Book Description
A world-renowned child psychiatrist offers a groundbreaking new perspective on how stress and violence affect children's brains--and how they can be helped to heal
What happens when a young brain is traumatized? How does terror, abuse, or disaster affect a child's mind--and how can that mind recover?
Child psychiatrist Bruce Perry has helped children faced with unimaginable horror: genocide survivors, murder witnesses, kidnapped teenagers, and victims of family violence. In The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, he tells their stories of trauma and transformation through the lens of science, revealing the brain's astonishing capacity for healing. Deftly combining unforgettable case histories with his own compassionate, insightful strategies for rehabilitation, Perry explains what exactly happens to the brain when a child is exposed to extreme stress-and reveals the unexpected measures that can be taken to ease a child's pain and help him grow into a healthy adult. Through the stories of children who recover-physically, mentally, and emotionally-from the most devastating circumstances, Perry shows how simple things like surroundings, affection, language, and touch can deeply impact the developing brain, for better or for worse.
In this deeply informed and moving book, Bruce Perry dramatically demonstrates that only when we understand the science of the mind can we hope to heal the spirit of even the most wounded child.

Food for thought.......2007-09-02
The book lives up to its fascinating title. Perry has worked for years with traumatized and neglected children and his take on dealing with them is based on research showing how the brain develops and the impact of neglect and abuse on it. In other words, if a child is abused or neglected in the first year of life (approximately), physical changes take place in the brain or rather, neurological connections that should be made, are not. (This is a vast simplification.) So as a child gets older and begins exhibiting antisocial behaviors that land him or her in special classes or even mental hospitals, it is not because he or she prefers to act this way but because the child's brain is unable to function in a way that enables him or her to become socialized. Perry, having done a great deal of research on this subject himself, spits in the eye of a lot of "accepted" practices when it comes to children's mental health. I'm always interested to read views that oppose the generally accepted norms. My daughter loaned me this book which she is reading as part of her Ph.D. program in pre- and postnatal psychology. It certainly fits right in with her assertion that we need to pay much more attention to what is happening in the first year of life (and before), not only because the child's personality is being formed, but because his brain is as well (and perhaps this is the same thing). The stories in this book are heart wrenching, but Perry does show that there are ways to help or at the very least, understand.
Refreshing new ideas .......2007-07-24
As a counseling student focusing on child therapy, I was very glad I stumbled across this book in the local library. Perry explores the role of brain structure in childhood disorders. While he focuses primarily on trauma (such as how PTSD in children mimics ODD and ADHD), I believe that other applications can be made. This is novel to hear in a world of tired exclusive arguments pro or con genetics, brain chemistry, and environment. Perry combines a few of these ideas to give the mental health worker a more comprehensive look at mental illness and trauma. The case stories are heartbreaking and compelling. A worthwhile read if you are going into the mental health (or even teaching) field, and interesting even if you are not.
I feel blessed to have found this book. .......2007-07-11
My husband and I are about to adopt our first child. We are adopting through DHS. All children who are adopted through DHS have been through trauma. We have been taking classes when our teacher recommended this book. I went out and bought it and read it and it was so insightful to what we may be dealing with. I feel so blessed to have this information about the brain and how children may act out in times they feel out of control. I truly believe that EVERY foster/adoptive parent should read this book. It was amazing and I will probably read it again. I can't stop talking about it. I am just blown away and very thankful for this book.
Everyone should read this book!.......2007-07-05
I couldn't put this book down. I learned so much that I can apply to myself as well as my kids. I have two adopted children who came from severe early childhood neglect and abuse, so this book is invaluable to me. The only problem is that it has left me thirsty for more from Dr. Perry!
Truly remarkable.......2007-06-27
The stories in this book are heart-wrenching, but to people who've dealt with traumatized children the scenarios and the aftermath are familiar. What is truly remarkable about Dr. Perry's work is that he uses each case he describes as an opportunity to explain how the developing brain is affected by trauma and how healing can be informed by this knowledge. Unlike many other books in this genre, this is no "great therapist cures poor abused children" book. Dr. Perry is modest about his own contributions, and rightly emphasizes the role that parents, extended family, and community must play in helping to heal traumatized kids as well is preventing trauma from occurring in the first place.
