2 out of 5 stars Ultimate? Naww.......2007-08-10

I'm a huge Bond fan. After reading this book, I found nothing that I was looking for. All that is in the book is charts and rankings. There is not even a fact page...like...Best selling book film or what not.
I think they should take off the "Ultimate" in "Ultimate James Bond Fan Book" and just put "Just another James Bond Fan Book."

4 out of 5 stars A different take on familiar material.......2007-02-26

Unlike other books about the Bond films, this one does not just review what the movies are about, but compares, contrasts, and critiques them over the last 40+ years. Perhaps a better title would have been "The Ultimate James Bond MOVIE Fan Book." There is minimal discussion of the literary 007 here. I enjoyed the ranking system, although some of the time I don't agree with the author's opinions, which Lipp admits may occur straightaway. Nonetheless, it's entertaining reading taking the movies from a different perspective. My only significant complaint is the complete lack of photographs, but these can be found elsewhere. For example, if you can't remember Stromberg (Curt Jergens) from The Spy Who Loved Me, you aren't going to see a picture of him in this tome. With the recent release of the Ultimate Editions on DVD, this is a timely and handy companion.

3 out of 5 stars For what it is supposed to be it is very good........2006-12-10

The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book is interesting, though not "ultimate" for people who have been reading books about Bond for years. I have a collection of books on both the James Bond films and the novels and this has perhaps prejudiced my view. If you love a repeat of plots, an analysis and critique of all the Bond characters in film and enjoy statistics this may be the book for you. There is certainly an ample supply of lists and enough ratings to fill a graduate textbook on statistics. Having experienced the latter I feel I can say that.

Where the book suffers, and author Deborah Lipp is very upfront on this, is the personal opinions. She is very honest about this and actually has two ratings for every aspect of each film. Ms. Lipp relies heavily upon fan websites and suveys that either she or others have made. Then she expresses her own feelings, sometimes in agreement and sometimes the opposite. She is very candid that Bond fans, like Trekkies and Sherlockians (I am in all three categories) will disagree on a number of points. My biggest problem is that once she gets into a film she goes off into lists and ratings of which there are many. I would have preferred the listings to have been at the latter part of the book. At times there is no apparent reason why a list will pop up at the end of a particular film being described.

I will also confess that I did not take the author's suggestion to refer to certain sections as I felt moved rather than reading it straight from cover to cover. By the end I felt very bogged down and wished that I had only read it in parts, with an interlude between. There are many excellent books of analysis out there on the Bond films, encyclopedias in some cases, many with great pictures from the films. I would suggest the reader of this review check out the listing on Amazon. If you enjoy this book you will likely find others that you will like even better. I have had to do this for years as I have used the Bond films in the classroom and written articles about some of them.

I don't regret that I bought this. I have had the good fortune as a teacher to have met a number of the main stars Ms. Lipp has named, three of which have become close personal friends of my wife and myself and who I will be asking to autograph this book as they have others in my collection.

I do appreciate the very strong feelings the author has about various Bond films, we all do. I did not rate this book on whether I agreed with the author on every film, but on its usefulness to a long time fan.

5 out of 5 stars The title is not just hype: this really IS the ultimate.......2006-11-10

The title is not just hype. This really is the ultimate book on James Bond movies; I can't imagine anything more authoritative or more entertaining. Whether you use it as a reference book, browse through it, or read it from cover to cover (as I did), it will reward you with a wealth of facts and informed opinion. This book is a great addition to anyone's movie bookshelf, and it's an absolute gotta-have for fans of James Bond - casual fans and super fans alike.

Deborah Lipp's strategy in organizing her material works extremely well. Each Bond movie gets its own chapter, which is divided into sections devoted to synopsis, analysis, and evaluation of the movie's strength and weaknesses, as well as a ranking of where the movie stands in the Bond canon. Interspersed with these discussions, you get irresistible nuggets of information: quotes, polls, rankings, milestones, facts & figures, high points & low points, cars & gadgets, goofs, awards, and more. I especially enjoyed the many Bond lists that Lipp compiled for the book, such as "Best Explosions in Bond Films," "Best Stunts," "Best Car Chases," and "Best Villains." Another highlight is an extensive survey of the actors who have portrayed Bond on screen, comparing the strengths and weaknesses of their performances.

