5 out of 5 stars Free to Love.......2007-01-05

This book addresses women's issues on so many levels from rejection, abortion, divorce and it gives direction on how to be free from the baggage so you can truly be able to love and be 'lovable'.
Awesome. I purchased several copies for numerous friends.

5 out of 5 stars seek God before looking at a man.......2005-08-31

a must book for any single woman desiring a relationship with a man. you must be serious because there is a contract in this book. after I signed the contract, i became satisfied with Jesus first. I still had a desire for a relationship, however, i was not desperate. This book taught me how to love men as a result.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading for Single and Married Women.......2005-07-21

This book was an excellent guide as to how to prepare yourself for your "Knight in Shining Armor", according to God's words. It was easy to read and very helpful when trying to find out who you are as person, before you can know how to have a mate. I recommend that all single and engaged females buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Wake-Up Call.......2005-07-02

This book was and is a real awakening. It makes you realize that you can still go out and have fun while still being in accordance with GOD's plan. Every woman should read this book of she feels that in order to be happy she needs a man by her side or when she gets one her life will be full of happiness.

1 out of 5 stars God as a vending machine.......2004-02-15

This book was recommended to me by a friend. After the first chapter, I was sceptical. It asks you to sign a paragraph stating that you want to set aside 6 months to prepare yourself for your future husband. It seems as though the entire book is built around you doing things so that you can get a husband. Becoming a better person is just a means to an end - getting a man. While all of the suggested things to work through are great, and a lot of what 'Bunny' has to say is good, the reason for doing them is not. I believe one should work on their character so that they can become more godly and Christ-like, not so that after putting in 6 months of time, God will act like a vending machine and give that person a husband.

5 out of 5 stars Great coffee table book.......2007-08-09

I bought this book as a birthday gift for my dad (A big weapons fan) He loved it. Great pictures and easy read with a lot of information. It's a big book, a really nice coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2007-03-26

I bought this book as a source book for my D&D games, not only did it meet that goal to perfection but it was actually very interesting and a pleasure to read.

The pictures are great and really give you an idea of size and weight. And speaking of weight, most weapons have weights listed.

Great book, highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars This book is VERY well illustrated.......2007-03-16

I read this book at my public library, and now every time I go there, I just HAVE to read it. It tells the history of weapons like no other book before. The pictures are detailed and the descriptions are very informative yet easy for the smallest child to read. This is NOT one of those books that bores you out after a while. I even stick to the Handgun section, and I read it every time I see it. I'll bet there is no guide to weapons better than this book. Don't just consider it. Make it necessary for long trips.

5 out of 5 stars super .......2007-03-09

I first got this book from the libray and liked it so much that I deceided to try and find it on amazon and guess what they had it so I ordered 3 for myself and my sons thanks

5 out of 5 stars Great reference book.......2007-02-13

The pictures in the book really help illustrate the info. There is no way this book can be all-inclusive, but it does give a great overview of weapons throughout history.

This is a classic work not only on this history of armour in the 14th century, but of a key battle and the wound pathology relating to victims of the battle.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unique work.......2005-10-08

This book contains a wealth of knowledge about medieval armour and the effects of weapons. The pictures are fantastic, skeletons buried in their armour, rarely does one get to see how armour was actually worn. The breakdowns and detail of actual armour construction is immaculate and enables any competant armourer to reproduce the examples shown. The detail from an archeologist's point of view was a little too in depth for my interest but if you are that way inclined then great. Only issue I have is the "analysis" of some of the wounds seen, Mr. Thordeman seems to imply that this battle was unusual in some way, that the combatants fought with unusual fury. He sites one incident of one combatant having both legs severed by a single blow as an indication of some great fury and intensity. I only disagree as there are very few examples of medieval battle wound pathology to compare the Wisby corpses. It seems that the author is looking at the battle from too detached a viewpoint, forgetting that killing was the purpose of the people who showed up to battle that day. This is a small detail but supposition as to the mental states of combatants, by someone who has no first hand experience of battle is unproductive. Otherwise a great book.