As the parent of a child with PTSD, I've read extensively on the subject. I'd really have liked it if Dr. Perry could have included a recipe for cure in the book, but of course that's just my wishful thinking, not a realistic hope. What he does give for parents who are looking for help is guidelines and guidance for finding the right kind of help, not just from therapy but from the larger world. What I learned from this book will definitely contribute to my ongoing work to help my daughter find her way out of the nightmare that her past put her in.

Drawing from their own histories, as well as from others, the authors illustrate what grief is and how it is possible to recover and regain energy and spontaneity. Based on a proven program, now extensively revised, The Grief Recovery Handbook offers grievers the specific actions needed to complete the grieving process and accept loss. For those ready to regain a sense of aliveness, the principles outlined here make this a life-changing handbook.
Customer Reviews:
An Amazing Book.......2007-09-19
I cannot begin to express what a help this book and its program have been. I was mired in grief over losses going back into childhood, and absolutely devastated by a recent one which prompted me to order the book in the first place. This isn't something you just read. To affect a genuine recovery from grief you have to be willing to DO what the authors guide you to do, but it's absolutely worth the effort. Following through with the program doesn't cost a thing and can be done in the comfort of your own easychair. All you need is a pen or pencil and a few sheets of paper (a legal pad would be helpful but isn't necessary). I heartily recommend this to anyone who has suffered a loss, recently or in the past. It's a lifelong program that will help a person recover from loss, not just wait for time to heal (it doesn't!) or go around the loss by sticking it on an emotional shelf and forgetting it. An absolute must for anyone who really wants to RECOVER from a loss!

A lifetime tool..........2007-09-14
I was so impressed with this program that I got certified to facilitate it. It is a tool that can be used again and again as we hurdle the situations in life that might stop us in our tracks. If you are stuck in your grief, or are having trouble moving through a loss in your life, whether it be divorce or any other stress inducing change I highly recommend this book as well as the Grief Recovery Outreach Programs.
Based on an earlier edition.......2007-08-16
I read the earlier edition of this book, which deals with death only, and not other losses. I found it fascinating enough that I may try working through the steps outlined with a partner. Yet, I agree with some of the reviewers who feel that all these steps and the graphing of the highs and lows in a relationship may not be what is needed. I lost my husband of 30 years following a 2 1/2 year struggle with cancer, and I don't think regrets are a part of my grief. I miss him, and always will, even though I will eventually move on with my life. I'm not sure there is any such thing as recovery from the loss of one's life partner. There have been other deaths in my life: of parents, a stepchild, friends and lovers, but losing the person with whom I've shared every day (except for a few absences) is something I've never before experienced. I do agree with the premise of the book that our society just doesn't accept loss and grief, and doesn't know how to deal with it, other than to ignore it, or encourage people to get over it, or replace whatever or whomever has been lost. The book did strike me as highly prescriptive, and I can understand that this may bother some. I have done graphing of highs and lows in life in other contexts, however, and found it quite illuminating. So, I am willing to give this a try.
A Great Book for Moving Beyond Grief.......2007-08-01
This book is a great book for those who are grieving any type of loss. I recently lost my husband, and this book offered me insights into the grieving process and how to move beyond it.
Very good and popular resource... (review by personal coach).......2007-06-15
This book is an excellent resource for those who are grieving any kind of loss. It provides an action plan that is gentle and provides direction during a difficult, confusing and often disorienting time. I have used this resource with my clients and I know many other therapists who regard it highly and use it in their practices. If you get this, I would also recommend the classic On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss. After a big loss of any kind, I think it is very important to take action, but also make sense of the loss. Both resources I mention in this review will help with making meaning out of the loss and getting reoriented.

Everyone Should Read.......2007-10-04
I am so sorry that I did not read this book 5 years ago. It explained why my mom behaves the way that she does. I think that everyone needs to read this because there is not a person alive that does not or will not love someone who has dementia or Alzheimers. It gives medical information that is easy to understand as well as ways to best deal with their loved one. It reassures the caregiver that they need to take care of themselves and it helps them to realize that thier loved one still loves them but is sometimes unable to show it in acceptable ways.
An absolute must for caregivers.......2007-07-27
For those of us who are caregivers, this book is a lifesaver. Before reading this book I was certain that many of the behaviors that my family member exhibits were unique to her. While I often read about Alzheimer's, I never read anything that made me stop and realize that, first, I am not alone, and second, that there are ways that I can handle situations better. This book is full of great suggestions on how to deal with the many behavioral issues that are exhibited by those with Alzheimer's and dementia.
