5 out of 5 stars Among my first batch of books...with greatest influence on attaining personal achievement in life!.......2006-07-21

The first batch of significant books that had the greatest influence on me in terms of attaining personal achievement includes mostly Napoleon Hill's books:

- The Law of Success;
- Think & Grow Rich;
- The Keys to Success;
- Success through a Positive Mental Attitude;
- Succeed & Grow Rich through Persuasion;

The others were from Clement Stone, Dale Carnegie, & Earl Nightingale.

That was the early 70's when I had just started work as a young engineer.

The author, Napoleon Hill, had impressed me most by his relentless dedication in spending some two to three decades of his life in pursuing & researching the success secrets of the rich & famous...with a little help from Andrew Carnegie, of course.

As matter of fact, many of the famous people he interviewed were also favourite role models of mine e.g. Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, just to name a few

Till this day, I have never forgotten what he said:

"The most powerful instrument we have in our hands is the power of our mind."

I have never ceased to be fascinated by the simplicity & the potency of his ABCs of personal achievement: CONCEIVE, BELIEVE & ACHIEVE!

It is certainly enlightening to note that even Stephen Covey had drew inspiration from Napoleon Hill's work even though he never made that credit. He only admitted that the 7 Habits had its origins from "200 years of success literature in the United States." That remark itself is self explanatory.

Anthony Robbin's Mastery program as embodied in his books as well as his audio/video resources is no exception, even though he has been influenced in larger extent by NLP.

If you look at & compare the 17 principles of personal achievement in 'The Law of Success' &/or the 13 Steps to Riches in 'Think & Grow Rich', one can obviously see the uncanny resemblance of the 7 Habits & the Mastery principles...in one way or another.

At this juncture, let me outline the principal theme of each book:

The Law of Success: the original course on the fundamentals of success - all the seventeen essential principles of personal achievement;
Think & Grow Rich: The seventeen essential principles are reframed & condensed in terms of thirteen concrete steps to wealth creation (in actuality, this is a condensation of the Law of Success);
The Keys to Success: a further elaboration of the seventeen essential principles with concrete suggestions, exercises & advice;
Success Through Positive Mental Attitude: joint authorship with Clement Stone, with a further emphasis on developing a positive mental attitude;
Succeed & Grow Rich Through Persuasion: joint authorship with Clement Stone, with a further emphasis on developing master salesmanship & networking;
[It is pertinent to note that Clement Stone actually built his insurance business empire with these principles.]

My most productive, personal learning experience from Napoleon Hill's work is the understanding - application - of his success principle #1: Develop Definiteness of Purpose.

[Very surprisingly, J Y Pillay, former Chairman of Singapore Airlines, - who had been credited for building the airline to what it is today, A GREAT WAY TO FLY! - also credited his work axiom to this same success principle, but he attributed it to an ancient Hindu scripture known as Bhagavad Gita.]

I am certainly gratified to note that Napoleon Hill's work had casted so much influence on - & empowered - so many people in the world, including myself.

5 out of 5 stars Million Dollar Ideas $$$.......2006-04-27

I've read Think and GRow Rich at least 20 times, and now Read this one at least 2times going on Three now..I received Spiritual blessings because of these principles that cannot be measured in money or material things.. only in the eternal. Now I am being prepared for My wealth, My Million dollar ideas to manifest into reality. I am now practicing these principles daily and look forward to the physical manifestation which has been prophesied by prophets, preachers, and people who don't even know me..The seed was planted years ago now What has been sowed is being reaped. Wealth is circulating in my life, this wealth flows to me in avalanches of abundance. All my needs, desires, and goals are met instantaneously.

5 out of 5 stars Clear the cobwebs from your thinking. Great endorsement from Robert Schuller!.......2005-10-01

Having already read Think & Grow Rich, I didn't think that there was anything more that I could learn about PMA. I figured that this would be more of the save only on a different cover. Boy was I surprised!

W.Clement Stone and Napolean Hill joined forces for this text. W. Clement Stone used the principles in Think & Grow Rich to amass a personal and self made fortune in excess of $400,000,000
when that was worth $400,000,000.

I found chapter 2 particularly interesting. How Robert Christopher was able to travel around the world in 84 days with only $80 merely as a result of setting it as a goal, conceiving, believing and then achieving it is impressive.

