Size is not everything Amber..........2007-05-02
It's the amount of content inside the book. The SH 21-74 Ranger Handbook is rich in content and is a useful addition to any man's library.
DRY BECAUSE IT HAS TO BE...........2006-03-01
This and previous versions of this manual have been rated poorly by civilians since their inception. I find this to be unfair because they are failing to rate the manual on the proper foundations. One looking to buy this manual must take into account several facts:
This was not intended for civilian leisure reading.
Almost half of this book is extremely dry because it contains step by step instructions for written and verbal communication (Fragmentary Orders, Warning Orders, etc). This is essential because properly maintained lines of communication are crucial in the military.
The remaining material in this book is dry because it is 100% matter of fact. The men who rely on this book for day to day use do not have the time to read through off-topic commentary.
This being said, I doubt many civilians will enjoy reading this manual. There are probably books out there which provide much of the same material and would make for a more enjoyable read. However, I strongly recommend this manual to any military personnel in combat situations. This manual is small enough to use as a pocket reference, but the text is large enough to read. Although not all personnel require this material every day, one never knows when the knowledge could come into use. If or when it is used, this manual will save lives.
Manuals covering similar important subjects:
Map Reading and Land Navigation (FM 21-26)
Survival (FM 21-76)
Special Forces Handbook (ST 31-180)
Special Forces Operational Techniques (FM 31-20)
It's not the size, it's the content........2004-12-20
This book is the newest out and very hard to find else where.
The Military content is up to date and is what the troops are using right now. The book is made small still with very good print and pictures so you can take it into the field. Glad to know our military does not buy things just because of the size.
This book is far better than the other ranger books in print.
Very Small for $20. .......2004-12-16
I bought this because it is supposed to be the newest version. I paid 19.99 for it, and thought my husband would get a kick out of it, since he's always going on about how "cool" the rangers are. Frankly, it was a little disapointing. Not what I expect out of a 20 dollar book. It has some charts in it, and I would say its about 5inches by 3inches. IF this book was under $10 I would have given it a higher rating, because thats what it looks like it's worth.

Every car owner should have one.......2007-04-11
Delivery to Norway in time as promised. This is a great book for the do it yourself car owner. Everything is easily explained and illustrated, and even if you don't intend to do it yourself you can diagnose problems and understand what the mechanic is doing. It will help you controll that the right thing is done, and that the mechanic is not fooling you. I have a Chilton Manual for each car I own, and could not be without them!
Absolutely HORRIBLE manual.......2004-01-28
******One-star is NOT LOW ENOUGH*******
Received book as Christmas gift couple years ago. I have a 1998 Explorer, and I continue to be frustrated by this sorry excuse for a manual.....erroneous info, and complete lack of depth. As I found out late last night, something as simple as documenting a fuse-box is complete garbage.
I've also owned Haynes manuals, and seem to have had better luck with them.
I can't imagine anyone who would be pleased with this manual, unless you require instructions on how to top up the wiper fluid.
1991-99 Ford Explorer Repair Manual.......2003-05-10
In section 6 the information for the windshield wiper motor is not applicable to my 1996 explorer. Also, there is no information about how to remove / replace the windshield washer spray nozzles. Or how to remove the cowling along the base of the windshield.
Chilton's has lost touch with reality........2002-04-25
I purchased this book for needed factual, accurate information of which I got neither. I wanted to replace the lower ball joints on my '99 Ranger, so I bought this book. Take note: on page 8-4 it states specifically that the 1998-99 Ranger does NOT have coil springs. This of course is hogwash as my '99 most definitely has coil springs. In addition, it states on page 8-8 that the ball joint is an integral part of the lower control arm. This, too, is complete hogwash. Please be advised that this book is RIFE with erroneous information - including any pictures contained therein. I have lost all faith in Chilton's ability to present the correct information on ANY automobile.
