    Book Description

Charles Hamilton Smith's illustrations of soldiers of the British Army are a faithful and delightful record of how Wellington's troops were uniformed and equipped. Wellington's Army presents a collection of these sought after plates in a special, large format and provides a superb evocation of British military uniforms during the closing years of the Peninsular War and at the epic battle of Waterloo. The plates, drawn from life and completed in 1814, cover all the branches of service including line infantry; light infantry and rifles; heavy and light cavalry; general officers; foreign troops; artillery and engineers; and cadets and veterans. Each plate is accompanied by an incisive text by the leading expert on Wellington's troops - Philip Haythornthwaite - which discusses the unit in question, the uniform and its significant features. Wellington's Army also includes an extensive introduction analyzing the evolution of the British Army of the period and examining the colorful life of Charles Hamilton Smith.

4 out of 5 stars Part of a useful series of booklets.......2007-06-14

These series of drawings by Joineau are quite useful in identifying and tracking changes in uniforms of the various units. The author has gleaned from other sources (especially French) and has translated the info into clear precise drawings. Given the varying and sometimes conflicting sources, the author has done a decent job.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Plates, Great Book: more than worth the shelf space and money.......2007-07-26

This is a wonderful book with over 100 color plates. I counted and this does not include the blow-ups of many parts of these that are presented separately. The quality of the plates varies as three different artists were involved in the project, but even the worst are quite good. There is a definite bias to the uniforms of the French and its allied nations (see the list below). Accompanying nearly every plate is a page describing the scene and its circumstances or perhaps general information about a battle, campaign and uniforms. The one thing I would have liked when I was thinking of buying this book was a better idea of what was in it. So below I have summarized the sections and plates. The plates are of French troops unless otherwise stated and where there is more than on plate it is recorded (#). Some Plates have no accompanying information (eg chapter title pages) and so I have not described these.

      4 out of 5 stars A great resource!.......2006-11-10

This is a very unique approach to a book about uniforms. Instead of just several still pictures with brief captions, this book gives stories that make the uniforms really come to life. As an avid reader of Napoleonic books and collector of miniatures, I give this two thumbs up for the vast number of uniforms it covers, the nationalities (there's more than the French) represented, and the stories/information that you learn from the author. A great read and great reference overall.

      5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2006-08-14

A very worthwhile book for the wargamer and modeller. Pictures were highly detailed and provided a good reference source. Outstanding book well worth the money.

very good book and excellent color plates, but a bit scewed towards french uniforms and some important nations missing. no austrians for example.

      Book Description

Owing to the heavy casualties suffered by the carabiniers in the 1809 campaign, the Emperor decreed that they should be armoured to the same advantage as the cuirassiers. In this way the two corps drew together in being the only troops of the Grande Armeé who were armoured, while at the same time they diverged in breaking away from their traditionally similar dress. Emir Bukhari does a splendid job of examining the uniforms and equipment of Napoleon's cuirassiers and carabiniers, in a text complemented throughout by numerous illustrations and diagrams including eight full page colour plates by the ever popular Angus McBride.

      5 out of 5 stars The Napoleon's elite cavalry.......2002-01-10

This books provides a excellent insight on the France's most dreaded cavalry units: the cuirassiers (armored cavalry). A lot of good illustrations from the period. It provides a good deal of information, unlike other books on this series, about the cuirassier's tactics and organization as well. A correct (and cheap!) source of information for modellers and people interested.

      5 out of 5 stars A well above-average reference for figure modellers........1997-11-28

This book is yet another fine example of its kind. Reproduced illustrations of period costume, as well as the colour plates, provide modellers with a significant amount of reference.

        Book Description

The chasseurs, being the indigenous French light horse, can perhaps therefore be equated best with the infantry demi-brigades of this period, a half-trained, unprofessional, make-shift collection, making up with zeal what they lacked in experience, a qualification which in no way diminished the importance of their role within Napoleon's all-conquering army. Emir Bukhari's fine text examines the dress and equipment of Napoleon's line chasseurs, plus the histories of individual regiments in a volume containing a plethora of illustrations and diagrams including eight full page colour plates by popular artist Angus McBride, showing a variety of uniforms in admirable detail.