Whenever I have an especially difficult day, I go online to the Alzheimer's page and remind myself how difficult it is for my family member. This book drove home that message, yet more importantly provided me with some tools on how to deal with these issues. I cannot stress enough how much I thought our situation and the behaviors were unique; it is liberating to realize that they are not. As well, understanding why the person exhibits such behaviors makes it much easier to respond correctly.
I wish I could thank the authors personally for this book. I hope they both know that their wisdom, concern and awareness of the Alzheimer patient has made a difference for me, and I am certain has made a difference for many others.
Caregivers -- buy this book, you will find some stress greatly diminished.
The 36 Hour Day.......2007-07-16
The 36-Hour Day is an excellent book for anyone dealing with Alzheimer's patients. It is hard for me to imagine anyone with the disease reading the book, but family members will benefit tremendously.
The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People with Alzheimer Disease, Other Dementias, and Memory Loss in Later Life.......2007-07-01
Well-written, easy to read, and comprehansive..excellent resource! I have already recommended it to others facing a future as a caregiver.
A MUST read for anyone that has an alzheimer family member, or anyone involved in the care of an alzheimer patient!!!!!!.......2007-06-11
I can not stress enough just how helpful and informative this book is. My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease 6 years ago. In those 6 years we have seen numerous doctors, taken numerous tests, spoke to many Social Workers, Home Health Aides, etc. NO ONE gave me the advice, information, suggestions, help, etc., anywhere near as well and thorough as "The 36 Hour Day".
I think so highly of this book and recommend it so much; that just last week, I had a meeting with the Director of Nursing, Head Nurse, and Social Worker at the nursing home where my Dad resides. I highly recommended this book and told the Dir. Of Nursing, it should be mandatory reading for anyone working in the facility.
If you have a loved one or are a care taker of someone with Alzheimer Disease---RUN do not walk, to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of this book.

Book Description
Dictee is the best-known work of the versatile and important artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (1951-1982). A classic work of autobiography that transcends the self, Dictee is the story of several women: the Korean revolutionary Yu Guan Soon, Joan of Arc, Demeter and Persephone, Cha's mother Hyung Soon Huo (a Korean born in Manchuria to first-generation Korean exiles), and Cha herself. The element that unites these women is suffering and the transcendence of suffering. The book is divided into nine parts structured around the Greek Muses. Cha deploys a variety of texts, documents, images, and forms of address and inquiry to explore issues of dislocation and the fragmentation of memory. The result is a work of power, complexity, and enduring beauty.

Contemporary Art in Book Form.......2007-07-27
I read this book for my Asian American lit class and found it excruciating painful to read. It's certainly inventive, but that's the only positive thing I can say about it. It's difficult to read, there are no characters to love. The French side by side is misleading since the translations are not exact. I would not call this a book, but rather a piece of contemporary art: It has a great concept but isn't actually very nice to read.
an amazing work.......2007-02-13
Dictee is a seminal work that has strongly influenced those poets lucky enough to have read it in the decades since it first appeared. It has had an underground reputation for decades, and now is beginning to be known to the mainstream. Yes, Dictee is rooted in the specifics of her family's immigrant experience, in the specifics of Korea and of America, in the specifics of gender, but it explodes across time, space and cultures, it transcends form, and ultimately it transforms the reader's consciousness of what can be done with writing and how you can perceive your life. I am tempted to say "if Cha had lived longer she would have been one of our major writers" but in fact she *is* one of the major writers of the second half of the 20th century, on the strength of this one work alone. I am delighted that Dictee is soon to appear in an addition with more of Cha's work.
Intriguing, but inaccessible.......2006-05-30
This book is certainly written in a surprising format, and some of the passages are interesting. However, in attempting to follow Cha's thought from one part to the next, the thought itself disappears, leaving only a form.
This book is clearly written for a very narrow range of readers: recent female Korean emigres to America who also know French, as well as extremely knowledgeable scholars. Those who do identify in some way with Cha's biography do find a way into the text. The two articles I read as part of a study of this book were written by Korean American women, who did find something meaningful in Dictee.
I, however, was lost and confused most of the time by the often minimalist use of words, their repeating, and the sudden jumps in theme and style.
Buy this book only if you fit into the above mentioned category, or if you have much time and desire to struggle through a confusing work for a questionable reward.
