Book Description

This book is a textbook and clinical manual on the treatment of modern Western medical diseases with Chinese medicine. By modern Western medical diseases, we mean all the disease categories of Western medicine excluding gynecology and pediatrics. By Chinese medicine, we mean standard contemporary professional Chinese medicine as taught at the two dozen provincial Chinese medical colleges in the People's Respublic of China. The two main therapeutic modalities used in the practice of this style of Chinese medicine are acupuncture-moxibustion and the internal administration of multi-ingredient Chinese medicinal formulas. Treatment plans for each disease discussed herein are given for each of these two main modalities.

5 out of 5 stars Another brilliant text from Blue Poppy.......2006-10-18

From Acupuncture Today, Sept. 2003
By Robert C. Dichiera, AP, ATC/L

Blue Poppy Press has published yet another brilliant text from co-authors Bob Flaws and Philippe Sionneau. The Treatment of Modern Western Medical Diseases with Chinese Medicine: A Textbook and Clinical Manual conveys the authors' collective 30 years of experience. Bob Flaws and Philippe Sionneau have taken 72 modern Western diseases not seen in most English-Chinese medical texts and illustrated the disease patterns and treatment protocols for each.

Like most texts in this field, the first section is devoted to basic to advanced theories of diagnosis patterns in Chinese medicine. However, unlike most texts, this initial section includes an explanation of renowned practitioners and their specific diagnosis theories not taught in most Western Chinese medical schools. These include Li Dong-Yuan's theory of yin fire, Liu Wan-Su's theory of similar transformations, and Zhu Dan-Xi's theory of the Six Depressions.

The second section of the text is the treatment formulary. The 72 subsequent chapters are arranged in alphabetical order according to the medical disease discussed. Each chapter begins with the allopathic etiology of the disease and concludes with several important remarks from a TCM perspective. The diseases are broken down into their various TCM patterns, and a treatment formulary is prescribed for each, including herbal medicines, patent remedies and acupuncture points. I found the "additions" and "subtractions" an extremely valuable reference tool to help individualize the treatments.

There is no way to "cookbook" a treatment plan that involves the use of acupuncture and herbal medicines. What this text attempts to do is present the basis for use of each different type of acupoint and herbal formulary for each diseased pattern, and allow students and practitioners alike to make their own decisions as to which will be most effective in a given clinical situation. I believe this text is an essential manual to own. The Treatment of Modern Western Medical Diseases with Chinese Medicine: A Textbook and Clinical Manual will benefit students and practitioners of both Eastern and Western medicine. I look forward to similar volumes in the near future.

Dr. Dichiera's rating: 10 out of 10

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of Clarity.......2004-02-06

There have been other books in English elaborating the Chinese medical pattern identification and treatment of biomedically-defined diseases, but none so meticulously researched and presented as this one. The writing is organized, logical, and exceptionally clear.

The introductory chapter contains one of the most lucid discussions of Li Dong-yuan's yin fire theory anywhere. This book is unique in its genre for including relevant points of yin fire theory in its discussion of the Chinese medical evaluation and treatment of more than 65 commonly-encountered biomedically-defined diseases. Practitioners and students alike will deeply appreciate its discussion of disease pathomechanisms, a subject typically glossed over by similar works.

The level of detail in both the Chinese medical and biomedical discussion of each disease is considerable, and the authors frequently make reference to recent research articles from China and from the English-speaking world.

The discussion of treatment is at a similarly high level, with a detailed prescription-modifying approach to each pattern for each disease. Both herbal medicine and acupuncture are covered, although the emphasis is clearly on herbal medicine.

One wishes that the index had received the same care and attention that was lavished on the manuscript; for example, there is an entire chapter on migraine headaches and no corresponding entry in the index. Readers may find the table of contents more useful in locating specific information.

This book should be considered a primary source for practitioners researching treatment for their patients, and a required textbook in courses on the differentiation of disease for students of Chinese medicine. It is the first English-language textbook to advance an evidence-based, yet individually responsive approach to those diseases most often encountered in outpatient clinical practice of Chinese medicine in North America. Essential reading.

