4 out of 5 stars Good overview of change from sail to steam; weak post WW2........1998-08-24

A strong review of the late 19th transition from sail to steam, with lucid insights into the effect of both world politics and Alfred T. Mahan on the construction of modern navies. The book is chock full of the gorgeous drawings and photos we expect of Jane's.

The chapters post WW2 are somewhat cursory and disappointing. It would have been appropriate to include a chapter speculating on the future of fighting ships into the next century.

Book Description

Irish Gangs and Stick-Fighting In The Works of William Carleton, is a collection of stories about Irish stick-fighters, written in the 19th century, by the Irish author William Carleton. Carleton was an Irish stick-fighter himself, and this is the first time that all of his tales about stick-fighting have been collected in a single volume. The stories provide many details about Irish methods of fighting in the 19th century, and great insights into the fighting culture and code - what I call the "Shillelagh Law" - which guided the lives of Irish fighting men, throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Four hundred endnotes, meticulously researched, explain the 19th century Irish, and Hiberno-English terms, used by Carleton throughout the text.

Carleton himself, was an Irish-speaking stick-fighter, who trained and fought as a stick-fighter for much of his early life. That his neighbors, friends and family members continued to do so long after his move to Dublin is evident in The Party Fight and Funeral. Carleton never wrote from a distance, but always from autobiographical material, especially in his earliest short stories like the ones in this volume, and this is further confirmation of the historical accuracy and authenticity of the Irish stick-fighting traditions documented in his works.

"The Battle Of The Factions" tells the story of two feuding Irish clans, the O´Callaghans and the O´Hallaghans, as told by a member of the O'Callaghan family; it has a Romeo and Juliet sub-plot. Neal Malone, the tailor of the O´Callaghan faction in The Battle Of The Factions, is the main character in the comedic, "Neal Malone", the story of a diminutive and heroic fighting tailor. Neal - who wants nothing more than to fight and prove his mettle - is forced to solve the conundrum of getting himself involved in a fight when he is so well liked, even by his enemies, that he cannot find anyone who will fight him. In "The Party Fight And Funeral", a man returns to the village of his youth, only to find that one of his childhood friends has been killed in one of the huge Party Fights which were common in early 19th century Ireland. This sets the stage for numerous anecdotes - some amusing, most incredibly tragic. "The Dead Boxer" is actually a novella set in the 18th century, which involves an Irish stick-fighter and pugilist with a powerful punch, his girlfriend, (who is a member of an enemy Faction - another Romeo and Juliet sub-plot), and a pugilist with a deadly knock-out punch, who seems to make a living extorting money out of the burghers of various towns in Ireland.

All of the tales contained some footnotes explaining Irish words and Hiberno-Irish expressions. The author has expanded on these wherever possible, creating in his endnotes, a glossary of Irish terms from the 19th century.

5 out of 5 stars The More Things Change..........2006-01-30

In the early 19th century, an impoverished Gaelic speaking author named Liam O'Cathalain Anglicised his name to William Carleton, and began publishing short stories in English. A former gang member from the farming villages of what is now Northern Ireland, he wrote about the world he knew, and as a result many of his stories are imbued with the same anti-gang message as your stereotypical movie set in the inner city. His stories tell very much about why young Irish men joined gangs or "factions" as they were called. If a young Irish peasant was a faction member, the landlord and his agents would think twice about evicting him, his family, or his friends. If they insisted, the landlord and his agents would likely end up dead. However, the factions spent more time fighting amoung themselves than taking on the system. In the story "Neal Malone," a doughty, but short, tailor has his desire to make his bones on the gang scene shattered after he marries the nastiest shrew in the parish. In "The Battle of the Factions," the love between an Irish Romeo and Juliet is nowhere near enough to end the pathological hatred that exists between two gangs. Editor John W. Hurley has provided copious notes, which I was very grateful for, as otherwise I would have had a very difficult time the dialogue of the stories, a dialect birthed by the shotgun-marriage between the English and Gaelic tongues. In closing, I have to say that I am very grateful both to Mr. Carleton for writing these tales and to Mr. Hurley for finally reissuing them. For this they both deserve a round of applause.