Reflection of woman.......2005-03-18
This book is confusing, frustrating, consuming and utterly breathtaking. It is a shattered mirror w/ pieces of riddles, poetry, cold photos of mothers and unsung heroines & nonsense; a true reflection of a woman. And like a woman, it takes work to truly understand its essence. Discovering what is hidden within Cha's deliberate chaos is like discovering the most sacred thoughts a woman possess. What makes this book unique is not so much the unconventional style but its dominating force to be absolutely nonconforming, such as the wildness that goes on in a woman's mind. It's not meant to be dissected and place into some kind of scientific formula of understanding. It's meant to be subjective, delicate and complex. Digest its intricacy and savor each page with delight. -Scribbling Ibis, 3/17/05
Great book..........2004-11-06
This has to be one of the most unusual books I have read. The layout of the whole book is a peice of art by itself. I bought it using a coupon from UnderTag.com, so it was almost free for me.
Customer Reviews:
Great for non-dancers as well!.......2007-07-16
This book helped be understand WHAT kind of exercise I needed to do in order to lose body FAT. I'm not in the "overweight" category, so books that tell you to "just take a walk" or "take the stairs instead of the elevator" aren't the most useful (I already do those things).
I'm not a dancer but I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to go down ONE size, and doesn't need to go down 3 or 4.
Mmmh!.......2006-03-20
It is a little confuse for young adults, specially if they are not familiar with measurement :-(
Diet for Dancers.......2005-12-24
Awesome book for any type of Dancer!
Good information for everyone, not just dancers........2005-12-12
This book was an unexpected present from someone who saw I was putting on a belly :o)
It's a good read, even for non dancers like me. A lot of statistical information is provided about dancers, mainly to give a picture of what their common eating mistakes are. While this wasn't very useful to me, I could just skip it and still understand the rest of the book.
It covers three areas:
1. an introduction to nutrition
2. the biology of weight
3. the transfer diet, a diet developped for diabetics
The first two parts are very interesting and a worthwhile read for anyone. The knowledge you gain about nutrition will be useful no matter who you are. The third is sound advice, it is a diet where you can set your target amount of daily calories, while ensuring that you eat from every important nutrient group and therefor stay healthy. HOWEVER, if all you are looking for is information about the transfer diet, you can find free info on the net (try the american diabetics association, for instance).
Sound Advice.... Really!!.......2004-04-12
I bought this book wondering what I would find. Too many of the reviews here would like to make this book out to be a guide to starving oneself thin. The book is very complex, offering the physiology of how food breaks down in the body, how starvation and very low calorie consumption adversely effects the body, and how to calculate proper caloric intake based on weight and activity level. The recommened diet is the Exchange Program, that would be the American Diabetic Assoc. diet. The very same one physicians instruct persons with type 2 diabetes to use. This diet ensures that you eat a variety of foods (starches, meat, veggies, fruits, milk/dairy, and fat) and do not have to directly count calories. This is not a quick weight-loss plan, in fact the book testifies to the fact that this is a slow proccess. I couldn't find anything in this book that recommended unhealthy practices to lose weight.
Bottom Line:This diet WILL work and is not encouraging dangerous behavior in dancers or everyday folks!

Not a diet plan at all.......2007-09-29
This is not a diet plan. This is some rather helpful information that may lead to healthy lifestyle adjustments. The recipes are delicious. I found one error in the book as far as a page number but that is all. I am a cheese lover, but so far I have adapted more of an Asian approach to eating and I must say that I really don't miss dairy as much as I thought I would.
I hope that Ric And Trudi take it to the next level and provide some nutritional information on the various accompaniments that can be consumed with foods. I'm sure that there is some benefits to the various pickles, relishes, and non-alcoholic beverages I have enjoyed since my youth other than the taste they provide. There has not been much written on the subject but I'm sure a better understanding will add more dimension and enjoyment to eating food.
Brilliant and Unique Cookbook.......2007-09-09
Not only a cookbook with great, fairly simple recipes but it also offers a unique 14 day menu/lifestyle plan a la mediterraean. I especially love the suggestions for menu/activity/lifestyle based on certain occasions such as a romantic evening, hectic weekend, airplane travel and several others. Great suggestions for living a more balanced, relaxed life and eating healthier as well. Highly recommended for those looking for something beyond the standard cookbook. Beautiful color pics as well of many of the recipes featured.