5 out of 5 stars Why hasn't western medicine come this far? This book answers A LOT of questions!.......2007-07-23

It's been a couple of years since I read this book but I recall that it CHANGED MY PARENTING LIFE and I still follow the concepts in it every day. I was seeing a Chinese Medicine doctor and the treatment was helping me immensely and that doc lent me this book. When I read it I immediately began following it's advice, and my son immemdiately stopped having ear infections and hasn't had once since (almost 3 years). Before, he'd had one every 3 months. I would call this book a parenting bible. The most important parenting book I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for anyone FEEDING young children.......2001-02-09

I decided to write this book review after purchasing this book a few years ago and to later find myself purchasing it again for a friend with an infant child who is in her own struggle of how to feed her child the healthy way!! My friend was just like me....trying to do everything naturally possible for my child....but, totally confused as to the "correct" process! In today's world so many people are trying to get on the healthy path, only to find themselves in total confusion as to "how to begin" and then, to find what they thought was healthy for their child, to be working against them. Bob Flaws has clearly demonstrated that even the most healthy foods can be the most harmful to young children......however, he also explains the reasons why and how to properly prepare foods to offer young children for optimal health. My daughter is now 8 years old and through the knowledge of this book and a wonderful TCM doctor, we do not have the health problems we used to have. My child loves her "cooked" vegetables and through proper management, she has a balanced diet every day - no junk food is allowed. For birthday's we have a nice healthy dinner minus the birthday cake, and a nice trip to the beach. This book gives down to earth answers in our relationship to nature and the importance of eating the "correct" way. It is a critical book for today's failing medical society as we teach our children the importance of natural health. As I look around my community, I see parents feeding their children the most harmful foods and then they ask "Why, is my child so sick all the time"??? This book is a wake up call for America to start paying attention to their child's needs, getting back to nature the way our bodies were meant to live in harmony with - it is their birthright!

I am a student of Chinese painting and this book was recommended by our teacher as the most reliable reference book for Chinese painting. I am very pleased with this purchase since it is everything that I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Essential textbook for sumi-e and Chinese brush painters.......2005-09-27

This manual has been used for centuries in China and Japan and illustrates all the basics needed to paint in oriental style, with helpful written pointers. Be aware that the black ink illustrations were originally wood-block prints so grey tones do not translate. Particularly useful for compositional study and models of outlline figures, animals and architectural elements. For more up-to-date and in-depth instruction in the Four Gentlemen, including stroke-by-stroke illustrations, try the "Book of Bamboo", "Book of Plum", "Book of Orchid" and "Book of Chrysanthemum" by Prof I-Hsiung Ju.

5 out of 5 stars A must.......2005-02-01

Thanks to the Amazon:" look inside this book" I purchased the The Mustard Seed Garden Manual Of Painting. It is amazing how didatic and philosophical can be a text written three hundred years ago ! I could not stop reading since opened the first page: for those who paints or admires chinese pictures (or even calligraphy ) - it is really a must. I recommend to read carefully the : "look inside" because when you receive the book it will surprise you: it is much, much more than that. And, being a 640 pages book and in an almost squared form, it is also delightful to hold those messages that came from the past and is still valid today. Buy now, because if it goes out of print, for sure , you will repent to miss a Classic.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2004-01-02

The illustrations are a wonderful source of reference and inspiration for the beginning and intermediate painter. There are plenty of examples to get you started if you're thinking of trying something new and aren't quite sure how to approach it. The sections I find myself using all the time are trees and human elements.

I learned from a teacher when I was living in Japan, so the bad translation doesn't bother me. I use this book for the images, which is what you really should buy it for. If you want something more of step-by-step instruction for the very beginner, this book isn't it.

Book Description

Since publication of the first edition in 1998, Chinese History: A Manual has become an indispensable guide to researching the civilization and history of China. Updated through January 2000, the second edition discusses some 4,300 primary, secondary, and reference works, an increase of 1,500 titles over the first edition. The temporal coverage has been expanded to include the Republican period; sections on nonverbal salutations, weights and measures, money, and furniture have been added; the chapters on language, etymology, people, geography, chronology, warfare, leishu, food, and the Chinese world order have been thoroughly revised; and the subject index has been enlarged to include 2,500 technical terms.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Peerless Resource for Chinese Historiography.......2002-11-30

Wilkinson's 'Chinese History: A Manual' is an essential volume on the bookshelf of any serious Chinese historiographer or scholar of Chinese history. Since the publication of the first edition, this book has very much become a standard reference for Chinese history. Note, though, that this is not a textbook on Chinese history, although one can certainly learn a great deal about Chinese history from it. It serves better as a handbook on Chinese history, an informative reference one consults to discover resources for the study of divers aspects of Chinese history.

