I teach English to adult Latinos, and the generic ESL text (i.e., a book not designed for speakers of a specific foreign language) we were using earlier was just awful. My students really love using this book, and I can absolutely notice a marked improvement in their English. One caveat is that if you are an ESL tutor or teacher, you need to have a good knowledge of Spanish in order to make proper use of this text.

i was looking for a book for a spanish speaking friend that will teach the spanish speaker how to correctly pronounce English words. It's very difficult to do in a book because of the many dialect differences in spanish and because there are many English sounds that don't exist in spanish.

the "th" sound as in "the," or "three" (the spanish speaker from SPAIN or Cuba may be the few who may easily learn this because they tend to pronounce some of z's and s's like "th")

the "sh" sound as in "shoe," "radiation," "sugar," etc.

the letter "v" sound as in "vase" (in spanish, the "v" sound doesn't exist because it's identical to the letter "b." there's not a way to phonetically spell the english letter "v" in spanish without explaining that the "v" is "kind of like a smooth f"

The book doesnt teach the many different ways to pronounce each vowel in English (which is very important for a spanish speaker being that each spanish vowel has only one pronounciation). It doesn't emphasize the differences between:
a as in cap
a as in cape
e as in fed (the spanish "e")
e as in athlete (the spanish "i")
ee as in feed
i as in fit
i as in fight
o as in stop (the spanish "a")
o as in stove (the spanish "o")
o as in money
oo as in foot
oo as in spoon (the spanish "u")
u as in put
u as in puke

I would like to see a ESL program for spanish speakers that focuses on pronouncing as I have described.

I use this book with my Mexican boyfriend to better his SPOKEN English, and this book hits the nail right on the head. Although it's written by a "gringo", it is relatively free from grammar and translation mistakes. The style is good for the novice English learner and truly starts from one knowing NOTHING. The flow and progression of the book is more natural than some I have seen. We have finished the book twice and continue to use it for review and drills of vocabulary.

Excellent reference book for the contemporary research and development work. I learned alot by reading this book. I actually followed up on the concept of wavelength up converters and down converters.There is a significant potential in these class of materials for use in medical technology, especially scintilation efficincy improvement. By deposition of converter emulsion in front of a scintilator which emits at UV- or near visible (400NM);short wavelnegth scintilation photons can be translated to two longer wavelength photons where semiconductor detectors have two to three times responsivity. therefore, on could use ordinary si-APD to work with NAI, etc. scintilators. i was also impressed by level of detail dedicated to polymers and their potential applications

besides the excellent recipes wholly printed in the book version, here is my review of the movie, which is not as detailed nor able to be prolonged but is true to the book (unlike other movie versions of books in which some stuff is changed):

after you watch this movie, you will either want to eat, cook (preferably one of the mentioned recipes), make love or all three! i saw the version dubbed in spanish, and also read 3 selected chapters from the book, for spanish class. it's a work of art and genius, and it must be watched all the way through without stopping. the characters are excellently portrayed, and it combines love, feminism, drama, sensuality, lust, hope, passion, and humour, topped with cultural tradition and folklore. i don't know which one is better, the book or the movie. all of the 5 senses are provoked on a deep and perhaps even primal level, especially taste and smell, feverishly yearning for a sum greater than their overall parts (gestalt) - which brings up the sixth sense, intuition.

This is a great book. Once you understand how your darlings manulipate you they are so much easier to deal with. Our children are doing what they are supposed to do, now armed with this knowledge I can understand them better and am a better parent for it.

The Bible tells us to "Train up a child in the way he should go..." but many of us are at a loss as to how we should do it. We know that "Folly is bound up in the heart of a child," but we often wonder if it is so tightly bound, that we'll never see its removal. The Bible is full of wonderful godly parenting wisdom, but sometimes a practical how-to that uses this wisdom would be a God-send. Enter 1-2-3 Magic (and for sanity's sake, let's forget that we are using the word "magic" in conjunction with Biblical parenting--they are being figurative).

1-2-3 Magic for Christian Parents works in three straightforward steps: 1) Controlling obnoxious behavior. 2) Encouraging good behavior. 3) Strengthening your relationship. But how do you do this? By using the count method to control "stop" behaviors (Stop whining!), and strategies for encouraging good, or "start," behavior (Start cleaning up!) you will get your child to a point where you enjoy spending time with them, thus build the relationship.

I would say the power of this book is in controlling the stop behaviors. What do you do about whining? In and of itself, it isn't really a punishable offense. You can tell a child to stop whining until you are blue in the face but they keep at it. Shoot, it works! But with the count method (used correctly), you can put a damper on it pretty quickly. My kids latched right on to the count for those stop behaviors. Also, there is a great abundance of applicable scripture that you may want to copy down and quote to your kids daily (or to yourself!).

As in most parenting books, there are about three chapters that tell you why the system will work before they describe the method, and there are points I disagree with, but overall 1-2-3 Magic seems to work.
