dollars playing the stock and commodities markets during the early 1900s. At one point, he made the then astronomical sum of 10 million dollars in just one month of trading!

Originally published as a fictionalized account, the Illustrated Edition combines the Saturday Evening Post's memorable illustrations with Edwin LeFevre's timeless investment advice, recreating the look, feel, and message that was first published more than 80 years ago. Among the most compelling and enduring pieces ever written on trading, the new Illustrated Edition brings this story to life like never before. Order your copy today.

I ordered this book 2 months ago. After weeks in shipping they sent it to a random address in a different state, and offered a refund. I got my refund and ordered it again, it's now been exactly one month and the package is still stuck somewhere in a different state, with no shipping update for a week. And now they e-mailed me asking for a review.......sure I'd love to review it, if you ever get me the product I ordered two months ago! Thumbs down.

    5 out of 5 stars A TIMELESS TRUTH.......2007-07-26

Reminiscences of Stock Operator is a classical works that testifies that the psychological and technical aspects that moves the market has not changed even to this present day... The beauty of the fictional story based on the greatest of minds that traded in the market and made millions and lost fortunes speaks very vividly to us today from their wisdom and experience... I have found the book to be full of wisdom, education and guidance that the financial markets is not a game to be played on the hopes of getting rich for nothing...To be successful requires the greatest discipline on our ourselves..And in the game of speculation this book let us know that the financial markets owes us nothing and that we can't force our hands...

5 out of 5 stars As valid today as ever.......2007-04-28

As I read this book I wondered if it was written recently, as most books written in the last couple decades seem to have the same info, including the 'newly discovered' psychology of trading. Save a ton of money and buy this book first. Then you may not want any of the others. It's well written, though the author's whole intent is to prove no one can 'beat' the market, which is a little discouraging. I mean, after all, I think I will. Everyone interested in trading should read this early in their career, if not first.

    5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-02-04

As useful in the mad 1920's and 30's as it is today! Every trader should read it... at least twice. If you're into Hedge funds, Private Equity or Asset Management, you should probably read it not less than 3 times - in between the lines!

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading... a true classic.......2007-01-09

If you asked most top traders for a list of their top 5 books on trading or investment psychology, I'd think this one would feature in over 90% of them. It's definately one of the most entertaining.

This book, the thinly disguised biography of trading Jessie Livermore is a real page turner. I just couldn't put it down as I was fascinated by the tales and exploits he tells of his trading adventures from another era (although the content is every bit as relevant today). While it doesn't explain in any depth his trading mechanics (Wykoff's book does that, however, I wouldn't just pick up that book thinking I could copy his method without doing a substantial amount of research, testing and work, as did Livermore himself), it does give you insight into his trading philosophy and strategies. If you were to highlight the points relevant to trading psychology in this volume, you'd be highlighting almost every page.

If you enjoy this one, then make sure to get the other book on his life story (Jessie Livermore - The World's Greatest Trader) which is every bit as interesting - he was quite a character! (and vastly richer than I had thought from reading this book). That book outlines more of the personal side of his life than this one which is more focused on his trading advenutres. He certainly had a fascinating life, the kind of life most of us who begin trading hope it will provide. It's kind of sad that he died broke and alone, as I guess happens with many geniuses and artists.

Highly recommended. All the best with your trading.

Looking to get your first ham ticket? This is the book for you. Great study guide with many exam example questions. Spend some time with it and you may ace you tech exam. Kudos to ARRL.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to ham radio.......2007-05-14

I used this book to study for my technician level test. I passed with a 100 percent. The book was well written to give you enough information in a interesting read. This book is not too dull or dry except for the FCC rule part. But rules are hard to make exciting to read. This book told you enough to pass the test with plenty to spare.

The technician test is not too technical, no electrical circuits or attenna design type questions. The test is more operating procedure, permitted operating frequencies, permitted wattages and attenna heights.

