Book Description

Graham Mackintosh has done it again! With his characteristic humor and sense of wonder still undimmed, this beloved author brings his fans another armchair adventure in Baja California. This time, Mackintosh has substituted depth for breadth, exploring multiple aspects of just one area, the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir. His enthusiastic curiosity ranges from world history to natural history, and he writes with verve about everything from surviving thunderstorms to the experience of hearing about 9/11/01 on a small radio in a remote mountain tent. But Mackintosh is at his best writing about relationships, particularly his evolving relationship with his canine companions. His honesty, his maturing spirituality, and his easy way with words all combine to make "Nearer My Dog To Thee" a wonderful addition to the literature of Baja California. [Judy Goldstein Botello, Author of The Other Side]

The Sierra San Pedro Mártir is Baja California's "sky island," where an ancient forest seems to touch the stars. At last, in Graham Mackintosh, this unique, breathtaking, and alas, endangered place has its bard.

Nearer My Dog To Thee is a both charming and important page-turner of a book. When I put it down, I felt as if I had spent four glorious months in the Sierra San Pedro Mártir myself. And what an adventure it was! Shooting stars, packs of coyotes, a soaring eagle, thunderclaps and crashing trees... I learned about mushrooms and condors, stars and comets and the planet Mars, and best of all, I "met" Pedro, a rescued mutt from Rosarito, and Penny, the cute-as-a-button little coyote-chasing terrier.

This book will delight anyone who loves Baja California, its high sierra, and most of all, dogs. Graham Mackintosh shows us that, indeed, God is dog spelled backwards.

[C.M. Mayo, Author of Miraculous Air: Journey of a Thousand Miles through Baja California, the Other Mexico.]

5 out of 5 stars MacKintosh's Best Baja Book.......2004-02-28

Graham MacKintosh's Into a Desert Place introduced us to this UK schoolteacher who walked the entire perimeter of Baja.
His writing style has a humility and a thoughtfulness which makes him a pleasure to read. Rather than committing the travel book era of using factual trivia to make the book more weighty, he uses allusions and background explanation as a way so that his life in the places he visits has a context and an imaginative quality. This book, Nearer My Dog to Thee, finds Mr. MacKintosh an older, but no less idealistic and whimsical,
traveller, now over 50. The "plot" of the story is quite simple.
Graham takes a pound pet from Rosarito to a remote Baja national park forest, for a Summer of camping. Mackintosh's non-fiction has a story-telling quality which makes the trip much less important than the travel.

So many travel book authors spend too much time trying to impress the reader with erudition or descriptions of the awe-inspiring or absurd. MacKintosh here merely lets a story flow, about a trip not many of us have taken, but we all wish and think we could. That may be the beauty of his writing--this is not "trip as impossible journey", but "the natural world as accessible to all".

I have a few minor quibbles with the book. Sometimes he refers to traits as "Mexican", when the traits are more properly the traits of some people he meets in Mexico. That's not to say that he's exhibiting any disturbing bias--he clearly is deeply fond of the Mexicans he meets. Rather, it's a narrative shorthand device I find imperfect.

Still, I give this book the highest recommendation. I'd read each of his other books, and thought them grand. But this more mature man exhibits a more mature writing style in this work.He still has the boyish enthusiasm, but it's now admixed with an integrated, mature perspective. I won't quite say that the "old Baja hand" is becoming old, because this one is refreshing and new. But I will say there's a richness here that really inspires.

It's hard to describe a MacKintosh book to the novice, because the combination of down-to-earth first person narrative and interesting historical detail is so deftly done. His narratives are friendly, in the way James Herriott short stories were amiable. But he casts his net quite widely--after matters of the heart and spirit, admissions of personal shortcoming, and sheer reverie at the joy of being alive.

I read Graham Mackintosh because while taking me to the middle of nowhere, he makes me nod and say "yes, I relate to that". I'll take that over any number of avalanche deaths and murderous seas in my travel reading. He's the travel writer for people who really prefer amusing, friendly novels.