5 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece!.......2003-02-27

This book has a very special meaning to me since I'm from the town of Wisby(nowdays spelled Visby). Born and raised on the island Gotland and lived most of my life thete. I'v built several of these coats of armour and so far everyone I've tried on have been of satisfatcion. The book is so far the best resource book I've ever found. I have for a long time tried to find the first edition, but IF you can find it somewhere it's incredibly expensive. So jus imagine my joy when I saw there was a reissue! And very soon I'm going to be proud owner of this masterpiece...
The book is really easy to use and have exceptional drawings and scetches. Transforming the scale of the objects in the book to original size is really easy and there's a lot of information i general. At last a recommendation for all you SCA-fighters out there. Try out armour no.6 and no.9 because they give very good protection and are comfortable to wear.

5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2001-10-30

I've made armor using the diagrams of existing armor types from this book. I didn't much care for some of the strapping arrangements described, so I designed my own. (Hey, this is the armor the regular fighters left behind - Wisby was defended by the teens and the oldsters to judge from the age of the bodies. This suggests the men of prime fighting-age were elsewhere, with their primary armor.) It worked, well, and protected me in combat. And the illustrations and text were clear, clear, clear.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2001-10-20

This is the complete version of the orginal book all in one book, not two sets like the first. There is just a little intro added by Price. BUY THIS BOOK! It has wonderful information on the skeletal finds, plus it shows the orginal armor that was found, sketches of it, and recreations done by Bengt and company. I am thrilled they republished this book! It is impossible to find the orginal two volume set.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars not a comprehensive handbook.......2006-06-28

mr. yumoto's work is very descriptive and pictures fill the pages more than text does.

"Samurai Sword a Handbook" lacks an analytic quality that would bring togheter the social, historical, technical and martial dimensions of the nihonto.

last but not least, such an important - and relatively undocumented - subject as care and maintenance of japanese blades is simply and vaguely evoked in two pages that make up a ridiculous chapter.

all in all, yumoto's work is too old to be satisfying to comtemporary readers in search of a meaningful, concise handbook which would explain rather than describe.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD SOURCE.......2006-03-17

A PERFECT SOURCE WHO WANTS TO LEARN ABAUT JAPANESE SWORDS AND THEIR HISTORY

3 out of 5 stars confused..........2006-03-03

I finished reading it yesterday. It is too much for beginner and not enough for intermediate or even expert...

It is definitely usefull for future reference in terms of finding more about your sword or swords you want to buy and using some of the criterias. Photos are B&W and crappy and references text-to-drawings are badly organized.

What is strongly missing is types of sword damage, how to eveluate type of damage and find it on blades etc...

I dont know when book was written but some information also seems bit obsolete...

If the book was hardcover, had two times more pages, colored photos to go with drawings, better organized and have more information, I would give 5. Now I give 3 of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Great first sword book.......2005-10-27

This is a good, short overview of the basics of Japanese Swords. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Shedding the Masks.......2007-07-02

I give most of my clients a copy of the Knight in Rusty Armor early on in our meeting schedule. I feel it helps people to start to shed, or at least understand, their protective masks. Eighty percent of my clients tell me that it was one of the more introspective and inciteful books that they've ever read. As a graphic example of shedding, one of my physician clients told me that he no longer wears a white coat when visiting patients in the hospital as he recognizes that was his way of demonstrating his authority, and to some degree to separate himself from the patient. However, there are other clients who, quite puzzled, ask me why I suggested that they read the book.
Another client read chapters of the book each night with his 7 year old son and would then discuss what each chapter meant to them. He was intrigued with the purity and incite his son had which caused him to dig a lot deeper into his own feelings.

