Book Description
Citywide networks of green roofs can result in cooler summer temperatures, reduced energy demand, controlled stormwater runoff, protected wildlife habitat, and an enhanced sense of urban well-being. Highlighting these benefits, Green Roofs informs and inspires communities, designers, building owners, and government and business leaders by showcasing the environmental and aesthetic potential of green roofs around the world.
"Imagine the effect of community kitchen gardens on the rooftops of New York City," writes visionary green architect William McDonough in his forward. "The gardens would make visible the vital connections between water, soil, food, and human culture, and create a network of living landscapes across the ancient archipelago that is New York City."
Hundreds of photographs, forty case studies of exemplary green roof projects - from Mexico City to Malmo, Sweden to Fukuoka, Japan to Dearborn, Michigan - provide inspiration and guidance for green roof development, as well as design details. The book includes seven essays on green roof development in Berlin, Tokyo, London, Portland, Chicago, Toronto, and New York City. Additional essays detail the technical requirements, architectural history, and design possibilities of vegetated rooftops.
Customer Reviews:
Look elsewhere for technical info.......2007-06-25
Perhaps some of the previous reviewers liked it because they use it for inspiration when designing at the very high visual level -- because really, this book is about pictures.
There is no useful information in the book about the design or construction of green roofs (except a couple of pages in passing).
Want to know more about how to design and construct using membranes, insulation, drainage, soil and gravel? Then look elsewhere.
Want to know more about how to design and construct a green roof on a new versus and existing building? Then look elsewhere.
How about planning the maintenance needed for a green roof whilst at the design and construction phase? Again look elsewhere.
Nice Coffee Table book, but no real information.......2007-01-25
Compared to the wealth of books on the subject in German and Japanese, there has yet to be a single good book in English. This book has nice pictures, but it doesn't even attempt to touch on the detail required to fully understand this subject adequately to qualify people to specify and actually implement Green Roofs. [...].
Green roofs around the world.......2006-04-23
GREEN ROOFS: ECOLOGICAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION advocates the construction of 'green roofs' which can reduce energy demand and protect wildlife, packing in a survey of buildings and communities already using such roofs to their advantage. Some forty case studies of these projects pair color photos of roofs around the world with discussions of sustainable development and project management: thus practical applications appear alongside environmental advocacy. Experts also discuss technical requirements and history, which will please working architects. An excellent survey of working green roofs and their appeal.
Great Book.......2006-01-27
As a very vocal proponet of green or living roofs I love this book. I believe that Mr Collum, previous reviewer must have just looked at the pictures. Pages 9 through 23 tell very well why we should have green roofs. If you are already an advocate or a newbe to green roofs, this book is for you. There is not a lot of technical information here but it gives the bare bones. If everything you needed to know about green roofs was here you couldn't lift the book. This book is ment to inspire you to get behind green roofs and advocate them in your neighborhood.
Why produce a book like this?.......2005-12-23
This book has lots of nice photographs. That is all. The technical section consists of two pages which state that a waterproof membrane is needed between the roof structure and the soil. There is no information of a technical nature in the book. I wonder why use up the earth's resources for no value. An absolute waste.
Book Description
A remarkable collection of vibrant and diverse readings, Sustainable Architecture White Papers explores the critical link between our built and natural environments. Cutting-edge architecture, design, planning, public works, and education leaders illustrate the value of a new architectural strategy. Sustainable Architecture teaches us that when creative processes are used in conjunction with social, cultural, and environmental systems, architecture can meet the aesthetic and practical requirements of today without compromising the needs of future generations.
A sample of the contents reveals a top-notch team of forward-thinkers: William McDonough: "Eco-effectiveness: A New Design Strategy" Croxton Collaborative Architects: "Human-Centered Sustainable Design" Architectural Record: "Taking the Elective Out of Environmental Education" Karl Linn: "Reclaiming the Commons" Pliny Fisk: "Advanced Green Building" James Wines: "The Art of Architecture in the Age of Ecology" Emilio Ambasz: "Green Towns"
This beautifully assembled compilation, published by the Earth Pledge Foundation, follows on the success of Sustainable Cuisine White Papers and reflects the organization's mission to promote sustainability, primarily in the areas of architecture and cuisine. Working with architects, builders and designers, and farmers, chefs, and restaurateurs, Earth Pledge creates nonprofit media projects that promote "green living" in these respective areas.