Computer Module? This book only lists ONE!.......2000-12-12
There are several computer modules on my ford explorer. I bought this book to list them, and guess what, It lists just one. And its detailed instructions on how to access that module was "remove dash to expose computer module" and no diagrams. I dont know about you, but behind MY dash is a Buttload of stuff behind my dash, and not only that, but my dash comes apart in sections, so just what section I wonder?
Useless! Breaks it covers fairly well, good thing that the explorer, ranger, and mountaineer all use the same breaking system(cough cough)cause it lists just one way.
Good thing the electronic diagrams are the same for all the vehicle types(cough cough) for all listed vehicles from 1991 to 1999 as it onlyu lists one vehicle schematic, otherwise Id be lost.
Good thing there was a mechanic within calling distance to put back together everything I ripped out per the chiltons book, otherwise Id be walking.......
Book Description
Awesome in its vastness and beauty, the Grand Canyon is unique in all the world. And all the world wants to visit there-which can lead to delay, discomfort, and disappointment for the uninformed who arrive at the same time as everyone else.
Those armed with The Grand Canyon Handbook, however, will be wise to all the tricks for having the best possible time at the park. They'll know when to go, what to bring, what to see, and how to see it. They'll be properly equipped for a safe visit. They'll have a matchless grasp of all the facts, from how the canyon was formed down to the closest place to rent camping gear. There's even a table of sunrise/sunset times, so readers won't miss any meteorological light shows unless they want to.
This detailed and engaging guide, narrated by a seasoned cartoon ranger named Jack, includes illuminating notes on the park's flora, fauna, history, and future prospects. The question-and-answer format gives the facts without a lot of searching. A quick-reference section offers, among other things, a telephone directory, guide to area resources, backpacker's checklist, lists of outfitters and transportation companies, and an overview of regional conservation and educational programs.

Excellent Resource.......2007-01-10
Book is excellent. It's full of great tips and information, and I really liked the format and informal style of the book. I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone thinking of traveling to the Grand Canyon.
Paradise Found on a Grand canyon Tour.......2004-07-07
The Grand Canyon Handbook: an Insider's Guide to the Park, was quite helpful. I searched all over the internet for grand canyon tour information, and i must say paradisefoundtours.com was by far the best. I signed up for a grand canyon tour and a hoover dam tour with them. The book and the website went hand in hand. We had a great time!
It's not just a big hole in the ground.......2002-11-18
The way the books of this series work is that they took a guide for new rangers in Yosemite with the 100 or so most frequently asked questions, and wrote their own answers for each park. So in each book the questions are very similar but the answers might be very different.
It's a great format because it makes for easy reading beforehand, but it's also quick as a reference when you're there because they're arranged in an intelligent order. There's also a huge reference section at the end with lists, copies of permit forms, and so forth. So the thing to do is read the FAQ before you leave but bring the book and refer to it once you're there.
Before I went I really wasn't sure how long we'd want to stay or even if there was really anything to do other than look at the canyon. As it turns out there's a ton of things to do - ruins, great hiking, sunsets, stargazing, and we spent a lot more time there than I would have thought. Without this book either I wouldn't have realized this stuff existed (the park service doesn't exactly promote the nearby native ruins, but they're cool) or I would have scheduled way too little time.

Interesting Overview.......2001-08-07
This guide provides an interesting overview to the Grand Canyon. Parents will find this guide useful in sharing this awesome wonder with their children. However, this guide falls short as a vacation planner.

Great use of page space.......2000-06-14
This book provides a great look inside the persona of a Ranger. It's a great reference for Role-Playing and a handy guide for a few new proficiencies, skills, and items. In addition to being a great guide through the life of a ranger, this handbook also features some of my favorite art work.