A Way of Living that's Better and Easier than a Diet or Exercise Plan.......2007-07-29
It just makes sense. The most delicious food is the most healthful. A few years ago it dawned on me that all my favorite cuisines were either from the Mediterranean or Asian regions. I daydreamed about a "MediterrAsian" restaurant, thinking what a catchy name I had cleverly invented. Surely no one else would ever join such different styles of food together. Or would they? I plunked "mediterrasian" into a search engine and was transported to a place even better than my imaginary restaurant.
Ric and Trudy's website was like an oasis to me. All my life I had never had to worry about my weight, but that changed when I became pregnant at age 29. By the time I found their website, number two was on the way and my metabolism wasn't keeping up. Dieting was completely foreign to me, and being a foodie who loved cooking, I dreaded the idea of having to give up fats like cheese, olives and avocados, or carbs like pasta, potatoes, and fresh fruits. All the popular diet programs either consisted of calorie counting (i.e. small portions of reduced fat or non-fat foods) or of eliminating carbs and eating lots of protein. My dream diet was more along the lines of French Women Don't Get Fat meets Yan Can Cook, but I didn't know how to translate that to every day life, or if it would even be healthy. Joining a gym sounded about as appealing as going to the dentist. Formal exercise and sports were not this bookworm's cup of tea.
So when the Mediterrasian Way presented that third, balanced option, it simply felt right...and had the scientific basis to back it up--not just from recent times, but going back centuries. As I explored the extensive website, it was like coming home--from a nutritional and culinary perspective, it all resonated with my knowledge and experience, gleaned from both my own education and being raised by a health-conscious ethnically diverse cooking-oriented family. Not only did the theory make sense, but the authors had translated it into practical menus and recipes for every day living.
The emphasis on natural movement was something I had always intuited, so it was refreshing to see that validated by the longevity reported in studies of Mediterranean and Asian cultures based on an active (and simultaneously restful) lifestyle combined with healthful cooking. Granted, I couldn't achieve that level of movement with my nose in a book or up against a computer screen all day, but as a mother of little ones and a homemaker in a house with stairs, my once somewhat sedentary existence has been exchanged for a life made up of fairly rigorous hands-on tasks.
I was tempted to print out the whole website, but instead I emailed the authors, thanking them for creating such an amazing resource and suggesting they turn it into a book. Well, I wasn't the only one, so it came as no surprise when about a year later, Ric informed me they were doing just that. I was quite willing to pay to hold a printed and bound version of their website in my hands, but the book is actually much more than that. It's a chronological journey and explanation of The MediterrAsian Way, as well as a treasury of creative meal planning ideas and recipes with pages of mouthwatering full color photographs.
Like the way of life it outlines, the book is light enough to read in a day, but so rich in content that I keep returning to it to absorb the principles and implement the techniques. Because no foods are excluded, this style of cooking and eating lends itself to very versatile and flexible menus.
In a literary sense, it reads more like a guidebook than a textbook, perfect for the armchair traveler, but also meaningful to those of us who've been overseas and are delighted to revisit the flavors and lifestyle we tasted while abroad. Thanks to Ric and Trudy's excellent direction, I have found my MediterrAsian restaurant--right in my own kitchen.
MediterrAsian Diet Cookbook.......2007-05-15
This cookbook is great! I've only been on the diet for a few weeks, so hopefully it works! Gives all of the information for a great diet, and tons of recipes that are easy to follow. Mostly involves eating a lot of low fat whole grains, and pastas--and staying away from red meats. If you want to check out information on the diet before purchasing the book, just check out their website at mediterrasian.com.
More than just an extension of the website...it stands well on its own.......2007-04-06
As a fan of the Mediterrasian website and its recipes, I was eager to check out the accompanying book upon its release. While it's referred to on the website as an "extension of the website," it's definitely a book that can stand alone.
The book is wonderful for the recipes alone, but I also found the first half of the book, which provided some background information, reasoning and research behind the Mediterrasian lifestyle, to be interesting reading. It's presented in a non-stuffy, laid back and friendly way, and perfect for people who aren't necessarily looking for a "diet" or structured plan, but some simple ways to live well through food choices and lifestyle.
The Asian and Mediterranean inspired recipes are easy to follow in addition to being delicious. Also, it's a great cookbook for someone who doesn't eat a lot of red meat...it's chock full of seafood and poultry recipes.