5 out of 5 stars A joyful armchair adventure in Baja California.......2004-01-17

Nearer My Dog To Thee: A Summer In Baja's Sky Island is a joyful armchair adventure in Baja California, through the eyes of devoted dog lover Graham Mackintosh. An exciting memoir of shooting stars, wondrous wildlife, majestic wilderness, the ferocity of a storm, kindness shown a rescued mutt, and much more, Nearer My Dog To Thee is written in a smooth, accessible style that makes following the real-life saga an extra special treat. Nearer My Dog To Thee is enthusiastically recommended reading for armchair travelers in general, and nature lovers who have their own canine companions in particular!

Book Description

Long Island's North Fork is a pastoral quilt of vineyards and farms by the sea. To the north are the sandy beaches of Long Island Sound and on the south a collection of harbors and fishing villages overlooking Peconic Bay. Stretching out some thirty miles from the mainland, this narrow peninsula is a place of serenity and beauty.

Renowned photographer Jake Rajs has captured the spirit of the North Fork--the glorious color of sunrise and sunset, the calm waters, and the vast expanses of fields and wetlands. He focuses on architectural landmarks as well--the Victorian houses on Shelter Island, eighteenth-century barns, the Orient Point Lighthouse--to create a complete portrait of this unspoiled land.

I live in the village where the divide between the north and south forks occur. It is the north fork that is the jewel of mother nature. Surrounded by water, one can not avoid the beauty of the sunset. The last remaining agricultural parcels on Long Island remains here for now. Sunrise over the farmland brings warmth within. These photos capture it so well, one of the best books on the effects of the hours of the day on the land and seascape.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Trust This Review.......2007-01-07

I'm envious of the author. I photograph landscapes and I spend a lot of time on the North Fork of Long Island. But mostly I photograph mountains or deserts. I've never been able to figure out how to capture the beauty of the East End of Long Island. But Jake Rajs has the vision to do the job.

One thing he realizes is that if flat land doesn't provide enough variety, one should photograph the sky. Take pictures of it in all its moods: clear, cloudy, stormy. But don't just take pictures of the sky. Even though the sky may take up most of the frame, relate it to the land. There's a picture of a farmhouse on Oregon Road. I've biked by this farmhouse often and wondered how it could be photographed. Rajs answered that question. The horizon in the picture is in the bottom fifth of the frame. The sky in the upper four fifths of the picture is full of fleecy clouds. The field in front of the farmhouse and the trees around it are a dark shadowed green, and the farmhouse is a tiny square of bright buff with a red roof, illuminated by the setting sun. The scene reminds me of a Rene Magritte landscape. And this picture conveys a feeling of the relationship of this farm to the broad North Fork sky more clearly then I ever felt before I saw this picture.

Mount Beulah Road is just a few hundred yards long. I travel it often and always feel comfortable on it. But it was only when I looked at Rajs' picture of the greenery stretching and touching from each side of the road that I realized that I felt this way because I was so tenderly enclosed.

There is a giant wire-frame heron construction near Cedar Beach, that is claimed to be a work of art, and that many in the community consider an eyesore. But framed against a cloudy evening sky with a pier and a light patch in the sky drawing us back to this work, we are certain that this photograph is a work of art.

I could go on describing picture after picture with high praise. But perhaps it is only those of us who wanted to capture the beautiful and calm sense of this place in a photograph that will think this book wondrous. Or maybe only those who love the North Fork will be interested in poring over this book. But I suspect that all those who love landscape pictures will find pleasure in these images.

And even though this book captures so much of the sea and landscape of the North Fork, Rajs left out a few spots. Now I have to get out to those spots with my camera and see if I can capture some of his vision in my work. I doubt that I can ever exceed his images of the places that he has included in this book.