Wonderful book for colorful characters.......2000-06-09
The PHBR (Player's Handbook Reference) series is one of the most highly-regarded, and yet much-maligned, series of supplements ever created. Each sourcebook takes one of the races or classes of the AD&D game, and adds to it huge amounts of new detail - new equipment, spells, kits (sub-classes), lore, new rules, etc. The problem is that the players love these so much that the DM often feels compelled to buy into the rest of the series - an expensive proposition! Fortunately, these works were "reprinted" in the excellent AD&D Core Rules CD-ROM. This one includes everything you need to know to design and play a Ranger - chapters include requirements, level advancement, spell use, weapons and armor, tracking, animal empathy, natural lore, strongholds, followes, kits (such as the Explorer, Falconer, and Giant Killer), proficiencies, new spells and magic items, equipment, role-playing, religion, forgatherings, and more! An indispensible tome.
Disappointed, Good for higher level Rangers.......1999-10-20
The book is well organized. Writing style is reader friendly. However, over 60% of books is of interest only to players running Rangers above 7th level. I bought the book because I knew nothing about Rangers, and wanted more information for running a beginning level character than found in the Player's Handbook, or the the Skills & Powers book.
Excellent work.......1999-09-17
The book is excellent, I have always been a fan of Rangers( all of my most successfull characters have been of this class) I think it is the outdoorsman in me that draws me to them like a magnet. The book was put together well, I especially liked the entries about forgatherings and the times of the year they fall under, another thing I respected about the forgethering entrys was that they left you only with a vauge impression of how they opporate, leaving DM's such as myself with complete artistic freedome, It's a must buy for anyone even considering playing a Ranger of any type
Adds a lot to an Already Strong Character.......1999-02-17
Excellent book with a lot to add for anybody that is playing a ranger or wants to play one. Some very strong kits (pathfinder, stalker, mountain man, etc) and a few week ones (what's up with the plant ranger?) Also recommended for a DM that wants to add an interesting ranger NPC into play.

The Fuel System.......2000-01-17
Most sections are the same in content, they tell you how to take it out and put it back. None tell you how to check it, or even test the system. The details on replacement are great. I know there are a million ways to test parts, but a general overview of how to test them would be extremely useful. I replaced the sending unit 3x's because I didn't know you COULD test it.

Great Read.......2007-07-05
Definitely interesting, though it's a dry read. It's worth a buy simply because it's so fascinating if you're a military buff or a paintball buff.
Small for a Reason.......2006-03-23
I went to Ranger School in 1973. After that the SF Q course. This book, so everyone knows, is small because it was not meant to be read in an armchair and sit in a library. It is the book that fits as the sole field reference book for a Ranger or Infantryman in general, in his BDU pocket. It is pocket sized for that reason only. Real Rangers and Infantrmen who would carry it to the field would put it inside a ziplock baggy to keep it dry and clean and stuff it in his rucksack or pocket and consider it a luxury item! I have about 6 or 7 editions/versions of this over my 30 year career. The book is printed by the print shop at Fort Benning, Georgia, and each Ranger school student gets a copy, and you can pick up a copy for free at the Fort Benning post publications center. You can also buy copies off base for a premium. The print of the Fort Benning issue copies is of course small, but very readable. And they are stapled together. Anything else is probably some publisher taking a copy, photocoping or camera copying the handbook, putting the resolutions in a computer, and printing their own version. The originals are printed under the USAIS (U.S. Army Infantry School) of which the U.S. Army Ranger School is a part of. This is a book that every member of the 75th Ranger Regiment )(the unit involved when someone says Army Rangers did this or that...). Going to Ranger school is not the same thing as being in the 75th Ranger Regiment, though nearly all members of the 75th RgrRegt have been to Ranger School, or will go as soon as they get a school slot. In the 75th all leaders of any rank have been to Ranger School. Only some of the newest privates who have volunteered to go, but not yet had a school slot have not been. Ranger School is just he "basics" of Ranger training for those in the 75th Ranger Regiment. Ranger school trained soldiers are common and in many units of the Army. The 75th Regt has a very elite and challenging work and training ethic befitting who they are and the missions given to them. This handbook is not their sole reference, not even close...FM 7-8, FM 7-10, FM 7-20, etc, etc are also their guiding books...but this is a handbook every Ranger has and often carries. If for no other reason that it is a lot simplier to look up the calculations, placement, and detonation for a specific demolitions charge for a specific target than try to memorize the tables. LOL The rest of the stuff in the book is trained on so throughly every Ranger pretty much could recite it, and more importantly, implement it when under fire in combat, automatically without hesitation and a second thought. Interested civilians might find this interesting. The handbook is a compilation of bits and pieces of information available in many other Army references (Field Manuals, Training Bulletins, etc) but is gathered together in the Ranger Handbook so it is in one small and useful resource.