5 out of 5 stars A great book of Irish tales, stories of great shillelagh fights.......2005-09-06

In my own humble and (admittedly) Irish opinion, this is a great collection of stories by a 19th century Irishman who grew up in the older Irish ways yet was educated in the English ways. Thus, you have a group of stories that the man could have written in Irish but in order to sell the stories at all had to write in English. Carleton is writing during an interesting period, when many of the Irish people still spoke Irish! Yet English was gaining as the dominant language, and when a language passes much culture is lost along with it. Carleton bridges an important gap, and his stories are both important and interesting for that reason.
Hurley published these stories as examples of a dying warrior culture on the brink of passing, for the purpose of revealing real Irish stick-fighting, and it is clearly shown. It does not elaborate on techniques of fighting, but there are passsages that deal with how shillelaghs were treated and hardened for use. Carleton's intention was to write good uniquely Irish tales about great clan fights, and to show the Irish spirit. This book shows all of this.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Irish martial arts.......2002-08-05

Before you see Martin Scorcese's film 'Gangs Of New York', read John W. Hurley's book 'Irish Gangs And Stick-Fighting'. Scorcese's film is based on the first half of the book'The Gangs Of New York' which deals exclusively with Irish gangs. And while it's flashy and exotic, there isn't much substance in the original book; it doesn't explain the traditions of the Irish gangs or the famous Irish shillelagh, it simply describes them in a sensational way. Hurley's book remedies this problem. It provides first hand accounts of Irish gangs and fights, written by a 'reformed' Irish stick-fighter, and vividly describes Ireland's fighting culture which was goverened by a code of honour which Hurley rightly calls 'Shillelagh Law'. If you are Irish or have an interest in Irish gangs, Irish boxing, the shillelagh, or Scorcese's film, you will really enjoy this book - I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE actual Book of Irish Mythology.......2005-08-21

Gods and Fighting Men is an excellent resource because it preserves the lore from the Book of Invasions as well as other sources -- the legends of the earliest inhabitants of Ireland, the coming of the Tuatha De Danaan (The People of Dana) and the stories of Finn MacCumhail.

What is portrayed as "Early Irish Mythology" 99% of the time actually isn't -- the dozens of translations of The Tain, albeit worthy reading, are actually the lore of Ulster, a single Irish province. This makes it Ulster Mythology (regional) more than Irish Mythology (national).

The legends of the Tuatha De Danaan are essential for a comprehensive understanding of Irish mythology, actually comprising the majority of the Mythological Cycle, and deal with the initial settling of all of Ireland.

Unfortunately, it seems to be modern New Age reconstructions of the Mythological Cycle rather than the native stories that seem to be infusing themselves into the mainstream, and that is sad.

In my mind, the Mythological Cycle is the most important cycle in Irish mythology, because it sets up the scenario for all that is to follow. The Fenian Cycle (legends of Finn MacCumhail and his warband) are fascinating not only for their strong associations with Nature, but also for the fact that the stories are well-known both in Ireland and in the Scottish Highlands. The Gods still walked and resided on (or in) the Earth and interacted often with mortals. Magic was all around.

The Tain, on the other hand, is more a time of towns and forts and war-chariots; a time when magic was less present and people were less intertwined with Nature than in the Golden Age. The Gods had already departed our realm and only made brief cameos in the stories.

In summary, Gods and Fighting Men is the actual collection of Irish Mythology from the earliest legends. It affects all of Ireland and the stories are fairly widespread throughout the Gaelic world. Lady Gregory wrote these translations with a view to retain the native Irish sense of story-telling; this she achieved remarkably well.

