Book Description

One womanÂ's story of why she left the culture of Islamic Jihad to support American liberty and tolerance

Why are so many Muslims embracing jihad and cheering for al-Qaeda and Hamas? Why are even the modern, secularized Arab states such as Egypt producing a generation of angry young extremists?

Nonie Darwish knows why. When she was eight, her father died while leading Fedayeen raids into Israel. Her family moved from Gaza back to Cairo, where they were honored as survivors of a “shahid”—a martyr for jihad. She grew up learning the same lessons as millions of Muslim children: to hate Jews, destroy Israel, oppose America, and submit to dictatorship.

But Darwish became increasingly appalled by the anger and hatred in her culture, and in 1978 she emigrated to America. Since 9/11 she has been lecturing and writing on behalf of moderate Arabs and Arab-Americans. Extremists have denounced her as an infidel and threatened her life.

In this fascinating book, she speaks out against the dark side of her native culture—women abused by Islamic traditions; the poor and uneducated mistreated by the elites; bribery and corruption as a way of life. Her former friends and neighbors blamed all the their troubles on Jews and Americans, but Darwish rejects their bigotry and calls for the Arab world to make peace with the West.

The only hope for the future, she writes, is for America to continue waging its War on Terror, seeding the Middle East with the values of democracy, respect for women, and tolerance for all religions.

5 out of 5 stars An Informative Perspective.......2007-09-15

If you're like me, you might know very little about Mideastern culture and life. This book is a highly readable and personal account of one woman's life, experiences and views on Muslim culture. I'm enjoying it; she puts a "human face" on this part of the world and it's issues.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening insights into the causes of Islamic extremism........2007-09-11

The author grew up in Egypt under Nasser's dictatorship, but later moved to America. Her father was an Egyptian military officer killed in Gaza by Israel because he organized raids to cause mayhem inside Israel. She reports on the problems in Egypt and Gaza, and on the government and religious propaganda which is polarizing the Islamic world to the point of Jihad. This is an eye-opening read, and it gives insight into how difficult it will be to ever correct this problem.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK.......2007-09-01

THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO TRULY UNDERSTAND HOW THE MIDDLE EAST FEALS ABOUT AMERICA AND WHY. NONIE DARWISH IS A VERY BRAVE WOMAN AND I THANK GOD SHE HAD THE GUTS TO WRITE THE TRUTH.

5 out of 5 stars Now They Call Me Infidel: Why I renounced Jihad for America, Israel and the War on Terror.......2007-08-25

This is an excellen book for those seeking to understand Arab Muslim perspectives. The culture is based on a background, history and value system entirely foreign to our way of thinking. The author relates her life from early childhood, through her school years and early adulthood living first in Gaza then Cairo. She is from the upper middle class, the daughter of a high ranking military officer who is martyred. She describes what it is like to be a woman in the arab muslim world. She raises the issuesleading to a lack of trust both within the society and in relation to other societies. She discusses the inner thinking and the daily propaganda regarding Israel. She also gives important information on the Arab view of Palestines role in the conflict. She distinguishes between the radical Islamic movements and moderate Islam. She notes the purpose and intent of fundalmentalist Islam is the eventual overtaking the world. She discusses how this is being taken to countries throughout the world to bring about this change. We need to understand those with whom we are dealing. This is a book that is easy to read, direct and highly informative.

Now They Call me Infidel: Why I Renounced Jihad for America,
Israel, and the War on Terror, by Nonie Darwish.
Sentinel, Penguin Books, 2006, 258 pp

From our first encounter with Nonie Darwish, through her articles and first web site, we felt that she was someone special. We were attracted by her open and obvious love for America. That web site disappeared, only to reappear as [..] , with this unique opening statement:
To Muslims and Arabs across the globe: Reject hate, embrace love. Bring out the best in Islam by showing your compassion, gratitude and forgiveness. Make the holy land truly holy by giving Israel and the Jewish people the respect they deserve in their tiny little country. This is not a crisis over land. It is a crisis of the soul; a crisis in our faith, judgement and self confidence. Israel should not be regarded as an enemy, but as a blessing to our neighborhood. We need not fear peace, but embrace it.

