Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

This is the remarkable story of a German soldier who fought throughout World War II, rising from conscript private to captain of a heavy weapons company on the Eastern Front. William Lubbeck, age 19, was drafted into the Wehrmacht in August 1939. As a member of the 58th Infantry Division, he received his baptism of fire during the 1940 invasion of France. The following spring his division served on the left flank of Army Group North in Operation Barbarossa. After grueling marches admidst countless Russian bodies, burnt-out vehicles, and a great number of cheering Baltic civilians, Lubbeck's unit entered the outskirts of Leningrad, making the deepest penetration of any German formation. The Germans suffered brutal hardships the following winter as they fought both Russian counterattacks and the brutal cold. The 58th Division was thrown back and forth across the front of Army Group North, from Novgorod to Demyansk, at one point fighting back Russian attacks on the ice of Lake Ilmen. Returning to the outskirts of Leningrad, the 58th was placed in support of the Spanish "Blue" Division. Relations between the allied formations soured at one point when the Spaniards used a Russian bath house for target practice, not realizing that Germans were relaxing inside. A soldier who preferred to be close to the action, Lubbeck served as forward observer for his company, dueling with Russian snipers, partisans and full-scale assaults alike. His worries were not confined to his own safety, however, as news arrived of disasters in Germany, including the destruction of Hamburg where his girlfriend served as an Army nurse. In September 1943, Lubbeck earned the Iron Cross First Class and was assigned to officers' training school in Dresden. By the time he returned to Russia, Army Group North was in full-scale retreat. Now commanding his former heavy weapons company, Lubbeck alternated sharp counterattacks with inexorable withdrawal, from Riga to Memel on the Baltic. In April 1945 Lubbeck's company became stalled in a traffic jam and was nearly obliterated by a Russian barrage followed by air attacks. In the last chaotic scramble from East Prussia, Lubbeck was able to evacuate on a newly minted German destroyer. He recounts how the ship arrived in the British zone off Denmark with all guns blazing against pursuing Russians. The following morning, May 8, 1945, he learned that the war was over. After his release from British captivity, Lubbeck married his sweetheart, Anneliese, and in 1949 immigrated to the United States where he raised a successful family. With the assistance of David B. Hurt, he has drawn on his wartime notes and letters, Soldatbuch, regimental history and personal memories to recount his four years of frontline experience. Containing rare firsthand accounts of both triumph and disaster, At Leningrad's Gates provides a fascinating glimpse into the reality of combat on the Eastern Front. REVIEWS "... first person account is by William Lubbeck who was drafted in August 1939 and then served through the end of the war in 1945 in the regular German Army. .... detail abounds the book....The combat descriptions give you a taste of Eastern Front warfare.Lubbeck of the 154th Infantry Regiment / 58th Division gives you a shell-hole eye view of events as he works his way up the ranks and goes from victory to victory and then from defeat to defeat....I give Lubbeck credit for touching on the subject of atrocities from the viewpoint of the front line soldier.." Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very personal story.......2007-07-04

Lubbeck tells his personal story of war and survival throughout his stint in Army Group North. Many personal anecdotes are set forth in this story, together with more general recollections of combat and military operations. His story of post-war survival and eventual emigration to the US is moderately interesting and fits into the overall theme of this book. The reader comes to know Lubbeck and his family and friends in a way that is somewhat unique in books of this genre. An easy and good read.

4 out of 5 stars About much more then the war........2007-07-01

This book is not just about William Lubbecks experiences in the German army but about his family life before and after the war. He goes in depth about the hardships his family endured before during and after the Nazi's took power. After the read you really do feel like you know the man and his family. His experiences in the German army take you from the invasion of France on into the out skirts of Leningrad. His battle field descriptions are well written but do not expect them to be action packed like a lot of other books. I really enjoyed how he made it more then just a book about the war but about hardships before and after the it. He speaks a lot about Germany after the war and the horrible life many of the people were forced into behind iron curtain. A great book written by a great man.

3 out of 5 stars Mother of all reviews........2007-06-26

The prevailing sentimentality here may be expected from the "specialty" reader. You won't drive 50 miles to meet a Treblinka survivor or a Russian who was almost starved to death in Leningrad. They are not cool. Congratulations on finding your hero.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read on the Eastern Front Experience.......2007-06-22

I'm only a little over half way through this book but have found it to be one of the best I have read so far on the subject matter. The very frank and personal viewpoint is a nice departure from other books that focus primarily on unit movements, high level strategies, and the viscera of combat.