My one concern is that it would have been nice for Lady Gregory to have cited her sources for each story. I know that in many cases she blended versions from several sources to produce what she saw as the purest form of the story, but a simple listing of these would have been fantastic from an academic standpoint.

Overall this is probably the greatest collection of Irish Mythology I have found so far, albeit Lady Gregory's focus was primarily as storyteller rather than academic (this is not a bad thing -- dry, stale translations of Irish lore would have been extremely anti-Irish in themselves).

This should probably be the FIRST book one reads of Irish Mythology. I highly recommend this book and the fact that it is value-priced definitely doesn't hurt, either. This book is definitely worth several times its cost.

Happy Reading!

4 out of 5 stars A good read, but remember the stylistic differences............2000-06-10

Lady Gregory faithfully renders old Irish stories into a form that we clods that only speak English can understand. She does not, however, make them more prosaic, or fix them into what we normally find as our story format! They are true to the original structures of the genre, and are much more lively and fun for that. My wife places them firmly in the nature of Irish legend, which she calls "We went over there and stole their cow!" (Tain Bo Cuailnge is basically a story of a cow theft, and is one of the most famous stories of Irish legend). I love the split style, and it does give the reader a good understanding of the way stories were related in the old days. A must for those who want to know where some of the ancient Irish names derive!

5 out of 5 stars Irish Myths brought to Life.......1999-02-09

The works of Lady Gregory are the best way to get a pure taste of the original Irish Myths - unless you are fluent in Gaelic and can get a hold of older copies. Lady Gregory's elequent speech and style breathes life into Ireland's forgotten Heroes and Gods!

Book Description

Fighting for Ireland? is the first in-depth account of the evolution of the Irish Republican strategy. M. L. R. Smith demonstrates the tension in the movement between ideology and strategic realities regarding the use of force. Contrary to the movement's vigorous and assertive public face, this study uncovers an organization characterized more by a sense of chronic insecurity than by certainty and continuity. This updated paperback edition is essential reading for anyone who wants to disentangle the complex issues and motives behind IRA violence.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The fallacies of the IRA.......1999-02-15

MLR Smith did an extrodinary job of portaying the military history of the IRA. He explicates the Anglo-Irish Treatry and implores the pragmatic achievments of Michael Collins. From the Civil War and hencforth, Smith examines the lapse of political ends in the IRA or the irregulars. He compares the fallacies in the bombing campaigns throughout the fifties to the philiosophies on Von Clausewitz' "On War." Never were there any political motives in the campaigns led by Sean Russel. Furthermore, One cannot expect to be victorius in limited warfare in Northern Ireland where the Protestants make up two-thirds of the population. An excellent military analysis of the IRA. Recommended to all readers.

5 out of 5 stars Unbiased examination of IRA strategy.......1998-06-01

An interesting, dispassionate analysis of IRA strategy from 1969 onwards. Smith is not concerned with moralizing, and takes no position on the justness of the IRA's campaign. Rather, he looks at the methods and strategy of the IRA and how well they have (or haven't) advanced the IRA's interests. He doesn't seem to consider the IRA's goal of a united and free Ireland as realistic, and continually evaluates the IRA's position in the most pragmatic terms possible. This can be somewhat off-putting for someone wrapped up in the principles of Irish Republicanism, but it is thought provoking and these are probably the kind of arguments that were used to bring the IRA's campaign to an end by pragmatists within it and within its political allies in Sinn Fein. For this reason it is a valuable book for Irish Republican supporters to read.

For people not very familiar with the struggle in the north of Ireland, this book is probably not the best place to start. I would suggest reading a broader and more general history first, such as "The IRA" by Tim Pat Coogan, which is excellent for those with no previous knowledge of the subject (and even for those of us who do have some). Then come back to this book.