These are remarkable words to be coming from the daughter of a "shahid" (a martyr for jihad) who was assassinated while serving as a high-ranking Egyptian military officer stationed in Gaza specifically to be of assistance to the Palestinians.

The September 2001 attack on the twin towers in New York was life-changing for many people. From that moment on Nonie Darwish felt compelled to take a stand. It led her to write her life story "Now They Call Me Infidel" which is a pure gift to all of us. She also stepped out into public life with all its demands of speaking engagements, and the disapproval she was bound to experience.

After reading her book with eagerness, I would suggest that it is the perfect book for supplemental reading by all High School students. Let them hear about Islam from someone who has experienced it fully from birth and has turned to Christianity and America for a better life. Let them sense her loyalty and love for her new country. As she describes it--"Many immigrants come to this great nation in search of material gain, which is fine; however, the biggest prize I gained was my religious freedom and learning to love. For me it was nothing short of cataclysmic. I had turned from a culture of hatred to one of love."

In her book she describes her impressions of America. We Americans need to see our country through someone else's eyes, so that we can withstand the propaganda that insinuates that we are the culprit and instigator of all the troubles of the world. It is eye-opening to read through the chapter "A New Beginning in America" and find out why the following words are in italics; and learn just how much our culture differs from the Muslim culture in Egypt. This is specially applicable to the difficult life programmed for women. She considers "friendliness and helpfulness"," courtesy", "diversity and multiculturalism", "self-sufficiency, pride in labor", "generous, honest, and open", "informality", "women's relationships", and "child rearing".
Gradually, to Ms. Darwish's horror, she discovers that her beloved land of refuge, her America which means so much to her, is being attacked from within. She is painfully aware of those old patterns of hatred, as they eminate from mosque after mosque.

She lashes out at terrorists who are invading the Western countries: "America's Islamic enemies and critics--even those who love living in the United States - are nothing more than pirates. That's what Islamic terrorists are - pirates. Instead of building their own society as a model of what Islam should be, they leave it in ruins and look to conquer hard-working successful lands.....They cannot stand to live in a Muslim culture, and they have their eyes set on beautiful and welcoming democracies, not to blend in, but to rob those democracies of their soul and ruin the value system and culture that made them great...." p. 185. You need to get hold of this book and sense the depth of Ms. Darwish's feeling as she begs you to save our precious country from the onslaught she sees coming.

She describes her shock at the Arab world's response to 9/11. They dared to rejoice over the tragedy. When she phoned family members and close friends, whose opinions she had formerly trusted, she could not believe that many thought America deserved to suffer.

The last chapter is "Jihad Comes to America". Nonie dismisses the popular and over-used definition of jihad as merely spiritual pursuit: "there is only one meaning for jihad, and that is: a religious holy war against infidels." p. 201. She remarks that she is shocked by the radicalism she encounters on the American campus. "I am stunned to see them choose to revive the worst of Islamic culture in America rather than be part of America and demonstrate the best of Islamic culture."

On page 159 there is a moving description of Nonie's introduction to Christian worship when she and her husband and family attended a church and "listened to a message of compassion, love, acceptance, tolerance, and prayer for all humanity." There had been some violence in the Middle East and the pastor prayed for everyone--"Muslims, Jews, and Christians. It was very different message from the prayers to `destroy the infidels' that I grew up with....I learned the most important command in scripture was `Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Nonie had found what she was hungering for: "In this church, that day, my soul was revived and nourished with the love of a tolerant and forgiving God." Knowingly she was willing to be called an infidel.

After a remarkable experience of visiting Israel Nonie explains: "I now fully understand why the United States supports Israel and rightfully so. My love of America now extends to Israel." Hence the name of her new web site!

We salute another brave woman, and heartily recommend that you read this extremely important book.