Success Through A Positive Mental Attitude is divided into five parts, 19 chapters and over 300 pages. It's a fun, easy read and provides powerful strategies i.e. pilots to succeed.

In 1990, I met a very successful businessman who told me he went from unemployment living in Tampa, Fl to over $2.5 million and moved to Hawaii where he bought a boat and retired in only 18 months using these principles along with the right opportunity.

Automatic Wealth, The Secrets of the Millionaire Mind-Including:As a Man Thinketh, The Science of Getting Rich, The Way to Wealth and Think and Grow Rich

The Bestsellers on this Book give sound advice about money or how to obtain it. Just shoot to the stars and stay focused on your dreams and it will happen. There is nothing that we can imagine, that we can't do. So what are we waiting for, let's begin the journey of self fullfillment.

4 Bestsellers in 1 Book:

As a Man Thinketh by James Allen

Your thoughts and your dreams determine what you are and what you will be. This little book is meant to stimulate men and women to the discovery and perception of the truth that they themselves are makers of themselves, by virtue of the thoughts which they choose and encourage. Contents: Effect of Thought on Circumstances; Effect of Thought on Health and Body; Thought and Purpose; Thought Factor in Achievement; Vision and Ideals; Serenity;

The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles,

THIS book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward. It is for those who have, so far, found neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study of metaphysics, but who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached.

The Way to Wealth by Benjamin Franklin

The first American book on personal finance, The Way to Wealth by Benjamin Franklin is still the best and wisest money book ever written. Originally published in 1758 as the preface to Poor Richard' s Almanack, this little gem has been through innumerable printings and sold millions of copies to those in search of smart but entertaining advice about hard work, earning and saving money and debt. As the 21st Century charges along and the current economic climate continues to send out mixed messages, Franklin' s simple but wise commentary on the value of industry and frugality resonates as much for us today as it did for listeners nearly 350 years ago. This book is very short, but he gets to the point.

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

"Whatever your mind can conceive and believe it can achieve." Napoleon Hill

Be prepared, therefore, when you expose yourself to the influence of this philosophy, to experience a CHANGED LIFE which may help you not only to negotiate your way through life with harmony and understanding, but also to prepare you for the accumulation of material riches in abundance. Teaching, for the first time, the famous Carnegie formula for money-making, based upon the THIRTEEN PROVEN STEPS TO RICHES.

Organized through 25 years of research, in collaboration with more than 500 distinguished men of great wealth, who proved by their own achievements that this philosophy is practical.

5 out of 5 stars Automatic Wealth 1 : The Secrets of The Millionaire Mind.......2007-05-07

This was an excellent collection of similar material. It helps to have them in one volume to cross reference
or to quote a particular author. The size of the book ( slightly larger than the typical paperback ) was
also a plus !!
I would highly recommend this collection.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST classic books on abundance and wealth.......2007-03-29

Where do I start with these books? Classic! Timeless! Must read! I sound like I'm writing copy for a blockbuster best seller. These books are the basis for many of the wealth and abundance work that we see today. Look at all the new material and then compare with these and you will see that the new ones have been updated in language and example, but the truths remain the same.
I believe in going to the source of popular material and especially The Science of Getting Rich and Think and Grow Rich are the wonderful. Both are short reads, but the concepts may have you going back over and over to clarify what seems to be amazing assertions. Take the messages seriously and you may seriously change your life and financial situation!

4 out of 5 stars The Key.......2007-01-04

This audio CD is great for people looking to understand how to increase their value as a money maker in today's society. The principles are great I've already started to develop a new way of thinking, it's really teaching you how to be aware of how easy it is to get ahead in life. Plus it's convenient, I just pop it in the CD player an listen, but the trick is to listen to it consistently if you want change to come your way.

    Book Description

    Rousing, big, spirited, its action sweeping across oceans and continents, the last novel of Alexandre Dumas-lost for 125 years in the archives of the National Library in Paris-completes the oeuvre that Dumas imagined at the outset of his literary -career. Now, dynamically, in a tale of family honor and undying vengeance, of high adventure and heroic derring-do, The Last Cavalier fills that gap.

