Marine Review.......2007-08-07
I generally don't give negative reviews, but overall, I was disappointed. First, the book is written in Military "Class Outline" format, (and yes I knew this buying the book, and yes I was a Marine Corps Combat Instructor and VERY familiar with these type of outlines), but this means that almost half of the written content has nothing to do with accual useable information but about "instructor prompts" such as gaining attension of the class and how to motivate them to learn the material. The BIGGEST FLAW is that the book constantly references charts and slides (TP#1, TA#6 etc...) but DOESN'T INCLUDE THEM IN THE BOOK! It appears very DATED, if you are at all familiar with older military printouts, this is still one. I hope they (USMC SS School) have updated thier outlines, in look if not for material. If you looking for indidual skills you'll LEARN more just studing a Data Book or reading on line, but then the little info it does include I learned in basic Infantry school and am presuming if you are studing this type of material you already know most of it. For example, total amount of info on "Gillie Suit"; about one paragraph basicly saying to use one. If you are looking into weather or not to employ military snipers, or gain a basic knowledge of thier use in various operations, it may be interesting. Good Luck and Be safe.
Why USMC snipers r the best in the world.......2002-02-25
this book is everything i expected it to be. explains everything you would learn in the USMC sniper school. it's a little basic at first, but is a great source of knowledge on the subject.
Excellent book!.......2001-11-15
Excellent book with a systematic review of all aspect of scout / sniping; it does not just cover the shooting part, but also the tactics, camouflage, egress / ingress, etc... It is mainly aimed at military, not police or civilian use.

Book Description
In the early Italian Renaissance, few courts were as renowned for arts and letters as was the Court of Urbino. Here the consumate image of the Renaissance Man was forged under the benevolent patronage of Guidobaldo da Montrefeltro, the same man who was patron for Baldasarre Castiglione.
At the same time, the art of swordsmanship was undergoing systematic exposiition at he hands of swordmasters who had traveled and taught the nobility of Europe. Recorded in books, a select few of these fighting treatises have survived to the present, allowing a glimpse not only of the techniques employed in both civilian and military swordsmanship, but also into the philosophy advocated for the employment of arms.
Filippo Vadi, working in the tradition of earlier swordmasters both in Italy and abroad, created his own treatise around the 3rd quarter of the 15th century. Closely following the renowned Italian master Fiore dei Liberi, his approach added much that was new; an emphasis on a more linear stance, the first description of what could be thought of as the lunge, conections to the sciences of Geometry and Music that presaged printed manuals of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Filippo Vadi's prologue is a valuable piece of literature in its own right, a beautiful exposition on the use of arms.
Vadi's book focuses on the use of the longsword, dagger, spear and poleaxe, both in and out of armour. His instructions are clear and precise, enabling reconstruction of medieval swordsmanship from 15th century Italy.
Luca Porzio and Gregory Mele have brouht this text vividly to life with a clear translation and explanatory notes. Published for the first time in English, all 56 beautiful plates reproduced at full size in full color. This book is an exquisite resource for enthusiasts in medieval art, history, fashion, military, reenactment, stage choreography or Western martial arts.

A lavish facsimile of a key swordsmanship treatise.......2005-12-17
Some old swordsmanship treatises are useful only to the swordsman, but some, like Filippo Vadi's Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi are works of art in their own right. This lavish colour manuscript is one of the key works of Italian swordsmanship. Dating from the 1480s it forms an important link between the early 15th century works of Fiore Dei Liberi and the 16th century works of Marozzo, Manciolino et al.
Luca Porzio's fine English translation brings this work to life as an instructional manual in a deadly combat system. Greg Mele's informative introductory chapters add value to an already worthwhile volume. This work is a few years old, but isn't the sort of book that rapidly dates (like an interpretation). It contains sections on longsword, fighting in armour with sword and pollaxe, dagger and unarmed vs dagger.
Anyone interested in 15th century artwork, the medieval teaching process, the history of fencing, medieval or Italian swordsmanship, or just how to use a sword, should rush to get a copy of this fine work.