With a preface by Paul Hawken, this is a star-studded collection of essays on sustainable architecture that speaks to professionals and nonprofessionals alike. A perfect read for anyone interested in how the architecture and design aesthetic connects with environmental sustainability.

Socially Conscience Design.......2005-07-11
I am an architecture student, and this book has insight that I may not have gained through other resources. It is a fast read with a lot of great examples and theory. This resource contains multiple ideas from leading practitioners in environmental sustainability. Chapters include: "Practice, Building Community, Public Works, Homes and Schools, Products and Materials, and Resources."
Great Green Resource.......2003-03-12
Short papers on many different topics concerning green building, sustainable design, and renewable energy. Top experts in the field offer advice, experience, and resources.
The voices of sustainable design.......2001-06-26
The Earth Pledge Foundation's Sustainable Architecture White Papers brings together leading voices---of architects, designers, planners, educators, manufacturers, and journalists---in a handsome, diminutive volume. The essayists are each a part of the sustainable design movement; some have been in the trenches for years, such as Randy Croxton and Kirsten Childs, James Wines, and Bill Browning, and others are household names, such as William McDonough (writing with his chemist collaborator Michael Braungart). Some address the big picture and others deconstruct the micro components of the effort, such as non-toxic paints and office furniture. The volume includes an interview with Samuel Mockbee, who founded Auburn University's Rural Studio, and whose clear-eyed approach to how architecture fits into communities is remarkably elegant and simple. "The smart architect thinks rationally about a combination of issues including sustainability, durability, longevity, appropriate materials, and sense of place," he says. "The challenge is finding the balance between environmental considerations and economic constraints." What's important about a diverse collection of essays like this now is that it comes when the movement is breaking into the mainstream in a more complete way than it has in the past. Sustainability is being addressed, increasingly, as something that involves not just the physical but also the social, institutional, and spiritual aspects of life on earth. This volume is a valuable guide to that breakthrough, from the practical to the visionary.

Book Description
Tommy Ford's terrible childhood dramatically changed after his grandmother taught him about life, love, and her wiccan ways. Heading off to college to start anew, Tommy hopes to find that one special person to share his life. Mark Young thinks he has it all: handsome good looks, athletic ability, family wealth, and a pre-planned future. Mark is senior quarterback and a member of the fraternity Kappa Lambda Pi. What else does he need? After Mark chooses Tommy as his little brother during the Kappa Lambda Pi pledge period, Tommy uses his positive attitude, charming personality, and just a little bit of his grandmother's magic to get Mark's attention. Is it magic or is it love that brings these two together? Is it real or temporary? Either way, the magic of love will turn both their worlds upside down!

Good Guys All Around.......2007-08-11
This is a story of postive role models for gay men. The backgorund is a college setting, where acceptance of a gay life is given freely. There's some magic, the kind your grandmother spoke of: traditions in strength, honesty, courage, that bring about a positive change, not Dante's Cove shenanigans. But mostly it is the story of Tommy, who falls in love with straight guy Mark. Mark feels the connection with Tommy but is otherwise occupied with his girlfriend. When that relationship goes bully-up for the umpteenth time, Mark opens his eyes and heart to Tommy. Their love is honest and heartfelt. But Mark's insecurities leads him to break up with Tommy. The time apart mature's Mark, him finding acceptance and strength in his love for Tommy. It also helps Tommy find the road of forgiveness. When Tommy needs Mark the most, he is there. In the end they pledge a love to each other forever.
A "Don't-Put-Me-Down" Book.......2007-08-10
This book was a title I picked up based on reading other customer reviews and which I agree with almost entirely. Larry Coles is a good writer and can tell a tale with verve and heart-warming simplicity. I have looked up the publisher, P.D. Publishing on the webpage, and Mr. Coles at this time has no other titles available. I would be interested in reading some of his other works; especially some of his vampire novels and gay romances. I hope Mr. Coles can find a publisher for his other titles. I couldn't put this book down until I finished it and was lost in the world of the characters up to the last page! To Mr. Coles, keep up the good work and I hope you find a way to share some of your other works with us, your reading public.