All in all, I can't imagine very many of my clients not reading The Knight. It's a great tool for me to use and a valuable lesson for them to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Word cannot explain the wonders of thsi book.......2007-03-28

I received this as a gift in the Spanish version - then later purchased it in English and read it again. It has great insight on the meaning of life and how many people get lost or caught up in the un-important and in the process they become prisoners by their own doing. Being a God believing person I personally chose to replace 3 of the main characters as follows:
Merlin = God
Rebecca = The Holy Spirit (that speaks to us)
Squirrel = a friend
Either way whether you choose to read this book - it has profound messages hidden throughout. The read is almost on a third grade level so you can share it with your children.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have since given it as a gift to over a dozen people. Each person was very touched by at least one element in the story. This story is enjoyable to read and teaches many lessons without being preachy. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic overview of the topic.......2003-09-30

This is THE book that I wish every SCA armorer and fighter had on his/her shelf and more importantly in the shop. It is a solid reference for every period activly covered by the Society. This book, with its excellent images and information, is always a good source of inspiration and documentation for any armor project that I take on. This book has raised my level of expectation of my own work and any other armorers work I come across. Its a must have for anyone who puts hammer to steel and wants to call it armor.

5 out of 5 stars Best single volume reference ever.......2000-06-14

I think most everyone will agree that if there is one book on Medieval arms and amour that you buy, this is the one to get. I covers the complete history of the knight with hundreds of beautiful pictures of armour. My #1 reference. It also includes rare inside shots of some armour, and construction section.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent source book!.......1999-12-30

Lavishly illustrated guide takes you through the development of armor and knighthood from beginning to end. We use it daily as a source for inspiration at albionarmorers.com.

4 out of 5 stars A fine book for those into Armour.......1999-12-29

This book is really great--full of pictures and medieval art concerning armour. The chapters each cover a century in the development of armour. It takes a very archeological, historica approach to arms and armour. That's good because it makes an informative text, but I think the language a bit confusing at times, and not enough detail at other times. But it is a great book, for its pictures if nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......1999-12-12

Wow!

That is all I can say. This book is the one that proved that good visuals do matter in history books. Arms and Armor of the Medieval Knight has it all: types of armor, weapons, historic data of where and when the weapon was used... but most important of all , VISUALS! Hundreds upon hundreds of page-size, full color photos of actual suits of armor, not crude drawings and diagrams that other books on the subject offer.

Also, I have to say that the texts is incredibly well-written an precise, the data is vast and accurate, and all the sources are quoted perfectly. This is the definitive book on the subject.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Overrated, atrociously written.......2007-09-12

Let me preface this by saying, if I could give this book zero stars I would. This is the first book that I have read that I have considered burning.

There is very little in this book worth reading. I had had Armor on my list of books to read for quite some time as many consider this to be a "classic" of science fiction. I don't see anything that makes this book a classic.

Firstly, Steakleys writing style is horrible. Not only is it horrible, everything in the book feels so amatuerish. The characters are one dimensional, the plot is both unbelievable, boring and uninspired, the narrative is extremely disjointed for simply no good reason, he falls back on crutches far too often and the only scenes that develop any of the minor bit characters are appalling (the dog torture scene in particular made me want to kill the stupid character relating it).

Steakley also seems to conveniently cop out of any situation that requires real story telling ability. Anytime a scene is going to develop a main character, require some thought and analysis to write and have the chance for real dialogue, Steakley glosses over it with what amounts to a "so they told me" or a "so I convinced them." It's sloppy, amatuerish and unsatisfying.

This book really has nothing to offer. Don't waste your time or money on it. Instead pick up The Forever War, Starship Troopers and Old Man's War. You will have get much greater insight into what it is like to fight in a meaningless war, be prompted to think and have more fun. The books also read far better than Armor.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-08-14

I really enjoyed this book. I have read it several times. Especially early on around page nine around the 4th paragraph. I enjoy that in my quieter moments.