Italian Sword Study.......2005-02-06
I found Arte Gladitoria Dimicandi, 15th Century Swordsmanship of Master Fillipo Vadi to be an invaluable resource to a student of Italian swordsmanship. In the spirit of Fiore dei Liberi, Vadi has put in writing and especially spectacular color illustration plates of the various stances, etc used by the 15th century long swordsman. The translation is excellent and the editorial and references are equally helpful.
This book is a 'must have' for any historian or student of the sword.
Book Description
The Greek hoplite, the archetypal spear-armed warrior, is perhaps the most prevalent figure in our view of the 'Golden Age' of Ancient Greek civilisation. It was during this period that the state began to take greater responsibility for military organisation, and the arming and equipping of its citizens. From the victory at Marathon over Darius of Persia, through bitter inter-state warfare, to the rise of Philip of Macedonia and his son Alexander the Great, the hoplite soldier was in the front-line. This title narrates the life and experiences of the common Greek warrior, how he was recruited, trained and fought, and also looks in detail at how his weapons, armour, shields and helmets developed in the course of time.
Customer Reviews:
Informative pamphlet.......2007-09-29
This book has good information, but is small. I would actual only consider it a pamphlet. Was expecting a little more but overall it is a good basic review of the Greek Hoplite with a few good illustrations.
5 Stars not nearly enough.......2007-04-02
If you could have only one book on Greek heavy infantry warfare, this would be it. It examines every facet of the warrior's life in war and peace, in combat and at ease, including gear, appearance, tactics, and personal experience in battle. Gave a very easy-to-read introduction to hoplite battle tactics, and the plates supplement the text well. The plate commentary is extremely detailed.
Flawless.......2006-07-10
Nicholas Sekunda has produced a masterpiece with "Greek Hoplite". He goes into excellent detail describing the training of hoplites, their weapons and equipment, their organization on campaign, and their battle tactics. He also makes excellent use of primary sources, quoting Xenophon, Plutarch, and even the Greek tragedian Aeschylus. The colour plates are also vividly drawn. I honestly cannot think of anything bad to say about this book.
life of a Greek Hoplite warrior........2005-08-18
For anyone interested in ancient Greek military history this is a very informative book. The color plates are beautifully rendered and meticulously detailed. While this book is aimed at the younger reader, anyone with a thirst for knowledge on this subject will find it useful. The text is well written and enjoyable to all age levels.I find myself referencing it often to add realistic images to other works on this subject.
The citizen soldier, his role in the classical Greek warfare.......2004-02-15
What I like about the books of Nick Sekunda is that he always try to make it easy for the common guy, the text is not too academic and not dry like other Osprey Writers, I like the way he put the source, when a author point out the sources he is given you a great help, I always like to start with a book which can guide to another great source of the same theme.
In this book we follow the life common Hoplite and experiences Training,Motivation and Preparation for the Hoplite Battle, the author provides full detail on what they wore, how they fought, and how their function fitted into the structure of Greek society.
We also can see the how his weapons, armour, shields and helmets developed in the course of time, the development of the arms and armour from the pilo helmet to the Phrygian Helmet with 10 fabulous pieces of artwork from Adam Hook with a lot of black and white photos.
The book belongs on every classicist's shelf or fan of the Armours, this is what I enjoy the most of this books the description of the equipment wore by the typical soldier that dominated the classical Greek warfare, you would learn a lot,the volume presents the hoplite during the classical era from the Battle of Salamis to the death of Alexander the Great as clearly as can be imagined.
To learn more about the Warfare in the Classical Period or the Arms and Armours of the Hoplite you should star with the book of "Arms and Armor of the Greeks" by Anthony, M. Snodgrass another great writer is Peter Connolly check "Greece and Rome at War" many illustration and also "Warfare in the Classical World" by John Gibson Warry, "The Wars of the Ancient Greeks" by Victor Davis Hanson(Cassell History of Warfare series)"Thermopylae:The Battle for the West" by Ernle Bradford is an accessible narrative, also give a inside the Greek world and the warfare but if you want more of the Spartan,Hoplite and the Hot Gates check "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield is a novel but with a lot of detail, from the author of the book there are many titles always from Osprey Marathon 490 BC(Campaign 108)is very useful.
Book Description
Translated and interpreted by Christian Henry Tobler.