Occasionally i do wish for more details. the book feels like it could have been longer without suffering loss of readability, but that is no real distraction. The text is very well written and flows easily, you really get the sense you're getting to know the author.

I too was very surprised to find out i live in the same area as Mr Lubbeck. Actually had the chance to speak with him the other day. He was very cordial and forgiving of my somewhat broken attempts at German.

This book is a good reminder that there are two sides to every conflict, and to fully understand historical events, we need to examine and consider both of them.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Eastern Front Memoir Thus Far..........2007-03-28

Of the many accounts of German soldiers' experiences of combat on the Eastern Front published in recent years, "At Leningrad's Gates" is by far the best to date. Not only is this an extremely interesting and well written memoir of combat experience with Army Group North in the campaigns around Leningrad and the retreat back into Germany, "At Leningrad's Gates" also details the difficulties Lubbecke's family faced living in Nazi Germany and after the war under Soviet domination in East Germany. Wilhelm Lubbecke emigrated with his wife and young son first to Canada and then to the United States after the war. Because of this his memoir is unique in that it not only views World War II from the perspective of a German citizen and soldier, but also from the point of view of an American who spent half of his life living, working and raising his children here in America.

      3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-23

I found this book to be a disappointment. It does not add anything substantially new that cannot be found in a variety of other works. I personnally prefer Panzertruppen by Lannoy, though in French and English, it has more information and is vastly better illustrated. The only advantage to this book is the cost, but you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for the specialists!.......2004-04-08

Every single detail about the order of battle of the Panzer Divisions can be found in this book, written by an expert on the field. The introduction and the
details of each division's actions are very useful as well as the wealth of data regarding every German general who ever commanded a Panzer Division!

3 out of 5 stars Not quite good enough.......2003-10-03

To be honest, or even blunt, a book that sells for 125$ should have 1. a better binding (it really feels like it's going to come apart) and 2. Fewer mistakes in it: I don't care that Mr Mitcham is "world renowned" in his field, some one should proof-read what he writes. I found a few technical errors and more than one typos and grammar problems.
That being said, this reference book remains excellent, great to have around when reading related works and double check the info. However, for the mistakes mentionned above, i can't go higher than 3 stars...125$ is pretty steep, but if you are a die hard fan of WWII or a panzer buff, you should get all you need in this one.

      Book Description

With Allied armies poised on the banks of the Rhine, Nazi Germany tottered on the brink of collapse. The ensuing battles on German soil--especially those in the so-called Ruhr Pocket--were as fierce and hard-fought as any in the European theater. Going well beyond previous accounts, Derek Zumbro chronicles this key military campaign from a unique and fresh perspective-that of the defeated German soldiers and civilians caught in the final maelstrom of the war's western front.

Best known for his translation of In Deadly Combat, the bestselling World War II memoir, Zumbro chronicles the relentless assault on the Ruhr Pocket through German eyes, as the Allied juggernaut battered the region's cities, villages, and homes into submission. He tells of children pressed into service by a desperate Nazi regime--and of even more desperate parents trying to save their sons from sacrifice at the eleventh hour. He also tells of unspeakable conditions suffered by foreign laborers, POWs, and political opponents in the Ruhr Valley and of the mass graves that gave Allied soldiers a grisly new understanding of their enemy.

Zumbro also recounts the story of Field Marshal Walter Model's final hours. His eventual suicide effectively ended the existence of the Wehrmacht's once-formidable Army Group B after being pursued, methodically encircled, and finally destroyed by U.S. and British forces. Through interviews with surviving members of Model's former staff, Zumbro has uncovered the attitudes--and harrowing experiences--of beleaguered officers that official records could never convey.

Other interviews with former soldiers reveal the extent to which Allied bombing contributed to the rapid deterioration of German combat effectiveness and tell of civilians begging soldiers to abandon the war. Zumbro's deep research reveals the identities of specific characters discussed in previous works but never identified, describes the final hours of German officers executed for the loss of the bridge at Remagen, and offers new insight into Model's acquiescence to Hitler in military affairs.

