Book Description
Master the basics of data centers to build server farms that enhance your Web site performance
- Learn design guidelines that show how to deploy server farms in highly available and scalable environments
- Plan site performance capacity with discussions of server farm architectures and their real-life applications to determine your system needs
Today's market demands that businesses have an Internet presence through which they can perform e-commerce and customer support, and establish a presence that can attract and increase their customer base. Underestimated hit ratios, compromised credit card records, perceived slow Web site access, or the infamous "Object Not Found" alerts make the difference between a successful online presence and one that is bound to fail.
These challenges can be solved in part with the use of data center technology. Data centers switch traffic based on information at the Network, Transport, or Application layers. Content switches perform the "best server" selection process to direct users' requests for a specific service to a server in a server farm. The best server selection process takes into account both server load and availability, and the existence and consistency of the requested content.
Data Center Fundamentals helps you understand the basic concepts behind the design and scaling of server farms using data center and content switching technologies. It addresses the principles and concepts needed to take on the most common challenges encountered during planning, implementing, and managing Internet and intranet IP-based server farms. An in-depth analysis of the data center technology with real-life scenarios make Data Center Fundamentals an ideal reference for understanding, planning, and designing Web hosting and e-commerce environments.

Read this book...if you want to work for hi-techmovers.......2007-04-03
This is an excellent primer for everyone who uses, plans, or manages a modern data center. This is a must read for our all our senior coordinators. Here at hi-techmovers we are responsible for moving million dollar data centers, so our insurance carrier required us to put together a must read list, as a way of qualifying our potential senior employees...this book is at the top of the list. As with all computer books, it is dated, but it contains much of the base knowledge for data center professionals.
Its a bit dry...but who needs water, when you have such feast of information.

A Ton of Information.......2005-04-18
I recently read the title "Data Center Fundamentals", by Mauricio Arregoces and Maurizio Portolani. ISBN: 1587050234. This title has a ton of information in it. It covers just about every technology that could make up a Data Center environment. The authors have done a good job of cover detail about the several technologies in this title. Some technologies are covered in more detail than others. For example there's a lot of information on HTTP related technologies and not so much detail on say routing protocol. This makes sense, because the title is "Data Center Fundamental".
This is a great title for someone that is not well versed in several technologies, because the authors have covered a great deal of information and has done a good job presenting the basics of each. This will give someone that is not familiar with a certain technology the information they need to get an idea of the technology so they can continue to expand on what they've learned. Even though most of the basics are covered, the authors throw in great advanced information on technology that would pertain to Data Centers. I've learned a few nice advanced techniques on how to speed up network convergence when failures occur. The book is littered with nuggets of advanced techniques on ways to improve the overall architecture and performance of a Data Center.
I would recommend this title to all IT personnel that are responsible for either Networking, System Administration, System and Network Operations, even Managers and Project Managers should have a copy on their desk. In this day and age, it's imperative that technical support personnel have knowledge that crosses over their job function and into other technologies that make up the rest of the 'Network'. This makes them more proficient at their work and more valuable. I would highly recommend this title to personnel responsible for Small to Medium Business Networks especially, because those folks don't always have the exposure to the many different technologies that are covered in this title and will give them a great start to doing it right.
I think the Authors make good use of figures, diagrams and tables to augment the text where needed. The title isn't loaded with diagrams, but there are plenty to support the author's objective.
There is enough information in here about the lower level working of protocols; to give protocol analyzer enthusiasts there money's worth. There are other books out there that cover protocol analysis, but few books do it well. This book covers protocol analysis well and with an easy to understand format with supporting window diagrams.
The Authors have kept the sections straight and to the point. There is little wasted ink in here. There is some repetitive information in the book, specifically pertaining to HTTP header error codes. Not sure how the topic got covered three times. I suppose instead of having the reader reference one chapter/section on the topic, it was included in the text when needed. The information isn't exactly the same and by the time your done reading the book, you should have a solid understanding of Hyper Text Transport Protocol (HTTP).
I think the information contained in this book is a little heavier on the system side more so than the data networking side. I'm not suggesting there is a lack of information on the data networking side, only that there is more pertaining to systems.
Overall I thought this was a great title. It crosses many boundaries of responsibility in the Enterprise Networks and ties them all together very nicely. I would certainly purchase another title written by these authors. They are thorough in their writing, with not a lot of fluff.
Exceptional for any networking proffesional.......2004-10-25
Data Center Fundamentals
ISBN - 1587050234
By - Mauricio Arregoces and Maurizio Portolani
Publisher - Cisco Press
As someone who has worked in and help design a couple Data Centers I looked to this book thinking I would find a good reference in design but one which covered much of my own knowledge already. While I wasn't entirely wrong I can honestly say this book holds much more inside it's covers than many much more expensive or comparable books hold combined. Being a `Fundamentals" book it follows true to the nature of not being for the plain interested or uninitiated technical type but then surprised me when I found a majority of the book exceptionally well thought out and explained in ways that even my mother could grasp.
Those interested in learning what high availability really means and entails should read this book and understand it thoroughly. The tips and knowledge one can glean from this book is awesome just for the TCP/IP and network portions of the book and it truly does lead you down the path to large scale success.
While every section of the book is almost a book of it's own (it is an extremely long book) and could likely get sold as such, this book takes head on the task of trying to cram into it every aspect you would need to delve into a world made up of fully redundant server and network architecture.
As a good example, DNS, while reasonably simple and elegant has many facets to it that if improperly configured or understood can be a make or break item in many data centers. Security is yet another aspect that can either help or hurt a company and it's client base. If either of these is something you want to ensure is part of your considerations when building a data center then this is likely a book right up your alley. The Cryptography section is perfect for those looking to help out a bit in their search for a CISSP and the section on layer 2 and layer 3 functions is almost invaluable to anyone in a network administration field.
Lastly the aspect of this book that most astounded me was the depth that it was able to attain in such a short book. With the stress of putting together a book so focused on redundancy it is hard to believe as much foundation material made it into this book as it did. The authors made sure to try to cover every aspect of the underlying technology beneath every higher level solution they proposed.
This book is a must read for anyone interested in networking and server support regardless of being in a true "Data Center".
A lot of Technical Material.......2004-01-30
This book covers a lot of technical material; it is so broad, very relevant to anyone working with TCP/IP.
I have not read the book in detail, but just by scanning through the book, I have the feeling that this is a book every network professional should have as a reference ... it touches so many issues I met during my process to become CCDP/CCNP.
I believe this is one book a professional will want to look at again and again. At USD 55.00, it is all worth it!!