If you want to stay on the local voice repeaters, packet radio, or internet protocols on the 2m, 1.25m, 70cm and the other permitted bands; a technician's license is all you need.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-07

I would highly recommend this book if you're interested in ham radio. It gives you plenty of information and has the entire question pool as well. Just by reading it in 3 weeks and studying the questions in the back, I only missed 2 questions.

If you're getting started in ham radio, good luck! You'll have lots of fun on the air.

Took my Technician exam in February 2007 & passed it with missing only two questions. The most current version of this book will prepare you for the examination & you will pass it.

    3 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-05-12

This book rather than teaching the principles, teaches the question pool. It goes through question by question, just giving the answer and an extremely brief explanation, if any explanation at all. All of the material is covered, however, the book seems best suited for someone with previous radio and/or electronics experience.

5 out of 5 stars GROL Plus by Gordon West.......2006-11-04

This book was very helpful and informative. I needed to pass the GROL for a job after graduating from an electronics course. The Dean of my school recommended this book as a help guide to pass the test. I passed my MROP in 2 weeks, and my GROL in 15 more days!

5 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on any other study material!!!.......2004-12-13

This was the only material I needed to pass the tests for a GROL license with a radar endorsement the first try. I took all three tests on the same day and as far as I could tell the questions and answers were exactly like the ones in this fantastic book. If you don't have any electronics background it will be tough to understand what you're memorizing, but you could still do it. I was an electronics technician in the Navy and then switched to the Air Force where I worked as an aircraft communications, navigation and radar technician until I retired in 2000. This gave me enough background to make much of the information in the book at least look familiar though I had forgotten much of my electronics training.
The only real change I think the authors should consider for upcoming editions is to write better explainations on many of the questions. Many times it seemed like they were merely restating the question. Nevertheless, please keep in mind that this is not an electronics course though you'll gain a lot of electronics knowledge through the book. Buy the book, study hard and you'll likely pass. I'm 49 and if a guy who is getting gray can do it, so can you!

2 out of 5 stars The book had to be renamed: how to become a succesful salespersons.......2007-10-07

I have read most of the book. I won't say that it is useless, but that it is rather disapointing. NLP is a very powerful set of practices for influencing other people. The name of the book is the one thing the author did that succeeded in convincing me to buy this book. The book is mainly about how to become a successful salesperson, almost nothing about other practices of covert hypnosis. Thus the name of the book suggests a wider scope. Throughout the book, the author seem to plant the messages "buy my other stuff" and "use my knowlege", and he seems to do it in a very ineffective way. If at least he was able to use covert hypnosis more effectively for that, the way Bandler and Grider (the original developers of NLP) did, then I would be tempted to believe I can learn a lot more from him.

Yet, the book is not useless. Some of the things written in this book are deep understanding of the selling business.

4 out of 5 stars Quality information, easy read and fun to apply at work........2007-10-06

This is a good book with quality information. Kevin Hogan has written several good books on persuasion. I have read Psychology of Persuasion, Covert Persuasion and Covert Hypnosis in that order. Although a decent amount of the information in this book is covered in Covert Persuasion, there is a substantial amount of new information and tactics that can be applied to many situations in life. Overall this is a nice read for someone that would like to raise the bar at work and elsewhere.
Working in the Formula Race Car of Sales "metaphorically speaking" anything that can give me an edge is worth looking at.

    Good job again Kevin

5 out of 5 stars Kevin Hogan Again HITS The Mark.......2007-09-03

Want to IMPROVE Your Life? Be better at your Job? Go deeper in to Kevin Hogans work after reading some of his other books (like Pyschology of Persuasion)? Then this is the logical next step for you....unless you are lucky enough to attend one of his seminars in person! This is the next best thing!!! Because his work is transformational! I wasn't even aware of all the changes taking place in my life until other people started commenting on them...people have even told me that I LOOK different (as in younger and more vibrant), but I AM aware that I am making more money and I am happier!! And it began about two years ago when I started reading and applying Kevin Hogan's work....and Covert Hypnosis is the latest. Read it only if you, too are ready to make life changing leaps forward!!! Ahd then as you apply it, watch for the inevitable changes to occur around you!! You will be glad you did. Don't thank me, thank Kevin.