Heart warming gay romance. A most refreshing plot........2007-07-30
It is good to read about gay love in campus where there is no gay bashing and fellow students try to understand and accept their gay friends. This story in a college is well written, its plot original and refreshing. Tommy is a freshman with a positive attitude and has a flair in earthly magics. He fell in love with Mark a senior who is in all appearance totally straight with his permanent and temporary girl friends. Their evolving love is credible, engaging and heartwarming, with a little magical help. Mark coming to terms with who he is, Tommy's hearbreaking moments are convincingly told. I also have a wonderfuly time reading about the workings of fraternity, pledges and "brotherly" support and care. The fraternity brothers, Oscar, Jack, Dave, Ken, Kyle are equally interesting. I love the interaction among these young men and would have loved to read more about Jack and Ken. How about more on these characters.
Awesome Book.......2007-06-13
I just finished reading this books and it was one of the best books I have read in a long time. The characters were real and the plot was wonderful as well. Once I started reading the book I had a hard time putting it down. Larry really showed how some people can get over their prejudices about gay men and understand how they feel.
My favorite character was Mark as I think he grew the most in this story realizing what and who he is and realizing he is actually a very sensitive guy. I would recommend this book to all young guys that are coming out.
The Author Speaks About "Freshman".......2007-03-29
Growing up gay is difficult enough without people constantly harassing you with sweet names like "fag" and "queer." I was fortunate in that was the only harassment I had to deal with growing up in the 60s and 70s. After graduating from college in 1981, I moved to S.F. where I had less of this type of harassment to deal with. "Freshman Pledge" is a fantasy gay romance between two guys, one of whom is a football player, who meet in college during a fraternity pledge period. Both young men have other issues in their lives that they have to confront before deciding whether they belong together. By writing this fictional story, I was able to make growing up gay a little easier, and I was also able to bash back at those groups who often called out those sweet names by making them the bad guys. It was a good way for me to release some of the latent frustration that I had retained all these years. I also believe that love is magic and that when you find it you hold onto it. I thoroughly enjoyed writing this story, which some may find to be a sentimental love story. But all of the best love stories are sentimental and end up being the best relationships you can find. (Yes, RuthlessBatty is Larry Coles' handle!)
Book Description
Teens who have been abused need information and support to begin the healing process. They may not be willing or able to approach family members; they may not know how to start coping with the effects of these traumatizing events. Written by a psychologist who has worked with abused kids and teens for more than a decade, WHEN SOMETHING FEELS WRONG is for adolescents searching for positive ways to deal with their history of abuse. The approach is informative, realistic, and encouraging. The emphasis throughout is on the need to talk about the abuse, get help, and know that abuse is never the victim's fault. Includes checklists, examples, journaling ideas, and resources. Written to and for teens, this book belongs in all school and public libraries, counselors' offices, doctors'v offices, and social-service agencies.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource.......2004-01-23
Five million teens were reported abused in the year 2000; an estimated 1,200 died from some form of abuse or neglect. These horrifically high numbers indicate this is a self-help book for all teens to use as a guide to get safe, or how to help someone they know get out of an abusive situation, be it sexual, physical, emotional, or plain neglect.
Psychologist and counselor Deanna Pledge clearly defines each type of abuse, including abuse by peers, and follows up with a question and answer section. The next third of the book is about taking action, how and when to tell, who to turn to, and what to expect, while the final chapters focus on healing.
Sensitive topics are handled with delicacy. The language is carefully technical, to be as non-threatening as possible. Statistics combine with personal remarks from teens who have been there to show readers that they are not alone. Writing exercises at the end of each chapter offer outlets for emotion, while affirmations promote well-being.
Above all, Pledge stresses that abuse can happen to anyone, no one deserves to have it happen to him or her, and if it does happen you are not at fault. It is a hopeful book too, in spite of its intense subject matter. Many teens got out of abusive situation, and so can other readers. This book is an excellent start to the healing process and is a valuable resource that should be made available in all secondary school and public libraries.

Great!.......2004-03-01
This bright and colorful book is a great way to introduce your young American reader to the Pledge of Allegiance. The clauses of the Pledge are presented one to each two pages - printed large and accompanied by several large and highly entertaining pictures that accompany the thought behind the words. Great!