Book Description

"Let the meek inherit the earth—the rest of us are going to the stars! Here's how it's going to be done." — Robert Zubrin

"These articles are not 'just science fiction.' They are things we can do—and with any luck at all, and vision and determination, we will." — Stanley Schmidt

Take off on a thrilling journey of space exploration and speculation—to the realm where science fiction becomes science fact—as leading writers, researchers, and astronautic engineers describe a not-too-distant future of interstellar travel and colonization. From cable cars that ride "skyhooks" into space to rockets that can refuel out of Martian air, from "terraforming" planets (a process that makes them habitable for human life) to faster-than-light propulsion systems, Islands in the Sky offers an astonishing collection of challenging—and plausible—ideas and proposals from the pages of Analog magazine. Brilliant and provocative, here is fun-filled reading for everyone interested in science, technology, and the future.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a very mixed bag.......2002-03-10

I'm giving this five stars for the benefit of the chapters by Robert Zubrin and Martyn Fogg, which are ingenious and daringly original analyses of astronautic engineering and terraforming, respectively - each is the godfather of his field. The other material ranges from curiously quirky but not well-thought out (on terraforming Venus) to the kind of worthlessly unintelligent and uninteresting speculations you might expect to overhear from some goon at the bookstore but not to read in print (see the chapter on settling the Oort Cloud). This book was assembled as a "best of" selection from Analog; in a better world it would have been edited by the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society, which would have known where to make the cutoff. Still, the good entries are fantastic enough to be well worth the purchase price.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2001-09-25

This book is an excellent collection of essay by the leading producers of cool, far-out ideas alive today. Just reading it will expand your horizons and help you look at the final frontier in a new way.

Some of the essays, such as G. Harry Stine's on Single-Stage to Orbit spacecraft, are on near-term science and technology. Other essays, such as "Islands in the Sky," are longer-term and closer to science fiction. All are good.

My personal opinion is that the asteroids -- not the planets -- are the future of mankind, so the Mars-exploration essays by Zubrin et al. I found less enthralling. But you Mars fans out there NEED this book.

The essay, "The Economics of Interstellar Commerce" alone makes this book worth the cost.

Although I enjoyed John Lewis's _Mining the Sky_ more (simply because my bent is toward the asteroids), this book is better written and required reading. 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars A great book about what could be done........2001-02-27

The book deals with ideas about making space travel easy and colonizing space simple. The first few chapters deal with getting out of the gravity well we call Earth with known science and equipment. The next deal with using the resources that could be found on the Moon, Mars, Mercury and even the Oort Cloud (as well as planting a few colonies here and there)with the knowledge we have and the equipment we could have soon. After that is starts to get harder to picture doing all this projects with current technology. By chapter 8, for explain, we are dealing with terraforming and star engineering. Near the end of the book, starting with chapter 11 we are talking about interstellar space ships and the economices of interstellar commerce. But by than, you think all of it can be done! Each chapter helps to hold up the next one. For example, cheap, easy ways to get into space would cut the cost of space travel and allow for the next step which is exploring the planets and finding resources to help the next step.

4 out of 5 stars excellent reading, but a little far fetched.......1999-09-07

Zubrin makes a very good example of how it could be done. The snag is, that he reaches so far in the future, that it is impossible to imagine it as anything else than science fiction. I would have prefered to have some ideas developed about the colonization of the outer solar system. On the other side, the section about Oort cloud settlements has been thrilling. All in all, it's a very good book and certainly worth the investment buying it.

4 out of 5 stars An uplifting, optimistic view of our future in space.......1998-10-09

I found Islands in the Sky a very entertaining, enlightening and uplifting book to read. It boldly addresses a wide range of subjects dealing with space exploration and appears to come up with concrete answers! There is an underlying optimism in the whole book that given human ingenuity, anything is possible. This is a far cry from the many 'post-modern' books that crowd store bookshelves seeking to convince us that science is not the answer, that mankind is bad and its actions are always in conflict with the environemnt. This book speaks to those of us who believe that we are the masters of our universe.