1 out of 5 stars Here's an OVERT suggestion - SAVE YOUR MONEY!.......2007-08-10

Maybe this book does help becuase I was totally taken in by the marketing hype describing the book.

First, this book has quite a lot of the shortcomings of many self-published books -- rampant typos, grammatical errors and unverifiable testamonials followed by unsubstantiated anecdotes sprinkled with factual errors.

Second, it's regurgitated, dumbed down NLP for the masses.

Third, the information is dated although presented as "new" and "cutting edge".

There are many other books on NLP and body language that are a lot more helpful. Don't buy this book, especially at its inflated price. That's part of the ploy. If it costs so much it must have the "good stuff" in it, right? Wrong!

I'm just very disappointed to be told that I need to lose weight, grow taller and dress for success to get my subliminal message across to make the sale.

3 out of 5 stars A good book for therapists with difficult clients.......2007-06-11

Some people work readily with cognitive behavioral therapy. Some people are happy to try hypnosis. And some people have the troubles they have because they work very hard to hang onto the psychological mindsets that bring them about. Covert hypnosis has many good ideas for using language to heighten suggestibility and covertly implant suggestions that would not be accepted if presented overtly. On the whole, this looks like a method of turning a conversation into a long-form induction, except that there isn't an explicitly denoted conversion to hypnosis.

I am a certified hypnotist, but I'm a customer service agent by trade. I purchased this manual after reading the author's Psychology of Persuasion. I had hoped this would offer a more in-depth look at the communication strategies discussed in that book, and have not found this manual as helpful in that regard. If you are a therapist or work with people in other settings where wide-ranging, extended conversation is a given, this manual offers lots of good suggestions for guiding the conversation, all the way to planting suggestions for those resistant to change in a therapeutic setting. But if you're in sales, customer service or another profession where shorter interactions are the rule, I'd recommend the Psychology of Persuasion instead.

    Book Description

A unique approach to quantum field theory, with emphasis on the principles of renormalization Quantum field theory is frequently approached from the perspective of particle physics. This book adopts a more general point of view and includes applications of condensed matter physics. Written by a highly respected writer and researcher, it first develops traditional concepts, including Feynman graphs, before moving on to key topics such as functional integrals, statistical mechanics, and Wilson's renormalization group. The connection between the latter and conventional perturbative renormalization is explained.

Quantum Field Theory is an exceptional textbook for graduate students familiar with advanced quantum mechanics as well as physicists with an interest in theoretical physics. It features:
    * Coverage of quantum electrodynamics with practical calculations and a discussion of perturbative renormalization
    * A discussion of the Feynman path integrals and a host of current subjects, including the physical approach to renormalization, spontaneous symmetry breaking and superfluidity, and topological excitations
    * Nineteen self-contained chapters with exercises, supplemented with graphs and charts

5 out of 5 stars Extremely solid for self-teaching.......2006-04-06

This book is an ideal introduction to quantum field theory for a graduate student. Assuming a strong background in basic quantum mechanics and classical mechanics, Huang develops quantum field in a methodical fashion. In contrast to other popular quantum field theory books (such as Peskin) Huang doesn't leave out important details, especially with regard to the mathematics behind spinor fields. Plus the book is very readable.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the physics behind renormalization.......1999-05-16

A very good introduction to QFT. It starts with a rather classical account of QED, then develops renormalization and applies it mainly to statistical physics. So the text does not cover non-abelian gauge theories, and is not sufficient for readers who learn QFT for particle physics applications. But the exposition of renormalization is really excellent and complete. I liked the exceptional clarity and lucidity of most calculations, and the excellent set of problems. Solving them all extends the book's scope far beyond the table of contents.