In the late 14th century, Master Johannes Liechtenauer developed a deadly form of martial art that fully integrated sword, spear, dagger and grappling, in and out of armour,on foot and on horseback. Founding a school of swordsmanship that would dominate Germany for centuries, he recorded his teachings in cryptic mnemonic verses and swore his students to secrecy. In the 15th century, Sigmund Ringeck,a master of the 'Liechtenauer school,' broke the secrecy and explained the verses in detailed instructions. CHRISTIAN HENRY TOBLER has rendered this key text into English for the first time, and provides photographic interpretations of each technique of this 'secret' martial art.
Customer Reviews:
A must.......2006-02-27
This book is essential for anyone interested in doing medieval swordsmanship. Tobler has done all the hard work for you, he has interpreted the moves perfectly. There is very little guesswork left up to you, each move has many pictures showing every subtle change in position. Easy to follow and the pictures are very clear. A great book, none better.
An Absolutely Indispensable Reference for the Student of Medieval Swordsmanship and Western Martial Arts. .......2005-12-12
`Western martial arts are every bit as sophisticated as their Asian counterparts. The German martial systems incorporate both armed and unarmed combat, with and without armor, on foot and on horseback, using daggers, long and short swords, bucklers, shields, falchions, and spears and poleaxes.'
In Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship, Christian Henry Tobler has done an outstanding job of introducing the reader to the skills and methods of the Germanic man-at-arms.
The book is broken down into five major sections:
>> Longsword Techniques
>> Sword & Buckler
>> Wrestling Techniques
>> Armored Combat
>> Mounted Combat
Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship is an interpretation of the teachings of Master Johannes Liechtenauer and of the later work in the 15th Century of Sigmund Ringeck, a descendant of the Liechtenauer school and master-at-arms to Albrecht, Count Palatine of the Rhine and Duke of Bavaria.
While there were, of course, no photographs in the 15th Century ~ Christian Henry Tobler has filled Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship with hundreds of photographs demonstrating the techniques of the masters. He has made an accurate interpretation of the techniques described in the writings of the masters and displays that described in photographs.
Each photograph is clear and in sequence allows the reader to learn the techniques of the masters. These techniques are highly effective and the more one practices, the greater insight one gains into the secrets of the masters of arms of the 15th Century.
The book concludes with a glossary of terms well-worth learning to improve understanding of this text and others related to it.
I found Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship to be an absolutely indispensable reference for the student of Medieval Swordsmanship and Western Martial Arts.
Excellant Work.......2004-08-06
I first bought Mark Rector's _Medieval Combat_, but I didn't feel I truly grok'd many of the illustrations in that book until after I read this book.
For the most part I think that Mr. Tobler's interpretations of Ringeck's verse are dead on target. But in many cases, it seemed pretty nebulous what Ringeck meant - not that surprising considering we are trying to take a very abstract description of a full-sensory 4d event - verbal, and put back all those lost details.
In those cases were I couldn't figure out for myself what Ringeck meant, Mr. Tobler's work seemed at least internally consistant, and well thought out.
Again, excellant.
Excellent.......2004-06-22
This book is very clear, well written, and wonderfully photographed.
It provides an excellent view of 15th century european martial arts as being every bit as advanced as those of the orient.
The instructions are clear, and the methods practical.
If you fence, practice kendo, or any other sword art, and are interested in learning how fights were really fought (as opposed to how Hollywood wants us to think they were) I fully recommend this book.
Great Book!!!.......2004-03-26
Ever dreamt of being that Knight breaking lance and thrashing sword upon enemy? Your dream can easily come true! This book, Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship is by far one of the best books I have whitnesed. The book shows people combat techniques for a wide diversity of styles. It shows armed combat, sword fighting, unarmed combat and much more that deals with the sword and even a section on fighting on a horse. Even after training with the sword, this book will expand one's knowledge of swordsmanship. The book is worth every penny of the price. It also serves as a great reference book if one is to fight at a show. This is a book that you definently want to pick up!