His words would help bring about the end of a brutally unequal system and would show a timeless method for achieving fairness and justice for all. A CALL TO CONSCIENCE is a milestone collection of Dr. King's most influential and best-known speeches. Compiled by Stanford historian Dr. Clayborne Carson, director of the King Papers Project, and by contributing editor Kris Shepard, this volume takes you behind the scenes on an astonishing historical journey--from the small, crowded church in Montgomery, Alabama, where "The Birth of a New Nation" ignited the modern civil rights movement, to the center of the nation's capital, where "I Have a Dream" echoed through a nation's conscience, to the Mason Temple in Memphis, where over ten thousand people heard Dr. King give his last, transcendent speech, "I've Been to the Mountaintop," the night before his assassination. In twelve important introductions, some of the world's most renowned leaders and theologians--Andrew Young, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, and Mrs. Rosa Parks, among others--share with you their reflections on these speeches and give priceless firsthand testimony on the events that inspired their delivery. Expressing a deeply felt faith in democracy, the power of loving change, and a self-deprecating humor, A CALL TO CONSCIENCE is Dr. King speaking today. I listen to these over and over, can't stop listening to Dr. King. Very moving and the things he said and did were all so real. Our generation of now needs to hear his speeches. You really want this collection!!! I'm buying a couple more as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars A Call to Conscience........2007-03-26

As one who may be called a baby-boomer, I was born at a privileged time; I more or less 'came of age' in the late 1960's, in a restless and changing world that was asking old questions anew, and breaking down old paradigms. Looking back from our present perspective, nothing of those times has cast a longer shadow than the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The King Estate has long been very protective of copyrights for Dr. King's speeches and this small volume is very welcome. Selecting Dorothy I. Height to introduce the 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech makes good sense, but does selecting Senator Edward Kennedy to present an introduction bring ethical legitimization to 'A Call to Conscience'? If the answer is no, there might have been a less distracting choice.

"We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence." - MLK, 1963

4 out of 5 stars Nice to have.......2007-03-19

I think it is very much worth the purchase. From a historical prespective its very informative. The way MLK speaks is amazing and moving. The way he presents himself makes me want to better myself. I have to admit there is a problem with this product. The sound is not very clear on some parts of the cds. With that said, would I buy this product knowing what I know now, Indubitable Yes!

5 out of 5 stars Important Work.......2007-02-18

Excellent introductions and speeches for those of us who weren't there to live it. Challenges one to seek to do important things, not ordinary things.

5 out of 5 stars Martin Luther King Jr. is still teaching.......2007-01-10

This historical collection of the public speeches of Martin Luther King Jr. is a treasure for Americans and people all over the world. He is still teaching his message of truth, peace, and justice. The dramatic emotional connection you get when hearing his voice deliver these messages is an important way to learn about recent history.

I was born in 1947. I once heard Dr. King speak at UCLA when I was a student there in the 1960's. He, like his mentor Mohandas Gandhi, were remarkably wonderful men. Such peaceful men were murdered by assassins bullets but could not silence them. People can still learn from this fallen leader. Like Gandhi he was never elected to public office yet his words have great impact today while the actions of politicians have failed to achieve their intended goals. Hearing taped recordings of his live speeches is a treat.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent enthusiam in the face of tremendous adversity.......2007-08-15

This lady is certainly to be commended for maintaining her stamina to accomplish what she did with so many things going wrong. Anyone who has the disgusting attribute to slam these ladies when they were working for others as well as themselves needs to sit down in front of a mirror. There are so many reasons and more all the time actually that there should be another REAL investigation into the whole terrible tragedy of 9-11. I fully agree with them and applaud all they have done and are still trying to do. They say "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and "God doesn't give you anything you can't handle" and I guess that would seem to be true in this case, however, as I know from my own life, no matter what kind of battle you are fighting it does take its toll on one's body. Good going to all you ladies who participated in this and what a wonderful book that was. Well written to the point I could hardly lay it down!