I wish a sequal was written sometime...

5 out of 5 stars Just do it.......2007-06-05

A friend of mine loaned a copy of this to me when I was 17. I'm 37 now and have read it every year since then.

I have NEVER, repeat, NEVER read the same book that many times in my life. Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles" comes close, but not close enough.

This book literally DRAGS you into Steakley's universe and refuses to let you return to reality. This was the first book that ever made me nervous while reading it. Steakley's style of storytelling is relentless and unforgiving. I could virtually FEEL Felix's anguish and torment as well as Jack Crow's desperation.

This novel could be turned into a spectacular film (IF it's done right! Remember what happened to the "Battlefield Earth" movie? God, I still get sick to my stomach when I think about it).

Many complain that it's too much like Starship Troopers and on many levels, it is, but Steakley takes the concept of Troopers and puts his own spin on it. The result is a unique narrative with two seemingly unrelated plotlines that converge near the end to form a goose-bump enducing climax.

Think "Saving Private Ryan" meets "Aliens".

I usually read this one with the music of Tangerine Dream played at a level just above the hearing threshold. The result is an eerie journey into Steakley's harsh universe.

5 out of 5 stars War.......2007-05-13

as a combat veteran of vietnam i believe this book captures the emotion and action of war better then most sci-fi books and most books on war. i am a big fan of heinlein and have read most of his books and i do not feel this is a rip off of star ship troopers. where starship troopers is about becoming a citizen by being a good boy/girl scout with guns, Steakly's armor is the reality of war, with good people dying because of underestimating the enemy, politics, and military leadership that doesnt seem to learn, along with soldiers who just want to get home alive. i recommend this book highly.

4 out of 5 stars Pirates of the Galaxy: Curse of the Black Armor.......2007-04-15

One of the two main characters in this book bears an uncanny similarity to Johnny Depp's character in the Pirates of the Caribbean, Jack Sparrow. Both are pirates. Both are down on their luck and without a crew at the start of the adventure. Both are exceptionally skilled fighters with enough wit and intelligence to get them out of one scrape after another. Both have an apparently enigmatic past and a legendary reputation that the story only coyly alludes to. Oh, and the character in this book happens to be named Jack Crow. Coincidence ??

The other main character is Felix. He wears a black powered armor and slaughters the insectoid enemy by the thousands ... almost single-handedly. Yet his killer weapon is not his near-indestructible plasteel suit: it's his inner alter-ego called the Engine. Where Felix is a man rightly frightened by the horror of war, the Engine within is a cold-blooded war machine that refuses to die. The adventures of this almost schizoid serial killer alone would make for a fascinating story, but Steakley is not content with this. Felix's thread climaxes with a dramatic twist that is completely unexpected, utterly jaw-dropping, and entirely satisfying.

At first, it is almost impossible to see how the Jack Crow and Felix storylines can have any relevance to each other. The author does his best to accentuate the contrasts between the two. Felix's story is told in the third person, and is a stark protrayal of the fear, confusion and madness of war - with violence so wanton the reader (like Felix) soon becomes numb to it. Jack's story is told in the first person, and laced with grim humor, colorful characters and beautiful women. Felix's story is comparable to the opening of 'Saving Private Ryan'. Jack's would be more like a Bogart-type film noir (but played by Johnny Depp with a bandanna on his head). It is only gradually that the two storylines are seen to converge. This is good, allowing each character to be fleshed out properly so that the reader develops a certain sympathy for each. And so the finale when the storylines do merge becomes all the more gratifying because of it (woops, is this a semi-spoiler ?). Suddenly, all the little hints dropped by the author throughout the book leading up to the ending make sense. Remember the movie 'The Sixth Sense'? This is similar ... but better (I guessed the ending of that movie within 5 minutes, but I didn't with this book until almost the end).