    The last cavalier is also Count Hector de Sainte-Hermine, who for three years has been languishing in prison when, in 1804, on the eve of Napoleon's coronation as emperor of France, he learns what's to be his due. Stripped of his title and denied the hand of the woman he loves, he is freed by Napoleon on the condition that he serve as a common foot soldier in the imperial army. So it is in profound despair that Hector embarks on a succession of daring escapades. Again and again he wins glory-against brigands, bandits, the British; boa constrictors, sharks, croco-diles. And at the battle of Trafalgar it's his marksman's bullet that fells the famed English admiral Lord Nelson.

    Yet however far his adventures may take him-from Burma's jungles to the wilds of Ireland-his destiny lies always in Paris, with his father's enemy, Napoleon.

    Book Description

    The age of Napoleon transformed Europe, laying the foundations for the modern world. Now Alistair Horne, one of the great chroniclers of French history gives us a fresh account of that remarkable time.

    Born into poverty on the remote island of Corsica, he rose to prominence in the turbulent years following the French Revolution, when most of Europe was arrayed against France. Through a string of brilliant and improbable victories (gained as much through his remarkable ability to inspire his troops as through his military genius), Napoleon brought about a triumphant peace that made him the idol of France and, later, its absolute ruler.

    Heir to the Revolution, Napoleon himself was not a revolutionary; rather he was a reformer and a modernizer, both liberator and autocrat. Looking to the Napoleonic wars that raged on the one hand, and to the new social order emerging on the other, Horne incisively guides readers through every aspect of Napoleon’s two-decade rule: from France’s newfound commitment to an aristocracy based on merit rather than inheritance, to its civil code (Napoleon’s most important and enduring legacy), to censorship, cuisine, the texture of daily life in Paris, and the influence of Napoleon abroad. At the center of Horne’s story is a singular man, one whose ambition, willpower, energy and ability to command changed history, and continues to fascinate us today.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Nice Digest of Napoleon's Influence on France.......2006-12-15

    Horne's pithy little book is certainly not a good introduction to Napoleon the man, general, or emperor, nor a comprehensive history text on France. It is, however, a valuable collection of his most lasting and significant policies, ambitions, whims, excesses, successes, and failures.

    Horne writes with the facile hand of an expert in his element, yet this book will certainly prove most valuable to the casual rather than novice or advanced scholar of Napoleonic France. It covers his rise to fame, deceptively humble power-grab, impressive reformist tendencies and initiatives, his staid morality contrasting personal hypocrisy, as well as Napoleon's creation of a new and (at least in theory) merit-based aristocracy, as well as the advent of modern French culture. Colorful episodes featuring his beloved Josephine as well as other flames and vixens are recounted.

    This will be a nice addition to a Francophile shelf, but only a sketchy entry text for the curious.

    3 out of 5 stars A summary of Napoleon and his accomplishments at home........2004-09-27

    For those seeking a biography of the man or his military accomplishments, this book does not fit the bill. Horne focuses on the political, economic, artistic, and scientific accomplishments of Napoleon and the Napoleonic Regime. So this book focuses on an area not covered by most authors. Since Napoleon is a topic that many authors have attempted, Horne focuses on an area not usually written about. Napoleon changed a lot in France, and Horne outlines both his accomplishments (Code of Napoleon for law, and scientific research) and his failures (theater, opera, and literature).
    This is not an easy read, despite its brevity. It is a read that will enlighten a Napoleonic historian. However, the subjects and concepts are more difficult to understand than the
    military victories.

    4 out of 5 stars almost conversational, yet scholarly, riveting and humorous.......2004-08-31

    Engaging and informative, Horne manages to present his vast knowledge of Napoleon and his age in an almost conversational tone that-while full of rich historical detail-manages to be scholarly, riveting and often quite humorous. For example, in addition to learn about the numerous ways Napoleon's two decade rule transformed Europe, we learn that his wife and Empress Josephine's wardrobe contained 666 winter dresses, 230 summer ones and only two pair of knickers. If one wishes for a direct introduction to Napoleon and his influence, The Age of Napoleon is an excellent place to start.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice Addition to Horne's Seven Ages of Paris.......2004-05-27

    This newest addition to the Modern Library Chronicles series is not a history of Napoleon but a snapshot into this time in France, although by his very nature the man defines the times. For a short biography of Napoleon, take a look at Paul Johnson's slim volume and for a fuller context of Parisian history read Alistair Horne's The Seven Ages of Paris. This book, the Age of Napoleon, is Alistair Horne's examination of one of those particular ages and the man at the centre of it. The book is arranged by topics as opposed to a chronological history so basic familiarty with European history will be an advantage. The author also repeats himself, at times, as the story moves back and forth. But this book will give the reader an idea of these tumultous times and either lead them to further reading about Napoleon the man or work as a refresher to a previously read biography.