By taking us inside the first-hand experiences and memories of Germans from Reichsmarshals to Burgermeisters, Battle for the Ruhr gives a profound and harrowing ground-level view of the enormous destructive power of war.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

      5 out of 5 stars Informative...A Great Historic Read.......2007-07-25

[When looking at the destruction done by the few that ran this small Pennsylvania-sized country, I am always bowled over. And, above and beyond the horrendous dismissal and destruction of the Jews, and the Polish, the Russian, and those who had any kind of alternative lifestyle, and on and on, until we come right down to the Native German People Themselves, these few who were in charge Stole and Destroyed Everything that any of the general populace owned, believed in, or held dear. The level of fear that would cause a people Not to Rise Up against their oppressors must have been terrible. Of course, after reaching a certain level of weakness, there would have been NO way they could have stopped the Nazi leadership as badly as I believe a majority would have liked to.]

~the Greek/Middle English descriptive "Holocaust" did have it right..."to destroy by fire"; "to burn"; "destroy completely"; "mass murder"; "genocide"

Zumbro writes this truly great narrative of the Battle for the Ruhr Valley, the final days, of course, of Germany in World War II, from the viewpoint of the natives, which puts the Allies as the invaders of thier land. Certainly, a Most Interesting Viewpoint, and I must say I thought it works very well. I think we must legitimately recognize that the vast majority of German natives were, in most cases, helpless pawns under the thumbs of the Nazi leadership. So, after having been robbed of Everything they had, including their dignity, from their leaders, the Allies rolled in, destroying their last possessions, their homes and housing, in most cases because the German Field Officers were fearfull NOT to defend towns and villages, knowing they and their troops would be executed by the Nazi leaders. In a great many cases, these people did surrender themselves and their towns to the Allies, to much less damage, etc. It is heart-rending to see the level of loss that these unfortunate country-people, for the most part, suffered. Also, it was most interesting to see the workings/thought processes of the collapsing Nazi leadership in Berlin. This was also recently shown vividly to me by the movie "The Downfall" a couple years ago. I feel that Mr. Zumbro has certainly done his homework for this book, and also, he has not glossed over the wrong-doings that the Allies did, either, putting it right out there, as it should be, that we, ourselves, in many cases did wrong and committed crimes against these people that should not have been done.

A Great, Informative Book. I Highly Recommend IT! ~operabruin

4 out of 5 stars Starts with a Bang and Ends With A Dud.......2007-03-05

I served in the Army in the area that this book takes place (Buren, south of Paderborn), long after it took place, and enjoyed learning what happened to the towns and cities nearby. This book locks you in early on and is quite a page turner. My biggest fault is that it falls in the last 75-100 pages with what basically becomes the same story with a new town name. Something like, town prepares...Germans run....Allies roll in....next town....town prepares..... Nonetheless, I would recommend the book to others, as it was recommended to me by another who served in the same area before I did.

4 out of 5 stars The Impression of one Familiar with Wuppertal:.......2007-01-22

The main problem with writing a book like this is that most of the oral sources are now dead. This last September, I attended the Knohl family re-union, in Wuppertal, and there was only one man there who could remember anything about the battle for the Ruhr. He would have turned nine in 1945.

Our Uncle Herbert(Knohl) was in the US Army CIC; and although he resented his tour of duty in the US Army, he talked about almost nothing else for the next fifty-three years. One of the things he mentioned was his shooting of two, high-ranking Nazi officials from Cologne. He told me his commander--a Texas Ranger was duly impressed; so much so, that he sent our uncle to Wuppertal to look at a prison facility there.

While there, Uncle Herb met his father(our grandfather) on the street, and found that his parents had had nothing to eat for some time. He was able to get them food. My grandparents belonged to the Gemarkekirche in Barmen, which was quite notable in its opposition to Hitler. In fact, there was mention of a "death list", and that our grandparents' names were on it.

I realize the author had quite a bit of information to cover, and he had to cover--mainly--the capture of the Ruhr, by the allies--and didn't have space to cover much of the aftermath. However, the author does mention a number of atrocities, by the Nazis, against the slave laborers, Soviet POW's, and those who dissented from the Nazi way of doing things.

The author also mentions thefts, and atrocities commited by our side--which our Uncle Herb mentioned, but have been under-reported by the literature, until recently.

In short, the book covers quite a bit of material; and I would recommend it to anybody interested in the era.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING Book, but not for everyone.......2006-11-10

The U-Boat Commander's Handbook is a HANDBOOK. Don't expect a historical narrative here, but as long as you understand that this is a technical manual about every tactic to be used in almost every situation conceivable for a U-Boat commander in 1943, and thats what you are looking to read, it is AMAZING.

Pictures have been added, as well as a forward and a dedication, however other than that, the book is a complete diplication of the 1943 Handbook.