Since purchasing this book, I've ordered additional copies for friends and family and will probably order more. Thanks, Ric and Trudy!

The best plan out there.......2007-09-11
Me and my 3 daughters have really suffered with systemic candida, as a result of intensive and long antibiotic therapy for treating Lyme Disease. My Candida was so bad it was in my lungs, as one doctor said well be grateful it is'nt in your brain!!! After combing websites for 8 weeks, Dr. Jeff's plan seemed to be the most thorough and comprehensive. I bought the book and the suypplements and followed the diet to the letter and did not stray once and the four of us have had complete success!!! We have been symptom and candida free since June. My youngest daughter, had some difficulty with returning yeast after the diet and I contacted Dr. Jeff and we backed her up on the plan and she stayed on for 3 more weeks and is doing well.
[...]. If you e-mail you through that forum he will respond with in 24 hours. I emailed throughout the entire diet and he always got right back to me.
God Bless
Lifeforce; A Dynamic Plan for Health, Vitality and Weight Loss.......2007-07-12
I really enjoyed reading this book. It covered a broad spectrum of your health. I agreed with everything I read. Topics I read in other books matched. I like the way the book starts and gets right to the point.
A concise understanding of Candida.......2007-07-10
This book gives a concise understanding of the scope of candida. It is written in language that is easy to understand. I found help for my long term problems of asthma and allergies and fatigue. I have read quite alot about sugar and antibiotic use and its consequences; I really liked the format of the information for quick review of major details of candida and the reccomended program.

I am interested in staying healthy and enjoy reading books and such that may be helpful.
I bought this book because Kevin Trudeau recommended it.
LIFEFORCE: A Place to Begin.......2007-03-17
The reader who can best benefit from LIFEFORCE by Jeffrey McCombs is one who has been sick or at least considerably far removed from vibrant health for many years and has no idea of the link between good health and detoxification. McCombs' thesis is that nearly everyone suffers from varying degrees of toxicity brought on by eating chemically altered food which in turn cause the growth of Candida fungus. Further he argues that the indiscriminate use of antibiotics exacerbates the worsening cycle of the body's ability to eliminate toxins. I have no major issues with any of these areas but the slimness of his book (about 100 pages) does not permit him enough space to delve into areas that need further light. I would have appreciated, for example, more explanation on why he deems beef a needed nutrient for numerous antioxidants when nearly all nutritionists suggest that beef simply contains too much animal fat, which for McCombs is a virtue and not a vice. Further, even with his focus on the plusses of beef, he scants a much needed warning that not all beef is created equal. He might have added that organic beef coming from free reign cows should be the first choice of beef shoppers. Still, I do not intend to be too picky. In his relentless urging of his readers to detoxify, I can only applaud such single-minded devotion. After reading McCombs, one might wish to look elsewhere for a more complete consideration of the need to detoxify. I recommend THE NEW DETOX DIET by Elson Haas and the 7-DAY DETOX MIRACLE for a conventional approach. And for an unconventional (and controversial) approach, I suggest NATURAL CURES 'THEY' DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT by Kevin Trudeau.

Unintended benefits.......2004-07-01
I discovered this book after reading "A Guide to Forensic Testimony" (ISBN 0201752794), which is aimed at IT professionals. I had little interest in being an expert witness, but have been a witness in litigation and wanted to better understand the process. In my quest for another book I came across this one, and benefited from two levels - (1) I learned even more about rules of evidence, and expert testimony, and (2) discovered a methodology for computing values associated with business interruptions that have some potential to meet requirements of Rules 104(a) and (e), and 703 [Federal Rules of Evidence].
First, the material related to evidence and expert testimony - this book covers qualifications, expert roles and advice to the expert, and expert reports and admissibility of evidence with respect to economic, accounting and damages experts. More importantly, the author provides excellent advice on using experts from multiple disciplines, which is prudent given the complexity of measuring business interruption losses. The material about this aspect of the book is not only consistent with the book I cited above in general terms, but also went much deeper, and completely addressed the issues and factors associated with the subject from a legal point of view.
The second aspect of this book, the methodologies for analyzing loss attacks the problem from multiple angles, which can be aggregated or tailored to the legal theory of a particular case. The angles include an economic framework for the lost profits estimation process, and how to conduct a business interruption loss analysis. The book goes into more depth with a comprehensive description for conducting an industry analysis, especially with respect to relating overall industry growth to the plaintiff's growth, and in-depth chapters on projecting lost revenues and cost analysis and profitability. The methodologies alone or in total are complete, and should meet and Rule 104(a), (e), or Rule 703 test (i.e., "Daubert" issues).