    1 out of 5 stars Not an enjoyable read.......2004-05-23

    I don't recommend this book unless you're already familiar with the entire history of Napoleon. It's filled with vague references, assumes the reader lives in the writer's world with the references he doesn't explain, and uses many French sentences without any translation.

    I bought this small book, hoping it would be a quick, interesting read. I found it was neither.

    On the other hand, if you enjoy French arrogance, you might enjoy working through this book.

      4 out of 5 stars Napoleon wins another.......2007-05-16

      Very funny. Great reminder of the highlights in the movie. I bought this for my wife as she is a fan of the movie, and she read it cover to cover and laughed loud and often.

      5 out of 5 stars If you love the movie, you'll love this.......2006-11-28

      I really enjoyed this book. I originally said it was for my 10 year old son, but let's be honest, it was really for me. This is one of the funniest movies ever and now all the great quotes are right here in 1 book.

      5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2006-08-25

      I didn't give a flip about this movie until my son introduced it to me. As a former ethics teacher at a small college, the film struck me as pure genius for its abiltiy to capture the moral milieu of the high school experience, likely as it should be without guns and gangs. My daughters really liked the movie too so I decided to buy this book for them. Taken for what it is, it is a lot of fun and worth the sweet moula you have to spend. We laughed and had a good time going through it together. I recommend it as a stocking stuffer for your teens.

      1 out of 5 stars Wasteful, unnecessary........2006-03-22

      As if obnoxious teenagers need more incentive to quote an inane and rather dull movie. The quotebook is not worth the money, simply put. There's nothing within that one cannot find by simply renting the movie or even looking it up on the Incredible Edible Internet (hint: head towards www.imdb.com). Before you buy this, stop for a moment and think to yourself: is this something I really need? Of course sometimes you just WANT, but if you already own the movie, or you have access to a library or computer, there's really no point in you wasting your hard-earned money on something so... Well. Pointless.

      It's not particularly expensive, but there are plenty better products on which you can spend your 8 bucks.

      3 out of 5 stars A little redundant but great to have laying around.......2005-12-03

      The book is redundant in that it is a book of quotes from, yes, the movie with the same name. And probably most people who are interested in the book will own the movie. Or will have seen it so many times that they can already quote it. I like the book, though. It's funny, everyone gets a kick out of it, and you just can't get enough of Napolean.

      A sweeping portrait of an age, this book--the 11th and final volume in Will and Ariel Durant's Story of Civilization series--makes Napoleon its hero. The Durants, capable of switching from art to science to warfare with ease and skill, rank among the world's great popular historians. This adroitness requires some condensation: the description of Waterloo, for instance, takes up about three pages. If you want a detailed history of Napoleon's battle orders, look elsewhere, but if you want to understand the age and the man--in that order--The Age of Napoleon is a great place to begin.

      5 out of 5 stars The Eleventh Volume in The Story of Civilization! .......2004-09-02

      In this, the eleventh volume in the critically acclaimed series "The Story of Civilization," Dr. Will and Ariel Durant have compiled a masterly recount of the incredible sequence of events that led Europe out of the Enlightenment and into the Age of Democracy.

      The reader is treated to a detailed narration of: The revolution in France. The revolutionary leaders such as Robespierre. Marat. The rise of Napoleon. The fall of Napoleon. The life of Napoleon. The poetry of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron and Shelley. The philosophy of Schelling and Hegel. The music of Beethoven. And much, much more including plates and maps.

      Written to stand alone or within the landmark series, the Durants have composed a historical retelling in smooth prose which is easy to read and understand by both professional and layperson alike. In short, this book is for everyone interested in European history. A benchmark in a class of its own, I rate this text at five stars. Wonderful!