A pocket-sized look inside an elite military organization.......2005-06-29
This is a great document. The editors distilled an incredible amount of information about being not only an infantryman, but an elite infantryman into a book about the same size as a copy of Reader's Digest.
And it begins well, with Major Robert Rogers's original admonitions to his troopers ("Standing Orders, Rogers' Rangers") when they were fighting in the French and Indian War.
To quote from the editors' notes:
"Ranger techniques and methods were an inherent characteristics of the frontiersmen in the colonies, but Major Rogers was the first to capitalize on them and organize them into a permanently organized fighting force. His "Standing Orders" were written in the year 1759. Even though they were over 200 years old, they apply just as well to Ranger operations conducted on today's battlefield."
And the Standing Orders themselves:
"1. Don't forget nothing.
2. Have your musket clean as a whistle, hatched scoured, sixty rounds powder and ball, and be ready to march at a minute's warning.
3. When you're on the march, act the way you would if you were sneaking up on a deer. See the enemy first.
4. Tell the truth about what you see and what you do. There is an Army depending on us for correct information. You can lie all you please when you tell other folks about the Rangers, but don't never lie to a Ranger or officer.... "
and so on, for a total of 19 standing orders.
The rest of the book (the part Major Rogers DIDN'T write) is more grammatical, but no less down-to-earth, mostly. Lots of information about how to be a combat leader, and detailed lists of lots of things (probably not everything by a long shot) expected of a Ranger, lists of standard operating procedures of our Army's elite infantry troops - even down to informal advice on when to set booby traps and how to rig dipole antennas for long-range radios.
What's so great about this book? It allows the reader to more fully understand the way of life of troops who train so hard that many trainees don't complete the Ranger course. And in this day and age that is no bad thing, because in Afghanistan and Iraq and places we'll probably never learn the names of, people who must read, mark and inwardly digest what's in this book defend us and destroy our enemies.
The Ranger Handbook got 4 stars because it is an authentic example of a rare genre, a military training document that transmits knowledge from elite warrior to apprentice elite warrior with no bureaucrats or technical writers in between. As such, it's a reasonably good, candid peek at the training of a member of an elite military organization.
Perhaps lots of military organizations have books of this sort, but the US Army Rangers seem to be the only organization whose informal in-house document is widely circulated outside its parent organization without a lot of fiddling around with the text, changes to the art, etc. Any book purporting to be "The Official US Armed Forces (whatever)" probably isn't.
NOT THE MOST UP TODATE VERSION.......2004-10-23
On Amazon this book is not the most up to date version as they the publisher says. Ranger SH-76 book isbn number 097590096X is the most current.
Best book on the subject, ever!.......2004-09-17
Yes, and I mean it. This is the best book, on the subject, ever....if you've got or are part of an army. Oh, and you've got to be at war too. Of course, I suspect this book might be useful, perhaps even very useful, for those involved (I mean really involved) in paintball competitions or even for those on the fringe who practice this stuff out in the sticks preparing for "the rev" . However, for practical purposes I'd suggest looking elsewhere. It is compact (small w/small print too)to the point of impracticality and for most it doesn't address true to life survival practices.