After the Pledge, there are pages explaining it line-by-line, and then some great information on the American flag. This is a very nice book, one that you will be proud to share with your young reader. My family highly recommends it to yours!
The Pledge of Allegiance by Scholastic Inc.......2004-02-07
Very well-written book. It could use more historical information about the topic addressed. For example, the early Pledge of Allegiance was the origin of the stiff-arm salute. The Pledge was written (1892) by Francis Bellamy, cousin to an infamous author of the time, Edward Bellamy, and they were both self-proclaimed socialists in the Nationalism movement and promoted military socialism. They wanted government to take over all schools and impose robotic chanting to flags. The Pledge was the origin of the salute of the National Socialist German Workers Party. American socialists (Edward Bellamy teamed with the Theosophical Society) also bear some blame for German socialism's notorious flag symbol, which evolved into overlapping S-letters for socialism under the National Socialist German Workers Party. The Pledge's early salute was not an ancient Roman salute, and the 'ancient Roman salute' myth came from the Pledge Of Allegiance. It is amazing that books don't examine the issue of whether the pledge should be dropped entirely, especially for young children in government schools. The socialist dogma led to the socialist Wholecost: 60 million dead under the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; 50 million under the Peoples' Republic of China; 20 million under the National Socialist German Workers Party. It might be the most tragic part of world history.
Helpful book!.......2002-01-03
My students are immigrants or children of immigrants learning English. They have to say the pledge every day but may get the words wrong and certainly don't comprehend it. This book takes out some of the guess work and helps them understand what is going on and what people are saying. It brings them comfort and relief.
The Pledge of Allegiance.......2001-12-21
This book is beautifully illustrated with photographs that are sure to spark discussion. The text (the Pledge of Allegiance) is broken into meaningful phrases that make the reader reflect on the words that we sometimes rush through or take for granted. I highly recommend purchasing the big book version for lower grade classroom use. A gem!
A picture book with great photos and interesting historical.......2001-12-06
This picture book has very colorful photos of our country and our fellow citizens. The pages are spread by the breaks in text that we know from reciting the pledge orally at school. Children are from different races. Scenes from all over America and even an astronaut on the moon holding the American flag are depicted.
In the back there are small photos that were depicted in the book with explanations about where they are and other factual information to explain the contents of the photographs. The entire pledge is rewritten in the back pages and an explanation of who wrote it, why, and when. The meaning of why we recite the pledge is given. Facts about the American flag's changes over the years and facts about the proper way to display a flag, and on what days, are included.
A beautiful book with great information that every child should be exposed to.

Whether kids want to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or respectfully decline, this straightforward and playfully illustrated guide clears up what the pledge really means--word by word, and line by line.
Two pledge-loving literacy experts (Michael Sampson and Bill Martin, Jr.) and one polite pledge-abstainer (Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator Chris Raschka) have come together to explicate America's time-honored oath in plain, kid-friendly language: "I pledge (A pledge is a promise) allegiance to (Allegiance is loyalty) the flag (A flag is a symbol that stands for a place, a thing, or an idea. Making a promise to a flag usually means the same thing as making a promise to whatever the flag stands for.)." Sampson and Martin's annotations adequately convey the essential meaning behind the words, although understandably less so in the thornier sections: "under God (Many people believe that a democracy is a reflection of how God thinks--every single person is important.)"
I Pledge Allegiance also covers some of the history behind the pledge and the flag, but what kids will probably remember best--aside from the pledge itself--is Raschka's clever, winning collage work, which somehow manages to sum up ideas like liberty, justice, and God with a few quick strokes and scraps. (An 18-by-24-inch flag poster is included with the book.) (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes
Book Description
"Finally, here's a picture book that helps young children move beyond rote recitation of the Pledge to find meaning in its language. This is the book parents and teachers have been waiting for." — BOOKLIST (starred review)
"I led a pigeon to the flag" . . . "and to the wee puppet" . . . "one
nation, and a vegetable" . . . What was that again? Children in the United States have been reciting the Pledge of Allegiance since 1892 — and for about that long, they've found its big words confusing. Now, beloved children's book author Bill Martin Jr (BROWN BEAR, BROWN BEAR, WHAT DO YOU SEE?), fellow literacy expert Michael Sampson, and Caldecott Honor-winning artist Chris Raschka give America's children a hand, and explain this patriotic poem once and for all. A new paperback edition offers notes and suggested activities to help parents and teachers make this book even more interesting to and fun for children.