Book Description
In the 1st century BC, Strabo wrote of the Celts: ‘The whole race... is madly fond of war, high-spirited and quick to battle... and on whatever pretext you stir them up, you will have them ready to face danger, even if they have nothing on their side but their own strength and courage’. This book gives an insight into the life of the Celtic warrior, and his experience of battle – on foot, on horseback, and as a charioteer. It also details Celtic society and studies the vital ritual nature of Celtic warfare, from the naked gaesatae to the woad-painted warriors.
Customer Reviews:
A good title for the amateur historian or wargamer.......2007-10-01
Like all Osprey books, this volume is intended to give the reader a basic introduction to the subject, rather than a deep academic understanding. This volume succeeds in that endeavor. The book describes the basic societal structure of the Celtic peoples in the time period addressed, with information on arms and equipment, rituals, approaches to warfare, etc. The color plates are well done.
This particular book does not in any way present a political argument regarding the relative cultural merits of the Celtic peoples versus the Romans, and it is hard to see whay a reviewer would attack it on those grounds. I can only assume from his review here and in a number of other books about the Celts that reviewer Guardala has some kind of bizarre axe to grind.
Celtic Warrior.......2007-03-31
An essential book for someone interested in Iron Age European warfare. This book begins with an introduction to the identity of the Celts, and then goes on to give a chronology of major events in their history between the beginning of the Halstatt period and the Construction of Emperor Hadrianus' Wall. The next section tells specifically of the warrior's role in the structure of society, his spirituality, and how he could gain or improve his standing in the tribe. Next, the author gives a description of the appearance, dress, and battle gear of the Celts. After this is 'The Face of Battle' shows how the Celt fought and the Celtic warrior's experience in battle. The final section, 'Aftermath' tells of the warrior's superstitions and the importance of sacrifice, spoils of war, suicide, headhunting, and splendid burial in the warrior's culture. After this comes a brief glossary, biblography, places to visit, a detailed plate commentary, and an index. The plates, by Wayne Reynolds, are excellent, depicted colorful and powerful scenes.
Plate A shows us the standard Gaulish noble warrior, with his weapons, armor, clothing, and gear.
Plate B shows the Battle of Telamon, 225 BC, in which the Gaesati and the Gauls of northern Italy were defeated by the Roman Republic. Several naked Gaesati are shown trying to defend themselves from the legionaries' pila.
Plate C is a detailed depiction of the helmets, shields, spearheads, chainmail, and swords used by Gaulish warriors.
Plate D depicts a brightly-clad British chieftain meeting with a client warrior, whose young son is the foster-son of the chieftain. According to custom, the father and son do not acknowledge each other.
Plate E shows a horse-warrior of the Senones, a Celtic people of Cisalpine Gaul, and gives visual details on the gear of the Celtic cavalryman.
Plate F shows a young Cisalpine warrior displaying the severed head of a Roman soldier he has just slain in single combat.
Plate G, visually one of the most exciting in the book, shows the valiant charge of the Nervii and their fellow Belgian Gauls at the Battle of the Sambre, 57 BC. This Gaulish army was made almost entirely of infantry, yet they were upon the Romans so quickly that, had Caesar not arrived, several of his legions would have been routed.
Plate H gives us a British warrior, with his arms and chest decorated in swirling woad patterns, in his chariot with his similarily painted charioteer, who wears a headband, a symbol of the Celtic charioteer according to Irish myth.
Plate I shows several warriors like the one in the previous plate skirmishing with Caesar's legionaries during an invasion of Britain. The legionaries were unarmored and carried only sidearms, thus rendering them very vulnerable to the Celts with their chariots and longswords.
Plate J shows the fate of many warriors that were captured in battle-slavery in the southern world. The four captives in this picture, chained together and guarded by warriors, are being exchanged to Roman or Greek traders for wine.
This book, like all Osprey books, presents detailed information in a concise and jargon-free manner It explores the mindset and worldview of the Celtic warrior, and shows why, with their independent culture totally lacking in self-control, they were conquered by the Romans.
I would very highly recommend this book. I would give it 10 stars if I could!
Great source for weapons, armour, tactics, and more!.......2006-08-31
Great source for weapons, armour, tactics, and more! The color plates inside alone are worth the reason to buy this...But it is also filled with great info and more!