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opener.......2007-06-12

Kristen Breitweiser gives us a compelling view of our government through the eyes of an average citizen. She takes us on a journey thorough her life with her husband before 9/11, through that awful day and then through the aftermath. Kristen and other 9/11 widows have been fighting for truth and accountability for the attacks since that tragic day and have had to overcome hurdles every step of the way. Kristen's strength and determination is inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars All I can say is "thank you, Kristen.".......2007-06-02

I usually don't go in for biographies and I believe all the attention on 9/11 has been a distraction ... that being said, this booked really rocked me. The author is completely "real" and human. Within a few minutes you are identifying with her life and her hopes and dreams. When the tragic death of her husband and thousands of others occurs, you feel her shock and pain.
This book points out why 9/11 is important. Not only do we need to come to grips with people in the world who want to do harm to Americans - we need to come to grips with a government that utterly failed Kristen, the other 9/11 survivors and victims, and all of us as citizens.
The book is riveting and revealing. I encourage anyone who cares about our country to read this book!

4 out of 5 stars A Cup of Public Caffeine.......2007-04-23

On September 11, 2001, Ron Breitweiser called his wife to tell her that there was an explosion in the other twin tower; he saw people jumping out of the windows to their deaths. He told her not to worry, he was all right. That was the last time she would ever talk to her husband. Kristen Breitweiser's life was about to literally collapse.

This is a well-written, poignant, heart-felt story of a woman who first blew off the man with whom she would later fall in love, and to whom she remained attached at the hip until his death. Infant daughter, golden retriever, home in the country and near the shore, and devoted husband transformed from an elysium dream to a stygian nightmare in one day.

After her shock, Kristen wanted answers. Why was legislation passed preventing airlines from being sued by victims? Why did the Bush administration oppose an independent commission, refuse to allow the commission to have subpoena power, limit the duration of the commission, stonewall on providing documents, refuse to allow the president to give sworn testimony, place restrictions on testimony of other White House staffers, spend $50,000,000 to investigate the loss of the Columbia Shuttle, but initially offer only $3,000,000 to investigate the greatest attack in US history? (An investigation into the attack on Pearl Harbor began twelve days after.)

This is Kristen Breitweiser's odyssey from New Jersey housewife to activist and advocate. She and three other widows a.k.a the "Jersey Girls," endured snide editorials from conservative rags, governmental lethargy, promises kept and broken, and stonewalling. They made innumerable trips to Washington D.C. for change and they were changed in the process, from Bush-supporting republicans to those holding an administration's secretive feet to the fire.

My only disappointment came when this classy, lawyer-educated widow felt a need to pen an afterword to a neurotic, spoiled brat who craves attention in any form, named Ann Coulter. But even in this 2nd person account, Breitweiser stayed on the high road. Then again, against Coulter that doesn't require much effort.

Please read the book. It truly is a wake-up call.

4 out of 5 stars A Clearly Stated Account.......2007-04-15

Like most Westerners, I have tried to read a great deal about the events of 9-11-01. I've turned to may different memorable sources, most dealing in the realm of geo-political analysis.

This was a different kind of book. It wasn't written by some cloak and dagger operative or government official, expert or opposition pundit. This was a personal memoir from an upper class wife. She lost her husband in the attack (he worked at the World Trade Center). After this, she dedicated her free time to finding answers. Most of the book is about her efforts.

This is very much a "people powered book" that tells a frustrating story of how walled off the American people are from their leadership. She finds that she meets a collection of con artists at every turn of both parties, but she clearly finds Republicansin the majority. Eventually she encounters a smear machine that comes after her without mercy and doesn't let truth get in the way....if you are strongly partisan towards the right this may not be the book for you.

This isn't a high tech, sophisticated summation of history. Instead, she asks many questions that don't get answered. While reading through, the reader eventually begins to understand one of the themes of the book: the questions will likely never be answered. Powerful interests are keeping information from getting out to the public. Small men and women are backed by big people. Those small people failed at many levels on 9-11, and we are never going to find out the depths of how those failures have been covered up.