Lipp's love of movies shines through every page. Her writing style is witty and literate, and her knowledge of 007 lore will blow you away. "The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book" is sure to become the standard work on 007 movies. Every Bond fan and every movie lover should put this book in their shopping carts.

5 out of 5 stars A Step Above Other Bond Movie Books.......2006-10-06

While there will be several James Bond books available around the time of the new Bond movie (Casino Royale) release, I recommend you get this one.

This book is very easy to read (even for people who only like photo books), and is extremely well-researched. The author very cleverly mixes in "Top Ten" and "Best/Worst" lists within each chapter describing a particular Bond movie in detail.

The author makes clear her prejudices and preferences for various films, characters, moments, etc., but balances this to a large degree with citings, quotations, and comments from fan pollings. A sore spot with other Bond books (avoided here) was the feeling their authors were trying to get in good with EON Productions (Owners/Producers of the Bond movie franchise) or other Bond movie P.R. people.

Of course, I don't agree with every opinion in this book (come on, "on Her Majesty's Secret Service" ranked in the LOWER third of Bond movies?); when presented in an entertaining manner (like in this book), these opinions are great for movie buff/Bond fan dispute, discussion, and debate --- what a good read is supposed to accomplish.

Walter Wick's fun photos and Jean Marzollo's tricky riddles have returned in this I Spy "best of," a compilation of some of the duo's most entertaining "Where's Waldo?"-style visual scavenger hunts.

Kids and grownups should be amply entertained digging up hidden treasure from a dozen different two-page tableaus, like "Baking Cookies": "I spy a boot, five arrows, blue hair,/A deer, four flames, a little green bear;/Five white beards, two three-string guitars,/Six raisin eyes, and three treetop stars." Wick's detail-rich photographs span from the realistic--like The Rainbow Express (an excitingly in-progress train diorama) and Arts & Crafts (a craft table crowded with thumbtacks, pipe cleaners, and the like)--to the more surreal, like Inventor's Workshop, a confabulation of live electrodes and steaming test tubes.

Ultimate Challenger makes a fine introduction to the 20-plus-volume I Spy series (Treasure Hunt, School Days, and Marzollo gladly adds value here with two pages of brand-new additional riddles. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate I Spy.......2007-03-31

My son loves the entire I Spy series so it came as no real surprise that he was excited to get this book. I like the idea that the puzzles are challenging even to an adult and cannot be solved in mere seconds. They take a certain amount of concentration of the part of the child but not so much that puzzle becomes so difficult that they want to quit.

5 out of 5 stars I Spy Ultimate Challenger.......2007-01-10

The book is both challenging and interesting to all ages. I also like the size of the book and that it's a hard cover.

5 out of 5 stars Best I Spy book yet!.......2005-12-18

I like this I Spy book best of all. Not only does it have some of the best scenes from some of the previous I Spy books, but it also has some cool new riddles. Various scenes include "Rainbow Express" From I Spy Fantasy, "A is for..." From I Spy School Days, and "Baking Cookies" From I Spy Christmas. I read this whenever I feel like I need to pass the time because it is so much fun looking for things.

Overall, 5 Stars. If you can find this book, buy it. It is top-notch fun!

3 out of 5 stars More (and Less) of the Same.......2004-09-17

While there's nothing particularly wrong with this book, there's nothing groundbreaking, either. The pictures are taken from other books in the series, and while the riddles are new, they aren't any more difficult or involved than usual. Think of this as "ultimate" in the sense of "last in a series" (until the next one comes out), not "highest in degree or order, utmost or extreme" (definitions via WordNet).

In addition to this book, I also have the Spooky Night, Christmas, and Mystery I Spy books. Of the 12 pictures in this collection five come from those books (two each from Spooky Night and Christmas, one from Mystery). Also with only 12 pictures, "Ultimate Challenger" has one fewer picture than the Christmas and Mystery books. And because the pictures come from a variety of sources, there isn't even a "find the common element" usually present at the end of an I Spy book.