Some chapters are too abstruse and perhaps only for the specialist, but most of the book is eminently readable. A must for every space enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars The Pilot's Favorite Novel.......1998-01-08

When Ernie Gann wrote this book in 1944 he had just come to realize that the love of flying was going to consume his life. Gann was a left-seat man and he was able to tranfer his need for perfection to the printed page. A veteran pilot will find no flaws or mistakes or stupid exaggerations in the technical descriptions in this book. Ernie Gann will put you in the left seat and make you sweat. He will give you the sense and the thrill of flying a four-engine transport under dubious conditions in 1944. I am sorry this book is out of print. That is truly a shame. GANN IS DEAD. LONG LIVE ERNIE GANN.

4 out of 5 stars The search for, and survival of an aircraft ferry crew.......1997-10-12

Gann keeps you on the edge of your seat as Pilots of the WWII Aircraft Ferry Service search for one of their own that has strayed off course on the way to England. The search continues for the lost and presumed downed plane in the Canadian north. Good story of the fight for survival in bitter low tempartures and what can happen if your unprepared. This story made a good motion picture also. (Andy Devine, John Wayne) I would like to see/buy this story and "The High and The Mighty" ontape if someone has it. Book Description

The author's engaging account of his solo hike along the Arizona Trail—from the Mexican border to Utah. Crossing Arizona takes us on an extraordinary journey across some of the harshest, most remote, and arguably most beautiful natural terrain in the Lower 48. Long-distance hiker Chris Townsend, inspired by the writings of Edward Abbey and Colin Fletcher, set out alone to explore the desert landscape that inspired them. The rough, still-evolving Arizona Trail he hiked runs 800 miles from desert floor, through grasslands, through mountain forests, all the way from the Mexican border to Utah. Along this distinctly American path, Townsend's uniquely British sensibility ensures an entertaining read. Crossing Arizona is both an account of Townsend's adventure, and a chance to experience a truly unique corner of the world. 4 out of 5 stars A good read for those interested in the Desert Southwest.......2006-10-13

I bought this book in Arizona. I traveled there from the east coast to do some desert day hikes. I have not backpacked much since my college days about thirty years ago, when I probably logged about 1000 miles.

I enjoyed this book because the love Townsend has with the wild, and the connection he makes with the natural world in which he has immersed himself. If one does not appreciate that connection this book probably is not for them. The rhythm of the days, the logistics of the trip, and survival in an unforgiving environment are also of interest.

      5 out of 5 stars Arizona Adventure.......2003-10-21

The magnitude of what Chris Townsend`has accomplished by solo hiking the Arizona Trail in 43 days is difficult to comprehend, especially by those who never venture out of the city. As a hiker of over 600 miles of this very new trail, I can appreciate Chris' descriptions of the mountains and deserts through which one passes on travelling from Mexico tto Utah along its very remote course. Chris' writing has steadily improved through the multiple books that he has written and the recounting of this adventure is his best to date. He shares his wilderness philosophy and vision and stresses the importance of preserving what remains of the wild lands as a place for us all to reconnect to our more primal needs for space and solitude and communing with Nature. This is not a mile by mile Trail guide but it provides the flavor of the terrain that one encounters along the Trail. I have used this as one of my resources to guide me along my adventure.

3 out of 5 stars Whingeing along the Arizona Trail.......2003-09-22

Like most tourists, Chris Townsend loves modern conveniences that make his life easier but detests similar amenities when they clash with what he considers should be an untouched wilderness experience.

He lives in Scotland, and thus came to Arizona with the typical Brit attitude of "Look at how you colonials managed to muck everything up since we left." He's full of complaints about Americans who don't appreciate the wilderness, ignoring the fact that even the worst of Americans aren't as bad as the "horrible families" of Britain who consider it sporting to steal cars for a lark and then burn them out of pure meanness.

These writers are boring, and Townsend's rants paint him as an insufferable toff. Sadly, he doesn't seem to appreciate the desert or forests in the same manner as writers such as Joseph Wood Krutch or even Zane Grey. He doesn't appreciate that we live in a messy modern world, with only a few gems of wilderness left.