2 out of 5 stars Memoir of a little known event should have been so much more.......2003-12-09

Tales of World War I are often the most overlooked in military history. Everyone knows the war happened; many know the parties involved; few even know the causes of that war. Yet, it typically serves as a footnote to its much bloodier, more devastating, and clearer cut offspring of two decades later. Those who know some of World War I do know that November 11th, 1918 served as the day of the armistice between the Allied and Central Powers, ostensibly declaring the end of the physical portion of the war and the beginning of the treaty negotiations. What few people know is that fighting involving the Allies continued almost a full year after Armistice Day, but it didn't involve any of the defeated Central powers. With Russia having had to withdraw from the Great War in 1917 because of the Bolshevik rebellion, many western nations looked to that country with fear of the new `red menace' that was being propagated by the Bolsheviks and Communists. As a result, during the dying days of World War I, the Allies sent what amounted to a police force to such northern Russian provinces as Siberia to contain the Bolshevik threat. Some skirmishes were fought, men died, but in the end, nothing much changed. The Bolsheviks still controlled all of Russia and sat as an impending threat to the west and the Allies who were involved in this action were disillusioned by the weather and the need to continue fighting well after their compatriots on the Western Front had returned home.

Very little has been written about this specific military action. However, one of the privates in the U.S. Army who served in Bolshevik campaign did keep an extensive memoir from beginning of basic training until being relieved from duty at the end of this action. "Fighting the Bolsheviks" is Private Donald E. Carey's remembrance of that difficult time. One of Carey's sons edited his father's journal and filled in the missing elements that would enable the reader to better understand what was happening there. Unfortunately, "Fighting the Bolsheviks" isn't a very good book. It's possible that this is because Donald Carey only intended his journal to be a personal or family record, but there's no getting around the boring, dry nature of the narrative and the events that take place. Carey does convey the monotony and misery of the environment he served in, as well as the tremendous displeasure he and his fellow American soldiers felt at being enduring the patronizing attitudes of their British superiors. The problem stems from Carey's preoccupation with needing to make constant reference to and commentary on things like the camp VD inspections, immoral actions (read: sex) by fellow soldiers, and his strong dislike for his British superiors. While the dislike of the British faction can be understood, Carey's obsession with the carnal behaviors of his fellow soldiers seems self-righteous and distracting. The first time it's mentioned and Carey expresses his revulsion for those behaviors because of his devout faith, we get it. We don't need to keep `getting it' throughout the rest of the book. It almost seems as though the battles fought are merely glossed over so that Carey can launch into another moral commentary about his colleagues. This is tremendously disappointing and renders what should an insightful look into a largely unknown event into a ponderous and tasking read. "Fighting the Bolsheviks" could have been so much more. It's too bad that it's not.

5 out of 5 stars Where the streets are mud.......2003-08-08

PFC Donald Carey was drafted into the U.S. Army in the waning days of WW I. Instead of the fields of France, He and the 339th Infantry Regiment were sent to the icy plains of Northern Russia, to fight Lenin's Bolsheviks, in a place as unfamiliar to a Michigan schoolteacher as hardtack is to troopers today.
This excellent account of America's forgotten true "Cold War" with the Soviets is bound to captivate and surprise, as this conflict is generally forgotten or relegated to a few lines in foreign policy texts. (See George F. Kennan's excellent "Soviet-American Relations, 1917-1920, Volume II: The Decision To Intervene" for a fascinating diplomatic and military discussion of the American North Russian Expeditionary Force).
Carey's journal is lucid and revealing of a small town man placed into a larger and unfamiliar world that he deals with extremely well. The parochialisms of 1900's America do show, as he refers to some of his fellow soldiers as "wops", but he never denigrates them further, and learns from them. His penchant for temperance leads him to remark on the passage of Prohibition as good for America, as he also is celibate while overseas, unlike many of his fellow soldiers, who succumb to various venereal diseases.
All in all, a very good book on an obscure but still important chapter of American history.