Unintended benefits from this book came in the methodologies. I am an IT consultant who specializes in service management, which encompasses business continuity and system availability, among other things. The methodologies, I discovered, can be as easily applied to a proactive approach to determining cost of system unavailability of company-critical systems as they can be in determining after-the-fact losses. This allows realistic impact analyses that show costs, trade-offs and affects on the loss of critical systems. Not so coincidently, this same data can be used in court to show prior due diligence if loses do occur based on third-party breaches of contracts or warranty issues. More importantly, even though this book was written before the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the methodologies given in this book can be used to validate compliance with certain sections of the act, most notably 404 (also, to a degree, 302, 409 and 906).
Overall, this book is one of the best professional investments I've made - and the reasons for it are purely serendipitous.
Book Description
This sensitive and biblically oriented book offers a roadmap for bereaved spouses on the journey through grief to resolution. Excellent for pastors, too.

Sensitive and Scriptural "Sufferology".......2007-08-19
The husband and wife co-authoring team of "Getting to the Other Side of Grief" provide a sensitive and scriptural study of suffering.
Reading other reviews, I am half surprised and half unsurprised by the strident rejection of the Scriptural viewpoint.
I'm unsurprised given the depth of emotional turmoil that readers must have been experiencing as they tried to reconcile their non-faith perspective with this faith-perspective on death, in the midst of the death of a loved one.
I'm surprised, given the fact that as a pastor and counselor I have shared grieving periods with many who do not describe themselves as "believers" and yet they have appreciated a sensitive, scriptural approach.
There's certainly no reason for the authors to apologize for writing a book about death and dying from a Christian perspective that shows scripturally that death is "not the way it's supposed to be" and that one day God will set all things right through Christ's resurrection power.
Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Spiritual Friends, Soul Physicians, and Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction.
If you are a DEVOUT Christian then this is for you...If not..........2006-12-27
...then you need to look elsewhere. I ordered this book for my mother and eventually returned it. It piles on the religion thick and heavy. If you are a devout (read: VERY RELIGIOUS) person, this is the book for you. If you are simply spiritual or just not terribly religious, this book borders on being offensive. There are a lot of other terrifically helpful books available for newly widowed spouses that don't push the religion aspect as heavily as this one does.
Beware - Punishing Theological Views.......2006-07-18
My husband had only been gone for a handful of days when I ordered this book. I read all the reviews here and thought that the "religious" aspect would somehow be acceptable, perhaps very helpful. I was stopped dead in my tracks when I read the following:
"At its very nature death is demonic, and you cannot explain the demonic. Death happens. It is not really God's fault, nor yours, nor that of your spouse. Death is the devil's calling card."
Are you kidding me? I lost my husband! He died! In the context of searching for spiritual understanding, the idea that the devil is responsible for my beloved husband's death is absurd. Even if the practical, therapy half of this book might be helpful...it is made null and void in my mind by allowing such utterly nonsensical and antiquated thinking to prevail.
I quote further:
"Lazarus will come storming from the tomb. Death can't hold him back with the power of Christ on his side. Jesus is weeping because sin has broken this world, and death is a symbol of that brokenness. Even though he has the power to fix it, Jesus grieves."
Am I to believe that my husband's death is punishment for "original sin"? The message here is that we, "man", are the cause of the curse of death, through sin we have brought death upon ourselves and only at the second coming of the Messiah will we be "resurrected".
If these ideas bring comfort to those who grieve the loss of a spouse, then this is a good book to read. I write this only as a warning to those who might have different "religious", spiritual or "Christian" beliefs, or those who may be seeking spiritual guidance. The opinions set down in this book can be very discomforting and offensive.
Religious and psychological view points make for somewhat disjunctive information.......2006-05-21
Although this book is well written, be aware that the religious component is at least 50% . I didn't realize the Christian view on death would be so prevalent, and I should have paid more attention to the authors, one being a pastor...But, I wish it had been made more apparent to me before I purchased the book that the theme would encompass both religion and psychology working to explain the grieving process. But the psychological information is very helpful. And if you're a Christian, the religious component is comforting.
