The book was published last year (2006), but it is very out of date. There is nothing in there that dates past "The Short Victorious War".
Honor Universe.......2007-05-20
Wonderful illustrations and descriptions of the ships and situations in Honor's universe. A perfect companion to the fiction and with the new games coming out an excellent tool to learn what it's all about.
The Honorverse reference!.......2007-01-26
The first of a serie of books that promise to be full of interesting data for all the fans of David Weber and his Honorverse. This book begins the description of the Royal Manticoran Navy and its ships, weapons, ranks, uniforms... A fantastic product.
I'm now waiting eagerly for the second book in the serie depicting the People's Navy which should be released really soon: "Jayne's Intelligence Review: The People's Republic Navy".
And for french fans...
Excellent Book!.......2007-01-05
This is a must have for all those fans of David Weber's Honerverse.
The first in a series of books covering the political entities in the honorverse. It gives background info into the Manty navy and marines. The layout of the book is excellent. Every right handed page is in colour, which is treat to behold and adds character to the book.
A very excellent book and I can't wait for the rest in the series.
Excellent Reference Book.......2006-12-22
The Jayne's Intelligence Review series from Ad Astra Games promises to be one of the most exciting products to come down the pike from a company already well-known for its realistic and exactingly researched game materials. The first volume, The Royal Manticoran Navy, is a resource guide for the delight of any Honorverse fan. With David Weber's stamp of approval, this slim volume tells you all about the Star Kingdom of Manticore from the Honor Harrington series of novels and short story collections. Between its covers you will find complete data on all of the starships of the RMN as well as uniforms, ranks, organization, weapons, skinsuits, powered battle armor, tactics, and astrography.
This series is intended to give useable background information for wargamers and roleplayers alike, but it is also an excellent resource guide for anyone who has read of the adventures of Honor Harrington in David Weber's series of Napoleonic space opera.
I definitely award this book five stars and I am certainly looking forward to the companion volume on the Peoples Navy of Haven (which should be out in a couple of months).

I said this to Jaime himself "You deliver the goods far better then anyone else".......2007-10-13
and I stand by that. I have studied many programs regarding vocals and if I had only gotten this book a long time ago it could have saved a lot of money. I was thorougly impressed with Jaime's knowledge as well as his dedication to his students. This book contains everything you need to know to become the singer of your dreams. I have actually spoken to Jaime and what I found was a guy who was loaded with knowledge that was as anxious to teach as I am to learn the secrets of the voice. I think the fact that I talked to the man himself instead of an associate speaks volumes. Another great thing is that when you buy the book you get access to the members only area of his website which includes a message board of other singers so you can share your experiences as well as setbacks so it remains a constant source of knowledge. If I could recomend 2 products it would be this book and "Vocal Power" by Jim Gillette. The 2 work hand in hand and give the most bang for the buck. You wont need expensive voice lessons to become a great singer. Just the knowledge here and a bit of dedication. If I was able to hack this site and give him a 10 star review I would thats how impressed I am. I honestly can't "sing" enough praise about it...but then again I am only 2 weeks into the course :)
Apprehensive, but now a believer........2007-08-28
So, I'm going to preface this with a little information on me. I'm 19, and I have had about 4 singing lessons, which I did after buying the book. I'm considered a bass/baritone. Before buying the book the lowest note I could sing was about an A2, and the highest was an F4 above middle C.
Well, I read the whole book and sort of understood what was going on. It was really hard not having someone there to help me, but I tried applying the things in the book. My range expanded, going down to a Gb2, and up to an A4, but that was really pushing it to the limit. I then took several lessons, and he helped me to better understand how to apply what Jaime was teaching. My range went higher from there, but after I dropped the lessons due to not having time to take them, I totally forgot what I learned and was back to where I was before.
All the sudden, I had some sort of drastic change happen. I was driving home late at night, and tried doing a vocal slide; started on my lowest note and slid up as high as I could.
I have NO CLUE why all the sudden it happened, but it did. I went past my break point, and up into the Robert Plant zone, which was really crazy and something I never thought could happen. I thought it was a fluke ,and tried it again the next day. I could still do it, and this time I measured it. I slid all the way up to a C6. Almost 2 octaves higher than where I usually flipped into falsetto. I seriously can't believe it.... I can't automatically start on a high note and sing Communication Breakdown in a single try, but just the fact that I am hitting these notes means it IS possible.