I bought this book several years ago, but it sat at the back of my bookshelf gathering dust. It isn't a famous 'must read' book even in most SF circles, and the author is not a 'big name'. I only just 'rediscovered' it and read it recently. And then I found out it was a much better book than I could have imagined. As said above, the characters (at least the few main ones) are well developed and interesting, the story is good enough to keep the pages turning relentlessly, and the ending is mind-blowing. OK, so this book is not great literature a la Dickens or Tolstoy. Nor is it really clever Science Fiction following the Asimov/Clarke/Heinlein tradition. It's simply highly entertaining fiction and a satisfying read. If this were a movie, it wouldn't be an Oscar winner. It would a rip-roaring, fun adventure - just like Pirates of the Caribbean again.

I would recommend this book to friends in the following categories:
- SF (Sci-Fi) fans who like their stories exciting and eventful, not plodding and overly cerebral (where the author indulges in a masturbatory expose of his vision of the future but forgets to tell a story ... sound familiar?)
- aficionados of Mickey Spillane and Elmore Leonard novels (or Guy Ritchie and Tarantino films) who are game for a romp in space
- fans of (neo)military movies like Starship Troopers, Robocop, Thin Red Line, Platoon who can appreciate the movies NOT for the bloody thrills and violence but for the great narrative elements and the clever 'message'

Book Description

Abandoned by a cruel fate, lovely, thoroughly modern Dougless Montgomery lay weeping upon a cold tombstone in an English church. Suddenly, as if in answer to her prayers, the most extraordinary man appeared.

He was Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck...and according to his tombstone he had died in 1564. Tall, broad of shoulder, attired in gleaming silver and gold, he was magnificent. Drawn to his side by a bond so sudden and compelling it overshadowed reason, Dougless knew that Nicholas was nothing less than a miracle: a man who would not seek to change her, who found her perfect, fascinating, just as she was.

Yet she could not imagine how strong were the chains that tied them to the past...or the grand adventure that lay before them....

5 out of 5 stars A Man's Opinion.......2007-09-25

Yes I'm a man and I read the book.... (brief pause), now if the teasing has ceased I must tell you I really liked it. Now the real reason I'm admitting my disgrace. Quite frankly, your men might like this one too, and it might just spice up your relationship. I really enjoyed putting myself in the man's shoes, learning about a more manly time, and enjoying the story in general. I didn't even realize the new appreciation of women I was getting. After I read it I kept my enthusiasm to myself (of course), but began feeling more intense about the girl who made me read it. I'm an Airborne Infantryman in the 82nd by the way, not a weakling by any stretch. So if you want to share a book with your man and have something new to discuss over dinner, tell him to do a soldier a favor. Oh yea, ladies you might like it too. As you were

2 out of 5 stars Needs a better heroine .......2007-08-29

I kind of liked this book and other times I wanted to strangle the main character. The book started out so well. She's stuck in a bad relationship and a knight in shining armor comes to save her. There were just so many ways to approach this theme but Jude Deveraux took the really long and painful route.

The main character was so annoying I wanted to stop reading at times and finally did after that weird Calculator scene. I felt bad for Dougless in the beginning and wanted her to find her happiness like in all romance novels. But as I continued to read, I started to feel like she really deserved crappy boyfriends for being so damn stupid. She's too emotional and weak and her only winning characteristic is that she likes to help people. That's it? That's what makes a playboy fall in love with her? She's whiny and she cried too much in the beginning of the book. She's weak and I can't stand her indecisiveness. She doesn't know what she wants and I wanted to hurt her for even considering going back to her lousy boyfriend. She's an idiot. She's a jealous, petty person and she's always muttering sarcastically under her breath. She thinks she's so witty and I just wanted to roll my eyes.

The biggest problem I had with her was that she was pretty selfish. Nicholas needed her help and all she could think about was her own needs and relationships. His past was hundreds of years ago to her, but it just yesterday to him. She acted like the past didn't matter because it was too long ago and was very insensitive to him. I couldn't understand why he would ever be attracted to her. All she can think about half the time is finding a man and getting married. That's like her only goal in life. Anyway, since I really couldn't connect with her or even like her, I didn't like the book very much and eventually stopped reading.