Comforting for greiving spouses.......2006-03-20
This is a very good book for grieving spouses. It addresses many aspects of the spousal grief process and offers encouragement. Perspectives are provided from the widow and the widower; which happen to be a clinical psychologist and a pastor respectively.

It would be a pity if this interesting, humane, and practical book were read only by parents of recently bereaved children--for two reasons. First, the book is about grief in a broad sense. Its lessons apply not only to the child whose pet, aunt, or parent has died, but also to the child whose parents have divorced, who has suffered a debilitating injury, or who has experienced other forms of traumatic loss. Second, let's face it: every child will suffer a loss at some point, so it behooves parents to be prepared in advance. As the authors say, "our task as parents is to prepare our children to deal with the experiences they will have."
It's unfortunate that the book has what might be considered a common structural flaw in self-help books. All of Part I (about 50 pages) is devoted to examining various myths about grieving and mistakes in dealing with it--for example, that the griever should keep busy and try not to feel bad. This is "good advice about bad advice," but it leaves the reader wondering why the authors didn't choose to get on with the plain old "good advice" on page 1. By Part II, it's already clear which coping techniques the authors will recommend. It would have been better to start there. --Richard Farr
Book Description
To watch a child grieve and not know what to do is a profoundly difficult experience for parents, teachers, and caregivers. Yet, there are guidelines for helping children develop a lifelong, healthy response to loss.
In When Children Grieve, the authors offer a cutting-edge volume to free children from the false idea of "not feeling bad" and to empower them with positive, effective methods of dealing with loss.
There are many life experiences that can produce feelings of grief in a child, from the death of a relative or a divorce in the family to more everyday experiences such as moving to a new neighborhood or losing a prized possession. No matter the reason or degree of severity, if a child you love is grieving, the guidelines examined in this thoughtful book can make a difference.
Customer Reviews:
excellent book.......2007-08-01
The book is readable, practical and filled with useful information. It would be helpful to both parents and professionals.
Everyone needs this book!.......2007-05-28
"When Children Grieve" is a book every person should read. It explains just how significantly we are impacted by almost evey loss we experience.
Each and every one of us will experience loss in our lives. Most of us don't realize the impact those losses have on our future lives and the decisions we make when we have not gone through the grieving process. We need to ackowledge the changes that a loss brings to our lives.
This book thoughfully explains what grieving is and how to recognize it in your life.
I highly recommend it for everyone as a teaching resource for lifes lessons.
A must read for any one going through a loss of any kind.......2007-04-03
This is a great book for anyone who has been through a move, divorce, pet loss, or loss of a loved one. It gives great solutions for resolve. Even if it has been years since your loss. Even though the title implies it is to help your children you can learn alot about yourself as well.
A Must Read for All Parents.......2004-01-14
This book should be required for all parents. If you want to understand the basics of human and/or child behavior, this book is a must read. The book succinctly and lovingly explains the concept of "loss" and the emotional and physical responses to it-what we would normally call grief.
The beauty of this book is that grief is placed in a larger context. In other words, according to the authors, grief is the response when experiencing a "massive change or end from everything familiar." Therefore, children, and adults, can grieve a variety of situations: loss of a pet, moving to another neighborhood, or changing schools.
Therein rests the beauty of this book. This book explains how to help children. More importantly, the adults who are required to provide the assistance will learn more about their children and themselves.
So highly recommended, there are not enough stars to express this book's importance.
Written With Gentle, Healing Hands.......2003-05-24
I am a conservative, grumpy, old, Lutheran pastor, vehemently opposed to all things "New Age." I despise the fads of pop-psychology. "Touchy-Feely" advice from so-called experts, who demand exorbitant fees, often makes me want to wretch. So, I approached this book filled with trepidation.
There was no need for my concerned.
Writing with extraordinary gentleness and common sense Mr. James, Mr. Friedman and Dr. Matthews have provided adults with an invaluable outline on how to shepherd the children in their lives through loss, grief and recovery. Every parent, grandparent, teacher, pastor, priest, rabbi, nurse or physician who expects the children in their lives to suffer the death of a pet, suffer the death of a relative, move or endure a divorce will benefit from reading this book.
Do yourself a favor. Read this book for the sake of the children whom you love. It is well worth the investment of your time.
Then, do yourself a second favor, and place a copy of this book in your church, synagogue or public library for the others who will grow by reading it.