Sing a whole lot, read the book, and just have fun. It took me awhile to get to where I am ( and even then I still don't know how it happened), but I'm almost starting to take this for granted. I pretty much don't remember what it was like to have a break point and not get past it, but MAN am I glad it's gone!
This book is a complete must. Check his forums after you buy it. I also think there is a new revision coming out.

but how would i know, they say it's in stock???.......2007-04-23
I know this book is good, however, amazon claims it's in stock, i'm sending this book as a Birthday gift, and they tell me it will take 1 and 1/2 MONTHS to deliver this.
Customer service just tries to make you feel good about your purchase, but when it comes down to it, they don't give a .........form letter is all you will get.
Amazon, WAKE UP.
Learn how to sing right!!!.......2007-01-19
This book was great! Before I got this book, I was just singing. Now I can truly say that I am singing right.
Jaime does a really good job explaining how it feels when you are singing correctly. He also has exercises you can perform that help you get that right. His exercises were also more effective than others I'd tried. He also realizes the importance of visualization so there are numerous visualization techniques that he talks you through.
This book is packed with useful and highly effective exercises that you can use to increase your power and range. It's also a very easy read. I had more breakthroughs in my singing while reading his book than at any other time. I am still making progress because of what I learned in "Raise Your Voice" and I would recommend it to anyone.
Thank you for not pimping aspiring singers.......2006-12-25
He deserves credit for not overcharging aspiring singers to obtain this extremely helpful information that, among other things, will help you eliminate breaks, improve the fullness of your voice over an extended range, and most important to me, eliminate dry vocal cords. Other teachers intentionally spread this info over numerous cds for an exorbitant fee or through some other contrivance (e.g. Breathing, Tone, Upper Range; or Level I, II, III). (Although he did bifurcate this material from the breathing workout - I don't own the latter so cannot say whether my compliment should be tempered). In any event excellent job on this solid work!

Best True Crime Book Ever!.......2007-09-09
Until I read this book, I thought Anne Rule's the Stranger Beside Me was the best read to date. I could not put this book down and a week later I cannot stop thinking about these 2. I couldn't help but feel somewhat sorry for Karla after all that Paul did to her. I can see how a young girl could be mentally "screwed" up and brainwashed after encountering and having their first relationship w/a man like Paul. I too have been a victim of abuse and can somewhat understand what this mentionally and emmotionally does to a person although I left long before it could get worse (I was a few years older than Karla before I got involved w/an abusive man so maybe I just knew better.) I do believe that Karla got off too easy but I don't feel that she should've spent the rest of her life in prison. 25 years would of been sufficient for her but I also believe that Paul Bernardo is probably the sickest most evil man I have ever read about and am very glad he is spending the rest of his life confined in a very small space. I think for the kind of person he is this is the perfect punishment, way worse than the death penalty which Canada does not have. Although maybe he should be left alone in general population as Dahmer did. It's sick to say but I'd love to see some of the torture retuned upon him. You cannot help but HATE this man. A very well written book and must have for any true crime fanatic such as myself.
Will stay with you.......2007-08-31
This sordid tale stayed with me for a long time. It even prompted me to rent movies mentioned in the book that Paul Bernardo tried to emulate. The story is well written and very detailed and caused me to tell everyone I know about it as I read it. We still joke about "Snuffles". Read this and you will be in the know!
Truthfully.......2007-06-22
Ok i have read this book a total of 6 times, from front to back. I absolutely believe that Karla was really a "battered wife" and she assisted in the heinous crimes, but only against her will. Yes she may have had a smile on her face on the videoptapes, but one thing will remain the same, she didnt do those things because she enjoyed doing those things, she did that stuff because HE made her. I can completely relate to being scared of my spouse, and under his control i would do anything he wanted. As many people who say that she is as evil as Paul, or that she got off way too easy, just dont understand the control a man can have over a woman. Before Paul, Karla was a confident, self contained person, and she would have never done anything as heinous as these crimes without a man like Paul to make her. But this book is the best one out so far, And i highly recommend this book.