To be sure the pictures are creatively staged and the riddles occasionally make good use of word play (trunk: is that elephant, tree or luggage?), and there are the usual bonus riddles at the end of the book. Make sure you have a very good light source over your shoulder or head because the finish on the pages and lighting of some of the pictures can make the objects even harder to find.

If you're new to I Spy or don't have any of the books recycled here (check the Amazon Search Table of Contents for a list of the pictures, the Back Cover has, I believe, a list of the books involved), the "Ultimate Challenger" isn't bad - and it's more disappointing than terrible if you do have some of the books already. Just don't expect anything too incredible (either in terms of quality or quantity), or you'll be let down.

4 out of 5 stars Great Images and descriptions but does need to be re-proofed.......2006-04-26

This book is filled with excellent photos with great descriptions. The best historical book on spy hardware that I have ever seen. It does need to be re-proof read though... I noticed at least 3 spots where the text just ends in mid sentence which seemed really odd for a book of this caliber. It's just a minor irritation but otherwise it's a 5 star book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2006-01-07

4 out of 5 stars Great photographs, interesting reading.......2003-05-24

I was given this book as a gift and think the photographs in it are absolutely great! The text that accompanies all the photos is interesting, but I've noticed more than just a few spots in the book where the captions to the photos stops in mid-sentence. I still love the book and if those captions were complete; it would rate 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Reference Book -- Excellent Read.......2003-02-20

This book was given to me as a Christmas gift this past year. As a writer of Spy Fiction ("The Malagasy Tortoise"), this book has given me a wonderful and exacting insight to the many gizmos and gadgets being used in the field of spying. From weapons to decoding devices "The Ultimate Spy" has it all. I recommend this book to anyone interested in anything clandestine or who is looking to expand their knowledge of the CIA, the FBI or the private sector of spying. This book is loaded with excellent photos of spy personalities, guns, secret hiding spots, good guys and bad guys -- everything is in here to make yourself a fantastic investigation. An exceptional book, one that I now keep right next to my computer.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating reading (and viewing of the many illustrations).......2002-11-18

This book--by a real expert in the field--has a unique combination of pictures, words, and topics. It is magnificently illustrated, making it easier to understand a complex subject. The text is accurate and informative, but not too wordy, and the reader can skip around to whichever topics interest him or her the most. The topics covered in this book range from the basics of espionage to the history of spying to examples of spy gear used over the last several decades to the latest in spy technology. This book will interest both those with little background in the world of spying and those who have already studied it a great deal. The collection of illustrations in this book is definitely the best available anywhere.

Book Description

The Literary Spy provides a unique view of the intelligence world through the words of its own major figures (and those fascinated with them) from ancient times to the present. CIA speechwriter and analyst Charles E. Lathrop has compiled and annotated more than 3,000 quotations from such disparate sources as the Bible, spy novels and movies, Shakespeare’s plays, declassified CIA documents, memoirs, TV talk shows, and speeches from U.S. and foreign leaders and officials.
Arranged in thematic categories with opening commentary for each section, the quotations speak for themselves. Together they serve both to illuminate a world famous for its secrets and deceptions and to show the extent to which intelligence has manifested itself in literature and in life. Engaging, informative, and often irreverent, The Literary Spy is an exceedingly satisfying book—one that meets the needs of the serious researcher just as ably as those of the armchair spy in pursuit of an evening’s entertainment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is one of two indispensable books for scholars.......2006-10-21

As both a teacher of intelligence and national security classes as well as a writer about intelligence, Lathrop's book is only the second indispensable book I have come across. The other is Polmar and Allen's Spy Book.

I have used The Literary Spy in the last four articles or chapters I have published. It not only provides some of the best insights of both scholars and practitioners on a variety of intelligence topics, but it also provides very helpful introductions to each of those topics.

I have even been tempted to use the book as a textbook for a class I teach on intelligence. By the time a student has read through all of the pithy comments on, for example, "Counterintelligence," he or she would have been exposed to the essence of some of the very best writing on that topic.

But the book is most helpful to researchers and writers on intelligence. It is like having one's own miniature Google-like search through the best of intelligence writing in one's own hand. And all of the quotations used are fully documented. I am hooked on it. This volume occupies all too valuable and minimal desk space next to my keyboard and will do so for a long time.