YAWN! READ PATRICK GEARY'S "MYTH OF NATIONS.".......2006-02-10
The commentary on the plates are good, but some of the plates seemed almost cartoonish. Certainly not up to Angus McBride's standard. Their rigid individualistic and ritualistic military methods ensured their destruction! The author is another excuse maker who can't accept that "Rome Triumphed against the odds." No one before the 18th century called themselves Celtic! These various tribal peoples had no permanent victories and their oral traditions prove nothing! "They refused to write their histories down. Since they were not a singular people with cities as in a CIVILIZATION, one should not be surprised that they rejected literacy" The written histories are largely backed by the archaeological record. Basically, there is little in this book that is new or insightful. If you like this topic read juliette Wood, Miranda Green, & Barry Cunliffe's books.
Celtic Warrior.......2004-02-15
Yet another great one from Osprey. Great easy to read info and history on the Celtic Warrior from the 300 BC-AD 100 time period and the illustrations are flat out amazing. Highly recomended for anybody interested in the Celts as well as reenactors and SCA types!

Okay, I'm impressed!.......2003-03-15
Talk about getting a "two for one" deal! When I saw this book I was expecting to have to sift through some boring, rehashed history of the SAS, I was pleasantly surprised! Not only is this excellent book a well written and easy to read Narrative of the SAS, it's a complete Survival and "How To" Book also! Author Mike Robinson is well known for his many other books on Special Operational Forces around the world.
Each topic is covered in detail, how to pull off cold weather operations, small unit tactics, desert work, rappelling, general survival, basic medical, chemical operations, Signals, radio work, weapons, staying hidden, booby traps, handling guerrilla troops, and much much more!!!! I stayed up all night reading this book and couldn't put it down!
The exotic pictures really set the book off well and each diagram of tactics is well presented. The information is top notch, not the usual "I was with em and killed a hundred people" type thing at all. You REALLY get your money's worth from this book! You'll be impressed (and educated!)
A good overview........2002-06-21
SAS shows training for every Special Forces troops in a fairly comprehensive overview. It is not easy to be in this elite group, and men must be commited to get there. Since 9-11 there is a new awareness of the dangers SF face to protect freedom, and a new appreciation.
If you want to know the path some of the men and women take, read this book.
The modern knights of Britain are the SAS (Special Air Servi.......2001-04-21
Mike Robinson is a photojournalist who uses his artistic skills with the camera and drawings to chronicle the selection, training, testing, and intellectual requirements of this elite Regiment. The many photographs and drawings add to the scenes, but it is his articulate writing style that reveals an excellent writer sharing the world he knows. Robinson is a pseudonym for a man who served with the British Army and in overseas forces.
For the writers:
If battles are part of your story whether modern, fantasy, science fiction, history, war, romance, every genre, then seeing real heroes in action adds to your knowledge base and will make your warriors and their fights believable.
Suppose a highly trained SAS agent who is caught by time finds himself in the midst of the "French and Indian War" or "The War of the Roses." Imagine the great advantage for the "Redcoats" if a team of specialists happened to cross the Bermuda Triangle and find themselves in the midst of American war for Independence. There is no limitation for imagination.
As I read this book, I felt as if I were a miner plucking nuggets with every shifting of the sand. I hit the golden mother lode. Though I had purchased this book as a reference for my own creativity I found myself absorbed and involved -- Mike Robinson has crafted a masterpiece.
The book:
The SAS was formed in Africa over 50 years ago. The Regiment still wins most of their confrontations. Why? To become a member a man must overcome a wide range of training that includes physical, mental, weapon, equipment, paratrooping, medical, analysis, and more. The consistent training means that every member knows what to expect from others, and they build on a bond of absolute trust within each four-man Sabre Squadron.
Robinson's dedication in the Preface is a profound statement of his respect for these heroes: "For the cornerstone of their success has always been, and will always be, the individual SAS soldiers themselves. It is they who win, because they dare, often against impossible odds and at the cost of their lives. To these men this book is dedicated."
Overviews of the chapters:
* Joining the SAS -- volunteers must pass challenges that include navigation by compass and distance in areas that do not provide visible landmarks; jungles, deserts, mountains, or any place where weather has limited the visibility. Additionally, to become a member of the SAS each man must endure exhaustion and pain in their effort to reach the next rendezvous.