Any book that deals with uniforms has to have good, real looking pictures. this book only has two. All the other color pictures do not look real and they look very old. But, most pictures in this book are b/w.In this book it doesn't go very in depth about the uniforms.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate, Thorough, Enlightening.......2000-06-24

If I had to reduce a review of this book to one sentence it would be this: If it has Rene Chartrand's name on it, buy it.

Rene Chartrand is one of the most meticulous and accurate researchers that is available today. Additionally, he is an excellent author and enjoys his subject matter. His books are well-research, scholarly, and authoritative. This one is no different.

He covers the subject matter thoroughly, and illustrates it with excellent examples of uniforms using the talents of Rousselot, Detaille, and Herbert Knotel, the last borrowed from the superb collection of Colonel John Elting.

This is not just another uniform book. It is logically organized, has some excellent original artwork by Christa Hook, and can stand on its own as an accurate reference work.

I highly recommend it, and it is a bargain at the price asked.

Jack Dempsey is one of the authorities on uniforms of the Napoleonic period. His work is truly definitive, and his research is impeccable. This volume is a must for all students and enthusiasts of the period.

This book covers the prints on the Grande Armee by one of the famous artists of the period, greatly enhanced by the author's expert text. Dempsey knows his subject matter and tells it like it is. His work is thoroughly reliable, and this book belongs on every Napoleonic bookshelf.

I highly recommend this, and all of Dempsey's work. This ranks in the same category as the uniform volumes by Colonel John Elting, Michel Petard, Eugene Leliepvre, and Lucien Rousselot. It is a primary uniform source for the Napoleonic period and an outstanding addition to our collective knowledge of the period.

This is the way how a book about the hisory of military uniform should be written! We'd got so many of fake ones - and this one is a real treasure! There is only a thing - the author states that there is no material containing Hussars regiments which has been written and put together in one volume. I would like to reffer to the great L. Fallou's work "Notre Hussards", published in 1902 in Paris that pretty much covers the subject of the hussars' development starting from the very first regiments of the XVII century.

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding........1999-05-12

Little needs to be said. If this book were only a reproduction of these plates, it would be a bargain, but Dempsey's commentary provides a great deal of insight placing the plates in context and identifying anomolies and commonalities. I can only add that I have no idea how a set of contemporary plates will illustrate the professional or mercenary aspects of the army!?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but lacks in-depth analysis of professionalism........1999-01-01

I found it an excellent book but it really lacks specifically an in-depth analyses of the mercenary and professional aspect of Napoleon's Army.

        Book Description

When the French Revolution broke out in 1789, France possessed numerous colonies spread over three continents. To defend and keep the peace in these territories, a small army of colonial troops, distinct from the metropolitan line regiments or marines, had existed since the days of Louis XIV. This book examines the history and uniforms of the often-overlooked French armies in Saint-Domingue, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St Lucia, Tobago, Ile-de-France, La Réunion, Pondichéry, Guiana, Senegal and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. The text is backed by numerous illustrations offering a rare glimpse into dress and equipment of Napoleon's overseas army.

        5 out of 5 stars Island Hopping.......2000-07-20

This subject has not been neglected, it has been largely forgotten.

The French armed forces during the Napoleonic period, encompassing the Grande Armee, the navy, and what- and whomever else could bear arms, numbered over one million at the Empire's height.

This interesting, engrossing tome by a definite authority on the period, fills a long-neglected gap that helps us with our understanding of the period and our general knowledge of those that fought for France and Napoleon from 1792-1815. It also gives us a few surprises.

Exotic and esoteric units and fighting men grace the pages of this interesting volume, highlighted by the realistic, superb paintings of Francis Back, who also illustrated the author's books on Napoleon's navy and the French Army in the War of the American Revolution.

Here you will find the top or round hat as a definite, and quite handsome, item of military uniform, the French use of sepoys (native troops) in India, and the fortunes and foibles of France's overseas possessions.

This book is highly recommended. As I have mentioned before, if the book has Rene Chartrand's name on it, buy it-it is guaranteed to be well-research, well-written, and accurate.