Customer Reviews:
It already has 50 stars.......2005-04-12
I think this is a nice book to teach a child the pledge of allegiance and to explain to them what the pledge means. This book breaks down the meaning of each word and explains them in a way that children can understand. It gives the history of the pledge, a little about the flag, what to do while saying the pledge and touches on what this great country is all about. From other reviews I have read, it appears that Francis Bellamy, who authored the pledge, did not include the line "...under God". Nonetheless, it was included in this book and is the version of the pledge that I recited every morning during my school years...and it is the version I will teach my daughter.
I Pledge Allegiance by Bill Martin Jr.......2004-02-07
Very well-written book. It could use more historical information about the topic addressed. For example, the early Pledge of Allegiance was the origin of the stiff-arm salute. The Pledge was written (1892) by Francis Bellamy, cousin to an infamous author of the time, Edward Bellamy, and they were both self-proclaimed socialists in the Nationalism movement and promoted military socialism. Noble try........2003-01-12
The goal--nicely attempted--of breaking down each line of this too-difficult-for-the-kids-who-have-to-say-it speech falls short.
While they explain the large words in kid-friendly phrases and credit Francis Bellamy, they make the significant omission of the fact that Bellamy DID NOT write the phrase "under God," and that it was added without his permission. The text says, "Many people believe that a democracyis a reflection of how God thinks..." without mentioning that the pledge, in its current form, misquotes its author.
A book that is designed to clear things up should be more accurate. Nonetheless, the illustrations are eye-catching and the language accessible to kids. It's a good idea to give them a better understanding than their often-quoted, "I led the pigeons to the flag..."
What Our Pledge Really Means............2002-10-05
Every morning millions of children stand and face the flag, place their hands over their hearts, and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. But what do these 31 words really mean? Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson have taken the pledge apart, and explained each word (pledge: A pledge is a promise), or phrase (one nation: Our states and territories have bonded together to form one nation. One nation means one country), in simple, kid-friendly language. Add to that some history, fun facts, witty asides, and the clever artwork of award winning illustrator, Chris Raschka, and you have the makings of an engaging, entertaining, and informative book. Perfect for youngsters 6 and older, I Pledge Allegiance is a creative and straightforward look at the meaning behind America's most often recited words, and works well with Syl Sobel's Our Pledge Of Allegiance.

The Inheritance of Loss
ASIN: 0374230706
Release Date: 2005-09-22 |
Book Description
It is 1961 and Trinidad, at once a lush island paradise and a poverty-stricken hole, is inching toward independence. Narpat, a sugar cane farmer, finds himself caught at the crossroads of a changing world. He is a hard-working man of modest means, and is sickened by the corruption and materialism running rampant on the island. He thinks his neighbors are greedy, shiftless, and enslaved to the rumshop. But Narpat is different. He contrasts the helplessness of the islanders with the resourcefulness of his ancient Aryans, and through a series of stringent moral codes and dietary injunctions, sets about to create order within his family and the village. His rules impose a great deal of deprivation on his wife and four children, and his wife must wage her own battle against her husband's ensuing neglect. Then Narpat decides to single-handedly build a factory to prevent the loss of his livelihood. Narpat's youngest son Jeeves watches his father's obsession with the factory, watches his mother's health decline, and watches as she dies. Unable to prevent his mother's death, he tries to redeem his father by constantly reminding him of the fables the older man told to his young children. And these fables with their undertones of pledges and duty steel the son for a terrible sacrifice.
In A Perfect Pledge, Maharaj combines a Dickensian rendering of the effects of poverty, caste, envy, superstition, corruption and bigotry with vivid, complex characters and gorgeous writing, in a novel that celebrates both the resilience of the human spirit and the heartbreak of failed dreams.
Customer Reviews:
"Is something that fall on your lap. Nobody else could do it.".......2005-10-02
In 1956 Trinidad, Narpat Dubay's family lives quietly, this father of four tending his sugar cane patch and designing ingenious contraptions to make life easier. In Trinidad, nothing is ever planned, the frequent floods thought of as an act of God, a punishment, and Narpat seeks to rectify such ignorance. He has also noticed an influx of "Outsiders", squatters who fill empty houses as though they own the land. Narpat is determined to run them out and restore order to a country filled with corruption and graft: "Just like the invaders of India, the Outsiders were introducing a system of values alien to the village."