Book Description
Digital rights management (DRM) is a set of business models and technologies that allows media companies to protect their intellectual property -- and profit in the online world. Cowritten by DRM pioneer William Rosenblatt, this lucid primer outlines the state of DRM today for media executives and IT decision-makers, covering business models (such as subscriptions), core technologies (watermarking, encryption, authentication), standards (such as XrML), vendors, and more.
Customer Reviews:
A good attempt at explaining a difficult topic.......2003-04-12
As noted below, DRM consists of legal, technical and business issues and anyone trying to provide an overview of all three has their work cut out for them. Particularly in the early chapters of the book, these authors give it a good try.
Unfortunately, the biggest problem with the book is that they try to treat the technology standards and products available on the market, and the market is just changing too quickly for that to be for more than just a superficial look. Too much of what they discuss is already outdated, out-of-business, merged with other offerings or otherwise defunct. Not the fault of the authors, just the nature of the DRM market.
This book is:
Not a good read if you already understand the basic issues and hope to get more insight into the technology-- go to the web for that.
Absolutely a good read if you want to become familiar in a basic way in the underlying issues. Part 1 of the book is really useful reading even to help people who are pretty familiar with the topic structure their thinking.
Still waiting for DRM to be explained........2002-11-12
The problem with the several texts available on digital copyright or Digital Rights Management is that the topic demands a treatment from at least three different perspectives: namely legal, technical and business. There are several books that try to tackle the topic of digital copyright from a legal viewpoint, and this one is clearly coming from a technical perspective. Legal issues are covered, but rather superficially. More surprisingly the crucial business issues and models that are driving interest in DRM are barely mentioned and there is no dicussion of the business models that are working and those that are not. Disappointingly many of the technical issues are also fudged in a way that will leave non-technical audiences confused, and those who are following technical developments frustrated. The fact is that, technically at least, DRM is an area where approaches, technologies and standards are all in rapid development and the industry has failed to converge on any single direction. This book's effort to offer a comprehensive review of available products means that it risked redundancy before it was published, as many of the companies and technologies have ceased to be relevant. What the world still needs is a book on DRM that reviews the law, discusses the business models (and consumer needs) that are driving developments, and describes fundamental approaches in a way that will remain relevant whatever product Microsoft may impose on us all next year. Unfortunately this book intrigues enough to encourage one to want to know more about DRM, but never really provides the answers.
Very good market overview.......2002-05-06
This book combines a business strategist's view of the DRM space with a sound explanation of the underlying technology, and also explains how both have evolved over the past decade. It's rare to find both views in any book, particularly one about an emerging software market. Usually, insights into markets like this book provides require purchasing research reports and speaking one-on-one to industry insiders. So, save yourself $10,000 and three weeks of work ... buy the book.
Great reference.......2002-04-08
In an ever changing business landscape, I find nothing more comforting than relevant information. As an web application developer I used to always have questions about legality and DRM that nobody could answer. This book has a permananent spot on my shelf!
By far the best treatment of DRM I've ever run across.......2002-04-06
DRM is a confusing topic, and this one of the clearest expositions of DRM (or most any other technical topic!) that I've ever run across. It demystifies a complex subject with simple straightforward language, describes key vendors and organizes them accurately into categories, and even contains a wealth of useful materials such as checklists to help the customer determine business/technical requirements, evaluate vendors, etc.
A must-have for any publisher, intellectual property lawyer, venture capitalist, technology vendor, or consulting firm dealing with digital content distribution or online intellectual property.