A MUST READ.......2007-02-17
As a lover of true crime and owner of 400+ books of that genre, I must say that this one rates #1. I read it over and over and still can not get enough of this case. Karla is an enigma and I must say that I have a strange fascination with her, I am constantly looking for new information about her and her life. Not that I doubt one bit that she was every bit as sick as Paul, but there is something about her that makes you second guess yourself about her true inner workings. I think all the books written about this couple are equally good, but this is the first one I read, and it remains my favorite.
Oh, poor Karla.......2006-04-17
This book tries VERY hard to convince the reader about poor Karla. It takes every opportunity to point out how terrible it must have been for KARLA!
It fails to mention that there were several experts that were willing to testify that Karla's 'battered wife syndrome' was bull. They stated that she was more than willing; but because she plead guilty, they were not required.
This book tried to throw in facts of how cold & unfeeling she was about the entire thing, but I felt throughout the entire book, this writer wanted me to feel sorry for Karla.
This book did however show the UGLY side of not only of the judical system but of humanity.
Karla is Satan's bride and at his side she will be for all eternity.

Doesn't Make the Grade; Not a Bang - Just a Whimper.......2005-12-06
When Mr. Burnside first got this book published back in 1999, it was probably the best book on the subject, and helpful to consumers. The truth is, though, it is embarrassing by almost any standard today. The editing is non-existent, and that just shows the lack of thought that went into this. It was thrown together, and omits more than it conveys. There are far better choices now; most notably Wes Johnson's "The Manufactured Home Buyer's Handbook" that just came out. The latter is an outstanding book, well-researched, far more thorough, and much easier to read. It will also save you more money than any other book on the subject that I've read. If you're thinking about buying a manufactured home, do yourself a favor and buy "The Manufactured Home Buyer's Handbook" instead. You'll be glad you did before the ink on the contract dries!
Embarrassingly Awful!.......2005-10-04
After years of renting, my fiancé and I are thinking about relocating to another part of the country and purchasing our own home. Since location is of the utmost importance to us - we'd rather have a large plot of land and a modest house than a mansion set on a tiny lot - we came up with the idea of purchasing raw land and putting a small but nice manufactured home on it while we slowly save up to build a larger home. Eventually, the manufactured home will become a guest house or even home office. At least that's one option!
In the course of investigating this possibility, I visited my local library and checked out every book I could find on manufactured, prefabricated, and modular homes. "Buying a Manufactured Home" was the only guide I could find that is specific to manufactured homes.
Unfortunately, the book is embarrassingly awful, plain and simple. Author Kevin Burnside, a salesman for a manufactured home dealer, clearly lacks both writing experience and ability. Additionally, it doesn't appear as though his manuscript was edited - or even proofread - before it went to print. The text is rife with errors: many of the sentences are poorly structured, words are misspelled or misused, and punctuation is spotty. The reader literally can't pass through a page or two without spying some sort of mistake.
Two common errors include using "your" and "you're" interchangeably, and omitting one set of quotation marks in a pair, so that the reader's left to guess where a direct quotation begins and/or ends. I wouldn't even expect my younger brother - a senior in high school - to make such basic mistakes.
However, it isn't just the presentation of the book that's flawed; the content is lacking as well. "Buying a Manufactured Home" is organized into 16 chapters: Introduction; Looking at Manufactured Homes; Home Hunting; Financing: Shop for Money First; Finding a Good Dealer; Shopping for a Home; Finding a Home for Your Home; Finding the Best House; The Energy-Efficient Home; Be Your Own Contractor; Materials and Construction; Worksheets and Option Lists; Flow Sheets; Warranties; Contracts; and Arm Yourself.
Overall, I thought that Burnside did an adequate job of discussing financing and contract negotiation. Nonetheless, these issues are not specific to manufactured homes; rather, buyers must be concerned with financing and negotiations in any home purchase. Since I picked up this book to learn about the unique aspects of buying manufactured homes, I thought it was largely a waste of time to discuss more general issues, particularly since the book was so brief. Given the short length of the book, I really feel as though the author should have concentrated on the issues specific to manufactured homes, issues of which the average homebuyer would not be aware.