Book Description
This handbook offers the techniques and tactics that make Army Rangers the best soldiers in the world. These highly-trained, easily-deployable, and widely-skilled infantrymen specialize in airborne assault, raids, recovery of personnel and equipment, and airfield seizure, among other difficult and dangerous missions. Drawing from over two centuries of bloody lessons learned in special operations combat
, this guide gives modern soldiers the best advice possible. In straightforward language and a no-frills style, it covers deception, stealth, communications, escape and evasion, ambush operations, perimeter defense, counterintelligence, and much more. Handy and concise, this manual was designed so
Rangers could easily carry it
into the field. Now it is the ultimate resource for anyone who wants to know how Rangers think and work.
Customer Reviews:
Good softcover version of the Ranger Handbook.......2007-10-12
Just recently purchased this book and have gone through it a few times already. The print is kinda small and it is definitely not something you would want to take out on the field, but overall I consider it to be a great supplement to FM 7-8. This may be a harder book to read if you are not familiar with basic U.S. military terms.
Must have!.......2007-07-13
I bought this book hoping to learn as much as I could about military tactics and operations. I was very satisfied by the ranger handbook. It covers a lot of topics in great detail. Just a word of caution: this book is obviously meant for the military and is very dry. Not that it's a problem, but don't expect this handbook to be an easy read. It assumes that you have some existing knowledge of military terms and procedures. Overall it was an excellent book.
Disregard the previous reviewers!.......2007-06-18
Not sure which book the previous reviewer is writing about, but this is the most up-to-date Ranger Handbook available, includes great art work and excellent information. I have looked at the version available from Pentagon Publishing for almost twice the price and the text is EXACTLY the same. Don't throw your money away.
Information not that good........2007-06-14
Not very well put together, I don't think it's from the Army?????
Not the Army's manual.......2007-06-14
This book was not put together by the Rangers that for sure. Also a ture military manaul does not have to make the cover look like an advertisement.
There is a reason why this book is so cheap.
Customer Reviews:
Such Fun !!.......2005-06-23
What the Preppie Handbook did for the Northeast; The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook does for London. This book really made light of our English cousins strange habits across the pond.
A riotous read !!
A Permanent Coffee Table Book.......2002-03-16
This book is a riotous spillage (in a reserved British kind of way) of amusing anecdotes, rules and instructions for life, for aspiring sloanes, or anyone wanting to recognise them or poke fun at them. It takes a brisk, light-hearted trek through every aspect of Henry & Caroline's lifestyle from birth to death, describing their conception of 'what really matters', much of which they derive from the nearby royalty (Buckingham Palace not being very far from Sloane Square) and the need to be a part of the establishment.
This would include (quote from the front cover) "Why it really matters to * WEAR navy blue * EAT jelly with a fork * READ Dick Francis and the FT [ie. the Financial Times] * GIGGLE in bed * CRY when you sing carols * NOT CRY at funerals" ... " * KILL salmon * DRINK seriously * PUT the 'Great' into Britain and the 'Hooray' into Henry and LIVE IN THE COUNTRY (or, failing that, Kensington Square)"
The text is mixed up liberally with all kinds of off-the-wall photographs, diagrams, cartoons, rhymes, and lists, appropriate to the popular London style magazine 'Harpers & Queen', and is a solid 150 pages of reasonably small print.
One of my favourite sections details table manners. Eg: "Fish Knives. Sloanes make a joke about not owning these. They're not supposed to - the Georgians didn't - but many do, because Sloane fortunes were _Victorian_ fortunes. _Rule relaxed_. (N.B. The Great Sloane Question: Does the Queen have fish knives? Answer: No.)"
At its core however, is a detailed, genuine description of who sloanes really are and how they live - their insistence on perfect grammer, exactly which "non-U" words to avoid, the games they play, how to behave in social situations, and so on, which can be taken for fact as the book was written by 2 sloanes, and might educate the most casual of readers.
My writing style here is probably not doing it justice - the book is quite simply very funny, and was a bestseller in its day. You only have to search the internet to find how many fans it has. Admittedly it does appear dated now (since 1982 - especially the 25 pages on fashionable clothes & where to buy them!), but has lost little of its humour. The fashions may have changed, but the people haven't.