The book doesn't have the happy ending you hope it will as you read through. In fact, once finished you understand that the struggle she is waging for the truth about 9-11, the one many of us would like to know about, may be never ending.

Book Description

Does it really help women to think of sexual harassment primarily as a legal issue?

High-profile sexual harassment suits, such as that of Paula Jones against President Clinton, are often life-changing events, with all parties coming away with careers, reputations, and lives profoundly affected. Women have long suffered on the job from sexual extortion, now called quid pro quo harassment, but today the controversy centers on "hostile environment" harassment. Every one has an opinion about it; managements spend more and more money training people not to do it; and still the suits strike like lightning-devastating and seemingly random. Women and men often feel polarized in the workplace by what they perceive to be general hostility couched in sexual terms.

What to Do When You Don't Want to Call the Cops questions establishment assumptions that women are, by definition, passive victims who require government help. It sees instead a period of transition toward a more balanced population of women in the workplace, with accompanying disruptions that can be minimized by understanding. Joan Kennedy Taylor presents what we know about the workplace and interviews managers, labor experts, and workers in such male-dominated fields as construction, engineering, business, and medicine to shed light on the male group culture that exists without women. She illustrates expressive behaviors that may be objectionable but are not sexual harassment and proposes specific strategies by which these objectionable behaviors can be countered, including a new feminist approach in company training programs. Taylor examines traditional and nontraditional workplaces, and female on male as well as male on male harassment, in order to apply these strategies to the entire picture.

Lively and anecdotal, Taylor's balanced, non-adversarial study fills an important gap by providing strategies for businesses and employees, as well as for those who find themselves the target of sexual harassment.

This is a fantastic, much-needed book. Its common sense approach will help men, women and employers handle issues around harassment in a practical, meaningful way. The perfect antidote for the "politically correct" police. Especially important for professors and students in academia. Easy to read style makes it accessible for any reader.

    Book Description

Three of the most successful peace processes of the 1990s--El Salvador, South Africa, and Guatemala--experienced worse violent crime after their wars concluded. Organized crime in Bosnia deepened after the 1995 Dayton peace agreement. These and other cases of post-conflict societies displaying serious and persistent problems of citizen insecurity and an absence of the rule of law underscore one of the central challenges of international security in the twenty-first century: How can external actors not only establish security in the immediate aftermath of war, but also create self-sustaining systems of justice and security?

In Constructing Justice and Security after War, the distinguished contributors--including scholars, criminal justice practitioners, and former senior officials of international missions--examine the experiences of countries that have recently undergone transitions from conflict with significant international involvement. The volume offers generalizations based on careful comparisons of justice and security reforms in some of the most prominent and successful cases of transitions from war of the 1990s drawn from Central America, Africa, the Balkans, and East Timor.

The contributors also offer answers to the question How can societies emerging from armed conflict create systems of justice and security that ensure basic rights, apply the law effectively and impartially, and enjoy popular support?

    Book Description

American Hiroshima presents ideas for individuals and policymakers to defeat terrorists, strengthen America's democracy, and establish the United States as a global force for peace.

American Hiroshima makes the case for a new way of thinking to solve existing conflicts and prevent future ones. A key lesson from September 11, 2001 is billions of dollars spent on the military and intelligence services did not stop nineteen people with box cutters. American Hiroshima highlights why we are fooling ourselves and ignoring the reasons why these attacks took place when we think that increasing defense spending, starting wars in the Middle East, and reforming the intelligence services will make the United States safe from terrorists. Unless the root causes of terror are addressed, Americans will experience terrorist attacks many times worse than 9/11.

Readers will be shocked to learn the truth about America's evil alliances with Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. Even more shocking may be Al Qaeda's plan to kill four million Americans with nuclear bombs. American Hiroshima provides the details along with the cities that are on Al Qaeda's target list.