For instance, the sections on "Finding the Best House" and "Materials and Construction" were frustratingly vague and truncated. Burnside commonly lists different options that are available without explaining the pros and cons of each. Additionally, he occasionally advises which option is preferable but doesn't explain why.
An excellent example of this is his "Quick Materials Checklist" on pages 146-148. The checklist is essentially a line-by-line list of questions to ask of any home you're looking at. In theory, this is a helpful tool to carry with you while shopping. In reality, it's almost useless, as Burnside does not describe the various answers and explain which are more desirable and why.
For example, here is a short excerpt from his checklist, quoted word for word:
"Are shingles 20, 25, or 30 year warranty?"
"Are they held down with nails or staples?"
"How many nails per shingle?"
"Is felt used on the roof decking?"
"What size are the trusses?"
"How is the attic cavity vented?"
The only thing these questions tell me is that I should be concerned with the issues they raise. However, even if the manufacturer were to address each of these in-depth, his or her answers wouldn't help much since I don't know what the "right" answers are! I know to ask about the size of the trusses, but I have no idea what size the trusses SHOULD be!
The bottom line is that "Buying a Manufactured Home" is poorly organized, poorly researched, poorly written, and poorly edited. It's awful. I'd be embarrassed to have such a train wreck distributed with my real name stamped on the cover for all to see. Do yourself a favor and pass this one up - I sure wish I had! It was a waste of an afternoon, and I still find myself flabbergasted that Burnside was able to find someone to publish such a gawd-awful manuscript.

I hate thinking up titles.......2004-06-10
Very good, eye-opener book if you are considering buying a manufactured home. Lots of behind the scenes information on how dealers operate when they sell you a home. Many good checklists to go over and plenty of tips on how to save a lot of money and headaches when purchasing. I read the book in three hours and wished there was more on what it's like to live in one of these homes. It would have been nice if he had provided a list of reputable or even just all home manufacturers in general with website links. Glad I bought the book.
Manufactured Home Buying Required Reading.......2004-01-21
This book should be required reading for anyone considering a manufactured home. A few evenings spent with this book will not only save you thousands of dollars it will result in you getting a much better home. Be sure to make notes and take them with you when you visit the dealers and the manufactured home factory (something you really must consider doing before you sign). Buying a manufactured home isn't like buying a car - so don't treat it that way.
A Must Buy!.......2001-07-25
Aloha,If you are in the market for a manufactured home you *must* get this book. He tells all the ins and outs of the manufactured home buying process written from the perspective of a guy who is simply trying to tell you the truth. He is sincere and *very* knowledgeable and will save you significant money and hassle. As one reviewer noted, this is not the best editing job. There are a number of grammatical errors, careless things like a missing pro-noun or mispelled words. But you don't buy a book like this looking for pulitzer prize level literature. You buy it to arm yourself with information. Mr. Burnside does a very good job of doing just that, arming you, and does so in an easy to read/understand fashion. I read the whole thing in about 4 hours. He gives tips on all aspects of buying a manufactured home and setting it up on your property. But the primary focus is how to handle the home dealers and how to get the best deal with the right options. In that light it would be wise to have this book as but one book in your home buying collection. A great book that covers other important areas like finding and buying land (etc) in a more comprehensive way than Mr. Burnside's book is "Finding and Buying Your Place in the Country" by Scher & Scher (husband wife team). This is also a *must* have book. Do not as much as set foot inside a manufactured home dealer without reading this book.Good Luck! It is a best seller for a reason.

Book Description
Ambrose Burnside, the Union general, was a major player on the Civil War stage from the first clash at Bull Run until the final summer of the war. He led a corps or army during most of this time and played important roles in various theaters of the war. But until now, he has been remembered mostly for his distinctive side-whiskers that gave us the term "sideburns" and as an incompetent leader who threw away thousands of lives in the bloody battle of Fredericksburg.
In a biography focusing on the Civil War years, William Marvel reveals a more capable Burnside who managed to acquit himself credibility as a man and a soldier. Along the Carolina coast in 1862, Burnside won victories that catapulted him to fame. In that same year, he commanded a corps at Antietam and the Army of the Potomac at Fredericksburg. In East Tennessee in the summer and fall of 1863, he captured Knoxville, thereby fulfilling one of Lincoln's fondest dreams. Back in Virginia during the spring and summer of 1864, he once again led a corps at the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. But after the fiasco of the Crater he was denied another assignment, and he resigned from the army the day that Lincoln was assassinated.