Overburdened by insidious poverty, Narpat's wife, Dulari, borrows two-hundred dollars from her more successful brother to outfit her children properly for school and to arrange transportation for the older girls. While they are dependant on local bus transportation, Dulari waits anxiously for her daughters to return, content only when she has purchased a safe ride for them. Overruled and his authority threatened, Narpat is furious, believing the walk is beneficial, but then he expects every inconvenience to be turned into a learning experience, always ready with homilies to instruct his children on the virtues of hard work. Narpat feels his wife is acting against his wishes, as he routinely attempts to instill good habits and independence in Jeeves, Chandra, Kala and Shushilla.
Trinidad's anticipated day of independence is August 31, 1962. With all the crooked politicians in the election, Narpat runs for county councilor, his main concern that the cane farmers own the deeds to their lands. Later, building his factory is an act intrinsically out of step in island society, the degree of individuality and authority he assumes an anomaly. His philosophy too large for his world, Narpat is sure to disappoint, but it is in his nature to pursue his dream. While Narpat dedicates himself to fighting corruption and bureaucracy, his wife and children are held hostage to his ideals. Dulari is essentially powerless, her sanity preserved only by "this numbing ritual of sweeping, cooking, cleaning and washing, this silencing of my mind". Meanwhile, Narpat's life is purpose-driven; he is determined to adhere to the high moral path no matter what the cost, the children caught in the emotional underpinnings of futile arguments between their parents. As they mature, the children may question their father's dogmatic approach to existence, but the most telling exchanges are between husband and wife behind the closed door of their bedroom.
Time passes and the island changes but "progress [is] closely allied to treachery". In this landscape, village life, seemingly insignificant in the larger scope of things, is a microcosm for universal principles. The eccentric characters that people these pages, their idiomatic speech and stubbornness, portray a land in the midst of change, corruption a natural outgrowth of its evolution. The voices of Narpat, the Manager, Doon the schoolteacher, Radhica, Dulari and Jeeves fill this tale with the dreams and laments of the ages, a template for humanity, played out in all its sturm and drang. Like ER, but from a Christian perspective!.......2002-02-20
I read a lot of Christian books, but most of them are non-fiction. I'm very selective about the fiction I read - there's just not enough time to read all the good stuff out there! I used to enjoy reading Robin Cook's medical suspense books, so I was glad to see this series of three medical/suspense Christian novels.
This is the third of a series - the first two are Sacred Trust and Solemn Oath. Reading them in order is highly recommended!
This wonderful series is centered around a small-town hospital emergency room in Missouri.
The medical parts ring true for a good reason - Hannah Alexander is a pen name for a husband/wife writing team and the husband is an ER physician! These books will appeal to both men and women, and contain suspense, drama, a little romance and a lot of inspiration. I became very attached to the characters of Lukas, Mercy, Clarence, Ivy, and many more. The story also paints a wonderful picture of God's forgiveness and grace in the character of Theodore and others' responses to him.
The only downside to these books is that there are only 3 of them and I've read them all!
Happy reading!
Likeable characters, well written ...........2002-01-30
This book was very enjoyable in that it held my attention and was quite suspenseful. Also, as a nurse with experience in the ER, I have to attest to the authenticity of this writer's work -- yes it really is like that in the ER. This was also very well written and you could picture the characters in your mind, almost as though they were friends you've known all your life. So why just 4 stars? Almost every page has the characters praying. Some of us, including me, do pray often through the day, but to be honest -- I want to escape through reading. All the praying became a bit too much and the end result was a turn off.
Silent Pledge.......2001-01-21
This is the third novel in an exciting hospital drama series. The beauty of Silent Pledge, and the others in the series, is that it follows numerous characters in the Knolls, Missouri community, making you feel as though you are actually apart of the town! The novel offers drama, excitement, and comedy. I found myself worrying throughout the day about what was going to happen next, and rushing home so that I could see what happened! If you love reading Christian books, and are looking for something exciting and fun, I would totally recommend Silent Pledge!!