Covers the Basics.......2005-12-08
This book provides a good introduction to computer forensics and covers most of the necessary basic information. Do not expect to read this book (or any of the other computer forensic books available) and be able to perform any sort of in-depth forensic analysis. It's good information for Sys Admins or tech-savvy home users. Those needing professional-level information for their job (computer security, law enforcement, etc) should look to 5-6 day courses that provide in-depth, hands-on training.
Again, as an introductory text on computer forensics, the book is good. Chapter 7 (Procedured for Collecting and Preserving Evidence) could use a little beefing-up with respect to boot disks. It is admirable that the author shows how to create Windows and Linux boot disks, but they don't provide any other benefit (no tools, etc). He should have mentioned freeware liveCDs for both Windows and Linux, such as the "Ultimate Boot CD for Windows" and "Helix" for Linux (search the web). Not only are they bootable media, they have tools useful for forensic analysis.
Readable and relevant - but US-centric.......2004-03-26
The introduction describes this book as a "complete introductory course in basic computer forensics and incident response" and that is indeed the case. It begins with an overview of computer forensics and incident response in Chapter 1 and progresses to legal considerations, obtaining and preserving digital evidence, system internals (mostly Windows although Unix is also discussed) and ends with analysis of real-world attacks and possible defences in Chapter 12. Press references and citations are used to give the big picture. All in all this is a book which I would recommend with two "buts": first, the author is writing from a US perspective for a US reader, presenting and discussing US-specific legislation and legal issues; while this would be of direct interest to our US-based brethren it is of no much use to anyone else. Second, platform-dependent coverage is mostly Windows, and although Linux/Unix get mentioned throughout the book the coverage of UNIX internals and forensics is not on par with Windows counterparts. Having said this, if you are in the US and are using Windows, do get this book - it is a readable and straight introduction to a complex and interesting field which becomes more and more important.
Fair introductory text, could be much better........2004-01-24
The author covers different aspects of incident response, but fails to go deeper in the matter.
The author talks briefly about types of attacks, briefly about forensics tools, and briefly about the incident response procedures. Such shallow coverage of the topics makes for a quite dissappointing read.
On the other hand he offers the readers complete text of USA Patriot Act 2001 - with little discussion of its implications, privacy concerns and its impact on the organizational security! Readers also get treated to full texts of Janet Renot(sp?) speeches - also with little explanation. Seems he tried to increase the word count of the book.
Forensics tools are mentioned with instructions to run them starting as "Step 1:Click the Start menu button". Every tool has a half a page description on how to start it with a screenshot taking up the rest of the page.
Forensics techniques are described, but the author presents this quite technical material in the abstract, easy-to-read form that takes away all the usefullness of it - reads like a summary.
Incident response chapters present the reader with the common sense material. Might be useful to get an idea of what is involved in developing a incident response process, but it's hard to find it practical - it's simply too general.
A fair introductory book, could be much better.
Timely and worthwhile!.......2004-01-24
This book gives the reader a solid grounding in a difficult field. Since forensics and response are an area where you're up against a creative enemy, it's impossible to give the reader a cookbook approach. Schweitzer gives the reader the tools and framework necessary to begin tackling this very difficult problem. I'm really happy to see this book available on the market, since the problem it addresses is one that's getting worse all the time and shows no sign of getting better soon.
Good job, Doug!
mjr.
Right on the button.......2004-01-19
A well considered and well structured work for the IT professional.
The book is fast paced and wisely does not get dragged down with too much detail and 'how to' guides. It provided the knowledge and check lists to enable the reader to react appropriatly to an IT emergency or situation where a forensic approach is required.
It's clear structure will enable me to use the book as a reference work in the future.
The included CDROM was useful although in the future a PDF guide of each file would have been handy reference. It would have also been nice to have seen the free tools mentioned in the book included on the disk.
Overall an excellent read I will look out for Douglas Schweitzer books again.