      5 out of 5 stars A great perpective.......2001-02-27

      Yes, this book presents an Anglo perspective of Napoleon and his time in Europe. Still, the work of the Durans is fantastic as it captures historical elements from sources as diverse as visual arts, philosophy, literature as well as the customs of the time. The work is also rich in research and references, presenting numerous scripts from Napoleon himself and his subordinates.

      After reading this book, I was encouraged to buy the whole collection the Durans produced and I am very happy to have done so.

      3 out of 5 stars The Age of Napoleon through the eyes on an Anglophile........2000-06-11

      Generally, the series of books written by Will and Ariel Durant is an enormous project, which the authors produced in a workman-like manner. Yes, they are pedants, and the works have a kind of lets-hurry-along flavor; a lets-get-it-all-in aura.

      The Durants are Anglophiles, and it shows here. Too much Wellington, and too many British viewpoints, which were in the 19th Century and are to this day stacked against Napoleon, in particular, and the French, in general.

      Reading this book, one gets the feeling, that the authors can hardly wait to get to the part about the Battle of Waterloo.

      Anyone interested in Napoleon -- the man, and his works -- can find more comprehensive studies by other authors.

      The Durant's writing style can sometimes be confusing to the uninitiated. They tend to string long sentences together with semicolins; using pronouns to the point of confusion for the reader.

      There is a lot of information here, but this is not a great book. It is a very broad, shallow history giving only a mild flavor, not a real taste of the "Frenchness" of the Age of Napoleon. Francophiles and fans of the Emperor should look elsewhere.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't buy a book buy a pedant.......2000-06-01

      William Durant is just a pedant who cannot appreciate a hero's greatness. Don't buy or read his books unless you are a useless pedantic fool like him with no hot blood in your vein.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the Napoleonic period.......1999-12-28

      The Durant's have done an excellent job in capturing the flavor of the era of Napoleon. The book gives you an excellent overview of military, social, religious, philosophic, and moral attitudes of the day. One should keep in mind, however, that the book is an overview and thus does not deal too deeply with any one subject. This should not be seen as a flaw however but a product of the aim of the work, to summarize the conditions during Napoleon's time. The book is easy to read and is written to be understood by the average reader. A definite must have for any French history or Napoleon buff.

      4 out of 5 stars Not a typical Napoleonic Wars book.......2006-02-27

      Rothenberg expands on the typical Napoleon book about war by concentrating on the human factor by explaining what the soldiers went through in victory and defeat.

      Rothenberg also dissects the French Army like few of his contemporaries by starting with the pre-revolutionary make-up through the advances which made Napoleon famous and victorious.

      Well written and educational, necesary as a companion to other classics as Swords Around a Throne by Elting, How Far From Austerlitz by Horne, European Diplomacy by Ross, and biographies by Markham and Schom.

      4 out of 5 stars The Art of Warfare.......2005-04-26

      Gunther Rothenberg's "The Art of Warfare in the Age of Napoleon" is a highly readable survey of the changes in the art of war during the 23-year conflict spawned by the French Revolution and the Wars of Napoleon. Despite its brevity, "The Art of Warfare" is remarkably comprehensive, addressing weapons, tactics, strategy, and supporting military services such as engineering and medical care. Rothenberg provides a short synopsis of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and commentary on the military establishments of the principal combatants.

      Rothenberg rightly devotes much of the book to the innovations of the French Army as it evolved under the necessity first of defending the Revolution and then under the hand of its martial Emperor, Napoleon I. The concept of the nation in arms made possible mass armies which often overwhelmed the small professional armies of its adversaries. Lack of training led to an emphasis on shock in battle, produced by fast moving infantry columns, massed artillery fire, and operational maneuver against the flanks and rear of opponents. Rothenberg notes the effects of a persistent French failure to build a robust supply system. French soldiers in the field were expected to forage to survive. The Army as a whole was forced to disperse to find food, and Napoleon had to rely on exquisite timing to mass his forces in time for battle. The lack of a supply train imparted operational mobility, but when foraging failed, as it did in Russia, or provoked guerrilla war, as it did in Spain, French soldiers starved or were picked off in ambush.