Finally, it is a book that can be read just for the fun of reading. It makes wonderful reading on cold Winter nights or hot Summer evenings. One does not have to be an expert on intelligence to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource!.......2005-03-06

This is a rare type of book--unique, fun, and useful all at the same time. To my knowledge, no other book brings together so many quotes and comments about the world of intelligence. These quotes, along with Mr. Lathrop's comments, provide a guide to how intelligence works--or doesn't work--and will help educate anyone interested in spying and intelligence.

This is more than just another reference book filled with quotes, however. You can open it to any page, start reading, and quickly become engrossed. Soon, I suspect, most readers will find themselves jumping from one subject to another, and writing down titles of books that Lathrop draws from. It's addictive.

Finally, this book is fun. Lathrop has a sly sense of humor, and his quotes often are ironic or just plain funny; he displays a dry wit in his own comments, as well.

Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in intelligence, history, or current events.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Reference .......2004-10-22

A majority of Americans do not understand intelligence, given its necessarily sensitive and exclusionary nature. Greater news coverage of the subject, generally in the context of national security issues, does not appear to have enlightened a public that prefers to view things through an increasingly partisan political lens.

For those who do not subscribe to simplistic reductions of the complex ideas surrounding the theory and practice of intelligence, Charles Lathrop has compiled and annotated a solution in the form of The Literary Spy. LitSpy is a collection of over 3,000 quotations, infused with the wit and wisdom of the author. The result is a masterful collection of powerful ideas and observations articulated in a very memorable way.

Examples? The reader is treated to quotes from sources as diverse as the Bible and Socrates to the late Washington Post scribe and perennial CIA critic Mary McGrory. Better still, Lathrop uses his insider access as a CIA officer to provide quotes that we otherwise would not have access to. One especially memorable offer was solicited to the Agency by a dentist offering his services "for the interrogation of anybody you choose" in the wake of the September 11th attacks. Lathrop assures us the individual was not hired, despite the patriotic sentiments expressed in the e-mail.

From a structural standpoint, LitSpy is remarkably user-friendly. Its sixty-five categories of quotations are arranged alphabetically and can be accessed by subject or source index. Lathrop also includes a select bibliography for the reader. While he modestly states that his book "does not pretend to be comprehensive," it is difficult not to marvel at the breadth and depth of effort that went into this magnificent compilation made better by the humorous asides and insightful comments of this former military officer, analyst, speechwriter, and intel boss-jock shop honcho.

This book is for insiders and outsiders, critics and defenders, and should be on the shelf of anyone with any interest in the true nature of intelligence. Lathrop is to be commended for this unique contribution to the field of intelligence literature.

5 out of 5 stars Superb resource for amateurs and professionals.......2004-10-09

I saw this book last night and snapped it up immediately. I have been an intelligence analyst for the government for a long time now, and I love using appropriate quotes to set off reports and presentations. Needless to say, "the Literary Spy" is jam-packed with them.

A few of the quotes aren't that striking, but a lot are. I particularly liked the sections about counterintelligence, deception, and traitors "in their own words."

I think this book is also a good one for the intelligence "buff" as well as people who just like pithy quotations. I imagine students writing papers about espionage would find it very useful as well.

In short, it's worth every penny, and I congratulate the author.

Book Description

Wes Britton's Spy Television (2004) was an overview of espionage on the small screen from 1951 to 2002. His Beyond Bond: Spies in Fiction and Film (2004) wove spy literature, movies, radio, comics, and other popular media together with what the public knew about actual espionage to show the interrelationships between genres and approaches in the past century. Onscreen and Undercover, the last book in Britton's "Spy Trilogy," provides a history of spies on the large screen, with an emphasis on the stories these films present. Since the days of the silent documentary short, spying has been a staple of the movie business. It has been the subject of thrillers, melodramas, political films, romances, and endless parodies as well. But despite the developing mistrust of the spy as a figure of hope and good works, the variable relationship between real spying and screen spying over the past 100 years sheds light on how we live, what we fear, who we admire, and what we want our culture--and our world--to become. Onscreen and Undercover describes now forgotten trends, traces surprising themes, and spotlights the major contributions of directors, actors, and other American and English artists. The focus is on movies, on and off camera. In a 1989 National Public Radio interview, famed author John Le Carre said a spy must be entertaining. Spies have to interest potential sources, and be able to draw people in to succeed in recruiting informants. In that spirit, Wes Britton now offers Onscreen and Undercover.