Marvel challenges the traditional evaluation of Burnside as a nice man who failed badly as a general. Marvel's extensive research indicates that Burnside was often the scapegoat of his superiors and his junior officers and that William B. Franklin deserves a large share of the blame for the Federal defeat at Fredericksburg. He suggests that Burnside's Tennessee campaign of 1863 contained much praiseworthy effort and shows during the Overland campaign from the Wilderness to Petersburg, and at the battle of the Crater, Burnside consistently suffered slights from junior officers who were confident that they could get away with almost any slur against "Old Burn." Although Burnside's performance included an occasional lapse, Marvel argues that he deserved far better treatment than he has received from his peers and subsequently from historians.
Customer Reviews:
A little long.......2007-06-15
Marvel's account is pretty much all you have to turn to if you want to read about the infamous Burnside. The author tries his hardest to present Burnside in a favorable light, going so far as to claim he could have won at Fredericksburg if not for the slowness of General Franklin. Marvel's contentions about Burnside's competency are at best debatable. As noted elsewhere, there is very little here about Burnside's early life (perhaps due to lack of source material), and less understandably, little is included about his post-war political career.
I feel the book was a bit long, going into great detail about situations where Burnside's subordinates were preforming some maneuver in New Berne or East Tennessee. The book could have been edited down by a hundred pages or so.
There also a lack of the voice of the subject. Very few letters seem to exist from Burnside, so it is hard to get to know him outside the limits of his official communications.
A Suprisingly Complex Burnside .......2006-07-01
Ambrose Burnside remains famous for his staggering incompetence as a Civil War general and his facial hair. In this solid biography, William Marvel presents a more intriguing character than most Civil War buffs would think.
Marvel takes the reader through the various triumphs and defeats of Burnside's career. While not ignoring the disasters at Fredrciskburg and the Crater, Marvel does show that Burnside had some ability as his operations in North Carolina and, to a lesser extent, east Tennessee show. Marvel also does an excellent job in illuminating a number of the minor assignments that Burnside handled well, including his command in Ohio as well as his efforts at recruiting. Burnside's humanity comes through very clearly. Marvel does an excellent job of showing
how the Civil War transformed Burnside's thoughts on race. The prewar Jacksonian Democrat became a Republican as the nature of the war changed. Unlike his friend George McClellan, Burnside seemed to understand that the war had become about more than preserving the Union and started drifting along the same tide as others. The conservative who at the start of the war seemed willing to preserve slavery recognized that the institution of human bondage had to be ended with the Confederacy. Burnside, more than most Union generals, also appreciated the use of African-American soldiers. Marvel shows Burnside in a much more complex light than the caricature of an affable incompetent. Marvel also shows that Burnside had his own circle of subordinates and friends who remained loyal to their chief.
But the book has its flaws. While excellent on the war years, Marvel has little to say on Burnside's pre-war career inlcuding his friendship with George McClellan, his 1858 campaign for Congress and his failed attempt to produce rifles for the Army. Even more astonishing, Marvel has almost nothing to say about Burnside's important post-war political career. Burnside served three terms as governor of Rhode Island and was an important senator for seven years. Some of the more interesting stories which help humanize Burnside are burried in the endnotes (such as a funny tale of Burnside playfully whacking an aide over the head with a slipper).
Still, the book remains an excellent one and is of interest to any Civil War scholar. The book is also very readable. While a bit savage to McClellan, the author seems as affable as the subject; high praise indeed since Burnside's charitable nature comes through on almost every page.