      The many success of the French Army prompted varying degrees of emulation by the Austrian, Prussian, Russian, and British armies. The Prussians sought most to copy the French methodology, while the British prefered to enhance the professionalism of their forces rather than build a mass army.

      Rothenberg wrote "The Art of Warfare" in 1978. Close students of the Napoleonic Wars will find a few mistakes, and the volume has a surprising number of misspellings. However, these imperfections really do not detract from what is an excellent work.

      This volume is highly recommended to the student looking for a manageable introduction to the Napoleonic Wars, and to the serious student as a superb companion volume to the longer operational-level histories. The casual reader with some background in military affairs may also find this book a worthwhile read.

      5 out of 5 stars Buy me.......2003-08-18

      I have several books titled 'Art of Warfare' covering several military history periods, and for the life of me I cannot understand why they are all so thinly bound! I wish Gunther Rothenberg had kept going, but perhaps there is only so much to say on certain topics without getting into the details of decisions made by the commanders themselves. In any case, this book is a prized part of my Napoleonic history collection, and serves as a useful complement to Elting's 'Swords around the Throne'.

      4 out of 5 stars An often cited reference.......1999-12-24

      Rothenberg's book is a highly respected source for those interested in the nuts and bolts of battle in the Napoleonic period. No maps or plates, not a general history. Often mentioned in bibliographies of more recent Napleonic works.

      5 out of 5 stars discovering the mystery of the mail room.......2006-04-27

      This is the story about a 10 year old boy named Marty, who has to write a letter to a famous person for one of his classes. Unfortunately, Marty cannot think of anyone to write to, not anyone who is alive anyway. So he decides to mail his letter to Napoleon Bonaparte. With the help of his grandfather and a mysterious mail room in his grandfather's nursing home, Marty manages to get his letter mailed...and gets a response! No one believes that he really got a letter from Napoleon, so he decides to send more letters. Marty and his best friend Russell end up sending letters to many famous dead people, such as Abraham Lincoln, Vincent Van Gogh, and the Wizard of Menlo Park himself, Thomas Edison. I love this book because there is such a mystery in the old mail room of Shady Groves Nursing Home, and because I am a history nerd who would absolutely love for this mail room to exist. I think it would be awesome to send a letter to Jim Bowie at the Alamo, or Will Bill Hitchock in the old west. This book is perfect for using in a fifth grade classroom to introduce a history lesson, because of all the great men it highlights. You could also have your own class write letters to a famous person and see if they can get a reply. Get this book for you kids, or for yourself. You will love it!!

      If you do, read Dear Napoleon, I Know Your Dead, But.... It is about a kid
      and his best friend, Russell. Russell and Marty have to figure out how Marty can write to
      famous dead people and get letters back! Would you believe your friends if they did the same? I think that everyone should read this book because it is simply great.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Authentic.......1999-10-02

      The kid in this story was different. He wanted to write to a historical figure rather than a sports star or musician--very unique for a kid's book. The book was interesting and I related to Martin because he was different than other kids. I highly reccommend this book to people who like history and have different perspectives. This was an excellent read--highly reccommended.

      5 out of 5 stars A touching read... Not what I expected!.......1999-06-16

      I noticed this book at a book fair in fifth grade, and brought it home, expecting (because of the title) a ludicrous, laugh-inducing romp through history. What I got instead was a touching, sometimes hilarious, sometimes sad book that had me fairly glowing with pleasure after I finished it.

      This is definetely a worthwhile read, and a good buy. :-)

      Book Description

      In this second volume, Albert Boime continues his work on the social history of Western art in the Modern epoch. This volume offers a major critique and revisionist interpretation of Western European culture, history, and society from Napoleon's seizure of power to 1815. Boime argues that Napoleon manipulated the production of images, as well as information generally, in order to maintain his political hegemony. He examines the works of French painters such as Jacques-Louis David and Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, to illustrate how the art of the time helped to further the emperor's propagandistic goals. He also explores the work of contemporaneous English genre painters, Spain's Francisco de Goya, the German Romantics Philipp Otto Runge and Caspar David Friedrich, and the emergence of a national Italian art.

      Heavily illustrated, this volume is an invaluable social history of modern art during the Napoleonic era.

      Stimulating and informative, this volume will become a valuable resource for faculty and undergraduates.—R. W. Liscombe, Choice