Weapons of mass destruction, while a mass deception to promote pre-emptive war, were never the reason for invading Iraq. The real reasons for the invasion, first revealed in American Hiroshima, will help you understand why controlling the largest water resource in the Middle East, in addition to Iraq's oil resources, is at the heart of this conflict. Understanding the true reasons for the invasion of Iraq highlights the very real likelihood that another war will start during President Bush's second term.

What can be done to get the United States back on track? Fortunately, American Hiroshima offers an innovative and exciting proposal for a brighter future for the United States.

2 out of 5 stars Just Another "Blame the Victim" Book..........2007-05-11

Not sure why people like Dionisi miss this important point (perhaps criticizing the Bush Administration is just to tempting to pass up?), but the reason 9/11 occurred isn't U.S. foreign policy or George Bush's obvious stupidity...it's religion. If you choose to read this book, contrast it with something by Christopher Hitchens and get a feel for what it leaves out. Yes, Bush and his cronies are after oil. Yes, U.S. foreign policy needs to be changed. But, bin Laden and his gang of thieves are motivated by a typical Muslim hatred of all things non-Muslim. This book provides a one-sided, myopic view of a very complex issue, and manages to do something that is all too common with today's liberals...it blames the victim.

    5 out of 5 stars An eye-opener must-read book for all Americans.......2005-12-01

I fully agree with David Dionisi about the causes of the current conflict and the contribution of US foreign policy towards this conflict. He has eloquently described many real reasons. The biggest problem I find in today's world is that people in the non-Muslim world (particularly in the US) do not know or do not want to know the underlying causes of the current conflict. They are content with what their government tells them. In that context, David's book and his interview should be an eye-opener to the American people.

The fundamental causes of the current conflict are: (i) unconditional American support for Israel which enables the latter to continue occupation of Arab land; (ii) heavy handed approach to Iraq for a long-time and its ultimate occupation by the US causing death of thousands of people; (iii) ignorance and indifference of the American people about the rest of the world; and (iv) role of the American media in keeping the American people in dark about the real face of American foreign policy. To make the matters worse, the media (controlled by a few people) has colluded with the military-industrial establishment. The so-called "democracy" is managed by money and the media. Public opinion is shaped by the media, and winning in elections depends upon money. This is a dangerous situation because the State under such conditions becomes subjugated to the wishes of the rich and powerful and democracy becomes a mockery. I agree with David that unless the American people realize the truth and demand greater accountability from their political masters, the future looks bleak. Every American should read this book to know the truth about what their government is doing around the world.

George Bush often points to hatred as the fundamental cause of the current conflict. But the reason he cites has no truth in it. Dionisi discussed in this book the real reason why people around the world hate the U.S. The hatred that George Bush has promoted further in the Muslim world by invading Afghanistan and Iraq are like dormant volcanoes. Whether those dormant volcanoes lead to an "American Hiroshima" one day remains to be seen.

An implicit but fundamental assumption underlying this book is that Al Qaida has the capability to smuggle "missing Russian suitcase nukes" into the U.S. The problem with this assumption is that in the presence of such a capability by Al Qaida, an "Israeli Hiroshima" is a logical predecessor of an American Hiroshima not only because of Israel's hegemony in the Middle East, but also because it would have far devastating consequence on Israel than a similar event in the U.S. Given that we have not even heard of any such attempt, it would be premature to assume that Al Qaida has a capability to carry out an "American Hiroshima". However, the basic conclusion of the book is thought provoking that the longer the U.S. pursues injustices and killings by war, the more likely is it that an American Hiroshima could materialize one day or another.

However, it would be incorrect to assume that only Al Qaida has an interest in the American Hiroshima project (or as a means of deterrence on the part of Iran). Israel has an active interest in the American Hiroshima project because by making it looking like "an Iranian Operation", Israel would cause the U.S. to fight its proxy war in the Middle East.