too basic.......2007-06-13
this book is for those who know absolutely nothing about putting a webpage together. i was hoping for more help on structuring a library webpage for a rapidly growing institution, instead, i got a basic html manual using a library webpage as a "sample" project.

Breathtaking.......1999-10-27
Adolf Hitler and the editors of Time-Life Books deliver yet another masterful performance. This book is not a couple of inches thick as other Hitler books are but, you feel you miss out on nothing because what other books have in information, and verboseness this one more than makes up with sharp, concise, professional writing. This one really takes you deep withing the inner circle of concentric power of the infamous Third Reich emanating from will of the Fuhrer. No other title has succeeded in providing such an intimate view of the secluded everyday happenings in the lives of the supreme masters, that you actually have the feeling of being a first person witness. The insiders view is intense, as much of the action revolves around the magnetic personality of Adolf, it is not only a historically accurate document but an really intriguing personal biography. The photographs are of first rate, and is instrumental in the overall feel of splendor of this title. Reading it is guaranteed to be a tremendous affair
A Gem........1999-06-14
Center of the Web, (im assuming its from the Time Life Third Reich series) is an absolute must for any Hilter, and Third Reich student. This title is from the masterful Time Life Third Reich series, assuring a competent work, and delivering a masterpiece. This book in laced with breathtaking pictures and illustrations. The writing is superb, and the captions are marvels by themselves. The atention to detail in the production of the cover, the design, and layout of the book is outstanding. While other books are content to throw facts and information at you, this book is in a rare categorie of books that totally immerse you into the storie. The book takes you deep into the highest sector of Nazi Germany. into the daily life of Adolf Hitler. Pure reading enjoyment.

Almost every business, large and small, is clamoring to get on the Web. Some do so with far more grace and effectiveness than others. This book helps you devise an effective Web commerce strategy. You're told how to prepare your company to handle online sales, the kind of contents that attracts customers, what security considerations are most important, and how to keep customers coming back. Special emphasis is on Windows NT-based servers. Among the author's clients are CBS, Microsoft, Fox and the New York Times. A book like this can help make the difference between a rush to the Web, and a thoughtful -- and effective -- Web site that maintains its value.

Pluggola for Net.Genesis products.......1997-06-05
This book isn't about Internet commerce, it's
about building a case for the use of Net.Genesis
products. Ironically, most of these products
have been canned since the book went into print.
This book misses many important points about
Internet commerce such as credit card verification
and clearing, secure storage of customer info,
etc. About the only point that they
hit related to commerce is SSL and certificates. It also only focuses on the use of Windows NT as a server platform.
The only reason I didn't return this book is
that it does contain detailed information on
three of the leading Web server software packages
for Windows NT, Netscape Commerce Server, Microsoft IIS, and O'Reilly Website.
