Customer Reviews:
Excellent stories by a Marine about our troops in combat.......2006-06-27
This book is a series of snapshots in time covering the exploits of Marines and Soldiers in combat. Since it is written by a Marine, the stories are told from their perspective as opposed to being filtered by the media.
It is a positive portrayal of the events in Iraq. Although the author does insert some political statements into his narrative, his views are not all that different from many of the troops he writes about.
If you support the troops, or know one, and you want to understand what their life is like...you will love this book. If you do not support the troops and/or the only one you have ever met was an actor playing one on a Hollywood screen set...you will hate this book.
Great.......2005-05-02
This is a great book. It gets you right in with the action and keeps you reading. What is amazing is that it is real reality and not fiction. Lots of little details are thrown in at the appropriate times, for information and education. Really easy to read and also easy to read in small sections at a time.
Great read.......2004-10-17
Amazing first hand view of our Marines and soldiers in the field. Easy read (even for those without military experience). God bless our American heroes!
War Stories: Operation Iraqi Freedom .......2004-08-31
I received the book on time. Although I bought the book used, it looked brand-new. I was very satisfied with my purchase experience.
How things have changed.......2004-06-02
Being a combat veteran of an earlier era I found Col. North's book a fascinating read on how warfare is waged in this new age of high tech and high media exposure. Unlike steril fact books, this gives you the perspective of the infantrymen who are on the ground, dealing with it every day. I have handed this book off to several of my buddies, who have also been "out of the loop" for a number of years, telling them it's good look at how things REALLY were in Iraq vs. the tainted picture portrayed by the media.
I have not always been a big fan of Col. North's but know first-hand that he will tell it like it is, regardless of how unpopular his message may be. That, in my view, makes him a credible and valuable author, and this, a valuable testament to the men and women serving us in Iraq.
Book Description
As an embedded Fox News correspondent during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Oliver North witnessed first hand the courage and spirit of the men and women of America's armed forces.
North crafts an intensely personal foreword in A Greater Freedom: Stories of Faith from Operation Iraqi Freedom, a moving tribute to those who put their lives on the line for one another, as well as the Iraqi people. Told by Sara Horn, whose reporting took her aboard the USS Harry S. Truman during the height of the conflict, the stories offer a rare glimpse into the spiritual side of the battlefield.