Historian H. Keith Melton is a specialist in 20th-century espionage; he's also quite a fan of espionage gadgetry. Both interests make strong showings in this heavily illustrated glimpse into the shadowy world of modern spying. Melton examines the role of clandestine intelligence in revolutionary Russia and Nazi Germany, analyzes modern spy rings, and profiles a number of important figures in the demimonde of spooks, among them British code breaker Alan Turing and Yugoslav double agent Dusan Popov. He also showcases some astonishing hardware, ranging from suitcase radios to shirt button microphones and mechanical pencil pistols. Former CIA director William Colby and former KGB general Oleg Kalugin, who recruited the American traitor John Walker, contribute forewords.

Book Description

The insider's guide to the secret world of espionage.

An inconspicuous figure in a raincoat... border crossings at midnight... living under constant threat of betrayal and torture. Are these images from the movies -- or reality? Secretive and shadowy, the world of the spy is one that only a privileged few have understood. Now The Ultimate Spy Book gives you a unique opportunity to enter that world. 4 out of 5 stars An interesting book........2006-05-27

This is really more a correction than a review. "Bagman" states in his review that the Nagant revolver shown in the book could not be silenced because of the cylinder gap typical of most revolvers, which would let noisy expanding gases escape. With any other revolver, this would hold true, but the Nagant revolver's unique feature is its gas-seal design. All revolvers, upon firing, leak gas from between the chamber mouth and the forcing cone. The Nagant, however, was gas-tight, because of a unique mechanical arrangement where the cylinder is cammed forward upon cocking -- tucking the coned breach end of the barrel into the mouth of the aligned chamber and enclosing the mouth of the cartridge casing. The expanding super-hot gases generated by the discharge of the round would cause the case mouth to expand against the inside of the forcing cone, forming a gas-tight seal, conserving the expanding gases propelling the bullet, improving muzzle velocity, and allowing use of a muzzle-mounted noise suppressor or "silencer."

1 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Spy Book.......2006-05-15

It is remarkable that the author has apparently accepted at "face value' representations of those from whom he has procured equipment that was represented as having been used by O.S.S., etc. For example, on page 13,and twice thereafter, he describes a ring used to conceal microdots. I do not know if he has ever handled microdots, but I have. They are tiny, hence the name, and are bleached so that they are utterly transparent to the naked eye,or even under 10x magnification. If they were to be concealed in such a cavernous device the chances of safe location and retrieval would be nil. Melton goes on to picture and describe a "silenced" Nagant revolver(page 27). Of course it is not possible to silence a revolver of this type as the explosive noise of the cartridge would seep out of the considerable space between the end of the cylinder housing the cartridges and the barrel. A silencer on the end of such a revolver would have no effect on noise reduction (obviously this fact escaped Melton's attention). The aluminum casting "brass knuckles" featured on page 145, were actually manufactured for the former Public Sport Shops in Philadelphia in 1957, where they were offered for public sale @ .50 cents each. The tear gas pen on page 149 was a commercial product available at shops in the U.S. through the late 60s. The mechanical pencil pistol pictured on page 151, where it is stated by the author that it fires the 6.35 mm cartridge, is actually a simple tear gas gun with a mechanical pencil on one end and the firing chamber on the other end. The one in the illustration is actually missing the end piece that holds the tear gas shell(no bullet)in place. These were actually made in the U.S. by Hagen Tear Gas Co.with U.S. Patents. If one were to attempt to fire the pistol with a full round, one one experience severe injuries. To be sure, there are many bona fide devices listed in the book, but one thing is clear, the author is merely a spectator and not a person with any real knowledge of the craft. I would refer those who seek authentic information on the subject to Dr. John Brunner, a retired O.S.S officer, and the author of several books on the subject of O.S.S. Weaponry. Brunner is truly an authority, who has done extensive personal research to complement his own acquired knowledge; he understands the trade craft in extraordinary detail, having lived it. I fear that Mr. Melton's credentials are far, far more limited, irrespective of his claims.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the best coffee table book on espionage.......2005-02-14