4 out of 5 stars A Private's View.......2002-05-11

If you're looking for an explanation of what the US and its' allies were doing fighting in Russia in 1918-1919, this isn't it. If you're looking for a book that relates what war is like for the men who actually fight and die in the front lines, this is a good start.
Carey was drafted and went with the 339th Infantry to Russia as a part of the Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War. The common soldiers knew nothing of what they were doing there - most of the officers had no clue, either. His unit wound up under British command, and was put in the front lines with no clear mission or purpose.
This is a book about the day-to-day grind of Army life in WW1; the marching, the drills, the dirt, horrible food, and hard work.
This is a look at war from a private's viewpoint.

5 out of 5 stars An Educated Man Serves in A Strange Situation.......2002-01-04

I am always on the lookout for "grunt" history that covers little known theatres and periods.
His unit was sent to North Russia to protect the vast stocks of war materials left behind on the docks when the Kerensky government lost power. They had already ceased active operations against the Germans but it was the Bolsheviks who signed the peace treaty in 1918. Since the Allies did not want the Germans to capture this booty materiel an expedition was sent made up of British, French, and US army and naval forces.
In the course of guarding the lines of communications, the allies brushed against the Reds who took to raiding them. The resulting hostilities poisoned US-USSR relations for many years and it was not until the 1930s that ambassadors were exchanged. On the other side, the Allies and Japanese forced landed and took over Vladivostok and advanced west intending to garrison the Trans Siberian Railway, and relieve the Czech Legion which had been formed from POWs from the Austro Hungarian Empire, since they could not march westward through the German Army to get home to Czechoslovakia. Remember, that before 1918, neither Poland nor CZ nor Yugoslavia existed as modern governments. All were carved out of the remnants of the German, Russian, and Austro-Hungarian empires.
This Siberian expedition which ended up aiding the White Russians also served to alienate the Red government which won the Russian Civil War. Later on US troops who fought against the Bolsheviks formed a society of remembrance, a veteran's club, if you will, and held annual meetings, were thought suspect simply because they had touched Reds, and the federal authorities kept track of their activities for years after.

5 out of 5 stars A superb addition to the literature.......1999-07-12

Fighting the Bolsheviks: The Russian War memoir of Private First Class Donald E. Carey, 1918-1919. Edited by Neil G. Carey. Presidio Press, Novato: Ca. 1997

This is truly one of the most important memoirs to come out of the so-called, Great War. To make it even more important, it didn't appear until nearly eighty years after the events. It, like the Elton Mackin memoir, is an extremely valuable addition to what we know about the ordeals suffered by the American soldiers so many years ago. In addition to some excellent personal photos, two superb maps and a chronology of events add to the value of this book, one of the few, about the famed "Polar Bears," the fighting 339th Infantry from Michigan.

Carey was a school teacher at the rather advanced age of twenty-five when Uncle Sam beckoned. Like most of his contemporaries, he was no hero, but he knew his duty and went-but not to France, where most of the action was, and where most American soldiers wound-up. No, his crowd was shipped off to North Russia. We had no declaration of war versus Russia so technically sending Americans to attempt to put down a revolution in a foreign country was fait accompli but not legal. Congress didn't like our intervention, and neither did the American soldiers sent there. Most to remain long after the war in the rest of Europe, the real war, was terminated. The lads didn't like it. But, they did their duty and were the first Americans to fight the Reds.

If you are a WWI buff, and so many people are now becoming that-as they realize what a confused, convoluted, and downright fascinating period that was-you will throughly enjoy this very personal memoir. It is great. Five stars at least. More if they are allowed.

Book Description

In the year 1495, Charles VIII was the youthful King of France, the most powerful state in medieval Europe. A dreamer who saw himself as the saviour of Christian Europe, he believed he could roll back the ever-spreading tide of Ottoman Turkish conquest. As a base for his crusade he was determined to seize southern Italy. In a lightning campaign he used France's modern army to sweep through Italy, his mobile field artillery train smashing into dust the tall towers of Italy's medieval castles. The Italian states rallied and at Fornovo their alliance, the League of Venice, fought Charles' army to a standstill.