A True American Hero.......2007-02-03
Oliver North is one of our most undervalued American Heroes! He stood up to Congress and supported his President; in time showing the Soviet Union that we wouldn't be weakened internally.
Every television show or book he's involved with shows his intellect and understanding of America's fighting men and women! A must read book, but better yet to have in your library!!
NWO punk.......2006-01-08
Oliver North and friends helped arm the fundamentalist mullahs of IRAN back in the 80s. The fact that North is not locked up is a testament to the high level of corruption the U.S. government is bathed in. This guy should turn in his uniform. He was interviewed on Alex Jones awhile back and dodged questions on the scandal. He just wanted to promote his ghost written garbage books.
Hoo-Rah!!!.......2005-10-30
I loved it, it was a very moving experience. The photos were excellenet and the stories that went along with them were very touching and inspirational.
An excellent work.
AWESOME!!.......2005-01-07
This is a beautiful book. I keep buying more copies so I can give to others. This is such a touching, soul-moving story of God's protection to a Marine Batallion who put their faith and trust where it could not fail. The experiences of these soldiers will 'blow you away'!
Wonderful book!.......2004-08-18
Beautiful pictures and encouraging stories. Well-worth reading. In this book, several soldiers share the stories of their Christian faith in action during the war in Iraq. It was very interesting to see the roles Christians played during the war.
Book Description
Operation Iraqi Freedom marked a new era in television war coverage. On-the-spot reporting by journalists, photographers, and cameramen captured combat in ways that are nothing less than historic. Sharing the triumphs, tragedies, and daily routines of the soldiers, viewers crouched in the trenches, felt the vibrations of bomb explosions, tasted sands borne on fierce desert winds. We were there -- embedded among the troops, eyewitnesses to the horror of battle. Historic television. Historic journalism. NBC news captured it all and was the acknowledged leader among all the network and cable news organizations covering the Iraqi war. This book + DVD package written and produced by NBC News presents a chronological narrative of reporting from the field supplemented by interviews and anchored broadcasts from Qatar, Kuwait, and the United States. The book includes a Foreword by Tom Brokaw, an Introduction by an NBC military expert, and a special dedication to fallen colleague David Bloom. Thousands of hours of images and words have been molded into a concise, eloquent summary of the historic events of the conflict, further enhanced by the photographic and video record. The DVD contains approxiamately 2 hours of live coverage of the war broadcast by NBC News, MSNBC, and CNBC.
Customer Reviews:
The best picture book about the 2003 War with Iraq........2006-06-12
Of all the picture books about the 2003 War with Iraq, this is probably the best. It has a little more meat than the other books, and the book goes into detail from the GI's perspective. I have read a number of these books, and this is perhaps the best. All of these books have great pictures, but there is little writing of substance in each of them. This one has a little more traction and substance.
Several pages were devoted to David Bloom, the reporter who had a heart attack in Iraq. His live coverage was great, but the book paints him as a cut above the other reporters and NBC above the other news organizations. Other than this publicity, the book is well thought out and gives a detailed picture of the three operation to overthrow Saddam Hussein. This is a nice picture book and an above average read.
A comprehensive rundown of the invasion.......2005-08-30
I have several different documentary books and dvd's on the invasion of Iraq, a subject of interest for me given that I was there with the 3rd Infantry Division. This book by far provides the most bang for your buck, with hundreds of action-photos and maps covering nearly every aspect of the war. It is written from the point of view of the imbedded reporters, so usually only one unit of each type is featured (ie, 3-15IN but not 1-15IN or 2-69AR). The DVD especially focused on the lives of the imbedded reporters, but both the book and the DVD covered an immense amount of information and made it interesting. I particularly appreciated the way the DVD showed specific news broadcasts, portraying what it was like to be watching us on TV during the invasion; I also was glad to see that at the end of the book it is dedicated to the soldiers that lost their lives between March 21 and April 14, 2003, and a by-date list of those soldiers is given.
Above the fray.......2003-10-10
NBC has done an exceptional job documenting the imbeds' experience in Iraq. Not only was this war covered more comprehensively than any other, but the reporters' experiences add a depth of human emotion so often lacking in the dry stand up reports from a briefing room. But their story is just one part of a beautifully produced book and DVD. This book is filled with stunning pictures of "shock and awe" as well as the innocents caught in the middle. If you only get one book on the recent war iun Iraq, this is it!
Courageous and innovative journalism.......2003-10-03
This book has lots of behind-the-scene accounts from reporters who were actually there, as well as from the producers in the control room. There's also a forward by NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw and an introduction by retired Army general and current NBC military analyst Montgomery Meigs. The book comes with a full-length DVD produced by NBC News and presents highlights of their war coverage along with extra features such as postwar interviews and commentary. This hardcover book has lots of color pictures on its 144 pages and also comes with a DVD.
eloquent and objective visual summary.......2003-10-03
Operation Iraqi Freedom was a war like none other, and this book captures that feeling. Many people worldwide were against the war and will probably pass by this book as a result. That's unfortunate because but no matter what your personal politics are, this book is is a stunning chronology of the good and the bad of Operation Iraqi Freedom. For one thing, the photographs are absolutely stunning. They show both sides of this war and the innocent Iraqi people caught in between a murderous dictator and the world's only Superpower. The book also has a very personal touch. I really enjoyed the photos of NBC anchorman David Bloom. Several detailed graphical maps in the book detail the journeys of the NBC reporters in Iraq and talk about what they encountered everyday from sandstorms to terrorist attacks. If you are the type of person who sees things on TV and feels like it's just a movie, then hopefully the personal tales of these reporters will shake you loose. There's a few books on the market now that try to capture this conflict in paper form, but they just don't come close. Too many of these books let their politics get in the way (imagine right wing Fox News making a book about war) or they were rushed to market to cash-in on the war. Not this book. It's a very eloquent and objective visual summary of the events of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The book also comes with a DVD which is pretty cool. Lots of nice animated graphics and emotional reports from the front line. I highly recommend this book no matter what your feelings about the war were. This book is beautifully produced. The quality of the stories, photographs and objective reporting of events is outstanding.
Book Description
Letters Home is a memoir of one family's war experience as told by Mary Ward, the mother of an infantryman, and through the letters their soldier wrote home from basic training to his last letter from Fallujah. The Ward family pulls the veil back and allows the reader access to their hearts and minds while their son, Sean, was in one of the most dangerous areas in the world. Sean's letters are an evolution from youthful enthusiasm to the depths of war.
Sean enlisted in the Army as a consequence of 9/11 and never looked back. He is specifically infantry because his sole, motivating reason to pick up arms for his country was to fight for the freedoms we as a country have come to cherish. Sean serves with the 3rd Infantry Division (mechanized), was a dismounted machine gunner during the war and will return to Iraq as a mounted gunner on a Bradley.
While Sean was in basic training and then in the war the Ward family incurred a major move, new job and a new dimension to an old illness that challenged them greatly. Each and every single day their overwhelming thoughts were of their sons well-being. Mary Ward describes how it feels to live with this sense of danger 24/7 and the constant stream of thoughts that entered her thoughts.
Five percent of the sale of each book is donated to the Wounded Warriors Project.