Keith Melton is well known in the community of espionage students and scholars for his interest in collecting artifacts and devices used in espionage. The work is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of photographs of spy gear, weapons, listening devices, concealed cameras, as well as famous and infamous agents, traitors, and informants. The informative text combined with the high-quality illustrations make this book itself a collectible item. A great gift item or personal purchase for anyone interested in the history of espionage.

5 out of 5 stars a picture book with a lot to read.......2003-01-26

Great collection but what surprised me was how long it actually took to read all of the text. Packed full of useful information.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Armchair Spies . . ........2002-07-28

1 out of 5 stars spy kit.......2007-04-19

I am going to try to return it. The kit is worth about $3.00
It falls apart and your kid cries.

1 out of 5 stars Ultimate Junk Kit.......2007-02-01

My son was jonesing for this kit, so I got it for him, but never heard about it again (he took it to his mom's house). When I asked a month later, he said it wasn't any good, that nothing worked, and that it broke. I'm only here because I was thinking about getting the Ultimate Car Kit for him for his birthday, but now he says he doesn't want it!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!! :D.......2007-01-09

This kit was excellent! The gadgets really do work! It teaches how to make a circuit box! I really like it. It's certainly WORTH $30! It was fun making different hi-tech spy stuff. I completed everything. I really enjoyed this product! Although some reviewers say the tape doesn't stick, I think it worked out fine. I learned a lot because of the circuit box (my favorite project!). :D

P.S. Kids, when you're writing a comment, look over the words for proper spelling. :)

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE.......2005-06-25

If They say, a sturdy spy kit i guess they mean the box becaues everything falls apart in the kit. It is cool for a little while but then it doesn't work. Worth 5 bucks. With that money save it up for some real spy gear for a micro cammera or something. DO NOT GET

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not worth $30.......2005-03-18

Like the other review said, the tape always comes apart. I would not have wasted 30 dollars just like that, so I bound up the thing with tape. The gadget ideas are creative (and good to little brother-proof your room too!) and it includes spy kit cards that have little did u know things. it also has a 6(or seven or eight, i forgot) page spy "training manual" that has tips on how to use your gadgets and other stuff. Overall, I think this toy is great, but should just something like ~$20. You decide whether you'll buy it or not.

5 out of 5 stars Amber Stone, Agent Zero The Ultimate Spy!.......2005-01-21

This book is compelling and the story is very good with very strong villians lots of actions and a good romance theme. Also it is the sign of the times it could be in 2004 or the future in our world or some alternate universe. It's fiction but it's written in such plain simple english. The adverage reader doesn't have to look into a dictionary to spell every word to know what the big words mean. It's not a boring book it's interesting. It's like looking at a movie in a book. It explains both sides of the story from the terrorists point of view and the Amercian Governments point of view. Through the characters and their behavior and motives. I'm certainly looking forward to reading the sequel to this book. It you like spy novels this is the one book you should read.

    Product Description

Young Bill Wilder is devastated when he learns that his older brother, a naval aviator, is brutally murdered by a sadistic KGB agent in a North Vietnamese prison. He swears to avenge his brother's death, despite objections from his father, who is in the CIA hierarchy.

An insane Ivan Petrov is bent on the destruction of the Wilder family after his own father is arrested by the British as a spy. After executing the oldest of the Wilder sons, he sets his diabolical plan in motion to kill Bill Wilder's entire family.

Wilder and his friend, John Slaughter, both encounter their own version of hell in Vietnam. Wilder must survive in the jungles while being hunted by the Vietcong. Slaughter risks his life to save Wilder's girlfriend, a UPI correspondent in Saigon. A secret turn of events then helps Wilder discover Petrov's true identity.

    The hunt begins.

The climax leads to the top of Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, where the story began years before on August 4, 1964. It is also the date the Gulf of Tonkin Incident took place that escalated the Vietnam War.