3 out of 5 stars With Osprey, Its Hit or Miss.......2006-09-10

Having beaten the English in the Hundred Years War, France emerged as Europe's most powerful nation. It was a position France was to hold until 1870. In 1495, Charles VIII decided to advance his claim on the Throne of Naples by marching his modern army down the boot of Italy. Having seized Naples, the Italian states rallied to form the League of Venice and block Charles' return to France. A race began to stop Charles before he returned to France and the battle of Fornovo is the bloody climax of that retreat.

Five hundred years have passed since the Battle of Fornovo and it is inherently difficult to explain the ecomomic and military issues of that era. Unfortunately, David Nicolle is not up to this difficult task. He gets too wrapped up in the minor details and does not have the gift to make the complicated simple.

The other weakness of the book is the graphics. This book was originally published in 1996 and in the ten years that have passed, a revolution has taken place in book publishing. This book looks very tired with its washed out, black and white photos and mediocre illustrations by Richard Hook.

The Fornovo campaign is compelling and with all its weaknesses, this book will deliver for the person truly interested in the period. For someone with a more casual interest in the era, I would recommend Osprey's much better book on the battle of Pavia, 1525.

4 out of 5 stars Informative For Wargaming and History.......2000-03-30

This Osprey Campaign Series book about the Battle of Fornovo is very informative. Provides alot of data on French and Italian military thinking of the time and the politics and military aims of the campaigns that lead to Fornovo. The account of the battle itself is also very detailed. My one criticism is that the clor plates don't give a good "feel" of the clothing and uniforms of the time. The book itself neglects this as well. There are some plates and breif description, but not much more. Overall very useful.

5 out of 5 stars An Irish Cleric Fighting for Dixie.......2000-10-29

The Confederacy's Fighting Chaplain, Father John B. Bannon by Phillip Thomas Tucker, is an excellent biography and Civil War History. The book gives the background of Father Bannon, beginning with his education in Ireland and his service in St. Louis. The conflicts which were tearing St. Louis, as well as the nation, apart are well reflected in the life of Bannon as he was making his decision as to how to respond to the gathering storm. Not limiting his narrative to a mere recitation of facts, Tucker acquaints the reader with the factors working on, and the thoughts going on within Bannon's mind which led him to his conclusion that the Confederacy represented the cause of freedom and Christian civilization in America. The chapters covering Bannon's service as chaplain for the First Missouri Confederate Brigade skillfully blend the details of the chaplain's life with the greater history of the War in general. The final section of the book relates Bannon's unique service as a diplomatic agent on behalf of the Confederacy and his role as personal emissary from President Davis to Pope Pius IX. Davis had asked Bannon to undertake a mission to Ireland to attempt to dissuade Irish from enlisting in the Union Army. It was Bannon's initiative to undertake the overture which almost resulted in recognition of the Confederacy by the Vatican. The unique intertwining of Bannon's roles as chaplain and diplomat within the larger story in which he played a part, make this a very worthwhile addition to the Civil War literature

    4 out of 5 stars Unsolved problem.......2004-07-18

Perhaps to people like me who have never been to Dublin, it is hard to imagine that city afflicted by a heroin problem. But indeed that is so, as graphically described by Murphy-Lawless. She explains how Dublin has working class inner city districts burdened with high unemployment. Into this came a ready supply of heroin. The resultant plague of addicts was not unlike what occurred in suburbs like Parramatta in Sydney, for example. She shows how women in those Dublin districts coped. The women might have been addicts themselves. Or an immediate family member might be. Difficult times. Not in the least because the methadone cure is not always successful, and can be very addictive in its own right.

The author shows cases of positive outcomes. But not in every instance. Fatal overdoses are a recurrent phenomenon. No end in sight to this Dublin problem.