Honest Picture od Naive Burnsides: Great Ideas and Failures.......2001-02-20
This is a true honest work of a General who had some excellent ideas but was often too naive with initiating action or from truly evaluating his staff. He was politically inept in being aware of the political cabal of McClellanites that undermined his command of the Army of the Potomac and contributed to his failings at Fredericksburg. Marvel does an excellent job demonstrating Burnsides successes at Roanoke Island with amphibious landings, perhaps the first in American war, and his occupation of coastal N.C. Marvel explains that Burnsides beat Lee to Fredericksburg but was held back by Halleck's failure to organize the pontoon train needed to cross the Rappahannock. The author's most interesting part of the book is his explanation of Burnsides' battle plan at Fredericksburg and his misunderstanding of the terrain features of Marye's Heights. In addition, one of the cabal generals commanding the left wing failed to execute his flanking movement properly yet communicated success causing Burnsides to unleash full scale attacks on Marye's Heights. Another fascinating piece centers on Burnsides' plan of the "crater", blowing up a confederate section of line and exploiting the breach with specially trained African American units. Unfortunately, the plan was severely hindered by Grant's and Meade's last minute disallowance of the black units to execute the plan resulting in untrained units commanded by an intoxicated officer. In between Burnsides does well keeping Longstreet out of Tennessee but inflames Sherman by providing Sherman a feast upon his arrival. Sherman misunderstood the meal as evidence that Burnsides' needed no relief. Burnsides is depicted as a very intelligent man that invented a breech loaded rifle but was politically naive particularly that even his alleged friend, McClellan undermined him for his own purpose without Burnsides being aware of it. Hard to defend Burnsides' limited action on McClellan's left flank at Antietam where any early action could have resulted in defeat of Lee. Regardless that McClellan didn't not ask Burnsides to attack earlier but any initiative by Burnsides would have made for a different outcome. Also, if Burnsides was aware or more personally involved with the crater attack, he should have recognized that the officer in charge of the attack was unfit and when the attack was misdirected, perhaps organized a better follow-up of troops although Meade aborted support. One of the last McCellan's generals of the Army of the Potomac to resign, only Warren lasted longer until his encounter withh Sheridan. The book leaves one thinking that if Burnsides had just a little of Sheridan in him and a little less of Burnsides, he would have been more successful. From a biography standpoint, Burnsides seems to havea lot in common with Confederate Genenral Ewell whose failures were also more pronounced than his victories.
Well Researched & Presented Military Biography.......1999-01-15
Ambrose Burnside may not be many people's favourite Civil War Commander but in this 1991 biography, the author, William Marvel, presents Burnside in a light previously not seen before. The Federal general comes across as a man who cared deeply for his men and was honest in his dealings with other commanders and his subordinates. The author presents his case that Burnside's reputation was tarnished by other Federal commanders who wished to pass on the blame of their failures to this man who would not publicly air his dissent. Examples given are General McClellan at Antietam, General William Franklin at Fredericksburg and Meade at the Wilderness and Petersburg. The author presents his case well and you start to feel that maybe Burnside was given the short end of the stick in a lot of cases. Burnside appears to be a patriotic soldier who was prepared to give everything to the cause regardless of the cost to himself and his reputation. Marvel offers references & notes to support his theory and although he tends to offer Burnside the benefit of the doubt most of the time I still came away feeling that Burnside probarly did not deserve all the negative media he has received in history. Overall this is a well researched and presented biography and although you may not agree with the author it's still a very well told story and a treat to read.

Book Description
'It is well this is so terrible! We should grow too fond of it,' said General Robert E. Lee as he watched his troops repulse the Union attack at Fredericksburg on 13 December 1863.
This collection of seven original essays by leading Civil War historians reinterprets the bloody Fredericksburg campaign and places it within a broader social and political context. By analyzing the battle's antecedents as well as its aftermath, the contributors challenge some long-held assumptions about the engagement and clarify our picture of the war as a whole.
The book begins with revisionist assessments of the leadership of Ambrose Burnside and Robert E. Lee and a portrait of the conduct and attitudes of one group of northern troops who participated in the failed assaults at Marye's Heights. Subsequent essays examine how both armies reacted to the battle and how the northern and southern homefronts responded to news of the carnage at Frederickburg. A final chapter explores the impact of the battle on the residents of the Fredericksburg area and assesses changing Union attitudes about the treatment of Confederate civilians.
The contributors are William Marvel, Alan T. Nolan, Carol Reardon, Gary W. Gallagher, A. Wilson Greene, George C. Rable, and William A. Blair.