The first section provides an excellent introduction to Chinese history, and the methods of Chinese historiography. Topics such as language, geography, demography, chronology, statistics, etc., are introduced, and reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopaedias are discussed in some detail. This section provides much of the groundwork necessary for study of Chinese history.

The remainder of the book is devoted to the description of the primary and secondary sources of historical documents, categorising them by genre, era and topic. Some 4,300 sources and references are described, from pre-Qin periods to the modern era, making the book an excellent first-port-of-call for identifying historical texts and documents. Wilkinson's work is especially helpful because the resources are not merely presented as lists, but their context is described, and often, some evaluation of the quality, worth, reliability, ubiquity, etc., is presented. Difficulties and obstacles encountered in research are mentioned, and solutions are often suggested.

This is a revised version of the 1998 edition, enlarged to include republican period. An already excellent manual was improved upon, and there is little I can say to criticise this edition. The book is physically well bound and the print is clear and of a good size: no magnifying glass is necessary. One particularly laudable feature of this book is that where English is employed for terms particular to Chinese culture or history, the Chinese term is given throughout, and the name of texts and sources are always given in Chinese. Moreover, romanisation is generally accompanied by Chinese characters, elminating the often frustrating guesswork involved in trying to figure out the characters corresponding to a romanised phrase. My only complaint is that, although Pinyin romanisation is used consistently, the tone marks are generally omitted.

In short, then, I have nothing but praise for Wilkinson's work. It is an indispensible guide to the study of Chinese historiography, and constitutes an excellent resource for anyone at all interested in Chinese history. Although written as a handbook for research, I have found the book suited to casual browse, and I often use it as a coffee-book table: I open it to a random page, and, more often than not, I find something that strikes my fancy and piques my interest. All in all, this book is a valuable resource seldom to be met with elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable guide to all aspects of traditional China.......1998-11-10

This is an annotated resarch guide and bibliography, as described by the publisher, but has much more: introductions to the sources available for the writing of traditional Chinese history (up to 1911); shrewd evaluations of reference and research tools involved; explanation of how the study of the field developed; brief summaries of the state of research on a wide variety of topics, including:origins of Chinese characters, history of Chinese food, how to handle dates and chronology; how to find out where places are and who people are... well, you get the idea. The MANUAL is useful not only for primary research, but also for finding articles and secondary references on many topics (my own bibliography, CHINA (Clio: World Bibliography Series, 1997) lists mainly books). The term "Manual" in Wilkinson's title really describes it, i.e. something which must be "at hand" for anyone working in Chinese history, and a "must" for libraries.

    Book Description

`Phags-pa Chinese is the earliest form of the Chinese language to be written in a systematically devised alphabetic script. It is named after its creator, a brilliant thirteenth-century Tibetan scholar-monk who also served as political adviser to Kublai Khan. `Phags-pa's invention of an alphabet for the Mongolian language remains an extraordinarily important accomplishment, both conceptually and practically. With it he achieved nothing less than the creation of a unified script for all of the numerous peoples in the Mongolian empire, including the Central Asian Turks and Sinitic-speaking Chinese.

`Phags-pa is of immense importance for the study of premodern Chinese phonology. However, the script is difficult to read and interpret, and secondary materials on it are scattered and not easily obtained. The present book is intended as a practical introduction to `Phags-pa Chinese studies and a guide for reading and interpreting the script. It consists of two parts. The first part is an introductory section comprising four chapters. This is followed by a glossary of `Phags-pa Chinese forms and their corresponding Chinese characters, together with pînyîn and stroke order indexes to those characters. The first introductory chapter outlines the invention of the `Phags-pa writing system, summarizes the major types of material preserved in it, and describes the historical and linguistic contexts in which this invention occurred. Following chapters detail the history of `Phags-pa studies, the alphabet and its interpretation, and the salient features of the underlying sound system represented by the script, comparing it with those of various later forms of Chinese that have been recorded in alphabetic sources.

A Handbook of `Phags-pa Chinese will be of special interest to Chinese historical phonologists and scholars concerned with the history and culture of China and Central Asia during the Yuan period (1279-1368 A.D.).

