Didn't live up to my expectations.......2007-03-16
After seeing Melody Carlson's books all over and having read some excerpts, I was eager to read one. Fool's Gold: Color Me Consumed, wasn't quite what I had expected.
The premise was decent, missionary girl, Hannah Johnson, gets caught up in the American way of consumerism. But I wasn't statisfied with the way it was carried out. Some of Hannah's thoughts didn't seem quite rationalized and the conclusion was very sudden, a blanket answer being provided. Sure she had to pay for the mess she got herself into, but it had a 'and they all lived happily ever after' feel about it.
Another thing I disliked was that the book at times had a very conservative tone to it, which I didn't mind, and at others, not such a conservative tone, as if it couldn't make up it's mind which it was going to be. In fact, a few of situations, especially where Hannah told the urban legend to her uncle, were quite uncalled for, in my opinion, and didn't even have any purpose in the story.
The book wasn't entirely bad, for it did leave me with some complexities to ponder over and study my own life, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for others to read.
Living the Life of Luxury.......2007-02-27
This story is about a girl whose parents are missionaries, and she goes and stays with her rich family. She realizes how money is not something you would want to deal with financially. Her rich cousin and her aunt take her shopping and get her new stuff. It turns her into a completely different person. She goes to some parties with her cousin and then her parents come back. Before they do she has turned back to her normal self. They end up moving to where she was staying that summer.
My favorite part was when she finally decided that money was not fun to deal with. People who have issues with "always wanting more" should read this book because there are lessons to be learned from it. I did have questions like, "How is she going to pay off the debt that she owes to the store?" I found out she got a job and paid them all off.
not a good book.......2006-07-23
this book was not biblical and could have been way better.
could have been way better.......2006-07-19
Fool's Gold follows the life of a MK teen who comes to the U.S. to live with her newly wealthy relatives. She's depicted as not caring much about fashion. While I loved the contrast between her cousin and her, I could not for the life of me give this book five stars. The main character goes on a spending frenzy after acquiring a credit card and proceeds to shop and max out said credit card. What I hated was how designer boutiques were trashed by the author and cheaper clothing outlets were applauded. I was much like the girl's cousin during my teen years except for one thing: I never stepped foot in a designer boutique. Instead of convicting teens of their spendthrifty ways the author endorses shopping at cheaper stores, even if you are buying things you do not need. The Bible does not condemn wealth; it condemns wealth that comes at the expense of other people or wealth that becomes an idol in your life. We live in a country where Christians don't tithe and yet the author feels free to endorse discount retailers and secondhand shops. This book could have been so much better had the author pointed out that we as a country are not only spending too much on luxury crap, but that we also spend to much at discount retailers. God draws no distinction between a fashionista who spends too much money at a thrift store or a designer boutique. He does have an issue if it becomes an idol to you or you don't tithe or think of other people when you buy it. Lastly, this book forgot the Bible verse in the New Testament that states quite plainly that you cannot serve both God and money. Plenty of people in this country serve money without ever owning a single Prada handbag. That is what made this book bad. The author decided to soften the blow and make the average "I bought too much junk at the big box store" American feel good. Its sad. Two stars. A worthy effort. It could have been way better.
From Goodwill to Orange County.......2006-04-24
Many people think that it would be awesome to be rich and go shopping when ever you want. Wouldn't you? Well Hannah, whose parents are missionaries, is going to live with her aunt, uncle, and her cousin in California. Hannah doesn't have the best sense of fashion, and she doesn't care if she gets her clothes at Goodwill. Vanessa, her cousin, used to be a normal kid just like Hannah, but now she only wears the best clothing. Vanessa gets Hannah to go shopping to get some more fashionable clothes. Hannah ends up loving to shop, but will she stay like Vanessa and continue to buy clothing at the best places and stay in debt?
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Laguna Beach and The O.C. I would also recommend this book who likes the series of Diary of a Teenage Girl, and if you like shopping.
I liked this book because I love to go shopping and it has a lot of drama in it. One thing I didn't like about this book was that they made fun of Hannah for dressing different when she first arrived in California.