Aside from Dougless, I liked all the other characters and thought the author's writing style was pretty decent. It's the main character that that made the book flawed, which pretty much killed the book for me. I couldn't finish this book and I probably won't read another book from hers seeing how everyone's already said this was her best one. Other people might enjoy this book though if they're into that type of heroine.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story.......2007-08-11

I absolutely loved this book!!!! I have read it several times and have the cassette. I also purchased the cassette for my niece, she loved it then read the book. I know the story is far fetched but it is still fun and the romance is wonderful. Don't we all wish. I don't understand the reviewers who don't like it. I loved it and you won't be sorry you purchased it. Fantastic Beach Read or listen to in the car going down.

2 out of 5 stars Not for me..........2007-07-27

I only picked up this novel because a friend threatened my life--and I nearly ended hers after reading it. I've read a novel from this author before and didn't like her style of writing; it's written with too many facts, and not enough emotion, which is what I look for in a ROMANCE novel. I want to connect with characters, empathize and weep and ache with them since I'll be spending so much time with them anyway--this author does not provide that, and although this tale is interesting, it falls flat due to lack of character/reader affinity.

The heroine seems very likable, although you only get to know her in a single wave-length way, and the hero sounds dashing, although he's sometimes parched, I did like the way the story circled back to the beginning, giving it wholesome synchronicity--but I think that was it.

And the ending...The only word I can think of to describe myself, especially after not enjoying the book so much anyway, is inconsolable.

4 out of 5 stars Could have been great!.......2007-06-14

This was my first book by Jude Deveraux. The first half was great but something happens in the middle that makes it as so the whole story is starting from the beginning and I didn't like how the relationship was rushed during the second half. The ending was very touching. If I wasn't on anti-depressants I probably would have bawled my eyes out. :)

Its very interesting and detailed in all its descriptions. It could keep me entertained for months, learned a great deal about all kinds of weapons, great buy if interested in weapons

5 out of 5 stars Splendid!.......2007-05-28

Wow, I picked up this book from my local library a few years back and fell in love with it! I ended up keeping it for 9 months and read from it almost every night while in bed. It's a wonderful and interesting tome of knowledge that has a great deal of information on all types of weaponry (extremely) old and new. Large diagrams and well written articles show and describe basic concepts, and usually later go into greater detail. This is a wonderful starting point for anyone who is interested in weaponry of any sort, as you find your favorite sections and then run back to your library (pay the hefty late fee, completely worth it!) and pick up more books on that specific area.

I'd even say this is a wonderful coffee table book, it's just that interesting! If you are at all interested by weaponry this is THE book to purchase. You won't regret it!

If you are interested in Military History buy any version of this book you can find.

As a lifelong student of military history I highly recommend this book. For me it is the "how it works" of weaponry and warfare. This book offers excellent diagrams and explanations. I often refer to it when looking for references to arms. Buy it - you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Please stop buying this book.......2007-01-13

I have lost all patience. Please stop buying this excellent book now otherwise I am afraid we will never see an updated version of what is actually a 20 year old text. Time and weapons have moved on. Even older systems coverage can be improved--there is not a decent picture of the old mundane RPG still being used to good effect. Publisher--get busy!

4 out of 5 stars Good overall..........2006-12-10

I first found this book in a library 3 years ago, but I will never forget this book. I'm getting this on December 14, 2006. I think that this book is a very interesting book. I read it 46 times already(all 300 pages, and I never got boring)! Although I read it 46 times already, I think that it talks too much about medieval and primitive weapons. But all together, I think that it is the best book. I got about 80 percent of my knowledge on weapons from this book! If you like weapons, or want to study then, I think that you should choose this book.