MILITARY FAMILIES MUST READ.......2005-12-18
MARY WARDS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR MILITARY FAMILIES. I'VE BEEN FORTUNATE IN KNOWING MARY WARD AND HER SON AND HUSBAND. THIS BOOK IS SOMETHING ALL MILITARY FAMILIES NEED TO READ IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND WHAT OUR SOLDIERS GO THROUGH AND WHAT THEY NEED FOR SUPPORT. YOU CAN'T GO WRONG IF YOU LISTEN TO THIS SOLDIER IN THIS BOOK.
I recommend this book!.......2005-10-18
I recommend this book to moms, dads, families, and friends of military personnel being or currently deployed to Iraq. Reading 'Letters Home' will help you gain insight and understanding into the daily lives of those deployed. It will also validate the emotions experienced by those of us who wait, wonder, and worry through the deployment time. Read how this family supports their soldier and how their friends and family support one another.
Must Read.......2005-02-03
I was fortunate enough to hear about the book Letters Home by Mary Ward from a friend who had just finished reading it twice. I knew that it was a book that I needed to read. Everything that I was told about the book was true.
This book took me back to my own memories of the first time my son was deployed to Iraq. Facing my son's second deployment, I once again picked up Letters Home and read it again and again.
I hope that everyone in America has the opportunity to read this book to understand what it is like to have a loved one in the military.
Once you buy this book you will not be able to put it down!
I anxiously wait for more books by this very talented author.
A Must Read.......2005-01-29
In the Fall of 2004, when I realized my son would be deploying to Iraq for the 2nd time, I began searching the internet once again for ANYTHING relating to the 3rd ID. My search led me to Mary Ward of Marehaven Productions. A review of her book, "Letters Home" by Ron Martz of the Atlanta Journal Constitution caught my eye because he had been embedded with my son's Company on the Thunder Run to Baghdad. I ordered "Letters Home" that day. From the moment I opened the book, I couldn't put it down. It transported me back in time. Her words were my words. Her son became my son. I cried and I felt the joy of a son returning home from war, and the guilt because I knew others had not. In the week before my son left, I felt compelled to read her book again. In 3 short months, I have read it twice. For any parent who has sent their child off to war and is familiar with the emotional roller coaster ride, this is a must read. And for those who have never sent a child off to war, this book offers insight as to how very difficult it is.
This book is a "must read"........2004-12-07
Mary Ward captured my interest with the first sentence and kept it through the entire book. I truly felt her every emotion. It gave me so much appreciation for each and every soldier that is serving our country.

Book Description
Here for the first time is revealed the true and compelling story of the sensationally successful joint US and UK campaign to liberate Iraq from the oppressive regime of Saddam Hussein from its conception to dramatic conclusion.
The author uses his unique knowledge and network of contacts to describe the meticulous planning of this massive undertaking, which involved the mustering of land, sea and air forces from thousands of miles away. He examines the logistical and political problems that at times appeared insurmountable and the nail biting tensions and maneuvering behind the scenes conducted under conditions of extreme pressure and secrecy.
His account of the military operations once hostilities began in such dramatic fashion makes for riveting reading drawing as they do on the experiences of those who fought in the front-line and in the air. The book also delves into those curses of modern warfare, friendly fire incidents and collateral damage, and why, even with all the marvels of modem technology, we still cannot prevent tragedies happening.

A picture filled account.......2004-05-25
This fun new book on the second Iraq war is full of details and pictures. It presents a clear `case for invasion' in its opening pages. Then a detailed cast of characters and units is given, followed by a blow by blow account of the war. Color pictures are the norm and this book is a good quick guide to the war. The only flaw is that although unit names are given the maps showing the actual invasion routes is not detailed enough o show the tactical plain of combat. But nevertheless this is a good book.