A little girl mouse- simple, yet gripping.......1999-05-11
Each of the books in Lucy Cousins's Maisy series manages to be simple and colorful, while still remaining interesting to young children. Children identify with the simple tasks Maisy performs, and adults can enjoy the simplicity of childood. I am an even bigger Maisy fan than my brother and sister!
Really appeals to my toddler!.......1998-09-23
I find the child-like illustrations rather crude but my 18-month old really loves this book! The larger illustrations and "big" board construction make this one of his favorites. The simple visuals make learning a few words at a time easy. He also loves the Counting with Maisy book as well. I am ordering a few more today.
a bright and cheerful colours book for toddlers.......1998-08-24
As always Maisy is a cute character and the book is lovely and bright. The pictures in this book are more complex than some 'learn your colours' books but the fact that the colour mentioned is not necessarily immediately obvious is a strength - it takes learning colours to the next level. Clara, my 3 year old niece, enjoys finding the black spots or the pink whiskers. She will also gratuitously point out that, although the train is green, it has red lines and black wheels.

Book Description
Lucy Cousins outdoes herself with this big, bold, brilliant visit to Maisy's dream world—a kaleidoscopic journey filled with familiar friends and fantastical creatures.
Maisy is fast asleep in her little bed.
Suddenly a dream begins inside her head.
When Maisy dreams that she's going on a journey, it's only natural that all her friends come along, too. Maisy dreams about a red ladybug, and there's Charley flying by with a ladybug umbrella. She dreams of a big orange fish, and she and Panda grab a fin and float along. Soon things get even more amazing—a turtle with a shell made of watermelon, a winged clock with the legs of a bird. And when Maisy finally reaches Rainbowland—well, it must be seen to be believed! Little fans will be reassured to see that Maisy's dreams are much like theirs—incredible journeys to places where the everyday world is transformed by the wondrous workings of the imagination.
Customer Reviews:
Very Cute Book. One of my Little cousin's fave!!! :-).......2005-05-10
The illustrations are so cute painted by pastels and surrounded with think black lines. The book uses all the colors of the rainbow throughout the different paintings, but introduces one color of the rainbow at a time. The book teaches a wonderful concept about colors of the rainbow, yet it also introduces names of objects and things like "clock", "fish", and "bee" while exploring the dream of cute little Maisy.
The plot is "simple, clearly developed, and brief" which makes it easy to read and fun at the same time.

Maisy's Adventures Continue!.......2000-08-27
This is a great coloring book for young children. The pictures are large and not too detailed. Among other things, Maisy rides a horse, feeds the fish and flies a kite. My daughter colored the entire book in one evening! Hooray for Maisey! Hooray for Lucy Cousins!