* Weapons Skills -- beginning with a day in 1972 when 250 guerrillas attacked nine SAS soldiers who, with a few local gendarmes and tribesmen, defeated the attackers this book documents weapons, skills, and uses including: snipers, battles, armament, intrusion defensive positions, and more.
* Explosives and Sabotage -- with knowledge and training SAS four-man patrol can cause damage that brings aggressive enemies to a stop.
* Counter-Terrorist Tactics -- terrorists are analyzed and a group of no more than 50 full-time soldiers are on call to defend and defeat terrorism tactics. This section includes descriptions of a warfare kit, dress, weapons, and exercises in the "Killing House."
* Fighting as a Four-man Team -- each regiment consists of four four-men troop specialists: medic, communications, linguist, and demolitions expert; also each man has at least one specific patrol skill. As their experiences with the SAS increases, so does the variety of these skills.
* Silent Killing Skills -- to survive when behind enemy lines each member is trained to kill without being seen. Various tools and methods are described.
* Medical Expertise -- trained to use what is available in the locale and in a med pack, these men help their comrades and friendly causalities.
* Civil Disorder Control -- in the midst of civil unrest extremists often use the turmoil to further their own ends. The Regiment have skills to "surgically remove" the subversives.
* Observing the Enemy -- camouflage and concealment skills allow a patrol to move into "hot spots" and strategize for victory.
* Signals and Radio Skills -- all soldiers are trained in the art of using communication equipment, hand and body signals, and Morse code.
* Behind Enemy Lines -- this includes destroying enemy communications, rescue missions, and survival.
* Staying Hidden -- trained to remain hidden even in the most boring or difficult conditions is the difference between success and failure. The SAS has embraces Risk.
* Operating in Hostile Regions -- SAS troops work and battle in the freezing arctic, hot humid jungles, barren desert sands, islands or on the ocean.
* Specialist Insertion Methods -- heavy transport aircraft, parachuting from high or low altitudes, helicopters where troops rappel down from the fuselage, canoes and other water flotation devices and stealth are only part of the skills used to reach the mission location.
* Booby Traps -- these devices are designed to maim rather than kill, and defeat the enemy's morale. The loss of morale creates carelessness, fear, and suspicion.
* Glossary -- of the weapons and equipment used by the SAS.
Five stars -- for the excellent writing, photography, drawings, and information this book. It is not only an excellent reference book, it is an incredible history.

One of My favorite GD Photo Histories.......2006-08-07
Squadron/Signal has another classic volume with its Panzer Grenadier Divison Grossdeutschland. This outstanding book has a detailed photo history of GD from its formation to the modern day memorial to the division. It's truly a cradle to grave coverage of the Wehrmacht's premier division.
Of course there are some other more comprehensive volumes out there, but for the money this one is first rate. And there are enough unique photos found only in this volume to make it well worth adding to your GD library.
Excellent.......2004-07-25
As webmaster of http://members.shaw.ca/grossdeutschland (whose content is being ported to http://www.deutschesoldaten.com , also mine), I rate this reference on the GD as one of my favourites.
Thoroughly excellent photos and captions.
However, maps and organograms of the division are copied from Spaeter's history, and don't reveal much detail - these maps show no contours, and rarely any unit smaller than a regiment. Some of the black and white drawings are superfluous and taken directly from the IN ACTION series by the same publisher.
Nonetheless, some rare photos and a good overall flow as well as day by day history of the major events. This could have been organized better also, but in toto this book is an invaluable resource for those interested in GD.
An excellent glipse into an elite Werhmacht unit.......2001-06-29
Panzer Grenadier Division: Grossdeutschand is something of a pictorial history of one of the German Wehrmacht's most illustrious units. Often overshadowed by the accomplishments and atrocities by her sister units of the Waffen SS, it is generally agreed by both historians and contemporaries that the Grossdeutschand divisions fought with the same levels of elan, without the stains of dishonor. Throught the illustrations, Horst Scheibert captures every aspect of the brutal was in Russia, from the lowes in the fighting to the forced marches and rearguard actions. This book is a must for both modeler and history buffs.