I discovered it in a charity shop 12 months ago, and have been _so_very_amused_ that it hasn't left my coffee table since!
sloane rangers unite.......2000-07-07
For all of you who have read the Official Preppy Handbook, this book highlights their British cousins, the Sloane Rangers. It details everything from what to wear to who you can talk to based on what they're wearing, from attending the proper schools to how to get your kids into the proper schools. WHY do some books go out of print?

More of a question than a review.......2002-04-16
I'm thinking about buying this book because I own a 2000 Ford Ranger, code-named J97, built in Thailand for sale throughout the world except North America.
Could it be that Mr Gow found the manual inaccurate because the US Ranger is a totally different vehicle from the Mazda-based Ranger that the rest of us use?
Inaccurate.......2002-01-16
The first need I had for information from my Haynes Ford Ranger manual was to locate a fuse in my 1999 Ranger XLT. The fuse diagram is wrong. No corrections are available at the Haynes website.

Customer Reviews:
book is as bad as many parts of the truck design.......2007-08-05
Just bought 1992 Ranger from neighbor; shouldn't have let my wife & a pretty paint job talk me into it - against my better judgement. The vehicle has many inadequacies/design flaws & the book does too. It is pathetic on electrical, body/bed, etc, etc & not remotely upto the quality of Haynes manuals from years past. Pictures, paper quality, line drawings, misleading text & a devastating lack of completeness are notable for a start. If you have the bad luck to own one of these vehicles w/fairly many miles on it, don't compound your problems by buying this book

You really wanted to figure it out yourself didn't you?.......2006-08-07
We have a 1986 Ford Ranger 2.0L.
Now if we had a bronco, or maybe a later model ranger the book might be helpful but as it is it just eeks out a blurry idea of what you need to do.
I got it because I needed to fix a clutch. Not much help.
It even gives completley erroneous "helpful" information.
Let me give you one example.
When you need to remove the flywheel it suggests that if it turns you can place a screwdriver in the starter opening to hold it. Nice, but there is no starter opening because that is part of the clutch housing and therefore is laying on the ground next to you. You can still put the screwdriver there if you want but other than being a good holder it will not help you with your work :)
At other times it gives completely incorrect information on disassembly of parts while completely ignoring the 1985-1987 models in other key areas.
I suggest trying a chilton or some other book.
Get the real Ford Shop Manual........2002-10-15
This is a basic repair manual. For example, if your wanting to work on the transmission you turn to that chapter and read something like "do not attempt to repair a transmission. This is beyond the scope of the average home mechanic". Well, isn't that the reason you buy a repair manual in the first place? Your much better off to order the Ford Automotive Manual for you year of Bronco II. It is the standard by which the Ford mechanics work from. The Haynes manual is just this side of being a joke.
PS. It does have nice pictures however...
If you only have one, get this one..........2001-11-04
I also own both this and the analogous Chilton manual and I have to say that the Haynes is by far the more accessible: The drawings and photographs are clearer, the instructions are better written, and the seperation of the information regarding the different engines is better. Also, the general maintenance (oil change, lube, and tune up) information is much better.
The Chilton manual, on the other hand, has extensive tables of torque listings, includes Ford part numbers in the drawings, and has factory-style detail regarding the catalyst.
On balance, these two are complementary. Unfortunately, not even both of these in concert are exhaustive: there are simply some details that are not covered. If anyone has a better manual please let me know.
Regarding the electircal schematics comment from previous:
The total system is cut up into several sections and moving between the sections may be tricky (if not impossible), but, again, the Haynes is more clearly labeled.
Disclaimer: I have not yet used either manual for a major job.
Not For Electrical Problems.......2000-04-02
For anyone hoping to find good electrical schematics, this is not the right book. I cannot trace the horn circuit, for example. In addition, I have a failed gas gauge. There is nothing in the book that discusses how to fix this problem. As with some other books, there is a lot of info on how to completely overhaul an engine - but not enough on more minor repairs.