    5 out of 5 stars a sleep-disturbing book.......2005-06-23

2:00 a.m. Can't sleep. I begin to write my thoughts, prompted by the book I'm reading, "American Hiroshima." I want to call some one, to tell them about the book. But at 2:00 a.m., I can't. Instead, I start a letter to everyone I know about the book I can't put aside.

I flag passages with blue "stickums" -- touching, alarming passages. The book is plastered in "stickums."

The book is by this ex-Army Intelligence guy - the author who's disturbing my sleep -- former U.S. Army Intelligence Officer. Gotta be a smart guy. I heard he's good. Well, ok, skeptic though I am, I'll see.

I picked the book up at 11:00 p.m. mostly to relax, to go to sleep by, as is my habit. After a while, I realize that the book rings true. Every page I flip to rings true. Nothing goes against what I have read and remember as world events recounted in the press over the last several decades.

David Dionisi started out young -- he explains -- in the U.S. Army, rising in its ranks as an insider. He writes firsthand from some of the world's hot spots. He's honest, detail-honest. Spellbinding honest. Even kindhearted, compassionate. Strange combination for an ex-Army Intelligence guy. Then, his words startle me because I realize he's not writing fiction - and he's not telling half the story. He's writing under a 25-year military oath of secrecy.

Presently, after rummaging around, no matter which pages I turn to, I begin to see the man David truly is - emerging credible and courageous. A steadfast, modern-day patriot as loyal as any this United States has produced, touching on the spiritual plane all along.

3:00 a.m. I'm done. Look over the book for yourself. Check it out on-line.

    5 out of 5 stars Compelled, convinced...a challenge.......2005-05-08

I feel compelled to write this review; a first for me.
Imagine that you are 10 years old. Your life is healthy and happy. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, you father's business fails; over the next year, your family is plunged into debt and poverty. Three meals a day are not an option and one meal a day is a blessing. You watch your baby sister die and your mother weeps, while you forage for food or make a pittance at a grueling job. This has happened throughout your community and anger is rampant. Your childhood is gone and replaced by hunger, disparity, confusion and raging resentment.
Two years later you are 12 years old, impressionable, desperate for relief, and find out that a large business is responsible for the events of the last two years. While you eat a half rotten apple, they throw left over food away.
Enter an "organization" that promises that you a better life, food each day, a "lesson" to the "business" that stole your childhood and your happy home and cost your sister her life.
This "organization" is Al Qaeda and the "business" is the United States of America. Who is the hero here, who is the enemy?
The above describes the relationship that is the fallout of many years of negligent foreign policy, many of the circumstances unbeknownst to the American public, whether through governmental deception or public ambivalence.
Mr. Dionisi, in American Hiroshima, through personal experience as an intelligence officer and through historical reference explains why the citizenry of the U.S. must INSIST NOW on responsible foreign policy by our government, or the starving twelve years old of today will be the Al Qaeda of tomorrow. A country of great prosperity, such as America, cannot hope to cultivate amiable relations with other countries when our policies at times leave other countries without drinking water and their children struggling to live.
As a conservative American, the book, American Hiroshima, has convinced me that the effect of much of our foreign policy has sewn the seeds of a harvest of resentment and hatred that is a result of policies being dictated by economic, governmental and personal gain. As a mother of three children, it has made me realize that I can no longer indulge myself in a peripheral view of politics; the cost to my children and future generations of the world is too great; the foreign countries of today, do not "hate us for our freedoms", they want the
"privilege (?)" to eat a meal each day.
To those Americans that consider themselves good, diligent, hard-working people that aspire to live in a democratic country that cultivates the same throughout the world, I challenge you to read this book and walk away untouched. The historical happenings speak for themselves, all which are referenced. The ideals that hate begets wars and kindness begets appreciation are time tested and evident in the instances sighted. However, it is the American citizens' responsibility to become informed, and demand responsible governmental policy. This book explains why; so that that the 10 year old of today does not grow to be a 12 year old infested with hate and resentment for the U.S., but a 12 year old appreciative of the assistance received. In this way, Al Qaeda will die a slow death while the ideals of democracy are celebrated.
I highly recommend this book, it's message and ideals.