    Book Description

Chinese martial arts masters of the past created special training manuals with text and images—sometimes appearing in the illustrations themselves—and these manuals now provide an invaluable glimpse back in time that allow readers to see how various martial arts were practiced. Covering the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, and the Republican Period, this in-depth survey presents 30 masters and their books, placing them in the context of Chinese culture and history. Along with biographical portraits of these masters, the book covers the history of the manuals, Chinese martial arts historians, the history of Taiwanese martial arts, how Chinese martial artists made their livings, the Imperial military exams, the place of the Shaolin Temple in Chinese martial arts history, and much more. Illustrated with hundreds of photographs and drawings from the manuals themselves, the book offers a multifaceted portrait of Chinese martial arts and their place in Chinese culture.

    5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2007-09-21

This book is a relief in todays world of Martial Arts liars, thieves, and charlatans. With a field that fosters making claims of magic and mystical powers, or in the least allowing the students or practitioners to go unfettered and run rampant with thoughts of Hollywood, Hong Kong, or Wu Xia Kung Fu this is a breath of fresh air. If you want solid groundwork for dispelling the myths and mysticisms of Chinese Martial Arts then this is the book for you. Well researched and full of great references, Mr. Kennedy offers an oft-times 'no holds barred' spotlight on an industry, sub-culture, phenomenon that has thrived in the shadows for too long. It's about time a book like this was published!

5 out of 5 stars A book for every teacher who wants to go beyond the legends.......2007-06-07

It happens people think this book is the summa of the Chinese Kung Fu Manuals. Wrong.
This book analyzes the huge work done in Taiwan from the Lion pub on reissuing old CMA manuals in their original print. Some of them are today also available in English thanks to Tim Cartmell. The high value of this book is on analyzing the history and development of CMA by using documentation and not legends. The high value of this book is to tell the story of CMA historians as well as CMA master and famous people.
The way they lived, the way the got money...
Then the authors go trough the several manual by analyzing the content related to the time and environment when they were published.
Also exciting is the analysis of the different manual organization and the didactics related to the books: form the "hammering the back" body conditioning to the first schedule for drills. This book enlightens a reality a lot of practitioners wouldn't like to see by making more human and real. A book I find very exciting to read and I strongly advice to every western master who seriously want to know something more than legends about the CMA.

3 out of 5 stars For people who prefer reading to fighting.......2007-04-10

If you're mostly interested in the practice of martial arts, this book will be of only marginal value.*

If you find books about martial arts, and the history of their development, intrinsically interesting, then this is your book.

    * (There is one exception: The off-hand revelation at the very end of the last page regarding the hand techniques of western boxing. I was stunned!)

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but too short and incomplete........2006-11-09

Fairly interesting introduction of various literary works of Ming dynasty to republican-era martial artists, which include short bios as well as fairly rare photographs. However the book seem too short and much less comprehensive than it could've been, concerning how vast the subject is. What could've been nice would be including selected direct translations of the various texts that was showcased.

More disapointedly was the lack of attention paid to southern Chinese systems compared to the Northern/Internal systems. Only a mere 2 pages or so are given to Hung Gar's Lam Sai Wing, the only representation of the southern Chinese martial arts in the whole book.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great........2006-03-23

This book is a must have for anyone with an interest in Chinese martial arts. There is a lot of good information here, some good stories, and some great pictures. Unfortunately, this book is also very frustrating. It has all the great things just mentioned, and it takes the genre of English-language books on Chinese martial arts history in a welcome departure from the usual. However, the book presents itself as almost academic, and in this aspiration it falls on its face. The call for scholarship in martial arts writing is well received by this reader, but the authors do not set an inspiring example. One glaring omission is the complete lack of citation. There is not even a bibliography, despite the fact that the bulk of the work is a series of book reviews. This lack of citation is frustrating for one who would be interested in further inquiry. The presentation therefore fails as academic, and rests in the "wanna-be" category. Better editing -- in English and in ESPECIALLY IN THEIR USE OF PINYIN -- would also help this otherwise rare example of a commendable book on this fantastic subject.

        Book Description

This volume deals with the world of carpenters and joiners in late Imperial China, discussing both the technical and the religious and ritual aspects of building. It uses as its point of departure a unique and hitherto unused source: the fifteenth-century carpenter's manual Lu Ban jing. The first part of the book examines building materials, the life of labourers and craftsmen, and the process of building a house. Subjects included are the choice of favourable measurements, the ritual of raising the ridge pole, and the complete, annotated translation of the Lu Ban jing, preceded by a bibliographic essay. The sections on furniture construction are especially important for the art historian. The book is finely illustrated with more than eighty original drawings and includes a facsimile of the extremely rare, richly illustrated earliest edition of the Lu Ban jing, dating from ca. 1600.