I highly recommend this very rare purchase for all enthusiasts of the U-Boat war and the Battle for the Atlantic.

Who knows, it may even improve you game in Silent Hunter 3 if you are into that.

Speical thanks to Amazon for carrying this particular item as I couln't find it elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Did not hold my interest.......2006-07-27

Book was written as a primer for the Uboat commander. I have read many books about the Uboat war and thought that this book would give me some insight into the Uboat commanders' thinking and training, but found the book very boring.
      Save your money

4 out of 5 stars An interesting book for U-Boat simmers.......2006-03-10

This handbook is a wartime translation of the official handbook of German U-boat commanders: it explain tactics and reveals a lot of technical details about submarine war in WWII, but some passages apears difficult to understand without a specific background (also because the translation is not up-to-date with current terminolgy). I think that some footnotes could resolve the problem.
The edition quality is poor (for example a page is duplicated) and it seems that original illustrations have been omitted, but the book contains some nice photos of a Type VII interiors and some action shots of Atlantic war episodes.
I think it would be very interesting for "Silent Hunter III" players, even if there are not so many concepts suitable for a simulation.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting historic document.......2005-10-03

It's a real interesting historic document about u-boot tactics (navigation, attack, escape).
This book is a summa of all the rules employed by u-boot captains that guaranteed them many successes in their oceanic patrols, developed by German Navy on the experiences in WWI and in the beginnings of WWII.
It has been used by italian navy too (see "Uomini sul fondo" by Giorgio Giorgerini).

5 out of 5 stars Great for gamers and wwii naval enthusiasts alike........2004-12-26

This is the 1943 edition of a German u-boat commanders manual. It outlines all the different battle drills which a submarine may have to execute. All tactical situations are covered, with no-nonsense advice.

Whether you like submarine simulations or just like wwii naval history, this is hands down the best $9.00 you will ever spend.

        Book Description

From Retreat to Defeat is a unique insight into the last desperate years of the German Army at war on the Eastern Front 1943-45.

On the vast steppes of the Soviet Union, it describes how the German Army together with the elite mountain troops and Luftwaffe field divisions played a decisive role in trying to stem the rout along the disintegrating front lines. Drawing on previously rare and unpublished photographs with in-depth captions, the book provides an absorbing analysis of this traumatic period of the war.

It reveals in detail how the beginning of the end began at the battle of Kursk, and how this massive operation led to the Red Army recapturing huge areas of the Soviet Union and bleeding white the German armies it struck. Despite the adverse situation in which the German Army was placed, soldiers were still infused to fight to the bitter end and attempt to build new lines of defense. But as the Red Army launched its long-awaited summer offensive in 1944, code-named `Operation Bagration`, the book reveals how the German Army were forced to withdraw under the constant hammer blows of ground and air bombardments. Those German forces that survived the artillery barrages, the onslaught of the tank armadas, and mass infantry assaults, streamed back from the battlefield and fought vicious battles through the Baltic states, Byelorussia, and built up new defenses along the Vistula in Poland.

As the final months of the war were played out on the Eastern Front it depicts how the German Army, with diminishing resources, withdrew across a devastated Reich and fought out the last battles with party militia forces around a bombed and blasted Berlin.

4 out of 5 stars An ideal reference book.......2007-07-03

In one of my books on the Afrika Korps, I saw a black and white photo of a German soldier handling a field telephone. What struck me the most were his strange boots and I often wondered what he was wearing.
Now, thanks to "German Army Uniforms of World War II", I can see on page 67 those type of boots in superb detail as well as in colour. I also found out that he was wearing the "....original high tropical boots, the first of their kind among the world's armies. The time-consuming lacing made them unpopular. The tropical boots, in both calf- and ankle-length versions, will be found with and without hobnails....".
Further, in an Antique shop in Estonia, I once saw a bag with an outer flap covered with hairy animal hide. I have now discovered on page 31 of this fine book that this bag is an M34 knapsack pack and ".... the body was made of canvas in various shades of brown or green; the outer flap was normally covered with unshaven calf- or horse-hide, though pre- war plain canvas flaps are known. The knapsack was issued to all dismounted troops, but was not generally worn in combat, being left behind with the unit baggage transport".
I look forward to making more such pleasant discoveries in this fine book.
Although I intend to stick to collecting weapons of the 2 world wars, this book has enabled me to get a wholesome picture of the fine uniforms, webbing and personal items issued to a German soldier of WW2.