Book Description
Luzon, Philippines, 1899. Immersed in the chaos and brutality of America's first overseas war of conquest and occupation, Private David Fagen has a decision to make - forsake his country or surrender his soul. The result: a young black man in search of respect and inclusion turns his back on Old Glory - and is hailed a hero of the Filipino fight for independence.
Negro blood is just as good as a white man's when spilled in defense of the American Way, or so Fagen believed. But this time his country seeks not justice but empire. Pandemonium rules Fagen's world, anarchy the High Sheriff, and he knows every time he pulls the trigger, he helps enslave the people he came to liberate.
Not just an account of an extraordinary black solider caught in the grip of fate and circumstance, Cousins of Color tells the story of Fagen's love for the beautiful and mysterious guerilla fighter, Clarita Socorro, and his sympathy for her people's struggle for freedom. Cousins also chronicles Colonel Fredrick Funston's monomaniacal pursuit of victory at any cost and his daredevil mission to capture Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Philippine revolution. Other characters include the dangerously unstable Captain Baston, particularly cruel in his treatment of prisoners and Sergeant Warren Rivers, the father Fagen never had.
Himself a Vietnam combat veteran, author William Schroder hurtles us through the harsh realities of this tropical jungle war and provides powerful insight into the dreams and aspirations of human souls corrupted and debased by that violent clash of cultures and national wills. Based on actual events, David Fagen's pursuit of truth and moral purpose in the Philippine Campaign brings focus to America's continuing obsession with conquest and racism and provides insight into many of today's prevailing sentiments.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent adventure novel based on actual people and events........2006-11-29
Mr Schroder has captured the rough and tumble times back when America stumbled into what became known as the Philippine Insurrection. Once the Spanish were routed from the Philippines, the US entered into a bloody and merciless conflict between the inhabitants and Americans. The actual events dealing with one Private David Fagan, an African-American soldier faced with the issues of suppressing Filipinos fighting for their freedom and the relentless and segregated American army and its brutal campaign. Interesting plotline, good characters, actual events and people blended into an excellent and compelling adventure that begs for life on the big screen.
The author survived combat in Vietnam and knows what fear and death is like and blends those into this powerful story of Fagan as he faces his own fears and deserts and fights against his own countrymen, many of whom dispise him for the color of his skin.
One problem I did have with this excellent novel was the fact that nearly all the African American soldiers speak English as if they just graduated from a well to do college rather than the broken and slang-riddled verbiage that should have been used in the text. Aside from that, the action is brisk, the fear tangible and the humidity almost soaks into the readers finger tips.
Honorable Desertion?.......2006-02-28
We label soldiers like David Fagen deserters. How do we label a nation which first commits treason against a segment of its own citizenry? In this novel, perhaps the most honest account of Teddy Roosevelt's ill-considered war of conquest in the Philippines, Schroder illuminates not only the politics of the invasion, but the human story of one black soldier's heart-wrenching response to being ordered to suppress his 'cousins of color' on behalf of his own suppressor. A veteran of another Asian jungle war, Schroder's landscapes, villages, and cultural insights ring true. His stirring story of a heroic act of conscience is a lesson that even the best of nations must heed. Perhaps Cousins of Color packs such an emotional whallop because we come to understand, in this forgotten chapter of US history, the danger of allowing a president to use the military as a plaything or an instrument of wealth-building. If only the heads on Mt. Rushmore could speak, it's clear that Roosevelt and Lincoln would have much to disagree about.
Engrossing history and character study.......2004-08-05
"Cousins of Color" is a fascinating and enlightening view of America's involvement in the Philippines at the turn of the century. President McKinley has sent US military forces to Manila for 'humanitarian' purposes. This is not a book about the men who make important decisions but about the trickle down effect those decisions have on other men. Schroder's story allows the reader to see what doors are opened by the arrogance of those in power. We see the dark side of some men manifest itself and the strength of character in others come through. It's a book about choices and one man choosing to do what is right over what is expedient.
Outstanding.......2004-08-04
In the tradition of Stone and Vidal, this vivid and visceral biographical novel took me on a page turning journey into the depths of David Fagen's soul. William Schroder has painted a truly astonishing story of one man's agonizing and passionate clash between love of country and personal truth. Set in the Philippines during the Spanish American War, this country's frist encounter with "liberating occupation," I found myself engrossed in this remarkable story and asking the same difficult questions that must be facing many Americans in today's challenging times. When Hollywood makes this into a movie, and surely it will, I pray it will be as honest as this work so richly deserves. Excellent, absolutely excellent.

Fascinating Historical Novel.......2004-08-02
Fascinating Historical Novel, July 30, 2004
Reviewer: S. Esposito (lake havasu, az. United States) - See all my reviews
I must admit I knew very little about the period in time described in Cousins of Color prior to reading the book. Afterward, I felt as if a window to the time period had been opened for me, and I could clearly see the inhabitants going about their lives! The story is fascinating, and I quickly became involved in the tale and the lives of the protagonists. In particular, the dialog seemed unforced and genuine, and the plot flowed seamlessly to the stunning finale. I look forward to more books by this talented author.