A great collection of essays by those historians most familiar with the Battle of Fredericksburg. Burnsides excellent biographer, Wiliam Marvel, writes a very balanced essay on Burnside and his high command that was still full of McClellan political generals and some that were inept. Burnside shares blame for failed opportunities but was primarily let down by Franklin who proved to be incapable or neglectful in providing a strong attack on the Confederate right that was necessary to attack the heights of the town on the confederate left. The objective critic of Lee, Alan Nolan, writes an essay substantiating why this battle was Lee's greatest and how Longstreet was so capable that his great critic Douglas Freeman had to praise him. A. William Greene who spent many years with the park service at Fredericksburg (he's now at the new Pamplin Civil War Museum in Petersburg) writes of Burnside's last and lost attempt at continuing the campaign, the mud march. Difficult in bad weather but made worse by the political generals who contributed willingly to his failure. The other essays contribute to the realities of war, the carnage and the effect on Civilians and how the virtually destroyed Pennyslvania Division were later to shout "Remember Fredericksburg" at Gettysburg.

Your review of Gallagher's book on the Battle of Fredericksburg has the date wrong. It was fought on Dec. 13, 1862, not 1863.

Intriguing mix of people and machinery from a unique era ........1999-02-20
Having lived and participated in the sports car racing era of the 50's and 60's I can only say that this book portrays it as it was. There was a charmingly naive blend of people and machinery in an era when a handshake was a bond. These photos and the text are very accurate, and why not? Denise McLuggage was there racing, Tom Burnside was there photographing. I was a licensed flagman for the SCCA and stood next to Tom Burnside at many a track in the Northeast . His love and passion for the sport then translates beautifully in his work despite the passage of many years. I recommend this work to anyone who was there or wished they had been - it is worth it. The photos are a treasure for all car enthusiasts. As you page through you can almost smell the the Castrol Racing Oil, hear the beat of the engines small and large and sense your adrenalin rising
A Time Machine for Automobile Racing Fans.......1998-04-09
American Racing is a truly nostalgic book. It covers a wide selection of races on road and airport tracks between 1954 and 1968. If you feel a slight tickling down your spine, when you hear words like 'Jaguar D-Type' or 'Ferrari 250 Testarossa', 'Porsche 550 Spyder' or 'Cobra' then this book is for you. Here they are all together with Allards, Austin Healeys, early Chevy Corvettes, Mercedes 300 SLs, OSCAs, up to the Shelby Cobras, Lolas and Chaparrals. If you get sort of jumpy feelings when you hear 'Nassau Speed week', 'Grand Prix of Cuba' (YES! 1957, 58 and 1960) or 'Sebring 12 Hours' by all means get this book! American Racing is a picture book for all who cherish memories of racing cars which still looked like automobiles and not like motorized advertisement posts. The photographs of Tom Burnside are all in B/W. This is the sole reason why I gave only a rating of 9. I had preferred at least a short section with selected color photographs. But - come to think of it - maybe this book had lost its special appeal... Ok - let's make a 10 out of the 9, then! Back to the pictures: Many of them are simply fantastic, you can almost smell the mix of burned tires and Castrol 'R'. Not only are there hundreds of action photographs out on the track. You also find a lot of snapshots of the dramatic action in the pits during a race, contrasting with pictures of the mechanics preparing the cars in the tranquility of a garage. There are a few shots showing the social side of racing: A friendly chat between drivers between two races, relaxation beside the swimming pool of the hotel, the distinguished atmosphere of the official banquet. In short, you (literally) get the whole picture of the racing scene, when autombile racing was still mainly a sport. Imagine a racing car today with only a few decorative racing stripes and at the most two or three palm size bumper stickers! Here they are, page for page - automobile racing at its best! The texts - incidentally in English, German and French! - are concise and informative. They are written by Denise McCluggage, a journalist with a fine sense for writing exactly not too much and not too less. She gives you all the needed information, and at the same time she transmits the feeling of the atmosphere of the scene. By the way: She was also one of the most gifted lady amateur race drivers who mastered also some of the 'big bangers' of the time! It is simply wonderful to see such a book in print, reliving sweet memories of times when visitors of a race simply could walk into the paddock and talk to the heroes of the day: From Briggs Cunningham to Carroll Shelby, from Bob Bondurant to Jim Hall, from Stirling Moss to John Surtees... Here they are all together, doing their thing and bringing us the thrill of automobile racing at its best.
