Wonderful reference guide with full colour photographs of SS tunics and SS related gear such as insignia, cufftitles, daggers etc... Includes B&W photos as a historical reference point, very useful for those contemplating the purchase of any SS related items or those restoring uniforms. A must for any SS enthusiast!
The best SS uniform book out there.......2002-01-05
A must have for the collector. A.Hayes shows everthing from Uniforms, Helmets, Weapons, Musical Intrustments to childrens toys. He also shows period photographs not seen before. He does not fill the book up with the history of the SS where you can get anywhere else and concentrates on the colored photos.

I though the pictures in this book were outstanding. The text that goes with them is somewhat brief however, and I would not recomend this particular book unless you have a solid base knowledge of SS Uniforms in general. It expects you to know the basics. But if you are farmiliar with SS Uniforms, then by all means this is a highly recomended addition to your collection.

This is the most complete reference of SS camoflage patterns and clothing I have seen. It includes several patterns (plane, palm, blurred edge, dot, oak leaf and LIEBERMUNSTER ), as well as extensive coverage of the garments utilizing these designs (zeltbahn, smocks, M-44, panzer, hats, mitts, parkas, anoraks and tropical clothing).The book contains hundreds of clear color photos and documents the development of each pattern and piece. An excellent buy!

one of the best if not the best works on the camo patterns of the waffen-ss that I have come across not only in american lit. but as well as german sources. also is a very periodical look to arms, equipment as well as unit insignia.

Great reference for reenactors and model makers.......2007-02-13
This book is a great reference and helped my knowledge when making models of German soldiers. I was of the impression that the Waffen SS used basically the same uniforms of the German Army. This is quite untrue. The Waffen SS had slightly different uniforms than the Heer (Army) and many of the uniforms, such as the excellent DOT 44 pattern, were some of the most superior uniform patterns that have been used in Europe and have only been recently been surpassed in quality and effectiveness by the new US military digital patterns.
A model maker or reenactor will see pages of people wearing the correct uniform and the appropriate field gear, such as the correct helmet in a particular period. Note, it would be extremely wrong to show a WWI helmet - an M1917 "coal scuttle" - with a 44 dot pattern uniform. It's true the early Waffen SS used anything the Heer was not using in the beginning. However, post 1943 the Waffen equipment was top-of-the-line and actually better than typical Heer units. However, the point of this book is to help model makers or reenactors. In this the book is most effective.
The makers of this book went through pains to make sure the photos are of top quality. Also, there is ample references to back up what was written in this book.
I highly endorse this book. It will give model makers, reenactors, and students of the Waffen SS a good reference of the Waffen SS uniforms that were worn in WWII.
Note, this book is pure reference. It has no statements of political points of view nor does it offer any operational history of the Waffen SS units. It is just a book about uniforms and the individual field gear for the soldiers.

The main reason for so high value are very good and high quality photos. Many of them present oryginal insignia, so it is possible to identify per analogy some in my collection.

I agree with the other reviewer, not much writing here. But this book is a HOME RUN with pictures - probably one of the best WW2 uniform books I've owned or seen. There is a tremendous amount of content, more than enough to justify its cost.
Great photos, context lacking.......2005-01-20
Color photographs of rare uniform items, associated insignia, and field equipment used in the Wehrmacht's tropical campaigns are outstanding. Moreover, the selection of period black-and-white photographs is exceptional - nearly all of them are unpublished and all should be of interest to both the historian and militaria collector. Unfortunately, a number of their accompanying captions contain errors or omissions, and often fail to provide context of a respective unit's operations in the North African or Mediterranean campaigns. I realize that this work is not intended to be an operational history or order-of-battle tabulation, but found that the lack of more background perspective was dissatisfying. I haven't yet seen the companion volume, which covers documents and paper items - perhaps it provides the historical framework that is lacking in Volume 1.

Excellent Painting guide.......2007-02-15
I paint mostly WW2 28mm miniatures many of which are SS. The SS were an elite branch of the axis army. Many wore dotted camo patterns and this book has many close-up pics of the patterns so one can recreate them. Very nice addition to my collection. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the uniforms of WW2.

I needed to fill my library with a high quality comprehensive look at the Waffen SS uniforms- preferably in color, and boy did I get it. This book may not be the thickest but it is outstandingly high quality packed with sharp, full color pictures, showing in detail the uniforms using reenactors with correct weaponry in plausible scenarios. It is truly an awsome catch if you are interested in the Waffen SS's variety of uniforms or even for the cool reenactments of their lives.
Great reference book.......2007-01-09
I paint WWII miniatures as a hobby and I found this book to be an excellent source of color photo reference of period uniforms from which to base my painting on. The book offers great color photos of a wide variety of different uniforms as well as providing historical detail as to the issue, use, production, etc. I highly recommend this book for anyone with similar hobby needs or just interested in the period in general.

This book, Waffen-SS Uniforms: In Colour Photographs is, without a doubt, a MUST HAVE for any WWII library! Although one of the earlier reviewers stated that the uniforms were mostly reproductions, he is wrong, as pretty much everything in this book is real! You won't get this kind of great colour photos in any book this cheaply -- if you don't buy it, you're an idiot!

Though a good knowledge of SS Uniforms would be heplfull, this is certianly the best book you can get to start with if you're interested in learning more about SS Cammo uniforms. The pictures are very good (about the best I've seen in a book about this subject), and the less informed won't get bogged down with too many details. If you're looking for a comprehensive work about the specific paterns and evolution there of, you might want something else. The best book for this type of research is expensive, but well worth the money.

A MUST HAVE book on the subject of SS uniforms.......2007-10-02
If you've been looking for a book that offers BOTH wartime photographs AND multi angle/ close up studies of uniforms from actual collections, this book (and the two other volumes from that trilogy) is EXACTLY what you need. More than just a splendid coffee table book, it is an outstanding source of information about the history/construction and regulation for each and every variety of uniform issued to the various branches of the SS ( both BEFORE and DURING WW2) and it is worth every single penny I invested in it. As a militaria dealer, I could simply not afford not to add it to my collection. If you are interested by that subject and don't have those 3 books, then you are missing an essential resource. If on the other hand you want to know the subject in depth and do not plan to buy each and every book on the market, you have to get THAT serie. My only regret is that Mr. Michael D. Beaver is no longer among us to share his amazing knowledge of German Militaria.