A Story For Today.......2006-01-02
A complicated story of responsibilities and emotional conflicts told in an engaging and easy to read style. One of the best military books available.
Nice factional story.......2005-10-04
Mike Gregory blurs the line between real life and fiction with his fictional lead character's ordeal with the attempt to balance a personal life and his duty to serve his country. In the main character's return to battle in the latest Iraq war as a more senior commander you get a glimpse of one man's struggle to prove his unit's worth in combat. A must read.

"We are but mere mortals. Not gods. Not angels. But men. It is in times like these when we must rise above our fears and endeavor to become greater beings." Deployed to Iraq in support of the War on Terror, a soldier embarks on an incredible, intense journey to return home to the loved ones he left behind. How it was...............2007-09-12
"Lew," as he was known to me, Sgt Leptien, did an outstanding job puting this book together. Everything that was wrote was real, and accually gave me a few 'flashbacks' to somethings I once forgot. My family appriciates the book very much, since it was the best way for them to know what we did. Good Job Lew! Road Hunter 16
Great Book.......2007-08-29
I thought this was a great book. It did a good job of making the experience real to the reader. You get a real sense of how things are over there for the soldiers and what they are going through.
Roadhunter Life.......2007-08-19
Being in Iraq with James and being a part of one of the Roadhunter Teams, James does a very good job of telling how life in Iraq was for us. This book gives a first hand view of the good we encountered and the "pain in the butt" moments. It also shares the moments when we all wish we could be home with our loved ones.

Product Description
From exploding camels to desperate suicides, this unexpected first collection of short stories from Operation Iraqi Freedom, provides imaginative answers to many unanswered questions, from bunker bunnies to fragging.
Book Description
When an antitank mine tore off Captain David Rozelle's right foot, the warriors of jihad in Iraq thought they had neutralized one of their most determined foes. They were wrong. Refusing to let his injury stop him, he soon returned to Iraq as commander of an armored cavalry troop. In Back in Action, Rozelle speaks with brisk frankness about his postamputation battles and the gritty determination that carried him through it all. It's an astonishing story of courage, determination, heroism, and devotion to duty overcoming all obstacles.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring story.......2007-02-14
Rozelle's book protrays an interesting story about his personal journey. Well worth the read.
True Hero.......2006-02-12
CPT Dave Rozelle is a true hero and American Patriot. This amazing true story is a must read for any of the War on Terrorism's many critics. Whereas many in our great country sit back and point fingers at those making decisions and fighting overseas, CPT Rozelle is actually doing his part. It's easy to sit on the sidelines, but Dave has fought, been severely wounded, and fought again. He now commands amputees at Walter Reed, getting them in shape to fight again. You can't help but feel even greater respect for our men and women in uniform after reading this one. CPT Rozelle and his men are true Americans, and need to be acknowledged by reading this book.
Interesting.......2005-09-18
This book was tough for me. As a military wife I was drawn to Capt. Rozelle's story. However, his book didn't live up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong, Capt. Rozelle is to be commended for all that he has accomplished and all that he is still accomplishing. The problem, for me, was that in his attempt to show the military in such a great light he came off as somewhat unrelatable. During the first part of the book, he seemed unable to show any sort of failure or flaw. It wasn't until after his injury that he let the reader see his humanity. He finally told stories of how he let himself down and how he eventually picked himself up and went forward. My only gripe is that he failed to show this same side of himself in the earlier portions of the book.
Don't believe the lack of hype.......2005-06-21
If you believe that troop-morale is low this book should change your mind. I've heard Capt. Rozelle on Laura Ingraham's show telling his story and each time I hear him I'm more confident, proud and optimistic about what we're doing in Iraq. Rozelle provides great insight on what's really going on and is highly critical of the poor press coverage of the War in Iraq.
Should have been 4.5 stars.......2005-04-04
I was eager to read Capt. Rozelle's book and compare with others by combat veterans from previous conflicts as far back as the American Revolution. Though the Captain has been exemplary in his actions as a soldier, and in his determination to overcome his disability, I was dissapointed and offended by the use of profane and vulgar language in the text. I realize the useage is common in the military, (I am a veteran myself), but it is never appropriate in an historical text to be read now and for generations to come.
I am also dissapointed in Regnery for not providing better editing.

The REAL truth.......2006-05-21
As a member of the only infantry platoon attatched to 1/6 field artillery in Baqubah I must say that every story that comes out of there is falsefied, Exaggerated, and told from the eyes of troops who's biggest worry was whether or not the internet would go out, or if chow would be delivered to them. I can't belive that someone would buy this junk, nor can I belive that someone actually listend to this [...] and wrote it in a book.