For example: Townsend cites efforts in the 1960s to dam the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon itself, and the noble efforts to stop it. Excellent. He ignores the alternative that was built with the connivance of the people who stopped the dam -- one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the nation which spews its pollution over tens of thousands of square miles of the Southwest. He also thinks Lake Powell should be drained. Maybe it's time to tear down the Forth Bridge as "unnatural."

His arrogant rants are the equivalent of a Yankee tourist recommending Hadrian's Wall be torn down to restore the natural landscape. Of course, much of it HAS been torn down -- a look at any farmer's barns within a few miles of the wall shows how those Roman building stones were re-used. Anyone who's hiked off a trail knows there's no "untouched" landscape left. And, if you're going to stick to the trail -- this book is about hiking The Arizona Trail -- then you're in man-made country.

Like all too many wilderness advocates, Townsend fails to appreciate the natural world for what now exists. It's like building a replica of a wooden ship; no matter how authentic you make it, it isn't the original. In some cases, it's better than the original. Likewise, the Arizona of today is not the Arizona of a century ago, nor five centuries ago. In some ways, it's better.

Britain is filled with almost 60 million people like Townsend; all whinges, moans and complaints but never the initiative to do anything. Anyone with energy and ambition emigrates, which is why Australia is such a dynamic place. Those who stay home find fault with everything, and particularly with anyone who had the energy to leave.

In brief, the book is the first of its kind so it's the finest yet available. Anyone who plans to do any extensive hiking in Arizona should read it. It contains enough Arizona details to be valuable, enough hiking information to be useful, enough rants to please the beads and Birkenstocks crowd, but far from enough cactus hugging to satisfy a desert rat.

But then, how many readers are likely to be desert rats? Buy it, it's more interesting than those which haven't been published. It's not the type of book to take on a desert hike, but it's a good read before such a walk. Someday, an even better book may be written about The Arizona Trail, but if you plan on waiting that long the trail may be paved by then.

I was a bit disappointed with the SEA FAIRIES, Baum's first book to introduce the characters of Trot and Cap'n Bill. It was adequate but not up to the superlative quality I expect from L. Frank Baum. This book, however, sets things to right. It reads more like the Oz books and even includes characters such as Button Bright and Polychrome who make numerous appearances in the Oz series. It is a fun book that I enjoyed even with my youth far behind me.

In this story, Trot meets Button Bright who has a magical umbrella which takes him where he wants to go. Trot, Button Bright and Cap'n Bill decide to use the umbrella to take them for a picnic out on an island just off the coast. Instead of being taken to that island, however, they wind up on and island in the sky inhabited by tow warring peoples. Our characters wind up in the middle and have to set everyone straight.

It is a delightful tale which should appeal to both boys and girls.

Much as I love the Oz books (and I have all 14), THIS is my favorite Baum book. Sky Island is the continued adventures of Trot and Cap'n Bill (meet them in "The Sea Fairies", also fun) and Button Bright as they face the mighty Boolooroo of the Blues and the beautiful Queen Tourmaline of the Pinkies, Sky Island's two countries and two races. A wonderful tale, which in the process shows us how to get along with those who are different from ourselves.

      3 out of 5 stars Not great.......2002-12-14

This fairy book has some wise philosophy about xenophobia and cruel leadership, but the charm is thin. Baum wrote it during the hiatus when he hoped he'd written his last Oz book. Fortunately, public demand defeated him.

5 out of 5 stars Sky Islands review.......2000-07-16

Being a L.Frank Baum fan, I loved Sky Island. It is a enchanting book with the main characters as a charming little girl named Trot and a kind sailor-by name Capn' Bill. I loved this adventuras book, which involes a magic umbrella and a exciting run-in with some blularoos. I wont give the book away, but if your are thinking about giving this book to a child- (being 14 myself) I still love reading it, and its definetly worth the money and time.