      Book Description

      J. Phillip Thompson III, an insider in the Dinkins administration, provides the first in-depth look at how the black mayors of America's major cities achieve social change. Black constituents naturally look to black mayors to effect great change for the poor, but the reality of the situation is complicated. Thompson argues that African-American mayors, legislators, and political activists need to more effectively challenge opinions and public policies supported by the white public and encourage greater political inclusion and open political discourse within black communities. Only by unveiling painful internal oppresssions and exclusions within black politics will the black community's power increase, and compel similar unveilings in the broader interracial conversation about the problems of the urban poor. Tracing the historical development and contemporary practice of black mayoral politics, this is a fascinating study of the motivations of black politicians, competing ideologies in the black community and the inner dynamics of urban social change.

4 out of 5 stars Double Trouble: Excellent Book .......2006-06-12

Double Trouble should be required reading in any academic study of politics, as well as by anyone remotely involved in the political process (community/grassroots organizations, pastors, union leaders, candidates, campaign staff, etc).

The book gives a snapshot of what has been and a blueprint for what can be when a community and its elected leadership work together.

The conventional wisdom of the past was that if we (Blacks) had a seat at the table...or God forbid if we had the seat at the head of the table(the HNIC)...we could somehow right some of the injustices done in and to our communities almost at will.

Author, J. Phillip Thompson, presents an effective and compelling analysis of the realities of the "political game," especially the limitations on Black Mayors and in particular, Black Mayors who want to be re-elected (his analysis can also be applied to most, if not all, Black elected officials). The dilemna is "double trouble" because Black politicians get it from both sides- you're darned if you do and darned if you don't.

The author's call for "deep pluralism" is largely academic and seems more of an insertion into the larger debate of how Black Mayors can provide effective representation within the capitalist structure of politics.

I have already highly recommended the book to all of my political colleagues and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for Double Trouble.......2006-03-22

"It is, quite simply, impossible to understand the evolution of the racial foundations of urban politics--and, indeed, all of contemporary urban politics in America--without reading Double Trouble." -- David N. Dinkins, 106th Mayor of New York City

"Double Trouble's transformative and incisive critique challenges conventional wisdom from both the right and left: Forgo blind faith in identity politics, overcome the myth of expert racelessness and re-engage the urban poor in revitalizing not only our cities but also our democracy." -- Lani Guinier, co-author of The Miner's Canary

"J. Phillip Thompson's Double Trouble is an outstanding piece of scholarship that combines astute analysis of race and politics in America's cities with deep reflections on the theory and practice of democracy in the United States. It has much to offer not only students of American politics, but also those who are concerned about how deliberative democracy and pluralism works, or should work, in the nation's cities." -- Michael Dawson, author of Behind the Mule and Black Visions

"Thompson provides an original and compelling way to think about the possibilities inherent in urban politics. His call for deep democracy shows why broad civic engagement in the black community is a necessary first step in creating a genuinely new politics in America." -- Margaret Weir, Professor of Political Science and Sociology, University of California, Berkeley

"Double Trouble brilliantly and bravely dissects the central paradox facing black mayors: pushing too hard for racial justice will cost the support of white elites, while pushing too little will further alienate black voters. The compelling portrait of the Dinkins administration is the best description now available of this paradox in operation. This is a path-breaking book." -- John Mollenkopf, author of The Contested City

"This theoretically bold and analytically brilliant book is an immediate classic. Double Trouble simultaneously exposes the vacuity of the liberal retreat from race and the savagery of the conservative manipulation of race. Anyone concerned with what politics and public policy can do to reduce inequality and to heal racial frictions must consider Thompson's indictment of both routine party politics and of black politics and heed his hopeful prescription for moving beyond the current stalemate." -- Lawrence D. Bobo, Professor of Sociology, Stanford University
